Understanding the Different Types of Credit Card Transactions

When it comes to using your credit card, there are several different types of transactions you should be aware of. Understanding these transactions can help you make smarter financial decisions and maximize the benefits of your RCBC Flex Gold credit card.

1. Purchase Transactions: These are the most common type of credit card transactions. When you make a purchase using your credit card, the amount is charged to your card and you will be required to pay it off at a later date. It’s important to keep track of your purchases to ensure you can pay off the balance when it’s due.

2. Cash Advance Transactions: If you need cash in a pinch, you can use your credit card to withdraw cash from an ATM. However, cash advance transactions usually come with high fees and interest rates, so it’s best to avoid them if possible. If you do need to take out a cash advance, make sure you pay it off as soon as possible to minimize interest charges.

3. Balance Transfer Transactions: If you have a balance on another credit card with high interest rates, you can transfer the balance to your RCBC Flex Gold credit card at a lower interest rate. This can help you save money on interest payments and pay off your debt faster. Be sure to read the terms and conditions of the balance transfer offer to understand any fees or promotional interest rates that may apply.

4. Instalment Transactions: Some purchases allow you to split the cost into smaller monthly instalments. This can be a convenient option for larger purchases like electronics or furniture. However, keep in mind that there may be interest charges associated with instalment plans, so be sure to read the terms and conditions carefully before committing to one.

5. Foreign Currency Transactions: If you’re traveling abroad or making a purchase in a foreign currency, your RCBC Flex Gold credit card can be a convenient payment option. However, keep in mind that most credit cards charge a foreign currency conversion fee, so it’s important to check the charges and compare them to other payment options before making a purchase.

6. Recurring Transactions: Many bills, subscriptions, and memberships can be set up to be automatically charged to your credit card on a regular basis. This can be a convenient way to manage your finances, but it’s important to review these transactions regularly to ensure you’re not being charged for services you no longer need or want.

In conclusion, understanding the different types of credit card transactions can help you make informed decisions and maximize the benefits of your RCBC Flex Gold credit card. By knowing when and how to use your card, you can take advantage of rewards programs, avoid unnecessary fees, and manage your finances more effectively.

Tips for Responsible Credit Card Usage

Using a credit card can be a convenient way to make purchases and manage your finances. However, it’s important to use your credit card responsibly to avoid debt and maintain a good credit score. Here are some tips for responsible credit card usage:

  • Pay your balance in full and on time each month. This will prevent you from accruing interest charges and help you avoid debt.
  • Stick to a budget and only charge what you can afford to pay off. It’s easy to overspend with a credit card, so it’s important to be disciplined and only make purchases that fit within your budget.
  • Monitor your credit card statements regularly. Check for any unauthorized charges or errors and report them to your credit card company immediately.
  • Avoid cash advances. Cash advances often come with high fees and interest rates, so it’s best to avoid using your credit card for cash transactions.
  • Avoid maxing out your credit card. Maxing out your credit card can negatively impact your credit score. Try to keep your credit card utilization below 30% of your credit limit.
  • Don’t apply for too many credit cards. Each time you apply for a new credit card, it can temporarily lower your credit score. Only apply for credit cards when you really need them.
  • Read the terms and conditions of your credit card agreement. Make sure you understand the interest rates, fees, and any other important terms before using your credit card.
  • Use credit card rewards to your advantage. Many credit cards offer rewards programs that can earn you cash back, travel points, or other benefits. Take advantage of these rewards, but be mindful of any associated fees.
  • Protect your credit card information. Keep your credit card and PIN numbers secure and be cautious when making online purchases or giving out your credit card information over the phone.
  • Regularly review your credit report. Check your credit report for any errors or signs of identity theft. Reporting any issues promptly can help protect your credit score and financial well-being.

By following these tips, you can use your credit card responsibly and make the most of its benefits while avoiding debt and maintaining a healthy credit score.

Paying Your Bills on Time

One of the most important things you can do to maximize your credit card benefits is to pay your bills on time. Late payments can result in late fees, higher interest rates, and a negative impact on your credit score. Here are some tips to help you stay on top of your payments:

Set up automatic payments: Consider setting up automatic payments for your credit card bills. This way, you won’t have to worry about missing a payment deadline or incurring any late fees. Just make sure you have enough funds in your bank account to cover the payment.

Pay more than the minimum amount due: While it’s important to pay at least the minimum amount due on your credit card bill, paying more than the minimum can help you pay off your balance faster and save on interest charges.

Keep track of your due dates: Make a note of all your credit card payment due dates and set reminders on your phone or computer. This will help you stay organized and ensure that you never miss a payment.

Use online or mobile banking: Take advantage of online or mobile banking to easily keep track of your credit card payments and balances. This can help you monitor your spending and ensure that you have enough funds to pay your bills on time.

Consider a balance transfer: If you have a high-interest credit card balance, consider transferring it to a card with a lower interest rate. This can help you save on interest charges and pay off your debt more quickly.

Communicate with your card issuer: If you are unable to make a payment on time, it’s important to communicate with your card issuer. They may be able to offer you a payment extension or work out a payment plan to help you avoid late fees or credit score damage.

By paying your bills on time, you can maximize the benefits of your RCBC Flex Gold credit card and maintain a positive credit history. Remember to budget your expenses and manage your credit wisely to ensure financial stability.

Monitoring Your Credit Card Usage

Monitoring your credit card usage is an important part of managing your finances. By keeping track of your card activity, you can see where your money is going and make sure you stay within your budget.

Here are some tips for effectively monitoring your credit card usage:

  • Check your statement regularly: Review your credit card statement every month to identify any unauthorized transactions or errors. This will help you detect any fraudulent activity and ensure that you are only paying for the purchases you actually made.
  • Sign up for alerts: Many credit card issuers offer email or text alerts that notify you of important account updates, such as large transactions or approaching credit limit. By signing up for these alerts, you can stay informed about your card activity in real-time.
  • Use online banking: Take advantage of your credit card issuer’s online banking platform to access your account information anytime, anywhere. Online banking allows you to view your recent transactions, check your balance, and track your spending patterns conveniently.
  • Review your credit score: Your credit score is a reflection of your creditworthiness and is determined by factors such as your payment history, credit utilization, and length of credit history. Regularly checking your credit score can help you monitor your overall financial health and make necessary adjustments to improve it.
  • Set spending limits: Establishing spending limits for different categories, such as groceries, dining, and entertainment, can help you stay on track with your budget. By monitoring your spending against these limits, you can identify areas where you may need to cut back and allocate funds more effectively.

By monitoring your credit card usage regularly and taking proactive steps to manage your finances, you can maximize the benefits of your credit card and maintain a healthy financial situation.

Next Step: Tell us who is travelling so we can give you an accurate quote.

Who do you want to get a quote for?

Why we ask: Since your credit card’s travel insurance covers you, your spouse and/or your dependent children, your quote will calculate the coverage you already have on your card—saving you money!

Why we ask: Since your credit card’s travel insurance does not cover travellers other than you (the cardholder), your spouse and/or your dependent children, your quote for these travellers will not factor in your credit card coverage.

Tip: You will need to get a quote and buy travel insurance for other eligible travellers separately so that we can give you an accurate quote for everyone.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this insurance coverage, a traveller must be:

  • A client of the RBC companies or a spouse or child of a client
  • A Canadian resident (applicable for Emergency Medical Insurance coverage)

Travel Insurance coverage is not included on your card, but we can cover you!

Although the card you used to purchase your trip does not include coverage, you can get a quote and buy affordable travel insurance now.

RCBC Bankard Visa Platinum Review

June 11, 2020 by Thrifty Hustler

I have had my RCBC Bankard Visa Platinum credit card for exactly 10 months now and it will be due for renewal in two months. I got it when I applied via the credit card agent I chanced upon a shopping mall.

I have already used this card for my local offline and online shopping . I have also used this card for booking flight tickets and hotels online. I have not yet used it though for international travel because it is not permitted recently due to the pandemic outbreak.

So, probably I will have the chance to try it for international purchases by the end of this year or the first quarter of next year depending on how the situation goes. I will update this post once I get the chance to travel internationally.

Update 10/26/20: I already have discontinued this card after getting the confirmation that the annual fee for the next year will not be waived.

Having said that, I will not be updating this article anymore. Please check RCBC’s website for updated information.

Advantages of Owning an RCBC Bankard Visa Platinum?

RCBC Visa Platinum

Earning Miles

The best news is – Miles are non-expiring and you can convert your Preferred Airmiles to:

  • Mabuhay Miles
  • GetGo Points
  • AirAsia Big Points

1 Preferred Airmile is equivalent to 1 Asia Mile/Mabuhay Mile/GetGo Point/BIG Point.

You can earn 1 Preferred Airmile for every:

  • P25 on Overseas Transactions (Non-service merchants / Retail / Online)
  • P48 on Domestic Transactions (Non-service merchants / Retail / Online)
  • P125 on Service Merchants (i.e. supermarket, gas, drugstore)
  • P250 on Utility Bills Payment

It’s not the best spend to mile ratio out there. I find my other credit card – Citi PremierMiles to be better when it comes to the spending to mile ratio. However, I didn’t sign up for RCBC for the miles conversation. I signed up with them for the Free Airport Lounge Access.

Free Airport Lounge Access

Oh, man! If you frequently travel locally via airlines that fly out of Terminal 1 and 3 then you will love this card. RCBC Bankard Visa Platinum offers unlimited free airport lounge access to the Skyview Airport Lounge (T1) and The Club Manila Lounge(T2) for the Principal cardholder plus one travel companion.

How I wish that there’s also an airport lounge at the domestic airport where Air Asia flies out from and this will be perfect!

Aside from having unlimited access to local airport lounges at T1 and T3, you also get a complimentary Priority Pass™ membership to access over 1,300+ airport VIP lounges worldwide.

Please note though that it’s a free membership and does not cover the usage fee or visit fee which amounts to $27 per use.

The Standard Membership Fee for Priority Pass™ as of the time of writing is $99. So essentially, you’re saving $99 annually by having this card.

If you travel frequently then the airport lounge access benefit is already an awesome reason enough to get this card.

Visa Concierge Services

This is one of the underrated free services that are not exclusive to RCBC but we oftentimes do not use it. I personally have not tried using the Visa Concierge Services yet but will try doing so once travel is permitted.

With Visa Concierge Services, you can avail of these services 24/7 anywhere in the world:

  • Flight Reservations
  • Hotel Reservations
  • Restaurant Reservations
  • Car Rental Reservations
  • Event Ticket Purchases
  • Trip Planning
  • Other General Requests

Free Travel Insurance

If you have an RCBC Bankard Visa Platinum, you are entitled to comprehensive travel insurance coverage worth up to Php5 Million which provides the following insurance benefits:

  • Accidental Death, Dismemberment, and/or Disablement
  • Recovery of Travel Expenses for Emergency Trip Cancellation
  • Recovery of Travel Expenses for Emergency Trip Termination
  • Travel Inconvenience Benefits like Baggage Delay and Flight Delay
  • Emergency Medical Treatment for Accident or Sickness
  • Car Rental Protection
  • Sports Activities Extension

Please note that the travel insurance plan depends on the amount of tickets purchased using your RCBC card:

  • For tickets purchased at P24,999 and below, you get a travel insurance plan coverage of P1 Million.
  • For tickets purchased at P25,000 to P39,999, you get a travel insurance plan coverage of P3 Million.
  • For tickets purchased at P40,000 and above, you get a travel insurance plan coverage of P5 Million.

Please note that just like any other Free Travel Insurance offered by any other credit card provider, terms and conditions apply.

Bonus Travel Limit

This feature means that you can (if approved) avail of a temporary increase of up to 100% in your credit limit during the travel period with a maximum cap of bonus Travel limit up to P500,000 or US$10,000, if Dollar card.

You will have to call RCBC or email them in order to avail of this feature. Once a request is accepted, you will be evaluated based on:

  • Payment history, not delinquent/ suspended/ over limit during the time of call
  • RCBC Bankard credit card should be in the cardholder’s possession and not expired.
  • No increase in credit limit in the last 6 months.
  • Should be at least a year cardholder.

Please note that the Bonus Travel limit is temporary and shall revert to the regular limit once the travel period concludes.

RCBC Bankard UNLI 0%  and  UNLI Installment

This is not a feature exclusive to RCBC Bankard Visa Platinum but I’ve decided to include this because (1) it’s an awesome feature/service and (2) I just availed this service this week (as of the time of writing).

Basically, this service means you can avail of a  0% installment for 3 months via UNLI 0% or longer payment terms up to 36 months with minimal interest rate via UNLI Installment .

Notifications on Log In

Another thing that I love about my RCBC card is this simple notification service that I get on my SMS and Email every time I do a transaction and even as simple as when I log in to the RCBC Bankard website. It makes me feel safer having this kind of feature.

Waived Annual Fee on the First Year

This is another benefit that I find very appealing for any new credit card – a free annual fee for the first year. It makes it very easy to decide to try out a new card and see if it fits your needs.

Disadvantages of Owning an RCBC Bankard Visa Platinum?

P5,000 annual membership fee.

You get tons of credit card benefits with RCBC Bankard Visa Platinum, however, the annual fee is a bit steep. The first-year membership fee is waived so if you want to try it out then it’s almost a risk-free decision for anyone.

However, once your renewal is due, then you might think twice about maintaining the card because of the annual membership fee. If you’re a frequent flyer then for sure, this card is worth the annual membership fee.

No Mobile App Yet

This is not really a big disadvantage but rather, just a small inconvenience. Almost, all major credit card providers have a mobile app nowadays to provide more convenience to their customers.

RCBC Bankard needs to be accessed via the traditional website. I don’t know if this is already in the pipeline in the succeeding months since a lot of their competitors have mobile apps already.

Will I keep my RCBC Bankard Visa Platinum?

If the annual fee for my second year will be waived, then definitely. But if not, I will have to think about it. I will definitely avail of another premium RCBC Bankard credit card to replace this if I decide not to keep this credit card. But for now, I’m really happy to have this card.

Should you try it?

Definitely! It’s almost a risk-free decision if you ask me because the first-year annual membership fee is waived.

Credit card interest rates are often higher than other financial products like personal loans or mortgages so it's best to pay off your credit card balance in full every month . However, that isn't always possible so many people may wind up with high-interest credit card debt. In these situations, taking advantage of a 0% balance transfer offer can reduce the interest you pay and help you pay off your credit card debt more quickly.

Chase is known for issuing some top travel credit cards , but it also has several cards that offer an intro 0% APR for balance transfers. Consider these Chase balance transfer credit cards if you're hunting for a balance transfer offer. (See our methodology for information on how we chose the best Chase balance transfer credit cards).

The Chase Slate Edge℠ is a no annual fee card with several features that can help you pay less interest, but doesn't earn rewards.

Get an automatic review for a higher credit limit when you pay on time and spend $500 in the first six months.

Notable perks

With the Chase Slate Edge , you are automatically considered for a 2% APR reduction if you pay your monthly bill on time and spend at least $1,000 on the card before your next account anniversary (terms apply). While you'll want a plan to pay off your balance transfer before the interest kicks in, this feature can help you lower your APR compared to what you might pay with other credit cards.

This card's insurance benefits include purchase protection, extended warranty protection, roadside dispatch and rental car collision and theft coverage (secondary in the U.S.).

[ Return to card summary ]

The Chase Freedom Unlimited® is one of CNBC Select's top no-annual-fee cash-back credit cards with a unique intro bonus and a handful of useful benefits to complement its cash-back earnings.

  • 6.5% cash back on travel booked through Chase Travel
  • 5% back on Lyft rides (through Mar. 31, 2025)
  • 4.5% cash back on dining
  • 4.5% cash back at drug stores
  • 3% cash back on all other purchases (on up to $20,000 spent in the first year)

Earn an additional 1.5% cash back on everything you buy (on up to $20,000 spent in the first year).

Cardholders can earn 5% cash back on Lyft rides through March 2025 and enroll for three complimentary months of DashPass (activate by Dec. 31, 2024). Purchases are also covered by a range of built-in protections like rental car collision damage insurance (secondary in the U.S.), extended warranty coverage, purchase protection and trip cancellation and interruption insurance.

While this is a cash-back credit card , you can boost the value of the rewards you earn by pairing this card with a Chase card that allows points transfers (such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card ). By transferring the rewards you earn to travel partners like World Hyatt, United MileagePlus and Air Canada Aeroplan, you can potentially book luxury hotels and flights for fewer points.

The Chase Freedom Flex℠ packs a punch with generous rewards in bonus categories that change every quarter and an easy-to-earn welcome bonus.

  • 5% cash back on the first $1,500 spent in categories that change each quarter, then 1% cash back (activation required)
  • 5% cash back on travel booked through Chase Ultimate Rewards®
  • 3% cash back on dining
  • 3% cash back at drug stores
  • 1% cash back on all other purchases

Earn a $200 bonus after spending $500 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.

Cardholders receive discounts and special perks with partners like Lyft and DoorDash. There are also many valuable built-in protections for a no-annual-fee card, including:

  • Cell phone insurance
  • Rental car insurance (secondary in the U.S.)
  • Extended warranty coverage
  • Purchase protection
  • Trip cancellation and interruption insurance

When you have a Chase card that unlocks the ability to transfer Chase points to hotel and airline partners (like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card) , it increases the value of the Freedom Flex. So this isn't only a strong standalone rewards credit card , but it has synergies with other cards.

How to complete a Chase balance transfer

Chase typically charges a balance transfer fee from 3% to 5% with a $5 minimum. Before you complete a balance transfer , be sure the interest you save will outweigh the fee.

There are several ways to do a balance transfer with Chase. One of the best and easiest options is to complete a balance transfer when you apply for a card. When you do this, you'll be able to make the most out of your intro APR because any 0% interest timeframe you qualify for begins when you open the card.

If you want to perform a balance transfer with a Chase card you already have, you'll need to log in to your account and follow these steps:

  • Click "Pay & Transfer"
  • Then click on the "Transfer" dropdown menu
  • Select "Card balance transfers"

You can then select any of your Chase cards from a dropdown menu and see what balance transfer offers are available.

Are Chase balance transfers worth it?

When you make a balance transfer, you'll generally pay a fee of 3% to 5% of the balance. To determine whether a balance transfer is worth it, calculate how much you would save in interest compared to how much you'd pay in transfer fees.

What is one disadvantage of a 0% interest balance transfer card?

Aside from the balance transfer fees, the biggest downside to a balance transfer is you'll have the same amount of credit card debt as before. If you don't have a plan, or the resources, to pay off your debt before the intro APR expires, you'll be stuck paying interest once again.

Do balance transfers hurt your credit?

A balance transfer doesn't directly hurt your credit score and could help improve your credit if you're able to pay down your debt. However, you'll want to keep in mind that your credit score will temporarily dip when you apply for new credit (including a balance transfer card).

Bottom line

The top balance transfer cards Chase issues offer intro APR periods of 15 to 18 months, and these intro APR offers also apply to purchases, making them even more useful. If you're interested in paying less interest , these are some of the best offers available. When you're in credit card debt, your primary focus should be repayment, not earning rewards, but the fact that some of the cards on this list earn rewards is a nice bonus.

Our methodology

To determine which Chase cards are best for balance transfers, CNBC Select analyzed the Chase credit cards with intro APR balance transfer offers. We compared each card on a range of features, including the annual fee, rewards, welcome bonus and balance transfer fee. We also considered additional perks, consumer protections, the application process when available and how easy it is to redeem rewards. However, when you're in credit card debt, your priority should be repayment, so we focused more on the cards that provide consumers with the cheapest ways to pay off their debt rather than the number of rewards they could potentially earn.
