Puerto Penasco (aka Rocky Point) is a cruise port and resort city in Mexico's Sonora state, with population over 60,000. The port is located approx 100 km (60 mi) from the USA border (Arizona state). The port is on Gulf of California (aka Sea of Cortez) and on a small land strip joining Baja California with mainland Mexico.
Resort tourism started to develop here since late-1990s, and is now region's main industry targeting mainly the US source market. Next large industry is commercial fishing. Due to its proximity to Arizona’s largest cities - Phoenix (state's capital, population 1,5+ million, metro 4,75+ million), Tucson (pop 0,5+ million, metro 1+ million) and Yuma (pop ~95,000, metro ~200,000), Puerto Penasco is nicknamed "Arizona’s Beach".
Mexican Federal Highway 2 (aka Fed 2) was opened in 2013, runs along the USA-Mexico border and has total length 1987 km (1235 mi). Fed 2 shortens the drive distance from Baja California by 160 km (100 mi). City's largest development projects include 100+ restaurants and 42 hotels-motels.
The resort town is served by Mar de Cortes Airport (aka Puerto Penasco International Airport) located at 15-min drive from downtown (in La Jolla de Cortes). The airport is also very close (5-min drive) from some of Sea of Cortes largest hotels and resorts. The airport currently doesn't serve any regularly-scheduled flights. Only the Mexican carrier Global Air offers domestic charter flights connecting with Ciudad Juarez, Queretaro, and Tijuana.
Puerto Penasco Airport is also Mexico's first 100% privately funded airport being built by Grupo Vidanta (1974-founded Mexican corporation specializing in design, construction, financing and operation of hotels, resorts, beach and nightlife clubs, restaurants, ports, ship cruises). Grupo Vidanta's major businesses include Mar de Cortes Airport (opened 2009), Vidanta Golf (7 premium golf courses in Nuevo Vallarta, Riviera Maya, Riviera Nayarit, Los Cabos, Acapulco, Puerto Penasco), Vidanta Cruises (brand with one liner - Vidanta Elegant , purchased in 2017), Puerto Penasco (cruise port), Vidanta Foundation (non-profit). In 2015, Grupo Vidanta reported USD 750 million annual revenue.
In January 2019, the UK-based company CMV (Cruise and Maritime Voyages) announced its plans to homeport in Puerto Penasco the 550-passenger liner Astoria . Shipping operations were scheduled to start on December 7 (2019) with voyages to Baja California and Mexican Riviera ports. The 11-day itinerary (themed as "Treasures of the Seas of Cortez”) visits as call ports Topolobampo , Mazatlan , Cabo San Lucas , La Paz , Loreto , Santa Rosalia , Guaymas (San Carlos) . Astoria's prices started from USD 1600 per person. With Astoria's deployment, CMV targeted almost exclusively the Arizona USA market.
The Mexican source market is targeted via CMV's brand "Cruceros Marítimos Vacacionales" served by the bigger (1300-passenger) liner Magellan . The CMV ship was homeported in Acapulco and started operations in February (2019). The 2-month program (February-March) was based on 7-day Mexican Riviera voyages out of Acapulco to Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta , Manzanillo , and Cabo San Lucas. Roundtrip departures were also offered from Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta.
In 2020, CMV Astoria had scheduled 3 departures from Rocky Point (Jan 9, Jan 20, Jan 31) on the 11-day “Treasures of the Sea of Cortez” itinerary. Following the 3 voyages, the ship was repositioned (via Panama Canal and Transatlantic crossings) to England (homeports Poole and Hull ) for the rest of 2020.

- Puerto Vallarta
Located at the tip of the Baja Peninsula, Cabo is surrounded by clear waters and sun-kissed beaches. As one of the world’s premier resort destinations, it’s the perfect place to relax, recharge and reawaken your passion for adventure. On a Mexico cruise, tour Todos Santos and enjoy lunch at the Hotel California. Or sail on a catamaran to Lover’s Beach, and snap a photo in front of El Arco on your way.
When it was founded in 1535, La Paz was a quiet bay with roaringly beautiful landscapes. Today the city is still home to sun-drenched beaches and mountains, but it’s also teeming with lively locals and endless activities. During your Sea of Cortez cruise, lounge on the golden shores. Or spend the day downtown shopping for artisan goods — like woven textiles and pottery — at the street side stalls.
While Loreto is known for its cliff-top vistas and sparkling beaches, there’s more to the city than just its scenery. On a Sea of Cortez cruise, visit the missions that give the city its rich history — like Mission San Javier and Mission of Our Lady of Loreto. Or snorkel through the 100-mile Loreto National Marine Park for a chance to see some of the 800 species of fish that swim through the waters.
Between its beaches, aquatic parks and vibrant art scene, Puerto Vallarta’s varied landscapes offer adventures for all. On a Mexico cruise, wander through the city’s galleries, and sample tequila alongside handmade tortillas and salsa. Or stroll along the seafront Malecon boardwalk – the city’s premier shopping destination — where mementos, margaritas and Mexican buffets await.
What to Do on a Baja California Cruise
On a Sea of Cortez cruise with Princess, discover culture around every corner.
- Natural Wonderlands
Inspired by 19th-century California mission-style architecture, Mexico’s cathedrals tell a unique story of times past. On a Sea of Cortez cruise to La Paz, visit the Cathedral de Nuestra Senora de la Paz. Admire the preserved stained-glass windows that decorate its exterior. Then step inside to see a collection of paintings and statues dedicated to Virgin Mary, the city’s patron saint.
Taste, see and meet true Mexican heritage on a Baja California cruise with Princess. In Loreto, stroll down the cobbled streets decorated with multi-colored homes, shops and museums. Sample Mexican seafood — like “chocolate” clams cooked over rocks — while sipping on spicy margaritas. Or meet the locals on a visit to the Main Plaza or during a traditional Mexican fiesta.
Natural wonderlands
From beaches to jungles, Mexico’s landscapes are untamed. During your Sea of Cortez cruise, see these terrains like never before. In Puerto Vallarta, take a boat to Las Caletas, a secluded oasis surrounded by sandy shores and forests. Hike through the island’s interior alongside a local guide, or zipline through the woods at the Kids Adventure Park. Then take a dip in the sea before your boat ride back to the city.
History is an important part of Mexico’s story. On a Baja California cruise, discover tales from ancient civilizations when you visit San Jose Del Cabo, just a short drive from Cabo San Lucas. Between the 18th-century architecture and the Spanish colonial character, let the preserved charm of this rural town transport you to Mexico’s past. Hear stories from locals, and learn city secrets from expert guides.
Sea of Cortez excursions
Our Sea of Cortez cruise excursions introduce you to the people and places that call Mexico home. Embark on an off-road adventure through the jungles of Puerto Vallarta, then enjoy lunch by a hidden lagoon. Kayak along Loreto’s coastline with your loved ones, and horseback ride along Cabo’s sandy shores. Or visit the El Serpentario Reptile Center and Cactus Nursey in La Paz and get up close to enclosed snakes, lizards and crocodiles.
More ashore
Enjoy every second in Cabo with More Ashore overnight stays. On any of our 10-day Baja California cruises, enjoy two days in Mexico’s resort city. Sip on a cocktail while watching the sun set over the ocean. Dance the night away in one of the bustling bars. Or taste Mexican street-food — including smoked fish, tacos and chicken tamales — alongside locals at any of the city’s restaurants.

PHOENIX – The abbreviated inaugural cruise season out of Rocky Point, a popular south-of-the-border destination for Arizona vacationers, embarks this week.
The first Treasures of the Sea of Cortez cruise will set sail from Rocky Point, aka Puerto Penasco, on Thursday for an 11-night voyage.
The ship Astoria, which can accommodate 550 passengers, will span the Gulf of California, or Sea of Cortez, and stop at seven ports , including Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas.
“It’s a beautiful destination,” John Dennis, vice president of Cruise and Maritime Voyages, told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Monday.

First cruise ship will depart from Rocky Point in December
The British-based line originally planned a six-cruise season that was scheduled to start Dec. 7, but the first three sailings were canceled because the Astoria’s arrival from Europe was delayed.
Dennis said a limited number of cabins were available for the remaining Rocky Point cruises of the season, which are scheduled to embark Jan. 20 and Jan. 31.
The drive of around 220 miles from Phoenix to the new port takes less than four hours. The approximately 360-mile drive to catch a cruise ship in San Diego takes close to six hours.
Dennis acknowledge concerns about safety for Americans driving through Mexico in the wake of recent attacks in other parts of the country.
“It’s been something that’s been obviously top of mind for us and I think our travelers as well,” he said. “Most of our passengers are coming via coaches from Phoenix and from Tucson, not necessarily so many individual cars transiting.”
The states of Arizona and Sonora have committed to creating a safety corridor with additional security along the route, Dennis said.
“We’re very, very optimistic that it will be event free and everyone will be able to enjoy a spectacular cruise and it will be the first of hopefully many seasons,” he said.

First cruise ship will set sail from Rocky Point in December, reservations already open
TUCSON — After several years of planning and much anticipation, the first cruiseliner will depart from Puerto Peñasco — more commonly known as Rocky Point north of the border — and set sail around the Gulf of California in the first week of December, Sonora state officials said over the weekend.
Cruise and Maritime Voyages (CMV), a privately owned British company with experience offering cruises along Mexico's Pacific Coast, will launch the service with its cruiseliner Astoria 's maiden voyage Dec. 7.
The company is already booking reservations for the six dates in the route's inaugural season, running from late 2019 to early 2020.
The 250-cabin cruise ship has capacity for about 550 people, said John Dennis, CMV's vice president of sales and marketing. He expects a large bulk of those passengers to come from Arizona.
"It's always done very, very well as far as a cruise passengers source market," Dennis said. "So, it seemed to favor us basically saying 'yes, we wanted to' ... for a lack of a better term, 'be the official cruise line of Arizona and Sonora.'"
Titled "Treasures of the Sea of Cortez," the 11-day voyage will take passengers to eight ports along the Gulf of California (also called the Sea of Cortez), starting and ending in Rocky Point.
Rates start at $1,399 per passenger, according to the website.
Rocky Point aims to become player in cruise industry
The development is a major step in the Sonora state government's plans to turn Puerto Peñasco into a major player in the cruise industry.
Sonora Gov. Claudia Pavlovich met with Dennis, along with state and local tourism and development leaders, in Hermosillo on Friday before the announcement.
Her administration said it hopes Cruise and Maritime Voyages will be the first of many companies to use Rocky Point as a home base for future cruises and boost the area's economy.
MORE: Rocky Point cruise-ship port gets a new lifeline
"We're more or less estimating that the economic impact per port for these six voyages will be between $100,000 to 200,000," said Hector Platt Mazon, the subdirector for the Sonora Tourism Commission.
"We don't have a base from where we can measure, so it's a bit complicated coming up with an exact figure," he added.
But Sonora's plans have encountered serious roadblocks.
For starters, construction of a home-port dock for cruise ships in the city had languished for years. To date, there's no finalized timeline for its completion because of a lack of funding.
Adided by Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey, Pavlovich secured $13 million in the Mexican federal government's 2018 budget to renew construction of the home port.
That money is expected to cover the completion of the project's first of three phases by 2020.
But an additional investment of $80.5 million will be needed to cover the remaining two phases, according to the state.
Cruise will use 'tender embarkation'
Although CMV is acutely aware of those challenges, the cruises will set sail from Puerto Peñasco in December, even if the home port remains unfinished, Dennis said.
After visiting the area and meeting with state and local officials to review their options, the company said the most likely option will be a "tender embarkation," in which passengers are taken by smaller boats to the ship, instead of having them directly board it.
"The key thing for us was trying to bring in a ship that would allow us to facilitate this," he said. "Other vessels that we had in the fleet are much larger, and unfortunately, while we did review bringing in a larger vessel into Peñasco, that would've probably been much more of a logistical challenge for us and for the local community."
Although the details aren't set, Dennis said the company is considering ferrying passengers from the marina, near the city's downtown, to the cruise ship, which would be docked about 20 minutes offshore in the bay.
The voyage will take off from Rocky Point and dock at seven other cities spanning three Mexican states along the Gulf of California.
The seven cities are: Topolobampo and Mazatlan in Sinaloa; Cabo San Lucas, La Paz, Loreto and Santa Rosalia in Baja California Sur, and Guaymas in Sonora.
The six dates scheduled so far are Dec. 7, 18 and 29 in 2019, and Jan. 9, 20 and 31 in 2020.
Dennis said CMV is optimistic about the launch. And depending on its success and reception, Dennis added, the company envisions making it a yearly offering. With time, the company envisions possibly having year-round service with shorter cruises, he added.
3,000 spaces available for cruise
Arizona tourism officials welcomed news of the first cruise ship sailing off from Rocky Point in December. The two states have been working closely to push for the home port's completion.
"This is great news for Sonora, and for travelers who want to explore the Sea of Cortez from Arizona," Debbie Johnson said in a statement. She's the executive director for the Arizona Office of Tourism.
MORE: Arizona joins call for cruise-ship port at Rocky Point
"It's also another stepping stone toward a completed cruise port in Rocky Point, which would continue to strengthen tourism commerce in — and between — Arizona and Sonora, and is something Governor Ducey and Governor Pavlovich have long supported," she added.
Johnson's counterparts in the Sonora Tourism Commission said they would draft plans to market the cruise and attract the 3,000 passengers for the six scheduled dates.
Platt Mazon said those plans likely will include heavy promotion and messaging in Arizona.
"These cruises, which will take off from here in December, are as important for Arizona as they are for us," he said. "And we're certain that since Puerto Peñasco is Arizona's natural beach, there will be lots of opportunities to exploit this new tourism attraction."
Hector Vasquez, president of the Puerto Peñasco Convention and Visitors Bureau, said his agency will begin meeting with local business owners in the area to finalize preparations ahead of the cruise launch date.
The number of visitors to Rocky Point has been rising, topping 2 million in the past few years. The majority of those visitors are from Arizona.
That gives him reason to believe that the cruises will add to the resort town's attractiveness and draw even more visitors.
"This is a new product," he said. "I think we will be successful. Why? Because in no other place will you find the beauty of the Sea of Cortez."

History was made for Rocky Point yesterday as the CMV Cruise LIne vessel Astoria arrived to begin cruise service. The 11 day ‘Treasures of the Sea of Cortez’ itinerary includes stops in Mazatlan, Cabo San Lucas, La Paz and more. A first in all of Mexico, this Home Port voyage begins it’s trip from within Mexico.
The ship arrived in the early hours of January 8th. To celebrate it’s arrival, a special tour was arranged that would benefit the cities DIF social cervices organization.
Guests were shuttled out to the Astoria aboard the local sunset cruiser Ecofun. The ship is a classic design. When they say ‘they don’t make them like that any more’, it’s true. You get a real sense of the quality built into boats of this era (constructed 1946), made before robotics.
The boat is beautiful and scaled down compared to today’s giant cruise vessels. The Astoria has excelled with niche market cruises that are perfect for a smaller set of passengers (capacity around 500). The Treasures of the Sea of Cortez is designed to appeal to adult travellers who want a less glitzy cruise experience.
The coastal towns of the Sea of Cortez are an interesting mix of colonial Mexico, and modern tourist spots. All of it is encompased within the incredible beauty found where the deserts meet the ocean in western Mexico.
The 11 day cruise begins today. There will be an inauguration ceremony at the towns Malecon featuring an appearance by the Governor of the State of Sonora, Claudia Pavlovich.

Rocky Point Mexico, Arizona's Beach Getaway
By AZ Leisure Staff Writers
There's something so special about spending a vacation along ocean shores that feature astounding ocean horizon views and white sandy beaches. It's serene tranquility away from day-to-day hectic routine. When Arizonans get the urge, they've always headed west to San Diego. And they still do, because after all, San Diego is one gorgeous place.
But more and more Arizona vacationers are discovering some equally beautiful seaside beauty in the Rocky Point area on the Sea of Cortez in Mexico which is only about 60 miles from the Arizona border. Both Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona are under 220 driving miles to Rocky Point which is what the gringos call Puerto Penasco.
So Rocky Point Mexico is a much quicker and shorter drive than to San Diego and features luxury hotels, resorts and highrise condos overlooking panoramic views of the Sea of Cortez horizons. Vacationers enjoy the white sandy beaches four-wheeling, horseback riding in the surf, boating, fishing and some pretty nice golf courses as well. It has many of the same type of attractions and enticements as does San Diego, but Rocky Point can boast something uniquely special and that is the charm and culture of Old Mexico.
Evolution of a Resort Town
Activities, Recreation and Adventure
Rocky Point boasts many stunning beaches. Clear water beckons vacationers to swim, snorkel, and scuba dive. The area is also a popular fishing destination. Sailing, skydiving, and beachcombing are also popular activities for travelers. Nightlife and fine restaurants are abundant. The town’s flavor is a rich sample of Mexican hospitality. Whether sipping cocktails at one of the luxury hotels or enjoining tacos from a local street vendor, there is something for everyone in Rocky Point. Travelers typically camp, rent villas or condominiums, or stay at the local hotels many of which are very affordable.
The Rocky Point Experience
Dining on the oceanfront, sport fishing with friends, skipping through a tide pool, enjoying the sunset over the sea—relaxation and rejuvenation await travelers to this seaside gem. With accommodations and activities to suit any budget, this simple town is filled with a wide array of interesting restaurants and shops. The beaches are lovely, clean, and welcoming. Some even say the sea lions here are friendly and might even join you for a swim. In any case, a trip to Rocky Point offers all the elements that make for the best of vacations.

Sights set on advancing Home Port in Rocky Point
Sonora Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño continues to stress the goal of promoting cruise lines in the Sea of Cortez, noting progress in the goal to rescue and restart Rocky Point’s Home Port.
At a press conference during one of his recent visits to Puerto Peñasco, Governor Durazo detailed current promotional work with cruise lines looking to make the Sea of Cortez an attractive route for 2-4 night cruises. While not on a grand scale, it’s worth noting these efforts did lead to the December arrival of a cruise ship to the port of Guaymas.
The Puerto Peñasco Home Port, meant to be a departure and arrival port for cruise ships into the Sea of Cortez, was begun in 2013 and progressed about 40% toward completion before being mired in litigation. At the time, the project was expected to cost 1.2 billion pesos.
The Governor explained if the government moves forward with the project in Puerto Peñasco, the litigation would be null and void. Through negotiations with cruise lines, along with progress to infrastructure, there could one day be the possibility of providing good news as to a cruise line’s interest in the Sea of Cortez.
Governor Durazo has repeatedly emphasized the strategic importance of Puerto Peñasco for tourism in northwestern Mexico. With its proximity to the urban centers of Arizona, Puerto Peñasco has the opportunity to be a gateway to the Sea of Cortez for thousands of cruisegoers. This would represent economic advantages and a boost in tourism for Sonora in general, which is the overall goal.
Currently, the unfinished home port jetty extends into the water just to the east of the Reef and has become a popular spot for snorkeling or scuba diving when the water is clear.
