Best things to do and see in Rome

A free walking tour is one of the best ways to visit Rome , the historical city rich with culture and unmatchable in its beauty. Some people may feel like they are in one of the largest outdoor museums in the world because of its multitude of churches, squares, monuments, and amazing fountains along with its Mediterranean cuisine that embodies the local flavors. Getting to know this city with the help of a local guide will aid you in discovering all those mandatory stops to visit and some of the lesser-known gems this amazing city has to offer.

Visiting a city of this magnitude is a real challenge, and is why we recommend different routes that offer alternatives and less crowded routes to get the most out of your guided visit to popular destinations like; The Coliseum, Saint Peter’s Basilica, The Roman Forum, the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, The Vatican Museum, or Navona Square. There are guided visits in Rome which focus on the Sistine Chapel, Castel Sant’Angelo, the stairway to the Spanish Square, the Villa Borghese, the Trastevere, the People’s Square, (Piazza del Pópolo) and even the interesting street culture at the Campo de' Fiori Square. You can read more about best things to do and see in Rome.

If you would like more information about what it’s like to do a free tour in Rome in the morning, afternoon, or evening , you can read up on the opinons of other walkers who have already done a guided tour with GuruWalk. Often times, those who have done one end up coming back to the page to find another free guided tour we offer, especially when they want to learn more about other beautiful Italian cities like Genoa, Venice, Milan or Palermo.

We are a group of local walking tour guides who lead daily walking tours throughout Rome.

We have also written several self-guided walks as well as audio tours of the city.

This model of free tours is that they are technically free to take and there is no obligation to pay anything at the end.

However, they are popularly understood as pay-what-you-like tours. How much you pay is dependent on you.

You can pay what you think your walk was worth or what you could afford at the tour’s end.

According to online reviews, most participants contribute between €10 to €20 per adult to the tour guide when they feel the tour was good.

Just about all of the companies have local guides who grew up in Rome or nearby.

We also offer tours throughout Italy including:

ANCIENT ROME FREE WALKING TOURS

These free walking tours cover notable historic sites which, in some cases, date back more than two millennia.

If you’re interested in learning why Rome is called the Eternal City, these tours will give you plenty of information about how this city became home to one of the most remarkable empires in the history of the world.

Learn about the emperors who ruled over the Roman Empire and the gladiators who entertained the masses.

Here are a few of the ancient sites you can expect to see on these tours:

  • Roman Forum
  • Palatine Hill
  • Capitoline Hill
  • Circus Maximus

You will also see not-so-ancient sights such as Piazza Venezia and the Campidoglio.

This walk is an abridged version of our Ancient Rome audio tour. Listen to a sample of the tour.

There is no schedule (take our tours anytime you wish). We also have an audio tour of Central Rome.

  • Purchase this audio tour from our Booking Page  (scroll down to Rome).
  • You’ll receive a confirmation email with a .pdf, Google Map link, and audio tour.
  • Enjoy the tour(s).

For more information, check out our self-guided tour of the Roman Fori .

The free tours will not include admission to any of the attractions listed above and cover them from viewing platforms.

You can purchase tickets for them either before or after your free tour.

However, the free tours cover areas not usually covered on the paid tours, including the Imperial Roman fora.

The paid tours, on the other hand, all include tickets to the Colosseum, Forum, and Palatine Hill.

Reservations are required for all tours.

FREE CENTRAL ROME TOURS

These free walking tours focus on the centre of Rome, such as the baroque squares and fountains and Renaissance architecture, rather than ancient Rome.

While some of the sites you’ll see are very old, this type of tour is about both helping first-time visitors become more familiar with the city and covering some of the history of Rome.

Join licensed Rome tour guide, Sara from Rome Tour Guide on a walk on and around the Spanish Steps.

If you’re looking for an introductory tour that provides a look at a wide variety of attractions and historical landmarks, central Rome tours are an excellent option.

  • Vatican Museums Tour
  • Sistine Chapel Tour
  • St. Peter’s Basilica Tour

FREE ROME FOOD TOURS

Currently, there is only one company offering free food tours in Rome, and they focus on three neighbourhoods in the city: the Jewish Ghetto, Trastevere, and Monti.

Free Rome Food Tours

Each of these outings includes at least 3-4 stops at great restaurants and food shops where you’ll find some of the best dishes in the city.

The foods you will try on these tours vary quite a bit depending on which neighbourhood they cover, but most outings will cover some of the following options:

  • Parmigiano Reggiano

Although you don’t have to pay for the tour, you will have to pay for any food you might purchase along the way, and you should expect to spend around €10-€15 on average.

The nice thing is that even if you tip them another €10-€15 for the tour, you’ll still spend significantly less on this than you typically would on a paid Rome food tour.

In addition to their free walking tours, this company also provides 2-hour pay-what-you-wish food tours which allow you to pick and choose the dishes you will try.

Their Trastevere food tour is offered on both Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11 am.

You can also take their Old Jewish Ghetto food tour on both Wednesdays and Fridays at 11 am.

Alternatively, you may also want to consider their Monti food tour on Mondays through Thursdays + Saturdays at 16:00 (4 pm). It also sometimes runs on Mondays at 11:00 am.

Paid Rome Food Tours

If you’re looking for a different kind of food tour or one that covers another area of the city, there are several paid options to choose from.

While some outings cover specific types of dishes such as street food, others provide a look at the best places to grab a bite in the city centre, Testaccio, and many other locations in Rome.

Ticket prices range from €40-€100 and some services offer small or private tour groups so that you’ll get the full attention of your guide.

Take a look at this list of paid Rome food tours to find one you like.

If you’re looking for another option, consider our self-guided Rome food tour .

ROME NIGHT AND GHOST TOURS

Rome is wonderful at all hours but Rome at dusk and by night is magical.

There are a few free night tours available most evenings as well as several ticketed tours, including tours of the Colosseum and the Vatican .

When daylight starts to fade, our passionate guides will show you the most authentic heart of Rome when it starts to emerge: the crowds thin, the locals come out and the monuments seem to exhale as they see off the last visitors and dress up in nighttime lighting.

This night tour runs daily at 20:30 (8:30 pm).

Ghost and Mystery Tours

There are usually a couple of pay-what-you-wish ghost or mystery/dark Rome tours available multiple times a week, if not daily.

We offer a daily ghost tour on weekdays @ 21:00 (9 pm). You can book this tour here .

Click here for even more options .

FREE TOURS WITH TOURIST PASSES

A tourist pass (or city pass) bundles together several tours and attractions into one discounted ticket or gives you discounted entry.

If you are considering purchasing a tourist pass, keep in mind that some might come with free walking tours already included.

Rome City Centre Free Tour

Explore some of Rome’s most beautiful sights on this 2-hour free walking tour

ABOUT THE Rome City Centre Free Tour

The Rome City Centre Free Tour is operated by New Rome Free Tour

On this 2-hour free walking tour, you’ll discover the magic of Rome’s bustling streets, sweeping squares and baroque fountains, with architecture dating from the Roman Empire, through the Renaissance and beyond. Your fully-licensed, expert local guide will show you Rome’s most beautiful sights, such as the awe-inspiring Pantheon and the iconic, romantic Trevi Fountain - with much more in between!

The Rome City Centre Free Tour starts on the Piazza di Spagna, at the bottom of the Spanish Steps, and ends at the Trevi Fountain.

The Eternal City

While the ancient Rome of Caesars and gladiators may be the city’s initial drawcard, Rome’s Renaissance and Baroque makeovers have left an equally indelible mark on the city’s iconic streets and squares. From the elegant beauty of the magnificent Spanish Steps, to Bernini’s famous fountains on the picturesque Piazza Navona, you’ll see that the “Eternal City” is deserving of its name. Stroll along Rome’s fashion boulevards, the Via Condotti and Vie del Corso, window-shopping the exclusive boutiques as your guide leads you to more of Rome’s must-sees!

Domes, Frescoes and a return to Rome

As the epicentre of the Roman Catholic faith, it’s unsurprising that Rome has some of the world’s most significant churches to be discovered. Marvel at the Pantheon, the striking, circular Roman temple that has been a Catholic church for over 600 years and visit the Church of Saint Ignatius with Andrea Pozzo’s incredible trompe-l’oeil ceiling frescoes. Let your local guide give away the best tips for enjoying Rome’s culinary delights of pizza, gelato and tiramisu before heading to the famous Trevi Fountain to end the tour, not forgetting to throw a coin and make your wish to return to Rome!

Tours in Rome are offered by our partners, New Rome Free Tour. While you may not see the famous SANDEMANs red umbrellas (look instead for the New Rome Free Tour signs), we only work with partners we know, trust, and who have been vetted by us to ensure they meet the same standards you are used to enjoying in SANDEMANs’ own cities. You Can Now Visit Mussolini’s Underground Bunker in Rome

The dictator constructed the shelters below his family’s residence after Italy entered World War II

Sarah Kuta

Daily Correspondent

Underground bunker

In June 1940, Italian troops invaded the French Alps, marking the country’s entry into World War II. Behind the scenes, crews began building underground shelters to protect the fascist dictator  Benito Mussolini and his family.

Now, 84 years later, the bunkers beneath Villa Torlonia , Mussolini’s home in Rome, have reopened to the public. Visitors can book 50-minute guided tours of the subterranean complex, which features an immersive multimedia exhibition.

This is not the first time members of the public have been allowed to visit the shelters. They opened for two years beginning in 2006, and occasional tours were offered in the years that followed, reports  CNN ’s Julia Buckley.

Old door that says porta anti-gas

Mussolini lived at Villa Torlonia from 1929 to 1943 . The villa was also home to his wife, Rachele, and the couple’s children, Edda, Vittorio, Bruno, Romano and Anna Maria, according to Forbes ’ Jim Dobson.

When Italy entered the war, crews built three underground structures to protect Mussolini and his family from aerial bombings. They began work on the first one in 1940, when they repurposed an old wine cellar situated underneath a small lake on the property.

The following year, they built an air raid shelter in the basement of Casino Nobile, one of the villa’s buildings. They reinforced the walls with four-foot-thick concrete, installed an air purification and exchange system and added gas-tight doors.

Finally, in late 1942, they began building an armored bunker nearly 20 feet underground in front of Casino Nobile. It was shaped like a cross and protected by a 13-foot-thick layer of concrete—but it was never finished. By the time Mussolini was  arrested on July 25, 1943, workers hadn’t yet installed watertight doors, bathrooms or a ventilation system.

Large stately building with columns

The city of Rome purchased the property in 1977 and opened it to the public in 1978. Today, it’s a museum and a park.

On the tours, visitors can walk inside the air raid shelter and bunker beneath Casino Nobile, though the repurposed wine cellar remains off-limits. As they wander through the two structures, they’ll see images projected on the walls and hear sounds meant to transport them back in time.

The exhibition begins with Mussolini’s life at Villa Torlonia, where he hosted parties, ceremonies, tennis matches and other events. Next, visitors will learn about Italy’s entry into the war and what hiding out in a bunker during a bombing would have been like.

Exhibition of underground bunker

Rome suffered 51 Allied bombings between July 1943 and May 1944. The exhibition recalls these raids, with a particular focus on those that occurred in the city’s  San Lorenzo neighborhood , which killed  more than 3,000 people.

A series of projections also shows the “double perspective of those who bomb and do not perceive the effects from above, and those who suffer the consequences from below,” according to the  tour website , via Google Translate.

At the end of the tour, visitors climb down a steep staircase into the unfinished bunker, where curators have added sounds and ground vibrations to simulate the experience of an air raid.

Netflix is setting the Ton abuzz as the streamer unveils plans for a major global tour tied to Bridgerton ‘s highly-anticipated third season focusing on the love story of Penelope Featherington ( Nicola Coughlan ) and Colin Bridgerton ( Luke Newton ), a.k.a. Polin.

The streamer teased the tour on social media, unveiling a lengthy list of locations that the stars are set to visit in celebration of the latest chapter in Shondaland’s Regency-era hit. Among the cities included in the lineup are Amsterdam, Bowral, Dublin & Galway, Johannesburg, London, New York, Rio De Janeiro, Toronto, Verona, and Warsaw.

'Bridgerton' Season 3 world tour locations

Additional details beyond the slate of global cities have not been unveiled at this time, but the tour essentially kicked off this past weekend in Australia where Coughlan and Newton made an appearance as the Bowral-based screening of the first Season 3 episode.

No dates have been set alongside these locations, so fans will have to wait and see when the show’s tour will be hitting up a spot close to them. Additionally, this global adventure will include press appearances, fan interactions, and exclusive screenings, so stay tuned for more details about how you can take part in the fun.

In Australia, Coughlan and Newton were joined by Season 3 showrunner Jess Brownell as they surprised fans at an epic screening and took part in plenty of press coverage. With a two-part season, a major promotional tour makes total sense as fans eagerly await new episodes through the summer when Part 2 is slated to drop on June 13th.

Part 1 will drop a month earlier on May 16th, making way for the start of Polin’s romance, which will see Penelope accept Colin’s help when he offers to aid in her search for a husband, unaware that their lessons will have a unique effect on him. Don’t miss it for yourself, keep an eye out for more details on the major tour, and additional coverage here on TV Insider as we approach the Part 1 premiere.

Liz Truss at the Heritage Foundation, Washington DC, 22 April 2024.

Fair to say America isn’t gripped by Liz Trussmania. Here’s what she can learn from Mr Bean

Emma Brockes

Our former PM has a dire warning and a book to sell, but it isn’t really cutting through. A bit more Brit-style bumbling might help

‘I know the name,” texts a friend when I ask if she knows who Liz Truss is, but like most Americans can’t quite put her finger on why. “Like 8%,” guesses another when I ask her to put a number on how many of her countrymen she imagines know of Truss. The standard response, in my extremely unscientific poll of Americans as to whether or not they know of Truss, however, was: “No, should I?” – the answer to which, of course, depends entirely on whether you want to understand why the Tory party is polling around 20% or whether you happen to be Liz Truss.

Truss, the only one of us to suffer that particular misfortune, was in Washington DC this week trying, like so many minor British celebrities before her, to catch the eye of the Americans. At the Heritage Foundation, a rightwing thinktank that hosted the launch of Truss’s book Ten Years to Save the West , she came bearing a “warning”. Not an ideal ice-breaker, perhaps, but one clearly tailored to an audience receptive to the frisson of the term “forces of the global left”.

She then provided a perfect illustration of how British people try to win over Americans. “I like to think of the United States of America as Britain’s greatest invention,” said Truss, a piece of comic rank-pulling that relies, for the joke to land, on the delusion that Britain is central to American thinking or penetrates American consciousness at all. Even the sorts of Americans who show up to events at the Heritage Foundation must have been politely baffled by this.

Still, it’s possible Truss did better than the other British export trying and failing to win over Americans this month. Blur’s performance at Coachella last week – and particularly that of Damon Albarn – delivered the timeless drama of a man’s idea of himself crashing into a rival and more widely held view. “You’re never seeing us again, so you might as well fucking sing it,” shouted Albarn when, during a rendition of Girls & Boys, he tried to get a call and response off the ground and the crowd remained largely unresponsive. “Know what I’m saying?” he added savagely. And they did, apparently, rewarding his yelling, sneering and eventual tip into bitterness by continuing to withhold their approval.

The challenge for Albarn, Truss and all the others who have tried to charm this particular away crowd is to project a jaunty, offhand confidence that somehow disguises the scale of the need and the fear of rejection. It can make for an odd spectacle, bad jokes and terrible sycophancy. “The world felt safer when Donald Trump was in office,” said Truss this week, and you wondered at her shamelessness – not because sucking up to Trump is unusual in America, but because, coming from a British person, even a former Conservative prime minister, you assume that she is able to see Trump marginally more clearly than her American counterparts, and that at some level she knows that we know this.

There is, however, one thing that may work to Truss’s favour in the US. British critics of Tony Blair used to hammer him for a smoothness that struck some as pseudo-American, and which contributed to his currency – or at least legibility – in the US. Margaret Thatcher’s strident persona had about it a force that, particularly since she was played by Meryl Streep in the movie, has been claimed by some in the US as “American” in flavour.

But Truss has something that can land equally well coming from British people trying to break the US: an effortless, almost Mr Bean-like social awkwardness that invites in Americans a rival condescension, and is frequently utilised by British people abroad. Truss’s odd syntax, lame jokes and occasionally unnerving eye contact may stand a better chance of landing in the US as charming eccentricity, or an extension of the standard-issue bumbling Brit.

Although, of course, in this case, it’s all moot, because no one knows who she is. The New York Times didn’t cover Truss’s book launch in Washington, nor did the Washington Post, and the book currently sits outside the top 4,000 on US Amazon. Her warning, whatever it was, will go not only unheeded but unheard – with no one more profoundly, one assumes, than Donald Trump.

Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell in "Anyone But You."

Anyone But You finally made its Netflix streaming debut, which is exciting news for rom-com fans everywhere. As you watch the movie, you might be wondering where Anyone But You was filmed and if you can visit the breathtaking beaches, cliffs, and other locations in real life.

Loosely adapted from Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing,” Anyone But You stars Glen Powell as Ben, a finance bro who has an incredible first date with Bea (Sydney Sweeney), a law student uncertain about her career. After spending the night, Bea panics and leaves without telling him. When she realizes she made a mistake and returns to his apartment, she overhears Ben saying that she is a “nothing” to him.

Years later, they unexpectedly reunite at a destination wedding in Australia for Bea’s sister, who is marrying Ben’s friend. When their exes show up, they pretend to be a couple—and the rest is history. The film was directed and co-written by Will Gluck, the filmmaker behind rom-coms like Easy A and Friends with Benefits . It was released in December and had an impressive run at the box office, surpassing $88 million domestically and $219 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo .

After its release, the movie went viral on TikTok as audience goers reacted to the film’s credit sequence, which features the cast dancing and singing to Natasha Bedingfield’s nostalgic 2004 hit “Unwritten,” a song highlighted throughout the film. There were also rumors of an off-screen romance between Powell and Sweeney that helped promote the film, as well as the actors’ flirty publicity tour and Sydney Sweeney’s SNL monologue .

Now, Anyone But You is back in the limelight after the film was released on Netflix on April 23, quickly becoming the No. 1 movie on the platform in the U.S. after just one day.

Anyone But You was filmed in parts of Australia around New South Wales and Sydney. Director Will Gluck told The Hollywood Reporter that he wanted the film set in Sydney because he had “really fallen in love with the city” and liked it so much he moved his family there.

“Almost every time you shoot a movie in Sydney, you have to pretend it’s somewhere else and frame out the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. For Anyone But You , I thought, “Why do that?” We actually wrote this movie 100 percent for Sydney — very specific to the destination,” Gluck wrote.

The director continued, “We flew helicopters all over — seeing the city from that vantage point is stunning — and landed one at the Opera House, shut down the Harbour Bridge, filmed at the Queen Victoria Building, and shot for two weeks overlooking Bondi Beach,” he said. “We spent a week on a boat in Sydney Harbour shooting a scene where they’re stranded on a buoy, but you can’t have humans in the water without a shark cage, so we had to have one the whole time. You pinch yourself. It’s so unbelievable we were actually doing these things.”

Here are a few specific Anyone But You filming locations you can visit in person.

Sydney Opera House

The Sydney Opera House is a focal point in Anyone But You. The 20th-century architectural landmark serves as a gorgeous backdrop for big moments, including the end scene when Ben passionately kisses Bea, who is standing at the top of the steps. You can visit the performing arts center for special events and tours.

Marks Park, Bondi

Located in Sydney's northern suburbs, the wedding scene in Anyone But You was filmed at Marks Park overlooking Bondi Beach and the Pacific Ocean. The cliff-top park is open to the public and has fitness stations, a playground, and some shaded areas.

Many of Anyone But You ’s breathtaking beach scenes were filmed around Palm Beach. Director Will Gluck told THR that one of the best parts of filming was on location in Palm Beach, a suburb in the Northern Beaches.

“Our caravans were parked right on the water, and Glen and Sydney and I decided to live there the whole time. We’d shoot all day and all the crew would go home, then we’d jump in the water and have a swim, go to our trailers and have dinner sitting outside,” he said. “It’s one of the most beautiful places in the world, and you normally wouldn’t be allowed to sleep there. It was probably the most fun I’ve ever had filming.”

Jones Bay Wharf

Jones Bay Wharf in Sydney Harbour's Pyrmont.

The historic Jones Bay Wharf is another familiar filming location in Anyone But You. The hidden gem in the Pyrmont district is home to fine dining restaurants, charming cafes, and beautiful views the of the city and Harbour Bridge.

Queen Victoria Building

Queen Victoria Building in Sydney, Australia.

While on their way to collect flowers for the wedding, Ben and his friend Pete are seen walking alongside the Queen Victoria Building. The Romanesque 19th-century building is actually a five-level shopping center with fashion boutiques, jewelry stores, cafes, and restaurants.

Anyone But You is now streaming on Netflix.

Are New York Jets Open to Trading No. 10 Overall Draft Pick?

The New York Jets have rumored interest in Georgia tight end Brock Bowers and Washington receiver Rome Odunze. Will either last until the No. 10 pick or will the Jets have to trade up to get their guy?

  • Author: Ralph Ventre

In this story:

New York Jets' general manager Joe Douglas faces a lot of questions ahead of this week's NFL Draft.

Set to pick at No. 10 overall, Douglas has to determine whether to stand pat or jump up the draft board to ensure the Jets get their desired player.

Are the Jets mesmerized by the idea of Georgia tight end Brock Bowers working with quarterback Aaron Rodgers and will the No. 1 positional prospect last until the tenth pick? Maybe, Jets' brass prefers to trade up to guarantee adding a top-flight receiver like LSU's Malik Nabers or Washington's Rome Odunze?

"Who are those players that we would consider coming up from 10 to go get? How many of them are there? How far are you willing to go?" said Douglas during last week's pre-draft press conference on Florham Park.

Would Douglas be willing to spend draft capital by moving up for an offensive tackle ? Does he find it necessary to leapfrog the Tennessee Titans at No. 7 for Notre Dame bookend Joe Alt?

The last time the Jets made the No. 10 overall selection they drafted Ohio State receiver Garrett Wilson in 2022.

"I think we're in a good spot, excited about next week, and we definitely have 10 players that we're excited to take, so we're ready to roll," said Douglas.

There's also the idea of trading back in Round 1 to acquire more picks, but that's not typical behavior for a team that's "all in" on the 2024 season with its 40-year-old field general.

"On the flip side, we get to 10 and we have a strong group of players that we love, how willing are you to move back? How far do you feel comfortable moving back?" said Douglas.

The answers will finally come on April 25 in Detroit. Television coverage kicks off at 8:00 pm ET Thursday night on ESPN and NFL Network.
