Complete guide to the PGA Tour of Australasia season
by Australian Golf Media
By Tony Webeck
Superstars back on Australian shores, time-honoured tournaments returning to the schedule and a format change that promises to deliver an enthralling race to crown an Order of Merit champion; the 2022/2023 ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia season is coming in hot.
Starting with the CKB WA PGA Championship presented by TX Civil & Logistics at the iconic Kalgoorlie Golf Course on the western fringe of the Nullarbor Plain, there are 16 scheduled tournaments throughout Australia and New Zealand over the next six months.
The ISPS HANDA Australian Open will be contested for the first time since 2019 and will break new ground of its own.
For the first time the Australian Open will bring both male and female golfers together at two storied venues in Victoria Golf Club and Kingston Heath Golf Club.
Legends such as Karrie Webb and Geoff Ogilvy will tee it up alongside stars of today such as Cameron Smith, Adam Scott, Hannah Green and Stephanie Kyriacou and two-time men’s champion Matt Jones.
The Australian Open is also one of two DP World Tour co-sanctioned events as one of golf’s biggest tours kicks off its season Down Under.
With record prize money of $2 million, the Fortinet Australian PGA Championship will serve as the first event of the new DP World Tour season where former winners in Smith and Scott will go head-to-head with Kiwi No.1 Ryan Fox, Min Woo Lee, Lucas Herbert and defending champion Jed Morgan.
With people now able to freely move between Australia and New Zealand, the season is also significantly enhanced by the return of the New Zealand Open for the first time since 2020 and the NZ PGA Championship which has been on hiatus since 2019.
There will be extensive television coverage over the course of the season and the move to a points-based Order of Merit is designed to deliver a thrilling finale in April where numerous pathway opportunities will be awarded to the top finishers.
“After two challenging years due to COVID-19 we are thrilled to unveil a 16-tournament schedule that welcomes back some of the largest events on the PGA Tour of Australasia calendar,” said PGA of Australia Tournaments Director Australasia.
“Travel restrictions have limited our capacity to conduct tournaments in New Zealand so we can’t wait to get back to two events with such rich histories.
“It’s also great to have the Australian Open back and the coming together of both men and women on the Melbourne Sandbelt promises to begin a new chapter for two of Australia’s most treasured championships.
“This season also represents the return of some of our very best players to our biggest tournaments and their enthusiasm and support should ensure the summer of golf is one of our most successful in many years.”
The season commences with consecutive tournaments in Western Australia followed by a three-week break back.
Starting with the Victorian PGA Championship at Moonah Links from November 10-13 there is a five-week run of tournaments highlighted by the Australian PGA Championship at Royal Queensland Golf Club (November 24-27) and Australian Open (December 1-4).
In addition to tournaments in four of the country’s capital cities, the PGA Tour of Australasia season also stretches into regional communities on the Murray River, Victoria’s West Gippsland region and Mornington and Bellarine peninsulas, the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales and Kalgoorlie-Boulder in WA, where it all begins on Thursday. 2022/2023 schedule

The PGA Tour of Australasia continues to grow its schedule, showcasing the country’s best professionals in events being staged across six states and territories in August, October, November and December.
The first half of the 2023-24 season will offer a total of $5.45 million in prizemoney and is highlighted by the two Australian majors which form part of the start of the DP World Tour’s 2024 Race to Dubai.
The Fortinet Australian PGA Championship at Royal Queensland Golf Club (November 23-26) and the ISPS HANDA Australian Open for men and women, as well as the Australian All Abilities Championship, at The Australian and The Lakes (November 30-December 3).
After a successful PNG Open in May which started the 2023/24 season, players will now head north for the second event of the season, the Northern Territory PGA Championship held at Palmerston Golf and Country Club on August 17-20.
“We are very excited by the schedule for the 2023/24 season as we watch golf continue to boom in Australia,” PGA CEO Gavin Kirkman said.
“The opportunities and pathways this schedule will provide both our current and next generation of superstars continues to be a main focus and we can’t wait to see who the next David Micheluzzi will be post the 2023/24 season.
“After the NT PGA Championship players will then head west to begin a very busy seven events in an eight-week swing, including our two Aussie majors.
“From the start of October through to December, there will be a PGA Tour of Australasia tournament to attend in person or watch on television almost every week, highlighting the elite players in our game on some great golf courses.
“The Fortinet Australian PGA Championship and ISPS HANDA Australian Open will again undoubtedly be highlights of Australia’s sporting summer as we look to build on what we achieved with those two tournaments last year.
“Thanks to our co-sanctioning agreement with the DP World Tour we will see a great mix of homegrown and international talent.”
There’s a new home for the WA Open which will be held at the Joondalup Resort (October 5-8) as the first of consecutive weeks in professional golf in the west. The resort’s Quarry and Lakes courses will be in play for the first WA Open at Joondalup since 1987.
It will also incorporate a 36-hole All Abilities Championship.
The Tour will then visit a familiar location, the Kalgoorlie Golf Course, which will host the WA PGA Championship for the 12th time from October 12-15.
“From the start of October through to December, there will be a PGA Tour of Australasia tournament to attend in person or watch on television almost every week, highlighting the elite players in our game on some great golf courses." – Gavin Kirkman.
Joining the schedule as part of the innovative Webex Players Series is the inaugural TPS South Australia hosted by Greg Blewett which will be held in the famous wine region of McLaren Vale at the Willunga Golf Club from October 19-22.
TPS South Australia will break new ground as the first mixed event, where men and women compete on the same course for the same trophy and prizemoney, to be held in the state. It will also be the first PGA Tour of Australasia tournament in South Australia since 2007.
Following the first TPS South Australia, it’s the Sunshine State’s turn with the Queensland PGA Championship at Nudgee Golf Club in Brisbane on November 2-5.
Victorian golf fans will then have the chance to see back-to-back tournaments in their state – the Gippsland Super 6 at Warragul Country Club (November 9-12) and the Victorian PGA Championship at Moonah Links (November 16-19) which is the last event before the Fortinet Australian PGA Championship at Royal Queensland.
Building on the recent success of its tournament broadcast coverage, which has brought the Tour and its new era of stars onto screens across the country and overseas, all of the PGA Tour of Australasia events in October and November will continue to be broadcast live on Fox Sports and Kayo , with the two Australian majors, the PGA and Open, also simulcast on Nine and 9Now .

Playing the Masters Is by Invitation Only. Here’s How Golfers Get One.
There’s a long list of possible ways, like being a past winner, but the creation of LIV Golf has complicated the process.
By Paul Sullivan
Despite a missed putt on the 18th hole at the Texas Children’s Houston Open, Stephan Jaeger still punched his ticket to Augusta National Golf Club, where he will be playing in his first Masters Tournament this week.
There are many ways to get an invitation to the Masters, and Jaeger, 34, found one of them.
But first, he missed a putt that would have clinched a victory over the former Masters champion Scottie Scheffler . Then Scheffler missed a shorter putt that would have forced a playoff with Jaeger.
In the end what mattered was that Jaeger won the tournament, not how he did it, and in doing so he earned an invitation to the Masters.
“I couldn’t have thought, dreamed up a better week to do it,” he said after his victory.
The Masters, the season’s first major for men, is an invitational, which means it is up to the members of Augusta National to send invitations and create the field of men who will compete for the coveted green jacket. This is unique among the major championships.
This year extra attention has been paid to how players secure their invitation largely because of the rise of LIV Golf, the league that has poached a dozen top players. (More on that later.) But how players earn their Augusta invitations has been part of a bigger story around getting into the PGA Tour’s top tournaments, which have the strongest fields and high prize money.
Fair to say that some golf fans are confused, and that some players are upset about being excluded.
What drew new interest in the qualifying process was Joaquin Niemann ’s journey to play well, win and get the attention of Fred Ridley, Augusta National’s chairman, who could grant him a special invitation.
Niemann, 28, from Chile, had played in four Masters tournaments. His first invitation came in 2018 after he won the Latin American Amateur Championship, which Augusta supports and whose winner gets an invitation. Last year, he finished tied for 16th place, his best Masters finish.
Normally, a player like that would have enough world ranking points to qualify easily for a Masters invitation. But Niemann went to LIV in 2022, and his ranking fell from 18 in 2022 to 91 today. That put him outside the top 50 who get invitations.
Even though he has played well this year on LIV, the league does not qualify for world ranking points because of its staggered starts, shorter tournaments and team format. Other LIV players in the field have exemptions if they are past major champions or were in the top 50 at the end of last year.
These include Jon Rahm, the defending champion ; Phil Mickelson, a past champion who contended last year; and Brooks Koepka, who finished second last year before winning the P.G.A. Championship , which comes with five years of Masters invitations.
So Niemann, whose representative declined to make him available, took to the global road and played on various international tours to showcase himself to Augusta National. He won the Australian Open last year and notched top 10 finishes in three other international tournaments in Australia; Dubai, the United Arab Emirates; and Oman. He also won two LIV events.
Augusta has a history of inviting the best international players. In the 1980s, it introduced Bernhard Langer of Germany, Greg Norman of Australia and Seve Ballesteros of Spain to the world of golf.
Neimann’s plan worked. He received one of three special invitations that went to international players not already in the tournament.
“The Masters Tournament has a longstanding tradition of inviting leading international players who are not otherwise qualified,” Ridley said in February in announcing the special exemptions. “Today’s announcement represents the tournament’s continued commitment towards developing interest in the game of golf across the world.”
Niemann was the only LIV player who wasn’t a former Masters or major champion to get a special invitation. Talor Gooch was ranked 58th in the world when he tied for 34th place at last year’s Masters. He received that invitation because he had been within the top 50 at the end of 2022, which is one of the criteria. He then went on to win three times on LIV that season en route to being named LIV’s player of the year.
Yet Gooch, who is ranked 550th in the world, did not receive an invitation this year and wasn’t happy about it.
“If Rory McIlroy goes and completes his grand slam without some of the best players in the world, there’s just going to be an asterisk,” he said. “It’s just the reality.” McIlroy has won three of the majors, but lacks the Masters.
Few agreed.
So what are the various ways into the Masters? The most coveted is as a past champion. They get a lifetime invitation, though they’re encouraged to stop when they’re not competitive. This year was supposed to be Langer’s final Masters at 66, before he was injured.
Next to that, winning one of the other three major championships gets a player five years of invitations, the Players Championship gets three, and an Olympic gold medal winner gets one invitation.
To honor the tournament’s amateur roots, invitations go to the winner and runner-up of the United States Amateur Championship and the winners of the British amateur, Asia-Pacific Amateur and the Latin America Amateur. The winner of the N.C.A.A. championship also receives an invitation.
Stewart Hagestad, the reigning United States Mid-Amateur champion and a Walker Cup stalwart, will be playing in the Masters for the third time, having won the Mid-Amateur in 2016, 2021 and 2023. He made the cut in 2017, his first year, and won the award for the low amateur.
The rest of the invitations are based on how people have played in recent major championships as well as anyone who won a PGA Tour event in the previous year.
This year it totals about 90 players, a small field for a major championship. The other three majors have qualifying processes. The United States and British Opens are for anyone who can play their way in. The PGA Championship creates its field from touring and club pros.
Yet the split between the PGA Tour and LIV has created a complex situation beyond the Masters: which players get to play into the new Signature Events on the PGA Tour. These events have large purses, limited fields and in some cases no cuts. They’re not majors, but they’re at top courses with stout competition.
Like the Masters, the top 50 in the world golf rankings get into the Signature Events. But then it’s a scramble to fill other, limited spots at some other events. And it’s all new this year.
So, the PGA Tour partnered with Aon, the risk management consultant, to brand the groups that swing into and out of contention, the so-called Aon Next 10, the players who have moved into spots 51 to 60, and the Aon Swing 5, those who do well in the tournaments leading up to the Signature Events.
It’s been even more confusing for fans, and a scramble for players, because who gets into what is a moving target.
Andy Weitz, chief marketing officer at Aon, sees it differently. That confusion is an opportunity to show how the best golfers in the world play over the season.
“We were impressed by the modeling that showed a lot of movement in the top 50 in the course of the year, particularly in numbers 30 to 50,” Weitz said. “It’s fluid in a meaningful way. It creates interesting moments.”
An earlier version of this article mischaracterized Aon’s role in the PGA Tour’s Aon Next 10 and the Aon Swing 5. The company brought the marketing language to the tour, not the idea of creating the categories.

LIV’s Greg Norman never experienced the Masters as he did this week
AUGUSTA, Ga. — Greg Norman played in the Masters 23 times. He had eight top-five finishes and was the runner-up three times. His play during his 1981 debut here is what inspired his “Great White Shark” nickname. But he had never experienced Augusta National Golf Club as he did Wednesday.
Norman, the LIV Golf chief executive , was like every other ticketed customer during the practice round, jostling among the crowd and walking outside the ropes as he watched players prepare for Thursday’s opening round.
“Walking around here today, there’s not one person who said to me, ‘Why did you do LIV?’ ” he said in a brief interview on the course. “There’s been hundreds of people, even security guys, stopping me, saying, ‘Hey, what you’re doing is fantastic.’ To me, that tells you that what we have and the platform fits within the ecosystem, and it’s good for the game of golf.”
LIV’s presence at the Masters has added intrigue to the storied tournament and stirred questions about the field. Thirteen of the 89 players in this year’s event come from the LIV circuit, a number that would surely be higher if LIV events were recognized by the Official World Golf Ranking . Past champions, such as Phil Mickelson, Jon Rahm and Dustin Johnson, are automatically invited to compete, but several LIV golfers who are enjoying strong seasons had no pathway to Augusta National, including Abraham Ancer, Paul Casey, Louis Oosthuizen and Talor Gooch.
“There’s probably a couple that have been overlooked that should be in,” Norman said. “What is that number? I’m not going to give it a definitive number, but they’re definitely quality players that have done incredible performances over the last six to nine months that are worthy of it.”
Speaking with reporters Wednesday, Fred Ridley, the chairman of the Augusta National, reiterated that LIV Golf didn’t meet standards for recognition from the OWGR but said the Masters would extend “special invitations” to any exceptional LIV players, regardless of their world ranking.
“If we felt that there were a player or players, whether they played on the LIV tour or any other tour, who were deserving of an invitation to the Masters … we would exercise that discretion with regard to special invitations,” he said.
One such invite was extended for this year’s tournament. Joaquín Niemann has slid from No. 15 in the world rankings to No. 93, but he was included in the Masters field , in part because of his success outside the LIV schedule, including a win at the Australian Open in December.
Eighteen LIV golfers qualified for last year’s Masters, and that figure stands to shrink annually, absent OWGR points. Seven LIV players here are past Masters champions, and three others have won another major. Only two LIV players — Tyrrell Hatton and Adrian Meronk — qualified via the world ranking.
“Our goal is to have, to the greatest extent possible, the best field in golf, the best players in the world,” Ridley said. “Having said that, we never have had all the best players in the world because of the structure of our tournament. It’s an invitational. It’s limited field. It’s a small field. … We’re a little bit different situation. But we do have that flexibility, as I mentioned earlier, and I would not foreclose that we would consider that in the future.”
Norman had not been at the Masters since 2021, when he was an analyst for SiriusXM. Ridley made headlines a year ago when he explained that an invitation was withheld from Norman for the 2023 tournament “to keep the focus on the competition.”
This year, Norman didn’t bother waiting for an invitation and came to the course with a pair of LIV executives through the main gate. He wore his familiar white straw hat and a LIV shirt as he walked the course, watching LIV players such as Rahm, Sergio García and Patrick Reed play their practice rounds.
“I’m here because we have 13 players that won 10 Masters between them,” Norman said. “So I’m here just to support them, do the best I can to show them, ‘Hey, you know, the boss is here rooting for you.’ ”
Fans occasionally stopped Norman for photos or to shake his hand, but there were no signs of animosity for the man who launched LIV, revamped the golf landscape and lured many of the game’s biggest names away from the PGA Tour.
Players from both circuits have been calling for some sort of reconciliation that would allow the world’s best players to compete against one another more often, but industry leaders don’t expect the chasm to close any time soon. The PGA Tour continues to negotiate with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, which owns LIV, about a potential partnership.
“LIV is completely autonomous to that, to be honest with you,” Norman said of the PIF. “I’m not even privy to any of the conversations, which I’m happy about because we’re focused on delivering what we promised the world we would deliver.”
While detractors predicted LIV players might struggle at last year’s Masters because of the lighter competition schedule, LIV players occupied three of the top six spots on the final leader board, including Brooks Koepka and Mickelson, who tied for second. And last year’s winner, Rahm, joined LIV in December . Norman said he hasn’t heard much from detractors ahead of this year’s tournament.
“I try to strip away all that other stuff, all the white noise and stuff,” he said. “These guys are the best. So when the best get with the best, you’re always going to see the best rise at the top, no matter who or where they play.”
