Boomer Travel

There are many reasons to travel: to live, experience, see, discover, connect. Many travel to expand their horizons or see their own life in a new way. One of the best ways to have a layered travel experience is to travel with your extended family to Utah, enabling not only a bonding experience for the family, but adding generations of perspective on the experience. Travel Tips

  • Please note, traveling at high elevation means carrying layers for chilly evenings much of the year and extra water to fend off altitude sickness, no matter the season.
  • If anyone in your party feels tired or light-headed, drink some water and take a break — you'll want to slow down to enjoy the scenery, anyway!
  • For multigenerational travelers, choose destinations that have a range of activities to keep everyone involved when they want to play, or have options to relax between activities or to split up when more active family members wish to extend the adventure.

Top National Sites for Boomers and Multigenerational Travelers

National parks, monuments and recreation areas can provide one of the most accessible outdoor vacation experiences around.

Luckily, Utah has  five national parks  and 14 other national monuments, and recreation areas to help you fill your dance card. In the south, Lake Powell  is a popular destination for house and speed boating while anglers will appreciate the trophy trout of  Flaming Gorge  and the  Green River in northeastern Utah. All five national parks have scenic byways and stretches of paved or improved trails for travelers with limited mobility, yet all the parks also have extensive backcountry if your family heeds the call of the wild. In short, Utah's national parks enable families to custom build an itinerary with options for every age and ability.

Suggested Itineraries

Intinerary #1: zion to bryce.

Launching Point:  St. George , Utah, home of championship golf, Dinosaur Discovery Site at Johnson Farm and an emerging fine dining culture.

Day 1: Explore Awesome Zion

There's no mistaking it,  Zion National Park  is a bucket-list destination. For that reason, it welcomes a lot of annual visitors. Weekends are the busiest time, especially late morning to early afternoon. Book early for Springdale hotel accommodations, or consider an earlier departure from a base camp in St. George. No matter how you plan it, you must visit Zion National Park.

All-access pass

You'll find all generations enjoying the Human Past Museum, Emerald Pools and the Riverside Walk and take the scenic drive through the Zion-Mt. Carmel tunnel.

The Must See

The Riverside Walk is a paved, 1-mile journey from the Temple of Sinawava to the mouth of the Narrows. You will be joined on the journey by travelers from around the world. Canyon walls rise on either side of the river, where kids old and young splash around. Walking sticks line the wall for those prepared for the riverbed hike into the Narrows. Wear hiking boots appropriate for safely navigating rocky riverbed. Though flash floods can occasionally prohibit entry into the canyon, there is nothing like the echo of thunder through Zion Canyon or the cooling afternoon rains of the monsoon season. For fit travelers, Angels Landing is must-hike trail. But its final quarter-mile traverses a narrow ridge — it requires a great amount of caution and care, and is not recommended for small children or people with a fear of heights.

State Park Alternative

Snow Canyon State Park  explodes with dramatic geology perfect for your outdoor adventure – and photo opportunities. With much of the look and feel of Zion National Park, you'll enjoy hiking among the sandstone cliffs, petrified sand dunes and broad lava fields.

Day 2: Get Inspired in Bryce Canyon

Bryce Canyon National Park  is also very popular. The moment you first set eyes on its shockingly original and vast amphitheater of orange hoodoos, you'll know why. Accommodations in the park's lodge and nearby Bryce Canyon City can fill up quickly, so book in advance. Nearby towns on the All-American Road Scenic Byway 12 offer alternatives. Believe us when we say you won't mind the drive into the park.

The scenic drive accesses multiple overlooks into the vast amphitheaters of Bryce Canyon, granting bird's-eye views of hoodoos, spires, bridges and beyond into rugged backcountry.

The Rim Trail between Sunrise and Sunset Point and Yovimpa Point are short, easy trails with rewarding views. Also check for learning opportunities such as ranger-led full moon hikes or astronomy lessons under Bryce Canyon's pristine night skies. Under clear skies during the full moon, you'll feel like you have night vision as a moon so brilliant illuminates the entire canyon.

Bigger Adventure

Navajo Loop/Queen's Garden is a 3.1 mile loop that takes hikers down to the canyon floor for an all-together different view of the hoodoos. The drop in elevation makes for a heart-pumping hike back up, but very doable for most ages.

Day 3: Cedar Breaks National Monument and Brian Head Resort

Continue the expedition by driving up to 10,000 feet where short hikes access the rim of the astonishing  Cedar Breaks National Monument  and the quaint mountain town of Brian Head offers access to all manner of mountain adventure for outdoor enthusiasts and the comforts of luxury spas and dining for those in the family ready to relax and unwind.

Suggested Itinerary 2: Salt Lake "City Safari"

As with so many trips to Utah, a successful multigenerational trip can start in Utah's capital,  Salt Lake City . Utah's vibrant urban corridor is an intriguing destination for multigenerational travel because it combines the best cultural amenities of a big city with incredible outdoor recreation opportunities.

Best of all, you'll spend much less time driving thanks to the proximity of our mountains and excellent infrastructure.

Brigham City ,  Ogden  and  Provo  are all major cities along the Wasatch Front, but the cultural heart is Utah's capital, Salt Lake City, just minutes from Salt Lake International Airport and a few minutes more from world-class outdoor recreation.

Day 1: Peak Family-Friendly Culture

Though Utah is widely renowned for its great outdoors, you'll also discover a thriving capital city with a number of cultural attractions to enrich your visit.

Natural History Museum of Utah, Living Planet Aquarium, Red Butte Garden and Arboretum, Tracy Aviary, Family History Library, Discovery Gateway and Clark Planetarium, The Leonardo,Utah's Hogle Zoo. Salt Lake is also home to the  Utah Jazz  professional basketball team and the Major League Soccer team  Real Salt Lake .

On this family trip, seasoned travelers may wish to check out Salt Lake's complete package of professional performing arts, including the Utah Symphony and Utah Opera, Ballet West and multiple theater companies. (Read: " Salt Lake City: A Place to Play ")

Stick together by exploring the art, science and technology exhibits at The Leonardo and walking the Association of Zoos and Aquariums-accredited Hogle Zoo then let the grandparents research their genealogy at the Family History Museum while the kids hit the nearby planetarium.

Local tour companies like Salt Lake City Tours and City Sites whisk you around the city with narratives of historic sites and top points of interest.

Day 2: Peak Adventure Family Vacations

If you're traveling to Utah, you can't ignore the incredible outdoor recreation. Whether driving or flying into Salt Lake City, you'll be surprised by the proximity and drama of the backyard Wasatch Mountain Range. So while you could easily fill a weekend with culture and dining, active travelers won't want to forgo a trip into the mountains for hiking, mountain biking, fly-fishing, wildflowers in the summer and skiing in the winter, among many other activities.

Adventure-rich canyons and trailheads line the Salt Lake Valley, which means a trip to Salt Lake can also feed the adventurous spirit of your family, whether that means mountain biking the Bonneville Shoreline Trail and renowned Wasatch Crest, hiking among wildflowers in designated wilderness or skiing and riding  The Greatest Snow on Earth®  in the winter.

Nearby mountain resorts like  Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort ,  Park City Mountain Resort  or  Deer Valley Resort  in the Park City area (an all-encompassing mountain town just over a half-hour from Salt Lake),  Snowbasin Resort  near Ogden or Sundance Mountain Resort near Provo all offer a one-size-fits-all vacation retreat for the whole family. Several of Utah's  state parks offer a range of activities off the beaten path, and a handful have adaptive traveler accommodations. And remember to take advantage of AARP member discounts for lodging and more.

Well-prepared travel is responsible travel.

The Mighty 5 Tour of Utah

5 Utah National Parks in 5 Days

OVERVIEW The Mighty Five is fast becoming one of our most popular tours.  Five of the countries most beautiful national parks all located in a small geographical area.  And yet each one is so different from its neighbors.  Born of the Colorado plateau uplift these parks offer some of the unique landscape and rock formations you will find anywhere in the world.  In addition to the National Parks, we also visit two of our states most beautiful and unusual parks.

Areas Visited: Zion NP, Bryce Canyon NP, Capitol Reef NP, Arches NP, Canyonlands NP, Escalante-Grand Staircase National Monument, Goblin Valley State Park, Deadhorse Point State Park, and Salt Lake Cities Mormon Temple Square (Temple Square has more visitors every year than most of the national parks in Utah, combined).

Generally, our groups are small with eight to ten passengers.  We use a comfortable modified van for larger groups and a suburban or similar for groups of 4 or less.

We begin the tour in Las Vegas and end in Salt Lake City. Our guides are the best in the area. They usually are natives of Southern Utah and have a lifetime of stories and insights to draw upon.  There is no substitute for experience. They provide a comprehensive overview of the history, geology, plant life, and culture of the West.

We look forward to touring with you,

The SUST staff, experienced tour specialists

Arrival Day: Las Vegas, and  St George. (The day before your tour begins)

After you arrive in Las Vegas and collect your luggage you will connect with a shuttle which will then transport you to St George, UT for your overnight stay.  Get settled in, enjoy the beauty of the city of St George. We will be getting started first thing in the morning. There will be two shuttle departures times, one at 12 pm PST and the second at 4:00 pm PM PST

Day One: Zion National Park

senior tours utah

Zion – Virgin River

We begin our Mighty 5 tour with first thing in the morning from your hotel in St George UT. Our immediate destination is Zion National Park, a short, 50 min drive away.

Zion National Park is one of nature’s greatest wonders. Gigantic red and white rock monoliths tower around you like a skyscraper city of stone, concealing pockets of abundant flora and fauna. See the Great White Throne, Angel’s Landing, the Court of the Patriarchs, and the Narrows where the Virgin River has carved out a narrow canyon with 2,000-foot cliffs on each side.

There are some great trails to walk, from easy to moderate as we explore some of the key sites in Utah’s most visited national park.

After we are done we make our way to Bryce, UT for our night stay.

(Breakfast And Dinner Included)

Day Two: Bryce Canyon National Park

Sunrise in Bryce is a magical experience. A few minutes before sunrise we will make our way to one of the  most beautiful locations in the park to enjoy the sun break the horizon and light the beautiful landscape of Bryce Canyon.

There is no other place on earth like Bryce Canyon. Made famous for its pink and white uniquely shaped hoodoos, Bryce Canyon is a great place to experience. There are a couple of hiking/walking options to enjoy as well as fantastic viewpoints to discover.

senior tours utah

Bryce Canyon Ampitheater

Later that afternoon, we drive over famous Highway 12, truly one of America’s most scenic highways, and into parts of the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. No other place in the lower 48 is as remote and undiscovered as in this part of Utah. See why “Car and Driver” magazine and others have called Highway 12 one of America’s most beautiful drives.

Lodging and dinner will be in Torrey, Utah.

(Breakfast Included)

Day Three: Capitol Reef National Park

senior tours utah

Capitol Reef – Barn

Capitol Reef is Utah’s least-visited national park so don’t expect large crowds of people.   We have a morning scenic drive in Capitol Reef’s Water Pocket fold.   We visit an ancient Petroglyph panel.  In the fall, seasonal fruit can be picked in the old pioneer orchards, and small pies and ice cream are available in the nearby Gifford House Museum year-round.

In the afternoon, we head for Utah’s most unusual State Park, Goblin Valley. The rock formations here are unique and do have an unearthly and strange look about them. Then, we drive to the John Wesley Powell History Museum in Green River, Utah. John W. Powell had a significant influence on this part of Utah. He and his group were the first to successfully float down the Green and then the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon in 1869. Powell named a number of the rivers and mountain ranges found in the area.

Lodging will be in Moab, Utah, that evening.

Day 4: Arches and Canyonland National Parks

We travel to nearby Arches National Park.  Here your guide will help you to explore some of the most amazing sites in the world.

Mighty 5 Tour in Utah

Turret Arch Through An Arch

The arches of the park are true wonders beyond comparison and will leave you awed and amazed that these stone structures are still standing.  We will take a walk up to the famous Landscape Arch, one of the longest spans of any arch in the world. Additional sites visited include the Windows Section where more than 9 arches are laid out for your view, Balanced Rock, Park Avenue, and the Delicate Arch viewpoint.

After we have finished in Arches we will give you some time to see Moab UT or if the group chooses to see some more of the local sites.

That evening we will have our farewell dinner at one of the local restaurants.

Lodging will again be in Moab, UT.

(Breakfast, Dinner Included)

Day 5: Deadhorse Point, Canyonlands National Park, Prehistoric Museum, and Salt Lake City

senior tours utah

Deadhorse Point

After breakfast, we travel to the Island in the Sky section of Canyonlands National Park and visit a few of the key sites including a walk to Mesa Arch and a stop at Grand Viewpoint. We also visit one of Utah’s most beautiful State Parks, Dead Horse Point. Here, a fantastic view of the canyons of the Colorado River is offered from a towering mesa, hundreds of feet above the canyon.

We begin our journey to Salt lake city making a stop in Green River for lunch, followed by a stop in Price Utah at USU’s Eastern Prehistoric Museum, where we will visit some informative dinosaur and Fremont Indian exhibits. From there, we go directly to Salt Lake City for our final night stay.

Overnight Salt Lake City

Day 6: Depart Salt Lake International Airport

Make your way to the Salt Lake City Airport for your departures home.  The Hotel offers a convenient airport shuttle throughout the day.

The Dwellings Vacation Rentals in Southern Utah

A Senior’s Guide to Visiting Zion National Park

by Wildflower | Dec 3, 2021

If you’re a senior citizen, then you are probably on the lookout for travel destinations that are not too strenuous. Well, if that is what you’re looking for, then Zion National Park in Utah might be just right! This park has some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world and it’s not as difficult to get around as other parks can be. The area is also surrounded with luxurious, accommodating Zion National Park resorts. If you’re a senior citizen looking for a new adventure, check out this Senior’s Guide before your next vacation.

A Peaceful Look Into Nature

One of the best things about Zion National Park is that you can easily find a peaceful location to look out onto nature. There are so many places here where you will be able to see mountains, trees, and rivers without any loud noises or distractions around. A lot of seniors love seeing how quiet this park is because it’s much different from their daily lives. Zion National Park is also close to the city so if you want to go back and visit your family or friends, then it won’t be too difficult for you either!

A Great Way to Get Around

Another thing that makes this park great is how easy it is for seniors to get around. Most of us don’t have the same level of energy we did when we were younger, so it’s good to know that you won’t have to climb up and down rocks or hills just to get around this park. If you want to take a bus tour around the area then simply call one of these companies: Zion Adventure Company, or Zion National Park Jeep Tours. They offer a great service that will get you from point A to point B without any problems.

senior tours utah

A Variety of Trails

Plenty of trails in this park are paved and have a low difficulty rating, so seniors can enjoy the views without having to hike for miles. There is still plenty to see in in this beautiful corner of Utah, as Zion National Park has several different kinds of walks that you’ll be able to do no matter what kind of experience level you’re at. If you’re not sure which trail to go on, then sign up for a guided tour! You’ll meet people who share the same interest as you and your guide will make things easier because all of their favorite trails are pretty much mapped out already.

Tons of Opportunities for Photography

If there’s one thing that gets seniors excited about visiting Zion National Park, it’s the chance to take some amazing pictures. This place is perfect for snapping photos, so if you want to bring your camera with you, then feel free! There are plenty of spots here that will make any picture look like a work of art, and you’ll go home with gorgeous images you can treasure.

You Can Bring Your Pets on Pa’rus Trail

Visitors are welcome to bring their pets on the Pa’rus trail. This is a paved walking path which means you’ll be able to keep your pet close by without you having to worry about chasing them if they run off into the wilderness. There are also pet waste stations available along the trail so you can do your part and clean up after them as well. Your dog will enjoy the peaceful exercise while also being able to see some of the best views in Zion National Park. Because this is the only walking trail open for dogs, your beloved pet can also expect to make some new furry friends along the way!

Safety Tips for Seniors Visiting Zion National Park

  • As you’re walking around, be aware of your surroundings. You don’t want to get too close to the edge because there are some steep cliffs that might cause injury if someone were to fall near them.
  • If you plan on hiking through canyons, then make sure nobody in your group has a heart condition or any other medical condition that can be easily triggered.
  • When you’re going back to your resort after a day of exploring, make sure that someone knows where you are and what time they expect to hear from you again via phone or text message. You also want this person to know which trails you will hike on in advance so if something happens then they can come looking for you as soon as possible.
  • If you plan on taking a guided tour, then make sure that they have all of the proper safety equipment for their guests to use in case anything goes wrong while you’re out there. This is particularly important if your group gets split up. Also, let them know about any health conditions or disabilities, to ensure someone can be prepared to act quickly if anything were to happen.
  • If you plan on driving yourself around the park, then make sure to get up early in order to avoid traffic jams! Although this place is beautiful all year round, there are certain seasons that will have more visitors than others, so if you can time your trip well by visiting during a “low season,” then you’re more likely to avoid long lines and limited parking.
  • If you need medical attention at all during your trip, the Zion Canyon Medical Clinic is nearby that has an urgent care room that’s open twenty-four hours a day. If anything should occur during your trip, there will be somebody who can help you out right away.

A Great Way to Experience Nature

There’s no better way for seniors to experience nature than by visiting Zion National Park. With so much beauty inside this place, it would be a shame not to take the opportunity if you can. If you’re looking for something fun and exciting to do during your next vacation, then simply check out all of the amazing things you can do here. You’ll never forget the memories made on this trip and hopefully, it will be something you want to experience again in the future! For more information on where to stay during your time at Zion National Park, take a look at our  glamping accommodation  options that are perfectly positioned to help seniors enjoy their peaceful getaway.

Travel Documents

Spirit of the Desert: The National Parks of the Southwest begins and ends in the U.S.

Real ID Act - Effective May 7, 2025

Beginning in May 2025, some state IDs will no longer permit you to board a domestic flight. Currently, some states are compliant, some have received extensions, and some are not compliant.  Click here  to see the status of your state. If your state license is not compliant, you can use a passport in lieu of a valid state ID.

Please Note:  The federal government has extended the deadline to May 7, 2025 for domestic airline passengers to secure a Real ID driver's license for use as identification at the airport. Travelers without a verified license or ID card will also have the option of showing other identity documents, such as a passport or military ID to board a plane.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally,   you should contact an embassy or consulate of the U.S. to determine what travel documentation is necessary. You may also log on to the U.S. State Department's Internet site by clicking  here.

If you are traveling by air to join and/or depart from this tour within the U.S ., please read the section entitled Airline Security Measures to determine what travel documentation is required.

If you are a citizen of the U.S. or Canada who travels frequently between the two countries , you may benefit from the NEXUS program, which is a joint initiative between the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency and the Canada Border Services Agency that allows pre-screened and approved travelers faster processing at designated highway lanes in high-volume border crossing locations, at a NEXUS kiosk at several airports, and at certain marine reporting locations in the Great Lakes and Seattle regions. For further information, you may log on to the Nexus Internet website by clicking here . Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

Note: For activities marked with an asterisk (*) in day-by-day descriptions, participation is at your own risk; a signed liability waiver will be required.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.

Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

  • Trip Cancellation –  If you must cancel your tour due to a covered reason, the plan provides coverage for the amount you paid for your travel arrangements. • Medical Expense –  Reimburses covered medical expenses incurred in the event you become injured or sick during your trip.
  • Baggage / Personal Effects Protection –  Provides reimbursement in the event your luggage or personal effects are, lost, stolen, damaged or delayed during your trip.

Worldwide Emergency Assistance Services –  Provided by Carefree Travel Assistance; 24-hour emergency telephone assistance hotline for medical and travel related problems.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your other flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

The moderately active Spirit of the Desert: The National Parks of the Southwest adventure takes place in the mountain heights of the U.S. national parks. To enjoy this trip, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion.

Some of the excursions on this tour are:

  • Two Flightseeing Adventures over the extraordinary remote reaches of Capitol Reef National Park; and witness stunning panoramas on a flight from the Grand Canyon to Las Vegas
  • A mild-to-moderate river rafting trip on the Colorado River

Although the hotels and lodges do have rooms that are handicap accessible, if you are traveling with a wheelchair or portable oxygen, we strongly recommend that you consult with your physician to determine whether this tour is appropriate for you.

Strenuous exercise at high elevations should be avoided.

PLEASE NOTE: We regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs. The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey! You can view the reading list  here .

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website, noaa.gov , by clicking here.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

The weather you will encounter on this journey ranges from hot and dry in Arizona and Nevada to cool and dry at the higher elevations in the national parks. Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing. For the welcome and farewell receptions, casual resort wear is appropriate; formal wear is never required.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription, or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for Spirit of the Desert: The National Parks of the Southwest :

  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Windbreaker for the raft trip
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Telephoto lens
  • Backpack or belt-pack
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

A great tour! One day in each park was just enough to give us a sense of the grandeur of each of them. People taking the tour with us were great, and our guide was very knowledgeable. We were given options so that those who wanted to do things on their own could do so, while those that remained with the group stayed with the guide and learned about the history, geology, etc. This was the first time I took a vacation with a tour group, and I was very glad that I did because I learned more than I would have if I had explored the parks on my own.

Utah Parks Circuit Tour

We did this trip during the government strike in 2013 which meant all the National Parks were closed. Intrepid did a WONDERFUL job mitigating the situation and we still got to go camping and hiking at some select state parks. Luckily, the Grand Canyon was re-opened before our trip ended which was awesome. What a finale! Thank You Intrepid for giving us an awesome itinerary despite the challenges.

Great people , Great time. First meal together in los Vegas was awful. It was slimy Thai with NO VEGETABLES. We had to walk across a four lane highway in Los Vegas! I think a great and inexpensive restaurant is Ping Pang Pong.or what ever. Horrible stay in Bluff behind a gas station. No lobby, no restaurant, and no room to move around. Put suitcases on table. Change stay to town of Bland.

Zion and Bryce Lodge Based Tour

THis was my first trip with Wildland Trekking and I had no idea how challenging the terrain and hikes would be. As it turned out, everything was well within the ability of the five of us in the group. Our guide prepared us each evening for the day ahead so that we could anticipate with pleasure what lay ahead. When the going got tough, Craig encouraged and distracted us! He also prepared delectable lunches on the trail that fueled us for the rest of the day. Craig is a seasoned guide....well informed about flora, fauna, and the geology of the area' and excellent company in general. All in our group were ready to sign up for another lodge based trip after this excellent experience with Wildland Trekking. I was also very impressed with the attention to safety and other details such as good meals and nice accommodations.

Utah's Mighty Five National Parks (10 Days)

This was my first time going on a group tour. I was a little concerned that traveling with a group might be difficult dealing with 32 different personalities. The group was wonderful, we had great camaraderie, everyone was very inclusive. Our tour guide randy was awesome. Extremely knowledgeable and helpful with directing us to the variety of hikes that we could choose. Michael was wonderful and our bus driver Russell was awesome. Overall it was a wonderful experience and would consider doing another group tour.

An amazing 5 days with Justin & Eric of MountainBased. Their knowledge and local skills really made the trip. And their people skills towards the group brought us 13 strangers altogether perfectly. The long drives went by so quickly. The camps were setup in some great areas. Breakfasts, lunches & dinners were awesome and filling each time, with plenty of snacks available too. Getting to see all 5 National Parks and a few State parks too, was truly frickin EPIC!

What people love about utah tours.

the best way to explore the vastness and glory of the Utah desert is by camping and hiking in small groups. I enjoyed this trip immensely, it was challenging enough but not too much. Our guide was a brave and resourceful powerful woman. I am planning my next trip with you already!
Excellent tour of the Mighty 5 in Utah. Our guide Robin was knowledgeable and accommodating throughout the tour. Just enough time was allocated for hiking the trails, viewing the sites in the distance and even visiting the Visitor Centers in each park. Hotel/motel accommodations were good and chosen for access to restaurants. Lunch stops with corresponding places to eat were well planned and the food and service was good. We thoroughly enjoyed our time.
Guide was knowledgeable and helpful. It was a good group

It’s easy to make a reservation for an OVERNIGHT Van or Motorcoach Tour. Simply call us, or fill out our online reservation form. We’ll ask you for a bit of information and a $100 nonrefundable deposit. Wondering why that deposit is nonrefundable? Kindred Tours has made deposits to hotels, vendors, and attractions… sometimes months in advance, and that money is often nonrefundable to us. Your final payment for OVERNIGHT Van or Motorcoach Tours will be due 45 days prior to your departure date . Final payments are nonrefundable . On rare occasions, Kindred Tours may need to cancel a tour prior to departure. If this happens, we’ll notify you as far in advance as possible. You, of course, will receive a full refund for the cost of your tour, or you can transfer your credit to another tour of your choice.

ONE-DAY Van or Motorcoach Tours must be paid for when you make your reservation. Reservations can be made either by phone or online. One-day tours are nonrefundable within 30 days of the tour.

Tips on Tipping

People ask us all the time about tipping. “Should we?” and “How much?” While we at Kindred Tours want to make it clear that we do not require tips, they are certainly appreciated by our tour guides and drivers when the service meets or exceeds your expectations.

As to the amounts, use your own judgment. Recommendations are all over the map. USA Today recommends $3 to $5 per person for half-day trips, $10 for a full-day excursion, and $1  to $2 for a one or two hour tour. On overnight tours, calculate the per-day tip and multiply it by the number of days, and add $1 to $2 per person for loading and unloading bags.

Trip Advisor suggests that most major Tour Operators are suggesting $4 – $5.00 per day per passenger. At this rate you should budget $8 – $10.00 per day if traveling as a couple. The guideline is per person not per couple. Tips to the driver usually fall within the same range.

Again, these are just guidelines and we want to repeat that they are not required. Give a tip if you think one is warranted.

Can I arrange a Kindred Tour for my group?

Absolutely  and there are so many great ways that we can work together.  select a tour from our newsletter or website, and we’ll take care of all the details—providing marketing materials, sending a representative to speak with your group, and collecting payments.  if you need help selecting a tour, give us a call.  and you’re not limited to our current selection of tours.  we’ll work hard to customize or plan a tour specifically for your group.  just give us a call, and we’ll get started., do you have bathrooms on your buses, we get this one a lot  but you needn’t worry about bathroom breaks.  we make a stop for  coffee and doughnuts early into  every tour, usually at a roadside rest-area, and always conveniently located near a restroom.  we make regular pit stops through the day, and our drivers brag that they know every public restroom in the american southwest.  ask any kindred traveler and they’ll say that they all had concerns about bathroom breaks heading into their first tour that were quickly forgotten., how do i know if the activity level is right for me, kindred travelers range in age from 50 to over 100 years old, an enormous span that encompasses a huge range of abilities.  we work hard every day to provide great tours to meet the needs and the interests of our entire group.  if  you are unsure if a tour is right for you, we invite you to call the office  to discuss your concerns.  we’re happy to provide you with more detail about a tour and answer your questions.  we’ll work with you to find your perfect tour., can i pay a single supplement, if you really feel that you’d like to have your own hotel room, consider paying a single supplement.  a single supplement is just the additional 50% on the hotel room expense that you would have shared with a roommate., can you find me a roommate, we get asked this question a lot, and the answer is always yes  don’t let the fact that you are single keep you from signing up for a tour.  the majority of people who travel with kindred tours are single.  they sign up for a tour, we assign them a roommate, and they often go on to become lifelong friends.  we have decades of success matching roommates., how do i pay for my tour, use your credit card when you sign-up online, or when you call the office to make a reservation.  we do not keep your card credit information on file.  you can also sign up for a tour, receive confirmation of your reservation from the office, and then pop a check into the mail.  most reservations for extended tours require a $100 deposit, with the balance to be paid closer to the date of the tour., what if the trip is full, we’ll always encourage you to use the wait list  when a trip fills, and it can happen very quickly, we begin a wait list. if there’s enough participation to fill a second bus, we’ll let you know.  we’ll also check with our wait list, should we have any cancellations, fielding those requests in the order in which they were received., how do i sign up for a tour, check out online for one-stop shopping, or call the office to make a reservation.  you may reach our voicemail, after all we are in the travel business, but leave us a message and we’ll always call you back to confirm.  , where do i meet the van, mesa: mesa doubletree hotel 1011 w . holmes ave mesa, az 85210.
