Safari Lodges in the UK & Overnight Stays at Safari Parks

A safari tent in a grassy meadow

If you’re an animal lover looking for a unique and thrilling experience in the UK, spending the night in a safari lodge might be just what you’re looking for.

Safari parks in the UK offer an opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the world’s most majestic creatures, while UK nature reserves display the best of British wildlife. But what makes both of these experiences truly unforgettable is the opportunity to spend the night in a safari lodge, surrounded by the sounds and thrill of the wild.

In this blog post, we’ll explore some of the best safari lodges in the UK, as well as safari parks and nature reserves that offer overnight stays, so you can plan your next adventure with ease.

Giraffe Lodge @ West Midlands Safari Park

The Giraffe Lodge at West Midlands Safari Park overlooks the park’s African Plains, where guests can enjoy stunning views of the resident giraffe herd grazing peacefully below. The lodges feature spacious and comfortable accommodation with modern amenities, including an en-suite bathroom, flat-screen TV and tea and coffee-making facilities.

After a busy day in the park, you can relax in the lodge’s cosy lounge area with its hanging nest chair, surrounded by beautiful African decor and sumptuous soft furnishings. And in the morning, enjoy a delicious breakfast while watching the giraffes roam from your private balcony, which is protected from the elements by an authentic thatched roof.

Tiger Lodge @ West Midlands Safari Park

As an added bonus, staying at the hotel includes unlimited access to the safari park during opening hours and even after it closes, allowing guests to explore the park and observe the animals at their leisure. Each guest is loaned a golf buggy to help you travel around the park with ease, so you can be the first to see the animals wake up and the last back home after your evening meal at one of the park’s restaurants.

Bear Lodge @ Port Lympne Safari Park

Bear Lodge at Port Lympne Safari Park offers visitors a unique opportunity to stay in a quiet corner of Port Lympne, overlooking some of nature’s most incredible creatures. It’s the perfect place to snuggle up with a glass of wine and a blanket while watching the sunset and the stars ignite. Or, if you’ve made friends on your safari, huddle around the communal firepit toasting marshmallows or telling stories. Bear Lodge is certainly one of the UK’s most rustic safari lodges, but it’s also one of the most authentic safari experiences that you’re sure to enjoy.

5 of the uk’s best safari lodges.

If you had your hopes pinned on a safari this year you needn’t miss out – as you can still get up close to elephants, cheetahs and lions in wildlife lodges across the UK

1. West Midland Safari Park

Cheetahs at West Midland Safari Park (West Midland Safari Park)

Cheetahs at West Midland Safari Park (West Midland Safari Park)

Tanzania might not be an option this year but you can still drive 6.5km through West Midland Safari Park near Birmingham, which is home to zebras, Congo buffalo, Indian rhino and critically endangered Bactrian camels.

To see some of the animals at night – after most visitors have left for the day – you can now stay over in one of the park’s eight new safari lodges.

As well as the lodges, the animals’ habitats have also been renovated, so the park’s three African elephants now have access to an outdoor paddock and drinking pool 24 hours a day. Six of the lodges have large windows and an outdoor deck overlooking the pool, so you can observe Latabe, Five and Sutton as they drink. The two-storey lodges blend in with the paddock as they feature thatched roofs, wooden floors, woven rugs and straw lampshades. The two other lodges overlook the cheetahs’ lair, with floor-to-ceiling windows in the bedrooms providing a perfect view of cheetahs Azrael and Bappe. A Red Panda Cottage is also due to open in spring 2021.

For more information visit West Midland Safari Park .

2. Longleat

A white rhino (Shutterstock)

A white rhino (Shutterstock)

Once the grounds of a 16th century manor house, Longleat opened as a safari park in 1966. Sandwiched between Bath and Salisbury, the reserve is four times the size of London’s Richmond Park, and home to game more at home on the plains of Zimbabwe.

Visitors can drive in their own vehicle or hop on a safari bus to see tigers, white rhinos and lions. Alternatively, you can join a walking safari to see lemurs, African tortoises and the black-headed Somali sheep.

For a close up of the zebras and giraffes, however, book a night in a cottage. There are three to choose from: East Lodge, which includes a guided tour of the grounds, and Keeper’s House and Keeper’s Cottage, both of which include a guided safari tour in a 4x4.

For more information visit Longleat .

3. Port Lympne Safari Park

Friendly giraffes (Shutterstock)

Friendly giraffes (Shutterstock)

Swap Kenya for Kent on a safari at Port Lympne Safari Park on the edge of the Kent Downs. Covid rules permitting, you can choose one of three ranger-led safaris, during which you will see black rhino, wildebeest, ostriches and critically endangered Rothschild giraffes.

For a more intimate experience, stay overnight and see the animals once most guests have gone home. The 243-hectare estate is home to wigwams, shepherds’ huts, a treehouse hotel and an igloo-style ‘bubble’ designed for stargazers. Depending on the accommodation you choose, you might be able to observe Amur leopards from Leopard Creek or watch TV side by side with Adras, Oudrika and their offspring on the other side of an enormous window in Lion Lodge.

For more information visit Port Lympne Safari Park .

4. Camp Baboon

Okapi (Shutterstock)

Okapi (Shutterstock)

Set within the Wild Place Project, this camp on the outskirts of Bristol is home to lemurs, pygmy goats, eland and okapi, which is endemic to the Congo.

The site has 10 wishbone-shaped cabins for overnight guests, who can help feed some of the animals on a morning tour before the site opens to the public. You can also join an evening tour and rangers’ workshops to learn bush craft skills under a canopy in the woods and around a firepit. As well as entry to Wild Place Project, overnight guests can visit Bristol Zoo Gardens for free, too.

For more information visit Camp Baboon .

5. ZSL London Zoo

An Asiatic lion (Shutterstock)

An Asiatic lion (Shutterstock)

There are only 520 Asiatic lions left in Gir National Park in Gujarati in the north west of India. While you may not be able to travel there at the moment, you can see a pride of the endangered animals in Land of the Lions, a breeding centre inside ZSL London Zoo.

The London enclosure is modelled after the national park, complete with railway tracks, a corrugated roof, train station ticket hall and a crumbling temple. Visitors stroll on raised boardwalks over the lions to a viewing area. You can also spend the night in one of nine cabins in Gir Lion Lodge. A stay includes three tours that take place once the zoo is closed to the public.

For more information visit ZSL London Zoo .

Giraffe Lodge – The UK’s Only Overnight Safari Lodge

The 100 acres “Africa Experience” safari park in Kent, England, is a place where many African species are free to roam as if they were at home… except they don’t have to worry about fighting for meager water holes here.

When you arrive, you will get a glass of champagne and meet your enthusiastic guide. You are then taken on a safari experience to rival that of Africa, as all the animals are easily locatable in the vicinity of the lodge.

You then stop at your luxury tented camp, complete with a bar and restaurant. There is an elevated platform, so you can enjoy looking at the animals as you relax.

The open kitchen cooks a five-course African banquet for you and the other explorers, and the day is finished with story-telling and information about the important conservation work owners, The Aspinall Foundation, do in Africa.

The following day features another round of safari adventuring before returning you back to England, where you collect your bags.

Giraffe Lodge was formerly called Livingstone Lodge, and it's in the Port Lympne Wild Animal Park on the eastern bank of the United Kingdom.

The accommodation is in glamping style, in luxurious tents overlooking the 600 acres of the national park.

Abandoned UK theme park reveals plans to become £65million holiday resort with lodges and hotel

  • Ryan Gray , Travel Reporter
  • Published : 10:08, 15 May 2024
  • Updated : 16:43, 15 May 2024
  • Published : Invalid Date,

A DISUSED theme park in the UK is set to undergo a huge £65million refurbishment and be turned into a brand new holiday resort.

Since 2016, Pleasure Land in Cleethorpes , Lincolnshire, has been closed to the public, after dwindling visitor numbers caused it to go out of business.

Pleasure Island theme park in Lincolnshire is set to be converted into a holiday park

Many of the park's rides were sold off, with the rest of the park left to fall into disrepair.

However, after eight years, Pleasure Land looks set for a new lease of life after plans were revealed to convert the site into a holiday park.

The £65.9m redevelopment includes two hotels , with around 222 rooms and an on-site casino.

There will also be 272 holiday lodges, as well as shops including a Lidl , Costa with a drive-through and a garden centre.

The redevelopment of a leisure unit is also part of the plans, with an arcade games operator likely to take over.

Although not part of any formal plans, other mooted attractions include a waterpark, adventure golf , laser tag and a planetarium.

Initially, there had been several issues raised regarding the construction of the holiday resort, including from the Environment Agency (EA) who raised a flooding objection.

However, that has since been removed, after developers added flood measures to their plan, including not using the lodges in winter , taking the park a step closer to its conversion.

The EA has stated in the planning application: "We have now reviewed the Technical Note and are satisfied that the additional modelling undertaken is appropriate."

They aren't the only plans for the park's developers to overcome, with work not able to begin just yet.

Surveys have been undertaken by OS Ecology as part of the planning application and have revealed that the site is home to several bird species.

Meanwhile, Natural England are still against the development going ahead, claiming it could have "potential significant effects on the Humber Estuary Special Protection Area".

For now, the plan remains listed as "pending consideration" on the North East Lincolnshire Council website.

It's not the only theme park to have such plans, with Camel Creek Adventure Park in Cornwall also launching holiday accommodation after going into administration last year.

Plans revealed earlier this year included caravans, safari tents and glamping pods , as well as amenity blocks with showers and toilets.

The theme park was able to reopen in March with three new attractions, including pirate-themed adventure golf, a 7,000 square foot playground inspired by Merlin the magician and an indoor playground and cafe.

At the time, Graham Hayes, the park's general manager, told Time Out : ‘These new attractions are part of an entire park upgrade. We can’t wait to welcome back members, Cornwall families and holidaymakers when we open at Easter .’

The holiday park plans put forward have more than 60 units, with 43 touring pitches, 14 glamping pods, five safari tents and four double en-suite units.

How can I see the northern lights in the UK tonight?

Scientist explains how, when and where to see the northern lights, or aurora borealis, in the UK on Saturday evening

The northern lights might be visible in parts of the UK again on Saturday after the rare phenomenon was spotted across the country overnight.

An “extreme” geomagnetic storm caused the lights, also known as aurora borealis, to be more visible on Friday evening – delighting millions of people across the northern hemisphere.

And for those who missed out, a second chance could arise.

Chris Snell, a meteorologist at the Met Office, said there were sightings “from top to tail across the country”.

Looking ahead to Saturday night, he said: “It is hard to fully predict what will happen in the Earth’s atmosphere, but there will still be enhanced solar activity tonight, so the lights could be visible again in northern parts of the UK, including Scotland, Northern Ireland and the far north of England.”

People visit St Mary's lighthouse in Whitley Bay.

He advised those hoping to see the lights on Saturday to head to an area with low light pollution and to use a good camera.

“The best chance you have of seeing the lights is if you are away from street lights and areas with lots of light pollution, as any type of light does have a big effect,” he said.

“Also, at this time of year, we are fighting the shorter length of nights, so it is unlikely that they will be visible until around 10.30pm or 11 o’clock when it gets really dark.”

Sightings in southern parts of the UK would be less likely on Saturday, although Snell said the lights might be visible through a strong camera lens.

The National Monument of Scotland in Edinburgh on May 10.

Aurora displays occur when charged particles collide with gases in the Earth’s atmosphere around the magnetic poles.

In the northern hemisphere, most of this activity takes place within a band known as the aurora oval, covering latitudes between 60 and 75 degrees.

When activity is strong, this expands to cover a greater area, which explains why displays can be occasionally seen as far south as the UK.
