The 7 best free Safari extensions for the Mac

Jackie Dove

Browser extensions add specific capabilities to Safari by reading and modifying web content to promote an integrated browsing experience that’s tailored to your needs. There are two places to find Apple-approved Safari extensions: The App Store and the Safari Extensions Gallery webpage .

With Safari 12 on macOS Mojave and iOS 12, Apple revised the way its native web browser operates with extensions. Whereas in the past, you could easily download an extension from a developer, today you must download and install a Mac app or an Apple approved extension from the Safari Extensions Gallery page. The gallery is still operative for browser versions as far back as version 9, and is still considered a safe way to download and install Safari extensions. Regardless of the browser version, all apps from the App Store and Gallery page can update automatically.

Safari 12 blocks legacy extensions from third-party sources, and is now in the process of deprecating its own Extensions Gallery. It quit accepting new Gallery extension submissions at the end of 2018, accelerating a transition away from the Gallery in favor of the App Store. Many extensions continue to work just fine in Mohave’s latest browser.

Right now, there’s not much to the browser extension section of the App Store, which you can access via the Safari > Safari Extensions menu. Of the 66 App extensions currently available, only 27 are free. Another half dozen are 99 cents and the rest range in price to $19.99. Here are the best of the free extensions from both sources.

Ghostery Lite

Ghostery Lite is the free version of Ghostery that blocks ads and trackers that transmit and receive user information. Using the browser’s own Content Blocker API, the extension discards content, cookies, and tracking scripts to cut down on the information Safari shares with other websites, without sacrificing performance.

You can customize Ghostery from the toolbar button by choosing either the default setting or individually blocking some ads while leaving others for sites you want to support. You can also use the extension to control analytics, audio or video players, adult content and more.

translate safari extension mac

When you come across multi-lingual web content, it’s distracting not to be able to read it in context. Translate lets you translate pages from any language to any other language via either the Microsoft or Google Translate function. You can also choose from a host of other translation services via the toolbar button, contextual menu, or keyboard shortcut. nWithin the settings you can also choose whether to translate pages automatically or manually and choose to set up a preferred service region.

An updated Mac App Store version called TranslateMe costs $9.99.

zoom sfari extension

Sometimes webpage content is just too small (or large). You can fix such issues with Zoom , a simple extension that lets you adjust the scale of content on any webpage.

Just invoke the app from the toolbar, and you get a slider that spans from 0 to 400 percent, making any size text or images easier to see in a full page context. You can adjust sizes with the slider or the plus or minus buttons. A Default button immediately reverts the page to 100 percent.

TrafficLight

trafficlight mac safari

The web often seems like a giant mirror looking inward at every user, spying and recording most activities for both commercial and nefarious purposes. Bitdefender, the company behind the popular anti-virus program of the same name, offers the TrafficLight Safari extension as an advanced malware protection filter that guards your browsing experience against phishing attacks. It finds hidden trackers that follow and analyze your browsing activity, while a safe search feature specifically monitors search results to warn users about malware and fraudulent websites.

hoversee mac safari

HoverSee Safari extension

Content scaling can be an issue on some websites, with some images especially difficult to decipher. HoverSee enlarges all images and image-based video links as you hover your mouse over them and shows any available descriptions alongside the preview.

It works especially well on thumbnail images like Facebook and Twitter, links to image galleries, and direct image links. If you hover on YouTube, it will automatically play your video in its magnified mode. You can adjust visual display delay, minimum and maximum zoom, white list or black list certain sites, use a hot key to control zoom on specific images, autoplay or mute videos and more.

duckduckgo safari mac

DuckDuckGo Safari extension

Even if you’re not already using DuckDuckGo as your default search engine, you can still take advantage of the search engine’s privacy and security features with this Safari extension. The extension brings up a search interface that lets you search without storing your search history or following you around the web. Just click the icon in the toolbar to get the search box, or invoke it from the right-click contextual menu.

shortly mac safari

When you want to include a URL in an email or social media post, it helps to chop long ones into short bits-and that’s where Shortly come in. You can choose your preferred service of Google, Bitly, TinyURL or Custom Endpoint. Just enable the extension in the Safari Preferences, and then click the browser toolbar button or set up a hot key to automatically shorten any URL. Your trim URL appears ready to copy and paste either as a popover or alert window.

9 Best Safari Extensions of 2024

Add more functionality to Safari

safari extensions macos

  • Swansea University, Staffordshire University

safari extensions macos

Like Chrome , Safari isn't just a stagnant web browser, it also has additional functionality via its Safari Extension plugins which take seconds to install . A form of add-on, Safari extensions now come bundled with relevant Mac apps, as well as via the App Store.

Whether you're looking for productivity hacks, easy ways of saving money on your shopping, or ways to make your browsing experience more pleasant, there's a Safari extension for you.

Looking for great Chrome extensions? There are plenty out there.

Grammar Checker: Grammarly

Simple and clear writing suggestions.

You need a subscription to get the most from it.

Grammarly is there for those times when you're not quite sure if your spelling or grammar is up to scratch. It highlights issues via a red line underneath a word and allows you to easily correct them, whether you happen to be typing a Facebook status or a blog post. It's a useful service that's like a little nudge in the right direction when trying to improve your writing ability.

Cinema Style Lighting Effect: Turn Off the Lights

Neat atmospheric lighting effect.

Need to load the separate app to change settings.

One of the most effective things at the cinema is how the lights go down and you can focus solely on the cinema screen. Turn Off the Lights offers that same kind of effect on your laptop or desktop.

When on YouTube or another video based site, click the lightbulb icon on Safari, and the lights around the video playing are immediately dimmed. You can focus on the screen itself rather than everything going on around it. To get the full effect, you need to tweak some settings, but it's a neat way of adding some atmosphere when watching a video.

Price Comparer: PriceBlink

Easy to compare prices.

Only works in the U.S. and U.K.

PriceBlink keeps an eye on prices so you don't have to. Go to somewhere like Amazon or eBay, and the moment you load an item, PriceBlink pops up with its price elsewhere. You can instantly see if Amazon really is offering the best price or if there's somewhere cheaper you could switch to. If a better alternative is listed, click the site, and PriceBlink loads the alternate option in a separate tab. This simple extension could save you a lot of money over time.

Password Management: LastPass

Extra layer of protection for passwords.

Little convoluted to setup.

Safari has built-in password management, but LastPass is much better at the job. It works across multiple devices and also gives you somewhere to store files and notes securely.

A lot of the time, you'll need to delve into the separate app to use it fully, but the Safari extension gives you the ability to generate secure passwords, quickly fill in forms, or add notes, all directly from your browser. It's a real game changer for security and privacy concerns.

Easy Coupon Codes: Honey

Easy to browse.

Most coupons are for the U.S. only.

Online, you can find thousands of coupon codes and offers, but it's likely that you forget to look them up until you've already ordered something. At the touch of a button, you can open Honey to the side of Safari, and check out the coupons available to you.

The extension offers up plenty of popular retailers such as Macy's, Bloomingdale's, eBay, and Sears. Just tap on the name of the retailer, and you can look up coupons, as well as details on how long ago they worked correctly. Honey also has a reward scheme for extra bonuses.

Link Saving: Pocket

Great for storing links for later reference.

You need to sign up first.

How often do you find yourself looking at a great long-form article and realizing you don't have the time to read it right now? With Pocket, you just need to click the "Save to Pocket" button, and the link saves to your account so you can easily consult it later on. It works across multiple devices and you can tag and label articles so that everything is neatly organized.

Ad blocker: Adblock Plus

Easy to set up.

Settings can be a little tricky.

No one likes obtrusive ads when trying to read an interesting article online. Adblock Plus makes it simple to block ads and tracking ads that bug you, while "safelisting" websites that you want to see all the ads for. Adblock Plus takes a responsible approach to ads with an option allowing for "acceptable ads," appreciating that website owners still need to generate revenue, while saving you the hassle of the worst kind of adverts.

Picture in Picture: PiPer

Supports many different video sites.

Liable to dent your productivity.

Being able to multitask is always a valuable skill. While you can switch between windows and tabs, it hasn't been possible to have YouTube or Netflix running alongside what you're working on in Safari.

PiPer changes all that. Via its extension, you can easily place a video in the corner of your screen, allowing you to continue working while the video plays to the side. It's a great tool for juggling multiple things together.

Translation: Translate

Translates from dozens of languages.

You need to poke around in settings to gain full benefits.

One of the best things about Chrome is its ability to translate websites for you. Translate brings that functionality to Safari. Simply go to a website, tap the translate button, and Translate converts everything to English via Google Translate or Bing Translate. It takes a moment or two but you can see it being converted before your eyes which is neat. Translations are reasonably accurate too.

How to use Safari's improved extensions in macOS Big Sur

William Gallagher's Avatar

Safari positions extensions to the left of the address bar

safari extensions macos

Previously on the Safari web browser it's been a long way behind Google Chrome in its ability to have extensions. You could get third-party utilities that would slot into Safari and extend its functionality in some way, but compared to Chrome, there were few of these extensions.

Right not, there still are only few. But what Apple has done with Safari in macOS Big Sur is going to help it catch up.

We can't see very much of a difference yet, but the changes are under the hood. Developers can now use Apple tools to convert their existing libraries of Chrome extensions into ones that work with Safari.

There are some visual improvements we can see immediately, but what's could happen is that Safari extensions will become much more part of everyone's use of the browser. If you've never used extensions before — or if you're a Chrome user whose favorite extensions have just come to Safari - here's how you get and use them.

How to find and install Safari extensions

  • In Safari on the Mac, choose the Safari menu, then Safari Extensions...
  • The Mac App Store opens and shows popular extensions
  • Browse through the categories or search for "Safari Extensions" and the name of an app you want
  • Click on Get
  • The click on Install
  • Sign in to the Mac App Store if prompted

When you've clicked on Safari Extensions... in Safari, and the Mac App Store opens, everything you can see is an extension. Really what you're seeing is a list of apps, but each one includes an extension.

Choosing the Safari menu and then Safari Extensions opens up the Mac App Store

If you separately search for the phrase "Safari Extensions," then everything you find probably has one — but conceivably it won't. Perhaps a developer has written something like "Safari extension coming" in the description, and that was enough to turn it up in a search.

So that original page with the categories is the safest, fastest way to find what you want. It would be great if you could limit the searches to within that curated section, but at least you can browse through them.

Beside each section, there is also a See All option. And if you scroll to the bottom, there's a chart of the top free and paid apps with extensions.

As these extensions come with apps, installing them is going to be very familiar. However, then running them is less so because you have to enable them first.

How to then enable Safari extensions

  • Open the Safari menu and choose Preferences
  • Click on Extensions
  • Tick an app extension in the list to the left to enable it

Note that an app may include several extensions. It's up to the developer to decide how to describe the extensions so it may not always be clear which one is which.

Rather than ticking to select an extension, though, you can click on the name to open up more details on the right. The panel that opens will include the title, which app it comes from, and explains what it does.

That section will also include an Uninstall button.

How to use Safari extensions

Safari places the extensions in a row to the left of the address bar. Click on any to use the extension.

Extensions have to be enabled before they can be used

Some will present drop down choices — which may include privacy options or limitations on what you want the extension to do. Other extensions will simply open the extension's app. But in each case they will then act on whatever the current Safari page is.

So if it's a login page, the 1Password extension will fill in password on it. An RSS newsreader app will take the page's URL and subscribe to it, for instance.

In every case, what it does is provide quick access to a useful function that you might otherwise have gone off to a separate app. So it's not really adding anything you couldn't do before, but the ability to have it right there under a single button is tremendously useful.

And it's only going to get more useful as developers take advantage of Safari in macOS Big Sur and bring more Chrome extensions over.

Enhance and customize the web browsing experience on iPhone, iPad, and Mac with Safari extensions. Using powerful native APIs and frameworks, as well as familiar web technologies such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, you can easily create Safari extensions in Xcode and distribute them on the App Store in the Extensions category. Xcode 12 and later supports the popular WebExtension API and includes a porting tool to make it easy to bring your extensions to Safari.

How-To Geek

How to uninstall or disable safari extensions on mac.

Don't want to use a Safari extension anymore? Here's how you can uninstall and remove the extension from your Mac!

Safari extensions add additional functionality to the browser. They function like mini-apps, and on the Mac, they are installed and behave as apps themselves. If you don't want to use a Safari extension anymore, here's how to uninstall it.

Mac users who are using Safari 12.0 or higher (running macOS Mojave or newer) will see extensions show up as apps. In fact, the older Safari extension file isn't supported anymore .

Just like the process of installing Safari extensions, deleting them is also convoluted. Safari extensions are downloaded as individual apps. This means that to remove an extension, you have to delete the app that comes with it (after first disabling it).

You can manage Safari extensions from the browser's Preferences menu. Click the "Safari" button from the menu bar and select the "Preferences" button.

From here, go to the "Extensions" tab. You'll now see a list of extensions in the left sidebar. To disable an extension, click the checkmark button next to it.

Some extensions have multiple sub-extensions, so you'll have to uncheck them all.

The extension will now disappear from the extension bar.

You can now delete the extension. From the extension information section, click the "Uninstall" button.

You'll now see a pop-up message that reads that the extension is part of the app and that to uninstall the extension, you'll have to remove the app itself. Here, click the "Show in Finder" button.

This will open the Finder with the app selected. Right-click the app and choose the "Move to Bin" (or "Move to Trash") button.

Enter your Mac's username and password and then click the "OK" button.

The extension will now be deleted. If you see the pop-up message that reads that the app wasn't deleted because it was in use, you'll have to go back to Safari's Preferences menu and make sure that the extension is disabled. Again, ensure that all sub-extensions are also disabled.

Once the extension is deleted (moved to the trash), you'll see that it disappears from the Safari extension bar and from Safari Preferences.

Good - but needs status indicator

EDIT: Developer indicated that Apple does not allow the AdBlock icon to change color when Active vs Inactive. That's frustrating but I'm grateful for the Developer's feedback. FYI Apple - a bit more Developer leniency would be helpful in cases like these to enhance the user experience. ORIGINAL REVIEW: Works well for me - but why doesn't the icon gray out when I pause ad blocking? If I forget to turn it back on, the icon just remains blue and I forget that it's still paused. Please fix.

Developer Response ,

Hi, The blue icon is not something we can change -- Apple does not provide the functionality to gray out the icon if a app is active on a particular page. Because AdBlock is allowing ads, according to Apple, that means it's active. We wish we could change the behavior but we can't! Please do provide your feedback to Apple since this is something they can change. --AdBlock Support

Ad Block forever

Ad Block customer (forever). My MacBook and I - as an internet user(s) can never be without Ad Block. My daily 16 hours internet viewing and/or usage would not be as enjoyable, time efficient or educational - if I was constantly distracted with solitations, promotional items and marketing of products sent to me that I never need or will never purchase - I would not own a computer.
Thank you for your kind words! I'm so happy to hear AdBlock has improved your browsing experience. --AdBlock Support

Stopped Working

I've been using this specific adblock for years and although it works on some of the other machines I own it has stopped working as intended recently. Every now and then an ad would slip by which a quick refresh would fix but now ads still pop up but are blacked out with audio still coming from the ads. I don't think this recent behaviour is deserving of anything less than 3 stars but imo is no longer that 5 star product I used to love.

Tips & Tricks

Troubleshooting, how to uninstall apps on macos sonoma & ventura via system settings.

Uninstalling additional apps in MacOS System Settings is easy

Uninstalling and removing apps is a necessary task on any computer, and the Mac is no exception. One of the benefits of MacOS is that it makes uninstalling applications pretty easy, and there are several ways to go about participating in the removal of apps from your Mac computer. One of the handiest ways to uninstall Mac apps is also one of the simplest, and that is by using System Settings in macOS Sonoma and macOS Ventura.

Other than being super simple, the benefit to using System Settings to uninstall apps is that you can see exactly how much storage space the Mac app is taking up, and therefore how much storage capacity you will recover by removing the app from macOS. This approach is a relatively new feature that has been implemented in MacOS, so if you’re unfamiliar you’re certainly not alone. Just read along and you’ll be up to speed shortly, removing apps quickly.

How to Uninstall Apps from MacOS with System Settings

Only modern versions of MacOS have the System Settings app removal approach, earlier versions of MacOS will not have this particular feature. If you’re running macOS Sonoma, Ventura, or newer, here’s what to do:

  • Go to the  Apple menu and choose ‘System Settings’
  • Select “General” from the sidebar list, and then click on “Storage”
  • Wait for ‘Applications’ to load, which will provide a size estimate, and then click the tiny (i) button next to the Applications size

Click the info button next to Applications to begin the app removal process

  • Now find the application you want to uninstall and remove from the Mac, and then click on it so that it’s selected, and then click on the “Delete” button

Click to uninstall and remove an app from MacOS, deleting it from the computer completley

  • Confirm that you wish to uninstall and remove the app from the Mac by deleting it

Confirm that you want to remove and uninstall the app by deleting it from the Mac

  • Authenticate if requested with an admin account, and the app will be deleted right away
  • Continue deleting other apps from the Mac to uninstall additional applications if desired, otherwise close out of System Settings and be on your way

You can quickly reclaim a lot of storage capacity on a Mac this way, by deleting apps that you don’t use often, or even don’t use at all.

You will instantly recover that storage capacity as well, making this a quick and efficient method to not only recoup some disk space but also obviously to remove the apps from the Mac too.

This is not the only way to uninstall and remove apps from a Mac, and in fact there are multiple other approaches available in varying complexity; the classic old school approach of dragging and dropping apps from the Applications folder into the Trash, a thorough but technical method using Terminal , a super-easy and thorough method that relies on a third party app (and AppCleaner is a great app which we’ve mentioned before several times, including as something that should just be built into macOS since it is so thorough), the LaunchPad trick which is a lot like iOS/iPadOS, and, a variation of this trick is available in prior MacOS versions as well by using the Storage Management feature in those versions. Whichever approach you use is OK, as long as it works for you and your MacOS workflow.

Do you have a preferred method of deleting and uninstalling Mac apps? What do you think of using the Storage feature in System Settings to remove apps from MacOS? Share your own tools, approaches, and wisdom in the comments!

Only shows apps you downloaded from the app store, so for me only shows safari so its useless. better to use app cleaner

If you instead use the free AppCleaner.app, it searches your Mac for all the files and folders associated with the App you are deleting and gets rid of them. I just checked using AppCleaner and it does indeed find and delete files and folders which using System Settings does not.

The only Applications it shows is Safari, even though I have a few hundred apps installed. Ventura 13.6.6.

Regardless, as mentioned elsewhere, what’s really needed is a way to remove all the supporting files, not just the .app/

To uninstall apps on Mac OS I first use Remove-It. Once the files have been deleted I then open up Find Any File and search for any left over files (there always are) There are other apps that do the same job as these two but I chose them for the good results.

My main complaint about deleting apps is that files placed elsewhere on the system will persist. This creates a lot of system clutter over time, and some apps are particularly guilty of placing a lot of large files scattered around macOS and the user library folder.

Good question.

This way to uninstall apps on macOS is completely new for me. However, uninstalling apps using this method also delete associated files (preferences, etc.)? If not, what happen with those files? The system will delete them after?

I use appzapper for years now . It removes all associated system files too

I never knew this existed in Mac OS – does this remove all of the app’s files installed in the system – things like extensions, plists, prefs, etc? thank you

TIME TRAVEL QUOTES

quotations about time travel

Time travel ... will never be impossible forever.

Betelgeuse Incident

How do you decide whether tomorrow's technology includes time travel? Where do you look for evidence that our descendants have discovered the means of temporal voyaging? If time travel is a one-way process forward, there is no way we can know. If, as the new physics suggest, it is possible to move back in time, then the evidence we are searching for will present itself as anachronisms. Human beings are careless. They drop things they shouldn't, like the metal tubes found in Saint-Jean de Livet in France. They are also vulnerable. Whatever safeguards are in place, sooner or later someone will be trapped in a time period other than their own and die there. If the time period is historical, their death will leave no anachronistic trace, but if we examine the depths of prehistory, it becomes possible to trace the series of temporal disasters which left a trail of corpses where they decidedly should not be.

Time Travel: A New Perspective

The truth is, time travel is hard, and people are lazy.

Come here, cat. You wouldn't want to destroy the space-time continuum, would you? Meow. Meow.

To Say Nothing of the Dog

What use was time to those who'd soon achieve Digital Immortality?

Memories with Maya

When I am out there, in time, I am inverted, changed into a desperate version of myself. I become a thief, a vagrant, an animal who runs and hides. I startle old women and amaze children. I am a trick, an illusion of the highest order, so incredible that I am actually true.

The Time Traveler's Wife

Once confined to fantasy and science fiction, time travel is now simply an engineering problem.

Wired Magazine , August 2003

A much-voiced objection to travel backwards in time is that we don't encounter anybody from the future. If it were possible to visit the past, we might expect that our descendants, perhaps thousands of years from now, would build a time machine and come back to observe us, or even to tell us about themselves. Key historical events such as the Crucifixion would have been crowded by throngs of eager witnesses. Discounting reports of ghosts, UFOs, and the like, the apparent absense of time tourists is something of a problem for time travel enthusiasts. Fortunately this objection is easily met in the case of wormhole time machines. Although wormholes could be used to go back and forth in time, it is not possible to use one to visit a time before the wormhole was constructed. If we built one now, and established, say, a one-hundred-year time difference between the two ends, then in one hundred years someone could revisit 2001. But you couldn't use the wormhole to go back and see the dinosaurs. Only if wormhole time machines already exist in nature--or were made long ago by an alien civilization--could we visit epochs before the present. So if the first wormhole time machine were built in the year 3000, there could not be any time tourists in the year 2000.

How to Build a Time Machine

What would happen if history could be rewritten as casually as erasing a blackboard? Our past would be like the shifting sands at the seashore, constantly blown this way or that by the slightest breeze. History would be constantly changing every time someone spun the dial of a time machine and blundered his or her way into the past. History, as we know it, would be impossible. It would cease to exist.

It's this simple: Spacetime implies the possibility of time travel. How it would happen is a question for another time.

"How realistic is the idea of time travel?", Live Mint , May 19, 2017

Time is not a line but a dimension, like the dimensions of space. If you can bend space you can bend time also, and if you knew enough and could move faster than light you could travel backward in time and exist in two places at once.

He made that pffft Parisian cabbies make in early August, when Americans try to parlez avec them at rush hour. He gave me a long over-the-shoulder glare, squeezed the steering wheel, and hit the gas. He said, He's wrong. The one thing that would work is to fly faster than the speed of light, through a wormhole. The gravitational field is full of holes: You only have to find one and be pulled by metagravitational force. For energy you could use a compressed song... (or words to that effect. My memory isn't what it was ten minutes ago).

"Faster than Light", The Cachoeira Tales and Other Poems

Identified with our bodies, which are limited in space and time, we sentient beings have lost the experience (if it can be called that) of residing in timeless, spaceless eternity (now being investigated by physicists studying superstring theory and quantum physics, although they may not think of it in this manner). Time travel frees us from such limitations. This freedom typically occurs when we practice any spiritual discipline that alters the relation between body and mind ... It allows us to move through time and to improve our quality of life by revisiting past errors and learning to forgive ourselves and others.

The Yoga of Time Travel: How the Mind Can Defeat Time

If we could travel into the past, it's mind-boggling what would be possible. For one thing, history would become an experimental science, which it certainly isn't today. The possible insights into our own past and nature and origins would be dazzling. For another, we would be facing the deep paradoxes of interfering with the scheme of causality that has led to our own time and ourselves. I have no idea whether it's possible, but it's certainly worth exploring.
