Best European cruises for families: Disney Dream
Disney Cruise Line is great for kids; if you're planning a cruise in Europe with kids, Disney Dream is a logical choice for best European cruise for families.
Character meet 'n' greets, awe-inspiring nighttime entertainment and fun dining experiences mean your kiddos will never be bored. The ship's stellar kids clubs go above and beyond with a likeness of Andy's room from "Toy Story" and a replica of the Millennium Falcon from "Star Wars" (with visits from R2-D2 and a squad of stormtroopers).
Disney Dream is not the line's newest ship, meaning it's a bit more manageable in terms of both size and price. It's not the oldest, either, so families will find more things to do on board than on the line's smallest vessels.
Ashore, Disney's family-friendly excursions will take you to laze on the beach, explore museums and learn about history.
Disney Dream sails three- to 12-night cruises to Northern and Western Europe, the British Isles and the Mediterranean. Cruise fares start from $308 per person, per night, for a windowless inside cabin. You can visit ports like Belfast and Liverpool on cruises from Southampton; Florence and Rome (Civitavecchia) on Barcelona sailings; and Reykjavik, Copenhagen and Lisbon on open-jaw itineraries.

Best European cruises for couples: Viking Star
If you're a couple seeking an upscale Mediterranean experience that offers real value and a chance to reconnect with your partner, look no further than Viking .
The line's Viking Star sails various Mediterranean itineraries, and the European ports the ship visits offer plenty of opportunities for you to feel the love. Have a phenomenal lunch at a table for two in France, take a pizza-making class together in Italy, get a little giggly at a wine tasting in Greece, or run the casino tables together in Monaco.
Viking includes at least one free shore excursion per port in its fares. That means you can wander Europe's romantic cobblestone streets hand in hand with your sweetie without paying a penny extra.
While fares aren't the cheapest you'll find, you'll get a lot for your money. In addition to the tours, Viking includes Wi-Fi, specialty dining, and beer and wine with lunch and dinner in its prices.
Plus, all cabins on Viking's ships have balconies, which is great if you want some fresh air but feel like keeping to yourself. Complimentary room service is available 24/7, so you can order dinner to your cabin for a relaxing alfresco dining experience for two.
Want even more ways to pamper yourselves together? Check out the phenomenal thermal suite in the ship's spa , which offers sauna and steam rooms, tile loungers and aromatherapy rooms at no extra charge. Or, splurge on a couples massage, which will leave both of you feeling loose and refreshed.
Even better, Viking ships do not allow children on board. It's a great excuse for you and your significant other to rekindle the romance without other passengers' kids running around.
Viking's Mediterranean sailings range from seven to 21 nights. Back-to-back itineraries are rarely the same as Viking Star circles the Med. The ship visits ports such as Barcelona, Spain; Marseille, France; Florence (Livorno), Rome (Civitavecchia), Sicily and Venice, Italy; Monte Carlo, Monaco; Dubrovnik, Croatia; Athens and Santorini, Greece; and Kusadasi, Turkey.
Fares start from $381 per person, per night, for a balcony stateroom.

Best European cruises for seniors: Seabourn Sojourn
If you're a senior traveler who loves great food and excellent wine, one of the best luxury European cruises you can book is a Canary Islands cruise on Seabourn 's Seabourn Sojourn.
The small ship carries fewer than 500 passengers, and you won't find raucous parties or tons of children. Instead, you'll be met with stellar service, gourmet food, a room with a view (all cabins have at least a window) and relative peace and quiet. The long itineraries are ideal for wealthier passengers with lots of time to travel.
Seabourn Sojourn's voyages to the Canaries span 10 to 28 days and visit the islands of La Palma, Gran Canaria and Madeira, as well as Lisbon, Portugal. Fares start from $434 per person, per night, for an ocean-view cabin. Extras like Wi-Fi, gratuities and alcohol (including the in-room mini-bar) are rolled into the fares.

Best for solo cruisers: Norwegian Epic
When Norwegian Epic debuted in 2010, it introduced Norwegian Cruise Line 's first cabins for solo travelers. Designed with single beds and a bit less square footage, these so-called studio cabins are clustered around an exclusive lounge reserved for solos. Special activities allow folks traveling alone to mingle and make new friends.
Since Norwegian Epic began sailing, nearly all of the line's new ships — Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Getaway, Norwegian Escape, Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva — have been built with accommodations for one, which don't charge occupants a single supplement . However, it's Norwegian Epic that has a presence in the Western Mediterranean, offering solo cruisers a chance to explore Europe on a ship with staterooms just for them.
On board, passengers have plenty of choices for activities and dining. In addition to the usual cruise-ship offerings — pool games, dance parties, game shows, trivia and movie screenings — Epic offers many fun diversions, including an adults-only beach club at the back of the ship, spa treatments, a bowling alley and even gaming lessons (the latter three for a fee).
The vessel sails five- to 12-night voyages back and forth between Rome and Barcelona, calling on ports that include Naples, Palma de Mallorca, Ibiza, Marseille, Cannes and Florence (Livorno). At press time, last-minute fares started from $90 per person, per night, for a studio cabin for one.

Best European party cruises: Virgin Voyages' Resilient Lady
If your Europe bucket list includes the Greek Isles, you don't want to sail with children, and you enjoy a lively party atmosphere, you can't go wrong with Virgin Voyages ' Resilient Lady. The third ship in the line's fleet, Resilient Lady offers some of the best cruises to the Greek Islands.
Expect a casual vibe where passengers dress up like mermaids, crew dress up like drag queens, and performers look like real people. Toss in an onboard tattoo parlor, a food court ( it's not a buffet ), free fitness classes and an app that lets you order Champagne to wherever you are on the ship, and you've got a product that has turned the cruise industry on its head.
Wild nights on board include raucous and sometimes raunchy theater shows, impromptu dance parties and Scarlet Night, a poolside bash reminiscent of a rave where everyone's dressed in red. If that's not enough, attend enough daily activities, and you might be invited to a secret nighttime tour of the crew bar, drinks included.
The ship offers a regular program of 7-, 10- and 14-night voyages, starting from $148 per person, per night, for an inside cabin. The itineraries involve a mix of ports in Greece, Montenegro, Croatia and Turkey, depending on the specific sailing you choose.

Best European cruises for 'wow' factor: Hurtigruten's Richard With
Looking for a sailing that no other cruise line offers — one that will make everyone on TikTok and Instagram jealous? I'm putting my money on a line you've likely never heard of: Hurtigruten .
What began more than 130 years ago as a way for Norway's residents to move themselves and cargo up and down the Norwegian coast continues today as both a means of transportation and a way for cruisers to experience the country's culture.
On the cruise line's Norwegian Coastal Express route, Hurtigruten's Richard With ship calls on 34 ports in just seven days. Some are quick stops in the middle of the night while cargo is loaded and unloaded, but you technically could get off the ship in each port if you wanted to. That in itself makes this itinerary buzzworthy.
Still need convincing? These voyages also cross into the Arctic Circle and sail into Geirangerfjord (northbound from Bergen to Kirkenes) and Trollfjord (southbound from Kirkenes to Bergen), affording absolutely breathtaking views and, of course, bragging rights.
The two routes can be combined into longer 13-day sailings, meaning you'd sail round-trip from Bergen and see all the fjords. Seven-night northbound itineraries from Bergen to Kirkenes start at $331 per person, per night, for an inside cabin.
Bottom line
Ultimately, the best cruise to Europe is a bit subjective in that it depends where in Europe you'd like to go and what your travel style is. Be sure to weigh a combination of destination, price and onboard vibe when deciding which is best for you and your travel party.

The Best Europe Cruises for 2021 and Beyond
Whether it’s sailing around norway’s fjords or taking a family-friendly cruise in italy, europe cruising is returning with ample options for those who craving a turn at sea..
- Copy Link copied
If you want to see the Northern Lights in Norway, Seabourn’s wintertime Norway cruises are your best bet.
After a pandemic year without any European cruises available to Americans, sailing options are returning for the summer 2021 season. Cruise lines are testing the waters with a limited number of ships and new health and safety protocols in place with most cruises restricted to passengers who have been vaccinated.
There are benefits to being first in line postpandemic. Ships will sail at reduced capacity and popular attractions are unlikely to be crowded. You may find you have a museum or café practically to yourself. As restrictions ease, the traffic is bound to pick up in 2022, which already is looking like a year when ships will sail full due to pent-up demand.
Here are our picks for cruises this summer and beyond.
Norway: Seabourn wintertime cruise
Seeing the Northern Lights is practically guaranteed on Seabourn’s new wintertime Norway itineraries debuting in December. The 12- to 14-day sailings also introduce the line’s first purpose-built, polar-class expedition yacht, the 264-passenger Seabourn Venture , equipped with two custom, six-seat submarines, two dozen Zodiacs, and expedition kayaks for intimate exploration of Norway’s winter landscape. Excursions, which include the opportunity to camp on land overnight for optimal Northern Lights viewing, are led by a 26-person expedition team. Alternatively, you may opt to just stay cozy in your fancy suite and get a wake-up call should the lights appear. Most departures are from Tromsø, Norway, or Copenhagen, with fares for 12-night sailings starting from $10,999 per person.
Greece: A crusie with Seabourn, Silversea, Ponant, Windstar, or Variety Cruises
With its historic sites, whitewashed towns, the popular beaches of Mykonos, and views galore in the cliffside towns of Santorini, Greece opened its doors to international travelers in May. Nearly a dozen cruise lines are returning to the Aegean this summer and fall so there are ample options for those seeking to sail the Greek isles.
Ultraluxury lines such as Seabourn and Silversea are in the mix for summer 2021, along with boutique lines such as France-based Ponant and Windstar , with its 148-passenger, four-masted Wind Star sailing ship.
Or explore for a week on Greek-owned Variety Cruises ’ 157-foot, 49-passenger sailing yacht Galileo , going beyond the norm to lesser-known Cycladic and Dodecanese islands such as Levitha, where a summertime restaurant for sailors is run by the one family who lives on the island.
Adriatic: Viking’s 10-night Malta and Adriatic Jewels Cruise
Viking’s Malta and Adriatic Jewels Cruise includes port stops in Croatia.

When Viking Ocean Cruises returns to cruising this summer, it will have three ships sailing from Valletta on Malta to Greece, Italy, and Spain. Our pick is Viking’s 10-night Malta and Adriatic Jewels Cruise, roundtrip from Valletta. The ship gets you to Kotor, Montenegro (you’ll want to be on deck as you sail through a river valley surrounded by peaks); the fairy-tale-like Old Town of Dubrovnik, Croatia; the Croatian city of Split with its 4th-century Roman palace; and Gozo, Malta, where according to legend giants built the prehistoric palace, which predates Stonehenge. There’s also opportunity in Croatia and Malta to see filming locations for HBO’s Game of Thrones . Sail on the 930-passenger Viking Venus , a new ship from Viking. Fares from $3,599 per person.
Basque Country: Lindblad Expeditions Lisbon to Bordeaux cruise
New from Lindblad Expeditions in April 2022 is a unique cultural exploration cruise from Lisbon to Bordeaux . The itinerary begins in Porto, Portugal, and continues through Basque country to the epicenter for French wine, Bordeaux, with a strong focus on food and drink throughout the cruise.
Spain and France: National Geographic Resolution
Sail on the new, polar-class, 126-passenger National Geographic Resolution , where you can work out in the yoga studio or linger in the infinity-style hot tubs when not on shore sipping port at the wine cellars in Porto. During the cruise, you will have the opportunity to spend a day collecting mussels with local fishermen in Galicia, Spain, visit Bilbao’s Frank Gehry–designed Guggenheim art museum, and sample tapas and sparkling wine in a French Basque fishing village. Fares from $6,870 per person.
River Cruise: AmaWaterways’ AmaMagna cruise
Get into the heart of great European cities such as Budapest on a Danube river cruise.
River cruises return this summer , with Viking, Uniworld, Scenic, and AmaWaterways among the lines relaunching ships—although not their whole fleets—on rivers that include Portugal’s Douro, France’s Seine and Rhône, and the multi-country Rhine and Danube. A great way to sail the Danube is on AmaWaterways ’ impressive, double-wide, 196-passenger AmaMagna , traveling between Budapest and Vilshofen, Germany, stopping in Bratislava, Slovakia, and with an overnight in Vienna. Sip the local gruner veltliner and riesling in Wachau Valley or dance like you are in The Sound of Music in Salzburg. Back on the ship, check out in wellness classes on the spacious roof deck or dining in onboard restaurants that include a fancy Chef’s Table venue (where you might score a taste of Siberian caviar) and a wine bar. Seven-night cruise from $3,099 per person.
Iceland: Crystal Cruises’ new Crystal Endeavor
The land of fire and ice is open for cruising this summer, and several lines will be exploring the coast, bringing guests to lava fields, gigantic waterfalls, seabird colonies, and other striking landscapes under the Midnight Sun. Luxury line Crystal Cruises is debuting its new 200-passenger, polar-class Crystal Endeavor , equipped with two six-passenger helicopters, a six-passenger submarine and the only casino on an expedition ship, on 10-night sailings (fares from $16,499 per person). Circumnavigating Iceland from Reykjavík, the itinerary includes stops on the mainland and islands including Grimsey Island, above the Arctic Circle, where you might catch sight of rare little auks with their black and white plumage.
Italy: Disney’s Disney Magic cruise
If the upcoming Disney and Pixar movie “Luca” has the family hankering for Italy, get the crew on a Disney cruise that includes Genoa.
Attention Disney and Pixar fans. If, after seeing the movie Luca , which debuts June 18, your family gets a hankering to visit Italy, Disney Cruise Line has you covered. The 1,750-passenger Disney Magic will sail in Europe spring and summer 2022, with several sailings stopping in Italy. A six-night departure from Barcelona to Rome on June 4, 2022 (fares for a family of four sharing a cabin start at $6,732 per person), gets you to Genoa, which is key. Scenes from the movie, a 1950s coming-of-age story, are inspired by the area southeast of Genoa. An Ultimate Italian Riviera shore excursion ($159 per person) takes you to the town of Camogli and other sites that will look familiar to Luca fans. Disney is being mum about any possible movie-related character appearances and experiences.
All-Europe: Silversea’s Grand Europe cruise
If you are uneasy about returning to Europe this year, consider making up for lost time in one fell swoop. Ultraluxury line Silversea has assigned its 596-passenger Silver Moon to a Grand Europe itinerary embarking Athens on March 30, 2022, and hitting basically all major water-accessible attractions—72 ports of call in 22 countries in total—on a three-month itinerary that ends in Stockholm. Can’t be away that long? You can alternatively book a 37-night segment to visit 33 places in the Mediterranean, or a 53-night segment that will get you from Lisbon to Stockholm, including the British Isles, Scandinavia, and Russia. Fares for the whole shebang from $57,060 per person.
British Isles and Ireland: Hurtigruten
Visit Northern Ireland’s Giant’s Causeway on a Hurtigruten cruise.
Norwegian line Hurtigruten explores remote parts of the British Isles on a 12-night itinerary (from $6,741 per person) next spring and summer, with the recently updated 532-passenger Maud. Sailing roundtrip from Dover, United Kingdom, passengers will visit places known for Neolithic sites, bird colonies, whiskey, and woolens. Among the destinations are Rathlin Island in Northern Ireland, with easy access to the basalt columns of the Giant’s Causeway, and Scotland’s Inner and Outer Hebrides, including the rocky and wild St. Kilda archipelago, home to the second-largest gannet colony in the world. Plan to sip on Islay Island, Scotland, home to nine distilleries, and have an opportunity to purchase crystal in Waterford, Ireland. For those looking to reduce their footprint as they return to travel, it’s worth noting that the ship was recently reconfigured to run partially on biofuel and lower emissions.

My 7 Favorite Cruises In And Around Europe
- Cruises and Sailing
- Destinations
- Mediterranean Cruises
- Types of Travel
What I love most about cruising around Europe is the huge choice in types of cruises you can go on. Because Europe includes hot and sunny destinations like Spain and Italy, and cold and interesting places like Scandinavia and Scotland, you can take a very different cruise each time around Europe. You can pull up in pretty ports in Greece and swim from the boat and you can sail around the shores of Scotland and take a cold water plunge — if you’re brave enough.
The coastlines of Europe are vastly different to one another and the types of cruises you can take are too. River cruises, yachts, island cruises, and large fun-packed cruise lines all sail around these shores. Plus, you can start your cruise in Europe and sail off beyond the continent, and then return after an adventure.
Here are my 7 favorite cruises in and around Europe.
1. Starclippers
Rome round trip .
This seven-night cruise begins and ends in Rome, visiting Lipari, Sicily, Amalfi, Sorrento, and Ponza. What I love about the Starclipper cruises is they are informal and casual — you dine with other guests or by yourself, you don’t have a set table for meals, and you can wear what you like as there’s no dress code. But at the same time, the interior of the ship and the cabins are sophisticated and semi luxurious, so it feels casual and chic all in one go.
This particular cruise is on the Starflyer , which has two pools and a sun deck. There’s no entertainment on board, though there might be some games in the evening, but children are welcome over the age of 6 months. I love these small-yacht ships that can get you into ports the larger cruise ships can’t, and this one is a beautiful ship with an atmosphere of relaxation and easygoingness. You can even join with the crew and help to sail the ship if you like.
2. French Waterways
Hotel barge prospérité: côte d’or.
If you like things really intimate, you can book a six- or eight-person cruise with French Waterways and have the barge to yourselves. This one is a canal cruise in France, but they also offer river cruises. The rooms on the barge are hotel standard and there’s a sun deck and a hot tub on board. The cruise ambles along the canals in the Côte d’Or, stopping off for a walking tour in Dijon, shopping and markets, and wine tasting at a vineyard.
This is a really relaxing way to cruise in France with family or friends, but you can’t book onto this cruise as a single person or a couple. This is a chartered barge that is priced for the maximum number of people it sleeps — six or eight. If you’re experienced, you can also choose to pilot the boat yourself.
3. G Adventures
Sailing from split to dubrovnik.
Sailing along the Dalmatian Coast is a unique experience and visiting Croatia is a trip full of historical sites and exploration. The yachts you’ll travel on with G Adventures give you a truly small-boat experience. If you want a luxurious cabin and lush interiors, this isn’t for you, but if you want a sense of adventure and an authentic sailing experience, this is definitely it.
The yacht accommodates a maximum of eight people, but you don’t have to be a part of the group, you can book onto this as a single person or couple. Note: If you book a solo trip, you will be sharing your cabin with someone else. It’s also worth noting that you’ll need a medium level of physical fitness to take part in the activities on this tour, which can include kayaking and hiking.
This is a self-catering trip, and while there’s plenty of opportunities to eat at the destinations, there aren’t any meals offered on board. This also means that when you eat your own food on the ship and/or cook for yourself in the kitchen, you are expected to tidy up after.
4. Hebridean Adventures
Hebridean island odyssey.
Sailing on board the MV Hjalmar Bjørge with the Northern Light Cruising Company, Hebridean Adventures brings you a trip like no other around the Hebrides Islands in Scotland. This nine-night cruise stops at Mull, Coll & Tiree, the Small Isles, and the Isle of Skye. Most people who take this cruise are wildlife enthusiasts and are sailing with the hope of spotting dolphins, puffins, eagles, and more. But even if you only have a passing interest in wildlife, this is a stunning way to get a bit closer to it.
Facilities are limited on board and the cabins are no-frills, with some only including bunk beds. You do have to share bathroom facilities, which is a challenge for some people, but guests are all aware of this and are very considerate. The onboard chef is a real plus on this cruise and they cater for any dietary requirements, cooking all meals fresh every day. The boat might be basic, but the scenery is breathtaking and it’s a unique type of cruise.
5. Celebrity Cruises
Egypt & israel.
Beginning in Athens, Greece, this 10-night cruise with Celebrity Cruises will stop off at Israel and Egypt before returning to Athens. There are 3 days at sea on this cruise, and on board the Celebrity Infinity , there’s a casino, an art gallery, a sun deck, indoor and outdoor pool areas, a spa, tennis, nightlife, and restaurants and bars.
This is a large cruise ship experience with capacity for 2,170 people. Rooms are hotel standard, some with verandas, and the experience of being on the ship is as much a part of the trip as exploring the stop-off destinations. The cruise gives you the perfect mix between Europe and a little further afield. For anyone who hasn’t strayed beyond Europe before, it’s a great way to get a taste of Egypt and Israel.
6. Variety Cruises
Italy & malta.
Beginning in Naples and sailing along the coast of Italy and around its islands, this small boat intimate cruise with Variety Cruises ends on the 8th day in Malta. At first, I thought it was unusual to end in a totally different place than where the cruise began, but actually, I loved the chance to get to know somewhere separate from the starting point.
The ship has capacity for 44 people and is a laid-back experience with just a sundeck, informal restaurant, bar, and swim platform. Most of your time is spent off the boat, exploring parts of Italy tourists don’t usually visit, and that’s the real draw with these small-boat cruises. These are ports large cruise ships can’t enter, so you feel like you’re on a voyage of discovery. Rooms are comfortable and pleasantly decorated and designed, but you won’t be spending much time in them. The Italian islands and Malta are beautiful places to explore.
7. Princess Cruises
Grand 11-day mediterranean.
This big cruise ship experience with Princess Cruises begins in Rome and travels to Greece, Turkey, Sicily, and Mallorca, ending in Barcelona, Spain. Aboard the Sun Princess ship, it’s all about fun on a large scale, with climbing walls, swimming pools, a spa, bars, cafés, restaurants, evening entertainment, and kids clubs.
It is aimed at families and there’s lots for all ages to do, but it’s also a great cruise to take as a couple or by yourself. There’s something going on all the time, but you can still find some quiet time on the sun deck. There’s 3 days at sea on this 11-day cruise and you’ll certainly never get bored. I love the stop-offs and visits to four different countries, with some really diverse excursions offered at every stop.

Whether you prefer a large-scale ship with a multitude of activities or a more intimate and luxurious experience, there is a cruise line that will exceed your expectations.
Factors to Consider When Choosing a Cruise Line for Europe
Choosing the right cruise line for your European adventure is crucial in ensuring a memorable and fulfilling experience. With so many options available, it can be challenging to narrow down your choices. To help you make an informed decision, here are some important factors to consider when selecting a cruise line for your European voyage:
- Itinerary: Look closely at the cruise line’s itinerary and destinations. If you have specific countries or regions in Europe that you want to visit, ensure that the cruise line includes them in their routes. Pay attention to the ports of call and the duration of each stay, as this can significantly impact the depth of your exploration.
- Onboard Amenities: Consider the amenities and facilities offered onboard. Do you prefer a cruise line that provides a wide range of dining options, or are you looking for a more intimate and exclusive culinary experience? Are you interested in onboard entertainment such as Broadway-style shows or live music performances? Determine what amenities are important to you and choose a cruise line that best aligns with your preferences.
- Ships: Take into account the size and type of ships in the cruise line’s fleet. Larger, mega-ships often offer a broader range of activities and entertainment options, while smaller ships can provide a more intimate and personalized experience. Consider whether you desire a bustling atmosphere with lots of fellow passengers or a quieter, more serene ambiance.
- Shore Excursions: Explore the shore excursions offered by the cruise line. Are there opportunities for guided tours, cultural experiences, or active adventures? Research the availability of excursions that align with your interests and make sure they are included in the cruise line’s offerings.
- Service and Reputation: Research the cruise line’s reputation for service and customer satisfaction. Read reviews from previous passengers to gain insights into the quality of service provided by the crew and staff. A reputable cruise line with a track record of excellent customer service will enhance your overall experience.
By considering these factors, you can narrow down your options and choose a cruise line that aligns with your preferences, interests, and budget. Remember that the right cruise line can make a significant difference in your European adventure, providing you with a seamless and extraordinary journey through the magnificent cities and landscapes of this enchanting continent.

Tips for Planning a European Cruise
Planning a European cruise requires careful consideration and preparation to ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey. Here are some essential tips to help you plan your European cruise:
- Select the Right Time and Duration: Determine the best time to visit Europe based on your preferences and desired activities. Consider factors such as weather, crowd levels, and special events. Decide on the duration of your cruise, keeping in mind the number of destinations you wish to explore and the time needed to fully experience each port of call.
- Research Visa Requirements: Check if you need a visa to visit particular countries in Europe and ensure that you have the necessary documentation. Some cruise lines may provide assistance with visa applications, so inquire about this during your booking process.
- Research Port Cities: Familiarize yourself with the cities and ports included in your cruise itinerary. Research their top attractions, local customs, and transportation options. This will help you plan your time in each destination and make the most of your visit.
- Pack Accordingly: Pack lightweight and versatile clothing suitable for various weather conditions. Consider bringing comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, a hat, and a backpack for day trips. Don’t forget essentials like your passport, travel insurance, and any necessary medications.
- Pre-book Shore Excursions: Research and pre-book shore excursions that interest you. This guarantees availability and allows you to make the most of your time in port. Whether it’s a guided city tour, a hiking excursion, or a culinary experience, pre-booking ensures you don’t miss out on the activities you’re most excited about.
- Stay Connected: Check with your mobile service provider about international roaming plans or consider purchasing a local SIM card when in port to stay connected. Alternatively, take advantage of onboard internet packages to keep in touch with family and friends or to share your travel experiences on social media.
- Learn the Basics of Local Culture: Familiarize yourself with basic etiquette and customs of the countries you’ll be visiting. Learning a few key phrases in the local language can also enhance your interactions with locals and make your experience more enjoyable.
- Make Time for Rest and Relaxation: While it’s tempting to explore every port and participate in every onboard activity, it’s essential to pace yourself and allow time for rest and relaxation. Use sea days to rejuvenate by taking advantage of onboard spa facilities, lounging by the pool, or simply enjoying the serenity of the ocean.
- Prepare for Currency and Payment Options: Research the currency used in the countries you visit and consider obtaining a small amount of local currency for small purchases. Most places in Europe accept major credit cards, but it’s a good idea to carry some cash for smaller establishments or for areas with limited card acceptance.
By following these tips, you can ensure a well-planned and memorable European cruise. Remember to be open to new experiences, embrace the local culture, and savor every moment of your journey through the enchanting cities and landscapes of Europe.
A European cruise offers an extraordinary opportunity to explore the rich history, diverse cultures, and stunning landscapes of this remarkable continent. If you’ve ever wanted to dive into the culture of the Vikings or explore what makes people in the Nordic region the so-called happiest on earth, you could do a lot worse than book a Scandinavian cruise.
Scandinavia—and Norway in particular—is an expensive place to travel around, so a cruise can make financial sense for those seeking an introduction to the region. For one price, you get your travel, accommodation, meals, and entertainment covered.
Such a trip offers the opportunity to sample various Scandinavian travel highlights , whether you prefer the Scandinavian capitals, the stunning Norwegian fjords, or soaking up the atmosphere of beautiful islands and historic ports in the Baltic Sea.
Popular Scandinavian Cruise Itineraries
Many different types of itinerary can be advertised as Scandinavian cruises. Typically, they focus on the Nordic capital cities. Some may also include the highlights of the Baltic Sea region, including the Baltic countries and ports in the north of Germany and Poland.
With popular Norwegian fjords cruises together with midnight sun and northern lights tours to the north of Norway also available, there is a lot of diversity in Scandinavian cruises.
Scandinavian Capitals : Cruise itineraries starting in the U.K. or Germany and calling in at two or even all three of Oslo, Stockholm, and Copenhagen have long been popular.

Helsinki is often included on such itineraries. If you want to explore modern Scandinavia while gaining access to some of the region’s best museums, such an itinerary is a perfect choice.
Such itineraries tend to be shorter, and are a great introduction to both cruising and Scandinavia, with limited sea days and plenty to see and do while in port.
Baltic Sea : Longer Scandinavian itineraries often include stops at Baltic Sea islands and ports. The beautiful Estonian capital city, Tallinn, or the Latvian capital, Riga, are particular highlights, as are ports on the northern coastline of Germany and Poland.
For those interested in Viking history, look out for smaller ship itineraries featuring Visby on the wonderful island of Gotland .
One such trip is this 12-night itinerary from Celebrity Cruises, which includes a visit to both Visby and Tallinn. Other highlights include a visit to Stockholm and Copenhagen, including an overnight stop in the latter.
The old city walls of Visby on Gotland island, a popular cruise port.
Norwegian Fjords : By far the most variety can be found in the Norwegian fjords region , with almost all major cruise lines operating at least some itineraries here. Although port calls in Flåm and Geiranger will soon be severely limited, many alternative ports will still be able to welcome some of the world’s largest cruise ships.
Whether you prefer the action-packed ships of Royal Caribbean or MSC, or the smaller ships that can sail along narrower fjords, there will be a Norwegian fjords itinerary for you.
Following the recent rise in popularity of the region as a cruising destination, the fjords season has extended, with trips available as early as April and as late as September.
British line P&O Cruises operates its relatively new megaship Iona in the fjords region for much of that period, with regular departures from Southampton on a popular 7-day itinerary.
Midnight Sun : Although all summer cruises in the region will experience long summer days, specific midnight sun itineraries set sail for the far north of Norway to let guests experience the thrill of being outside with the sun in the sky at midnight. Many of these trips visit Honningsvåg, which allows guests to travel by bus to the North Cape.
Northern Lights : In recent years, Scandinavia—or more specifically Norway—has become a year-round cruising destination thanks to the growth in popularity of northern lights cruises .

These itineraries can be found heading north of the Arctic Circle between October and early April.
Planning Tips For Scandinavian Cruises
Cruising in Northern Europe offers a fantastic variety of excursions and experiences, from historical city tours to adrenaline-filled outdoor adventures.
The region’s love of the outdoors lifestyle means active experiences are easy to find, both through cruise line excursions and independent operators.
The high levels of English comprehension across the region means booking your own activities and exploring ports independently is much easier than in many other parts of the world. Even so, look for independent tours that take place earlier in the day to reduce any time-related risk.
No matter when you visit Scandinavia, pack for all weathers. The height of summer can be marred by heavy rainfall, while it’s possible to get sunburnt in the snow-covered conditions of February and March.
Pack a versatile wardrobe. Layered clothing accommodates the region's variable weather, while specialized gear might be necessary for specific excursions.
Cruising And Sustainability
Prospective travelers should be aware of environmental concerns associated with cruising in this pristine region. The industry is moving towards sustainability, with initiatives to introduce zero-emission vessels in sensitive areas, particularly the UNESCO-listed Norwegian fjords .
Some local initiatives protesting against cruise travel have also gathered momentum, so cruisers should be aware of these issues before setting foot ashore.

Best European Cruises: Discover Underrated Travel Destinations In Europe
Enjoy every bit of europe.
By Robert Schrader | Published on January 4, 2024
Enjoy The Tourist Trail — And Go Off The Beaten Path
E uropean ports like Barcelona, Venice and Santorini are popular for a reason. There's no shame in feeling a thrill as you enter into the Sagrada Família, as you ride a gondola along the Grand Canal or as you watch the sun set into the Aegean behind the iconic white houses of Oia village. The most famous destinations offer so much to see and make for an exciting vacation cruise.
That said, peppering underrated travel destinations into even a European itinerary can take your trip to the next level. For example, you might follow up a couple of days amid the history and nightlife of Berlin with an excursion to Dresden, a city in former East Germany, whose Baroque Zwinger palace is more ornate and opulent than virtually anything in the capital, whose comparative grunginess you'll appreciate by contrast. The same can be said for visiting Bratislava, Slovakia, after Vienna or Brussels after Amsterdam.
This can be an effective strategy for veteran Europe travelers who may take the experience of certain places for granted. If I'm traveling in a smaller country like Portugal, for example, I'll sometimes start in a mainstream city like Lisbon or Porto, and then arrange my trip so it ends there. After exploring smaller cities like Evora and Coimbra, which are admittedly amazing in their own way, the scale of architecture, cuisine and history in established tourist meccas seems all the more impressive.
Now, if you're browsing the best cruises to Europe, there are two basic ways you can try to apply this to your own travels. The first is to select a cruise itinerary that builds both the tourist trail and destinations off the beaten path into its trajectory. For example, you could cruise from Rome to Athens and stop at lesser-known ports like the Greek island (and budding outdoor adventure hub) of Crete and Kusadasi, Turkey, which sits near the ruins of Ephesus.
The other approach is to plan to arrive a few days before your cruise or to stay a few days after your ship returns to port. I generally prefer staying late rather than arriving early, but it's totally up to you. This is particularly effective if you happen to choose a cruise that prioritizes big-ticket destinations. This will leave you curious and energized to discover nearby hidden gems whether they're excursions from the city where you finish up, or somewhere completely far-flung.
See Different Sides Of Spain, France And Italy
Just because a country is well-known doesn't mean every city or region in it is — Spain is a great example of this. After a cruise that ends in Barcelona , for instance, you can travel by train, bus or domestic flight northward to Bilbao, capital of the Basque Country, a Spanish region that has its own language and even its own kind of tapas (known as pinxtos , or "peen-chos"). Here, you can pair a morning in the coastal idyll of San Sebastián with an evening at Bilbao's avant-garde Guggenheim Museum as it lights up for the night.
Another option is to head westward into Andalusia, which was under the control of the Moors for centuries. Today, Andalusian cities like Granada and Seville boast culture, cuisine and even siesta customs that seem of another world entirely. These cities (and others, such as Cadiz and Jerez de la Frontera) have become more popular choices for European vacations in recent years. However, with many more unexplored streets and unseen vistas than Barcelona or Madrid, a visit here can be more satisfying than those cities in some ways.
This is also true in Italy, which is actually a pretty undiscovered country off the main tourist trail. While you can reach the city of Turin (Torino) in under two hours from Milan by high-speed train, what you find there is totally unexpected. After admiring the surreal Mole Antonelliana spire with the Alps towering behind it, you can sit down for a legendary cup of Lavazza, an espresso that originates in the surrounding Piedmont state.
This is just in Italy's north! Many of the best European cruises are now stopping in Naples , a misunderstood city at the foot of Mt. Vesuvius, which is the gateway not only to ancient Pompeii but also to the lush Amalfi Coast. Ditto for Sicilian ports like Palermo and Catania, from which you can easily hop on a train and explore exciting spots like the ruins of Agrigento, the beaches of Cefalù and Taormina, a stunner at the base of Mt. Etna.
France, the world's most-visited country in 2019, is also a hotbed of undiscovered gems, many of them easily accessible. Call in Nice and take a day trip to Marseille, a larger city whose old port will nonetheless make you feel like you're in an 18th-century mystery novel. Or, if you find yourself in northern France, ride a TGV train from Paris to Nantes, where you can rent a car and explore the enchanting small towns of Brittany, including Quiberon and Saint-Malo, as well as the storied Mont-St-Michel monastery.
Don't Sleep On The Balkans
The Balkan peninsula, which sits between Italy and Greece , is one of Europe's most interesting emerging regions. On one hand, you have countries like Croatia and Slovenia, whose popularity among Europeans (and adventurous Americans) has brought them more or less into the travel mainstream. This is true for Croatia in particular, where ports like Split and Dubrovnik are bona fide cruising hubs.
Yet the Balkan region is still full of underrated places to travel, some of which are landlocked. Or almost landlocked like Bosnia, which technically has a small strip of coastline. Bosnia is easy to explore before or after a cruise in Croatia. You can rent a car or ride a bus to the town of Mostar and its famous bridge or to Sarajevo, whose old town seems frozen in the early 20th century when it unwittingly became the scene of the episode that started World War I.
The farther south you go, the fewer tourists you find, even though the scenery gets even more beautiful and the cities more storied. Albania's beaches are so gorgeous, in fact, that the tiny country's coastline has been nicknamed "The Albanian Riviera." Whether amid the crystalline waters of Dhërmi or in Durrës where a Roman amphitheater towers behind the sea, you'll have a hard time remembering that you're not in Italy or Croatia.
Although not as many cruises call there as in the Med, you should also make sure not to forget the Black Sea countries of Romania and Bulgaria. Romania in particular is an eclectic destination. Get off the ship in Constanta then head to Bucharest, Romania's underrated capital or to Brasov, the gateway to Transylvania. You can be in Dracula's (alleged) castle within less than a day of your cruise ending!
Bulgaria has certainly earned its place as one of the most fascinating underrated travel destinations in Europe. Seaside cities like Burgas and Varnas bear so much resemblance to more famous shorelines like Lake Como or Lago Maggiore that they sometimes substitute for them in movies! Further inland, the national capital of Sofia (and the budding tourist capital of Plovdiv) pair pristine Orthodox churches with adventurous restaurant and nightlife scenes.
Europe Holds Many Surprises
It's not surprising that many of the best European cruises (or at least the most popular ones) explore the Mediterranean, Aegean and other warm seas. Many Americans book cruise travel around Thanksgiving or Christmas when cold local weather makes summer in Italy or Greece seem like the only way to go. Even though I empathize with this sentiment, I urge you to consider destinations farther north!
Some of these cruises can call in utterly underrated countries, such as the Baltic States of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. Here, you'll find certain destinations that seem quasi-familiar, such as capital cities like Riga and Tallinn, which almost feel like alternate versions of cities elsewhere in Northern Europe. Others are relatively unprecedented. The sandy beaches along the Curonian Spit near Klaipeda, Lithuania, are so white they almost seem Caribbean, even though the water is so dark and cold it could only be Baltic.
Others are slightly more mainstream, calling in Scandinavian capitals like Helsinki, Stockholm, Copenhagen and Oslo. Or along the west coast of Norway, namely in the city of Bergen, the one from which the country's famous fjords are the most accessible. One of my favorite options from here is to take a few days to fly north, particularly to the city of Tromsø or to the Lofoten Islands. Popular spots for peeping the aurora in winter, these are some of the best exemplars of summer's Midnight Sun.
Keep in mind that while these underrated vacation spots are colder, on the whole, than countries in Southern Europe, they aren't always objectively chilly. This is especially true if you cruise in July or August, when daytime temperatures can reach 80ºF or even higher, even in northern Scandinavia. Coupled with the sun that predominates around this time of year, your "cold country" cruise can feel downright subtropical!
You should also make sure not to forget Northern Europe's island countries. Whether you choose a cruise that calls in Belfast or Reykjavík or rent a car post-cruise and road trip through the Scottish Highlands or around Iceland's Ring Road, the cultures and landscapes that have arisen in Europe's most isolated places are also some of its most unique.
