Sarajevo War Tunnel Museum

The next stop of the day will be the War Tunnel Museum – Tunnel of Hope, which was the major “blood vessel” for the heavily sieged and destroyed city. At the Tunnel, we shall see a short movie about the War in Sarajevo and Tunnel, followed by going through the Tunnel itself.

At the exhibition part of the museum, we will have the opportunity to see many interesting exhibits directly connected with the Siege of Sarajevo.

Sarajevo War Tunnel was dug in July 1993 and used to be main supply route to Sarajevo during the Siege

Trebević Olympic Mountain

After the Tunnel, we head toward the mountain Trebević, which, by the vast majority of its length, was a first line during the Siege and place of many battles on many battlefields.

We can see where the actual destruction appeared at the site, such as Zlatište, Osmice, Trebević Vidikovac, and many other destroyed facilities and sites.

Moreover, we will see the remains of bunkers, minefields, military tank caterpillar traces, tranches, bullets and grenade shrapnels, and many, many other exciting sites of destruction, which today, at present, haven’t yet been repaired or restored. They stand there like two decades later; the war hasn’t ended yet.

Sarajevo Cable Car

Olympic Bobsled

Sarajevo Bobsleigh, initially built for the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics, is one of the main highlights of the tour. Once there, we can admire the Yugoslavian brutalist architecture and learn more about the unfortunate events that took place at this location during the Siege of Sarajevo since it used to stand on one of the main front lines. However, Bobsled is today featured at the top of the world’s most beautiful abandoned places lists. It holds a fantastic amount of graffiti by artists from around the World, and you have a chance to see them all.

  • East Sarajevo & Lukavica (today Serbian majority part of Sarajevo)
  • Zlatište and Osmice (infamous Serbian army sniper positions overlooking central Sarajevo)
  • Trebević Viewpoint (Cable car final station and Serbian Army-controlled positions during the Siege)
  • The 33 Most Beautiful Abandoned Places In The World
  • 39 Stunningly Eerie Abandoned Places Around the World

The tour is enriched with fantastic panorama views, especially from the top of Trebević mountain. There, you will get the natural feeling of how the great mice and cats game had been played and how the Republic of Srpska forces (VRS), with such a great advantage, never got the real chance to take over Sarajevo city.

Sarajevo Olympic Bobsled Track at Trebevic Mountain

Jewish Cemetery

Upon return to the city, the day’s last stop will be the Jewish Cemetery, known for its historical importance as it is one of the largest Jewish cemeteries in Europe. However, during the Siege of Sarajevo, it was the Republic of Srpska army’s main front line and sniper nest, overlooking the infamous Sniper Alley.

  • Vraca neighborhood (first neighborhood that was controlled by the Army of the Republic of Srpska (VRS)
  • Sniper Alley (we will understand where VRS snipers used to fire from)
  • Grbavica Neighbourhood (VRS controlled part of Sarajevo during the 1992-1995)

Jewish Cemetery Sarajevo

Return to Sarajevo

The tour ends in the old town of Sarajevo.

We pass by:

  • Kovači Army Cemetery (Bosnian soldiers cemetery from 1992-1995)
  • Vijećnica – Sarajevo City Hall (built during the Austria-Hungarian era, destroyed in 1992, reconstructed in 2014)
  • Latin Bridge – Princip’s Bridge (assassination point of Franz Ferdinand)

Went on this tour with Mustafa. What an interesting man and what an informative tour it was. Definitely recommended. And great value for money too.

We learned a lot about Sarajevo and the Bosnian war

We learned a lot about the siege of Sarajevo and the Bosnian war in this tour. Almir was a great guide and we recommend this tour!

A m a z i n g

It was a very personal tour, which we loved. Mustafá was a great guide. He was informative, passionate and took you back in time. 4hrs was short for us and we could’ve spent all day on tour – that’s how enjoyable it was. Do not miss this!!! This is a must!

A thought provoking tour

Mustafá picked us up promptly from our hotel, He was warm and friendly and we really enjoyed out tour with him.

We learnt so much about the conflict and the way he described all the general issues faced during the war, it was made more real because of his personal experiences. He answered all my questions very thoughtfully and I learnt so much.

We only had a few hours in Sarajevo but this tour made perfect use of our limited time.

Brilliant tour

Absolutely fantastic tour – easy booking and transport. Our guide was exceptional – very friendly and pitched the stories (both personal and general history) at just the right level and very friendly too!

Sarajevo War Tunnel – How to See it on a Half-Day Trip from Sarajevo

Sarajevo War Tunnel Half-Day Trip / How to See Sarajevo Tunnel of Hope

  • Last Updated: September 17, 2023

Visiting the Sarajevo War Tunnel (Tunnel of Hope) is at the top of all things to do in Sarajevo . In this article, I will tell you what to expect and how to get there. If you are not sure if you want to take an organised tour or travel independently to see the Sarajevo Tunnel of Hope, you will know after reading this post.

Until the last moment, I wasn’t sure I will go and see the Tunnel of Hope. I wasn’t prepared to pay for an organised tour, and getting there by public transport seemed a bit of a hassle. Besides, I heard mixed opinions and learned that only a small part of the original tunnel can be visited.

But the longer I stayed in Sarajevo and the more I learned about the Bosnian War, the more I really wanted to understand the suffering that the inhabitants of this city had to go through.

After spending 2 hours in a small Gallery 11/07/95  crying my eyes out, I wasn’t sure I could take any more. But then, there are museums that everyone should see …

”It happened, therefore it can happen again: this is the core of what we have to say. It can happen, and it can happen everywhere.”

―  Primo Levi

Table of Contents

What is Sarajevo War Tunnel?

The Sarajevo War Tunnel, also known as the Tunnel of Hope or Tunel Sapsa, was an 800-metre tunnel built under Sarajevo airport that connected the besieged city to the rest of the world. This allowed supplies and people to reach the city, which would otherwise have been impossible or deadly.

The Bosnian war began in 1992 , and its remnants can be seen everywhere. Not only in Sarajevo but also in other parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

From 1992 to 1996, Sarajevo endured the longest siege of any city in modern history, lasting 1,425 days.

The relentless shelling and sniping campaigns that targeted everyone in the city, including innocent civilians, were horrific and inhumane. Sarajevo was surrounded by Serb forces and anyone who tried to enter or leave the city was fired upon.

Sarajevo War Tunnel Half-Day Trip / How to See Sarajevo Tunnel of Hope

The city was completely cut off from the outside world and had to endure unimaginable hardships, lacking electricity, heating, water and medical supplies. There was no way to bring food, people or weapons into the city.

Desperate times call for desperate measures, so in March 1993 the construction of the tunnel began in secret and lasted 6 months. The tunnel was built by the soldiers, most of whom didn’t even know how to build such a tunnel. It was hard, dangerous, exhausting and accompanied by constant fear.

Once completed, the tunnel, which was dug under Sarajevo airport, connected the Sarajevo neighbourhoods of Dobrinja and Butmir and made it possible to bring food, medicine, people and war supplies into the city.

Why is it important to visit the Sarajevo War Tunnel (Tunnel of Hope)

The Tunnel of Hope was a single thing that helped Sarajevo survive and resist.

It was only when I arrived at the museum, walked through the tunnel, saw photographs of those who had built it, learned some of the stories and saw the film, that I realised what an enormous effort it took to build it, but above all how it enabled the city to survive.

Sarajevo has a lot of survival and resistance stories to tell. The story of the war tunnel is one of the most important.

Sarajevo War Tunnel Half-Day Trip / How to See Sarajevo Tunnel of Hope

What to expect at the Sarajevo War Tunnel museum:

The entrance to the museum costs 10BAM/5€. It is open from 9 am to 5 pm.

When you enter the museum, you can download the app with an audio guide. I recommend you do that! Please take headphones with you, because I heard a few people listening to the audio guide loudly, and that could be a bit disturbing.

There is a small section of the original tunnel that starts in the house that you can walk through. Then there is a newer section that is 125 metres long. You’ll be able to see and walk through 2 sections of the tunnel.

Sarajevo War Tunnel Half-Day Trip / How to See Sarajevo Tunnel of Hope

Throughout the tour you will be able to see archival material and photos showing the reality of both, life in Sarajevo under siege and the hardships of building the tunnel,as well as military uniforms and arms, and much more.

There is also a room with a projector where you can see an 18-minute film.

I found the film to be very interestingly done. It is a collage of news and reports from the time, showing the construction of the tunnel, the smuggling of people and objects through the tunnel, and finally photos of Sarajevo under fire.

It’s a simple museum, but often it does not take many words to show what happened.

How to get to Sarajevo War Tunnel

Getting to sarajevo war tunnel on a tour.

Most travellers choose to visit the Sarajevo War Tunnel as part of an organised half-day tour.

An organised guided tour offers many advantages. You will be driven there and back in an air-conditioned vehicle and have a guide who will explain the history and give you some additional important information.

There are several ways to book a guided tour to the War Tunnel in Sarajevo.

You can book your tour with Meet Bosnia, the most popular tour provider in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Their tour costs around €25 and you can contact them via their website.

You can also book on a reputable website like Get Your Guide or Viator, where you also have many other tours to choose from.

Here are some other popular guided tours:

Sarajevo: Tito’s Cold War Bunker Tour

Sarajevo: Grand Walking Tour

Sarajevo: Mostar, Sufi House, Počitelj & Kravice Falls Tour

From Sarajevo: Full-Day Hiking Lukomir Village Small Group

However, I chose to visit Sarajevo War Tunnel on my own and by public transport. For 2 reasons. First, I wanted to save money (since I am a budget traveller) and secondly, I like to do such things at my own pace.

So if you want to find out how to get to Sarajevo war Tunnel by public transport read on …

Getting to Sarajevo War Tunnel by Public Transport

It’s a bit tricky to get to the Sarajevo War Tunnel by public transport, especially now (2023), as some of the tram lines aren’t in operation due to renovations.

Besides, the last part of the journey has to be done on foot anyway, so if you don’t want to walk, you should stick to the organised tour.

But it is totally doable!

So to get to the Sarajevo War Tunnel by public transport, you have to go to Illidza first. Once the trams are fully operational, take tram line 3 from the Old Town to Illidza.

At the moment (July 2023), a replacement bus is running on that part of the route. If you wait at one of the buses stops in the Old Town, e.g. here or here , you’ll see blue Centrotrans buses running every 5 minutes. They all go to Cengic Vila , where you’ll get off. They all go there!

Sarajevo War Tunnel Half-Day Trip / How to See Sarajevo Tunnel of Hope

At Cengic Vila you will see a tram roundabout and you get on a tram to continue the journey to Ilidza. Still with the same ticket. This whole part of the journey costs 1.40BAM and takes about 30 minutes.

Ilidža is a big intersection where all trams end or start their journey and there is a big bus station. There are also many possibilities to have a drink, a meal or just a cup of coffee.

When you’re in Ilidža, you can get a local but to Butmir , but you can also just walk. It’s a nice flat walk of about 35 minutes. If you take the bus to Butmir, you have to get off after 2 stops anyway ( here ) anyway and keep walking.

Sarajevo War Tunnel Half-Day Trip / How to See Sarajevo Tunnel of Hope

I chose to walk from Ilidža and I know other travellers have done the same. I got this advice from another traveller.

There are signposts for Tunal Sapsa, but you can always ask for directions. However, it’s a very straightforward path. There isn’t much around the museum except the airport and a few food stalls.

There is always someone offering a taxi ride at the front of the museum if you don’t fancy a walk back, there is always the option.

Sarajevo War Tunnel Half-Day Trip / How to See Sarajevo Tunnel of Hope

You could of course choose to drive to Sarajevo War Tunner or in fact, rent a car for the whole duration of your Bosna and Herzegovina trip . As much as I don’t recommend renting a car just to see Sarajevo, if you are planning to see more a country, renting a car could be a good idea!

Is the Sarajevo War Tunnel worth visiting?

It is not only worth visiting, but it is also a must-see while in Sarajevo. The Tunnel of Hope museum will show you how and why the tunnel was built and what life was like in the besieged city. It is probably one of the most important museums in Sarajevo.

I hope you decide to take this trip and that my article will be of help and guidance.

Exploring Sarajevo’s Siege: A Tour Through History about Sarajevo under siege tour

Step back in time and embark on a poignant journey through the harrowing days of Sarajevo’s siege. This immersive tour offers a compelling insight into one of the most tragic chapters in modern history, as you walk the streets that bore witness to the horrors of war.

As you traverse the city, your knowledgeable guide will recount the events that unfolded during the siege, shedding light on the struggles and resilience of Sarajevo’s inhabitants. From the iconic sites that became symbols of resistance to the lesser-known corners where stories of survival unfolded, each stop on the tour offers a window into the past.

Sarajevo tunnel museum

One of the most poignant moments of the tour is a visit to the Sarajevo Tunnel Museum , where you’ll learn about the remarkable underground passage that sustained the city during the siege. As you walk through the narrow confines of the tunnel, you’ll gain a visceral understanding of the challenges faced by Sarajevo’s residents and the ingenuity that allowed them to endure.

Throughout the tour, you’ll also have the opportunity to hear personal accounts from survivors, whose resilience and courage serve as a testament to the human spirit in the face of adversity. Their stories offer a powerful reminder of the importance of remembrance and solidarity in the pursuit of peace.

In addition to its historical significance, the tour also provides insight into Sarajevo’s vibrant culture and enduring spirit. From the bustling markets where life carried on amidst the chaos to the solemn memorials that pay tribute to those who lost their lives, every aspect of the city tells a story of survival and hope.

As you conclude your tour, you’ll leave with a deeper appreciation for the resilience of Sarajevo’s people and a renewed commitment to preserving the memory of those who endured the siege. In a world often plagued by conflict, their stories serve as a beacon of hope and a reminder of the enduring power of the human spirit.

of Sarajevo

The siege of Sarajevo began 26 years ago this week (6 April 1992). Lasting nearly four years, it became one of the most dramatic and emblematic events of the violent breakup of the former Yugoslavia and the conflict which left an estimated 200,000 people killed and some 2.7 million refugees and internally displaced – the largest displacement in Europe since the Second World War.

The siege brought enormous suffering and misery to some 400,000 inhabitants of the Bosnian capital at the time. Constantly shelled and sniped, people were cut off from food, medicine, water and electricity. Thousands of civilians were killed and wounded. During the war, people in Bosnia and Herzegovina witnessed every conceivable human rights violation or abuse – ranging from ethnic cleansing and rape to mass executions and starvation.

Graveyard on the Olympic stadium

First stop of our is the Olympic komplex - Olyimpic stadium and Olympic Hall Zetra. Winter Olympic games in '84 were the highest cultural point of Sarajevo as a city. 8 years later Bosnia was in the war, and Sarajevo was under siege. Agressor forces didn't spare olympic komplex.

Historical museum

Historical museum has exibition of the Bosnian war, from beginning and fall of Yugoslavia till Hague tribulal and war crimes. It is horribly ironic but also authentic that a museum such as this, badly damaged during the siege, should now house the permanent exhibtion ‘Surrounded Sarajevo’ which looks at the impact of the nearly four years of war on the city’s citizens. Here, in a non-partisan or judgemental fashion, the story of the siege is told through photographs and artefacts, from hand-made heating, cooking and fighting implements to aid items that came in from abroad.

Tunnel of Hope Museum

In the Tunnel museum you will see how we menage to connect Sarajevo with free Bosnian teritory. Main goal was to bring enough suplies into the city and to bring out the wunded ones. But something else came in the city trouh the tunnel- it was hope, hope for a chance to survive the siege.

Jewish Cemetery (Snipers nest) and Sniper alley

Cemetery gained worldwide fame as the place from which Sarajevo was attacked the most and from which snipers killed innocent citizens as a part of daily routine.

Suada and Olga bridge

The first vicimes of the siege were killed on this bridge by serbian snipers. This bridge is also called Romeo and Juliet bridge- unfortunatly this story has also to do with the war.

Sarajevo roses

Sarajevo roses are marked spots on the streets. On these spots granades and mortar shells fell and killed innocent civilians. We have marked them with red color as a reminder of 11541 killed civilians during the siege.

Markale massacre

This was the main marketplace during the war, crowded with people. Two times serbian forces killed dozen civilians using mortar shell.

This tour provides a basic overview of what you should know about the longest siege waged on a city in modern history.

During your ride in the minibus, your guide will familiarize you with the buildings and places that were important sites during the Siege of Sarajevo (1992-1995). Find out how the war began, why the National Library of BiH (Vijećnica) was burned and how many people were killed in Sarajevo. The drive along Sniper Alley will help you realize what Sarajevans had to go through but how, despite everything, they didn’t lose hope. All of this will serve as an introduction to why the 800 meter-long tunnel (with a height of only 1.6 meters) was so important and how it was the only connection besieged Sarajevo had with the rest of the world. After passing through 20 meters of the original tunnel and watching a film about the war in Sarajevo, your guide will share stories about the role of the tunnel, its construction and use, and will be eager to answer any questions you might have. You’ll have a chance to hear other interesting details on your way back from the tunnel.

Note: There must be at least two individuals for the tour to be given and reservations are required. The cost of the tour includes transport by minibus and admission to the Tunnel of Hope Museum.

Recommendation: bring along some water and a camera.
