Slush Puppies: Couple offers tour of the Sierras led by sled dogs

sierra husky tours

For many kids who grew up in the 1990s, the animated film “Balto,” made quite the impact. The film follows a half-wolf, half-husky on his journey of leading a sled team pulling a treatment for diphtheria across Alaska.

While most kids who watched the film had dreams about owning a brave mutt that would pull them across a snowy landscape, Alyssa Martin made that dream a reality.

Martin, who grew up in Truckee, used to watch shows on PBS about Alaskan sled dogs.

“I think I was about three years old when I told my mom I was going to miss her when I moved to Alaska with my dog,” Martin said. “I didn’t realize you could just do that in California.”

Shortly after watching “Balto”, Martin started her first “team,” which consisted of her little brother and their Labrador being attached with jump ropes and leading her.

She bought an actual harness from a local dog store and started doing research on training. When she was ten, her grandparents bought her a sled and by 12, she was running dogs.

Martin’s partner, Rohn Buser grew up with sled dogs in Alaska. Now, they own 13 dogs and run the company Sierra Husky Tours.

They describe Sierra Husky Tours as, “a group of happy huskies who love sharing their adventure.”

sierra husky tours

Each winter, Martin, Buser and the 13 dogs, lead two hours tours around Lake Davis near Portola, Calif.

“It’s just so quiet and beautiful,” Martin said about why she likes leading the tours. “You can go out on a snowmobile but it’s loud and you’re moving too fast to really see anything and that’s why I love dog mushing.”

“I don’t think there is anything better than going out in the snow behind a team of dogs,” Martin added. “It’s so peaceful and it’s so much fun to watch them do what they love to do.”

According to Outdoor Dog World, people have been dog sledding since about 2000 B.C. Mainly, Inuit and native peoples from northern regions such as current day Canada, Greenland and Siberia have been using sled dogs to transport food and supplies.

sierra husky tours

The first dog sled race was in 1850 from Winnipeg, Manitoba, to St. Paul, Minnesota. One of the most famous dog sled races, the Iditarod, travels 975 miles from Anchorage to Nome. The Iditarod trail was frequently used from transport during World War I and II, but is most famous for being the route lead dog Balto and lead dog Togo took to bring the diphtheria serum to Nome.

A team consists of a lead dog or dogs (there can be two lead dogs at a time) which are in front, team dogs in the middle and wheel dogs that are directly in front of the sled which help pull the sled out from and around corners or trees.

sierra husky tours

Martin and Buser’s dogs consist of lead dogs Porsche, Fiddler, Inca, and Ruger, team dogs Strider, Punzel, Zelda, Kybur, Lobo, Bolt, and Aleu and wheel dogs Finnick and Diesel.

Malamute and huskies are the traditional sled dogs. Malamutes are bigger and stronger so they are usually used to pull heavier loads over long distances.

Siberian huskies are long distance runners but Martin describes them as “free-thinkers,” while Alaskan huskies are a little smaller and more willing to please their owners. Both breeds have a thick, double coat which keeps them plenty warm in the snow.

Martin and Buser have a combination of Siberian and Alaskan huskies

Martin said they don’t always run all of the dogs at once; it depends on the weather and snow conditions.

sierra husky tours

“You know how we get the Sierra cement, so if the snow is really sticky, we will take out 12,” Martin. “If it’s more icy, if the snow is firmer, the sled glides over it easier.”

She also said it depends on the weight of the load on the sled. She’s smaller than Buser so if it’s just her and one other person, they don’t need as many dogs. The sleds can accommodate a total family weight limit of 400 pounds.

Martin and Buser have a doubler driver sled, which allows one of the guests to stand at the handlebars to give them a more authentic experience. In front of the drivers is the basket, which holds the other adult and two kids.

The tours run for two hours. It starts with the guests getting to meet and pet the dogs while Martin and Buser explain the sled. They have several different trails around the lake they can take and if they are really lucky, they can go over the lake.

sierra husky tours

They also only run one tour a day so as to not tire out the dogs.

Even when there isn’t snow on the ground, the dogs are getting plenty of exercise. Martin and Buser regularly take the dogs out paddle boarding and running. They will practice making turns and listening to commands while attached to the harness even when there isn’t snow.

While Sierra Husky Tours is fun for Martin to run, she said these dogs are first and foremost their pets.

“They are all family dogs.”

On the husky express: Tahoe company preparing for mushing’s return to region in March

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Owners of Husky Express Dog Sled Tours Dotty Dennis and David Beck harnessed their team Friday as they prepared to take a client on a Hope Valley tour. The dogs howled and shook with anticipation.

“He’s not cold, he’s just excited,” Beck said as he pointed to a trembling brown and white husky.

“They’re natural pullers and they’re very smart. It’s not like working with horses,” he said.

Neither the dogs nor their mushers are strangers to competition. Reebok – the white Siberian husky who lead Friday’s tour – once raced the Iditarod, a 993-mile dog sled competition in which mushers and their teams travel from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska.

Dennis, who’s raced throughout the country, got her own taste of the famous Alaskan sled dog competition in 1978 when she worked as the handler for Susan Butcher, the second woman ever to win the grueling event.

“When you’re helping with the handling you get to be on the inside of the big race. I know all the dirty secrets, and I’m not telling,” Dennis said.

She started running dogs with wheel carts in Las Vegas before moving closer to the mountains in 1992. She launched Husky Express Dog Sled Tours with her partner, Beck, that same year. It’s a good way for people to see the huskies doing what they’re born to do, she said.

Dennis and her dogs compete throughout the winter, but this year will be the first time in 15 years that she’ll head to Truckee for a dog sled race. The event is the revival of a sport that all but disappeared from the region for almost two decades until one musher decided to bring it back.

Dog sledding and racing has a long history in and around Lake Tahoe. The sport developed in California during the Truckee winter carnivals in the late 1890s, according to Tahoe historian and author Mark McLaughlin.

Early mushers would harness motley groups of dogs to the ganglines, creating a culture of dog sled derbies around Tahoe’s North Shore. Dog drivers from Montana to Alaska migrated to Truckee to compete in the races that soon became national events, McLaughlin said.

When airplanes began replacing the Pony Express as the country’s main method of mail transit in the 1920s, dog sledding proved its merit as more than just a diversion.

“These planes would frequently go down, and they would use dog sleds to rescue the people. These dog sleds were much more universal than just competition. …The dog sleds were part and parcel of this sense of winter country,” McLaughlin said.

After World War II, much of the energy around mushing died down, according to McLauglin, and it wasn’t until 1979 that dog sled racing returned to the region. The competitions continued for almost two decades, but poor snow eventually brought the races to an end in 1997.

Sierra Nevada Dog Drivers Vice President Preston Springston remembers competing in that last Truckee dog sled race. That experience helped convince Springston to pack up his Southern California home and move to Truckee in 2008 where he now runs Seawolf Racing Sled Dogs kennel.

Last year, Springston decided to bring dog sled racing back to Tahoe. The event would be called the Jack London Commemorative Sierra Sled Dog Derby in honor of London’s connection to a 1915 Truckee race that Springston claims was the first dog sled competition in the lower 48 states.

“It’s really great to have it come back because it’s part of the history of the region. Sled dogs were so important in the late 1800s and early 1900s. I hated not to have a race,” he said.

Springston’s 10 dogs have already run about 300 miles this winter in preparation for the event set to take place March 2-3 at Sugar Bowl Resort.

Dennis said she will compete in the event, along with her 7-year-old grandson and his two dogs. it could be the last hurrah for the musher who says she plans to hang up the harness at the end of season.

“We’re going to retire. We’re old, like the dogs. … It’s a lot of work, but we really like what we do. It’s a lot of fun and people are so appreciative,” Dennis said.

alt

After a brief orientation and safety talk, riders can follow the tour guide deep into the backcountry. The views are absolutely spectacular! Watch in awe as you pass by historic cabins while following the rim of Charity Canyon.

Dog Sledding in Scandinavia

Snow and endless wilderness is probably what most people associate with Scandinavia. A dog sled ride over wide plains, frozen lakes and rivers is an unparalleled experience during your winter holidays. We offer sled dog holidays in Sweden, Finland and Norway. In the Husky Tours Scandinavia section, you will also find activities that are suitable for families with children. These are marked as “light”. For the overnight stays, hotels or comfortable log cabins are available. In addition to the husky tours, other available activities are snowmobile rides, snowshoe hikes, cross-country skiing and reindeer encounters. If you are physically fitter, you can book a husky tour marked as “normal”. These trips include daily dog sledding tours that are longer and more demanding. Experienced sled dog guides teach you how to ride a sled and. You will also receive the most important equipment that you will need. In addition to these offers, it is also possible to try other winter sports, such as ice fishing. For those who already have experience with dog sledding, there are more demanding and challenging tours for you to participate in. Thus, in Scandinavia, everyone will find their ideal husky trip tailored to their personal preferences and fitness level.

Dog sledding through Lapland

Lapland is generally defined as the part of Scandinavia which lies north of the Arctic Circle. The area covers multiple countries including Norway, Finland, Sweden and Russia. This part of the world is sparsely populated, with a population density of approximately just two people per square kilometre. In the east, the land is flat. But in the west, you will find hilly landscapes. In the area around the border between Norway and Sweden, the landscape rises notably. In the region that is called “Scandinavian Mountains”, you can find mountains that are up to 2,000 metres high. You will also find numerous national parks and nature reserves, which span across the borders of several countries. Together, they form one of the largest protected natural areas in Europe – the ideal playground for dog sledding Lapland tours. With this environmentally friendly mode of transport, we can drive to the furthest corners of the national parks and leave nothing but pawprints behind. For this overwhelming experience in nature, you should have a medium fitness level. If you already have experience in driving husky sleds, you can also participate in more demanding tours with longer trips. For beginners, a Husky taster weekend is usually perfect as it does not require a high level of physical fitness. This way, you can gain your first experiences with sled dogs and the technique of dog sledging. These introductory tours are also suitable for families with children and you will have the same opportunity to experience the great nature of Lapland as with all our tours.

Here, you will also get the chance to meet reindeer herders or visit a local village of the Sami people. You will learn a lot about the capable sled dogs as well as the technique of dog sledding from the experienced guides who accompany the tours. That way, you will learn how to drive your own husky team in no time. For these kind of tours, a good fitness level, the ability to concentrate and have fun with the handling of the dogs are necessary requirements. If you still have problems with the sledge or dogs, you can always ride with one of the guides. In the magnificent nature of Norway, you will glide through snowy forests, along icy marshlands and over frozen lakes. If you are lucky, you might even encounter moose and reindeer on the way.

Dog sled tours through Finland

Depending on the season, you will have the chance to see the Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, on our husky tours through Finland. In addition to the sled tours, you also have the opportunity to try cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and even a ride on a reindeer sled. Husky holiday in Sweden

There are 28 national parks throughout Sweden, so you can discover a lot of untouched nature. Here, you may even find moose, wolves, bears and reindeer roaming the wilderness around you. On a dog sled, you will glide effortlessly through the white splendour, leaving the nature just as unspoilt as you found it. Whether you just want to spend a weekend here or book an eight-day expedition, there is a tour to suit every taste and ability. If you are interested in dog sledding and dog training, you can also book a stay on a husky farm and actively participate in the training of the animals. If you want to learn how to ride a dog sledge, then you have the opportunity to spend a dog sled weekend to do just that. In small groups you can learn everything worth knowing about dog sledding, driving techniques and the dogs. Those who already have experience in handling dog sledges and are accordingly fit, an expedition tour offers exactly the right thing for you. For experienced dog sled guides, the tours through the national park are a wonderful adventure.

Husky Expeditions through Alaska

The dog sledge was once the only means of transport in Alaska. Even today, there are still areas that are accessible only by sledge. Those who want to enjoy undisturbed nature far from civilisation should take a tour with the dog sledge. Huskies are friendly, joyful animals that enjoy being in a pack. They also do not mind the cold and pulling the sledges. On the contrary, running in packs is a lot of fun for the dogs. You have never driven a dog sledge? That does not have to be an obstacle. If you have at least an average fitness level and you like dogs, you will learn how to use the sledge quickly. The necessary equipment for you and the dogs will be put at your disposal. So you can easily enjoy the endless expanse of Alaska, the alternation between valleys, mountains and glaciers. For beginners, we offer trips on which you first learn how to handle the huskies and the sledge in order to independently lead a dog sled in Alaska later on. These tours are also suitable for young people from the age of 14 – provided that a parent or legal guardian is with them. Due to the small size of the groups, experienced guides can respond individually to every guest’s needs. We also have attractive trips for experienced dog sled guides, during which you can stay in the wilderness and are responsible for your dog team from start to finish. For sporty dog lovers, this is a truly unique experience.

Dog sledding in Yukon

The Yukon Territory in north-western Canada owes its name to the Yukon River. This area is associated with trappers, gold miners and adventurers. Again, the region is sparsely populated with approximately just 0.06 inhabitants per square mile. However, wolves, bears and moose fare very well there. Most people live around Whitehorse – the capital of the territory. Since in former times the dog sledge was the only means of transport in the winter, sled dog breeding has a long tradition in this part of the world. Malamutes and huskies are tough and can pull fully loaded sledges through rough terrain – even in extreme weather conditions. Our sled dog tours in Yukon are aimed at adults over the age of 18 who have at least a normal fitness level. Experience with the dog sledge is not required. The trips are designed in a way that you first have the opportunity to get to know the dogs and then familiarise yourself with the driving technique. Afterwards, you can go on longer and more demanding tours. During these camp-to-camp tours, you will spend a few nights in the wilderness. Whether you choose a shorter or longer trip, you will certainly have a unique holiday experience.

Husky expeditions in Greenland

A dog sledding tour in Greenland is just the thing for adventurers over the age of 18, who do not care about comfort. On the Greenland tours you will drive over sea ice and frozen fjords. Winter tents are available for the overnight stays. The sledges used in Greenland and the type of harnessing of the dogs differ from the usual forms. So there are sleds in different sizes and shapes, depending on the purpose. The dogs are not stretched as a pair in a line, but fan-shaped in front of the sledge. Even the dogs themselves are a different breed than those used in Scandinavia or America. The Greenland Husky is more spirited and less peaceful. So these trips also offer experienced dog sled guides an interesting new challenge. But even those who have no experience with dog sleds can safely go on such a journey. The experienced guides will provide you with everything you need during the first days of the trip. On a husky tour in Greenland, the exact itinerary may depend on the weather, but you will definitely experience a unique landscape and visit small settlements in Greenland. Even the overnight stay in a camp in the wilderness is a unique experience. And with a little luck, you can also observe the Northern Lights.

Around the World in Analogue: Life in the Green City, Zelenograd

Back in 1958, Zelenograd was a new town formed and planned by the Soviet Union, specialized to become the central hub of electronics, microelectronics and the computer industry, and it has become as such to this very day for Russia. Dubbed as the "Green City" in reference to the city's color and the symbolic animal, the squirrel, Zelenograd offers much more as it provides wide, open spaces where modernity and nature meet. Through the photographs of Lomographer Igor Silaev a.k.a. mahoney66 , we see a gorgeous glimpse of his life in the okrug in harmonious colors.

sierra husky tours

I think 2020 was very hard for everyone. There are various restrictions in the country. Due to some restrictions, I even had to change jobs. But it was only good because I had more free time. Thanks to this, I returned to photography!

I live in Zelenograd (Autonomous district of Moscow). Unlike the center of Moscow, it is more calm and measured, and there are a lot of trees in our city (Zelenograd literally translates as green city ). Thanks to this, you can feel a certain connection with nature here, as if you are in the village. But at the same time, some areas look like a metropolis. There is also a very unusual architecture in the style of post-Soviet modernism, it is very inspiring. That's probably why I love this city.

sierra husky tours

First of all, I love my view from the window, because there are unreal sunsets. There are also many parks and alleys in the city, and in my opinion, they are much more picturesque than parks in the center of Moscow and not so mainstream. I would recommend Victory Park (not to be confused with the Park of the same name in Moscow) and the arboretum. From the Central parks, I would recommend VDNH, there is something to see and shoot.

Next to my house there is a Tanuki restaurant, where they prepare delicious Asian food. And from the bars I would recommend Hops & Coffee, it is located next to the train station. There are many varieties of author's beer and damn fine coffee!... and hot! If we talk about the center, then be sure to visit the cafe PEOPLE as PEOPLE -- this is a pleasant place where you can eat delicious and inexpensive food.

sierra husky tours

I Advise you to come to Moscow in the middle of summer, at this time there are the most comfortable weather conditions and you can walk all day long. Visit as many attractions and parks as possible, take a ride in the Moscow metro and take as much film with you as possible because here it is much more expensive! If you still need a film, then I recommend Perspektivalab . They have a good selection of films and the price is reasonable.

I like to think about the first time I went to Sokolniki Park with my girlfriend. That day, I was terribly stung by my new sneakers, but even that didn't spoil this beautiful day. We walked all day and took a lot of pictures. If you are in Moscow, be sure to go to Sokolniki Park!
