Tom Cruise's Relationship To Kate Middleton Explained

While the coronation of King Charles III wasn't rife with celebrities, a few notable stars did make an appearance. Some of them left many viewers perplexed about how they secured a spot on the guest list — one of them being Tom Cruise. Cruise's attendance at the May 7 coronation concert celebration for "pre-recorded sketches and segments revealing little-known facts about the king," according to the BBC , wasn't his first interaction with the British royals, however.

The "Top Gun" star actually has a storied past with the royal family, though it seems many Americans have forgotten about it. Cruise, a self-confessed lover of England, has interacted with many members of the royal family throughout the years. He even had quite a friendly relationship with Queen Elizabeth II, who had big plans for him before her death. Despite this, Cruise's relationship with the Prince and Princess of Wales garners the most media attention. Here's the backstory on how Tom Cruise became part of the coronation lineup after making headlines with the princess.

Mission possible?

Tom Cruise's connection with the royals began when he had a somewhat chance encounter with the late Princess Diana. In the early 1990s, the first "Mission: Impossible" was filmed in the U.K., and Princess Di took her two young sons to the set. Allegedly, while the boys were impressed, Princess Diana told her chef, Darren McGrady, not long after the meeting, "That's another one off the list Darren. He's too short!" (via Express ). Nevertheless, the pair would meet again on the red carpet at Cruise's "Far And Away" movie premiere, which he attended with his then-wife Nicole Kidman. Sadly, five years later, Cruise was also present at Princess Diana's funeral.

Princess Diana certainly isn't the only royal lady in his life. Cruise has made public his admiration for the late queen, Elizabeth II, attending her Platinum Jubilee in 2022 and sharing tea with her not long before her death. And, of course, the actor is a known friend of Princess Kate Middleton, securing his infiltration into the ranks of friends of the British royal family with The Sun even reporting that Cruise, Kate, and Prince William can be considered "close." 

In July 2021, Princess Kate and her husband, Prince William, attended the 2020 Euro football match played by Italy and England. Cruise was also a spectator at the match and was photographed kindly letting the royal couple exit their seats before he made his way to the aisle. Almost one year later, Cruise made contact with Kate and William once more.

In 2022, Tom Cruise invited Prince William and Princess Kate to a charity screening of his latest movie, "Top Gun: Maverick." The pair had previously viewed the film when the actor hosted a private screening for the couple on one of the biggest screens in the U.K., an IMAX near London's Leicester Square. He didn't cozy up with them in the theater, but graciously greeted his guests before leaving them to enjoy the film.

Soon after, Cruise and the couple would meet up again at the "Top Gun: Maverick" premiere.  Prince William and Kate Middleton had many swooning at the event , including the man with the starring role. The May 2022 event generated a lot of talk on social media when Cruise courteously lent his hand to Princess Kate as she was attending the stairs. While it may have been chivalrous, it caused many Americans and Brits alike to cringe, as getting handsy with the royal family can always be a thorny issue. One viewer event pointed out, "Her face is mortified" (via Twitter ). Furthermore, sharp-eyed royal watchers quickly pointed out that Kate hurriedly switched her handbag to the hand Cruise had been grasping arguing she may have been trying to ensure the situation wouldn't happen again. 

But all seemed smoothed over when Cruise and Kate met again at the 2022 Wimbledon tennis tournament where they were seated just a few rows apart. Reportedly, the Prince and Princess have since made Tom's Cruise's exclusive Christmas gift list, an honor that is bestowed on invitees for life (via Yahoo! ). So, it doesn't sound like Cruise and the royals will be going their separate ways anytime soon.

Prince William and Kate Middleton have made their red carpet debut at the UK premiere of Top Gun: Maverick .

On Thursday, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge arrived at Leicester Square in London ahead of the film screening, with the duchess opting for an off-the-shoulder black and white gown by Roland Mouret for the occasion.

The duchess wore her hair in a sleek straight style, and accessorised with a black clutch and dangling star statement earrings.

Prince William also opted for a classic look, with the duke joining his wife on the red carpet in a classic blue velvet tuxedo jacket and black bow tie.

The royal couple were joined on the red carpet by Tom Cruise , who helped the duchess up a pair of steps at one point by offering his hand.

While speaking to reporters ahead of the premiere, Cruise also reportedly discussed the similarities he shares with the Duke of Cambridge, according to MyLondon .

“We have a lot in common. We both love England and we’re both aviators, we both love flying,” the actor said.

During the duke and duchess’s first red carpet event of the year, they were also accompanied by John Hamm, Jennifer Connelly and Miles Teller, who plays the son of Cruise’s partner Goose from the original movie.

The royal couple last attended a movie premiere in September, when they were accompanied by Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, at the UK premiere of No Time to Die at the Royal Albert Hall. For the premiere of the James Bond film, the duchess wore a metallic-sequined  Jenny Packham  dress, complete with a sheer cape and structured shoulders.

Kate Middleton and Prince William dressed to impress as they attended the glitzy Top Gun: Maverick premiere in London overnight.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge beamed as they brushed shoulders with Hollywood, having already attended a private screening of the film earlier this year.

William and Kate arrived to cheers from onlookers and the flashes of cameras at the event in London’s Leicester Square on Thursday evening.

And movie star Cruise broke from usual protocol advising members of the public not to touch the royal family, offering Kate a helping hand as she walked the red carpet in her dress and heels.

Kate dazzled in an off-the-shoulder Roland Mouret column gown, with an Alexander McQueen clutch and Robinson Pelham diamond star earrings.

Meanwhile William was decked out in a midnight blue Alexander McQueen velvet dinner jacket and tuxedo trousers.

He also wore Crocket & Jones loafers with “F-18” on them in a nod to the fighter jet flown by Cruise’s character in the film.

The fundraising bash was held in aid of The Film and TV Charity, supporting people working behind the scenes in the UK’s screen sector.

It also marked the first time in 36 years Tom Cruise has slipped out of his shirt and into his aviators as test pilot Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell.

Cruise pulled out all the stops to set up a private screening for Wills and Kate back in March – having heard trained RAF helicopter pilot Wills, 39, was a fan of the original.

He gave them a world-first ­preview of the sequel, along with Sophie Wessex, 57, Princesses Eugenie, 32, and Princess Beatrice, 33, at one of the country’s biggest IMAX screens.

Maverick , which has so far received rave reviews from critics , sees Hollywood star Cruise reprise the role of US naval aviator Pete Mitchell and is being released 36 years after the 1986 original.

It was originally due for release in July 2019 but was repeatedly pushed back due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Tom Cruise made a dramatic entrance at the US premiere of the film, landing a helicopter on an aircraft carrier in San Diego, California.

And on Sunday, he joined the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, in which he introduced the King’s Troop, Royal Horse Artillery.

The actor said: “(The Queen) is a woman that I greatly admire, what she has accomplished has been historic.

“She has met presidents, world leaders, people from all walks of life.

“I just remember always as a kid seeing photos of her. I came to England, started making movies here in 1982, started producing here because I liked the crews. I loved the history.

“I have great respect for her, so when they asked (whether he would attend the platinum celebrations) I said yes immediately.”

LONDON (AP) — Tom Cruise has said he and Prince William “have a lot in common” as Britain’s royals joined the Hollywood star on the red carpet in London for the U.K. premiere of the new “Top Gun” movie.

William and his wife, Kate, joined Cruise Thursday on a star-studded red carpet at Leicester Square for the premiere of “Top Gun: Maverick,” in which Cruise reprises his role as U.S. Navy pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell more than three decades after the release of the original film.

Speaking about William, Cruise told reporters: “We have a lot in common. We both love England, and we’re both aviators, we both love flying.”

William trained as a search and rescue pilot and was known as Flight Lieutenant Wales in the Royal Air Force.

Cruise was seen introducing William and Kate to the film’s cast members — including Jennifer Connelly and Jon Hamm — in front of a model of the fighter jet from the movie.

It was originally due for release in July 2019, but was repeatedly pushed back due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“After the last couple of years, just to have an event like this is extraordinary,” Cruise said.

The actor was among celebrities who featured in an equestrian extravaganza on Sunday to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee, or 70 years on the throne.

The Duchess of Cambridge Steals the Show at the Top Gun: Maverick Premiere in London

Forget Maverick and Goose, Kate Middleton had the ultimate wingman at the London premiere of Top Gun: Maverick tonight: her Roland Mouret gown. The royal stole the show at UK premiere of the blockbuster sequel, which sees Tom Cruise reprise his most famous role 36 years on. Kate and her husband Prince William joined stars including Cruise, Jennifer Connelly and Val Kilmer on the red carpet in Leicester Square.

Though she’s famously happiest in her girl-next-door wardrobe of jeans, Barbour jackets and flat Penelope Chilvers boots, Kate—like any seasoned royal—knows how to ramp up the glamour when the occasion calls for it. She out-sparkled every A-lister at the No Time to Die premiere last September, wearing a gold Jenny Packham gown embellished with enough sequins to light up the Royal Albert Hall. 

To attend the 2017 BAFTAs, the Duchess chose an off-the-shoulder black gown with delicate floral embellishment by perhaps her favorite luxury fashion house, Alexander McQueen. Two years later, Kate had the dress altered, adding demure cap sleeves for a gala at the National Portrait Gallery. It was a statement of intent for the royal, who is increasingly conscious with her fashion choices, as evidenced by her growing appetite for vintage . 

As the president of BAFTA, Prince William has a keen interest in film, but it could be that the ’80s classic Top Gun holds a special place in the heart of the Duke, who is, after all, a trained pilot. William spent three years leading search and rescue missions out of RAF Valley on Anglesey when he and Kate lived there as newlyweds, before serving as a pilot in the East Anglia Air Ambulance for a further two years. It’s not quite flying a fighter jet in a 4G inverted dive, but it’s impressive nonetheless.

But it won't be the first time the Cambridges see the film. In April 2022, star Tom Cruise apparently hosted a special screening at an IMAX cinema near London’s Leicester Square for Prince William, Kate Middleton, Sophie Wessex, Princess Eugenie, and Princess Beatrice.

The Cambridges are no strangers to red carpet events. Prince William has been the president of the BAFTAs since 2010, a role he took over from his grandfather Prince Philip, and in that capacity, he has attended numerous film premieres over the years. Most recently, the Cambridges attended the world premiere of No Time to Die , the newest James Bond movie and the last starring Daniel Craig, in September 2021.

Earlier this month, he confirmed that costar Val Kilmer also returned for the new film: “I really rallied hard for him to make the movie,” the Vanilla Sky actor told Entertainment Tonight about the cameo. “ The kind of talent that he has , and you see that scene [with him in it], it’s very special. It’s just very special.”

Tom Cruise was snapped at the London premiere of “Top Gun: Maverick” helping Kate Middleton up a set of stairs at Leicester Square.

The actor wore a striking black tux while walking the red carpet alongside both the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. As they approached a set of stairs, Cruise, 59, offered his hand to Middleton, who wore a Roland Mouret column dress and black Prada heels.

He then escorted the royal up the steps as Prince William walked alongside, seemingly adjusting his jacket and tie.

Once back on level ground, the “Mission: Impossible” actor introduced the future king and queen to co-stars Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm and Miles Teller. 

Many observers took to Twitter in praise of the gentlemanly move.

“Tom is so lovely. Always the gentleman,” wrote one fan, with another posting , “I Dont care for, or about Tom Cruise’s religious beliefs , but i will say this, he is always a Gentleman and never forgets for a second how to behave in public.”

A third fan added , “Bless Tom Cruise. He looks like he takes everything he does so seriously, including escorting the Duchess up the stairs. I think William is struggling to hold it together 😅.”

Yahoo UK ‘s royal executive editor Omid Scobie also addressed viewers questioning if Cruise is technically allowed to touch a member of the royal family, writing, “There are no official rules when it comes to touching a member of the Royal Family. It’s more down to what’s acceptable in society or not. I think there are a lot of things that are perceived as royal etiquette or royal protocol that we assume might be the case but aren’t actually.”

“It could have been far worse,” he added. “The worst would be for her to trip downstairs at a royal film premiere.”

The premiere was hosted by Paramount Pictures and The Film and TV Charity, which supports professionals in Britain’s film and television industry. The screening marks the 72nd Royal Film Performance put on by the charity in its nearly 100-year history, People reports.

Tom Cruise is a father-of-three and on April 18th, his youngest daughter  Suri Cruise turned 18. 

The Mission Impossible star shares Suri with his ex-wife, Katie Holmes , and the birthday girl was pictured looking happy as she walked around New York City with a friend, while clutching onto a birthday present. 

Suri is thought to have celebrated more over the weekend with her mom, while Tom was pictured in London at another milestone birthday party. 

Tom was one of the many celebrity guests at Victoria Beckham's 50th birthday , which was held at Oswald's. 

Other well-known faces in attendance included Eva Longoria, Salma Hayek and Marc Anthony. The Spice Girls also reunited, with Emma Bunton, Geri Horner, Mel B and Mel C posing with the birthday girl. 

Tom was all smiles in a number of photos posted on the night, looking smart in a tuxedo. As well as Suri, Tom is also father to adopted grown-up children, Isabella 'Bella', 31, and Connor, 29, who he shares with ex-wife Nicole Kidman.

Bella lives in London and has a close relationship with her dad, having been spotted out showing her support for him on numerous occasions by wearing various Top Gun T-shirts, a nod to her dad's film. 

None of Tom's children have spoken out about their relationship with their dad in recent years and the actor is incredibly private when it comes to his personal life. 

When Suri was younger, however, she was in the public eye a lot more. She was born in Los Angeles where she was raised for the first few years of her life, before her parents' separation in 2012. She then relocated with her mom Katie to New York City. 

Katie has raised Suri to be incredibly down-to-earth and the pair have a close relationship. It's clear that Suri has developed her parents' talents for performing, and showcased her incredible singing voice back in 2022. 

Suri was heard singing the opening credits of Katie's film, Alone Together, when she was just 15. She sang a pitch-perfect rendition of Blue Moon, and her mom was more than proud. 

Chatting to Yahoo! Entertainment about her daughter's role in the movie, she said: "She's very, very talented. She said she would do it and she recorded it and I let her do her thing. "That's the way I direct in general: It's like, 'This is what I think we all want - go do your thing'." 

The mom-of-one was asked why she chose Suri for the job and she said: "I always want the highest level of talent, so I asked her." 

In 2022, Katie gave another rare snippet into her relationship with Suri, telling InStyle: "I love her so much. My biggest goal has always been to nurture her into her individuality. To make sure she is 100 per cent herself and strong, confident, and able. And to know it."

It was a risky business. 

Tom Cruise, 61, reportedly stole the show with agile dance moves at Victoria Beckham’s 50th birthday bash, which happened in London on Saturday night. 

Cruise has reportedly been friends with Beckham and her husband, Inter Miami CF President David Beckham, 48, for two decades, and the “Mission: Impossible” star did a breakdance routine that wowed the A-list crowd. 

After a formal dinner at the private members club Oswald’s, over 100 guests hit the dance floor, where Cruise stunned guests.

There were no cameras allowed, but a source told the Daily Mail about the “Risky Business” star’s antics, “People were absolutely dumbfounded.” 

Other celeb guests included Gordon Ramsay, Eva Longoria, Salma Hayek, Jason Statham and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Guy Ritchie and all of the Beckham’s fellow former Spice Girls: Melanie “Mel B” Brown, Melanie “Mel C” Chisholm, Emma Bunton and Geri Halliwell.

Cruise wasn’t the only dance star of the night — since all of the former Spice Girls reunited and did an impromptu performance of their 1997 single “Stop.” 

They busted out their signature dance moves from the iconic music video , as seen in footage shared by David Beckham via Instagram on Saturday.

“I mean come on x,” the retired soccer star captioned his post, tagging all five of the ladies and adding a series of heart emojis.

Fans quickly took to the comments section to weigh in on the epic moment, writing things like, “Is this the teaser for the reunion? Cause I’m here for it,” “Tour WHEN,” “We are all UNWELL” and “Thank you @davidbeckham for doing the lord’s work!”

Victoria re-shared the clip to her own page, calling her birthday soiree the “best night” ever. “Happy Birthday to me!” the fashion designer added. “I love you all so much! #SpiceUpYourLife.”

Victoria dressed to impress in a mint-green sleeveless gown with sparkling silver and gold bracelets on each wrist.

She accessorized with crutches , for her broken foot — a workout injury from February. But she was all smiles celebrating with famous pals, David and their four kids, Brooklyn, 25, Romeo, 21, Cruz, 19, and Harper, 12.

Notably, Brooklyn’s wife, Nicola Peltz Beckham, 29, didn’t attend her mother-in-law’s party. 

She’s rumored to have a rocky relationship with Victoria, as they were allegedly feuding ahead of Peltz’s marriage to Brooklyn in April 2022.

“They can’t stand each other and don’t talk,” an insider close to the family previously told Page Six. “The build-up to the wedding was horrendous.”

Brooklyn has denied the rumors about an unhappy rapport between his wife and mom, telling Variety, “I’ve learned they’re always going to try to write stuff like that. They’re always going to try and put people down. But everyone gets along, which is good.” 

Victoria’s daughter-in-law took to her Instagram Story Saturday to share that she skipped out on the bash to spend time with her grandmother. 

“Happy Birthday to my beautiful MIL @victoriabeckham. I’m so sad I’m not there to celebrate you and hug you! Sending all my love from me and Naunni,” she said. 

Unfortunately, unlike the Spice Girls, party attendees have not posted footage of Cruise dancing, perhaps deciding that it’s too much of a risky business.

Kate Middleton is back for some more tennis thrills — alongside Tom Cruise !

The Duchess of Cambridge, 40, returned to Wimbledon on Saturday for the women's finals between Tunisia's Ons Jabeur and Kazakhstan's Elena Rybakina, where she was seated a few rows in front of the Top Gun: Maverick star, 60.

Kate, an avid tennis player (she and Prince William have a court at their country home of Anmer Hall), is patron of the All England Lawn Tennis Club, and typically watches matches from the Royal Box.

For the daytime outing, the British royal wore a vibrant yellow dress, which she accessorized with a pair of large sunglasses. Cruise, meanwhile, looked dapper in a blue suit and white dress shirt, attire he paired with a light blue tie.

During Saturday's match, Rybakina, 23, won her first Grand Slam title and lifted the Venus Rosewater dish at Wimbledon after beating Jabeur, 27.

Kate previously attended the women's final last year, where she presented winner Ashleigh Barty of Australia with the trophy.

It will be an exciting weekend for the sports-loving Kate as she plans to return to Wimbledon on Sunday with Prince William , 40, to see the finals for the men.

The mother of three made her 2022 debut at the tennis tournament on Tuesday alongside Prince William . The two got animated at points as they watched the men's singles quarterfinal match between Novak Djokovic of Serbia and Jannik Sinner of Italy, as well as the U.K.'s Cameron Norrie take on David Goffin of Belgium.

Kate also made sure to acknowledge a few familiar faces in the stands: her parents, Carole and Michael Middleton. Seated a few rows away, Kate sweetly blew them a kiss and waved just after she took her front-row seat.

Kate wore a blue and white polka dot belted dress by Alessandra Rich, which she previously wore to a Jubilee Big Lunch event just last month. The recycled ensemble was likely a nod to the sustainable theme at the prestigious tennis tournament.

This year, Ralph Lauren redesigned the uniforms for chair umpires, line umpires and ball boys and girls in partnership with The All England Lawn Tennis Club to embrace more sustainable and innovative fabrics using recycled materials.

Kate accessorized her outfit with a few more recycled items from her royal closet, including her Finlay Henrietta sunglasses, recently worn on tour in the Bahamas , and her Mulberry Amberley bag in white, which she has used numerous times before.

And the finishing touch was a green and purple bow tie pin, signifying her status as patron of the All England Lawn Tennis Club. The club's official colors are dark green and purple, and only a few select people — including the club's president, the committee of management, vice presidents and four members of executive staff — are permitted to wear the bow.

"It's her first state visit so it is a big milestone," Dutch royal journalist, Annemarie de Kunder, of RTL Boulevard told  HELLO! . "And we weren't expecting her to attend. 

"But Felipe and Letizia are good friends with Willem-Alexander and Maxima. Amalia also speaks Spanish, so this is a good one to ease her into. It's a fairly casual way of introducing her to a state visit, to see how everything works, what the protocol is, and I think this is a very good one for her to start with, because she's going to be attending these for the rest of her life."

Amalia is currently studying politics, psychology, law, and economics at the University of Amsterdam and it sounds like her degree is her priority for now.

"Maxima and Willem-Alexander don't push her to do things," Annemarie said. "They let her do things in her own time and space, so when you see her at events like the upcoming state visit or the Jordanian royal wedding last year, it's because she wants to be there. Those are things that she likes doing."

Earlier this year, the princess moved back to Amsterdam. She had started her university life living in student accommodation in autumn 2022, however, after she became the victim of kidnap threats and her safety became a major security risk, she moved back home to her parents' residence in The Hague, the Huis Ten Bosch palace.

Amalia would only leave the house to travel to lectures, about an hour's drive away, effectively limiting her exposure to a normal student experience.

"It was looking like she was going to live in Amsterdam, she was going to study as normal, she had started going out to parties," Annemarie said. "So everyone thought she was going to have a normal life, but then in a split second, everything changed and she had to live with her parents again and she couldn't go out with other students. 

"It took an enormous toll on her and the whole family, of course. We know that she talks to her family, but that she also has professional help when she needs it, when it becomes too much for her."
