The Best Places To Take Dogs in Kent

Each Kent seaside town has a special character of its own – Whitstable has a hipster feel with its oyster house, craft beers and rustic harbour. Herne Bay is all about family fun, and Margate has the Turner Contemporary gallery, Dreamland and vintage shops galore.

Broadstairs has a sandy cove, ice-cream parlours and mini-golf, and Folkestone has a long prom, harbour arm and cobbled streets.

Dungeness is the only official desert in the UK and is a pebble beach dotted with railway-carriage homes and a lighthouse.

With so many different seaside areas to stay in, you can book a holiday location that suits you, your family and your four-legged friend. Check out some more dog friendly attractions in Kent:

Activities & Things to Do

Find below 7 of the best days out in Kent for dogs

1. Run On The Sands At Broadstairs

places to visit in kent dog friendly

Kent has one of the longest coastlines in England, and the beaches are a mix of sand, rock and shingle, so you have your pick in this county. The busier beaches have doggy restrictions from May to September, but at Kingsgate Bay on the edge of Broadstairs there’s a lovely stretch where pooches can run 12 months of the year. Take a picnic with you, there are no refreshments on this beach, or bring your chips from the town, it’s only a few minutes away.

2. Walk On The Weald Of Kent

places to visit in kent dog friendly

The Weald stretches in sections from East Sussex to Kent and it offers peaceful walking trails through the countryside. In Tunbridge Wells, there’s an area of ancient woodland that makes up part of the Weald where you can walk and enjoy the wildlife that lives amongst the trees. Called Barnett’s Wood there are easy-to-navigate trails with a picnic area and playground for the family to enjoy. See the bluebells in early spring and butterflies in summer – it’s a lovely place for dogs in all seasons.

3. Tour The Grounds At Hever Castle

places to visit in kent dog friendly

Once the home of Anne Boleyn, Hever Castle has 700 years of history to its name. Inside, the rooms hold tapestries, antique furniture and ancient bibles that are fascinating to see. Outside, the gardens sprawl for 250 acres and include a maze, boating lake and model village. Dogs are allowed in the outside areas on a lead, and you can walk for hours with them in the grounds if you want to stretch your legs.

4. Walk The White Cliffs Of Dover

places to visit in kent dog friendly

The white cliffs are an iconic sight – there’s even a song about them! Walk your dog here and take in the thrilling landscape. The area is run by the National Trust to make sure the cliffs are protected. There are often ponies grazing on the grasses, and birds nest in spring so there are times when you need to put Fido on a lead.

5. Take A Trip On The Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway

places to visit in kent dog friendly

This miniature railway line goes from Hythe to Dymchurch and is a family favourite attraction. The 13-mile stretch takes 1 hour 15 minutes from one end to the other and there are 5 stops along the way if you want to alight at Romney Sands or St Marys Bay. Doggies can ride as a passenger so it’s a day out you can all enjoy together.

6. Mess About On The River Stour

places to visit in kent dog friendly

Just outside of Canterbury, Canoe Wild hires out self-paddle kayaks for just an hour or the whole day. You can venture along the River Stour to Fordwich – it’s about 5 miles one way. There are single canoes and double kayaks, and man’s best friend is welcome to sit in the vessel with you. What a great way to see the Kent countryside and the wildlife that lives along the water’s edge.

7. Hike The Viking Coastal Path

This trail is 25 miles long in total and is a circular path that goes along the coast at Thanet. Passing the seaside towns of Westgate-on-Sea, Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate, it turns inland to Minster and St Nicholas At Wade. Unless you are after a challenge, just pick a section where you and your doggy can enjoy one of the dog walks in Kent and stroll a few miles breathing in the fresh sea air.

Ernie's Adventures

Sniffing out the best dog-friendly pubs, cottages, hotels and products in the uk, ruff guide to… dover, deal & sandwich.

You’ll find Dover, Deal and Sandwich in Kent’s famous ‘White Cliffs Country’ – one of the warmest places in the UK. With 20 miles of coastline, 30 walking routes and 200 open spaces, it’s a great area to explore with your dog. Around 22% of the region has been designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. So what are you waiting for? Read on to find out more about this stunning part of the UK.

Dover Castle

Dog-friendly Dover, Deal & Sandwich: the must-sees

Roam through centuries of history at Dover Castle – one of England’s oldest strongholds. Henry II started building the castle in the 1180s and it evolved to meet the changing demands of warfare. There are displays on everything from the Romans – who built a lighthouse here – to the role the castle played in two world wars. You can even tour the tunnels that once housed the naval command centre for operations in the English Channel.

Dogs are not allowed inside the castle attractions but they can explore the grounds, which have fantastic views across the Channel. Adult tickets start from £17. Sadly, only assistance dogs are allowed in the two other iconic castles in the area – Deal Castle and Walmer Castle .

Ernie at Deal beach

Step back in time in Deal, by joining one of the walking tours offered by The History Project . Dogs and their owners can join George Chittenden and Henry Fishlock as they explore their historic home town.

Whether you’re keen to find out about the pier, Deal’s shady smuggling past or would just like an overview of the town, there’ll be a tour to suit you . The walks range from 35 minutes to an hour and generally cost a few pounds – but several are free.

Goodnestone Park Gardens

If parks and gardens are more your thing, you’ll be spoilt for choice in White Cliffs Country. Goodnestone Park Gardens , just outside Dover, is one of only three in Kent to feature in the Good Gardens Guide. Adult tickets cost £5 and dogs on leads are allowed everywhere, aside from the walled garden. The Pines Garden , in St Margaret’s Bay, is also worth visiting – even if it’s just for the dog-friendly tea room! Tickets to the organically-managed garden cost £3.

Another great place to visit is Richborough Roman Fort in Sandwich. This once bustling settlement, amid the East Kent marshes, witnessed both the rise and fall of the Roman Empire and is today managed by English Heritage. Dogs on leads are welcome to explore what remains of the site today. Adult tickets start from £7.60.

White Cliffs of Dover

Dog-friendly Dover, Deal & Sandwich: the best walks

You can’t come to White Cliffs Country and not visit the famous landmark that gives the area its name. The chalk cliffs are maintained by the National Trust and are free to visit, although there’s an all-day parking charge of £5. From the White Cliffs Visitor Centre (no dogs allowed inside), you can do a two-mile walk to South Foreland Lighthouse. The views are spectacular, whatever time of year you visit. Look out for the Exmoor ponies grazing on the cliffs!

For something a little more challenging, try the 10-mile Three Castles Walk , which will take you from Dover to Deal. It also starts at the White Cliffs Visitor Centre – where you have excellent views of Dover Castle – and passes the lighthouse. En-route to the finishing point at Deal Pier, you will see Walmer and Deal castles, as well as the former holiday home of James Bond author, Ian Fleming.

Sandwich Guildhall

To see more of this stunning coastline, follow the recently-created England Coast Path . The six-mile Deal to Sandwich stretch is particularly lovely and it also goes past the Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club . This 18-hole Championship Links golf course is often regarded as one of the world’s finest. The walk starts from Deal Pier and ends outside the Guildhall in the heart of medieval Sandwich.

Three miles up the road, you’ll find Sandwich Bay , which is dog-friendly all year round. Time your visit when the tide is out so you can enjoy the expanse of sand, rather than just shingle. There are no facilities here so it’s great if you’re looking for somewhere quiet to walk and relax. However, as the beach is on a private estate, there’s a £7 fee to enter – but only if you arrive by car.

Dog walkers at Samphire Hoe

If country parks are more your thing, check out Samphire Hoe , nestled underneath the White Cliffs of Dover. The park was created by Eurotunnel when it was building the Channel Tunnel and sits on 45 hectares of land reclaimed from the sea. The Hoe, which opened in 1997, is free to visit but parking charges apply. Dogs must also be kept on leads.

Western Heights , built to protect England from a French invasion, is well worth exploring, too. Work on these vast defences, just outside Dover, began during the Napoleonic Wars and finished in the 1860s. The site is now run by English Heritage and managed by the Western Heights Preservation Society , who offer regular tours. Dogs on leads are welcome, and three circular nature walks allow visitors to see the scale of construction here.

Text saying Welcome to France at The Coastguard, St Margaret's Bay

Dog-friendly Dover, Deal & Sandwich: the best pubs and cafes

To experience being in the closest pub to France, head to The Coastguard in St Margaret’s Bay. Depending on your phone network, you’ll get a text welcoming you to the continent! The Coastguard, beneath the famous White Cliffs, has been keeping an eye on the Channel for more than 300 years. The pub is right on the beach – although dog restrictions apply during the summer months.

Another excellent beachfront pub is The Zetland Arms in Kingsdown, near Deal. It specialises in seafood – with great sunsets and stunning views on the side. The Walmer Castle pub in Deal is also super pet-friendly and has a lovely little garden. It doesn’t serve meals but customers are welcome to bring food with them.

The Walmer Castle pub's beer garden, Deal

The ancient Crispin Inn , in Sandwich, serves traditional pub grub alongside an excellent Caribbean menu. And anyone with a sweet tooth should head for Solley’s Farm – the home of Kentish ice cream. Sample more than 15 flavours at its ice cream parlour, near Deal, where dogs on leads are welcome. They can even join you for a country walk. Check out the trails here .

For a locally-sourced brunch or just coffee and a cake, head to Deal Pier Kitchen . This stylish eatery, at the end of the pier, opened in 2019 and dogs are very welcome inside. The same can be said of The King’s Head on Deal seafront, which also offers dog-friendly accommodation. You can’t miss it – just look for all the colourful hanging baskets outside.

King's Head pub, Deal

Dog-friendly Dover, Deal & Sandwich: where to stay

For simple, budget accommodation, look no further than the Waterfront Hotel in Deal. Dogs are warmly welcomed at this seafront hotel, which has a mix of rooms with shared bathrooms and en-suites. Pets are not allowed in the main restaurant but you can dine with your dog in the bar area. Go for the carvery – people come from miles around just to have it.

The White Cliffs Hotel and Bunkhouse in St Margaret’s-at-Cliffe has a range of pet-friendly accommodation, from rooms to cottages. These are all housed in 16th Century weather-boarded buildings, some of which open straight out on to the communal gardens.

Ernie by the wood burner at the Blazing Donkey

The Blazing Donkey in the wonderfully-named Ham, Sandwich, is also excellent for people travelling with pets. Most of the accommodation is in a recently-converted stable block but there are some rooms in the historic main building. The locally-sourced food is excellent and dogs can join their owners for a meal in both the restaurant and bar.

History lovers should try the Bell Hotel in Sandwich, which dates back to Tudor times and overlooks the River Stour. But if you’d prefer to go self-catering, check out the properties offered by Deal Holiday Lets . They specialise in Deal, Sandwich and the surrounding towns and villages and have something to suit every budget. The peaceful Cinque Ports Snug , for example, is perfect for dog owners.

A Southeastern train travels through Kent

How do I get to Dover, Deal & Sandwich?

As one of the key routes for people travelling to and from France, Dover – approximately 70 miles from London – has excellent transport links. If you’re coming by car, the M20 is usually the quickest road to take, especially from the West. It merges into the A20 at Folkestone. Alternatively, there’s the M2, which merges into the A2 at Faversham.

Whether you choose to drive or take the train, the journey time from London should be just over an hour. Three train routes run out of the capital to Dover, but the fastest ones are the Southeastern services from St Pancras International. Southeastern also covers Deal and Sandwich, but from London, you will need to change trains at Folkestone Central.

National Express buses also run to Dover and Canterbury, where you can then pick up local services to Deal and Sandwich. And the nearest airport is London Gatwick , which is approximately 1hr 20mins from Dover by car.

Where can I find out more?

Visit the White Cliffs Country website , where you can read up on things to see and do in the area. The site has been put together by Dover District Council and has lots of information on things such as dog restrictions on beaches. The Visit Kent website is also worth a look and the Explore Kent website has some great suggestions for walks.

Thanks so much for this fantastic blog. Used it loads when planning our visit to the area. Especially would like to second the recommendation for Solley’s Ice Cream parlour. We did their shortest walk with our labs and it was beautiful! Didn’t see another soul all walk and thoroughly enjoyed it!

So glad you found the blog helpful – and enjoyed your trip to Kent! 🐶

11 Best Dog-Friendly Beaches in Kent [2023]

dog friendly beaches kent

Thinking of visiting dog-friendly beaches in Kent? We got you.

The beach is my dogs favourite walkie destination. Whenever the word ‘beach’ is mentioned his ears perk up and his tail immediately starts wagging. He loves running along the sand, paddling in the water and of course making friends with his fellow furry friends. Fortunately for him, I have family who lives in Kent, so we’ve been lucky enough to explore many of the county’s gorgeous beaches.

Kent is a beautiful county in South East England that is known for its stunning coastlines, picturesque beaches and nature reserves. The county boasts some of the best dog-friendly beaches in the country, each with its own unique characteristics and attractions. Whether you’re looking for a remote and quiet beach away from the hustle and bustle, or a busier beach with a busy town to explore, Kent has them all. So if you’re looking for a seaside escape, Kent is an ideal destination for pet owners who want to enjoy the sun, sand, and sea with their furry friends.

In this article, we will highlight some of the best dog-friendly beaches in Kent and help you choose the best one for you.

What are the best dog-friendly beaches in Kent?

1. Botany Bay, near Margate.

places to visit in kent dog friendly

Botany Bay is my personal favourite dog-friendly beach in Kent. Unlike some of the other beaches in Kent, Botany Bay has a long stretch of soft, golden sand. It is one of the most picturesque beaches, backed by towering cliffs, made up of layers of different-coloured rock. At low tide, you can explore the fascinating rock formations and caves along the shoreline. The beach is part of the Viking Coastal Trail, a 27-mile walking and cycling route that runs along the coast of Kent. The trail offers stunning views of the coastline and is a great way to explore the area.

Despite being one of the most picturesque beaches, it’s one of the quieter beaches. The beach is quite secluded, making it an ideal destination for pet owners who want to let their dogs run and play freely. There are several amenities at Botany Bay, including toilets, showers, and a seasonal beach café. There is also a large car park nearby.

There is a dog ban in place from 1st May until 30th September, meaning dogs are not permitted between 10am to 6pm. However, I have let my dog off lead all year round and have personally never ran into any trouble. Just be sure to keep your dog under control and away from any barbecues or picnics.

Beach type : sand Toilets : yes Parking : yes Food : yes (seasonal) Vibe : on the quieter side Dog restrictions : dogs on leads from 1st May until 30th September

2. Kingsgate Bay, Broadstairs.

dog friendly beaches kent kingsgate

Located just a short two-mile drive north from Broadstairs, Kingsgate Bay is popular among dog owners who are looking for a quieter seaside experience. While families with younger kids may be tempted to stay closer to Viking Bay or one of the other beaches that feature lifeguards, dog owners tend to like the fact there’s fewer people around.

But what it lacks in amenities, Kingsgate Bay Beach more than makes up for when it comes to providing picturesque views of the stunning coastline. Sheltered by high cliffs and reachable only by a set of steep steps set in the cliff face, it boasts a sandy, pebble-free beach that’s sheltered from sea breezes or rough seas.

Kingsgate Bay is one of the most popular dog-friendly beaches in Kent as it welcomes dogs all year-round.

Beach type : sand Toilets : yes Parking : yes Food : yes (seasonal) Vibe : on the quieter side Dog restrictions : none

3. The Warren, Folkestone.

dog friendly beaches kent folkestone

The Warren is a pleasant sandy beach, that is popular for its rock pools, like many of the dog-friendly beaches in Kent. The beach is also quite popular amongst fossil hunters as over the years some interesting specimens have been found here!

The beach backs onto an area known as The Warren Country Park, a beautiful nature reserve where dogs are allowed to run freely. The Country Park is home to a wide variety of rare animal and plant life.

There are toilets close by, however the nearest food outlets are 1 mile away in Folkestone, so it’s a good idea to bring some snacks or a picnic!

There is a dog ban in place from 1 st  May until 30 th September, which bans dogs from visiting from 10am – 6pm. However, I personally find that it isn’t very well policed and many owners still bring their dogs to visit the beach. Just be sure to keep an eye on your dog to avoid any trouble.

4. Samphire Hoe, near Dover.

dog friendly beach kent dover

With the beautiful background of the famous White Cliffs of Dover, Samphire Hoe is one of the most stunning a dog-friendly beaches in Kent. Located 2 miles west of Dover, it is a 30-hectare nature reserve created from 4.9 million cubic metres of excess chalk from the Channel Tunnel excavations. There is a stunning circular walk that takes approximately 40 minutes to complete. Down on the beach, there’s plenty of rock pools and rubble for you and your dog to explore. There is a lovely little tea kiosk with accessible facilities, parking, and wheelchair-friendly routes.

Due to the rocky terrain on the beach, Samphire Hoe is not the most ideal beach for swimming, but it’s a great spot for rock pooling, walking, cycling, fishing off the seawall (a daily licence is required), as well as bird watching. While the beach is very dog friendly, there is an on-lead policy.

5. Viking Bay, Broadstairs.

places to visit in kent dog friendly

Viking Bay is located in Broadstairs and is a popular dog-friendly beach in Kent. It’s a little busier than some of the other beaches listed, but if you’re looking for somewhere to spend the day, Viking Bay is perfect as there are several amenities, including toilets, showers, and a seasonal lifeguard station. There are also several restaurants, cafes, and ice cream shops close by in Broadstairs town, as well as a children’s play area.

Viking Bay is a popular venue for events and festivals, particularly during the summer months. The annual Broadstairs Folk Week is held in August and attracts musicians and dancers from all over the world.

The beach is dog-friendly all year round, but owners are reminded to keep them under control at all times.

Broadstairs train station is a short walk up the road from the beach, so it’s an ideal destination if you don’t drive.

6. Joss Bay, Broadstairs.

dog friendly beaches kent joss bay

Joss Bay is a beautiful sandy beach sheltered by steep chalk cliffs and backing on to the North Foreland golf course . Joss Bay is backed by tall cliffs, which offer stunning views of the sea. At low tide, you can explore the rock pools and discover all sorts of marine life.

It’s more remote than some beaches, but there are several amenities at Joss Bay, including toilets, showers, and a seasonal beach café. There’s also a lovely dog-friendly clifftop pub called The Captain Digby to stop and have some lunch. There’s also deck-chair hire if you want the full English seaside experience!

The beach is dog-friendly all year round, but owners are reminded to keep their dogs under control at all times.

7. Whitstable Beach, Whitstable.

places to visit in kent dog friendly

Whitstable beach is one of the best dog-friendly beaches in Kent. It is a popular destination for day-trippers and holidaymakers, thanks in part to its beautiful pebble beach and charming town. Along the beachfront, there is a wide promenade that runs the length of the town, a great place for you and your pooch to explore. The town is home to plenty of antique shops, independent shops, locally crafted beers and plenty of cafes, restaurants and pubs, where you can stop for a rest or a snack. You may even want to try some of the local famous Oysters, caught right off the shore. Along the promenade, you’ll see dozens of colourful beach huts, which are available to rent by the day or week.

There are no restrictions for your dog, so you can let him run free!

8. Dungeness, near Lydd-on-Sea.

dungeness dog friendly beaches kent

Dungeness Beach is the second largest shingle formation in the world, located on the south coast of Kent. Because of this, it’s better suited for dog-owners who want to explore and hike, as opposed to lounging and swimming.

The Dungeness reserve itself is set back from the sea, boasting mile after mile of open shingle, fresh water pits, wet grassland and stunning wildflower meadows. Here you  can enjoy a 12.7-km circular trail near Romney Marsh. Generally considered an easy route, it takes an average of 2 h 39 min to complete. It’s a great trail if you’d like to get away from the crowds and reconnect with nature as it’s an ideal and quiet spot for bird watching. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. Dogs are welcome on the trail, but must be on a lead.

There are public toilets, a couple of pubs and a cafe at the steam train station, so you can stop to have a bite and a bev.

9. D umpton Gap Beach, Ramsgate.

dog friendly beach kent

Dumpton Gap is a charming little beach, only about 150m in length but well worth the journey. It is a quiet, peaceful beach that is perfect for a relaxing day out. The lack of crowds and amenities means that you can enjoy the natural beauty of the area without any distractions. The best time to visit is during low tide, when hundreds of rock pools are exposed for you and your dog to explore. There are also some lovely walking routes to Ramsgate town. However, please pay attention to the tides as the beach disappears at high tide!

There are no facilities at Dumpton Gap, so it’s important to bring your own food, water, and other essentials. There is a car park nearby, although it can get busy during peak season. The beach is dog friendly all year round with no restrictions.

Beach type : sand Toilets : no Parking : yes Food : no Vibe : on the quieter side Dog restrictions : none

10. Sandwich Bay, Sandwich.

dog friendly beaches kent sandwich

Sandwich Bay occupies a long inlet of the sea, which runs between Ramsgate and Deal. The beach has plenty to discover when the tide is out, a popular spot to fly kites, bird watch and fish. The beach consists of sand flats, salt marshes and sand dunes, a varied terrain that your dog will enjoy exploring. There is also a fantastic walk to the caves that lead to Western Undercliff. A real adventure destination!

Sandwich Bay is surrounded by several golf courses and a private estate, which means it can be a little more complicated to reach than other beaches. The best way to the bay is to drive. The road takes you through a private toll road, but for a visit to one of the most peaceful dog-friendly beaches in Kent, it’s well worth it.

11. Walmer Beach, Deal.

places to visit in kent dog friendly

Walmer Beach is a dog-friendly beaches in Kent ideal for those who want to explore and get away from the crowds. Walmer is a small shingle and pebble beach located in the village of Walmer, just south of Deal. Unlike some of the more popular beaches in the area, Walmer Beach tends to be quieter and less crowded, so it’s a great place to enjoy a peaceful day by the sea. The beach at Walmer is a mix of shingle and pebbles, which can make it a bit uncomfortable for sunbathing. However, the beach is popular with dog walkers and there are plenty of rock pools to explore at low tide.

There is a coastal path that runs along the top of the cliffs overlooking the beach. This is a great place for a dog walk and offers stunning views of the coastline. Although Walmer Beach itself is fairly secluded, there are plenty of amenities nearby in the town of Deal, including restaurants, cafes, and shops.

There are no restrictions on bringing dogs to Walmer beach.

Tips for visiting dog-friendly beaches in Kent.

1. Bring plenty of water.

Dogs can easily become dehydrated when playing in the sun and sand, so it’s important to bring plenty of water and a bowl for your dog to drink from. Make sure to offer your dog water frequently to keep them hydrated. Don’t let your dog drink the sea water, as it’s not good for their health.

2. Train recall.

Before letting your dog off the lead, make sure they are good at recall. Unless your dog will respond to your commands, it’s a good idea to keep your dog on a leash. This will help you keep them under control and prevent any accidents or incidents.

3. Watch out for signs of heatstroke.

Dogs can easily overheat in hot weather, especially when playing on the beach. Watch for signs of heatstroke, such as excessive panting, drooling, and lethargy, and take your dog to a shaded area and offer them water if you notice any symptoms. It’s a good idea to find a shaded part of the beach, or bring an umbrella to provide some shade for your dog.

4. Clean up after your dog.

Always bring waste bags with you and clean up after your dog. Not only is it a responsible thing to do, but it also helps keep the beach clean and safe for everyone to enjoy.

5. Bring a towel.

After playing in the water, make sure to dry your dog off with a towel to prevent them from getting chilled or developing skin irritations.

6. Watch out for washed up sea creatures.

There are sadly many sea creatures that get washed up to shore. Keep an eye on your dog to make sure they don’t eat anything they shouldn’t.

Areas such as Botany Bay, Dungeness and Samphire Hoe give you amazing views, meaning you can walk your way around the Kent coastal map enjoying everything from exploring rock pools, bird-watching or watching the local fishing boats come in and out. Some of the best dog-friendly beaches in Kent, such as Sandwich Bay and Botany Bay have plenty of sea caves for you and your dog to explore, too.

Where many of the beaches in Kent have no dog restrictions, some of them do have a dog ban in place from May to September. So, be sure to check the restrictions and keep your dog under control at all times.
