Gir National Park - A Complete Travel Guide

  • January 15, 2021
  • Updated on March 19, 2023

Gir National Park & Wildlife Sanctuary, one of India’s oldest and most visited wildlife sanctuaries, is the last remaining abode of Asiatic lions. The national park, also known as Sasan Gir, is about 37 miles southeast of Junagadh, a district in Gujarat. The Sasan Gir village serves as the official entrance to the sprawling Gir forest. The park has a total area of 1412 square kilometers, of which 258 square kilometers are the core of the national park and the remaining 1153 square kilometers are the wildlife sanctuary.

Indiscriminate hunting expeditions by Indian rulers and British colonists resulted in a drastic decrease in the population of Asiatic lions in the nineteenth century. At the start of the 20th century, only a dozen lions were left in the Gir forest. Junagadh’s rulers, aided by Britishers, then took the initiative to protect the endangered species. In 1969, the Indian government came forward to safeguard the endangered species and declared the area a sanctuary. Subsequently, in 1980, it was recognized as a national park.

How to reach Gir National Park?

By Air – There is no direct flight to Gir. The nearest airport is in Diu, which is 92 kilometers (2 hours drive) from the reserve region. Rajkot, the next closest airport, is approximately 160 kilometers (3.5 hours’ drive) from Gir. Rajkot has direct flights from both Delhi and Mumbai. Diu is not well-connected.

By Rail – Regular trains run from Ahmedabad and Rajkot to Junagadh (65 kilometers from Gir) and Veraval (45 km from Gir). After arriving in Junagadh/Veraval, take a taxi or bus to Sasan Gir. Trains (meter-gauge line) run daily from Junagadh and Veraval to Sasan Gir station, but their timetables may conflict with your jungle safari schedule.

By Road – As previously stated, Gir National Park is 60 kilometers from Junagadh and 360 kilometers from Ahmedabad. From most locations in Gujarat, you can take a bus or a taxi to get to the Sasan Gir region. There are several private and government-owned vehicles that can drop you at the closest access point to the sanctuary. Use Google Maps to find the exact location of Sinh Sadan’s entrance.

What is the best time to visit Gir National Park?

It can get very hot in April and May, but this is the best time for sighting the Asiatic lions. Artificial bodies of water are created throughout the forests to provide animals with easy access to drinking water. This makes it easier for visitors to spot the elusive mammals, but the heat (which can reach 45°) can be oppressive. It is best to visit Gir National Park between November and March when the weather is cool and pleasant. It gets very cold at night in late December and early January . Due to the monsoon season, the park is closed from mid-June to mid-October every year.

Wildlife in Gir National Park?

The Asiatic lion is the main draw of the Gir National Park as it’s the only place in the world where they can be found. In addition to these beautiful creatures, visitors to the Sasan Gir can see 2375 different types of fauna. The most spectacular and popular species include Indian leopards (over 300), striped hyenas, crocodiles, cobras, reindeer, sambar, jackal, fox, vultures, Indian Mongoose, wild boar, porcupines, Monitor lizards, jungle cats, eagle, owl, and many more rare species. Overall, wildlife enthusiasts will have a memorable experience in the densely forested hills, plateaus, and valleys of the Gir Forest

How to plan for Jungle Safari in Gir National Park?

To visit the forest, you must book your Jungle safari well in advance. Permits are only available online and can be reserved at girlion.gujarat.gov.in. To book a safari, you must have your identification details. If you are an Indian citizen, the permit will cost you between Rs.800 and Rs.1000 for up to 6 people. For foreigners, the entry fee for a group of six is between Rs.5600 and Rs.7000. Aside from that, guide and open SUVs are available on the spot for a fee ranging from Rs.2100-Rs.2400. Once you have obtained a permit, you must arrive at the starting point half an hour before the safari for verification. They will check the ID of the member who made the online reservation and issue you the safari permits. Private vehicles are not permitted in the jungle, and each jeep can carry a maximum of six people. In short, a Gir Jungle Trail would be expensive.

The jungle has 13 routes that intersect at various points. The forest authority assigns you a route and requires you to stick to it. The earlier you go, the more likely it is that you will get a better route. Approximate timings of Jeep Safari – The forest is open from Monday to Sunday. The duration of the safari is three hours. There may be slight variations in safari timings depending on the season. Winter Morning :  6:30 am to 9:30 am & 9:30 am to 12:30 pm Winter Evening:   3 pm to 6 pm Summer Morning :  6 am to 9 am & 9 am to 12 am Summer Evening:   4 pm to 7 pm

What are the chances of spotting the Asiatic lion in Gir National Park?

According to local guides, you will spot a lion 80% of the time. However, the type of sighting will vary depending on the route, time of day, and season. Early morning safaris are best because lions are most active at that time. They are usually sleeping in the bushes during the day and can only be seen from a distance. The second option should be an evening safari, and the last option should be an 8:30 a.m. safari. If you visit the park between March and May, you have a good chance of seeing the lion. The giant beasts are out looking for water, and this is your chance to spot them. During the summer, there is a good chance of glimpsing lions with cubs.

Lions are frequently tracked with the assistance of a rescue team. They would find out the lions’ exact location and spread the word. You would soon see the jeeps clustering near the lion’s whereabouts. Unlike African lions , Asiatic lions do not live in large groups, so you are more likely to see 1-2 lions together rather than a pride as seen in African jungles.

If you are unable to obtain a permit or see a lion during a jungle safari, you have another option. Visit Devalia Safari Park, a fenced-in area of the sanctuary where rescued animals are housed. The sightings are guaranteed, but the atmosphere is more akin to a zoo. There is no need to book ahead of time, and you are taken around on a bus.

Tourist Attractions in Sasan Gir?

In case you are staying in Sasan Gir for a couple of days and have some time between safaris, you can visit the local attractions like Kamleshwar Dam, Crocodile Breeding Farm, Tulsi Shyam Temple, and Zamzir Waterfall

Nearby Attractions?

If you have come this far and can afford to linger, it makes sense to visit nearby attractions.

  • Somnath – It is believed to be the first of the 12 jyotirlingas of Shiva. It is a very important pilgrimage and tourist destination in India. Bhalka Tirth, Triveni Tirth, Prabhas Patar Museum, and Somnath Mahadev Temple are worth visiting in Somnath. Somnath is around 70kms away from Sasan Gir
  • Girnar – Situated 60 km from Sasan Gir, Girnar is one of the most ancient and sacred pilgrimages for the Jain community. Not only did Jain Tirthankara Neminath attain Nirvana at Girnar, but Hindu Lord Dattatreya also performed penance on the top of the hill. Due to its religious significance, several Jain and Hindu temples are built on the ridges and summit of the 3660-foot-long hill. Previously, you had to climb 9,999 steps to reach the final summit, but now a ropeway has been started which drops you at Ma Ambaji temple which is located midway at 5000 steps.
  • Diu Island – A popular beach destination, Diu is located 95 km from Gir. The island is popular for Diu fort, Naida Caves, St. Paul’s Church, Diu Museums, Panikota Fort, and multiple beaches.

Accommodation at Sasan Gir?

If you are looking for a luxury stay, you have three options. Woods at Sasan, The Gateway Hotel Gir Forest by Taj, and The Fern Gir Forest Resort. Woods at Sasan is the most expensive but has rave reviews. It is a contemporary new hotel with manicured gardens and many activities to entertain you. Taj hotel has the advantage of being located on the edge of the Gir forest and comes with the famed Taj hospitality . Looking for budget accommodations? Check out Asiatic Lion Lodge, Gir Pride Resort, Hiran Holidays, and Carina Retreat.

Few Useful Tips for Gir National Park:

  • If you’re going to the park in the winter, bring plenty of warm clothes. You will need gloves, caps, scarves, and jackets for the early morning safari. Wear layers that can be removed as the temperature rises during the day. Scarves and hats should be worn to protect your face and head from dust.
  • The driver will stop the jeep once during the safari so that you can use the restrooms. They have built portable washrooms in strategic locations for the convenience of visitors
  • Carry your ID proofs with you, as they are checked at the safari gate
  • Wear clothes in browns, greens, and other neutral shades that blend with the surrounding jungle.
  • You must pay Rs.200 to carry a professional camera inside the jungle. For foreign nationals, the charges are $20
  • Plastic bottles, plastic packets, etc. are not allowed in the park. You will get thirsty during the safari, so carry water in steel bottles.
  • It can get bumpy during the long drive and your mobile, sunglasses, and wallets may fall off the vehicle. So, plan accordingly.
  • Sunscreen, binoculars, comfortable walking shoes, extra clothing, cameras, etc. should be added to your packing list .
  • Liquor is prohibited in the state of Gujarat and smoking is banned inside the park.
  • Do not irritate or disturb the animals.
  • Hiking, camping, and picnicking are not allowed within the park.
  • You will find a few restaurants in the region, but all of them would be serving Gujarati or Indian cuisine.

How to plan Gir National Park Trip

places to visit in junagadh sasan gir

Imagine Asiatic lions walking by you when you think of Gir National Park, Gujarat , India . Outside of Africa, these sub-species of African lions are now restricted only to Gir in their natural habitat. In this post, I will share everything you need to know on how to plan a Gir National Park trip.

Before booking our flight tickets from Delhi to Gujarat , we decided to get safari bookings first. Researching all about a place is one of the first things I do when planning a trip . But to my surprise, I couldn’t find a well-written blog on Gir Safari with all the details. Hence, here is my post on the details about how to plan the Gir National Park trip. Keep reading to know more.

Gir National Park aka Sasan Gir

Gir National Park closely located near Junagadh & Somnath, is the only place in Asia where lions live freely in the wild. Due to excessive hunting in 1965 Nawab of Junagadh banned hunting in the area and declared it a protected area. As per the 2020 census, there are 670+ Asiatic lions now. Other than 40 species of reptiles & 200 species of birds, there are also a few leopards in the area. If you’ve got luck on your side, you could spot cobras here too.

December to March is the best time to visit Gir National Park

Don’t miss my Gujarat itinerary!

How to plan gir national park trip – book safari tickets.

Open jeep safari is the only way to experience the wildlife in Gir national park. The park is closed in monsoon weather & winters generally bring a swarm of tourists with it. If visiting in winter & from outside of Gujarat, it is best to book your Gipsy tickets ~2 months in advance, so that you don’t go that far and still not do a safari. Remember, on-the-spot tickets are not available, so plan accordingly.

Is Private Safari a thing??

On my last trip to Gir national park, I didn’t plan ahead and found only when we reached that we cannot do the safari now. It was upsetting. A private vendor approached us and was convinced that there was an alternative route. This is not a dedicated route but is a part of the jungle. We took the bait in the hope to catch a glimpse of the wildlife. Needless to say, it was not only disappointing but also a rip-off. So, don’t fall prey to them .

Permit & safari tickets can easily be booked online. There are numerous private vendors which dominate top Google searches. However, guides from the park recommend booking via the official government site . Below are the details –

  • The government site provides the permit required for safari for 800₹ (Mon-Fri) and 1000₹ (Sat-Sun). Foreigner prices are 5600₹ & 7000₹ respectively. This does not include the guide’s charges of 400₹ and gipsy charges of 2000₹. These should be paid separately on the spot. It is challenging to get your safari booked this way, hence we opted for a private tour.
  • The private tour operators offer a safari for 4700₹ (Mon-Fri) and 1000₹ (Sat-Sun). Foreigner prices are 13800₹ & 7000₹ respectively. Booking tickets through them, there’s no additional hassle for us, leaving us with peace of mind. We just have to show up on the day of the safari.

What is the best time for Safari?

There are a total of 3 safaris that happen in a single day – 6:30-9:30 AM, 9:30 AM – 12:30 PM and 3:30-6:30 PM. With 13 dedicated routes, the open jeep safari will take you inside the jungle with a driver & guide. In summer, the timings are a half hour early. Summers are not ideal for lion spotting as the dry & hot weather makes the animals hide in the shade. They rarely come out, so your chances of spotting them will be difficult.

There is no best route and no guarantee that you will be able to see lions on your safari. Still, the early morning & evening safari has the highest chances where you may spot the lions. When booking your safari tickets, it is best to keep these time slots in mind.

Since there was no guarantee that we will be able to see lions, we booked two safaris – one evening (3-6 PM) and another morning (6-9 AM). We were lucky enough to spot 3 adult lions on the morning safari. Out of the 3 of them, 2 had their nightly hunt & 1 of them passed by us, a few feet away from us.

What to do a day before your Safari?

You will receive a text message about your guide, keep it handy. The guide might call you a day ago, if not, you may call him to understand when to reach out & get directions.

What to do on Safari Day?

  • In winter, wear proper winter clothes, as it gets chilly inside the jungle. Wear jackets, warm caps etc.
  • Reach the entry gate 45 minutes before your safari time and call your guide.
  • Get in the queue at the reception as early as possible where you will be required to produce ID cards and will be assigned a jeep.
  • Follow the process at the reception and wait till the jeep starts coming in.
  • If you’d like to shop for souvenirs, there’s a store next to the reception where you can buy a variety of things.

How to plan Gir National Park Trip – How to reach Sasan Gir?

There are various airports close to Gir National Park. Keshod Airport is 38 km from Sasan Gir. Next is Diu airport which is approximately 60 km from Gir, a cab will take ~2 hours from here to Sasan Gir. If you’d like a third option, Rajkot airport is also close, almost 4 hours from Gir.

places to visit in junagadh sasan gir

  • As of Feb 2023, there are no flights from Delhi to Keshod Airport.
  • Delhi to Diu, flights are a tad expensive on one side, so if you’re on a budget, it should not be picked. However, taking a flight to Diu will give you the option to explore Diu for a few days.
  • There are no direct flights for Rajkot, most of them route via Ahmedabad and a few via Mumbai. This will take up your entire day, and the journey will be extremely long and add another 4+ hours drive to Sasan.
  • We took the longest route via Ahmedabad. We spent a day in Ahmedabad, met family & friends, and took a road trip to Gir the next day. It was almost an 8+ hour drive from Ahmedabad to Gir.

If you love wildlife photography I suggest taking a car camera with you – check out some of the best cameras .

2. by train.

Junagadh & Veraval are the closest train stations to reach Gir National Park. I’d recommend taking a train to Junagadh as you can explore the town too.

If you’d like to include a road trip in your Gujarat trip, you can take a flight to Ahmedabad (like we did). We hired a car from Zoomcar , picked it up from close to Ahmedabad airport & dropped it back. For 4 days, we had the rental car and drove to Gir National Park, Somnath, Diu etc.

Ahmedabad to Gir route

The drive from Ahmedabad to Sasan Gir is relatively smooth with the exception of a few stretches where construction is going on. The best route is via NH 47 and NH151 via Junagadh to Gir.

Gir National Park Trip – Where to stay in Gir ?

  • There are numerous resorts in Sasan Gir located quite close to the jungle. We chos e Daksh Resort And Amusement Park which was literally inside the jungle (not the jungle trails), but ~25 minutes outside Gir national park entry gate. What I loved most about the resort were its remote location, the delicious buffet they served and the fantastic staff.

(Not so) Funny Story –

On our post-dinner walk, we ventured outside the resort. With little light pollution, the sky looked mesmerizing and full of stars & constellations. We could even capture bleak glimpses of Andromeda galaxy . Within a few moments of our walk, we heard the roaring and immediately identified, it is either a lion or a leopard. After a few seconds, I was trembling with fear and it felt like the roars were coming closer.

Night sky in Gir national park

So, we finally ran back to the entry gate of the resort, and there the guard scolded us. He then told us there were recent cases where a leopard was spotted and he even attacked people. I calmed down when we were inside the resort, & continued our evening walk. A few minutes later, we heard the roaring again, from a bit far this time and for a while the resort didn’t feel safe. I spoke to guards later and they told us the resort have 2 level boundaries set and it is completely safe inside.

If you, too, would like such an adventurous experience, I’d recommend staying here, but it may not be ideal for the weak-hearted.

Book Daksh Resort And Amusement Park for your upcoming here.
  • Since there are limited resorts in the area, they might be fully occupied. In that case, you may choose to stay in Junagadh. It will take you to reach 1.5 hours from Junagadh to Gir and for your morning safari, you will have to start super early.
Book Click Hotel, Junagadh for your upcoming here.

Located in the far reaches of India, Sasan Gir can seem daunting to visit. Read this now for everything you need to know about getting the best for your experience.

Sasan Gir and the surrounding town of Junagadh are well worth the time and effort to get here. Here you will find India at its most spectacular and its most raw.

Gujarat travel

Gujarat is underrated and often missed entirely by most backpackers as they pass on their way to more popular states like Rajasthan or Maharashtra, which is a shame. Gujarat has an incredible natural, cultural and historical heritage.

I want to help my readers explore this underdog state and get the most out of their time. I want to discuss what it is like to travel to a little of this enchanting corner of the Indian subcontinent.

By writing this post, I hope to steer more of my readers to Gujarat, as this state is like no other. While it is an expensive state to move around in, I have found it to be well worth every rupee.

Its unique identity, customs, culture, food and wildlife will satisfy whatever you seek on your journey to this incredible country.

Bird, parrot, beautiful

Sasan   Gir  national park

Sasan   Gir national park is one of a kind, literally! The whole world’s population of Asiatic Lions live in this one national park, around 700.

As well as the stars of the show that people fly from around the world to see you can also find 38 mammals, 300 species of birds, 37 species of reptiles and more than 2,000 species of Insects.

All this incredible diversity is set in a low thorny acacia forest. The local Siddi people will further baffle your orientation as they are clearly of African descent. This fabulous place cannot possibly fail to Impress, and that’s why I am giving a detailed guide to India’s wild west.

Environmental issues in the national park

700 Lions doesn’t sound like a lot when you consider every last one living here. However, the truth is that it is way more than the park’s carrying capacity.

Crowding leads to conflict between the lions and the local people as they spread their range ever further. These animals will eat domestic livestock and have attacked people numerous times, so you can imagine their presence is controversial. Deforestation only encroaches on their habitat further and is definitely not helping the situation.

There are no plans yet to move some of these magnificent creatures to other national parks. I suspect that’s just greed to monopolise the whole world’s population, so if you want to see them, you must come here.

It is not cheap to visit, but I will do what I can to try and explain how to save a little money. The cost is why not many foreigners come this way, if I am honest.

Scoops owl, tree,

Asiatic lions

Asiatic Lions are slightly smaller than their African cousins due to the harsh conditions they endure. They have skin folds that run across their bellies and smaller manes. The real difference is how they live. They live in a matriarchal society, and the usually older female leads the pride.

An Asiatic lion pride are typically related and tends to be smaller than those found in Africa. Males only come to breed, and they compete for their mating grounds. If a competitor takes over another dominant Lions territory, they will kill any offspring to bring the lioness back into mating.

These are the Lions used in ancient Rome’s Colosseums and once roamed to Persia. Towards the end of the British Raj era, there were not more than 20 left on earth, so their story is one of optimism and hope for other species. It shows we can save populations of animals if we try.

David Attenborough has a fantastic documentary on Gujarat’s wildlife, and who doesn’t like him? Here is the link to that. Enjoy.😎

Lion, Sasan Gir, forest

Wildlife of Sasan Gir

Aside from the Lions, this national park has one of Asia’s most significant collections of carnivores. The 38 species of mammals include the Striped Hyena, Honey Badger, Indian Leopards, ruddy mongoose and some very rare animals such as the Rusty Spotted Jungle Cat.

The birdlife is both apparent and out of this world. There are so many species to feast your eyes on here. Some of my favourites are the Indian Pitta, Tickell’s Blue Flycatcher, Indian roller and any of the six species of vultures found inside the park. For a complete checklist, check out  this birders website.

Moving around the area independently is very hard as the government are highly overprotective of safety.

When the Safari starts, it is hard to stop and see anything as the jeeps want to show you lions before the other vehicles scare them off. The jeep drove so fast that I thought we might go back in time as we raced across the bumpy roads until we found our first lions.

Ironically, the lions didn’t care how many jeeps there were, so it all seemed unnecessary. You will be hard-pressed to find a guide who knows about the birdlife as they just want to show you the big hitters, so those walks are a treat.

Sasan Gir culture

You will notice a few settlements inside the park and these belong to the Maldhari people, who live a very ancient and uneasy lifestyle with the wildlife inside the park.

Sharing life with 700-odd lions roaming around must be challenging, but they do. Every night their villages are surrounded by a fence of thorns that keeps them safe. Although they lose many animals throughout the year and the locals themselves are attacked sporadically.

I wanted to stay in their villages, but it is costly, and you have to apply for permission in New Delhi. Approximately 450 families are living in this timeless tradition.

The African culture you see has been in India for centuries when an east African princess married the nawab of Junagadh. She bought many local people over to India to act as her bodyguards and lay the railroads. They made a home in villages fringed by the forests of Gir . To find out more, there is a short  documentary I highly recommend.

I have covered what you can expect, so now I will talk about how to get here, where to stay and how to save a little bit of money.

How much do safaris in Sasan Gir cost?

Now I have told you how wonderful it is, let us talk about the bad part. The cost of visiting this park is crazy, and there is no cheating as all bookings are made online.

That is the current information from the government website. Please don’t hurt yourself further by using an agent, as they will levy a charge on top.

You will need to do more than one Safari to maximise your chance of seeing the Lions. There is also a 200 rupee charge for a nonprofessional camera. Do a safari on a weekday to save a bit of money, and it is not so busy either.

Pro tip for Sasan Gir safaris

Do your safaris in the height of summer as there will be less greenery and you can see more wildlife. The heat is intense, so get the early morning or evening safaris when wildlife is more abundant. While costly, the park is dripping in biodiversity and worth the money for any animal enthusiast.

Accommodation in Sasan   Gir

There are many hotels around the national park. However, this post is aimed at those who want to save money. If money is no issue, then the hotel gateway is terrific!

Regarding places to stay on a budget, I found only two options. Those are Nitin Ratanghayara Family Rooms or Hotel Umang.

The rest are geared towards domestic tourists, which is considerably more expensive. The first gets good reviews, but my personal experience was when I got off the bus, I was greeted by very cocky young males who just presumed I was going to stay there and I was, in all fairness. But they were very rude, so I walked to the second.

Hotel Umang was just fine for a night’s rest. The staff was friendly enough, and the food was good. The staff organised walks around, and that maximised my experience in a big way. They want 500 rupees to walk you around the farmland and to a dam, but it is well worth it.

The cost of the comfortable rooms is negotiable. Since they appeal mainly to foreigners and given the cost of the park, it is safe just to walk in and bargain.

Resturants in Sasan Gir

Eating non-Indian food is hard here. There are some tasty Dhabas near the bus stop and they are reasonably priced. If you want coffee in the morning, I found Hotel Gateway makes a buffet breakfast that outsiders can pay for.

The hotel is fantastic, and it is not crazy expensive for the food. There is a beautiful garden you can sit and watch the wildlife, and the western breakfasts are excellent. The hotel is a short walk from the bus stop and down a dirt track signposted from the main road.

Transport to and from Sasan   Gir

Buses frequently run from Junagadh to  Sasan   Gir , and there is also a slow unreserved train that you can take at 5.58 pm. Taxis operate from the train station into town, but I’m not sure why, as it is less than ten a minute’s walk.

Also, the patch of scrubland at the back of the train station is a good place for spotting wildlife , but if you carry on to the road, you may be pulled over because the government is very protective of your safety. Some may say a little too much, in all fairness.

Junagadh, Gujarat, buildings

Junagadh is the gateway to  Sasan   Gir and most travellers whizz past it, which is a shame as this place has plenty of charm.

There are plenty of historical sights and it is the starting point for the sacred Hindu pilgrimage site to the impressive Girnar hill. In fact, the whole surrounding landscape is remarkable. With a complete lack of tourists, there is no hustle, which is refreshing. It leaves you to wander the streets and take in all the sights and sounds of the city in relative peace.

Historical sights in Junagadh

There are plenty of these, so budget a couple of days to look around this small yet exciting town. It may be a small town by Indian standards, but there is plenty to see. Let’s start with the most famous.

Uperkot fort

The area the fort now sits on was originally built in the era of Chandragupta in 319 bc. It has been built on throughout the ages since then.

There is now a charge to enter the fort: a humble 100 rupees for foreigners and 5 rupees for Indian nationals. The fort contains a mosque, step wells, a city gate and some Buddhist caves that are an additional cost.

These archaeological sights are not maintained at all and are woefully under-loved. It is still a pleasure to visit and well worth the time.

Junagadh, buildings, Vazirs Mausoleum

Vazirs Mausoleum

The Mausoleum is a rare example of Euro – Islamic architecture. Relatively unloved, it still stands majestically and looks like something from a fairytale.

The dome and the miners are Islamic, yet the sculptures and the pillars are distinctly gothic, giving this place a very unusual feel. Constructed in 1896, Despite years of neglect and pollution, the elegance of the building is awe-inspiring.

Mahabat Maqbara

Right next door, this elegant Mausoleum is yet another example of Euro, Islamic architecture. I have never seen anything like it before and it is well worth the walk. It was built by Nawab Mahabat Khan II of Junagadh (1851–82). Notice the delicately carved french windows in the picture above.

Trekking Girnar hill

Girnar is a group of mountains just outside of town and is an important pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Jains. Some temples and shrines date back as early as the 12th century. To walk alongside the pilgrims is a delight, and your memories of doing so will last a lifetime.

However, I must make it clear this is not an afternoon stroll. There are 10,000 steps to the summit, and you must start to walk at dawn to avoid the heat. Start when it is still dark, as it will take a full day up and down. The entrance to the start of the walk is 4km out of town. Expect to pay at least 100 rupees for a rickshaw.

Photography is allowed along the trail but not inside the temples. There is no cost for you to walk the route.

I feel obliged to warn you that it is no small undertaking and I would strongly recommend you have a reasonable fitness level to try it. It’s 10ooo steps up a mountain, after all.

Where to eat in Junagadh

There is one clear winner for me, and that’s Geeta lodge. It serves Vegetarian Gujarati food and allows you to sample some of the local flavours.

The food is perfectly cooked, and there is a lot of it! All are served by an army of waiters keen to ensure you have a pleasant experience. I strongly recommend it if you get dessert for a few extra rupees. This place is hugely popular with locals and it’s not hard to see why.

There are lots of dhabas around the train station that provide the usual meals and I’m guessing they will do just fine.

Accommodation in Junagadh

You have to be a little selective when choosing a place to get a night’s sleep here, as many of the cheaper hotels attract a very dubious clientele as they often double up as brothels. I stayed in Gautam Guest House on Kalwa Chowk; This is the best economical option in town.

I found it clean with friendly service, albeit a very basic place. They do not have a website, so I cannot provide a link. A Rickshaw from the train station or bus stand should never be more than 60 rupees.

Another more upmarket option is the lotus hotel on station road. It is a bright, clean hotel but will cost at least three times as much for a night’s sleep than the Gautam guest house.

Gautam guest house will set you back a few hundred rupees whereas the lotus hotel will cost at least 2000 rupees as it is popular with the well-heeled local pilgrims. But then again, Gujarat lacks its neighbouring states’ whole budget hotel scene. In all fairness, the hotel is sparkling clean and offers a high level of comfort in a safe environment.

Transport from Junagadh

The ST bus stand has frequent departures in all directions across the state. My advice is if you turn up late, stay in the more expensive hotels with 24-hour check-in to save you from having to wander around in the dark. I do not recommend you do that!

The bus service is punctual and efficient. But if you are looking for the comfort of long haul busses, a few companies offer their services around the train station. They will, of course, cost a little more but are much faster.

Junagadh rail station has a computerised booking office. An important note is that it is not a destination you can use the tourist quota for, so book in advance unless you want to travel in an unreserved class. There is only a limited number of trains that stop here.

A reliable train is the Jabalpur express ( number 11463/5.) It leaves at 11.10 am and stops at Rajkot and Ahmedabad seven and a half hours later. A second-class train is also going to Sasan   Gir and Diu, although this is a prolonged service. Train number 52952 leaves Junagadh at 7.15 am.

I think it is not hard to see what the benefits are to take the time and come and explore this beautiful place yourself. You will find it all here whether you are looking for culture, history or wildlife. What’s more, you will find it with virtually no other western tourists, so you can start to create your unique path in this underrated yet undeniably charming state.

I have tried to include as much information as possible to make it as pain-free as possible to visit. I hope you all found this helpful post and as usual, if you have any further questions or comments, just leave them in the section provided, and I will get back to you.

Gir is one of India’s oldest sanctuaries, and is synonymous with the majestic Asiatic lion (Panthera leo persica). The only place in India to see this animal, this park can take legitimate pride in saving an endangered species, which was at the threshold of extinction in the start of the twenty-first century, by providing it a more secured habitat. The Gir ecosystem falls in Biogeography Zone-4 (the semi arid) and Biogeography Province 4-B. Gujarat Rajwara is the last remaining abode of the Asiatic Lion, Panthera leo persica. The Government of Gujarat has declared an area of 1412.1 sq km as Protected Area (PA) which comprises 258.7 sq km as National Park and 1153.4 sq km as Sanctuary. Besides this 470.5 sq km of forest area forms a buffer Zone as reserve, protected and unclassified forest. Thus, a total area of 1882.6 sq km makes up the Gir forest.

Things to Do

Jeep safari tours, where to stay nearby, how to get there, tips for your visit, gir national park.

Gir National Park is located in the state of Gujarat in west-central India. Here, 545 square miles (1,412 square kilometers) of hilly, dry scrubland serves as a wildlife sanctuary for the Asiatic lion (the only place in the world where these creatures still exist). Once almost hunted to extinction and listed as critically endangered in the year 2000, Asiatic lion numbers have recovered well due to conservation efforts that date back to 1965. According to a recent census , the total population of lions residing in Gir National Park numbers 674.

Gir's specific ecosystem makes it a preferred habitat for other animals, as well, like jackals, leopards, antelope, and deer. The seasonal rivers and four human-made reservoirs here are home to crocodiles. These watering holes attract over 300 species of resident birds, as well. Droves of visitors flock to this park each year (even though it's considered an expensive trip) to attend a bucket list safari tour that puts them face-to-face with Asiatic lions in the wild.

Most people come to Gir National Park to see the park's two most prized predators: lions and leopards. They embark on jeep safari tours, complete with guides, that take them on one of the pre-determined safari routes in the park. A three-day safari, which includes lodging, delivers maximum opportunities for wildlife viewing, as this multi-day experience is timed perfectly.

You can also access the park with a private vehicle (for a fee), but certain restrictions apply, and you still must hire a guide. Or, you can also opt for a shorter, guided minibus tour that takes you through the park's Interpretation Zone, a fenced-off compound located off-site. This option allows you to view a cross-section of the park's of wildlife, including lions, within a 20- to 30-minute drive.

Avid birders flock to Gir to discover the area's 300 species of birds, including the critically endangered white-backed and long-billed vultures. A two-day birdwatching tour , guided by local experts, can accommodate as little as two people, as well as larger groups.

Lastly, mingle with the distinctively dressed Maldhari (a tribal herder community). Only approximately 1,000 native people still live on the grounds of Gir National Park, as the large predators consume about one-quarter of their livelihood of cattle and buffalo.

Unfortunately, hiking is not permitted in Gir National Park. There are no trails within the sanctuary due to the prevalence of lion and other predator encounters.

The Asiatic lion is a sure sighting on a jeep safari tour. Encounters with the Indian leopard, jungle cat, hyena, desert cat, honey badger, and mongoose are also prolific. Trained drivers and guides will take you on one of eight driving routes in the park where you may also see blackbucks, boar, chinkara, chital, and the rare four-horned antelope.

In order to hire a jeep (gypsy), you must first buy a permit for either Gir National Park (Gir Jungle Trail) or the Gir Interpretation Zone (in the neighboring Devalia Safari Park). Permits can be obtained in advance and must be presented at the reception center in the government-owned Sinh Sadan guesthouse (the safari entry point). Arrive around 30 to 45 minutes before your scheduled safari departs so that you have plenty of time to check-in and meet your guide and vehicle.

Upmarket hotels also conduct their own jeep safaris, albeit at a higher rate, and will take care of all the arrangements, including bookings and permits. This preferable option, particularly for foreigners, takes the guesswork out of the inevitable itinerary challenges that may come with a DIY adventure.

There are several lodging options both at the park's entrance and just outside the park's boundary. If you're looking to save money and don't mind staying farther away, choose from a few inexpensive hotels on the route to the Gir Interpretation Zone.

  • Sinh Sadan : Located at the entrance to the sanctuary sits Sinh Sadan, the park's most economical lodging option and the place where the local tourists stay. The guesthouse is nestled among lush gardens, and rooms offer a choice of air conditioning or not. Do note—this lodging option is a challenge to book, as reservations need to be made within one month of travel and can only be taken by phone or fax. Also, rates here are higher for foreigners.
  • The Gateway Hotel Gir Forest : This hotel offers a more luxurious stay right on the outskirts of the Gir Forest. Here, you can enjoy rooms and luxury suites—some with a view of the river or the garden—which include en-suite bathrooms, free Wi-Fi, and a spacious balcony. An on-site spa and fitness center helps you unwind after a long day of safari-touring, and the hotel's restaurant serves regional, home-style cuisine.
  • Woods at Sasan : Mindful travelers may want to consider a stay at the eco-conscious Woods at Sasan. This lodging option is ideal for safari-goers looking for a wellness experience, as it specializes in personalized Ayurvedic treatments and yoga. The carefully curated property offers stand-alone studios and villas with up to three bedrooms, situated in an 8-acre mango orchard on the fringe of the forest.
  • Maneland Jungle Lodge : Located about two miles from the park's entrance is the popular and inexpensive Maneland Jungle Lodge, which features a grand lodge and 17 jungle cottages. Choose from deluxe rooms or a deluxe villa, all with air conditioning, and enjoy locally sourced and homegrown organic delicacies at the hotel's restaurant.

Gir National Park is situated in the southwest part of Gujarat state, 360 kilometers from Ahmedabad, 65 kilometers from Junagadh, and 40 kilometers from Veraval. The entrance to the park is located at Sasan Gir Village and includes the park's reception and orientation center. The Gir Interpretation Zone is about 7 miles (12 kilometers) west of the village, at Devalia. And, the nearest major airport is in Ahmedabad, about seven hours away, with smaller airports in both Rajkot (three hours away) and Dui (two hours away).

The nearest train station in Junagadh offers the easiest way to access the park. Trains run directly from both from Ahmedabad and Rajkot, and then it's an hour-and-a-half drive to Sasan Gir. You can hire a taxi from the train station, or public buses run regularly to Sasan Gir.

Alternatively, you can book a private bus from Ahmedabad to Sasan Gir and have it drop you right next to the Sinh Sadan guesthouse and reception center. It's more convenient than the train, but the journey takes seven hours.

  • The most popular time to visit Gir National Park is December through March. However, it can get very crowded during these peak times, rendering long waits. Alternatively, come during the hot and dry season (from March through May), as animals are easily spotted during this time when they congregate near the water's edge.
  • Embark on a morning safari when the lions are the most active. Lions tend to sleep throughout the day and are harder to spot on a mid-day tour.
  • Gir National Park is open from mid-October until mid-June, with jeep tours starting at 6:30 a.m., 9 a.m., and 3 p.m. The Gir Interpretation Zone is open year-round, Thursday to Tuesday (closed Wednesday), 8 a.m. until 11 a.m., and 3 p.m. until dusk (around 5 p.m.).
  • Safari bookings can be made through the park up to three months in advance, and within 48 hours before a scheduled tour. Only 30 vehicles are allowed in the national park at a time, so permits for the Gir Jungle Trail are limited and can only be booked online.
  • The eight safari routes are randomly assigned by a computer (along with a driver and guide) when you present your permit. Vehicles must all move in one direction along the route, without reversing or diverting.
  • E-permits to Gir National Park are issued per vehicle, with up to six occupants. The cost varies, depending on the day of the week, with weekends and public holidays being the most expensive.
  • If you're planning a DIY experience, prepare to pay for a guide to accompany you inside the park, a jeep, and DSLR camera charge. (The camera fee for foreigners is unreasonably high. As a result, many find the experience to be disappointing and not worth the money.)

GIR NATIONAL PARK: HOW TO PLAN A PERFECT JUNGLE RETREAT

The Gir National Park is one of the many fascinating wildlife sanctuaries of Gujarat. It is renowned as the only home of the Asiatic Lions. In fact, Gir is only second to the African continent where you can see lions roaming free in the wild. Also, Gir has garnered attention for successfully saving Asiatic Lions from the brink of extinction. Besides lions, Gir is the habitat of several other species, particularly birds. Gir further escalates interest as two tribes live here: the Maldharis and the African – originated Siddis. How these fearless tribes live in harmony with the wildlife is indeed riveting.

So, here goes the tidbits you need to know for visiting Gir National Park.

Table of Contents

About Gir National Park:

Back in the colonial era, Sasan Gir served as the private hunting grounds for the Nawab of Junagadh. Large scale hunting, both by the Nawabs and the British, led to a steady decline in the numbers of lions. As a result, roughly a dozen lions were left surviving by the end of the 19th century. Both the British and the Nawab realized the gravity of the situation as also felt it necessary to start immediate conservation of lions. The first initiative to save the lions came from the very Nawabs of Junagadh, whose reckless hunting sprees previously led to such an alarming scenario.   In 1965, 1,153 sq. km of Gir was declared a Wildlife Sanctuary and the rest of 258 square km a National Park in order to protect the endangered species.

The Gir National Park is located in the Junagadh district of Gujarat. It is 44 km from Somnath, 76 km from Junagadh and around 80 km from Amreli.

This location is tucked away in the wilderness, and at night, you can easily hear the roar of lions congregating near the lake. At any given time, only 50 devotees are permitted to enter the temple, and no one is permitted to stay overnight in this restricted area. For nature lovers, the old temple is a lovely retreat. To have the best experience with your loved ones, visit this serene temple in the early morning hours. The temple is one of the most adorable places to visit in Gir for religious travellers and soul-seekers. It is the Gir forest shepherds' protector. A truly wild place where lions frequently roar and animals congregate near the lake. The surroundings are peaceful, and if you're lucky, you might see lions roaming freely in their natural habitat. Other animals and birds commonly seen in the area include deer and peacocks. The ride will be slow due to the rough and uneven forest road.

Devalia Safari Park

Devalia Safari Park

Devalia Safari Park, 12 kilometers from Sasan Gir National Park, is also known as the Gir Interpretation Zone and is another place where you can see lions. If you didn't see any lions in Gir, you won't be disappointed if you visit here because you will. Leopards can also be seen in close proximity to lions, but management has kept them separate to avoid lions killing the leopard. You might catch the leopards being fed by the staff around 5 p.m. if you're lucky. Unlike Gir, only caged gipsies are available. Other animals and birds can be seen in their natural environment. You must first obtain a permit from the tourist reception centre in order to visit Devalia Safari Park. Due to the limited number of permits issued per day, you must arrive at the reception centre early in the morning to take advantage of the service. A permit is also available online. This saves time and effort, especially during peak season; however, online permits are non-refundable.

Jamjir Waterfall

Jamjir Waterfall

Jamjir waterfall is situated in the neighborhood of a village named Jamwala, which is about at a distance of 23 km from Sasan Gir. It is a small waterfall but astonishingly beautiful. It remains active throughout the year and visitors enjoy bathing just a few steps upstream from the waterfall. The sound of water falling from a height on stones is just music to the ears. It looks stunning when the water flows, making its way through stones and small rocks. It’s a place where you can take a lot of selfies with your loved ones as a remembrance of your visit to this amazing place. If you forget your contraptions and bring only a pencil or pen and paper, it is an enticing spot near Sasan Gir and a paradise for imaginative individuals such as painters, essayists, and writers. Jamjir waterfalls are the largest in Gujarat and are located in the Saurashtra district, close to Kodinar. The sound and power of the water falling into a deep pool with extraordinary falls will undoubtedly make you say incredible. Jhamjir cascades is a Junagadh locale that is located 23 kilometers from the world famous Gir Wildlife Sanctuary and 37 kilometers from Kodinar.

Uperkot Fort

Uperkot Fort

Uperkot Fort, about 80 kilometers from Sasan Gir, is a Maurya Empire relic in Gujarat's Junagadh district. In 319 BC, Chandragupta Maurya built it. It is one of the most visited places in Gujarat and one of India's oldest forts. Visitors to Gir National Park frequently include this location on their itinerary. The admired Uperkot Fort will undoubtedly transport you back to its glorious ancient history. It has three massive gates and 20-metre-high walls. Other attractions at Uperkot Fort include the Tomb of Nuri Shah, two baolis (step wells), and several Buddhist caves. The fort is said to have withstood 16 sieges over a 1,000- year period due to its strategic location. These caverns feature exquisite pillars and carvings from the first and fourth centuries AD. Views of the city and Girnar Hill to the east of the Uparkot Fort are spectacular. Within its walls are a magnificent former mosque, a collection of centuries-old Buddhist caves, and two lovely step-wells.

Somnath Temple

Somnath Temple

Sasan Gir is 45 kilometers away from Somnath Temple. Somnath was known as the richest temple in the pre-Mughal era. The beauty and wealth of the temple drew a large number of foreign rulers and kings, who came to India and looted almost all of the gold not once, but twice. The beauty of the sea that surrounds the temple matches its elegance. Millions of Hindus visit for religious purposes and to spend time with their families. Cameras are not permitted on the premises, but there is a locker room near the entrance. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations, so go there the next time you're in Gir. The first temple in Somnath is said to have been built of gold by Somraj (the moon god), which was later rebuilt in silver by Ravana, wood by Krishna, and stone by Bhimdev. The current serene, symmetrical structure was built to traditional designs on the original coastal site: it's painted a creamy colour and features some fine sculpture. Its large, black Shiva lingam is one of Shiva's 12 most sacred shrines, known as Jyotirlinga.
