Coastal Maharashtra Road Trip: Mumbai To Goa Itinerary Via Konkan

I’ve done Coastal Maharastra Road Trip, otherwise known as Konkan Road Trip, twice: once in 2018, and once in 2020. The 2018 trip was done in a car with friends and the 2020 trip was done on a motorcycle, solo. Though I followed the same route, the itinerary was different. Both journeys took 4 days to complete.

This blog on Coastal Maharastra Road Trip Itinerary has been, therefore, written on the basis of the learning from both trips, with updated road conditions as of 2020.

Also, read these Motivational Travel Quotes I’ve handpicked for you.

Now, let’s get started with the topic at hand…

Mumbai to Goa Coastal Maharashtra Trip

road trip to konkan

So far I believed that India has everything to offer but a scenic coastal ride, and to get the best of a road trip in India your options are limited to the Himalayas, with Spiti Valley and Leh Ladakh topping the list.

To make it even more ironic, every time someone asked me about my favourite coastal route in the world the first thing that came to my mind was the Great Indian Ocean Drive in Western Australia , or someplace in Italy. Though I am certainly not comparing the coastal roads of Australia or Italy with Maharashtra’s, the fact that I never explored my own backyard that I didn’t know what beauty it had to offer.

And then, Konkan Road Trip happened, and I realised that it’s not just one of the best road trips in Maharashtra, as often claimed, but one of the best in the world.

Note: Mumbai to Goa Coastal Maharastra and Konkan Road Trips are both the same. The coastal region of Maharashtra is otherwise known as the Konkan region, hence the same thing. Now let’s start with the route map…

Mumbai to Goa Coastal Maharashtra Route Map

Before you go on the route and start Google navigating, let me tell you that Google will keep navigating you from the main Mumbai to the Goa highway route. But since we are talking about the Mumbai to Goa coastal route, you will have to stick to the coast. Just have your wits about it and stay as close to the coast as you can.

For your reference, here is Mumbai to Goa Coastal Route by car. The same route is accessible by bikes too…

mumbai to goa coastal route by car

For those who love road trips and beaches, the coastal Konkan region, in Maharashtra is certainly a no-miss.

From roads running parallel to beaches to ferry crossings to an ever-changing landscape — that, at every 50 km, shift from high cliffs to beach-side drives to isolated hilltops barren with red laterite soil — the coastal Maharashtra road trip has all highlights.

For an intrepid, there is more to explore on this route than just the scenic beauty. This including a 16th-century Jaigad Fort, a 17th-century Ganesh Idol at Ganpati Pule, adventure water sports at Tarkarli, many flourishing Konkan villages, strange regional delicacies, and much more.

Coastal Maharashtra Road Trip: More About Journey Than Destinations

Though the entire 600km stretch between Mumbai and Goa coastal route is a highlight, the three highlighted places that deserve a little more time include Harihareshwar, Ganpati Pule and Tarkarli (or Malvan).

For the most part of the trip, you will be driving on the state highway 4 (or SH4) which, in reality, is more like a narrow trail than a highway, but the natural beauty and the experiences it has to offer will make it up to you.

I mean imagine it this way… if you’re doing Mumbai to Goa taking NH 48 you can do the journey in about 12 hours. But if you’re doing the Konkan road trip, it takes at least three days (even if you’re driving throughout the day, every day). There must be something great and offbeat about it!

SH4 is known as the coastal route due to its proximity to the ocean. On several occasions (six times in total) it ends up in the ocean or a massive lagoon, forcing you to take a ferry to get to the other side.

konkan road trip

From moment to moment, the Konkan road trip also offers dramatic backdrops of the blue Arabian sea from atop a steep cliff, before taking you downhill for a close hug with the coast. As the journey nears Goa, the highway starts going inland more frequently, over surprisingly isolated and barren hills, with pleasant villages start showing periodically for a change.

Though for most the part, the SH4 remains a poor country road, at times, it turns into a well-marked and well-sealed highway too. Yet, doing more than 200km a day is quite a challenge and makes it impossible since the idea is to cherish a good road trip experience and grab the scenic beauty en route.

konkan road trip by bus

Tip: Since National Highway 48 is a better alternative to the coastal State Highway 4, Google will keep rerouting you to 48. So just have your wits about going parallel to NH48 and sticking closer to the coast. Wherever there’s a diversion, take the one taking you closer to the coast and that’s the scenic route. At times you may have to deviate and go a little inland too, but starting from Mumbai to all the way to Goa, there are a few different (though for the most part the SH4 only) highways running right next to the coast.

The Coastal Maharashtra route is off the tourist trail. Most tourists doing Mumbai-Goa or Pune-Goa take the better version of the roads and follow NH 48.

Coastal Maharashtra Or Konkan Road Trip Itinerary

  • Mumbai to Harihareshwar (1 ferry crossing)
  • Hariharshwar to Ganpati Pule (4 ferry crossings)
  • Ganpati Pule to Tarkarli (1 ferry crossing)
  • Tarkarli to Goa (no ferry crossings)

konkan bike road trip

Day 3 of the journey, i.e from Ganpati Pule to Tarkarli, remains the highlight of the journey with the most spectacular stretch of the whole trip starting right after Ganpati Pule. As you leave Ganpati Pule, the road climbs around a cliff with Aare Ware beach appearing at a distance below, on the right, providing gorgeous views. A perfectly carved road further compliments the experience.

From Ganpati Pule to all the way to Ratnagiri (a 25km stretch) you get periodic glimpses of the Arabic Sea shimmering on your right as the roads wind uphill and downhill regularly.

konkan coastal road trip

The three ferry crossings on Day 2 (at Bagmandala jetty, at Dhabol and at Tawsal) were also quite an experience and offered great photo ops.

konkan road trip itinerary

Tip : Bagmandala ferry (to Bankot) departs every hour and starts a 6 in the morning. The ferry from Dhabol to Dopave departs every 45 minutes, starting at 6.30 a.m. The last one leaves at 10 p.m. From Tavsal to Jaigad too the ferry runs approximately every 45 minutes, but this one’s the longest of all rides (around 20 mins) with the last ferry, again, leaving at 10 in the night. Cars, motorbikes, and even trucks can be transported on all three ferries.

The entire stretch has more than five ferry crossings all operating during the daytime only. Visit CarFerry.in to check the time schedule for each ferry point and save yourself from some needless waiting.

Coastal Maharashtra or Konkan Road Trip Highlights

Though there’s enough to see and do on the way, and one can easily spend a week slowly driving and still not get bored with the journey, for those doing it in the minimum time, yet enjoying a good share of stop-overs, here are my six suggested stops en route Mumbai-Goa following the coastal Maharashtra of State Highway 4:

Harihareshwar Beach

The highlight of the pilgrimage town of Harihareshwar, the Harihareshwar beach is ideal for those looking for a clean and soothing beach where one can spend some unhurrying time and forget their bustling life in the cities.

coastal maharashtra

The beach assures a noise-free ambience with no watersports and no loud tourists around, as most people visiting Harihareshwar come here for paying tribute to Lord Harihareshwar. There’s moreover only one shack available throughout its half a kilometre expanse.

mumbai to goa coastal Maharashtra

Anjanvel Village

One of the many villages en route, Anjanvel village offers an ideal rural escape. During our stop at Anjarle and a few hours of strolling and eating in the town, I found people in Anjanvel being very hospitable, with most of them eager to share smiles and engage in a happy conversation with tourists.

Anjanvel village

A noticeable highlight was the local Malvan food we had in the town, that was more a food tour experience.

malvan food

Harnai Fish Market

Though you’re going to find quite a few fish markets on State Highway 4, Harnai Fish Market just happens to be one of the largest and busiest. The eclectic atmosphere at Harnai Beach with women clad in bright sarees screaming and yelling for their best prices and the men going catching and bringing fishes from the ocean to the land is quite a sight. It’s amazing to see how as soon as fresh fish hit the beach, the action starts.

konkan fishing village

Aare Ware Beach Road

A 10 km stretch of a road the Aare Ware Beach road — that starts right from Ganpati Pule beach to the next T-point junction — is the most beautiful highlight of the entire Coastal Maharashtra route. With its many twists and turns, the road frequently goes uphill and downhill, with sometimes offering a distant view of the mighty blue ocean from up a cliff, and sometimes, a closer shrug.

konkan road trip

Devgad Fort & Ananvadi Fishing Village

If deserted forts and dramatic sunsets overlooking an infinite ocean is your thing then you’re going to fall in love with coastal Maharashtra. Starting Mumbai to all the way to Goa, we came across a few dozens abandoned forts, but the one we stopped by for capturing the sunset was the fort of Devgad and I can’t recommend it more.

devgad fort konkan

The adjoining fishing village of Ananwadi was moreover a great place to capture some village life.

coastal maharashtra villages

Tarkarli Village

Out of all the villages we explored, I particularly loved the setting of Tarkarli village.

tarkari village konkan

Though the highlight in Tarkarli is the adventure water sport (including Scuba diving, Jet Ski, Banana Boat Ride, and Parasailing, among others) for a photo buff, Tarkarli had much to offer. Just walk across the many intermingled bylanes and capture the essence of rural coastal Maharashtra.

Awesome info.. this is exactly the kind of info i was looking for, for my sept monsoon roadtrip from Ahmedabad to Goa. Most blogs and videos show NH66 or Mumbai – Pune – Belgaum route which makes you reach the destination faster but doesnt let you enjoy the journey as much as SH4 would.

How are the road conditions on SH4 during monsoon? Good enough for driving by car without getting into trouble? Any idea / tips?

Planning a road trip to konkan have you checked these places...

road trip to konkan

We all love road trips and loving them have our own reasons.

Breaking out of normal routine and hitting the roads like nomads for a week is undoubtedly an adventurous and wonderful thing to do.

I have been lucky to roam through various parts and terrains of India but riding the coastal road of Konkan has few substitutes.

So, if you are looking for places of interests in Konkan or looking to hit the lush green roads of Western Ghats I highly recommend to take the coastal highway.

Best time to visit

With its pristine clear beaches, silent valleys, lovely people, free-flowing river and empty roads, Konkan is the place to be during winters i.e. from September to March.

Sagari Mahamarg or the Coastal sea route runs right from Alibaug to Goa. Coded as MSH 4 or Mumbai Goa Coastal highway, the route runs through multiple creeks.

In some places, you may need to make use of Jetty to cross the creek. Two wheelers and four wheelers can be easily transported across the creeks using state run Trawlers.

Mumbai to Goa road trip Konkan coastal highway map

Coastal highway route

Time needed

At least 4 days is suggested to spend on this route and not less than that. Night halt can be Diveagar, Guhagar, Malvan and Goa.

I have shortlisted few places in north-south order but the beauty of Konkan is not limited to below places. Every turn there has its own charm.

Dabhol and Anjanvel

Dabhol is a coastal town which lies on the Sagari Mahamarg after the town of Dapoli. One can take a jetty from Dabhol to Anjanvel on the other side.

View of Arabian Sea from Anjanvel lighthouse

Spectacular coast of Dabhol

Guhagar Beach

Guhagar is a small and straight town with an awesome beach and windy surrounding. The white sand and blue water beach are not yet commercialized and one can spend quality time walking down the length of the beach. It is around 15 km from Anjanvel lighthouse.

Lately, a number of hotels and restaurants have sprung up and remains functional throughout the year.

Dramatic evening at Guhagar beach

Seascape of Guhagar beach

Ganpatipule the temple town

Next town to stop by after Guhagar is Ganpatipule. And the journey from Guhagar to Ganpatipule is riding amidst silent hills and super curved Ghats.

Ganpatipule is popular for Lord Ganesh temple which right on the beach.

Another attraction in Ganpatipule is ‘Prachin Konkan’. Prachin Konkan is a concept based tourist attraction designed to make the tourist aware of the history of Konkan and its a must-visit for a culture loving travellers.

A silent river near Tavsal Jetty

Beautiful riverside village

A section in Prachin Konkan depicting traditional Konkani kitchen

Ganpatipule to Malvan is like high mountain roads on one side and expansive roaring Ocean on the other side. It’s very much like the Pacific highway map we used to play in the NFS video games.

After Ratnagiri, there isn’t much ghat and mostly the roads are straight running through tabletops. One gets to see fantastic stretches of green and yellow fields.

Malvan is an old city and has mentions in our ancient scriptures. At the heart of Malvan city is a narrow road running across the old market with shops glittering on each side.

Places of attraction in and around Malvan are Devbag Sangam, Sindhudurg Fort, Snorkelling at Tarkali beach and spotting Dolphins in the sea.

An evening in Malvan

After Malvan next obvious stop would be Vengurla. Vengurla is around 25km inside from the Mumbai Goa highway and the route is extremely scenic.

Some places of attraction here are Vengurla Bandar, Vengurla Market Terekhol Fort and Sagareshwar beach.

I loved the place so much that I went there alone and stayed for 3-4 days. I rented a cycle to explore the place at a slow pace. You can read the entire travelogue here stay in Vengurla day 1 , stay in Vengular day 2 and stay in Vengurla day 3 ( links will open in new tab ).

That roadtrip lady

Women’s Roadtrip: Mumbai to Goa via Konkan/Coastal Route (Using Ferries) -Part 1

Mumbai to Goa by road is one of the most popular Indian roadtrips.

Konkan Maharashtra drive

I have been to Goa about 20 times now, but never by road. Previously, I have done a roadtrip till Vengurla-Amboli which is very close to the Maharashtra Goa border, but did not enter Goa on that trip.

In July 2021, my friend Ipsita (I will refer to her as Ipsi from here on) and I planned to drive to Goa.

It seemed like the perfect fit as I am a passionate driver and Ipsi is an excellent photographer, navigator and likes to listen to similar kind of music as me.

As I was the driver, Ipsi left the route to me.

Little did she know what she was getting into.

Also read about my other trip with Ipsi:

  • Chandigarh To Amritsar Roadtrip

Possible Routes

Recently a proposal has been passed for construction of a coastal highway starting from Panvel and ending at Patradevi at Maharashtra-Goa border which should boost Konkan tourism.

Till that happens, there are 3 routes for a Mumbai-Goa road trip:

Via Mumbai-Pune Expressway and NH 4

This is the most common route. This traverses through Mumbai-Pune expressway and then moves on to NH 4 (Bangalore highway) via Satara, Kohlapur and depending on your destination in Goa, you can either enter Goa via Amboli ghats (for north Goa) or Belgaum (for South Goa).

The total distance by this route is roughly 600 km and takes about 11 hours.

This is the actual Mumbai-Goa highway and is more scenic than NH4; however currently (as of Jul 2021), there is construction happening along this highway to widen it from two lane to four lane. This route goes through Pen, Chiplun, Rajapur, Kankavli and Kudal.

This is a shorter route (about 570km) but takes nearly 13 hours.

Konkan/Internal Maharashtra via Ferries

Woman driver

The first two routes are ones that people usually take to reach Goa.

However, the adventurous streak in me wanted to take the coastal/internal Maharashtra route starting from Alibaug and moving southwards right till Vengurla (Maharashtra-Goa border).

Frankly being the driver, I believe I can only enjoy the drive along with the scenery when I am not dodging other vehicles especially trucks (and people, and sometimes dogs/cows) at a speed of 100 kmph.

As a driver, I prefer a slow drive with windows rolled down looking around at the scenery and stopping my car as per my wish (and sometimes my co-passenger’s wish too).

The internal Maharashtra roads are perfect for that kind of drive with frequent glimpses of the sea, ghats, canopies of trees, konkan life, numerous forts and sweeping panaroma of green fields especially in the monsoon season.

And, I am also a true believer of ‘Journey should be as good (if not better than) as the destination’.

Driving along coastal Maharashtra

The issue with this route is you need to take ferries at 4 points.

This route seemed challenging enough for the adventurous side of mine. The practical side was worried about making it to Ganpatipule (our night halt) before dusk.

Below is the approximate route I had planned to reach Ganpatipule.

About the Konkan Route

This route was such an unconventional route that I was unable to find enough information online for my research.

Now that I have driven on this route, I can safely vouch for the below information.

You can drive along the coast starting from Alibaug. On this route you will keep seeing frequent glimpses of the sea.

At Dabhol jetty in Maharashtra

There are four ferry crossings on this route. You can either take all the four ferries or drive towards inland (east) and then come back to the coast (west).

  • Agardanda Jetty at Murud: This ferry takes you to Dighi and avoiding this ferry will be a slight diversion to your down south route (adding about 30km to your coastal route journey).
  • Bagmandle Jetty at Harihareshwar: This ferry takes you to Vesavi on the other side of Savitri river. Avoiding this ferry will result in a long diversion (adding about 100 km to your southward journey)
  • Dabhol jetty: A five-minute ferry ride from this jetty takes you across Vashishti river and lands you at Dhopve. Skipping this ferry and opting for the land route would add about 100 km to your journey.
  • Tavsal jetty: A 15 minute ferry ride from here takes you to Jaigad. Taking the land route here will result in a long diversion.

If you are starting your journey from South Mumbai, you can also take the ro-ro ferry from Bhaucha Dhakka to Alibag. You can pre-book this ticket here .

Questions/Concerns I had before the trip

  • This was going to be my second attempt at taking ferries in India. My first attempt was on my roadtrip from Mumbai to Diu where we had booked ro ro ferry tickets and it got cancelled on the nth day due to low water level resulting in extra 300 km drive for us.
  • The road conditions due to monsoons, lack of information on the internet, the heavy rainfall forecast and the unknown isolated roads with no network connectivity added to my concerns.
  • Two women stranded on some interior secluded road of Maharashtra in heavy downpour and no network was not a pleasant visual.

I did try to voice these concerns to Ipsi, but she seemed to be in the mood for some adventure.

I always am.

Mumbai to Ganpatipule

The only brief I gave Ipsi was to dress a bit conservatively as we would most probably be driving through tiny coastal villages of Maharashtra and also take a few ferries. So flowy skirts and dresses was a strict No No for this stretch.

I am usually too excited to sleep before any trip. This time it was a mix of excitement and nervousness. The result was a meagre 1 hour of sleep.

Despite the brief sleep (or should I say nap?!), I woke up before my alarm. I was so high on adrenaline that the ‘lack of sleep’ did not hit me at all.

Leg 1: Mumbai to Pen

We started from Thane at 5AM and reached Pen in about one hour.

At Pen, I was supposed to decide between the below three choices:

  • Leave NH 66 and go towards Alibag and then drive southwards along the coast (slowest route)
  • Stay on NH66 till Indapur and then drive towards Murud Janjira fort continuing our southward journey along the coast from this point
  • Stay on NH66 till Mangaon and then drive towards Diveagar and then drive southwards along the coast (Fastest route)

The deciding factor was supposed to be the time.

Since we left Mumbai early in the morning, we reached Pen at about 6AM making good time. It was decision making time so we stopped for breakfast and mulled over the next steps.

High on adrenaline and the caffeine in our chais we decided to drive towards Alibag opting for the most challenging route.

It was going to be a ‘Race Against Time’.

On the road towards Alibag

Leg 2: Pen to Murud-Janjira fort

As soon as we left NH66, the road turned narrow with no dividers. Since we were there early in the morning, there was hardly any traffic which I believe is usually not the case on this particular stretch.

We decided to not get into Alibag town as I had been there previously and remembered the lanes being quite narrow there.

So we took the turn towards Kashid.

Konkan roads

Our scenic drive had begun.

We were moving along nicely according to plan when we encountered a road closure just before the Revdanda bridge. As per our map, this road closure meant a diversion adding about 100 km to our journey.

This wasn’t something we could afford if we wanted to continue along the coastal route.

I did what I typically do in such situations.

I panicked .

At that time Ipsi was busy on the phone trying to get her clinic to send her RT-PCR report. With no one to discuss this situation with I started looking around.

For some divine intervention perhaps.

A minute later, I saw a man on a scooter. I waved out to him and knowingly he asked me where I was planning to go.

On understanding my situation, he asked me to follow him. I did so without any hesitation. Followed him through some narrow lanes, off-roading for a bit. Ipsi was stunned that I was actually following an unknown guy through unknown lanes.

My only answer was “I got good vibes from him. I trusted my instinct”.

Within five minutes of this tailing, we were back on the main road on the other side of the road block.

We both heaved sighs of relief.

Me for the fact that we could continue our coastal journey. Ipsi for the fact that we were safe.

Somewhere near Kashid beach

We continued driving along Kashid beach and stopped multiple times to take in the beauty. This was our first glimpse of the sea on this coastal route.

A beautiful stretch right up till Murud-Janjira fort. On the way we crossed Siddi Palace also known as Nawab palace which is a massive property and used to be the residence of Nawab of Janjira. The property is currently owned by the descendants of the nawab and is not open to tourists.

However you can admire the beautiful architecture style from the gate itself. You do not have to even take a detour for this as it is right on the road. The architecture seemed to be a mix of Gothic and Mughal style.

Moving ahead we came to the Murud – Janjira fort view point.

Murud-Janjira fort

Unfortunately due to the monsoons, we could not go the fort as the ferry boats for the fort are not operational in this season. You do get a good enough view from the view point though.

A little ahead, just before you take the right turn towards Rajapuri creek, you can see the  towering Khokari Tombs and can make a quick pit stop here.

Khokari Tombs

Leg 2: Murud Janjira Fort to Mhasala

At this point, we had to make the decision regarding the first ferry at Agardanda jetty. As per the map, the land route was only adding about 30km to our journey, so we decided to skip the first ferry and drive on the beautiful roads of Maharashtra.

And we were definitely rewarded for that decision by the absolutely beautiful Tala-Murud road. It seemed to be newly constructed and was in an amazing condition.

Tala-Murud road

The beautiful weather and the clouds added to our scenic drive.

As expected, for most part we were the only ones on the road cruising along at a decent speed and enjoying the scenery.

As the drive right from Kashid was so scenic, we had taken multiple stops and now I had started worrying about making it in time (read before dusk).

Our initial plan was to go to Diveagar beach and then drive along the coast to Harihareshwar where we would take our first ferry.

By the time we approached Mhasala, it was already noon and I was a little uncertain if we would even get the Harihareshwar ferry (Bagmandla jetty) given my previous experience with Diu.

If we drove till Harihareshwar and did not get the ferry, the result would be adding 100 km to our journey and an additional 3 hours.

Leg 3: Mhasala to Dabhol Jetty

I decided to play safe and take the detour towards inland before Mhasala itself. We took the SH99 – Ambet – SH272 – Dapoli – Dabhol route.

The roads were in very good condition except for a few small patches. That too were not too bad if compared to most of Mumbai roads that my car is used to.

Be prepared to be the only ones for most of the stretch if taking this route.

Lotus flowers somewhere along Konkan route

We stopped for lunch somewhere on the SH and checked online for the ferry timings at Dabhol jetty. As per the information available, the next ferry was at 16:30. I did not know how reliable the timing was but we decided to target it and reached the jetty at 16:10.

Turns out, the timings had changed due to the pandemic but coincidentally 16:30 was common timing on the original as well as the revised list.

Our ferry was named ‘Avantika’ and was already waiting for us at the jetty.

The ticket counter was a small booth with separate price for vehicle (driver was free with the vehicle) and co-passengers. We told the guy to give us one car + one co-passenger and he gave me that familiar look: “You mean driver +2”, he said.

Two sets of eyes rolled.

“No, I am driving” said me. That familiar look again which I like to think as ‘Awe’.

Clicking goofy videos and Pictures at the jetty

The total charge here was INR 190 for the car and INR 16 for one passenger.

With about 15 minutes to spare we did what we do best. Some photography and crazy videos. We had very little audience here which made it easy to click some goofy videos.

The ferry boarding was much smoother than I had imagined. There were only about 3-4 four wheelers in our ferry and about 15 people. Perfect for social distancing. For cars too.

A short but beautiful 5 minute ferry ride got us to the other side of river Vashishti.

The deboarding was equally simple. Seeing woman driver, two attendants came to help with the reversing instructions. Frankly, this is one place where I have no issues with gender bias. I admit, my reversing and parking technique is not the strongest and am grateful for the help here.

Leg 4: Dhapove Jetty to Tavsal Jetty

Happy with the smooth process at the first ferry ride, I was excited for our next ferry which was a one hour drive away.

I casually remarked to Ipsi “I wish our next ferry is named ‘Priyanka'”. That eye roll happened again.

The drive to our next jetty was smooth. As per the online ferry timings, this ferry was supposed to leave at 18:40 so we aimed to reach by 18:30. Stopping along the way for chai, we comfortably reach at 18:30 only to know that the next ferry was at 19:15.

Waiting at the jetty for 45 minutes is actually not a big deal for me as the place is quite scenic being next to the water. And we were also lucky with the weather.

The only issue was the kicking in of twilight.

In about 5 minutes, our ferry arrived and people started disembarking. Between bobbing heads I saw something. Ipsi saw it too. We both looked at each other in disbelief.

Our ferry was named ‘Priyanka’! Just as I had wished!

Ferry from Tawsal to Jaigad: Priyanka

Seriously, kuch aur hi maang liya hota !

After cruising for about 15 minutes on the ferry, we reached Jaigad jetty. Our original plan here was to visit Jaigad fort and light house but could not do so as it was already dark.

The stretch from Jaigad to Ganpatipule was difficult for me to drive on as it was pitch dark without any street lights. The rain and the winding narrow roads added to the difficulty.

Driving at a speed of about 30 kmph, we reached our overnight stay in Ganpatipule at 20:30.

You can also check the timings of the ferry on the same site.

As per the officials at the jetty, monsoon does not affect the schedule of these ferries.

Ferry Options

If you want to reduce the number of ferries and instead drive along the konkan route, then I suggest skipping the Agardanda ferry.

Do not skip the remaining three ferries as that would add a lot of kms and time to your journey.

If you are travelling from South Mumbai, then do take the Mumbai-Mandwa ro ro ferry. It is an expensive ferry ride but the experience is worth it. And of course, you save petrol worth that much, if not more.

There is hardly any network on most of the stretches in interiors of Konkan Maharashtra. Jio has the best coverage. Make sure to download offline maps.

As women on the road, ‘what to wear’ was an important consideration for us. We needed to find the right balance between looking good in the photos – not causing too much of an attention from locals and being comfortable.

For most of my trips, I usually wear loose shorts or loose dresses. For this particular trip, we decided to wear jeans as we had to take a few ferries and wearing flowy stuff would not be advisable.

This is not a very washroom or convenience friendly route. There are very limited restaurants and in turn washrooms on this route.

Having said that, this route has a lot of secluded green stretches which work well when you really have to go. Also, peechute is a good alternate to carry with you for such times – Buy it here

I am the owner/driver of this blog and I love road trips. Women only road trips is a rarity in India and through this blog, I would like to inspire women like me to hit the road. Lack of male co-passenger should not be a deterrent. It took me a lot of years to finally go on my first women only road trip (in 2016) and since then there has been no stopping me. One long distance trip (>1000 km) and a few shorter ones per year is my aim.

Informative blog…..

Hi Please believe that I am supposed to leave for Thane – Bhogwe journey with my wife and cat on 5 th April 2022 by car, and we both are senior citizens. I was seriously considering the concept of taking the coastal route, but lack of I formation was the main issue. I must say that you have done a great job. Your narrative is fluid and the relevency of the details contained in this writeup is amazing. Thanks a lot. Can I request for your phone details please? Thanks and Regards

Thank you for your kind words. I have mailed you my contact number.

Hi Priyanka.. Lovely blog and very detailed.. Please share the relevant phone numbers if you can.. I am planning to take this route with two kids and the information will be very helpful. Looking forward to more stories

Thanks Khushboo! The jetty numbers are mentioned in my blog itself (in the tips section). Do refer to them and call the numbers before hand if possible. If you have any other specific question, feel free to connect me at [email protected] or Instagram (peeya_roadtriplady). Hope you have a fun trip!

Very nice narration and information. Is there fery from mumbai to ratnagiri? My route is Mulund to Malvan. Please share phone no of feries. Tavsal to Ratnagiri is really challenging hats off to you in rainy season.

Thanks Ravindra! There is no direct ferry from Mumbai to Ratnagiri – the only ferries currently are the ones that I have mentioned in the vlog. for Mulund to Malvan, I recommend moving to the coast at Pen itself – then drive along the coast of Kashid, Murud then take the land route till HAriharshwar jetty – take that ferry – then drive till Dabhol jetty, take that ferry and then also take the last ferry at Tavsal. After taking the Tavsal ferry, you will reach Jaigad. From there drive along the coast till Malvan crossing Ganpatipule, Ratnagiri – that is a beautiful drive. You can also check my vlog on the same journey so that you know what to expect: https://youtu.be/oO4aCv3Lees

And the ferry numbers are mentioned in my blog itself – at the end

We, from Mumbai, with our adult 2 boys visiting S.Goa 1st time via road (rental SUV) for a week early Feb. 2023. Wud luv to visit places on the way, with a stayover if needed, any suggestions. Regards

Hi Murli! two good stops for a stay over would be Ganpatipule and Tarkarli (Malvan). There are a lot of forts on the way and you can see any one depending on your timing. If you are staying over at Tarkarli, then you can visit the Sindhudurg fort – its a short ferry ride (15 mins) from Malvan. And dont forget to have the Malvan thali! You can also read my blog on Tarkarli visit : https://thatroadtriplady.com/mumbai-tarkarli-vengurla-amboli-road/ Have a fun trip!

Your blog helped a lot in firming the plan for this trip. keep writing and doing this good work. Myself and my wife we both are into long road trips but we lack the skill to document the experience and share on net so that it can be of help for others. Hi Priyanka ready our blog about your drive from mumbai along the konkan coast. We a group of 14 are wanting to drive from Delhi along the coastline to reach Goa. Would be really helpful if you could suggest a good scenic route and good places to stay & visit along the way. Thanks

Hi Sabeena. That sounds wonderful! I suggest driving till Thane via the regular – you can either take the Gujarat route or the MP route. From Thane, you can stop at Kashid as your first coastal stop. After that drive along the coastal route and your next halt can be Ganpatipule. If you want another coastal stop in Maharashtra, you can stop at Vengurla or drive directly into Goa and stop at Querim or Tiracol fort. Let me know if you need any further information. Have a fun trip!

If you're looking for an exhilarating road trip in India, the journey from Mumbai to Goa along the stunning Konkan Coast should be on your bucket list. This scenic route will take you through picturesque landscapes, quaint villages, and beautiful beaches, offering a perfect blend of nature, culture, and adventure. With a distance of approximately 600 kilometers, this road trip can be completed in about 10-12 hours, depending on your pace and the number of stops you make along the way.

Route Options

There are multiple route options to choose from when driving from Mumbai to Goa. The two main routes are:

  • Mumbai - Panvel - Kolad - Chiplun - Ratnagiri - Vengurla - Goa : This route takes you through the NH66, which offers smooth and well-maintained roads. It is the most popular and convenient route, especially if you are traveling in a car or a bike.
  • Mumbai - Alibaug - Murud - Dapoli - Ganpatipule - Malvan - Goa : This route is slightly longer than the first one, but it offers a more scenic drive. It takes you through coastal towns and villages, allowing you to explore hidden gems along the way.

Places to Visit Along the Way

Located on the banks of the Kundalika River, Kolad is a popular destination for adventure enthusiasts. The river offers thrilling white-water rafting experiences, making it a must-visit place for adrenaline junkies.

Chiplun is a small town known for its picturesque surroundings and pleasant weather. It is a great spot for a brief stopover, where you can enjoy a stroll along the river or indulge in some local delicacies.

Known for its historical and cultural significance, Ratnagiri is a town that deserves a longer stop. Visit the Ratnadurg Fort, enjoy the stunning views from the lighthouse, and don't forget to try the famous Alphonso mangoes, which are grown abundantly in this region.

Vengurla is a hidden paradise with untouched beaches and lush greenery. Spend some time relaxing on the sun-kissed shores, exploring the forts, or indulging in snorkeling and scuba diving activities.

While Alibaug is not directly on the Mumbai-Goa route, it is worth making a detour to visit this charming coastal town. Known for its pristine beaches, historic forts, and delicious seafood, Alibaug offers a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to embark on this road trip is during the winter months, between November and February, when the weather is pleasant and the humidity is low. Monsoon can be a beautiful time to visit as well, as the Konkan region comes alive with lush greenery and cascading waterfalls. However, do note that the heavy rains may affect road conditions, so it's essential to check weather forecasts and plan accordingly.

Tips for Road Trip

  • Ensure that your vehicle is in good condition before starting the journey. Get it serviced and checked thoroughly to avoid any breakdowns along the way.
  • Carry sufficient cash as ATMs may not be easily accessible in remote areas.

MUMBAI GOA ROAD TRIP – THE COASTAL ROUTE

' src=

Road trips are fun to explore new places. India encompasses numerous spots across different parts throughout the country. So, it doesn’t matter which part of the country one lives in, there is always an option of planning a road trip in India.

We did a 10 days motorcycle road trip from Mumbai-Goa-Mumbai via the Coastal Route traversing through scenic seaside villages with endless stretches overlooking the sea. Ride on the sea with your vehicle loaded on a ferry and feel the sea breeze showering you with salted kisses. The coastal route is worth an experience.

This route is less explored as it takes much more time than the other two popular routes of Mumbai Goa Highway (NH66) and Mumbai-Pune-Bangalore Highway (NH4). If you are a traveller and like to roam the roads just like us, this route is for you.

In this article, we will guide you through the coastal route and share our experiences which can help you plan this beautiful road trip.

Table of Contents

DAY 1 – MUMBAI TO HARIHARESHWAR

Route – Mumbai~Kashid~Murud Janjira~Agardanda~Dighi~Harihareshwar (222 kms)

Ferry Point – Agardanda to Dighi Port. (From 8 am every one hour till 9:30 pm)

Our stay on day 1 was at Harihareshwar. You can also plan to finish your day at Shrivardhan which is around 20 kms before Harihareshwar.

Once you hit NH66, just before Karnala there are many breakfast options. We ate at Joshi Wadewale serving authentic Maharashtrian breakfast. Puneri misal is a must try.

Move ahead to Alibaug via Vadkhal junction on NH66. The coastal route begins from here. Skip the halt at Alibag as it can be easily explored any other day from Mumbai. Around 30 kms from Alibag and on the way towards Murud Janjira is Kashid Beach . There are lots of shacks with hammocks offering snacks, cold drinks, and coconut water. You can relax here for some time.

If you are looking for a more secluded beach, then skip Kashid and ride 15 minutes further to Nandgaon Beach . A peaceful and silent place with clean water. Good place to relax in shade of the coconut trees. There are not many eateries here.

We took our first ferry at 1:15pm from Agardanda jetty. It drops at Dighi Port situated on the bank of Rajpuri creek in 15 minutes. From here, Harihareshwar is 48 kms. Road from Dighi is under construction but still a manageable ride.

Sadguru Krupa Khanaval (7350380167) on Dighi road serves homemade meals at a reasonable price. We tried veg & non veg thali. Food was simple and tasty.

Harihareshwar Beach is a stretch of calm and serene waters with unpolluted cool breeze wafting along the sea-shore. After a long ride, this is a perfect place to spend the evening. Visit the 16th century historic Harihareshwar Temple located on the coast. It offers a great combination of natural beauty with spiritual enhancement.

DAY 2 – HARIHARESHWAR to GANPATIPULE

Route – Harihareshwar~Bagmandla~Vesvi~Harnai~Ladghar~Dabhol~Dhopave~Guhagar~Tavsal~ Jaigad~Ganpatipule (164 kms)

Ferry Point-

  • Bagmandla to Vesvi (From 7:30 am every 1 hour)
  • Dabhol to Dhopave (From 6:45 am every 45 min)
  • Tavsal to Jaigad (From 6:40 am every 1 hour)

Day 2 is all about ferry crossing. There are 3 ferries to cross. We took the first ferry at 10:30 am. We were late as we spent the morning doing photography at Harihareshwar.

After a 30 minutes ride, you reach Bagmandla Jetty . The ferry crosses the river Savitri and drops you to another side called Vesvi in 5-10 minutes. It saves you almost 30-40 kms of ride.

Once you reach Vesvi, you need to head towards Dabhol Jetty via Kelshi~Harnai~Murud~route. This is a wonderful stretch of internal village roads. There are many places where you would like to stop and take your time to admire the views and take photographs. Of course you should, as you are roaming the roads to enjoy the journey, aren’t you?

We took our 2nd ferry from Dabhol at 3:45 pm which dropped us at Dhopave in 10 minutes. From here, your next destination is Tavsal Jetty which is 50 kms away. And then, 22 kilometers more and you reach Ganpatipule.

We would like to share a small experience here. It was already 4:30 pm when we left for Tavsal. Our concern was whether we would be able to catch the 6:40 pm ferry. Missing this means waiting for another one hour. The roads were pretty good but narrow with a lot of hairpin turns and for miles we were the only souls to be seen. You can imagine the thrill of riding alone.

It was just when we were soaked in our aloneness, climbing the ghats we came across two young cyclists who were slowly pedaling their way up. I slowed down the bike and initiated a quick conversation. Cycling all the way from Mumbai they were also going to Goa. This was their first bicycle trip. They too were heading towards the jetty. I informed them about the ferry timings. Cheering them up I accelerated. We wish we could stop and listen to their on road experiences, but we did not want to miss the ferry.

We reached the jetty 15 minutes before time. There were not many passengers. We were waiting for the ferryman to allow us in. And when he did, I got up to start my motorcycle and unexpectedly the cyclists turned up just before the ferry was about to leave. And there we were, stretching ourselves and one of them sharing their experiences as the ferry started moving with the wind gently kissing our faces. Their story reflected courage and determination. It was a good feeling to meet these inspiring souls.

After a 20 minutes of ferry ride, we reached Jaigad Jetty. Knowing we wouldn’t meet again, bidding them goodbye we parted our ways.

We reached Ganpatipule at 8:30 pm.

DAY 3 – GANPATIPULE to TARKARLI

Route – Ganpatipule~AareWare~Pawas~Devgad~Tarkarli (181 kms)

No more ferry crossing. Right till you reach Malvan, ride on this beautiful stretch with wonderful views of lush greens, clear, sparkling waters of pristine white beaches, and ancient colorful temples each of which has a unique story to tell.

Before you begin the ride, visit the 400 year old famous Ganpatipule Temple situated on the beach.  Around 1 km from the temple is Prachin Konkan Museum . This is an open air museum featuring sculptures depicting traditional konkan life and culture. A trip to Ganpatipule without visiting this is incomplete.

After a 30 minutes of ride, you will reach a combination of two beaches Aare & Ware which are located next to each other. The stretch is so breathtaking. Definitely a must halt. There is a certain freedom in finding a small piece of the world that belongs only to you, if only for a short time.

There are many places on this route where you would like to stop. Visit some villages on the route. Talk to the locals, fishermen. The people of Konkan are very helpful and humble.

Other places to explore enroute – Devgad & Kunkeshwar

We reached Malvan at 7:00 pm. Our stay was at Ghar Malvankarache (8600381490) – a homestay run by a humble family. They have budget friendly rooms which are clean and comfortable. But above all the food is just awesome. I tried Prawns Masala with Malvani Vade. It was simply delicious. Next day morning for breakfast, Archana aunty served us Ghavane with Cocunut chutney. Whenever I visit Malvan again, I am definitely going to eat here.

DAY 4 – EXPLORE MALVAN

A day is not enough to explore Malvan. Malvan is a kind of place that makes you want to stay on forever if possible – with the waves and the sands, the trees and the stars. But even if you are here for a day or two, you will take back something- if nothing else a snapshot of a unique seashell on a mesmerizing beach.

Take a leisurely walk through the villages, when sunlight filters in through the palms. You will pass women sorting dried fish outside their homes. Give them a smile and you will surely receive it back. This little Konkan town has a bustling jetty with a tangle of boats and roof tiled homes where the scent of wood smoke and aromas of fish curry drift into your memories.

Places you shouldn’t miss to see – Tarkarli Beach , Chiwla Beach , Deobagh Village & Sindhudurg Fort

If you love watersports, then indulge yourself in Scuba Diving , Dolphin Safari and other water activities held here.

DAY 5 – TARKARLI to GOA

Route – Tarkarli~Vengurla~Shiroda~Goa (109 kms)

It was time to go GOA. We were excited.

As we were riding towards Vengurla past peeping palm trees, towards a turn I heard a voice which seemed familiar to me. I turned to see and it was just what we hadn’t expected. There they were: the two cyclists. We were happy to meet them once again.

We used different modes of transport while roaming the roads but we could connect with each other the joy of enjoying the road trips. Road trips are full of surprises, isn’t it? Who knows, we could even meet in Goa.

Keep riding 50 kms till you reach Vengurla. Leisurely ride past the village in the shadow of the verdant plantations of cashewnuts, mango and coconut trees.

Around 3 km from the Vengurla market, Sagareshwar Beach is hidden away behind rows of tall casuarinas swaying in the wind. A small temple of Sagareshwara (Lord of the Sea) is located on the beach.

Located at the end of a winding hilly road and about a 45 minute ride from Sagareshwar is Shiroda Beach. A less explored and virgin region of the Konkan, Shiroda beach is carpeted with silvery white sands, cool blue waters and gentle sea breeze.

Other places to explore enroute – Nivati Beach , Redi Beach & Sawantwadi

We reached Goa at 4 pm. Our stay was in Anjuna, North Goa. Having checked in our guest house and freshening up, we spent the evening at Vagator Beach. If you are a party going person; then this is definitely the place for you with rave parties going till the wee hours of night. We somehow managed to find our small corner of happiness on this crowded beach

DAY 6, 7 & 8 – GOA, GOA & ONLY GOA

Hurray!! Finally in Goa. Yes, the much awaited destination. You have to plan these 3 days well depending on where you wish to stay between North & South Goa. These will again depend on your travel taste and what you want to experience in Goa. For peace and solitude, and offbeat experiences, head to South Goa.

We will share in short how we spent our 3 days in Goa –

Day 1 – We explored places which were near our guest house from Anjuna. Overall distance covered 40 kms exploring Baga beach, Sinquerim Fort, Reis Magos Fort, Fontainhas & Chapora. You must try Fruit Salad with Ice Cream at Scarlet Juice Centre, Chapora.

Day 2 – This day we rode 85 kms to South Goa to experience kayaking in the backwaters of Cola Beach . Cola beach is one of those offbeat destinations, where the beautiful blue lagoon meets the unstoppable wave of the Arabian sea.

You can rent a kayak for 30 minutes to surf through the backwater at Rs 150 only.

On your way back to North Goa, if you are able to reach before dusk take the route through Parra Road .  Lined with palm trees and fields on both sides, end your day watching the magical sunset.

Day 3 – An impulsive decision and we were riding towards Ribandar Jetty from where a ferry (free of cost) would take us to Chorao Island . Having done with beaches we wanted to explore something different. It seemed we had escaped into a sleepily quaint, laid-back and picturesque village from a different era with its Portuguese-styled manors and churches. It is also home to the offbeat Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary .

Once done with the island, we headed straight towards Morjim Beach to have lunch at Smoke Fish Cafe (8975557019) The restaurant is run by a family on the terrace serving authentic Goan homemade cuisine. One of the best foods we had in Goa.

We ended our last day shopping at Anjuna Flea Market and then taking a quiet walk on Anjuna Beach retrospecting on our journey from day one. This road trip had been one of the best things in life we had experienced.

Two more days on the road still…. The journey was not over yet.

DAY 9 – GOA to MURUD (DAPOLI)

Route – Goa~Kankavli~Chiplun~Khed~Dapoli~Murud (392 kms)

This was a long ride for us. Almost did 400 kms. We took NH66, the four lane Mumbai-Goa highway till Khed and then took a diversion towards Dapoli.

When we had halted at Sangameshwar for lunch, we decided not to stay in any of the hotels on the highway but instead chose to ride a few extra kilometers and stay on the beach. It was as if the sea was calling us back to the coastal route. So I called Aviraj Niwas, a homestay at Murud Beach in Dapoli where I had stayed earlier and immediately booked a room.

The highway is in good condition from Goa to Kankavli and you will enjoy riding on this four lane highway cruising at 60 kmph. After Lanja the road turns into a two lane. And you have to ride carefully as the road widening work is in progress and there are diversions every few meters.

These bumpy roads were tiring for both of us. But as soon as we left the highway and took a diversion to Dapoli we felt relief. We were once again riding on the coastal route. The sky at the sunset formed a perfect backdrop for a ride along the winding road. And in no time the moon slowly climbed up and casted its silvery reflection.

DAY 10 – MURUD (DAPOLI) to MUMBAI

Route – Murud~Dapoli~Mandangad~Tol Phata~Mangaon~Mumbai (250 kms)

Tired, but still we got up early in the morning as we had to go to Murud Beach for Dolphin Safari. We decided on this at dinner last night while talking to our host. He assured us that dolphins are guaranteed to be seen. So we thought of taking a chance. We did see a few of them after a long wait in the middle of the sea. The ferryman was kind enough not to drop us at shore without the sighting of dolphins.

Murud is a small town with a scenic and long stretch of beach dotted with crab holes and swaying palms. It also has many beach resorts situated amidst coconut plantations.

Olive Ridley Sea Turtles have also been spotted here

We explored a new route for our last day on the road. From Dapoli market, we took a left turn towards Mandangad . It took us to Mangaon on NH66 through internal village roads.

Returning home after being 10 days on the road was a bit depressing. I remembered one of John Denver’s compositions, ‘’ Hey, it’s good to be back home again”.

This homecoming was quite different from all the others I’ve had in my life. Coming home conjures up numerous emotions, and we were returning home with pleasant memories.

A Konkan Coast Itinerary | Mumbai to Harihareshwar

Harihareshwar Beach

A Mumbai Harihareshwar road trip itinerary

One is spoilt for choice during the monsoons in Maharashtra. The Sahyadris are resplendent with lush neon foliage and thick mist. The roads are freshly washed. The lakes are brimming over. Everyone and everything appears joyous and full of promise. It is as if life is renewed. There is no better way to enjoy this than a road trip, but rest assured, everyone else has had the same idea. You’ll be lucky to find any available hotel rooms at all during the weekends in the monsoon.

We chose Harihareshwar to do a Konkan Coast drive, because, well… a room was available at the MTDC resort. All in all, it turned out to be a memorable trip, because we stumbled upon a great route on our way back. Much like the Sagari Mahamarg MSH4 route we did earlier. We will also go via part of MSH4 in this route.

Mumbai to Harihareshwar: The normal route

From Mumbai to Harihareshwar, we used the direct and faster route—NH66—which takes about 5 hours. We did the coastal route on our way back to Mumbai from Harihareshwar. Of course, you can do it in reverse, but I prefer doing the longer, more arduous route on the way back home. Moreover, in terms of logistics and timings, it worked out perfectly. (Check-out time + drive time + ferry time = back home time). I’ll explain as we go along.

Harihareshwar: Things to do

road trip to konkan

Our stay at MTDC was pleasant. It’s an expansive property, as most MTDC hotels are, with very cosy rooms and a great sea view. The food was better too, as was the mobile signal strength. All in all, a good stay.

Harihareshwar to Mumbai: The Konkan Coast route

As I said, we did the Konkan Coast drive on our way back from Harihareshwar to Mumbai. It was plenty of fun! We drove by the sea for almost all of the route and crossed a lot many villages and farms with local people going about their business.  The traffic on the road was merely packs of stay dogs, herds of goats, cows, buffaloes, chickens, and one time, even a snake! We stopped to explore some random ruins and temples along the way. Every now and then we stopped for hot and spicy vada pavs and chai. It was pure bliss!

Largely, we drove past the following beaches on our Harihareshwar to Mumbai coastal road trip

Kondvil Beach

Kondvil was an isolated beach with only a nariyalwala plying his wares. The beach is black sand and silty, so not so much fun, but you can while away a few minutes, savouring the waves, and the general lack of civilization. Nearby is Shrivardhan Beach which is more popular but involves a slight detour.

Diveagar Beach

Another lovely, secluded beach on the way, with white sand, some watersports, and the occasional viewing of starfish and crabs. The nearby Sarve waterfall point usually has a waterfall during the monsoons, but it hadn’t been raining the week we went and so, we didn’t see anything.

Dighi-Agaradanda Ferry

I find travelling in local ferries a lot of fun. We made it just in time for the 1 PM ferry which left Dighi (the next was at 2:30 PM and would’ve majorly upset our plans) and crossed the river in less than 30 min to reach the other end (Agardanda jetty). Agardanda is a village in the Murud Janjira Taluka, located 9 km south of Murud.

The advantage of the ferry is not only that it saves time and driving effort, but also it directly connects to NH -17. Not to mention, one can savour the cool sea breeze and the car gets a break too.

Murud-Janjira

Murud Janjira Fort

The Murud Janjira Fort is situated on an oval-shaped rock off the Arabian Sea coast near the port city of Murud. It is an impressive fort with several of its rooms, sculptures, and cannons intact. It is accessible by sailboats from Rajapuri jetty but was shut when we visited (Covid-19 restrictions, of course).

Nagaon Beach

The Nagaon beach is located 9 km from Alibaug and is the cleanest of the lot. The beach is 3 km long and there are plenty of cosy homestays around if you have an impulse to experience local life.

One can also visit Kashid (famous for bird watching) and Kihim beaches on the way to Alibaug.

Alibaug, the headquarter of the Raigad district, where all the beaches we drove past are located, is also a city where the second homes of several affluent Mumbai residents are located. Many of them are rented out to tourists. Alibaug is home to a Radisson which is a popular Mumbai offsite destination. Places to check out in Alibaug are the Alibaug Beach, the Varsoli Beach and, just offshore, the 17th-century Kolaba Fort.

We took the Ro-Pax Ferry back from Mandva Jetty in Alibaug to Mumbai. Despite this being Covid times, the ferry was FULL. Food and drinks (including alcohol) are served on board. There is an airconditioned area and open-air seating as well. Overall, despite the crowd, it was a fun breezy journey through 19km of sea. The sailing time is 1 hour, and the journey shaves off about an hour of your drive from Alibaug to Mumbai, although, it isn’t much cheaper. Cancellations happen, so even if bookings show full online for a particular slot, keep on checking for openings. Report at least 15 minutes before departure time.

A Road Trip to Konkan

Our 2018 December vacation was a road trip to Konkan on the Maharashtra coast from Bangalore and back. Yes, we always wanted to do a road trip in our Beamer.  This trip was not only about enjoying the car but the joy of exploring beautiful golden beaches, picturesque coastal villages and savouring traditional Konkan food, prompted us to go ahead. Additionally, having our car handy all the time was a real boon in an area like Konkan. So a road trip it was going to be.

The EverChanging Landscape

Who says it is always the destination which counts! Sometimes the journey too can be as interesting as the destination 🙂 This road trip to Konkan was beckoning us to explore the ever changing landscape as we passed along the Karnataka-Maharashtra border. As we kept on driving, not only the topography change but also we witnessed a perceptible change in the social and cultural landscape – the farmlands, the crops, the villages along the way, the dress, the temple architecture, the houses  – everything kept changing as we cruised along. Not only that, but to our good fortune, the food too changed flavours and texture as we entered Maharastra.

Experiencing this firsthand was possible only because of the road trip that we took, which was a gorgeous, no-hassle drive with good roads and amenities throughout.

The Road trip to Konkan from Bangalore

This is the route we took when we started from North Bangalore:

Bangalore-Mangalore Highway (NH75) –> NH48. Continue on NH48 for almost all of the 7-8 hour drive –> Belgaum –> Ganapatipule in Konkan We stayed overnight at Belgaum before proceeding to Konkan coast the next morning. Our itinerary was planned to the hilt but we had to change it last minute to accomodate some unwanted events – which I can, however, call a blessing in disguise.

5-Day Itinerary of our Konkan Road Trip

1) Drive from Belgaum in Karnataka to Ganapatipule in Konkan and make that our base for the next 3 days.  2) That was to be followed by driving to Dapoli, some 4 hours away up north and spending another 2 days there. Finally, we planned to spend our last leg of the vacation in Mahabaleshwar, a picturesque hillstation in the Sahyadris, before returning to Bangalore.

Ganapatipule – A Small Temple Town

Ganapatipule temple during our road trip to Konkan

This little seaside village got its name due to the popular Ganapati Swayambhu temple, which is situated right next to its beach. This small little temple town boasts of gorgeous coconut-fringed beaches, a Prachin Konkan Museum which depicts the culture and traditional practices of the land and of course, some lipsmacking local cuisine.

Tip: One can buy conches and shaligram (holy stone) from the Prachin Konkan museum.

There are breathtaking views and beaches at every 5 min drive from the main part of the town. Ganapatipule beach, Aarey Waare Beach, Malgund beach are all pristine beauties with white sandy stretches spreading across miles.

A beautiful beach with hills in the background. A view on our Konkan road trip.

The beaches are no doubt gorgeous but being the foodies that we are, what we loved the most in Ganapatipule was the local Brahmani thali and the fresh snack items found in almost all eateries all throughout the day!

Maharashtrian Thalis in Ganapatipule

Bhau Joshi Bhojanalay ( 087669 47019 ) and Mehendela’s Swad Dining (094224 32776 ) are two such eateries which literally served mind-blowing authentic fare. Take a look for yourself and drool 😋😋😋

Food served in a steel thali. Numerous vaatis of vegetables, dal along with salad is served with chapatis.

I can safely say that Ganapatipule was a culinary destination for us more than a sightseeing destination. We ate and ate and in between did a quick day trip to the nearby Ratnagiri as well 😁 . Visiting Tilak Ali Museum , the birthplace of Lokmanya Tilak and the Ratnagiri fort , is time well spent. The drive to Ratnagiri was scenic and the town is also a good place to shop for Alphonso mango preserves like aamras, aam papad, aamba burfi, and even dry chutneys, kokum agal and syrups.

Lokmanya Tilak's Family House in Ratnagiri

This was the next leg of our road trip to Konkan and not Dapoli as was planned. Man proposes and God (or Destiny) disposes.

It is another story why we couldn’t reach Dapoli at all. Our car burst a tire in the middle of a jungle while we were on our way to Dapoli. We could drive for more than 40 minutes in that situation  (thanks to tubeless tires!) to the nearest Shringartali village where a car garage helped us assess the situation and figure out an alternative plan. The tyre was to be replaced the next day as the nearest dealer for that type of tyre was in Pune. So deciding against driving to our hotel in Dapoli which was another 65 kms away, we decided to check in at the nearby resort – Mango Village in Guhagar .

We were glad that we stayed back at Guhagar instead of driving up all the way to Dapoli. Mango Village Resort is indeed a lovely place tucked away near the scenic Guhagar beach. Little independant bungalows dotted the resort village with a restaurant that again served mouth-wateringly delicious local food. A small clubhouse, a play ground and a Ganesh temple at one end of the resort completed the ‘village’ feel.

Mango Village Resort in Guhagar. The resort is made up of independant small houses

Guhagar Beach

The best part of Guhagar is its beach. This gorgeous white sandy beach stretches for around 6kms in a straight line till it merges with the horizon at one end. A silhouette of a whitewashed temple at the other end  with the setting sun in the background reaffirms the beauty of the entire landscape. The serenity, solitude and beauty of the beach during the golden hour of the  sunset made all of us feel really light-hearted and happy. It is difficult to describe in words how vastly this magnanimous nature can influence us lesser mortals!

road trip to konkan

The beach was spotlessly clean and was flocked by sea gulls at one spot. The setting sun casting its orange light on the flapping sea gulls made for a lovely sight. One can easily spend hours there gazing at the blue sea, enjoying the breeze and doing nothing. It is a must-visit spot if you are in Guhagar. We spend a lovely evening there chasing the sea gulls and leaving our footprints to be washed away over time.

Tip: Guhagar is a small village with a lovely beach and a couple of lakes nearby. It is a retreat for a perfect relaxing weekend. So do not expect many commercial activities and establishments like water sports, restaurants and the usual buzz in there.

Monsoon road trip across konkan coast, maharashtra.

A monsoon road trip is one of the most romantic things to do. If you live on the Konkan coast as I do, then it has to be on your list to do every monsoon. Last year, during the Monsoons, we explored the Amboli Ghat and Sawantwadi .

Konkan Coast of Maharashtra

This year we thought of extending our drive to Ganpatipule and exploring the Ratnagiri region of Maharashtra.

Konkan Coast Road Trip landscape view

Konkan Coast Road Trip during Monsoons

On a Sunday Morning, we started driving from our home in Panaji . It was a perfect setting. The rain was pouring. Kishore Kumar was singing the perfect road trip songs. It almost felt that music composers knew the rhythm of rainfall would take the magic of these songs to another level.

Hazy monsoon roads of Konkan Coast

With low visibility, everything in view was hazy on this monsoon road trip. The rivulets across the road trip were full of water, flowing with an impatience to meet the sea that is not too far. We stopped by a few of them to see the small dams on them, to see the trees bent down to kiss the waters, to see the river making its way through whatever came in its way. Rows of coconut trees stood getting soaked in the rain like young boys being given a bath by their mothers. We passed by small villages and towns, some familiar, some not, on the road trip. There were hardly any people on the road, for only the crazy would be out in such incessant rains.

Lush green Konkan coast

We knew there would be many waterfalls hidden in the foliage of the Western Ghats on the way during our road trip. Our eyes were searching for them and what a treat we got!

Savdav Dabdaba or Waterfall on Konkan Coast

Savdav Waterfalls

A road sign about 60 km from Sawantwadi indicated that there is a waterfall. A few km down the road another board guided us to the 6 km detour for the Savdav waterfall. We started driving on the road leading to the waterfall. No other boards followed and we kept driving on the single-lane but the beautiful road in the hope that the waterfall will make an appearance soon. After a while, we saw some travelers coming back all drenched and we knew we are not too far from the Savdav waterfalls.

Savdav waterfall becoming a river

At first sight, it looked like a small waterfall but what made it look beautiful was the sheer green surroundings. It seemed to be emerging from the treetops and then getting lost in them again. We took some steps down to reach its base and it is then that the waterfall appeared in all its majestic form. It is a lovely waterfall, part of a river cascading down some 50 feet in one go.

Then, it takes small cascades negotiating the rocks below before it again flows like a calm, well-behaved river. Families and groups of friends played with the water. They jumped into the river for a swim. Most importantly, they posed for perfect selfies.

Savdav Waterfalls

We spent some time admiring the waterfall – standing in the mist-like spray the water created as it hit the rock below. I also enjoyed the fun everyone was having there. It was like standing at the waterfall of happiness.

Top View of Savdav Waterfall

Top view of Savdav Waterfalls

We came back to the road and that is when I noticed a tower that looked like a water tank. Following my gut I climbed the slippery tower, I had a hunch that I would get a top view of the waterfall. My efforts were well rewarded. The top view of the waterfalls is something that I would remember forever. It was a bright green cover to the horizon before my eyes. Right in the middle this milky white waterfall flows and I could hear its roar right up on the tower.

As my eyes and camera focus, we could see the small stream that took the shape of the waterfall when the gradient on earth decided to make a sudden change. It was a blissful sight to watch. All I could see was the grey of the sky, the green of the earth, and a milky white waterfall.

Street food

Konkan Coast Street Food

We had been driving for a few hours now with frequent stops and it was time for a food stop. What is better than freshly fried Onion bhajis and Aaloo vada’s when it is water all around? We savored them with a piping hot cup of tea. Who would not agree that Chai, Pakora, and rains are a lethal combination? And this combo is tastiest on a roadside stall where the pakoras come straight out of the pan to your plate.

Savdav Waterfalls Video, Kankavali, Sindhudurg

Watch the video of the waterfalls, and listen to the roaring sound it creates.

We again started driving towards our destination of the day – Ganpatipule.

Barring the gray of the road and the melancholic gray of the sky, it was all green all around us. The paddy fields had their own shade of green that competed with the green of coconut trees. The Stones and pavements decided not to be left behind – they also covered themselves in fresh green moss.

Rajapur Ganga Waterfalls on Konkan Coast

Rajapur Ganga Waterfalls

Another signboard vaguely mentioned Rajpur Ganga. We had no idea what it meant, but since it was a brown signboard we kept our eyes open. Suddenly we saw a huge waterfall pass by. We stopped, reversed, and parked our car next to the bikes strategically parked in front of the waterfall.

Rajapur Ganga Waterfalls

This was Rajpur Ganga – a twin-step waterfall quietly flowing right by the side of the road. If you are not vigilant enough, you are bound to miss the beauty.

Bikes, Roads & Waterfalls - Konkan Coast

I loved the way some bikers parked their bikes on the road before they lost themselves in the serene waterfall.

Rajapur Ganga Waterfalls Video, Ratnagiri

Watch the video of Rajapur Ganga Waterfalls by the side of NH 66.

It was already evening and we resisted the temptation to stop at smaller waterfalls that had started appearing on the road.

Ganpatipule

View of Konkan Coast from hilltop temple

Just before dusk, we managed to reach our resort ( Blue Ocean Resort & Spa ) in Malgund, 4 km from Ganpatipule. We were welcomed here by anyone else but Ganapati. Before the sun said goodbye we just managed to visit the beach opposite the resort. We then hiked a bit to the temple on a hillock within the resort. The vast sea surrounded by a strip of green was enchanting, to say the least. The drum beats of the Ganapati temple accentuated the environment.

After spending some time at the hilltop, we were ready to retire to recharge our batteries. There was so much more to explore in this part of the coast in the next three days.

Konkan is an absolute delight in the rains. Glad to know about these waterfalls, Anuradha.

Can not agree more with you Niranjan…For us too these waterfalls were a discovery. Stay tuned for more of them.

Excellent expressed with simple words..I’m now a regular follower of your blog…Thanks for sharing your experience..Just move on…Best wishes…

Thanks Amitava. Please do keep sharing your thoughts so that I know you are reading.

I don’t have the words to appreciate the pristine beauty of the Konkan coast that you have captured in words and videos. I don’t remember if you have written about Revdanda (my birth place) which has 8km long sea shore and a Portuguese fort and Chaul (an ancient port trading with Rome) with numerous temples. Please visit and do write about them if you have not already done so. One quibble ‘dabdaba’ should be ‘dhabdhaba.’

Thanks Srinivas for your kind words. I was not aware of Revdanda but I will search for it and put it on my wish list. Can you share more information about its location and the temple names?

Lovely. Though I can’t understand why every waterfall makes people want to take a public shower.

Thanks. I guess basic instinct from the days when humans used to take bath in naturally flowing water only 🙂

Now I know what you mean by “the greens of Konkan coast” 😀

Ami, no camera can capture what the eyes saw – the colors of fresh green.

Your skill to narrate something is really nice. Konkan is awesome in Monsoon.

Thank you so much Tejas. Stay connected.

it’s awesome…. Excellent expressed with simple words.. Lovely!!

Thank you Amit. Glad that you enjoyed reading the post on Konkan Coast.

The Ultimate Konkan Bike Tour - A Motorcycle Escapade through Coastal Trails and Cultural Wonders

Coastal Konkan Bike Trip

Photo of Sonya V. Anchan

Idea for this trip started bursting in my mind when we were zooming past on bikes from Anjarle to Harnai beach in Konkan Coast. It was such a splendid view, that my mind just couldn’t take it out. Eventually, I had to take it out and discuss with my friend about possibility of exploring whole Konkan coast on bikes, as taking a four-wheeler would have turned out to be a liability at places where ferries had to be opted. So, plan was chalked out, of course with the help of Google map, trying to find out each and every minute, road-detail of the coast.

Plan was kept simple, only bikes, few like-minded people, explore whatever interesting comes by, halt wherever night drops-in and lastly as much as possible only roads lined by beach to be taken. Initially, our idea was to night-halt at beach, open up tents and sleep under beautiful open sky with peaceful sound of waves chiming on the background. But, we had few ladies in the group and for our comfort and sanitation; we decided to halt in homely economical accommodations that are offered in every beach by the generous and helpful villagers. So, with all details and required papers (map), we gathered at Panvel at 10.30 p.m. on Thursday, 05th April, 2012. 6th being Public holiday it was an advantage for office-goers like us, since we can avail a long leave for weekend. Till last moment, there was uncertainty about who will join and drop out at last moment, still, we managed five bikers with 5 pillions and saddle bags mounted on bikes.

We started our venture by 12.30 a.m. We zoomed past Pen & Vadhkal Naka to reach Alibaug. We halted at Vadhkal naka for midnight-tea, like always. On the way, we stopped by to view the beautiful full moon and its reflection that was adorned in the sea. We had to reach Murud Janjira by 4.00 a.m. Instead, we landed up in some mahua Bagh village which was almost 18 kms away from Murud. We halted for some sleep, since next day was going to be very hectic. We found a supposed –to-be grampanchayat office veranda to put up our belongings and all dozed off in unexpectedly chilling summer night.

All of us, who assumed that it would be very hot, were in for surprise with cool weather and wished for jackets. By 5.30 a.m. Deepak was up, nudging all to get up, as per the information by a localite, the first ferry was around 7.00 a.m. On the way to Murud we got magnanimous view of Murud Janjira Fort. After a round of photo session, we continued towards Rajapuri. From here, we had to take boat to Dighi. Being a small boat, only bikes could be transported, it was a sight to view, as how the locals were actually lifting the bikes and dropping them in the boat. We had two bullets, one Avenger, one R15 & one FZ. Last one, had a painful pillion seat which was experienced by Bhaskaran. By 7.30 a.m. after loading of bikes, ferry started and in 10 minutes, we arrived at Dighi port. Here onwards, we thought of opting for Diveagar via Sarle (coast route) instead we were informed by villagers that road was closed down for repairs, hence we took the mainland route which also seemed kind of coastal. Way to Sonyacha Ganpati Temple was closed (because of some political turmoil resulting after stealing of Golden statue), hence we moved towards beach. There was usual crowd and some folks were trying parasailing. We took a short detour and jumped back on the coastal track heading towards Shriwardhan. After crossing Shriwardhan beach, we skipped Harihareshwar , because we have there umpteen number of times, we went straight to Baghmandla, from here we had to take a ferry to Vesvi. This ferry is used for transporting buses, cars, jeeps alike. We loaded our bikes and headed towards Bankot . This was a very familiar route for all of us. We are ‘regulars’ at Velas , where annually Sea Turtle Festival is conducted. So, this year it was second round for most of us. We reached Vesvi in another 10 minutes. Offloaded our bikes and headed towards Bankot. This particular patch was most terrible for bikes as it was a steep and muddy potholed-road. We reached Velas via bankot by 1.00 p.m. We halted at Velas at Mr. Joshi’s place, last time when we came, we fell in love with their chutney, hence one week prior we had told them regarding our visit, so they kept it ready. Thereafter, before biding adieu we enquired regarding the supposed ferry from Velas to Kelshi. We were saddened by the fact that now bridge construction is going on hence we have to opt for main land road via Kelshi Phata, which according to me, was a very boring and long one. It added more than 30 kms to the route. Being sunny afternoon, we halted at Kelshi Phata in one lone shop. We rested for some 30 minutes, when Darshana came banging on all of us to get up. She came up with news that being Hanuman Jayanti there would be crowd on the way to Kelshi village. We all got up hurriedly and after hydrating ourselves completely, we passed Kelshi. We could see people flocking in colourful attires for the festival. We were relieved to cross the village before the gathering, grew in number thus blocking the entire path.

On the way to Anjarle Beach, we saw Seagulls in huge number, flocked together. It was a jaw-dropping moment for me as I tried to capture each and every moment, when suddenly all of them took flight in one direction and swayed for sometimes and landed again at the same place. We halted at cliff-like place with the spectacular view of Anjarle Beach one side and Suvarnadurg on other side. We passed time by indulging in some memorable photography. Our next halt was for lunch, it was already 3.00 p.m. and being in a famed fishing village of Harnai, it was imperative for all of us to have a fish-meal. But due to time constraint, we thought of skipping it. I remember, how exhausted and with ‘hungry for years’ look, Karthik went up to the restaurant owner to ask for Fish thali, which was initially denied to us because of queue. Watching karthik’s haggard condition, the guy agreed to serve him first. Watching Karthik relish the fish, we all pounced on his thali, we all sat down for proper meal, since we had enough time to reach the next ferry, as the schedule of the ferry was informed by the restaurant owner on enquiry. Winding up lunch, we headed for Dabhol ferry. It was quite a long route. We had to pass through procession (Hanuman Jayanti) that had jam-packed the road on the way to Dabhol. We had to make it in time because the next day schedule would depend on how much we can cover before night. We reached Dabhol jetty, and we got news that Nikhil’s bike Tyre has punctured at approximately 13 kms afar from jetty and needs to be replaced. Deepak stayed back with him and informed Karthik, who had reached jetty, to get a tube for the bike from Dabhol. So instead of leaving by 7.30, all of us left by 9.00 p.m. ferry. We reached Dhopve jetty in next 10 minutes. In the meantime, accommodation and dinner was arranged at Guhagar . We reached Guhaghar in next one and half hour. After dropping our sacks, we had our dinner by 11.30 p.m. and dozed off by 12.00 midnight. Since it was a hectic yesterday, we lazily got up by 7.00 a.m. Although, I started hovering around all of them by 6.30 a.m. Guys being guys always take time to get up. By, 9.00 a.m. after breakfast, we were ready to explore another day in Konkan. We had the target to reach Tarkarli by midnight. Vyadeshwar temple was a short visit. Road to Velneshwar was very bumpy, new road was being set up, so maybe in next one year, we may have a fine road to speed. But for now, it was pathetically terrible, both for bikes and us.

We reached Velneshwar by 10.30 a.m. after continuously hopping and jumping on the road. We explored around temple and beach before heading for Hedvi. There is a peculiar ‘water column formation’ at Hedvi Bamangal shore. It was a unique nature’s creation. We photographed this phenomenon and watched the splashing water in awe. Due to shortage of time, we rushed back to Rohile Bandar Jetty. We had to catch ferry for Jaigad port. This ferry route was longer than all other ferries, took almost 20 minutes to reach, with beautiful scenery & playful dolphins splashing around.

We reached Jaigad port by 12.30 p.m. We had been to Jaigad Fort earlier. So we had a short to and fro visit and continued further to Ganpatipule. The spectacular view of pristine beaches from Jaigad to Ganpatipule was strikingly so exquisite that it dazzled our eyes. We reached Ganpatipule at 2.30 p.m. Being Saturday, it was less crowded, after darshan, we had light lunch and headed off to Vijaydurg. It was quite a long route. We were supposed to take ferry from Jaitapur to Vijaydurg. But it was not available to common people due to security reasons, hence we took mainland road for same. There was a patch of 4-5 kms of super-smooth, long, empty road. Everyone took out their urge to speed on this patch, after being continuously on alternate rocky, muddy, potholed roads. We reached Vijaydurg just on time i.e. at sunset. My lens captured the Vijaydurg-sunset.

After a brief halt, we headed to our ultimate destination of Tarkarli. We had booked out accommodation and dinner there itself. So, anyhow we had to reach there. We had to skip Kunkeshwar , as it would have been futile to explore Kunkeshwar at night. We left for Tarkarli via Malvan . On the way, some problem developed in Bullet, which took almost an hour for a solution, By 12.30 midnight, we were at Tarkarli. Next day, it was again a lazy morning, we hanged out at beach, did some photo-ops, and then decided to go for Scuba Diving at Malvan.

Malvan is at the short distance of 7 kms from Tarkarli, we left our riding gears back. Karthik and Akhsay exchanged their Bullet & Avenger respectively with each other. Don’t know whether the decision was right or wrong, but repercussion was painful. At one distinct turn, Avenger skidded and we fell off. Luckily, we escaped with some bruises, which pained like hell & further went numb when we actually dived into sea water for Scuba diving. Scuba diving took almost 4-5 hours. We came back by 2.00 p.m., had sumptuous Malvani lunch. All were set to leave. I had taken some painkiller, hoping to remain active for remaining journey but instead dozed off.

All decided to rest for some time with a short power nap. But instead, it stretched for long, and we ended up waking up at 5.00 p.m. We left malvan and reached Kankavli by 6.30 p.m. Here on, I, Poonam & Bhaskaran who was pillion to Harsh’s FZ decided to board bus to reach Mumbai . On 'false' insistence of Karthik and gang, I & Poonam opted to continue the bike trip. Bhaskaran who already was in much pain because of uncomfortable seat, left for Mumbai at Kankavli.

We had option of driving through dangerous twist and turns ghat regions of NH17 or travel 80 kms till Kolhapur to catch NH4, which is way too straight for riders. Being a night journey, guys opted for NH4. But the road till Kolhapur was like hell.

We halted at Kolhapur for midnight dinner. After riding for sometimes, riders as well as pillions were dozing off on bikes. Better sense prevailed and we halted for some good night sleep outside a shop. Got up at 5.30 a.m., sipped tea and headed towards Lonavala . After a hearty breakfast, we reached Mumbai in the afternoon. I had to skip office on Monday, for which I had to sacrifice my ears for mouthful of taunts on Tuesday by my bosses. With my usual casual attitude, matter died down faster than expected.

Notwithstanding, this trip was worth everything. To achieve this feat in 3 Days and Four nights and limited budget was what we planned for and it was a grand achievement to begin with!
