Pro Tour Returns! Re-Ignite Your Store's Competitive Play

Prepare to host qualifier events at your store and get a rundown of the upcoming competitive season.

Get ready—the return of competitive play is here! Regardless of your players' experience level within the community, you can encourage them all to get involved with a local qualifier at your local store, kick-starting their journey toward the Magic: The Gathering World Championship.

Depending on your region, WPN Premium stores may have access to perks, such as additional Regional Championship invitations or larger promo allocations. Please check with your regional organizer for specific information.

Today we'll be discussing the four levels of tabletop play: local qualifiers, Regional Championships, Pro Tours, and finally, the Magic: The Gathering World Championship.

Regional Championship Qualifiers

Regional tournament organizers will be working with you directly to schedule Regional Championship Qualifier events at your store through Wizards EventLink . This offers more flexibility in planning the events, for regional organizers and players.

Your Regional Tournament Organizer will sell and distribute your qualifier kit, set your event date and be your first point of contact.

Encourage your players to bookmark these organizers’ websites, too—they'll serve as information hubs for qualifying and finals events in each region:

  • USA - Dreamhack
  • Canada - Face to Face
  • Europe - Legacy
  • Australia/New Zealand - Good Games
  • China - Beijing Kadou Culture
  • Japan/Korea - Big Magic
  • Southeast Asia - Oracle Events
  • Taiwan - GameSquare
  • Brazil - City Class Games
  • Mexico/Central America/Caribbean - Yellow Rabbit
  • South America - Magicsur

If you haven't run a large-scale tournament yourself, or it's been a long time and you'd like additional support, you may look to Judge Academy to assist you in connecting with an official Magic: The Gathering judge to help with your event.

By signing up for these events through your regional organizer, you'll receive Promos to celebrate at the local and regional level while supplies last!

The Regional Championship Qualifier Promos, as well as their usage, are as follows:

  • Lava Spike: Nonfoil for participating in local qualifiers. Foil for participating in larger local qualifiers and side events at Regional Finals.
  • Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx: Nonfoil for top finishers at local qualifying events. Foil for the winners of local qualifiers.*

*Please note that kits for multi-slot qualifiers will have a foil Nykthos for each invitation slot, not purely for the winner.

Again, all Promos are available in limited quantities while supplies last. With any questions regarding the exact breakdown of promo prize support, contact your regional organizer.

Regional Championships

Regional Championship details will differ based on each individual region, though the first Regional Championship will be held in late 2022. The number of invites to the Pro Tour awarded, prizes, and any additional information will be communicated for each region by the regional organizer noted above.

Players from the following categories will receive invites to the Regional Championships:

  • Regional Championship Qualifier Winners
  • Players qualified for the next Pro Tour
  • MTGO Qualifiers
  • MTG Arena Qualifiers

In addition, members of the MPL/Rivals from 2021–22 and the Top 16 (not already invited) Challengers from 2022 Worlds Standings will be invited to the first three Regional Championships.

The Promo for Regional Championship is as follows:

  • Teferi, Hero of Dominaria: Nonfoil for participants and foil for top finishers.

Three times a year, top finishers from the Regional Championships will compete for their share of $500,000 in prizes, an invite to the World Championship, and bragging rights as they claim their place as the best in their region.

Pro Tours will be held in the United States in 2023. While we are mindful of the fluctuating state of international travel, we are hoping to expand outside of the U.S. as soon as we can. The location of each Pro Tour will be announced closer to each event's date.

Magic: The Gathering World Championship

This event will be held later in 2023, in the United States, where approximately 128 players will play for the featured prize pool of $1 million. The exact breakdown by place will be published closer to the event.

While the state of international travel is always in flux, we hope that the World Championships will be held in person.

We've prepared an FAQ to answer some of the questions you may have , and we will share more information about these events as it becomes relevant. You may also reference more details on the Magic website to help answer any questions your players have.

The first local qualifiers will begin July 2 and will be run using Pioneer, Modern, Sealed Deck, or Standard formats. Schedule practice events early to give your players ample time and space to prepare their decks and practice ahead of time.

Plus, the competition has been made more accessible than ever, as players can qualify through digital play using Magic: The Gathering Arena or Magic: The Gathering Online . Please remember that for tabletop events, players must be 13 years or older with parental permission, or 18 years or older without. For digital events, all players must be 18 years or older (no exceptions).

The return of competitive play is bound to be an exciting time for your community—make sure you start planning and contact your Regional Organizer noted above to join.

Day 1 [ | ]

Like the previous year, the changes to Worlds produced two more novelties; more than 100 players (105), and the first Standard ever with nine sets. Incidentally, the metagame resulted in Esper being the top deck again with 34 decks over three archetypes; with Fable of the Mirror-Breaker and Invoke Despair banned and strong manabases, there were fewer incentives for Red and two-color Black. Mono-Red Aggro became a contender for the first time in years, at the second place with 10 pilots. A quarter of the field registered decks with fewer than four pilots. Jitse Goutbeek was the last player to have won all their matches, losing the last match of the day to Anthony Lee, piloting Golgari Midrange, who had a draw on his record. [7]

Day 2 [ | ]

Fifty players who had earned at least four match wins returned for Day 2. The decreased match clock from 60 to 50 minutes showed a significant impact, with a significant portion of games on camera going to turns and at least three were concessions in a drawn game. Reid Duke was the first to lock up the 10 wins, followed by Simon Nielsen in Round 12 and Kazune Kosaka in Round 13. Along the wayside, all other potential winners of Player of the Year fell from competition. In the final round, Willy Edel defeated Kenji Sugo, Lorenzo Terlizzi defeated Ken Takahama, Gregory Orange defeated Cain Rianhard and Jean-Emmanuel Depraz defeated Matt Foreman. At 28 points, Alexei Paulot drew with Anthony Lee, of which Lee got the last spot. [8]

Top 8 [ | ]

In the Top 8, Duke fell in the quarterfinals, yielding the Player of the Year title to Nielsen. Three midrange decks defeated their more polarized opponents, and Nielsen's defeat of Esper Midrange was undone against Kosaka. [9] Finalist Depraz claimed his trophy this time around with Esper Legends. [10]

MTGO PREMIER PLAY SEASONS

The MTGO Premier Play Program splits the year into seasons of roughly seventeen weeks each. During each season, you'll earn Qualifier Points which can be used to join Qualifiers, Super Qualifiers, and Champions Showcase events. At the end of the season, we'll reset the Qualifier Points in players' accounts (right after the final Last Chance event fires) and then start the next season.

Regional Championship qualifying rounds are asynchronous to MOCS seasons - Qualifiers and Super Qualifiers always accept only Qualifier Points from the current MOCS season

WHAT ARE QUALIFIER POINTS & LEADERBOARD POINTS?

Leagues & Queues Preliminaries & Challenges – Weekly Schedule

During each Premier Play season, players will earn Qualifier Points (QPs) by performing well in various Magic Online events. The number of QPs earned will vary by event and finish as indicated by the various event types described below.

Players can use accumulated QPs to enter various Premier Play events over the course of the Premier Play Season as described in the Using Qualifier Points section below.

Here is the full list of ways to earn QPs:

Additionally, the Top 8 finishers of certain events that include playoff rounds will earn Leaderboard Points. At the end of the season, the Top 2 players on the Leaderboard score invitations to MTGO's top event—the Champions Showcase—plus a seat at an upcoming Pro Tour. Check out the MOCS Leaderboard page for full details.

THE MAGIC ONLINE CHAMPIONS SHOWCASE

Players looking to prove their mettle against the best players in Magic Online will want to use their QPs to enter Magic Online Champions Showcase (MOCS) events. MOCS is a set of linked tournaments designed to highlight the game's best players each season, culminating in the Champions Showcase and its large cash prize pool and two invitations to the World Championship.

NOTE : Once a player wins an invitation to a Season's Showcase, that player is prohibited from competing in further MOCS events feeding that Showcase.

THE MOCS PATH

STEP 1 – Showcase Challenges & Last Chance Events STEP 2 – Showcase Qualifiers FINAL STEPS – Showcase Opens & MOCS Leaderboard (This Page) DESTINATION – Champions Showcase Event

Champions Showcase Event

The signature event of each Season is the Magic Online Champions Showcase. This 8-player online event pits the top competitors of the season against each other for their share of a large cash prize pool and the title of Showcase Champion. In addition, the top two finishers earn a seat at the World Championship!

The competitors include:

  • The winner of each of the four Showcase Qualifiers
  • The winner of each of the two Showcase Opens
  • The two Leaderboard invitees

The date of the Showcase and the formats it will use will be announced at least one month before the event.

NOTE : Because Champions Showcase events are held online, players who have earned an invitation must be able to connect to the internet for the duration of the event, demonstrate their connectivity prior to the event, and verify they can stream matches for the coverage team. Players who cannot commit to or demonstrate these requirements may be disqualified and have their invitation transferred to another competitor.

The prize table for the 2024 Season 1 Showcase is:

Prizes for 2024 Season 2 & 3 Showcases are variable based on number of wins in each pod

Prizes are cumulative - for example, a pod winner earns $7,500 for that pod.

Should one player win both pods, that player earns the Championship Round award without needing to play the match. The second World Championship invitation would then be awarded via pre-announced tiebreak procedures (usually via a playoff match) .

GENERAL EVENT RULES

Scheduling and Structure

Daybreak reserves the right to add, remove, modify, reschedule, and/or delete any tournament for any reason, including without limitation, if in its sole judgment, that tournament's integrity has been compromised by an unforeseen technical issue and/or error in that tournament's administration.

Note that before, during, or after a season, Daybreak reserves the right to adjust, change, or remove the method or rate at which QPs are distributed. Any changes will be announced at least one week prior to the change on MTGO.com .

Entry and Invitations

For all events that require Qualifier Points or an invitation to enter: if a player believes they should be able to enter the event and cannot, it is their responsibility to contact Customer Support before the event begins (see the Connectivity and Other Event Problems section below). Once the event begins, players cannot be added to the event.

Players who earn a Regional Championship invitation, Pro Tour invitation, or Magic Online Champions Showcase invitation from a Magic Online event will be contacted via the email account associated with their Magic Online account by a Daybreak representative within 72 hours of the qualifying event to verify account information and coordinate the invitation. If you plan on playing in the MTGO Premier Play Program, please ensure that your account information is correct.

Players who are already invited to a Regional Championship fed by a Qualifier or Super Qualifier are eligible to compete in further events feeding that Championship. If a player would earn a redundant invitation to a Regional Championship, Pro Tour, or World Championship via a Magic Online event, that invitation may pass down as indicated in the Prizes section below.

For all Seasons, players who have already earned a Magic Online Champions Showcase Invitation are not eligible to participate in further qualification events for that Magic Online Premier Play Season's Champions Showcase.

LEGAL INFORMATION

Magic Online Premier Play Eligibility

For these eligibility rules, Magic Online Premier Play is defined as any Magic Online tournament or event whose prize structure includes one or more invitations to a  Magic Online Champions Showcase event, tabletop Regional Championship, tabletop Pro Tour, or World Championship event, or another tournament or event that is deemed to be part of the Magic Online Premier Play system.

All Magic Online players who meet the eligibility requirements set forth herein are eligible to compete in Magic Online Premier Play except (a) players who are otherwise ineligible to engage in tournament play pursuant to the Magic Online User Agreement and (b) employees and their immediate family members, or contractors of Daybreak Game Company LLC (“Daybreak”), Wizards of the Coast LLC ("Wizards"), Hasbro, Inc. ("Hasbro"), or each of their respective subsidiaries or affiliates or their advertising or promotion agencies, or those who have been disqualified for other reasons (see below). This is a skill-based tournament based on a player's ability to defeat other players.

Players must be Magic Online account holders in good standing and in compliance with the Magic Online User Agreement in order to participate in Magic Online Premier Play. Players may be disqualified from Premier Play (including the Magic Online Champions Showcase and/or Regional Championship events) if they are suspended from Magic Online for any reason, including without limitation, a violation of the Magic Online User Agreement.

To be eligible to participate in Magic Online Premier Play, the following requirements must be met:

  • Players must be at least 18 years of age to qualify for the Magic Online Champions Showcase, Magic: The Gathering Championships, or other related Premier Play. If a player under the age of 18 would earn prizes that include an invitation for one of these events, the invitation will pass down to the next eligible player as described in the Prizes section below.
  • Players must have internet access.
  • Players must have access to a personal computer.
  • Players acknowledge and agree that Daybreak will share player information with Wizards of the Coast LLC for players who earn invitations to in-person events or earn cash prizes.

Invitations to the Championship (including those awarded by participation in tournaments) are governed by the Magic: The Gathering Premier Event Invitation Policy except as stated in the Prize section below.

Because the Magic Online Champions Showcase event is held online, players who have earned an invitation must be able to connect to the internet for the duration of the event, demonstrate their connectivity prior to the event, and verify they can stream matches for the coverage team. Players who cannot commit to or demonstrate these requirements may be disqualified and have their invitation passed down to another competitor as indicated in the Prizes section below.

Players who compete in Qualifiers or Magic Online Premier Play events in violation of these rules will be subject to appropriate penalties, up to and including suspension.

Although players may have multiple accounts qualified for a Magic Online Champions Showcase event, players are not permitted to have more than one of their accounts entered in any single Scheduled Event at one time. Players are not permitted to have any accounts entered in events played by other players for any reason. If a player is discovered to have more than one account playing in a Magic Online Champions Showcase event or Qualifier/Super Qualifier event before, during, or after the event, Daybreak may take action against that player's account(s), up to and including disqualification with no refund of product and/or event tickets, suspension of the offending account(s), and/or termination of the offending account(s). Using an account other than your own, allowing any other player to use your account, selling your account, and other similar actions are all violations of the Magic Online User Agreement. If you play in Magic Online tournaments, win, and expect to get your prize, be absolutely certain you are playing on your own account. We do not recognize excuses, such as "I and a friend jointly own the account," "It's my brother's account but he gave it to me," or similar. The only exception is an adult may authorize a single dependent child age thirteen to seventeen to play on an account that the adult has established.

Daybreak reserves the right to reschedule and/or restart tournaments, matches, extend timers and/or games as needed. Such decisions will be announced on the Magic Online website, via @MagicOnline on Twitter, and/or within the Magic Online client as needed.

All prizes are awarded "AS IS" and WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, express or implied, (including, without limitation, any implied warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose). This is a game of skill and, therefore, there are no odds of winning as is the case with a game of chance. All applicable taxes, fees, duties, tariffs, passport or visa costs, and any license, destination, entry, exit and/or delivery charges are the sole responsibility of each player, and players acknowledge Daybreak’s recommendation that they consult a tax advisor in their jurisdiction for questions regarding their tax liabilities.

If a player wins that is later deemed ineligible to earn prizes in sanctioned tournaments (such as he or she is suspended under the age of eighteen and/or a paid contractor) or if a player would receive a redundant invitation due to being already qualified (via an MTG Arena event or previous Magic Online event), then any invitations earned ( Magic Online Champions Showcase, Regional Championship, Pro Tour, World Championship event, or otherwise) will pass down to the player with the next best finish in that event. The final Swiss standings of the tournament will determine the difference between third and fourth place and the difference between fifth through eighth place, should that be necessary.

Exception: For Regional Championships (RC), if a player would earn a redundant invite from Magic Online and the source of that player's existing invitation is:

  • Through being invited to the Pro Tour the RC feeds or via a top finish in a previous Magic Online event feeding that RC, the redundant MTGO invitation passes down to the next-highest uninvited finisher.
  • Through a top finish in an MTG Arena qualifying event or via any tabletop event feeding the RC, the redundant MTGO invitation does not pass down.

In any of the above cases, digital prizes will not pass down to the next player.

Daybreak may modify, suspend, and/or cancel an event, substitute prizes, or change the costs and/or schedule for an event without notice, at its sole discretion.

Event Integrity

If, in the sole judgment of Daybreak and its representatives, a system error, tournament or rules bug, or other issue has significantly compromised the integrity of the event, Daybreak retains the right to modify the tournament structure as needed to maintain as fair and competitive an experience as possible for all players.

Occasionally while playing Magic Online , Daybreak staff (marked by purple text in their online name in Chat) may ask players for their name and/or contact information. Failure to provide accurate information may result in significant penalties, up to and including disqualification with no refund of product and/or event tickets, suspension of the offending account(s), and/or termination of the offending account(s).

Do not give out your information to anyone who is not Daybreak Staff. Daybreak staff members will never ask for your password.

Legal Information

Release: By entering (or consenting to the entry of a person under the age of eighteen) a Magic Online Premier Play season, each participant (or the participant's parent or legal guardian, if the participant is under the age of eighteen) and the winner (or the winner's parent or legal guardian, if the winner is under the age of eighteen) thereby release Daybreak and its parent companies, subsidiaries, affiliates, directors, officers, employees, and agencies from any liability whatsoever and waive any and all causes of action related to any claims, costs, injuries, losses, or damages of any kind arising out of or in connection with Magic Online Premier Play or delivery, misdelivery, acceptance, possession, or use of or inability to use any prize (including, without limitation to, claims, costs, injuries, losses, and damages related to personal injuries, death, damage to or destruction of property, rights of publicity or privacy, defamation, or portrayal in a false light, whether intentional or unintentional), whether under a theory of contract, tort (including negligence), warranty, or other theory. All of Daybreak’s decisions regarding the application and interpretation of the rules are final.

Disclaimer of Liability; Certain Risks

Participation in Magic Online Premier Play is void where restricted, taxed or prohibited by law.

Here's the prize money payout for each golfer at the 2024 Corales Puntacana Championship

B illy Horschel jumped out to an early scorching start with four birdies on the first five holes Sunday to quickly take the lead, one he would never relinquish. Horschel then added another four birdies and an eagle to his scorecard to shoot a final-round 63 and win the Corales Puntacana Championship for his eighth PGA Tour title. The 63 also matched a course record at the Corales course at Puntacana Resort in the Dominican Republic.

Horschel, 37, followed 67-69 with 66-63 over the weekend to end at 23-under-total, two shots ahead of Wesley Bryan, who was looking to go wire-to-wire while playing on a sponsor exemption this week. It was his best finish on tour since 2017.

This marks the sixth time in the previous seven playings of the event that the winner has been in his 30s. Horschel also earned $720,000 from the overall $4 million purse. Bryan earned $436,000.

For Horschel, it was his first victory since the Memorial in 2022, where he topped Aaron Wise by four shots that week.

"This game of golf's so fickle, I think you can put a lot into it and get everything you want out of it," Horschel said. "But I knew in my 14 years, 13 years previously on the PGA Tour that I had the ability, I had the talent, I just needed to continue to work hard and do the right things and continue to believe that good stuff was going to come to the forefront at some point in time."

Horschel was asked about winning an opposite field event for the first time in his career. He was not in the signature events as he finished last season ranked No. 90 in FedEx Cup standings. He entered this week ranked 83rd in the World Ranking, having missed the cut at his last start, the Valero Texas Open two weeks ago.

"The PGA Tour has a lot of tournaments and it's tough for every tournament to get their due," he said. "Opposite field events have been crucial for a lot of players coming up the ranks. Look at Tony Finau, Viktor Hovland winning in Puerto Rico, Matt Wallace won this. So listen, it's another opportunity to play, it's another opportunity to become a better player, to get that win on the PGA Tour.

Also of note, twin brothers Parker and Pierceson Coody both finished inside the top 20. Parker opened with a first-round 66 and ended tied for sixth place at 16 under par. Pierceson opened with consecutive rounds of 67 and tied for 18th place at 12 under par, four shots behind his brother.

Here’s the prize money payout for each golfer who made the cut.

2024 RBC Heritage purse, prize money: Payout for Scottie Scheffler, golfers from $20M signature event pool

Another signature event means another big winner's check was up for grabs in south carolina.

rbc-heritage-trophy-2023-g.png

Another week, another monstrous purse on the PGA Tour (taken home by Scottie Scheffler). The first signature event to be played following the 2024 Masters took place in Hilton Head, South Carolina, with the RBC Heritage hosting the best golfers on Tour -- and the best golfer in the world came out on top once again

With $20 million on the line in totality, Scottie Scheffler won for the fourth time in his last five starts , cashing a cool $3.6 million winner's share.

There was not a cut in place this week, so everyone in the field was guaranteed at least $41,000 no matter how many crooked numbers they posted. This is the new way of life for Tour pros as this is one of eight big-money signature events, only three of which have a cut.

Your first four winners from signature events this season ...

  • The Sentry: Chris Kirk ($3.6 million)
  • Pebble Beach Pro Am: Wyndham Clark ($3.6 million)
  • Genesis Invitational: Hideki Matsuyama ($4 million)
  • Arnold Palmer Invitational: Scottie Scheffler ($4 million)
  • RBC Heritage: Scottie Scheffler ($3.6 million)

Scheffler has now won $16.25 million over his last five starts, including $3.6 million for taking the 2024 Masters, $4.5 million for winning The Players Championship and $554,000 for finishing second at the Houston Open.

The Wells Fargo Championship, Memorial and Travelers Championship will round out the eight signature events for 2024. Only the Memorial will have a cut. Add it all up, and there is nearly $200 million at stake between those eight tournaments plus The Players Championship, which Scheffler won in early March.

Let's take a look at the payout list for the 2024 RBC Heritage for the 69 players who are playing this event.
