PGA Tour 2K21 (Switch) Review
by Neal Ronaghan - August 23, 2020, 6:17 pm EDT Discuss in talkback!
Even amid technical problems, pro golf’s return to Nintendo platforms is a good one.
When there is a famine, you might be accepting of even a meager feast. That’s the case with PGA Tour 2K21 on Switch, the first PGA Tour-licensed golf game on a Nintendo platform since the Wii. Feature-wise, the basic game is fantastic. The golf controls are stellar, the single-player content features a lot of customization and accessibility, and the multiplayer features are soundly great. Unfortunately, the Switch port is littered with visual bugs, sluggish menus, and the occasional crash. While PGA Tour 2K21 is one of the best golf games I’ve ever played, the execution on Switch is rough around the edges.
The controls are easy to learn but hold a lot of depth. In lieu of the timed button presses of Mario Golf, you flick an analog stick down and up in a way that mimics an actual golf swing. It can be fiddly occasionally, as you have to do the swing in rhythm or else you run the risk of horrendously shanking a shot by going too slow. A wealth of options on top of that can let you tweak your approach, shot type, and more. Effective tutorials and flexible difficulty options make it manageable to learn everything. It’s impressive how the game manages to thread the needle between a challenging simulation of the sport while still being fun and approachable.
The core single-player mode is the career mode, where you create a golfer and head out to become a PGA Tour Champion. You can start from the bottom in junior tours or start right in the big leagues. The player creator is deep, though you can only create male golfers despite the in-game announcers always referring to your character by the “they” pronoun. As you can see in the video review, you can make a dumb-looking pro golfer and dress them up in clashing plaid clothing. The amount of clothing options is daunting, made worse on the Switch because sifting through the various menus is slow and laborious. The other customizable part of your golfer is their bag. By default, you start with a run-of-the-mill assortment, but you can unlock or purchase (with in-game currency) various other clubs. This isn’t something you are forced to fine-tune, but you can definitely go down a rabbit hole to tweak your bag to your preferences. However, like the clothing, the menus are horrifically sluggish.
The career mode is enjoyable, with lots of content to play through and a lot of side objectives, such as Sponsor Goals and Rivals. Sponsor Goals unlock new gear from different companies as you do things like get a certain amount of birdies or making a percentage of putts. Rivals match you up with different pros, and you get new gear when you beat them in enough stats over different rounds. You do earn experience in level up, but for the most part, all the skill of your golfer depends on your own play. Better clubs can help, but you don’t bump stat levels or anything. Thankfully, just playing golf in this game is fun, but the rewards are almost all cosmetic, made more disappointing by how clumsy sorting through items is on Switch.
Outside of the slow menus, other technical issues have been consistent in my time with the Switch version. Every so often, a hole would just display completely in black. I could back out of the hole and come back to it displaying fine, but you can’t always do that in game. Also, when loading a course, I was met with a few total game crashes. Your mileage may vary on how often, if ever, these problems arise, but they happened frequently enough that I long for a patch. PGA Tour 2K21 is totally playable on Switch, just every so often, something bad will probably happen. The visuals are also just less detailed here as well. You might not notice it unless you see another version of the game, but there are no crowds on the side of holes. It doesn’t bother me, but it’s funny that in the lore of PGA Tour 2K21, the Switch version is the most true to what sports are in 2020.
Thankfully, outside of the aforementioned technical snafus, the other modes are fine. I was impressed by the course creator, which offers a robust experience. The game will auto-generate a course based on some selections you make, and then you can tweak it to your heart’s content. The interface is awkward, but it works. You can make creative holes, or absolute hellscapes. I made one that had a small green surrounded by steep hills, so if you flubbed a putt, you were screwed. I made another that had you tee off from like 800 feet in the air, which begs the question: how did the golfer even get up there. All of your courses can be shared online and you can also check out other people’s courses. Playing other people’s courses could use some better filtering and highlighting, but it’s overall a neat feature.
The requisite local and online multiplayer matches are prevalent as well, with a whole bunch of match types. You can play with four players on the same system, passing the controller around if you want to or have to. Societies is the most interesting online addition. You can essentially create your own events, tournaments, and seasons that players can compete in, even requiring in-game currency to sweeten the pot for the victory. However, there is no crossplay with other platforms. Since this is the first PGA Tour game on Switch, it’s hard to tell what kind of community might show up here, especially with it being technically an inferior version. If you can get some buddies to all play online, the online societies is a brilliant concept, but I worry about its longevity.
Despite an array of troublesome technical issues, PGA Tour 2K21 is still a ton of fun on Nintendo Switch. The controls and mechanics are incredible and the amount of accessibility options, features, and courses is satisfying. This might be the best swinging of the golf club I have ever experienced in a video game. While the port to Switch is bumpy, it’s workable. I know I personally am going to sink more hours into this, especially in handheld mode. I’ll lament the sedate menus and game crashes, but I’ll take the compromises for off-TV play. If you do want to look at prettier visuals with less issues on your TV, go check out PGA Tour 2K21 on another platform.

Will PGA Tour 2K23 be available for the Nintendo Switch?
PGA Tour 2K23 will be released later this year worldwide, and it will mark a major step forward for 2K Sports and HB Studios. This will be the first time that the title will receive a current-gen version, alongside all of the new features and golfers that players expect. You might be wondering if Nintendo Switch owners are able to get in on the action. We have some information on this, so let’s go over what we know so far.
As of this writing, a Nintendo Switch version of PGA Tour 2K23 is not currently scheduled to be released, nor is a version available on the Nintendo eShop or other brick-and-mortar marketplaces.
When 2K and HB Studios announced on August 22 that PGA Tour 2K23 will launch later this year, the duo confirmed that the title will be made available for the Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC. PGA Tour 2K23 will go live this October, with those who purchase the Tiger Woods and Deluxe Editions getting three days of early access.
Related: When is the release date for PGA Tour 2K23?
However, a Nintendo Switch version was not announced. This would be a contrast from the franchise’s past, as PGA Tour 2K21 did receive a Switch version. Although, the Switch version of PGA Tour 2K21 did not originally have all the features that the PC, Xbox, and PlayStation versions had, namely the Course Designer. 2K and HB Studios did reverse course in 2020, adding it into the game as part of an update at launch.
PGA Tour 2K23 appears to be following somewhat of a trend in the sports games market for the Nintendo Switch. Some titles, like NHL and Madden, have straight up not launched on the Switch in the past, while WWE 2K has not dropped a title on the platform since 2016. Other titles, like FIFA and NBA 2K, do, but the features on those games are limited.
This could change, however, as 2K could opt to release a Switch version of 2K23 at some point. If so, this article will be updated to reflect that.

The Best Golf Games on Nintendo Switch
Want to play some golf without leaving the sofa? We’ve got you covered.
Golf games might not be quite as popular as they used to be. We had a drought for years with no official PGA game. And we had to wait far longer than we’d have liked for a new Mario Golf game. But all that said, there’s still a healthy selection of golf games on Nintendo Switch, and we’ve rounded up the best of them right here.
Whether you’re looking for a serious golf simulator or want something a little more fun, there’s a golf game on Switch for you. The PGA license is back in full swing (ha, get it?) thanks to 2K Games. And there’s more than a handful of fun, arcade-style golf games, perfect for playing with friends.
So: whatever sort of golf you feel like playing, read on. We’ve weeded out the bogeys and left only the hole-in-ones.
Want to support GameSpew? If you decide to buy any of the games on this list, please consider doing so via our affiliate links, included below each entry. It won’t cost you anything extra, but we’ll get a small slice of the purchase.
1. pga tour 2k21.
If you’re after a serious golfing game on Switch, then you can’t do better than PGA Tour 2K21 right now. After creating your character, PGA Tour 2K21 allows you to embark on a sizeable career, working your way up from the bottom. Along the way you’ll earn a host of rewards, including money that can be used to buy new clubs and clothing options, allowing you to customise your character even further. Outside of the career, you can even design your own courses before sharing them with others.
What might disappoint you about PGA Tour 2K21 , however, is that you can’t play as any professional golfers in it. You can play against them, sure, but if you want to take control of Tiger Woods or Justin Thomas, you’re out of luck. Still, this truly is the best simulation of the sport on Switch, so be sure to give it a go.

2. Mario Golf: Super Rush
Want to sprint a golf course or two with Mario and chums? You can do that in Mario Golf: Super Rush . The latest entry in the Mario Golf series, Super Rush features an adventure mode in which you import or create a Mii before embarking on a journey of golf enlightenment. Unfortunately it’s not very long, but it’s fairly fun while it lasts and is a good way to learn the game’s mechanics. Outside of adventure mode, there’s a single player challenge mode, and of course you can play a game of golf against friends, either online or offline.
The Super Rush in the title alludes to the new Speed Golf mode, in which after taking a shot you must run to your ball like a maniac. And along the way, you can obstruct other players if you wish, making it harder for them to get their golf ball in the hole. It’s just a shame that Mario Golf: Super Rush doesn’t have a great deal of content. If you’re after one of the best golf games on Switch, however, it’s worth checking out.

3. What the Golf?
Forget serious golfing for a second. If you simply want to have fun, they don’t come much more enjoyable than What the Golf? . Unless you’re looking for a serious sim, this is hands-down the best golfing game on Switch. Trust us.
Why? Well, it’s clearly been designed with love, and with only one goal in mind: for its players to have a riotous, hilarious time. At first glance it might look like a normal golfing game, and indeed, your goal is always to get something to the flag on the green. We say ‘something’ because rarely is it a regular golf ball you’re putting. Fling a golf club across the screen? That’s more like it in What the Golf ?. The best levels are those that poke fun at other games: we love the levels based on SUPERHOT and Angry Birds . If you’re yet to play this, do so pronto.

4. Sports Party
Although Ubisoft’s Sports Party game includes a range of sports other than golf, it’s still one of the best golf games on Switch right now. It offers up perhaps the most realistic golfing experience on the console, even if it is a bit limited.
It’s a game designed to be played competitively with fellow players in the same room. You’ll each take it in turns to make your way around a number of courses, choosing either 3, 6 or 9 holes. Like any good golf game, there’s a variety of clubs to choose between; so whether you’re on the green, in the rough or on the fairway you’ll want to change your club to match. Motion controls make it a lot of fun too – just be careful not to hit anyone when you swing your Joy-Con!

5. Golf Club Wasteland
Now, Golf Club Wasteland isn’t exactly a traditional golfing game. It does, however, require you to consider the trajectory of your ball, hit with the appropriate amount of power, and try to get in the hole as efficiently as possible. But rather than playing on a green, you’re instead playing on an apocalyptic wasteland. This is Earth, in the future, when all it is good for is a rich man’s crazy golf course.
You’ll need to navigate buildings and other obstacles as you aim to hit your ball through each level, where a hole waits for you on the other side. It’s a seriously atmospheric game, too, with an excellent soundtrack to keep you company. It’s a golf game on Switch quite like no other, and if you like the idea of a 2D golfing experience with a twist, you really ought to pick it up.

6. Golf Story
Bet you never thought you’d see a game that combines classic RPG storytelling with golf. Well, you have now; that’s exactly what Golf Story is. In it, you’ll discover the story of a golfer who’s been forced to give up everything in order to accomplish his golfing dreams. Along the way you’ll encounter numerous obstacles getting in his way – and it’s up to you to overcome them.
Aside from the story and RPG elements, the simple golfing in Golf Story is excellent, too. Its wonderful 2D pixelated graphics make this feel like a SNES classic, and its simple golfing mechanics are easy to get to grips with. Sending your ball flying up the fairway has never been so satisfying. It might be far from your traditional golf game, but it’s still one of the best on Nintendo Switch by far.

7. ACA NEOGEO NEO Turf Masters
Prefer your videogames a little more… classic? Neo Turf Masters originally released in 1996, but as part of Hamster Corporation’s resurgence of Neo Geo games, it’s now available on Nintendo Switch. Despite its age, its 2D visuals are pretty charming, and it’s packed with colour and personality. There are six golfers to choose between, and whoever you choose will accompany you on a golfing tour around the world.
There are difficulty settings so you can adjust the game to suit you (we won’t judge if you prefer an easy win), and, like any golf game on Switch should have, Neo Turf Masters has multiplayer options. You can either battle it out with players around the world for a high score, or get a friend to join you locally for a two-played battle. It might not look quite as realistic as some of its more modern counterparts, but Neo Turf Masters has a whole lot of charm all the same.
8. Infinite Minigolf
For those who prefer their golfing games much less serious, Infinite Minigolf is for you. A series of minigolf (or crazy golf, depending where you live) courses, it’s all about making precise putts and having a lot of fun in the process.
Infinite Minigolf contains a number of themed courses. There’s a spooky Halloween set, and my personal favourite, a giant-sized bedroom. What makes it stand out, though, is that like the title suggests, it pretty much is infinite. The game lets you create your own courses using the assets provided, and you can download other people’s creations too. There are thousands of them, and it means you never need to play the same hole twice.
It can be played alone, but Infinite Minigolf is at its best when you’re competing against friends. With full local multiplayer support, you’ll score points for putting your ball in the fewest shots as well as hitting various collectibles that are dotted around every course. It’s not the most serious golf game on Switch, but it sure is a lot of fun.
Read our review of Infinite Minigolf
9. Super Inefficient Golf
Golf! With explosions! That’s pretty much the elevator pitch for Super Inefficient Golf , and honestly, what else do you need to know? It’s not exactly a realistic golf sim, but it is one of the most fun golf games out there, and is great fun to play with friends.
Super Inefficient Golf is rather like minigolf, but instead of having a putter to move your ball down the course, you use a series of explosions. Yep, placing explosive rockets directly on your ball will move it towards the hole. It’s as crazy as it sounds – and all the better for it. It opens up a lot of creativity too; exactly how you get the ball to the hole is entirely up to you, and each level lets you experiment with the most efficient ways of achieving your goal. It might leave the clubs behind, but Super Inefficient Golf is still one of the best golf games on Switch.
Read our review of Super Inefficient Golf
10. Golf Peaks
The next PGA Tour this is not, but Golf Peaks is a delightful little puzzle game about putting a ball around a myriad of obstacle courses. Starting simple, Golf Peaks’ levels quickly get more complicated, throwing in different kinds of challenges and really making you use that thinking cap of yours.
We’re cheating a little by putting Golf Peaks on this list; it’s a golf game in name only. But it’s fun, so we’re arguing it’s worthy of a place. It places a ball on a grid made up of squares, and equipped with a number of particular moves, your goal is to get the ball into the hole. With 108 levels to complete, Golf Peaks works your brain more than your backswing, but it’s enjoyable while it lasts.

Microsoft added Diablo 4 to Game Pass in March and these are the latest titles you can play on the service.
Lego 2K Drive (cloud and console)
If racing sims like Forza Horizon 5 is too serious for you -- or in my case, too difficult -- maybe try this brick-tastic game. In this open-world racing game, you can build your dream ride and race against a cast of kooky rivals with names like Clutch Racington. If you drive into a lake, no worries. Your car can turn into a boat because of Lego.
Lil Gator Game
Take a bite out of a cute little quest as a young gator in this adorable game. You play as the titular character as you climb, swim and explore the world around you while making friends with all the other critters and characters you run into along the way.

Not everyone can tee off at historic courses like Augusta National and St. Andrews, but you can with this golf game. You can play against PGA and LPGA pros, like Scottie Scheffler and Lexi Thompson, as you climb the ladder to become a Masters Tournament champion.
Kona (cloud and console)
Kona is returning to Game Pass about three years after it left the service. In this title, you play a private investigator in the 1970s who arrives at a small Canadian village to find it abandoned. You have to explore the village, investigate the supernatural and survive the northern winds. This game will surely send a chill down your spine.
Botany Manor
Calling all plant enthusiasts: If you've ever gotten into an argument over whether a snake plant is part of the Sansevieria or Dracaena genus, this game is for you. In this puzzle game, you play as a botanist in the 1890s completing your botanical research book, and you research and grow rare plant specimens from seed in an idyllic English manor. Don't be afraid to stop and smell the roses while you play.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider Definitive Edition
This is the final chapter in the story of how Lara Croft took up the mantle of Tomb Raider. You take the role of Croft as she travels to South America to uncover an artifact that could save the world. With the Definitive Edition, you get all seven DLC challenge tombs and more ways to tackle each challenge with additional downloadable weapons, outfits and skills.
Harold Halibut
This Day 1 release is a narrative game focused on friendship. You play the character Harold as he explores a retro-futuristic world under an alien ocean. Harold's world is full of weird, wonderful and diverse people and fish, each with a unique story. While exploring Harold's claymation world, you learn more about its inhabitants as you try to find the meaning of "home."

Moscow Country Club Becomes Latest European Tour Destination
(left-to-right) Scott McLean, European Tour Greenkeeping Consultant, Andrei Dukhovny, Director of Moscow Country Club, David MacLaren, Head of European Tour Properties, Mary Bazhenova, Golf Membership Manager of Moscow Country Club and Konstantin Gribkov, Golf Director of Moscow Country Club.
European Tour Properties has extended its portfolio of Destinations by welcoming Moscow Country Club as the 28 th venue within its extensive network of world-class venues.
Situated only an hour outside of Moscow, the club features Russia’s first 18-hole championship course and will host the Staysure Tour’s VTB Russian Open Golf Championship (Senior) from August 17-19, 2018.
The Country Club combines five-star hospitality with top-quality golf in a tranquil setting close to the Russian capital, and this new partnership extends the network to 28 venues within 21 countries, across three continents.
The course itself was designed by renowned architect Robert Trent Jones II and is nestled within dense Russian forest of thick firs and birches, offering a fascinating landscape for any golfer.
In addition to golf, Moscow Country Club features a five-star hotel, cottages and townhouses to rent throughout the year, and a choice of eight restaurants for guests to enjoy.
With an indoor and outdoor pool, state-of-the-art gym, tennis courts and other leisure activities, the extensive facilities at Moscow Country Club make the venue a strong addition to European Tour Properties’ network.
David MacLaren, Head of European Tour Properties, said: “We are absolutely delighted to welcome Moscow Country Club as the 28th member of our network of world-class venues and particularly pleased to welcome our first Destination in Russia.
“Moscow Country Club is both a fine golf resort and an established tournament venue. Our other Venues are sure to welcome the further expansion of our network within key geographical locations worldwide.
“In August, Moscow Country Club will host the VTB Russian Open Golf Championship on the Staysure Tour and we look forward to golfers from all over the world visiting our newest Destination.”
Andrei Dukhovny, Director of the GlavUPDK affiliated Moscow Country Club, said: “We are very excited to be part of the European Tour Properties network. We are looking forward to working with their team and using their expertise to enhance our customers’ experience both on and off the course.
“Moscow Country Club is a stand-out Russian golfing destination, with the Staysure Tour set to visit in August for the VTB Russian Open Golf Championship.
“By becoming a European Tour Destination, we are hoping to grow even further and continue developing as a venue.”
