My fiancee and I traveled to Tanzania during covid. We summitted Kilimanjaro and did a 6 day safari through Migration Venture and had an amazing time from start to finish! Migration is an extremely professional family-operated company. Amos was especially responsive over Whatsapp while we were planning the trip. We did the Lemosho trek with Amos's brothers Issa and Goodluck who made the entire experience very memorable. They even offered to carry our daypacks for us when we got tired, which definitely helped us make our way to the summit. We ended up summiting and coming down in just 6 days, so we added two days to our original 4-day safari, which Amos was able to swiftly organize. After coming down from the mountain, Amos took us out to a nice dinner in town with Goodluck. We really felt like family! We did the Safari with Brighton and John, who were also excellent. John was extremely knowledgeable about the animals and Brighton was a very professional driver. The lodges we stayed at were very high-end and better than expected. Amos is very resourceful and will go above and beyond to make sure your needs are met. He even helped us organize a covid test in Zanzibar so we could fly back to the U.S. Overall, I would highly recommend Migration Venture to anyone looking to explore Tanzania. They exceeded all expectations!!

Camping Safari Selous Southern Tanzania

I took my family on a trip to Southern Tanzania with Kilimanjaro Wonders Expedition Safari on a 12 days safari package to Selous, Mikumi, Ruaha, and Udzungwa. Our guide Goodluck was amazing. He was friendly with the 5 of us and by the end of the safari he had become like family. He was also very professional and knowledgeable about birds. I thought that no one knew more things about birds than my wife, but Goodluck did. The southern parks were very different from the Northern ones with low traffic and different habitats. We stayed at wonderful hotels and lodges that had great service and staff was wonderful. Thanks to Kilimanjaro Wonders Expedition Safari for the amazing experience.

The Selous is a majestic place in which to see wildlife. Animals and landscapes are what we come on safari to see and this reserve certainly doesn’t disappoint. With us you can take full advantage of the Selous offering, one of the most diverse range of activites available in any natural wildlife parks in the world. Experiment with the different activities available to you by either driving, boating, or walking.

Day 1: Dar es Salaam to Selous Game Reserve

You’ll start at 6.30 am from your hotel in Dar es Salaam and drive to the Selous. After reaching Selous, start with an afternoon boat trip. Usually, the afternoon boat trip leaves camp at 4.00 pm and returns at 6.30 pm. It’s an ideal trip if you would like to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Rufiji River with many hippos, crocodiles, and beautiful birdlife. The sunset can also be stunning from the boat. There is nothing quite like the serenity of the river while the sun dips below the horizon. Rufiji is a large wide river with several lakes branching off it for you to explore, gaining a unique view of the river’s largest inhabitants: crocodiles and hippos. Boat safaris are also the best excursions for bird enthusiasts. Selous has over 350 bird species, and the river is the place where they congregate in great numbers and are easily seen in the open environment. You might also want to try your luck with the ferocious tiger fish and weighty catfish that live in the waters in abundance.

Day 2: Selous Game Drive

The day will be spent on game viewing in the game reserve. The safari guide points out rare species of animals like wild dogs, sable antelopes, black rhinoceros, Nile crocodiles, and hippos along the banks of the Rufiji River. Cape buffalo, hartebeest and eland can also be spotted. Your picnic lunch and drinks will be served in the wilderness. Later, you’ll head back to the gentle grunting of the camp for dinner and your overnight stay.

Day 3: Selous Game Reserve -Dar es Salaam

You’ll have an early morning breakfast at the camp and start a sunrise bush walk. Walking safaris are a fantastic way to get close to nature and learn more about the smaller species and the bush itself. It’s an unforgettable experience to walk within such a vast and untamed area of the natural reserve. The walks are about 2-3 hours long. Usually, walks leave the camp at 6.00 am -6.30 am after having a cup of tea and some homemade biscuits or doughnuts. Afterward, you’ll walk back to the camp for breakfast. Then start your way to Dar es Salaam or take a boat to zanzibar.

Crocodile itinerary: 3 days in Selous Park in southern Tanzania

Arrival in Selous + Safari by Boat

You will arrive at the Selous – Mtemere Airstrip early in the morning, by 9:30 a.m., where you will be welcomed and taken to the Selous Park , the largest park in all of Africa (Flight from Dar Es Salam or Zanzibar not included, except on request).

Arriving at the Selous Wildlife Reserve, you will begin enjoying the beautiful day of boat safari . The Selous is in fact one of the few parks in Africa where you can do a game drive in water .

You will explore the Rufiji River and some of the lakes in Selous, accompanied by a guide, with special open boats having canvas roofs. Boat safaris are the ideal way to enjoy the wonderful scenery of the Rufiji River with its many hippos, crocodiles, and multitudes of birds. Certainly not to be missed is the sunset view from the boat, in which the tranquillity of the river and the cry of the hippos around you syncs with the scenery of the sun descending below the horizon.

Packed lunch will be served at the park.

We continue exploring the Selous with a jeep photo safari after breakfast.

The wildlife reserve of Selous ( Selous Game Reserve ) is one of the largest wildlife parks in the world, with a total area of 54,600 square kilometres. Some wildlife typical of the savannah (such as elephants, hippos, lyacons and crocodiles) are found in the Selous in higher concentrations than any other African park.

The vast beauty of the Selous and its abundance of wildlife are exceptional, and one of the attractions of the Selous in particular is the intimacy and authenticity of a safari here, where you can go for hours without encountering any other vehicle.

We will stop at a shaded space for picnic lunch during the hottest part of the day, usually under a large tree overlooking a lake – this can sometimes be one of the highlights of the day, as it is not uncommon for animals to come and drink while you enjoy your lunch.

Then the game drive continues into the afternoon.

Dinner and overnight accommodation at the lodge.

Selous Park + Nature Walk + return by plane

We will take a nature walk after breakfast, accompanied by an armed Park Guard and our guide.

Walking safaris are a great way to get closer to nature and learn more about the smaller species and their ecosystem. You can spot giraffes, walk in the footsteps of elephants, learn to identify animal tracks and discover fascinating information about insects, trees and colourful birds. Walks are slow and last about 2-3 hours.

Lunch will be served at the camp.

You will then be taken to Dar Es Salam or Zanzibar by local flight in the afternoon (flight not included, except on request).

This amazing 3 Days safari from Dar es Salaam to Selous, in southern Tanzania will take to the largest Game reserve in the whole of Africa – the Selous Game Reserve . The reserve covers an area of over 50,000 square kilometers, making it larger than Switzerland and Denmark, as well as three (3) times larger than the popular Serengeti National Park found in Northern Tanzania. The Selous has since been gazetted as a fully fledged national park in Tanzania and therefore now manned and managed by Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA).

3-Day safari to Selous from Dar es Salaam, Where to visit?

The Selous Game Reserve is the most popular of Tanzania’s southern tourist destinations, and it supports very large numbers of animals including: half Tanzania’s total elephant population (about 30,000 elephants), approximately 200, 000 buffaloes and nearly 80,000 wildebeests, vervet monkeys, giraffes, impalas, colobus monkeys, sable, hartebeests, elands, kudus, and baboons. It is also home to the largest population of the African wild dogs a species that is highly in danger-of-extinction most of which you will see during your game drives conducted in our nice four wheel drive (4X4) safari vehicles.  The safari will begin and end in Dar es Salaam.

Where to stay during the 3 Days Selous safari (Nyerere National Park)

This 3 days adventure the the famous Selous, now Nyerere National Park is a midrange safari. Accommodation therefore will be nin nice modest lodges or tented camps as per the detailed itinerary on the next tab. In this package we have included the Selous Mapumziko Lodge a nice mid-range lodge with great value for money. The lodge rooms come in two styles; the african traditional mud huts and the tented rooms. The mud huts are well finished in the inside and some even come with a functional Air conditioning.   You can choose which rooms you like in advance and we will confirm as per your preference.

This 3-day safari in Selous Game Reserve starts and ends at Dar es Salaam but we can also arrange the same safari starting and ending at Zanzibar Island, with flights included from Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam or direct flights from Zanzibar to Selous Game Reserve and back to Zanzibar Island . 3-day safari in Selous Game Reserve – Detailed Itinerary

Transfer from dar es salaam to selous (nyerere national park.

Pick up this morning from your hotel or residence in Dar es Salaam, by your safari guide and you will start on your way straightaway to the Selous Game Reserves.  You will be taking the newly gravelled road that goes through Kisarawe  because it is shorter. Once at the lodge, you will check-in and settle in before having  hot lunch at your lodge or camp.

After lunch and a short rest you will be taken to the jetty, where you will have a boat ride safari on famous River Rufiji as a way of relaxing and having an introduction to this great wildlife habitat. You will encounter some hippos, crocodiles and various birds during this ride. If lucky you might see some animal action as a crocodile hunts down its prey.

Later in the evening, you will return to you accommodation, relax by the campfire, have dinner and spend the night there. Dinner and overnight will be at Selous Mapumziko Lodge . Lunch and dinner included. 

Explore Selous Game Reserve

Today is fully dedicated to exploring the vast plains of the Selous Game reserve which was named after a renowned early European explorer – Fredrick Selous. After an early breakfast at the lodge, you will be met by your safari guide/driver and then set out on game drives in our four wheel drive safari vehicle. Considering the fact that this reserve covers an area of 54,600 sq km, it is believed to be among the largest unspoiled wilderness on the African continent, a reason for which it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982.

While on the game drives you will explore the different wildlife habitats (that vary from rolling savannah grassland plains, savannah woodlands and rocky out crops that are believed to have been cut by the Rufiji River) as you search for Africa’s Big Five animals and the other different species that live here among which are: lions, zebras, elands, impalas, buffalos, bushbucks, elephants, oryxs, crocodiles, waterbucks, hippos, sable antelopes, klipspringers, pukus, duikers, giraffes, greater kudus, Lichtenstein’s hartebeest, as well as the occasional leopards and spotted hyenas, not forgetting the largest thriving population of the endangered wild dogs. Rhinos on the other hand, can only be seen within the southern part of the game reserve. Your driver / guide will be able to stop whenever you want to enable you take as many photographs as you want; so don’t leave your camera behind. The Selous will not disappoint bird lovers as well, as there are very many bird species found here some living within the forest, the river banks as well as in the swampy areas. Walking Safari in Selous, Depart to Dar es Salaam

3 day selous safari tanzania – itinerary, day 01: dar es salaam - selous.

On the first day of the safari you will leave Dar es Salaam early morning and drive to Selous game reserve. Selous is quite a distance so you will arrive by mid day and on arrival and after lunch; you will go for a boat ride in the Rufiji River. Crocodiles, hippos and hippos can be seen here as well as other animals as they converge to quench their thirst. Crocodiles take advantage to hunt their prey and you might be treated to sights of animal action if lucky. Overnight at  Selous Mapumziko Lodge perched right at at the banks of Rufiji River.

Day 02: Selous Game Reserve

On this day you will spend a full day in the vast Game Reserve doing game drives in search of animals like elephants, zebras, gazelles, impalas and the rarest of all; the African Wild dogs. This Game Reserve was named after a prominent European explorer; the late Fredrick Selous and the reserve has since been declared a world heritage site by the UN body UNESCO. This game reserve is roughly the size of Switzerland and it covers unexploited African wilderness with topography that varies from rolling savannah grassland plains, savannah woodlands and rocky out crops that are believed to have been cut by the Rufiji River. Among the activities on offer here includes boat trips, a walking safari and game drives by 4×4 vehicles. Overnight at  Selous Mapumziko Lodge . All meals included.

Day 03: Selous - Dar Es Salaam

Early morning game drive or a nature walk then after breakfast you embark on your drive back to Dar es Salaam by road.  You will arrive Dar es Salaam in the afternoon if you drive by road.

If you are flying to Zanzibar then you will be transferred to the airstrip to take your flight to Zanzibar.

This tour can be done as a camping Safari in public Campsites just outside the Game reserve of Selous. Flying safaris from Zanzibar can be arranged to Selous as well as safari packages to Selous from Arusha town in Northern Tanzania.
