On 5 April we were informed by our travel agent that Riviera Tours had decided that the holiday would no long start on 22 September but would instead start on 24 September if we wished to still fly from Luton. We could either agree to go on the new date or cancel, in which case, our deposit would be refunded.

The cancellation policy of the hotel is that the £81.00 “is not refundable if the booking is cancelled or modified”. This means that through no fault of our own we lose £81.00, whatever we do. The travel agent put this to Riviera Tours who have refused to refund this money, quoting their conditions of contract.

Andalucía is simply one of the most beautiful corners of Europe yet for many it remains relatively undiscovered. It’s a land where the excesses of the modern era seem not to have taken root and where travellers are genuinely welcomed. The food is a delight, with the area noted for its seafood and its famous drink, the fortified wine from Jerez we call sherry. Try a glass of fino, a very dry yet refreshing sherry, while nibbling tapas, that great Spanish titbit invention. The people are charming – always ready to help, with a friendly attitude towards their fellow man and a love of life so typical of Mediterranean people. So, for an inspirational blend of timeless countryside, iconic monuments, romantic and vivacious cities, fragrant flowers and orange blossom, wonderful art and superb cuisine, all set in a region that welcomes visitors as honoured guests, welcome to Andalucía.

ARRIVAL IN MALAGA

Arrive at the airport for your flight to Malaga. On arrival, we transfer to the four-star Ilunion Hacienda del Sol. This hotel is ideally situated in undulating countryside near the village of Mijas.

riviera travel classical spain tripadvisor

After breakfast we take a drive into the hills forming the beautiful backdrop to the coast and then arrive in Ronda, a city widely acknowledged as one of the most spectacular in Spain and which enjoys a setting so naturally dramatic it could be in a fairy tale. Built on a ridge and split by a most impressive gorge plunging down hundreds of feet, much of Ronda’s appeal lies in its spectacular views and clear mountain air – Andalucía at its simple best.

We continue our drive into the countryside beyond, which is both very scenic and quite isolated, so much so it is not unusual to see eagles and vultures soaring above or ibex roaming the mountains. Another treat awaits, as this evening we enjoy an introduction to delicious tapas. It is said that tapas dishes were originally slices of bread or meat used by sherry drinkers in Andalucían taverns to cover their glasses and keep fruit flies away. Over the centuries, with the introduction of olives, tomatoes, peppers and potatoes, tapas dishes gradually evolved into a most delightful tradition.

riviera travel classical spain tripadvisor

Flamboyant, seductive, fascinating … Seville is all these and more. It is simply one of the most beautiful and charismatic cities in the world, with the serene River Guadalquivir flowing through its centre, a history spanning the centuries, a wealth of historic buildings, colourful back streets and peaceful parks.

It has its origins in Roman times – the Emperor Hadrian, builder of the famous wall, came from here. During the 8th century the Moors arrived, stayed for five centuries and left a unique legacy still in evidence today. However, if one event changed Seville, it was the discovery of the New World and, fittingly, Columbus is buried in the imposing cathedral. Immense wealth poured in from Spain’s new empire and catapulted Seville into one of the largest and richest cities in Europe.

Much of Seville was built during this time and it seems to have changed little in the last 500 years, with tiny twisting streets and hidden squares where the locals hide from the midday sun in high summer. Today, though, it possesses a vibrant, cultural spirit that is very special.

The city of Figaro, this is the setting for another classic opera, Carmen . It’s also the home of flamenco, the origins of which are lost in the aeons of time. In short, this is the essence of Spain.

After breakfast we have a tour of this beguiling city, during which we’ll see the awe-inspiring semi-circular Plaza de España, a fine example of Renaissance Revival and Moorish Revival styles of Spanish architecture. You’ll also see the Tower of Gold, so named as it was used to store plunder from the Americas, and much more.

FREE DAY IN SEVILLE

Today we have a free day. There are the ‘musts’ to revisit if you wish, such as the Alcázar, the fortified palace of the Moors with a richness of decoration which will astound you, and the cathedral, but also take time to wander around the Barrio Santa Cruz, the former Jewish quarter of the medieval city, and the smart pedestrianised Calle Sierpes, a street full of beautiful shops selling high-quality leather goods. The Maria Luisa Park is a beautiful display of colour where you can relax and indulge in a spot of people-watching.

riviera travel classical spain tripadvisor

After breakfast we leave Seville and head east to another of Andalucía’s classic cities, arriving in Córdoba for our guided tour. Córdoba was the ancient capital of the Moors and is principally famous for a single building – the Mezquita – the grandest and most beautiful mosque ever constructed in the Moorish world. Dominating the centre of the Old Town, which was once the home of a thriving Jewish community, it is a building of extraordinary power and mystery with an arcaded hall supported by over 850 columns made of semi-precious stones. One can only wonder at the architectural brilliance of the builders all those hundreds of years ago, while northern Europe was still immersed in the depths of the Dark Ages. Another highlight is the immense, well-preserved Roman bridge. Córdoba is a delightful place full of patios drenched in the colour of thousands of flowers – the Spanish seem to take so much pride decorating their homes.

We then continue our journey to arrive in the city of Granada, the last stronghold of the sultans during the Middle Ages and home to the Alhambra, the most spectacular gem of Moorish Andalucía. As we approach Granada, there can be no more proof of the diversity of this corner of southern Europe. We pass through some very arid countryside with a landscape of dried riverbeds, giving way to rolling olive groves. In the distance is the spectacular Sierra Nevada, the highest mountain range in Spain. The landscape then becomes more fertile and picturesque, with ancient olive trees stretching off into the distance.

Our hotel for the next two nights is either the centrally located four-star Hotel Corona, in the heart of the city and within easy walking distance of the principal areas of interest, or the four-star Hotel Alixares, well located opposite the Alhambra. Both are fully air-conditioned and ideal for a comfortable stay.

riviera travel classical spain tripadvisor

GRANADA & THE ALHAMBRA

Granada has a naturally dramatic location, nestling against the backdrop of permanently snow-capped mountains soaring majestically to a height of 11,000 feet. It is the perfect setting for the most perfect of architectural wonders, the Alhambra. So individual in its setting, so rich in its history and so exquisite in its design, this iconic building was the high point in Moorish culture. It is not just a palace, though. Some of it is a fortress, and much is given over to formal gardens full of roses and fountains, giving an incredible impression of peace and tranquillity.

Today we visit the Alhambra, which for many people will be the highlight of the holiday, and you’ll also have time to explore the city as you wish. There is a myriad of twisting streets, the old Moorish quarter and the traditional gypsy area, all full of tiny unique shops, with seemingly every balcony sprouting flowers in a profusion of colour. There’s nothing better than taking a stroll through these streets, little changed in centuries, with pavements made of pebbles set in mortar and some so narrow that mules were the only form of transport. Granada also boasts some of the most distinctive old bars in Spain, many of them decorated with antique tiles, where taking a drink and a few tapas can be an excuse for a unique, authentically Andalucían experience.

Reviews please?

https://www.rivieratravel.co.uk/testimonials/classical-spain-tour

We have done three tours with Riviera (but not this one) and they are an excellent company.

Does anyone know about the pace of this holiday and the amount of time spent travelling on coaches?

I am hoping to get views from people who have actually completed this specific tour, but thanks for your contribution .

Does Riviera not have its own forums and reviews?

' class=

Hi, did this in 2015 - great tour, nice places, not hectic paced at all, hotels were all decent.

I left a review at the time on their website - it should still be on there, I think they call them Testimonials

Enjoy if you go!

EXCELLENT and most helpful - just the sort of advice I was hoping for.

Very many thanks!

So to conclude, this tour introduces one to Andalusia but it may be a better option to travel as an independent traveller at one's own pace and take one's time to see all the wonderful historic sites instead of having to fit into a demanding schedule with less than friendly fellow travellers

Thank you SO much for taking the time and trouble to review your holiday experience. It seems as though porterage and unfriendly/unhelpful fellow passengers clouded your holiday more than the tour itself?

I've already experienced their rather crowded and hectic itinerary and so I'm not too put off by what you have written...but at least you have prepared me for the rigours that could well lie ahead!

Thank you again...so much of what you have said makes good sense & helps planning.

Thanks for your contribution. Thankfully there has been some useful and helpful feedback.

It would be good though if there was more specific information about the companies that offer such ambitious tours.

Coach tours are tricky because they are never going to please everybody. Some like the hectic schedule with as much crammed in as possible whereas others prefer a more leisurely pace. One of our trips with Riviera we thought was a bit ‘lightweight’ whereas some of our fellow travellers were very happy with it.

Many thanks B&P Tynemouth for your sensible & helpful comments. We normally travel independently but Riviera seem to have planned this holiday well, with pre-arranged visits to major sights & attractions that avoid having to queue for hours.

Tempting to organise things myself, especially as you rate the local transport. Thanks again!

We checked in late at night. Perfect welcome , friendly , informative and quick. Room on the third floor via lift. Standard room . Large space with a comfy and ample bed. All the amenities for a city stay. Shower room was big enough with its 4 piece set. All was spotless and serviced every day. Breakfast was really good set in a very large room with loads of selection of hot and cold food and drinks. Happy hour late afternoon in the downstairs bar (€2 for a large beer ). The rooftop pool was splendid with a neat patio and veiws across Seville. All the sites are within 15-20 flat walk away. A tip ..... don't bother with the river trip (so boring ). Every member of staff was friendly, helpful and efficient. Defo recomend.

We stayed 2 nights as part of a coach tour of Andalusia. Hotel is in a very good location with good breakfast and decent bar prices; rooms were small and could use more sockets for recharging phones etc, but clean, tidy and well equipped. They did a pretty decent dinner for the group and the reception area was nice and cool. Very nice roof-top pool with views over the city, plenty of sun-loungers and a part-time bar - all great. Our room was next to the chimney from the kitchen which was rather noisy and a bit smelly, they left it running one night and we had some difficulty explaining the problem to staff the next morning - but our Spanish is virtually nil and it did get turned off the next night. Overall a very solid three star, we'd have rated it very good apart from the chumney problem.

Really friendly, helpful staff. Small bedroom but spotless and had everything you need. Lovely rooftop pool and sun lounge which was greatly appreciated after sightseeing in the heat. Fantastic breakfast, such a good choice of food. A great base close to all the sites.

This hotel was in a good position for visiting the sights of Seville. The room was rather small but clean and comfortable with at tea tray provided. The bathroom was very good. The breakfast was good with freshly squeezed orange juice. There is a roof top swimming pool but limited loungers.

We spent two nights here as part of a tour. The rooms are spacious, with good air conditioning, comfortable beds, good shower and very clean. The dinner and breakfast were of good quality and the service from staff was prompt and helpful. Our room even had tea making facilities- a real bonus as this is not common in European hotels. Located about 20 minutes walk from the historical centre of Seville, it is not exactly central. We thought it was very good for the level of star rating.

Riviera Classical Spain

My wife and I came back from The Classical Spain trip last monday. In general it was a very good and interesting trip with a nice crowd on our coach. Everything went very smooth and we always set off on time. We had a very good guide in Gwynneth and excellent driver in Pedro. I was personally "afraid" of long ques with more than 50 people checking in at the same time, but Riviera/Gwynneth sorted that out very efficiently. I won't go into all different details, but we saw a lot of interesting places in Ronda, Sevilla, Cordoba and Granada with Alhambra as the highlight. We could have done with a bit less time in Sevilla and a bit lenger in Cordoba and Granada, but ok. First two hotels were good, but we were not satisfied with the one in Granada called Corona. The barstaff were hardly present, and for breakfast on monday they should have had staff and food enough to be able to handle two Riviera coaches to leave at 8 am, meaning most people come down just after 7. Only one coffeemachine meant waiting 5-10 minutes for a cup of coffee!. Overall we can definitely recommend it, but beware that it is tiring and you have a lot of walking every day.

The different historical influences are very impressive indeed. But for anyone who has seen Arabic kind of buildings before, this is nothing new. It looks great from the outside and certainly is worth seeing but I find it overrated. Honestly we found the overall appearance of Granada rather disappointing compared to Ronda and Cordoba.

Nice but not much too see. Worth 16€ but not more! Avoid the official tour guide : she was kind but not well organised and not giving more information than the audio guide. Tour was crowded and the audio system was very poor! A shame for 45€!!!

I didnt dislike anything! It was everything I'd hoped for and more. Its very easy to spend 4/5 hours wandering around in such gorgeous surroundings and wonderful views of Granada as a bonus

Tickets are sold out well in advance, to get them on the day you need to be there at 7am and your time slot may not be until much later in the day. It's a lovely place with stunning views over the city. There's a lot of walking, there are toilets (rotten!) and a few shops selling drinks, snacks and tat. You have to go into one of the hotels if you want a sit down drink or meal, there are vending machines for coffee and sandwiches. Well worth a trip.

What an amazing place- water gardens and roses in full bloom with views across to the Sierra Nevada topped with snow!
