‘shotlink in a suitcase': what players were wearing on their belts at hero.

  • Associated Press

Just how far was Tiger Woods hitting his driver in the Bahamas? How many putts was Scottie Scheffler holing from outside 12 feet? Those details from the Hero World Challenge might not have been available until this year.

Those tiny clips all but a few players wore on the back of their belts at Albany is what the PGA Tour refers to as “ShotLink bugs,” enabling the Tour to gather most data it typically gets at domestic PGA Tour events.

It’s part of a massive upgrade in the tour’s scoring and data collection which has reshaped the game from a statistical standpoint, providing more data for the media, invaluable statistical analysis for players and more information for fans.

The Tour has been testing them on the Korn Ferry Tour for the last 18 months.

Ken Lovell, the Tour’s senior vice president of golf technologies, said the devices players wore were accompanied by employees carrying a carbon fiber pole with GPS that can localize data within seconds.

ShotLink is now handled remotely out of PGA Tour headquarters.

“We built them for events like this,” Lovell said.

It’s a big step toward making sure the ShotLink data — distances, tendencies in shot dispersion, ball speed, shape, everything imaginable — is available at all PGA Tour events, even those outside the U.S. And eventually, it will be available at tournaments that have multiple courses, such as Torrey Pines or Pebble Beach.

Another code name for the ShotLink bugs is “ShotLink in a suitcase.”

“We cannot ship that much equipment into the Bahamas,” Lovell said, citing costs and other logistics.

It’s a work in progress to make sure the data is accurate to an inch, not a foot. But it’s part of a larger upgrade for the PGA Tour in which the number of 4K cameras used to track shots will increase at Tour events.

“A total rebuild,” Lovell said.

The full ShotLink system will be in Hawaii next month for the first time. Lovell also said ShotLink would be provided at the U.S. Women’s Open for the second straight year.

Company Founders, Tom Hunsucker, and Eddie and Francis Rowland started Nexbelt in 2010 with a vision to reinvent the way Americans buy, sell and wear their belts. Tired of the old outdated pin/buckle system, they set their sights on creating a belt that would be both adjustable and highly fashionable at the same time. Out of this passion, Nexbelt, “The Belt With No Holes” was born.

High-Tech Golf Belt Accessories Unveiled at Hero World Challenge

The devices attached to the back of players' belts at the Hero World Challenge are GPS trackers and part of the PGA Tour's efforts to expand and improve its ShotLink system.

The portable tracking devices could solve the challenges of using cumbersome and expensive technology at all events and allow the PGA Tour to collect and disseminate players' scoring and statistical data in real-time.

The use of GPS trackers as part of the ShotLink system could potentially improve data collection and accessibility in golf tournaments, making it more widely available and enhancing the experience for fans, bettors, and stats nerds.

  • The GPS trackers attached to players' belts provide real-time data on their location every three seconds and can calculate yardages once the players hit their shots.
  • The ShotLink system is currently powered by a small army of volunteers who gather data from sensors, but the use of GPS trackers could reduce the reliance on manpower.
  • The PGA Tour will undergo more testing before implementing the technology in tournament rounds.

The introduction of GPS trackers as part of the ShotLink system has the potential to revolutionize data collection and dissemination in professional golf, providing real-time statistics and improving the overall experience for fans and stakeholders.

Four players share the 18-hole lead after the first round of the Diners Club Peru Open at Los Inkas Golf Club. Chris Korte, Rodolfo Cazaubon, Julián Etulain and Evan Brown carded 6-under 66 and hold a one-stroke lead over nine players at 5-under 67.

This is the first time that Korte, Etulain and Brown have held a share of the lead after 18 holes this season. Cazaubon is making his first start on PGA TOUR Americas.

A native of Littleton, Colorado, Korte has made the cut in all three PGA TOUR Americas events to start the season. Korte registered his best finish at the Totalplay Championship at Atlas Country Club, where he finished T26. Korte earned exempt membership through the Latin Swing after finishing 11th in the Fortinet Cup season-long standings in 2023 after finishing in the top 25 four times, including a pair of T2 finishes at the Beachlands Victoria Open presented by Times Colonist and the Elk Ridge Saskatchewan Open.

After a lucrative collegiate career at the University of North Texas, Cazaubon gained membership on PGA TOUR Latinoamerica in 2014. Cazaubon won three times in 2015 on his way to winning the Order of Merit. The Tampico, Mexico native gained membership through the Latin Swing after finishing in the top 60 on PGA TOUR Latinoamerica in 2023.

Brown turned professional after a collegiate career that saw him star at Loyola University Maryland and Ole Miss. In addition to making six birdies, Brown capitalized and made eagle on Nos. 14 and 16 to secure his best round of the season thus far.

A two-time winner of the Diners Club Peru Open on PGA TOUR Latinoamerica (2013, 2014), Etulain has made the cut in seven of his last eight starts dating back to last season on PGA TOUR Latinoamerica. The Buenos Aires native has registered four top-10s in that span.

All players finished the first round with the final group finishing at 6:01 p.m. CT. Second-round play will start at 7:45 a.m. CT off the No. 1 and 10 tees.

Tiger Woods’ son, Charlie, falls short of U.S. Open qualifying and he’s not alone

Charlie Woods, only 15-years-old, did not have his best stuff in the first stage of U.S. Open qualifying.

Cognizant Classic, Charlie Woods

Perhaps nothing in golf is more difficult than trying to qualify for the U.S. Open .

The United States Golf Association (USGA) accepted over 10,000 entries into this year’s qualifiers, all of which are professional players or amateurs who carry a handicap index of 0.4 or better.

That includes Charlie Woods, son of Tiger Woods , who tried to qualify for his first major championship on Thursday at one of the 109 local qualifying sites in Port St. Lucie, Florida. The younger Woods, who helped his high school team win the Florida State Championship this past fall, has the game to compete and play. He has demonstrated that at the PNC Championship , too.

Unfortunately for the high school freshman, he did not have his best stuff on Thursday and will not advance past the first local qualifying stage. Woods carded a 9-over 81 at The Legacy Golf & Tennis Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida, making three double-bogies that helped seal his fate. He finished in a tie for 61st in a field of 89 players.

Tiger Woods, Masters Tournament

Only five players advance from Port St. Lucie to one of the final 10 qualifying sites in late May and early June.

Last year, the USGA staged 10 final qualifiers that featured 645 players competing across the country. Only 45 made it to the Los Angeles Country Club —or 6.9% of those who made it to the final stage—and many compete on the PGA Tour or LIV Golf .

Woods faced a tall task of trying to make it to the U.S. Open, but he most certainly gained valuable experience Thursday.

At the very least, he bested Cameron Kuchar, son of Matt Kuchar, by a stroke on Thursday at The Legacy Golf & Tennis Club. The younger Woods now holds some bragging rights over the younger Kuchar.

All jokes aside, these two young up-and-comers will more than likely run it back in 2025. By then, they will have more experience under their belts and fewer butterflies in their stomachs. But who knows? Perhaps they will defy the odds and make it all the way to Oakmont, which will host a record 10th U.S. Open next year.

Nelly Korda Wins Fifth Consecutive Title at The Chevron Championship

Nelly Korda

THE WOODLANDS, Texas — Nelly Korda collected her fifth straight LPGA Tour victory on Sunday at The Chevron Championship at The Club at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands, Texas in dominant fashion, winning by two shots over Maja Stark.

Korda finished the last seven holes of her third round on Sunday morning, parring in to post a 3-under 69 and sit in a tie for second alongside Brooke Henderson, one shot back of 54-hole leader Haeran Ryu.

Starting her final round just a couple of hours later, Korda parred the first two holes while her groupmates faltered, picking up a pair of back-to-back birdies on holes three and four to lead by two shots over 2024 LPGA Tour rookie Jin Hee Im at 12-under. The 25-year-old grabbed another birdie on the par-5 8th hole to get to 13-under overall, parring the ninth hole to turn in 33 with a three-shot advantage.

Korda made another birdie on the par-4 10th hole to move to 14-under overall before making her first bogey of the round on 11 to drop back to 13-under, the first shot Korda had given back to the field since she bogeyed the 7th hole on Friday.

Meanwhile, Lauren Coughlin was charging up the leaderboard, making birdies on holes 10 and 11 ahead of Korda to get within two shots of the lead. But she gave Korda a little breathing room after making bogeys on 16 and 17, and with just a handful of holes to play, Korda held a four-shot lead.

But the 12-time LPGA Tour winner stumbled again with a bogey on the par-5 15th hole, and after Coughlin made a bounce-back birdie on the par-5 18th hole to post at 10-under total, Korda held a two-shot lead with three holes to play at The Club at Carlton Woods.

After parring the 16th hole, Korda nearly dunked her tee shot on the par-3 17th hole for an ace, ultimately two-putting for par to lead by two shots with just 18 standing between her and the Dinah Shore Trophy.

But Stark wasn’t going to go quietly. After sitting at 9-under and pretty much out of the conversation for majority of the back nine, the Swede birdied the 17th hole and nearly pitched in for eagle on the par-5 18th hole, tapping in for birdie to post at 11-under, now just one shot back of Korda with one hole to play.

Korda wasn’t fazed though, piping her drive down the middle of the fairway and then putting her second shot on the back fringe, sitting within 30 feet of the hole for eagle. She ran her eagle try by just a couple of feet, handily making the nervy come backer for birdie to win her second major title and first since the 2021 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship with a four-day total of 13-under.

“It's just been a crazy, crazy, crazy couple of weeks, with some really solid golf. I can finally breathe,” said a shivering Korda in her winning press conference, still damp from her leap into the lake by 18. “I was really nervous on that back nine. I really, really wanted this win. It feels amazing to get it.

“My first-ever major, competing in a major, was at the U.S. Women's Open at Sebonack, and that was when I dreamt of winning major championships. To have two under my belt now is a dream come true.”

With her 13th career victory, Korda is now the 31st different American to earn 13 or more wins on the LPGA Tour and is the 52nd player ever to win two or more major titles, becoming the ninth player in LPGA Tour history to win at least both the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship and The Chevron Championship.

She joins Nancy Lopez and Annika Sorenstam as the only other player since 1978 to win five consecutive titles and will have a chance to top that pair next week as Korda is currently scheduled to play in the JM Eagle LA Championship presented by Plastpro.

But that’s a tomorrow Nelly concern. For now, she’s just going to soak in this moment, one for which she’s waited quite some time, and finally take a deep breath as her history is finally made.

“I'm going to enjoy this right now, and then I'll think about that,” smiled Korda. “It's been an amazing time. Hopefully, I’ll keep the streak alive. But I've been so grateful to compete week in and week out and get the five in a row.”

Here’s why an underwear company partnered with pga tour caddies.

In a unique partnership within the world of professional golf, the underwear brand SAXX has teamed ... [+] with a group of caddies instead of players.

While professional golfers get the headlines and notoriety, it’s caddies that help with the dirty work behind the scenes and often out of the public eye. So perhaps it’s only fitting a men’s underwear brand, SAXX, chose to pursue a partnership with five PGA Tour caddies.

Two of the caddies – Geno Bonnalie, who works with Joel Dahmen, and John Elllis, who is teamed with reigning U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark – have had greater visibility recently through their appearances on the Netflix Netflix docuseries about professional golf, Full Swing. The others to sign the group endorsement deal with SAXX, which first ventured into golf sponsorship a year ago, are Aaron Flener (J.T. Poston), John Limanti (Keith Mitchell) and Joel Stock (Will Zalatoris).

SAXX has been around since 2006 and, with its patented BallPark Pouch, lays claim to being the first pouch underwear brand in the market. When the brand looked at getting involved in golf from a promotional perspective, Vice President of Brand Marketing Shawna Olsten said SAXX gravitated toward pro caddies because they’re often overlooked on the course and could be featured in a fun, authentic way.

Perhaps not suprisingly, as part of the Ball Masters campaign there is plenty of publicity and marketing language tied in to one of the main caddie responsibilities: taking care of their player’s golf balls. And that, of course, plays into the primary responsibility of SAXX’s underwear.

While specific terms of the deal weren’t disclosed, the group of five pro caddies will receive more than $100,000 in total and wear not only the company’s underwear on the course, but its new chino-style shorts and cooling polo shirts.

The group of five PGA Tour caddies who teamed with SAXX will wear the brand's underwear, as well as ... [+] shorts and polo shirts, on the course during tournaments this year.

In addition, SAXX will hold a fan activation at an upcoming PGA Tour event, the Travelers Championship in Connecticut, and said it will donate $100 to the Testicular Cancer Foundation for every birdie made by the caddies’ players for the rest of the season. The company is also on a search to find golf fans to become honorary “Ball Masters,” with winning applicants getting free underwear for a year.

As part of its continued reach into the golf space, SAXX is targeting resort and hotel as one of its fastest emerging wholesale channels and has secured product placements at properties such as JW Marriott, Ritz Carlton and Fairmont that have well-known golf destinations. But uniquely teaming with caddies instead of players is proving to be the brand’s most high profile venture in expanding its visibility in the golf world.
