2024 season

Our new ranking of every PGA Tour course—from best to worst

There are plenty of reasons why a course is selected to host a PGA Tour event beyond its architectural merits. Of course, the layout must sufficiently test the best players in the world, but the regional market, logistics and history all play important roles in landing a tour event as well.

That said, it’s no secret the tour travels to many of our country’s finest courses. Of the 32 events played in the United States during the 2024 PGA Tour season, 16 are currently ranked on at least one of Golf Digest's national rankings— America's 100 Greatest , Second 100 Greatest and 100 Greatest Public .

In this guide, we rank the 32 U.S. courses that will host a PGA Tour event or major championship this season, based on the scores from our 1,800 course-ranking panelists. (This list only includes events played in the U.S.—there are five international events scheduled this season. Also note that we only rank the primary course at multi-course events such as Torrey Pines and Pebble Beach.)

You might be surprised how the architectural merits of a layout don’t always align with the prestige of the tour event played there. Our panelists evaluate courses on seven scoring criteria, ranging from Shot Options and Layout Variety to Conditioning and Aesthetics .

Augusta, GA

  • 100 Greatest

There will be no surprise with the No. 1 course on this list. Augusta National has been ranked first, second or third on our biennial America's 100 Greatest Courses ranking in each edition. The club made a significant change in the fall of 2022, lengthening the par-5 13th hole by about 30 yards . No club has tinkered with its golf course as often or as effectively over the decades as has Augusta National Golf Club, mainly to keep it competitive for the annual Masters Tournament, an event it has conducted since 1934, with time off during WWII. All that tinkering has resulted in an amalgamation of design ideas, with a routing by Alister Mackenzie and Bobby Jones, some Perry Maxwell greens, some Trent Jones water hazards, some Jack Nicklaus mounds and swales and, most recently, extensive rebunkering and tree planting by Tom Fazio. The tinkering continued in the summer of 2018 as the club lengthened the par-4 fifth by extending its back tee on newly acquired land. Soon to come, the lengthening of the famed par-5 13th.

Lahaina, hi.

From Golf Digest Architecture Editor emeritus Ron Whitten:  Most golf fans are familiar with Kapalua Golf Club’s Plantation Course, home of the PGA Tour's opening event each year. Located on the north shore of the Hawaiian island of Maui, the Plantation was built from open, windswept pineapple fields on the pronounced slope of a volcano and is irrigated by sprinklers pressured solely by gravity. As the first design collaboration by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, it unveiled their joint admiration for old-style courses. The blind drive on the fourth, the cut-the-corner drives on the fifth and sixth are all based on tee shots found at National Golf Links. So, too, are its punchbowl green and strings of diagonal bunkers. It's also a massive course, built on a huge scale, Coore says, to accommodate the wind and the slope and the fact that it gets mostly resort play.

Arnold Palmer's Bay Hill Club & Lodge: Challenger/Champion

Orlando, fl.

From Golf Digest Architecture Editor emeritus Ron Whitten:  I've always been fascinated by the design of Bay Hill, Arnold Palmer's home course for over 45 years (although Tiger Woods owns it, competitively-speaking, as he's won there eight times.) For one thing, it's rather hilly, a rarity in Florida (although not in the Orlando market) and dotted with sinkhole ponds incorporated in the design in dramatic ways.

I always thought the wrap-around-a-lake par-5 sixth was Dick Wilson's version of Robert Trent Jones's decade-older 13th at The Dunes Club at Myrtle Beach. Each of the two rivals had claimed the other was always stealing his ideas. But the hole I like best at Bay Hill is the par-4 eighth, a lovely dogleg-right with a diagonal green perched above a small circular pond. OK, I admit that it reminds me of the sixth at Hazeltine National, another Trent Jones product, but I don't think Wilson picked Trent's pocket on this one, as both courses were built about the same time, in the early 1960s.

One of five courses at PGA National, the Champion Course has hosted the Honda Classic since 2007. (The event dates back to 1972, though with Honda pulling out as a tournament sponsor, the event is in question going forward.) Originally designed by Tom and George Fazio for tournament play, Jack Nicklaus redesigned the course in 2014, creating the infamous three-hole stretch aptly named "The Bear Trap." Routinely one of the toughest courses on tour, The Champion is a true ball-striking test that plays a lot differently than most courses, where winning scores push over 20 under par.

Planes, drones, and lidar: How EA Sports built the courses of its PGA Tour game

A process that shut down a course 10 years ago is much more accurate, and less invasive, today

Share All sharing options for: Planes, drones, and lidar: How EA Sports built the courses of its PGA Tour game

What most impresses Craig Penner, a gameplay designer on EA Sports PGA Tour , isn’t the game’s butterlike rendering of the middle of the fairway, or the slight harassment of the first cut lining it, or even the anything-goes tangle of the second cut. It’s when things get really hairy. Like, close-to-the-rope or ask-for-relief bad, almost out of bounds.

“The Country Club comes to mind,” Penner said, of the course in Brookline, Massachusetts, scene of the 2022 U.S. Open. “We have certain areas that are kind of mixed rough — heavy rough and dirt together. It’s kind of uneven terrain. And the artists mapped in the terrain to that. It’s all over the place, because you’re going through these different materials, which actually makes it true to real life.

“But then it has this interesting effect of giving you a situation where you don’t really know, until you get up to your ball, if it’s a good lie or a bad lie,” Penner said.

EA Sports PGA Tour , launching March 24 on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X, will include 30 courses at launch , the most ever on the disc in an EA Sports golf video game, with more hinted as live-service updates. All but two of those are real-life courses, and for each of them, EA Tiburon developers flew drones and aircraft, and deployed lidar scanning from the air and on the ground, to map the terrain and get even the most subtle nuances of their greens true to life.

They’ve done this before; for Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 , designers spent 10 days with state-of-the-art scanning equipment to bring Augusta National Golf Course into a video game for the first time — a process that often required the closure of several holes to club members. A decade later, the technology is more accurate, more compact, and a lot less intrusive, producer Ben Ramsour said.

In other words, no real-life tee times were harmed in the making of this video game.

“It’s better now, because we would have to bring these really heavy tripod things, and set them up, and it would take a week to do a course,” Ramsour said. “But the helicopter, besides anyone hearing it, is not invasive, and we can get everything we need in 30 minutes. It’s when we’re doing the photogrammetry, and the panoramic shots, and the color and lighting stuff, that could be seen as invasive.”

 alt=

Even then, “in my pitch to the courses” to get their participation in the game, “it’s always, ‘It’s business as usual.’ Some of these places that are super private, they don’t want to see a guy in an EA Sports shirt with a camera running around,” Ramsour said. The developers show up early, plan around the watering schedules, and try to be invisible. “We’ve had people hit by golf balls,” he laughed.

The 30 courses included at launch in EA Sports PGA Tour on March 24. Wetlands and Lighthouse Pointe are fantasy courses brought back from 2015’s Rory McIlroy PGA Tour .

One of the private courses where members don’t want to be bothered is Los Angeles Country Club, a super-exclusive joint up in Beverly Hills, and the site of the 2023 U.S. Open. Unlike Augusta National, it’s never appeared in a video game before. (No, the Los Santos Golf Club in Grand Theft Auto 5 does not count.)

EA Sports PGA Tour ’s designers committed to bringing all four major championships of men’s golf, on their real-world courses, to their video game back in 2021, which makes the L.A. Country Club’s inclusion almost mandatory. It won’t be in the game on release, but it will arrive as post-launch DLC before the tournament begins in mid-July. The same goes for Oak Hill’s East Course, the scene of May’s PGA Championship.

As a members-only course dating to 1911, Los Angeles Country Club is one of those bucket-list venues that Ramsour would have been calling up even if it wasn’t hosting a major this year, along with Augusta National, St Andrews, and Pebble Beach.

“It’s in the heart of Beverly Hills, so you’ve got the buildings, you can see L.A. in the distance,” Ramsour said of LACC. “It’s incredibly bucket-list exclusive. That one was very hard to get into the game, because they don’t need the publicity of being in a video game. But they understand how we can render their course, and the level of detail that we can create.”

However, it’s not just the drones, the helicopters, and the flyover scanning that builds a course. Penner described multiple meetings with course superintendents to discuss the terrain and how the ball should play, specific to each hole there. The conversations were so detailed that Penner was marking up a yardage book under a nondisclosure agreement, because the course super was giving him information that pro golfers (and analysts, and bookmakers, frankly) would love to have three months in advance.

“I know exactly what the yardage is going to be, on the boards, for the U.S. Open this year,” Ramsour interjected. “And I am not going to share that. If Scottie Scheffler [the 2022 Masters Tournament winner] called me, and asked, like, confidentially? I would still not share that. But having that open dialogue, to make sure we’re representing it exactly, it’s in all of our best interests to be doing that.”

'EA Sports PGA Tour' 2023 release date, price, courses, consoles and more on newest golf video game

Those who indulge will be able to play at major championship venues such as augusta national.

pga tour 2023 course list

EA Sports is officially back in the golf video game space with its impending release of "EA Sports PGA TOUR". Marking its first venture back to the golf scene since "Rory McIlroy PGA Tour" in 2015, the return to consoles will feature stark contrasts compared to those that came before. Having previously featured cover athletes such as McIlroy and primarily Tiger Woods from 1999-2014, this year's edition of the game will not include a big-name superstar on the cover. EA Sports will instead lean on new gameplay options, advanced technology and the inclusion of some of the most storied golf courses around the world.

Below is everything you need to know ahead of the upcoming release of "EA Sports PGA Tour".

Release date

The official release date for "EA Sports PGA TOUR" is Friday, March 24, just two weeks before the 2023 Masters. This makes some sense as the game will feature a Road to the Masters gameplay option.

Price and consoles

The game will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Featuring three different editions, each will come at a different price point. The "Deluxe Edition" is available for pre-order at $84.99 while the "Standard Edition" comes in at $69.99. Lastly, the "EA Play Pro Edition" is listed at $99.99/yr.

The game will include 30 courses in total, and boasts some of the world's most prominent venues such as Augusta National Golf Club, Pebble Beach Golf Links, Southern Hills Country Club, The Old Course at St Andrews Links, The Country Club, Kiawah Island Golf Resort's Ocean Course, Torrey Pines, Evian Resort Golf Club in Évian-les-Bains, France, East Lake Golf Club, TPC Southwind, The Los Angeles Country Club, Wilmington Country Club and more. It will also feature the major host courses from 2021 and 2022 as well as the new 2023 majors courses releasing post-launch.

You can play the game as Scottie Scheffler, Cameron Champ, Xander Schauffele, Sungjae Im, Nelly Korda, Lexi Thompson, Jordan Spieth, Tony Finau and Hideki Matsuyama.

My Career mode

The game will include a role playing game mode-type progression in the Road to the Masters. As one's golf game improves, the likelihood of donning the green jacket or raising a major championship trophy increases. Users will be able to create and customize a golfer and develop their skills through the 20 different shot types available. From there, players will compete in major championships, participate in some of the PGA Tour's best events -- such as The Players Championship -- and ultimately the FedEx Cup. In addition to this, players can take on top amateur championships including the Augusta National Women's Amateur, the U.S. Amateur and other elite international amateur events.

LPGA and the Amundi Evian Championship

In partnership with the LPGA, fans can compete at The Amundi Evian Championship, one of the LPGA Tour's five major championships. They will also have the opportunity to play as several female athletes as well as create a female golfer in the Create-A-Player feature and be able to participate in a series of LPGA-themed challenges and other events.

New technology

  • True-to-Life course visuals:  EA's Frostbite engine uses state-of-the-art equipment such as drone technology, custom LiDAR flight helicopters and more to develop terrain maps allowing to game to depict courses exactly as they appear in real life
  • ShotLink:  Golfers will authentically be replicated with accurate player ratings, skills and magnified true-to-life in-game events by utilizing the PGA Tour's proprietary real-time scoring system since 2001.
  • Trackman data:  Insights from TrackMan will allow for authentic gameplay utilizing a myriad of stats including club tuning, flight trajectory, landing position and much more.

What about Tiger Woods?

Woods is no longer with the EA Sports family after their partnership from 1999-2014. The 15-time major champion is now with the 2K franchise , and made it known to his followers where they can play as him.

The only way to play as me, and my friends, is in PGA TOUR 2K23, available now. #team2k pic.twitter.com/5lwCJ73o4v — Tiger Woods (@TigerWoods) January 20, 2023

EA Sports PGA Tour Releases March 24, Course List Revealed

The upcoming golf sim features all four Major championships, plenty of pros, and more

By Steven Petite on January 19, 2023 at 8:00AM PST

It's been more than seven years since EA Sports released a golf game, but the drought is about to end. EA Sports PGA Tour releases on March 24 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Based on early gameplay footage and the wealth of announced content, golfers have a lot to be excited for.

EA Sports is really emphasizing Major championships with this new release. Unlike the game's main competitor (PGA Tour 2K23), all four of golf's most prestigious tournaments will be included. That means you'll get to tee it up at the famous August National, home of the Masters Tournament, as well as the US Open, PGA Championship, and The Open.

At launch, EA Sports PGA Tour will have an expansive lineup of 30 real courses, including all of the Major championship tracks from 2021 through 2023. To promote accuracy, EA Sports used drones and LiDAR helicopters--which are specifically designed for mapping--to create realistic terrain. Though the average golf fan most likely wouldn't be able to spot inconsistencies in green contours or fairway undulations, EA said that even Augusta National's expert caddies noticed the realism. The caddies putted on the greens without in-game assist measures and found that their local knowledge was enough to drain putts.

In the career mode, golfers will make their way through the PGA Tour schedule and try to achieve enough points to make the FedExCup Playoffs You'll be able to create your own golfer--male or female--and earn experience points that can then be used to improve your golfer's attributes. The PGA Tour schedule is the focus, but the sim also has multiple well-known tournaments for female golfers, including the Augusta National Women's Amateur and The Evian Championship, one of the LPGA Tour's Major championships.

The 12th hole at Augusta National, home of The Masters

In addition to playing as your created golfer, you'll be able to play as some of the best golfers in the world, each of whom had their likeness and unique swing captured. The whole roster hasn't been revealed, but there are plenty of big names already: Scottie Scheffler, Patrick Cantlay, Jordan Spieth, Tony Finau, Nelly Korda, and Lexi Thompson.

Notably, you won't find Tiger Woods on the roster. The golf legend, who appeared in the title and on the cover of many entries in EA's golf series, now stars in 2K's franchise. Woods was the cover athlete for PGA Tour 2K23.

EA Sports integrated the PGA Tour's Shotlink data tracking to convert top pros' games to virtual form. For the past two decades, Shotlink has logged player swings and performance to come up with detailed stats, which are used in EA Sports PGA Tour's player ratings system.

The game also uses TrackMan, a high-end launch monitor that the majority of pros use to hone in on swing data. In practice, TrackMan statistics such as ball and swing speed, launch angle, apex, and curvature will be shown on screen as you play. And since the game has 20 different shot types for each club, there will be lots of data for golf nerds to pore over.

More details on EA Sports PGA Tour will be released in the coming weeks. Preorders go live today for both the standard and deluxe editions. The deluxe edition comes with three-day early access as well as a slew of in-game content: Scotty Cameron putter, in-game gear themed around The Players Championship and The Masters, and 1,500 Premium PGA Tour points (in-game currency). Microtransactions will be limited to cosmetics.

Like other EA sports sims, EA Play members will be able to check out a 10-hour trial starting March 21. Meanwhile, EA Play Pro members will have full access to the deluxe edition of th game starting that day.

Screen Rant

Every course in ea sports pga tour.

EA Sports PGA Tour offers 28 real-life courses and 2 fantasy courses spanning 4 biomes for players to experience, with more to come after launch!

EA Sports PGA Tour launches April 7 and gives players a chance to experience golfing at major championship venues that have been meticulously mapped. Each course in EA Sports PGA Tour is made to react the way they would in real life with not just the physics of hills and flat land but altitudes, subtle terrain changes, and wind conditions. Even the lighting transforms the look of each course based on the time of day between morning, mid day, and late afternoon with varying conditions, clouds, and atmospheric haze to enhance the realistic feel.

Screen Rant interviewed two of EA Sports PGA Tour 's developers who explained some of the intricate technology and work that went into making these courses as close to the real experience as possible. Out of the 30 courses which will be available at launch, 28 of those are true-to-life representations of courses through the PGA Tour. Two additional courses are fictional, fantasy designs created to give players a slightly different, yet still realistic approach.

EA Sports PGA Tour Courses Offers 30 Unique Courses, With More To Come

Every course for EA Sports PGA Tour is designed to behave just as uniquely as it would if players were there in real life. Everything that could impact how a ball would react has been considered and applied to each of these maps. Subtle differences that may seem almost imperceptible have been taken and adjusted in the game to make this the most realistic video game representation possible for the latest EA Sports PGA Tour series . The full list of courses at launch can be found below:

  • Augusta National
  • The Old Course at St Andrews Links
  • Pebble Beach
  • The Country Club
  • Southern Hills

After the game launches, there are plans to continue to add more courses to the game. Some of these will include Oak Hill, The Los Angeles Country Club, Royal Liverpool, and Olympia Fields. EA Sports PGA Tour has partnered with LPGA Tour to bring female golfers into the game as well as the Amundi Evian Championship.

Each Course Is Meticulously Crafted For EA Sports PGA Tour

To develop these courses in EA Sports PGA Tour , advanced technology was used such as custom LiDAR helicopter flights that scanned data-point-density, survey-grade GPS, drone technology, and more which gave them pin-point accuracy for every rock and blade of grass for many courses. Recordings were created for how distinct cuts of grass could make the ball behave differently, while terrain maps provided precise renderings for tee markers, rock formations, and other types of elements on the courses.

The detail and specificity with which developers looked at every aspect of designing the courses for EA Sports PGA Tour are awe-inspiring. EA Sports PGA Tour will release on April 7, in order to coincide with 2023 Masters, so players can follow along with their favorite golfers.

READ NOW: Everything we know about PGA Tour 2K23

They won’t be published straight away though, you will have the chance to go in and make some changes and well needed updates with the new content in the game. Fortunately for players this mode is more user friendly now, according to the developers, this way it should entice new players into the course designer.

This means making sure there are less things on a screen at a time and other quality of life improvements, as well as a detailed tutorial to ease players in.

One of the biggest additions to PGA Tour 2K23’s Course Designer , is the focus on new flora. There has been a large focus on foliage, trees and nature in general for the new game, whilst there is scope for more content to potentially release in the future.

There will be updated:

EA SPORTS™ PGA TOUR™ Patch Notes 12.0

Coming to the ea play list: discover new courses, play as jack nicklaus, and take on the augusta national par 3 course..

On April 2nd, EA SPORTS™ PGA TOUR™ will receive an update that includes a new season, several gameplay improvements, and game-wide bug fixes. Read on to learn about what’s coming next.

Welcome to Season 11!

Season 11 launches as the largest content update to date for EA SPORTS™ PGA TOUR™ with the release of four new courses and the ultimate Major champion of all time, Jack Nicklaus joins as the first playable golfer added since the game's launch. Moreover, starting April 4th, EA Play^ members can enjoy the EA SPORTS™ PGA TOUR™ updates available via the Play List. As with all previous updates, the new courses and Jack Nicklaus are included with no additional purchase required. This now makes a total of 39 playable courses and 23 playable pro golfers.

Included as a 2024 Major Course, Valhalla Golf Course is located in Louisville, Kentucky, a modern, parkland-style course designed by Jack Nicklaus. Characterized by its wide fairways, large, undulating greens, and challenging water hazards, it has been the venue for multiple major championships, including the PGA Championship and the Ryder Cup. Since it hosts the 2024 PGA Championship, Career mode has been updated to have the PGA Championship rotate every season between Valhalla, Oak Hill, and Southern Hills.

Pinehurst No. 2, the second 2024 Major Course to debut, is located in North Carolina and is a world-renowned golf course known for its crowned, undulating greens and strategically placed bunkers. Designed by the legendary Donald Ross, it has hosted more single golf championships, including the U.S. Open Championship and PGA Championship, than any other course in America. It will host the 2024 U.S. Open Championship, so Career mode has been updated to rotate the U.S. Open every season between Pinehurst No. 2, The Los Angeles Country Club, and The Country Club.

The third 2024 Major Course, renowned for its "Postage Stamp" eighth hole, is Royal Troon. Known as a world-class course, with traditional links located on the rugged coast of Scotland. Offering golfers challenging wind conditions, deep bunkers, large putting greens, and undulating fairways, Royal Troon is a frequent stop in the Open Championship rota, including this year. The Open will now rotate in Career mode between Royal Troon, Royal Liverpool, and St Andrews.

Further celebrating the tradition of Masters week, the Augusta National Par 3 Course will also be added to the game. The course is stunningly beautiful and serves as the traditional venue for the Par 3 Contest held annually on the eve of the Masters Tournament.

All four of these incredible courses are now available to play in Quick Play and Private Match and will be featured in Online and Tournament playlist rotations as well. As previous Ryder Cup hosts, Pinehurst No. 2 and Valhalla have also been added to Ryder Cup formats in Quick Play, Online, and Private Match.

Jack Nicklaus, often referred to as “the Golden Bear," is renowned for his powerful drives, precision iron play, and exceptional putting ability, which contributed to his record 18 major championship wins. Nicklaus's six Masters titles add to his legendary status as the greatest Major Champion golfer of all time. When playing as Jack Nicklaus, you’ll notice that he has his own set of golf clubs, four outfits to choose from, and his unique swing animation. Jack Nicklaus is available to play in any format that supports playing with pro golfers.

Season 11 Pro Pass** includes a wide variety of cosmetics in the premium tier including a selection of spring-themed apparel, Jack Nicklaus’ clubs, and one of his outfits. Completing Season 11 Pro Pass will earn you Jack Nicklaus’ '65 Masters Ball Spec in the free tier and the J.LINDEBERG “KV Tour - Azalea” outfit in the premium tier. Throughout the season you’ll earn tokens to level up your Pro Pass by completing live Quests and playing rounds in Online, Tournaments, and Career modes.

Challenges mode has been updated with two new challenge series. The “Drive Chip and Putt” challenges series offers a taste of what it feels like to compete in the famous junior golf competition. The “Jack Nicklaus” challenge series showcases the history of the Golden Bear, featuring some of the best rounds from his Major Championship victories, and a variety of other memorable moments from his legendary career.

Additional Patch Notes

Horses for Courses: Green jacket winners mean 'go' at Augusta National

A tradition unlike any other, the Masters Tournament opens the major championship portion of the annual PGA TOUR schedule.

Founded in Augusta, Georgia, Augusta National Golf Club opened its doors in 1934. Designed by Dr. Alister Mackenzie and Bobby Jones, the 2024 scorecard reflects the commitment to the modern game. Playing to 7,555 yards, 10 more yards than 2023, the par-72 will play the longest in history, but other changes will be prevalent this week.

The addition of yards on the scorecard comes from a new tee box on No. 2. Modified green contours on the second, fourth and sixth holes add extra challenges to an already demanding front nine. The back nine is where the fireworks happen annually, but arriving at Amen Corner in contention with a chance is the first order of business. Players with experience in those moments from past Sundays have a major advantage this week.

Scottie Scheffler (+400) needed only three tries to ace this examination. In 16 career rounds, he’s posted 72 or better 14 times and has never finished outside T19 (2020). Defending his title last year in his fourth visit, he added his second top-10 payday with T10. The Texan, joined by Matt Fitzpatrick (+3300), are the only two players to square less than 20 bogeys over the last two editions. Only Jon Rahm and Jordan Spieth have a better career scoring average (more than 10 rounds played).

Jon Rahm (+1200): Making his eighth trip, the 2023 reigning champion has never had to request an early checkout. Joining his countrymen Ballesteros, Olazabal, and Garcia donning the green jacket last year, the Spaniard has five top-10 paydays from seven previous visits. Playing 28 rounds, his scoring average of 70.50 is the best of the qualified players who have posted between 25 and 49 career rounds. The two-time major champion has produced the lowest or second-lowest round in two of the last three editions.

Players listed are in the field this week; 2024 season stats.

The ultimate second-shot golf course, Augusta National requires every tool in the bag. Uneven lies in the middle of the fairway, let alone from the second cut, will test the resolve and execution of the best ball-strikers. Controlling the golf ball into the right spots on the greens with the correct trajectory and spin will create scoring chances. Finding Greens in Regulation, usually below the hole, will help to keep bogeys off the card. The water penalty areas, five in total, start at No. 11 on the back nine.

Patrick Reed (+6600) , who putted the dimples off the ball in his victory in 2018, is the only winner in the last 10 years not to finish T7 or better for the week in this category. Cashing in the top 10 three times in his last four visits, including T4 in 2023, proves his game translates in Georgia.

Par-4 Scoring Average

Everyone will score on the four par-5s, but the 10 par-4s provide one of the toughest challenges annually on TOUR. Not including the 2020 November event, Augusta National has ranked in the top four in five of the last six years. The only year outside the top four was the 2021 edition (T8). Grinding out pars and keeping the big numbers off the card will allow the results on the par-5s to add separation instead of trying to mitigate damage.

The only player under 40 with more top-10 finishes than Jordan Spieth (+2200) has never set foot inside Butler Cabin. Finishing T2 on debut in 2015, the Texan became the second-youngest winner (Tiger Woods, 1997). Posting 270 during his win, he tied Tiger Woods for the tournament scoring record and became the first player to put 19-under par on the board. The three-time major champion has made the cut in nine of 10 starts and cashed T4 or better six times, including two of the last three years.

In November 2020, Dustin Johnson (+4000) posted 20-under, the lowest tournament total, to win his first green jacket and secure his fifth top-10 finish.

A gust of wind, an uneven lie, or indecision will lead to plenty of missed GIR. When missing the target, the ability to play check-check-stop, bump-and-run, or the flop shot will keep the momentum rolling. The other half of this equation is holing putts once the ball is on the green. Which way is Rae’s Creek? Am I seeing what I think I’m seeing in this green slope? Experience is a fantastic 15th club to possess from tee box to hole location this week. Ironically, the only winner from the last 10 not to register in the top 16 was five-time winner Tiger Woods (+150000). The last three winners in April ranked first or second in Scrambling.

Hideki Matsuyama (+1800) claimed his green jacket on his 10th attempt. The Japanese star has only one finish outside T19 from his last nine consecutive weekends and has cashed in 11 of 12 trips. Pounding GIR and getting up and down from everywhere reduces the pressure off his putter. The only winner from Asia, he enters the week with a scoring average of 71.54 in 46 rounds.

Rory McIlroy (+1000) is the only highlighted non-winner this week. Signing for top-10 paychecks in seven of 15 visits, he is the highest-ranked player on the all-time money list without a win. Only Woods and three-time winner Phil Mickelson (+20000) have produced more top-10 results of those expected to challenge this week. Missing the cut in 2021 broke a run of 10 consecutive weekends. Closing with 64 in 2022, he snuck in the back door to claim second place, his best result. Missing the cut in 2023 changed his preparation for this year’s event.

Oddsmaker’s Extras

  • Xander Schauffele (+1400): Finishing tied for second on debut in 2019 to Woods, this Californian has added T10 and T3 in two of his last three visits. More than comfortable on the grounds, over 22 rounds, his career scoring average is 71.32.
  • Brooks Koepka (+2000): Joining Schauffele as co-runner-up in 2019, the five-time major champion is still looking for his first green jacket. Last year he led by two shots after 54 holes, but a disappointing Sunday round of 75 knocked him to T2 again. Missing the cut in two of his last three attempts was due to a balky knee, no longer an issue holding him back.
  • Jason Day (+6600): The Australian exploded onto the scene in 2011. Posting a second-round 64 on debut, he was left behind by Charl Schwartzel’s four birdies in the final four holes yet shared second. From 2011 through 2019, he cashed outside T20 twice, T22 and T28. Missing the cut in 2021, the 2015 PGA Champion opened with 67 last year before fading to T39.
  • Tony Finau (+4000): Signing for T10 or better in three of his first four visits, the big hitter has cooled with T26 and T35 in the last two tournaments. Never missing a cut in six tries and posting a 71.33 scoring, it’s obvious his game translates.
  • Corey Conners (+6600): The Canadian will be looking to join countryman Mike Weir as the only winners from north of the border. Missing the cut last season after winning the Valero Texas Open the week prior, he snapped a streak of three years running with a top-10 finish. He won’t have that problem to worry about this week!
