Tata Safari AC Issue
- Thread Starter pravin1987
- Start date Apr 21, 2015
From yesterday evening, the ac would blow cold air for s ome time and then the compressor keeps clicking between on and off start for every 1 minute or so. Alternatively when I drove it in evening and night( when the outside temp is cold(, the ac compressor works normal. when temp is high, this thing happens. when the compressor keeps clicking, i need to switch off the ac and then switch on back after a few minutes. the same thing happens. the compressor clicking happens when at idle or low speed. when the rpm is above ex: 2k, the cooling is fine, but not cold as it would be. Consulted Tata ASS, they said compressor needs replacement. Gurus help me out.
Storme_on_d_way
It might be a problem with the thermostat. I had faced this problem with my baleno. Maruti guys dhad suggested a compressor change. I took it to a local but reputed ac mechanic and all he did was change the thermostat..although I did get the filter and cooling coils cleaned up along with that. Never gave me a problem for another two years till I sold it off.
Did it get resolved ?
Pravin did you get the AC checked by a local but a reputed mechanic? I also feel its an issue of thermostat and not the compressor as a whole. please do update this thread after your issue gets resolved.

Honoured member.
Hey guys. I too faced this issue in santro having CNG. Mechanic suggested to increase idle rpm and it solved the problem. I didn't know that thermostat could have been a problem. Should i get that checked ? And do you know how much will it cost ? There is no problem with the ac but the high rpm creates engine noise when the car comes to a halt. And one more thing i noticed. The engine heat indicator needle sometimes is bewteen the 2 dots (recommened) and sometimes it's below the dots but never goes up. Is it related to thermostat ?
the vechile has gone for a long trip to kerela. will keep the thread updated.

AC warm at idle, re-charge? 90 Safari 134a updated
- Add to quote
In 2003 we had the AC compressor replaced and it was updated to the 134a refrigerant. Over the last few years the air coming out of the vents at idle has become increasingly warmer. The van needs to be moving along in order to make the AC acceptable. Would this be an indication of low refrigerant? If I go with the refrigerant sold at my local parts store, the one that comes with a guage that attaches to the top of the refrigerant bottle, how do I know what the guage should read in order to not overfill the system? The guage can also be removed and used with additional bottles of refrigerant. I do realize the system could have a leak. Also, see the pic below, the little black plastic knob came off the accumulator. Is this going to cause a problem? ====================== I just found some more information on this website: http://www.aircondition.com/tech/questions/82/ It says: How can I tell if the compressor is bad? Usually the compressor will show the inability to generate enough suction and pressure at or near idle speeds. If engine speed needs to be substantially increased to bring pressures in range, that's a sign that the compressor is getting weak. Often the complaint is... only cools when the engine is reved - or - only cools when driving down the road. Sometimes it's very simple. If we hook the gauges up and see 80 psi on the low side, and 80 psi on the high side, and the compressor hub is spinning, it's likely that compressor is done. It's not producing suction, and it's not producing pressure. We could add or remove refrigerant and still nothing would happen. The compressor must be able to pull a vacuum, and create pressure. ======================== Perhaps my compressor has simply gotten weak of six years of use. David

Your correct on the indication of a low level of refrigerant. It's normal for an A/C system to loose a bit of refrigerant over the years, in this case 7. I don't think you should really worry about a major leak in the system, it took 7 years to loose it's cooling capacities. R134A molecules a pesky little things they are so small they can even pass through the rubber seals of an A/C system. I can't tell you anything about using those cans, I have never worked with them.
You first have to hook a gauge set up to make that determination. The black cap that broke off will have to be removed to service your system... That's the low side port. Seek out a gauge set, A friend perhaps, or a good AC Specialty Shop. Stay away from the we can't fix everything shops. Good Luck and keep us posted. Jim
Most of those are R134a conversion kits. You're van uses R12. They don't play nice together in a system. The system would have to be evacuated and the R12 recovered. Then a vacuum would have to be drawn and the newer R32a would be installed along with some lube for the compressor. If you don't convert the system you'll have to go a certified tech, or become one yourself by taking/passing an EPA test. Otherwise you won't be able to buy R12... anywhere except the black market.
^ he said in his first line that the system was converted to R134a.

Is fan clutch good? Moving lots of air at idle? Try spraying your garden hose on the condensor at idle and see if it gets cold. If it does, that indicates your not getting enough heat out of the condensor. Make sure it and the rad is clean, sealed tight together so the air moves. A set of gauges will tell you the whole story. The fan shoud make lots of noise when the clutch is engages. Since you said it cools good while moving, that says air flow issues over the condensor.

We got home from out trip to the mountains. Upon arrive back in the Phoenix valley, with slower speeds and at idle the AC air temp was most uncomfortable. I stopped at the auto store and decided to try one of the kits. I picked up an Artic Freeze Ultra Synthetic 134a with reuseable pressure meter. Well, this was a bust. I followed the instructions, first being to run the AC on max for three minutes, then connect the hose to the low side, and check the pressure meter. The meter was pegged to the max of 150. I thought maybe the meter had a problem so I tried to see if I could add some 134, when I squeezed the trigger, the meter went to zero. I checked with the guys at Checker and they said the meter going to zero was correct because it would not read when filling. Made sense. I tried adding a little and then decided not to, so as not to damage the system any more than it may already be. I've reviewed the last couple posts with more suggestions and may give them a try tomorrow. At this point I'm sick and tired of sweating like a pig in this beast and I may just take it to an AC repair shop to have it checked. Any thoughts on why the pressure meter may have been reading 150+ ? Could very high low side pressure and warm AC air at idle be symptoms of a specific problem? By the way, thanks again everyone for all the help and suggestions, and next time I will define the destination of any link I include in a post. David
It sounds like the compressor is not doing it's job. I am sure someone more knowledgeable than myself will be along shorty. Keep us posted, so that we may learn with you. Thanks, Jim

Astroplane said: Your ambient temperature was 87 degrees at the time? Let's look at a pressure temperature chart. If the system is filled with R134a, and the pressure is 150 psi, the temperature would be 112 degrees. I'm keeping in mind that the gauge only reads to 150 so it may be higher. Engine heat will affect this as well. 98cirider said: I'm not sure if the clutch on the compressor was spinning, but I would say so. Click to expand...
:banghead: I took my Safari to the shop. Good grief. The compressor ate itself, little pieces of the bearings decided to work themselves through the system. So, new compressor, new condensor, and tubing or lines, or something. All I know is I will be $1500 poorer when this is done. I wish I had the time and knowledge to tackle this job. David
Sorry to hear that David. At least you will have AC when it is done. You will also have some time to study up on this beast we call AC. Jim

Okay, here is the story from today's AC repair, I'll make it as short as possible. Final bill: $1640.71 Breakdown: $499.20: Labor $892.27: Parts $ 14.75: Shop Supplies $ 88.89: Sales Tax What was done: - Remove and replace A/C Compressor - Install new condensor - Install new Accumulator - Replace Orifice Tube, Liquid line or Expansion valve - Replace AC Switch (the one connected to the accumulator) - Replace Manifold Hose - Evac & Recharge on A/C system and added leak dye The system is now back to R12. It had been converted to 134a back in 2003. My repair shop returned the AC to the original OEM components, explaining that anything pre 1994 that was using R12 can remain R12. I had thought that all AC repairs had to be updated to 134a, apparently not. At least not in Arizona. Anyway, it blows really cold. It sat outside for a couple hours in 105 degrees before I picked it up. Within five minutes, the cabin was comfy. And, it blows cold at idle. Yea. If interested, the shop that did the work was Wilhelm Automotive, Litchfield Park. http://www.wilhelmautomotive.com/services.html They are an EPA Green Company. David
The retrofit craze was fueled by high R12 refrigerant prices. The price skyrocketed to ridiculous levels as part of the phase out. We called it Liquid Gold. For anyone that caught it, the EPA Green Company irony is not lost on me. All I care about is that a shop does quality work that they stand behind. Cold air through the vents is what it's all about. Thanks for the follow up, glad to hear it
That is Good News David Enjoy the AC Jim
