Transit Options from Rome Airport to Cruise Port

Port of Civitavecchia, or -as it is commonly known- Rome Cruise Port, is a major hub for cruise travelers. Despite its name, Rome Cruise Port isn’t located in Rome. In fact, it is 70km/43.50 miles away from the Italian capital. Nevertheless, if you are landing at Leonardo da Vinci Airport, you’ll find plenty of options for your ride from Rome Airport to Civitavecchia Port. Thus, Rome airport taxis  and  private airport transfers  offer their services at FCO Airport, while  Rome airport car rentals  are ideal for travelers wishing to explore Civitavecchia’s surrounding areas or arrive at the Cruise Port at their own pace. Last but not least, the indirect yet affordable  train rides  are another way to reach Rome Cruise Port.

The vast majority of cruise companies offer shuttle rides from and to Leonardo da Vinci Airport. However, you should keep in mind that their services are usually quite pricey.

Rome Airport to Cruise Port by Taxi

Rome airport taxis are one of the most comfortable ways to travel from FCO to Civitavecchia Port. Available around the clock, the white airport taxis are waiting at the taxi ranks, located outside the Arrivals level of T1 and T3. Are you worried about taxi scamming incidents? Despite rumors, licensed Rome taxi drivers are reliable. Still, if you are offered ride services by individual drivers at the airport, you should refuse them. Otherwise, you risk getting scammed or overcharged. Licensed taxis have the “Comune di Roma” sign on their doors and their license number on the side and back parts of the vehicle as well as displayed on their interiors. Still, the best way to ensure the legitimacy of your Rome taxi is to take it from the official taxi ranks.

The taxi fare from Rome Airport to Cruise Port is set at 125€/136$. This price includes all additional charges (luggage, night journeys, etc.) On the other hand, you don’t have to tip the driver. When satisfied, locals just round up the final fare. In any case, both cash and bank card payments are accepted. Nevertheless, it is advisable to check with the driver before beginning your ride, as drivers often claim that their POS machines don’t operate to get paid in cash. Overall, the journey to Rome Cruise Port will last around 50 minutes. During peak hours, traveling time can be up to 65 minutes though. In any case, Rome airport taxi drivers can’t refuse rides but are obligated to drive you to your destination as soon as you enter the vehicle.

Our Tip:  Ride-sharing services are also provided at FCO Airport.

We selected one of the best, most trustworthy and convenient 5-star airport taxi companies for your transfer from Rome Fiumicino Airport based on user reviews across various platforms such as Google, Tripadvisor and Trustpilot. Rome Airport to Cruise Port by Train

Rome airport train rides are the most affordable transit option from FCO to Civitavecchia Port. However, they aren’t convenient, as they require a change of line. Still, they remain a value-for-money alternative for many travelers on a budget. Explicitly, the train options from Rome Airport to Cruise Port are:

Leonardo Express

The fast train runs from the airport train station, lying in front of T3 close to both terminals, to Roma Termini in the city center. It is equipped with luggage racks, charging outlets, and first-class seating, and operates every 15 minutes from 06:08 am to 11:23 pm. Leonardo Express needs only 32 minutes to get to Termini Station and costs 14€/15.40$. Children up to 4 years of age are out of charge, while each paying adult can travel with one kid aged 4-12 for free. Tickets are available online. In that case, they are already validated and must be used within 90 minutes of the set time. Alternatively, you can buy them from some retail stores, the airport ticket offices (from 06:45 am to 10:12 pm), or the automatic vendors. However, you’ll have to validate them before catching your train.

Once reaching Roma Termini, you’ll hop on the FrecciaBianca route to Civitavecchia.  Thus, the overall rail ride from Rome Airport to Civitavecchia Port will last around 96 minutes and cost about 30€/33$. Please note that the rail station in Civitavecchia is located almost 1.50km/1 mile from the Cruise Terminal. From that point, you’ll find free cruise shuttles to your exact terminal. Local buses also link Civitavecchia Station to Cruise Terminal, costing around 2€/2.20$.

No matter the chosen train line, you should opt for an early reservation. As a matter of fact, early bookings usually come with lower fares.

Regional FL1 Trains

Instead of the fast Leonardo Express, you can take the somewhat slower yet also cheaper FL1 Train, running every 15 minutes from the airport train station from 05:57 am to 11:27 pm. On Sundays, it operates until 00:27 am while running on a 30-minute frequency. The regional train doesn’t have designated luggage space but costs only 8€/8.80$. Tickets are available online or through the ticket counters (open from 06:45 am to 10:12 pm) and the automatic vendors. Although all tickets have to get validated before hopping on the train, online tickets are already validated. Still, they have to be printed and shown at the turnstiles. Children younger than 4 don’t pay for their tickets, while one kid aged 4-12 per each paying adult travels for free as well.

The FL1 Train will get you to either Trastevere Station in about 27 minutes or Ostiense Station in 34 minutes. At Trastevere Station, you can take one of the regional trains heading to Civitavecchia every 20-40 minutes from 06:57 am to 10:57 pm. The total traveling time will be around 110 minutes, and the price for your transit from FCO to Civitavecchia Port will be 11€/12$. Alternatively, you can head to Ostiense Station and take the intercity trains to Civitavecchia. However, even though the duration of your journey will be about 90 minutes, intercity trains run 4-5 times a day and are more expensive. Therefore, you’ll have to pay 19.50€/21$ for your ride. In any case, after reaching Civitavecchia Train Station, you’ll have to use the local buses or walk to the Cruise Terminal, located almost 1.50 km/1 mile away.

Rome Airport to Cruise Port by Bus

Another option for your ride from Rome Airport to Civitavecchia Port is to take one of the Rome airport bus lines departing from the airport bus stop close to Exit 6 of T3 and reach Roma Termini. From there, you can continue your journey to Cruise Port via a train line. Nevertheless, your trip to Civitavecchia Port will be time-consuming, tiring, dependent on traffic levels, and slightly more expensive than traveling with the regional train lines.

Car Rental from Rome Airport to Cruise Port

A Rome airport car rental is the number one choice for FCO passengers relishing independent rides. Verily, with a rental car, you can plan your drive and your entire journey’s itinerary as you wish. You can explore Civitavecchia’s nearby regions, visit other destinations, or simply reach the Cruise Port stress-free and drop off your vehicle there. If you are indeed planning on renting a car from Fiumicino Airport, you should make your reservation as early as possible. In that way, you’ll benefit from tempting deals and find a wide variety of available vehicle models.

You can expect a 50-minute traveling time from FCO to Civitavecchia Port. However, if roads are congested, the duration of your journey can be up to 65 minutes. Once you reach your destination (and if you aren’t to just drop off the vehicle at an agreed location), you’ll have to park your Rome car rental . Fortunately, you’ll find parking facilities both inside the port and in the nearby area. Still, free parking is almost non-existent.

Rome Airport Transfers from FCO Airport to Civitavecchia Port

If you want to get to your departing cruise ship in style and comfort, on time, and without any hassle, you should opt for a private airport transfer. In that way, your assigned driver will be waiting at the Arrivals hall, on tap to take your luggage, show you the way to the vehicle of your preference outside the exit doors, and will drive you to your destination while giving you useful advice about your onward trip. Should you have any required extra amenities, all you have to do is ask them while filling out the booking form. Overall, a Rome airport transfer will level up your traveling experience from Rome Airport to Civitavecchia Port, while can end up being rather affordable if you search and compare your options in advance.

Your cruise ends in Rome and you want to go directly to the airport? This private transfer from Civitavecchia to the Airport is an ideal option for cruisers who are finishing their trip and have a flight leaving Rome.

Rome Cruise Port is approximately 70 km from the Airport. In just 50 minutes you will be at the airport, disembarking directly at the terminal of your departure flight or at your airport hotel. But of course, on the day cruisers disembark, there will be a lot of confusion and it could take twice as long to get off the ship and leave.

So here’s a tip: avoid booking your return flight too close to the cruise’s disembarkation time. Even more so if your return flight is intercontinental. Sometimes it’s better to fly a day later and take it easy rather than worrying about getting to the airport on time.

Traffic between Rome, the Airport and Porto Civitavecchia can be hectic and being accompanied by a professional ready to meet your needs is very important. Transportation Between Rome and the Cruise Ship Port

Civitavechia to rome transportation options.

Updated 2023 If your cruise ship or ferry has Rome (Roma) on the itinerary, it docks at the port of Civitavecchia , Rome’s modern port about 50 miles away. From Civitavecchia you’ll probably need to get to the airport or into Rome (or the reverse if you need to get to your cruise ship). Here are transportation options:

How to Take the Train or Shuttle Bus from Civitavecchia to Rome

Civitavecchia’s train station is near the entrance of the port, but quite a distance from where passengers usually disembark. From the Civitavecchia train station there are usually several regular trains per hour going to Rome’s Termini station, the central train station, taking a little over an hour (you can buy these directly at the station). Faster, and more expensive, frecce trains make it to Termini Station in about 45 minutes. Some trains also go to Tiburtina or Ostiense stations in Rome.

To get to the Civitavecchia train station, use the Port Shuttle Bus . See port shuttle bus for information about various shuttles for getting out of the port area to where you want to go.

If you’re spending the night in Rome you’ll probably need to take a taxi to your hotel from the station as buses and the metro can be very crowded and difficult to manage with luggage. Read more about taxis in Rome .

Another option is a Shuttle Bus from Civitavecchia to Rome . It travels between the Welcome Center at the port to Termini Station in Rome, taking about an hour.

You could also take a shorter train ride to the town of Tarquinia to see the painted Etruscan tombs and archaeological museum and stroll through the charming medieval town center.

How to Take the Train to Rome’s Fiumicino Airport

Fiumicino, Rome’s international airport, is about 40 miles from the port. Inexpensive regional trains from Civitavecchia station go to Roma Trastevere station, where you can change to a regional train for Fiumicino. This is the least expensive option (but keep in mind that you have to get out of the port area to the train station first).

If you take a fast, frecce, train from Civitavecchia to Termini, Rome’s central train station, you can take the Leonardo Express train to the airport.

To find train times and prices, go to Trenitalia and enter Civitavecchia and Fiumicino . Passengers of cruise ships trying to avoid the cost of a cruise shuttle or private shuttle to the airport often wish they had gone with a shuttle. While the train is less expensive, the changes make it inconvenient for passengers with much luggage.

Private Transfer Services from Civitavecchia Port

Private or shared transfer or shuttle services are available to take you from the cruise ship port to the airport or into Rome, going directly to your hotel rather than having to take a taxi from the train station. Arranged shuttle services usually meet passengers near where the mobility bus drops them, avoiding the hassle of trying to get to the train station from there.

  • Book a private transfer to or from Rome or the airport with Miles&Miles.

Things to Do with a Day in Port

If you’d prefer a smaller, more personalized tour than the cruise ship offers, book a Rome Shore Excursion full-day tour with Miles&Miles, one of our favorite tour companies, that includes pick-up and drop-off at your ship and an English-speaking private guide. Or if you want to get into Rome on your own, make the most of your day with this Rome In A Day Tour with Vatican, Colosseum & Historic Center that includes top sights and a guided tour of both the Colosseum and Vatican Museums.

If you don’t want to worry about making it back to your ship on time but want to explore a little on your own, you can spend the morning wandering through the old town, visiting the National Archaeological Museum, and exploring the market, then have a relaxing seafood lunch in a restaurant.

You could also spend the day at a nearby beach or visit the ruins of the Roman baths, Le Terme Taurine , and soak in the Ficoncella hot springs. There’s even a pebble beach in Civitavecchia, near the train station, and a seaside promenade with bars and restaurants.

  • See and compare Civitavecchia hotels if you want to spend the night before or after your cruise.

Be Careful: If you decide to go out on your own, into Rome or to other nearby towns or even just in Civitavecchia, allow extra time to get back to the ship! Taking a taxi or private shuttle (see above) back to the port is probably the best option to avoid being late.

Civitavecchia cruise port to/from City of Rome by train

Using the train for travelling between rome & its cruise port.

Rome train to Civitavecchia, Rome's Cruise Port

There is a very good train service between Rome and Rome's Cruise Port, Civitavecchia. The core service is broadly a twice hourly service on commuter style trains taking around 70 to 80 minutes to travel the full route. Punctuality and time keeping are not strong points of this service.

The terminus in the centre of Rome is Termini Station, but there are interim stops attractive to those travelling to and from Fiumicino Airport or have a hotel around the Vatican area.

There are also much less frequent long intercity long distance trains that will do the journey in around 45 minutes non-stop. Tickets for these cost well over double that of the commuter trains.

In 2019 a new service was launched called the Civitavecchia Express , designed for cruise traveller transfers into Rome. This service is quicker and has guaranteed seating, but does not go to Termini Station. Its two station stops are the San Pietro and Ostiense stations. You can either use the bus, taxi or metro to get to Termini station or to explore the rest of Rome.

Rome stations for travelling from Civitavecchia

Trains between Rome City Centre and its airports + cruise ports

The terminus in Rome City Centre, Termini Station, is the main public transport hub for Rome in the city centre.

The trains travel at quite a speed from the outskirts of Rome to Civitavecchia but are frustratingly slow within Rome taking a circuitous route around and into the city centre. Of a typical 80 minute journey, 30 minutes will be spent within the Rome urban area.

For many people it can make sense to get off at other stations than the Rome terminus at Termini, especially if you are on a day trip or going to Fiumicino, Rome's main airport.

Travelling from Civitavecchia a typical train will stop at S. Pietro (40 min), Trastevere (50 min), Ostiense (55 min) and finally Termini (70 min). S. Pietro is around 15 minutes' walk to the Vatican and St Peter's Square.

Trastevere is the interchange for a frequent airport train to Fiumicino Airport.

Ostiense is an interchange with the Rome Metro which can take you direct to the Colosseum or Spanish Steps.

Top of the page

Civitavecchia train tickets & luggage.

Both Civitavecchia and Rome Stations have manned ticket offices that take credit cards and there are also ticket machines. Ticket machines are easy to use, take all major credit cards and support several languages including English.

Beware, the queues at Termini Station especially can be very long for the manned ticket offices.

Most frequencies between Civitavecchia and Rome are by local stopping train. There are infrequent intercity trains that run non-stop between Civitavecchia and Termini Station, in the Civitavecchia to Rome direction punctuality especially is not good.

This is not Switzerland, do give yourself plenty of contingency - the trains are reliable but are subject to delays.

Important - if you buy a ticket for the local trains, it is flexible and you have to stamp it before you board the train using the machines around all the stations. You risk a heavy fine if you produce an unstamped ticket for a ticket inspector. Further details of this are on our main Rome public transport page .

You can also purchase tickets in advance on the Tren Italia website. (use the banner link below.)

Trains between Rome City Centre, its airports + cruise ports

Civitavecchia train interior

The local trains themselves are more often than not run with double deck carriages. The picture is of a typical interior, seats are not allocated.

There is a small space between the seats where you can put a medium size case and overhead luggage rail. It's not as bad as it might look, luggage will be a problem if you have two or more large cases per person, plus hand luggage.

Trains are not normally crowded at all except at the height of the commuter period into Rome, in the morning and out in the evening.

At Rome's Termini Station there is a left luggage office so it is possible to have a brief visit to see the sights of Rome before catching a late flight or train.

Civitavecchia Express - non stop train from Civitavecchia cruise port to central Rome

Civitavecchia Express train Rome

In 2019 a new service was launched called the Civitavecchia Express. This service is designed for cruise passengers, as it connects Civitavecchia with Roma San Pietro and Roma Ostiense stations. Civitavecchia station is about a mile from the cruise port but there are plenty of taxis and a local bus available to take you there.

The Civitavecchia Express service runs four daily journeys from 1 April  to 1 November 2020. Two in the morning, bound for Rome and two in the afternoon bound for Civitavecchia. The timetable was worked out to meet the needs of many cruise travellers who wish to visit Rome in a day. The train times are quicker and more reliable than the commuter trains, there is also guaranteed seating, allowing an easier, more comfortable and faster transfer into Rome.

Fast journey times mean you can get to Roma San Pietro in 35/40 minutes and Roma Ostiense in 55 minutes.

For day trips this train should work well, but if you are staying in a hotel overnight or longer then you need to also consider that the stations visited by the Civitavecchia Express are not in the centre of Rome, so will require a taxi, metro or bus to take you the rest of the way.

You can walk from Roma San Pietro station to the Vatican in about 15 minutes or take a taxi, but if you have plenty of luggage you may not find this so appealing. Again you can use the Roma Ostiense station and transfer to the Metro to then reach Rome Termini, but you'll have to carry luggage across platforms. If Rome Termini is your final destination and your staying longer than one day, you may consider using the slower commuter trains that go directly to the Termini station from Civitavecchia. You can though use the two stations visited by the Civitavecchia Express as a jumping point into the rest of Rome, either through walking, taxi, bus or metro.

The Civitavecchia Express does offer a good solution for travellers from cruise ships who want to visit Rome in a day and for those travellers who travel light and appreciate a more reliable service with guaranteed seats. You can find out train times and ticket details at Civitavecchia Portmobility .

Civitavecchia Station to/from cruise ship

Civitavecchia public bus between station & Largo della Pace

There is no direct public access to cruise ships in the port. You have to use free shuttle buses between individual ships docked and a cruise ship reception area called Largo della Pace just outside one of the dock gates, from here there is a local bus to the railway station or you can walk or take a taxi.

By public bus

Local public buses leave from outside the main exit of the train station running roughly every 20 minutes, these take less than 10 minutes to Largo della Pace. The bus ticket can be bought at the news-stand or at the bar inside the station.

Local taxi cabs are also available immediately in front of the main exit to Civitavecchia Train Station as an alternative to the public bus to Largo della Pace.

It is possible to walk between the train station and Largo della Pace in about 15 minutes, though with luggage it may take longer.

The route is pretty straightforward with pretty smooth rights of way which you can roll your luggage along.

From the front entrance of the railway station turn right down the small access road to the wide coastal road and cross this road immediately to the promenade and turn right towards the centre of town.

The promenade footpath is very wide, parallel to the sea and very smooth without kerbs to negotiate. After about 5 minutes you come to the dock gates with a McDonald's on your right and the imposing Fort Michelangelo on your left.

Walk through the gates and immediately cross to the right hand side of the road. Now just follow the dock side, ignoring the spur that goes out to the left immediately after entering through the dock gates.

Now just follow the pedestrian path as it winds through the docks past fishing boats, and a terminal with toilets and shops. Most of the way the path is just a cordoned off strip of tarmac separate to the road and again the surface is very smooth. Eventually you come to a road junction by another set of dock gates and you just follow the pedestrian signs out of the docks labelled “Shuttle Bus To Cruise” to the Largo della Pace facility on the opposite side of the road to the port exit.

Day trip to Rome? Maybe get off train at St Peter's (S. Pietro)

S. Pietro Station - visit St Peter's as part of your cruise ship stopover

If you are visiting Rome on a stopover on a cruise ship, the train is an excellent way of avoiding the high prices of the cruise line offerings. The Civitavecchia Express has been designed with this very market in mind.

For most doing such a day trip on the public train, it is a good idea to get off the train at S. Pietro (St Peter's). Not only is it marginally cheaper than going to the terminus at Termini Station, but it will save you 30 minutes, maybe more. St Peter's Station is only 10 minutes' walk from St Peter's Square and the Vatican Museums. All the Rome hop-on hop-off sightseeing buses park in front of St Peter's Square.

There are also local buses from in front of St Peter's Station that will take you into the very heart of Rome.

Walking directions S. Pietro Station to St Peter's Square.

By foot, on leaving the front of St Peter's Station there is a small square where the bus terminus is located. With the station building behind you, turn left at the back of the square down the Via Innocenzo, a one-way street with the traffic including the buses coming towards you.

Walk on the right hand side of the road and after about 100 yards/metres take the first right down the Via Nicolo. Walk to the end of Via Nicolo, (only about 75 yards) and turn left into the Via della Stazione di S.Pietro. You will see a petrol/gas station about 50 yards in front of you at a fork in the road. Our route forks right here in front of the petrol station down the Via Alcide de Gasperi keeping to the left hand side of this road.

After about 100 yards the Via Alcide de Gasperi joins the busy Via Delle Fornaci from the right. Keep on the left hand side of the road and you soon come to a wide underpass for pedestrians that takes you under a busy road. On the other side you see the Roman Columns of St Peter's Square immediately in front of you.

distance between Fiumicino airport and Civitavecchia cruise port is 65 km

While distance between the port and Ciampino airport is 85 km.

distance between the cruise port and Ciampino airport is 85 km

Very frequent trains run between Civitavecchia and Rome’s central Termini Station, offering cheapest transfer options for travelers (starting from 4.50 euro for a single ride). Moreover, you can reach most of other Roman train stations directly from Civitavecchia.

From Termini Station you can easily get to both Ciampino and Fiumicino airports. In case with Ciampino, the best option will be to take a bus which goes from Termini to the airport and you can choose among several bus operators that operate daily from 4.35 am until 11.10 pm. The price for a single ride starts from 4 euro. You can read more about how to get to Ciampino airport.

Talking about Fiumicino airport, the most convenient option is to take Leonardo Express train from Termini directly to the airport, which costs 14 euro for a single ride. Another good option is to go from/to the port to/from one of the airports by taking a taxi or by ordering a private transfer on Mercedes.

The trip by car will take 45-60 minutes, while travelling from Civitavecchia by a typical train will take 40 minutes to reach S. Pietro (15 min walk to the Vatican City and St. Peter’s square ), 50 minutes to reach Trastevere (best bars and restaurants and you can easy reach city center by foot or by taking tram 8), 55 minutes to reach Ostiense, and, finally, 70 minutes to reach Termini station.

Rome Airport to Cruise Port

How To Get To Civitavecchia From Rome Airport

Situated on the Southern part of Italy is Civitavecchia Port . Civitavecchia this port serves as a transfer and start/stop point for a large number of cruises and other boats every year. Sometimes referred to as Port of Rome , this port plays a significant role in cruise-based tourism in Rome and the surrounding cities. Referring to the port as the Port of Rome can be deceiving though as the port isn’t actually located in the city of Rome. On a map, you will see that the only major waterway in Rome is the Tiber River, and they don’t send large cruise ships up the river.

Instead, Civitavecchia Port is located in the city of Civitavecchia. This city is located about an hour and 5o minutes (70.5 km) away by car from Fiumicino Rome Airport. As a large number of tourists to Rome come over via cruise ships, a lot of people often want to know more about the Port of Civitavecchia. With that in mind, we have created this mini guide to help you get the information you need.

Not everyone wants to drive to Civitavecchia to board a cruise, or even can. That means flying into the local airport, Leonardo da Vinci Fiumicino Airport. The Fiumicino Airport is located near Rome but not in Rome itself, that means getting from the airport to Civitavecchia will need some planning. We recommend doing this planning before you start your trip.

Here are some options for getting from Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci Fiumicino Airport to Civitavecchia City/Port.

Cruise Ship Transport

Almost all cruise lines offer buses too and from the airport. These are easy to get on as they will take you right to where you need to go and know the answers to all of your questions. You do pay a very high rate for one of these transports. Cruise companies make a lot of their money this way.

Private Transfer/Private Car

An alternative to using the transport that a cruise ship arranges is having a private transfer/private car take you from the airport to Civitavecchia Port. This typically costs less money and is anywhere between 29 euros a person to 90 euros a person.

Taxi Service

The Rome Airport is a decent amount of time away from Civitavecchia Port, just about 50 km to give you an idea. That is a long taxi ride and taking a taxi will cost you over 120 euros. We recommend that you take one of the other transportation methods because a taxi usually ends up costing far more than its worth unless other methods are too busy.

book your taxi trasfer here

By far train is one of the most economical ways to get to Civitavecchia Port from the Rome Airport . In total you will spend no more than 40 euros. However, you make up for the cost in the amount of time riding and transferring trains takes. A shuttle train will take you from Rome Airport to Rome where you will catch the main train.

This train will take you to the Civitavecchia Train Station and you can walk from the station to the port. You will spend upwards of 2 hours on trains. Make sure to factor in time for walking from the train station to the port.

I would appreciate any input on this, Thanks!

Have you checked with the cruise line or travel agent to see what time window they use for flights they include in cruise packages? Do they ever book anything this early in the afternoon?

I would call it tight--maybe doable--but not guaranteed. I would prefer a flight time with a little more wiggle room.

That 1pm departure is fine. Even gives you wiggle room. The airport is only 45-60 minutes from Civi.

Thanks very much for the replies, much appreciated! @yescanada - if you could share the links to the two reports you mentioned, that will be helpful for me to learn perhaps some details about how these passengers did it. Thanks again.

I'd schedule that especially if there are advantages to doing so.

Enjoy your trip!

A glimpse inside Dubai’s futuristic new airport, set to be the biggest on Earth

Al Maktoum International Airport will have a capacity of 260 million annual passengers according to ambitious new plans

An artist's rendering of Al Maktoum International Airport

Within ten years Dubai’s main airport will move to a new desert mega-hub, projected to be the busiest on the planet.

Located 28 miles south-west of Dubai, Al Maktoum International Airport will have the largest capacity of any on Earth, with the potential to carry up to 260 million passengers per year.

It will replace the existing Dubai International Airport, already the busiest in the world for international traffic, handling 87 million passengers in 2023. Only Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson airport is busier, with 105 million mostly domestic passengers in 2023.

New renderings of Al Maktoum International Airport show a vast passenger terminal, with floating parks, palm trees and a curving white roof. From above, the airport is designed to resemble traditional Bedouin tents, surrounded by desert fields to one side and artificial forested lakes to the other.

Al Maktoum International Airport is already in service, and is sometimes called Dubai World Central Airport. It opened in June 2010, primarily for cargo flights, but has welcomed passenger aircraft since 2011.

By 2016, it served 410,000 passengers per year, although some critics described the airport as a “white elephant” due to the delays in plans for its dramatic expansion, exacerbated by the lingering impact of the 2009 economic crisis and then the Covid pandemic.

The expansion of Al Maktoum will cost AED 128 billion (£28 billion) and all existing operations from Dubai International Airport, including Emirates and FlyDubai flights, will transfer to Al Maktoum by 2034.

The announcement comes just weeks after Dubai suffered the worst rainfall in its history . Sections of the airport were flooded and the transport hub temporarily closed to passengers, with services impacted for days after the rain stopped.

The new Al Maktoum International Airport will have 400 gates, five terminals and five parallel runways (the existing Dubai International Airport has two runways and three terminals). The newly expanded airport will cover 70 square kilometres, five times the area of the existing international hub.

In a social media post, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai, said:  “New aviation technologies will be employed for the first time in the aviation sector.”

The development of Al Maktoum International Airport will be part of a wider project to construct a new city in the suburbs of Dubai. Sheikh Mohammed added: “As we build an entire city around the airport in Dubai South, demand for housing for a million people will follow. It will host the world’s leading companies in the logistics and air transport sectors.”

 Al Maktoum International Airport

Dubai International Airport is currently connected to 262 destinations across 104 countries, with 102 international airlines serving it. However, given that it is located close to the city centre and is surrounded by residential areas and two major motorways, the airport is restricted in how far it can expand.

Al Maktoum International Airport is based in an undeveloped desert area miles from the urban centre, meaning it is able to fulfil rising demand for international air traffic through the Emirate state in future decades.

Along with the airport, city planners have suggested that a golf resort, exhibition centres, hotels, logistics hubs and residential areas could follow in the surrounding area.

“We are building a new project for future generations, ensuring continuous and stable development for our children and their children in turn,” added Sheikh Mohammed. “Dubai will be the world’s airport, its port, its urban hub and its new global centre.”
