Tour the Simple Life of the Amish

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. — Lawrence County and Lancaster County are on opposite sides of Pennsylvania.

Their respective Amish communities are even further apart in their adherence to the old ways.

The Lawrence County Amish community, centered around New Wilmington, Pa., is among the strictest in the nation when it comes to maintaining the simple life. Its members are friendly but they do not embrace tourism as they do in Lancaster County. They also make very few exceptions to their prohibition of modern technology.

Their uncompromised ways make the Lawrence County Amish among the most fascinating of the sect in North America.

For Susan Hougelman, it’s a big reason why her business, Simple Life Tours , has become so successful in such a short period of time.

Hougelman started Simple Life in 2014 as a part-time endeavor, occasionally shuttling visitors around the back roads outside New Wilmington. Her business grew rapidly. In 2019, she took 2,000 people on tours of the Lawrence County Amish.

“It became a full-time business last year,” she says. “Even more than full-time.”

She has two vehicles – a 15-seat mini-bus and an SUV – to accommodate tours of all sizes. As testament to the enduring fascination with the Amish, Hougelman says her clients have come from 150 countries and all 50 states.

“We’ve had every kind of nationality and every single one, old or young, Muslim or Christian, all have respect for the Amish,” Hougelman says. “They fall in love with their lifestyle. Some end up crying because they are so touched. The Amish live such a godly lifestyle, clean and earthly and beautiful.”

The tour, she says, brings people together. Hougelman recalls a couple from the Netherlands who took the tour three years ago. “He was profoundly touched,” she says, adding she continues to receive letters from him.

simple life tour

The Lawrence County Amish community’s isolation and separatism protects it from modern ways.

“This area is untapped and not touristy. So we get to see the real Amish life from right outside their homes,” Hougelman says. “I tell people that Lancaster is a whole different kind of Amish. They have restaurants and businesses [for the public]. The Amish [in Lawrence County] are not allowed to even own a restaurant or work in one. You get the real thing here.”

The 2,200-member Lawrence County Amish community is the second-strictest in the United States, she says, behind only the Schwartzentruber Amish in Holmes County, Ohio. They do not use electricity; fuel-burning lamps are used for light. They also do not have bathroom plumbing, using outhouses that are attached to their homes in most cases.

Hougelman and her husband, Joe, owned the landmark Tavern on the Square restaurant in New Wilmington until she sold it two years ago. The restaurant is a popular stop for tourists who used to ask her daily where they could find the Amish.

“I lived here all my life and had never talked to the Amish, but customers would ask about them every day,” she says. “I would tell them to just drive around. But I saw a need that needed to be filled. One day I said, ‘Get in my car and I will take you around.’ ”

That was the unofficial beginning of her tourism business. Hougelman studied up on the Amish and began to make contacts.

“I have a friend who sells grass-fed beef and she had a lot of Amish clients,” she says. “She took me around to meet all the Amish businesses, which I never knew existed, and they were so nice.”

simple life tour

She put a script together and has selected a few Amish businesses for stops on her tours. Her guests browse the small shops and get a personal interaction.

“I stop at Amish grocery stores, a quilt shop, a furniture maker,” she says.

“I tell [my tour clients], ‘You could go to Lancaster or Holmes County to buy Amish furniture but most of it was made here in Lawrence County,” she says. “I bring people to watch them making it and they can buy it there at a wholesale price.”

Hougelman said the Lawrence County Amish don’t realize how different their lives are from the average American’s. They are industrious but have little contact with the outside world.

Guests from abroad who want to see the Amish usually find Hougelman’s Simple Life Tours on the internet and book tours six to nine months in advance.

“They come here and go to New York and Boston and Niagara Falls. We are in the middle of that,” she says. “They want the untapped place, not the touristy place.”

Simple Life Tours also gets a lot of clients from tour bus daytrips, lifelong learning programs, high schools and colleges, and anyone who wants to learn about Amish culture.

The outgoing Hougelman says Simple Life is the only Amish tour company in western Pennsylvania. As a tour guide, she shares a wealth of information that goes beyond history and data.

Hougelman has an obvious relationship with the Amish families and their children and knows them by name. She can briefly converse with them in Pennsylvania Dutch, the hybrid German-English language that only they speak.

On a tour in early June, Jan Hvizdos of Murrysville, Pa., and her friend, Beverly Maloberti of Greensburg, Pa., rode in Hougelman’s SUV for a couple of hours down the narrow byways of picturesque Lawrence County. The two friends have a long appreciation for the Amish and have visited communities in Lancaster County and Florida.

Hvizdos was pleased with the tour. “I saw an ad for it on Facebook and thought that it sounded like it’s grass-roots ,” she says.

“You visit farms and go to their stores. And it’s one on one. You can read every book in the world about the Amish but you won’t get the hands-on approach that this tour has.”

Maloberti echoed those sentiments. “Jan and I love the Amish lifestyle and [Hougelman] has shown us different aspects of their lives, like making furniture.”

After seeing firsthand the peaceful, reverent and slow-paced lifestyle of the Amish, Hvizdos repeated a phrase that Hougelman had spoken earlier: “They are in this world, but not of this world.”

One of the stops on The Simple Life tour is a shop where three Amish men were making beautiful rocking chairs by hand.

simple life tour

Just down the country lane is Byler’s Grocery Store, on the ground level of a large Amish family farmhouse. One of the children working there, a boy of about 13, proudly showed visitors his collection of coins visitors from around the world had given him.

One omnipresent sign of the outside world noticeably absent in Amish country are facemasks to thwart the spread of coronavirus. Nobody wears one, because the disease has not touched the isolated Amish community.

The government-ordered shutdown did force Hougelman to close her business in March. She was permitted to resume this month and the reservations are now starting to come in.

“Normally I would have given over 200 tours by this time,” she says. “I’ve had three so far. But they are definitely starting to come back. I’m hoping by fall it will be busy again.”

easy life have announced their 2023 North American headlining tour, which starts in Mexico City on April 20. The British five-piece will be making stops across country and will conclude in New York City on May 9.

The band will hit acclaimed venues like the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles, CA, Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco, CA, and the Gothic Theatre in Denver, CO, before wrapping things up at Elsewhere in Brooklyn.

Last week, easy life shared their brand new single “ANTIFREEZE,” which is available now on Geffen Records and arrived with an official music video.

57 Mother’s Day Songs: A Playlist Of Classic Songs About Moms

Steve albini: a tribute to an authentic visionary.

A collaboration with Gus Dapperton, “ANTIFREEZE” received its first play as Radio 1’s Hottest Record In The World and previews the British band’s much-anticipated second album, MAYBE IN ANOTHER LIFE… , which is set to arrive on October 7.

The band started to tease the new album earlier this year with first single “BEESWAX,” followed by the anthemic “DEAR MISS HOLLOWAY” (which features Kevin Abstract, who joined the group on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury), and their summer single “OTT” alongside New Zealand pop star BENEE .

Having first toured together back in 2018, “ANTIFREEZE” was written during lockdown by easy life front-man Murray and US indie pop prince Gus Dapperton. “ANTIFREEZE” arrives alongside a trippy video shot in New York during easy life’s sold out US tour, expanding the colorful visual world of MAYBE IN ANOTHER LIFE… ahead of its release next month.

In 2022, easy life–an escapist band, formed on the hedonistic outlook of “no regrets”–appear compelled to put their ethos to the test. Melancholic, uplifting, and hugely sophisticated, MAYBE IN ANOTHER LIFE… is a record about how our choices define us, for better and worse, and chronicles how to make peace with things we can’t control. Throughout, Murray’s world-class production absorbs influences ranging from the manic hip-hop energy of Odd Future to a colorful visual palette, as inspired by classic Disney animation as it is the dreamlike art noveau of Wes Anderson.

Simple Life Tours - Amish Tours - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024)

Playing on the PGA Tour is a big deal. But life on tour isn't always easy

E AST LOTHIAN, Scotland — News flash: Golf at the highest level is difficult. News flash (2): But even difficult golf can be fun. And both were on display during press conferences that formed part of the media day for July’s Genesis Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club.

On the dark side of life on tour was Bob MacIntyre. Still relatively fresh from a European Ryder Cup debut and gaining his PGA Tour card through his stellar play on the DP World Tour in 2023, the Scot has found life in the New World to be so very different and a lot more stressful. In 12 PGA Tour starts this season, the 27-year-old from the remote Highland town of Oban has missed six cuts and recorded only two top-10s, one of those alongside Thomas Detry in the recent Zurich Classic of New Orleans. The big issue seems to have been chipping and putting on grasses he has only rarely seen before.

“If you've got a straightforward chip out here into a strong grain it changes the way you've got to play the shot,” he said. “I changed my technique slightly to try and help myself and give myself a bigger margin for error. But even on basic chips that I would be fancy to chip in, I'm thinking, ‘right, do I get the putter on this, just kind of damage limitation kind of stuff?’ When it goes wrong, it [the ball] only goes a yard in front of you. Then you've got a six-foot putt with the grain going the opposite way from the break; how do you read that?”

Much more upbeat was Tom Kim, whose two appearances in the Scottish Open have so far produced a third-place finish and a tie for sixth. It’s safe to say the 21-year-old South Korean is a fan of seaside golf, even if it is a little bit of a stretch to describe the Tom Doak-designed Renaissance as a traditional “links.”

Still, working from the bottom up, it is hard to imagine a more downbeat 20 minutes or so than those in which MacIntyre detailed how he has struggled with life far from home, both on and off the course in 2024. Even a three-week return to the friends and family comforts offered by his hometown (population 8,500) gave his overall mood only a temporary boost.

“When you're on the European DP World Tour, it's very friendly,” said the Scot, who emerged unbeaten from the three matches he played in his Ryder Cup debut. “Everyone is together. We're all traveling the world. If we're struggling with certain things, we speak to folk around us. Everything is very familiar. You come out here to the PGA Tour, and it's also so unfamiliar. There's less chatting. There's less dinners. There's just less of that big family feel that you get on the European Tour. If you're sitting on your own, guys will come and join you. Out here [MacIntyre is in South Carolina for this week’s Myrtle Beach Classic], because you don't know many folk … you don't know them in that same kind of depth … they don't come to sit with you. So it does become a lonely place.

“It is what it is,” he continued. “You've got to get on with it. But there are a lot of other things. New golf courses. In Europe, I've played the majority of them now. Over here, they are pretty much all new. Then you've got the different grasses. Having not been brought up playing a lot of Bermuda, grainy grass, pitching and putting is just completely different. I can't just jump home and see the family and get that kind of vibe, being chilled out. But again, it's part of the journey, and I've just got to get on with it.”

Lightening the mood more than a bit, Kim was quick to express his enthusiasm for all things Scottish and, in particular, the Renaissance Club.

“Whenever I go there, I always seem to really enjoy the way we play golf,” he said, from Quail Hollow, where this week he is competing in the Wells Fargo Championship. “It's just very, very different. You have to pick one shot. You have to commit to it. That's the biggest thing I've realized at links golf. You just have to commit, and you have to be able to take some bunkers out of play. In the U.S., there's some shots where you're … I think I can push this. I think I can try to take on this bunker. But over there, you just can't. You have to take a club that you cannot go in the bunker because bunkers are definitely red hazards. For some reason every time I go there, I can just picture a lot of good things. I have a lot of good vibes over there. I just seem to enjoy myself.”

Still, for all that his current mental game contrasts almost completely with that of MacIntyre, Kim was understanding of his fellow pro’s present predicament.

“I do think it is harder to adapt from Scotland to the U.S. because in Scotland there's not much grain,” said the three-time PGA Tour winner. “At home you don't have shots where when you hit, your club gets stuck in the ground. And when you're reading putts, there's not much grain at all. Then, when you come to the U.S., there's so many different grasses. You've got bent. You've got ryegrass. You've got Bermuda. You've got zoysia. There's four different type of grasses, even more. When you're adapting to that instead of just one grass, it definitely is harder.

“The lifestyle here on the PGA Tour, is all business,” continued Kim, confirming MacIntyre’s analysis. “When I played on the Asian Tour or DP World Tour, there was a lot of camaraderie. People go out to dinner and stuff like that. But here, you have your own team. You're trying to compete out here. When I first came, I definitely saw a different type of golf. That’s what makes these guys so good because they are all so dedicated and focused to their craft. So I do really think that guys from the DP World Tour might play great there, but it is hard to adapt coming from there to the PGA Tour.”

'The Simple Life': Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie may be returning to reality TV

simple life tour

Things may not be as simple as they used to be, but Nicole Richie and Paris Hilton may be ready to take another swing at reality TV.

Seventeen years after "The Simple Life," Richie and Hilton's iconic 2000s reality TV show, the two friends announced their return to a TV screen near you in a nostalgic teaser video on Instagram .

"New Era. Same Besties. 👯‍♀️ Coming soon to Peacock," Hilton captioned the video, in a post collaboration with the streamer. In it, Richie and Hilton can be heard singing their memorable " sanasa " bit.

On Wednesday, Richie posted a collage of photos of the long-time friends, from their childhood, teen years and young adulthood.

"From Day 1: Sill and Bill" Richie captioned the post. "Sanasaaaa 💖💖💖" Hilton commented.

"The Simple Life" ran for five seasons from 2003 to 2007 on Fox and later E! network. The series followed the childhood friends and socialites as they ventured to rural America and worked odd jobs, including as waitresses and farmers.

Though the pair have had public falling outs, they've remained close in recent years. Their lives have also changed significantly, as both are now married with children. Hilton is married to venture capitalist Carter Reum and the pair share two young children: London and Phoenix . Richie is married to Good Charlotte frontman Joel Madden, and they share two children: Sparrow and Harlow .

In November, Hilton told Andy Cohen on " Watch What Happens Live " that she and Richie had "surprises in store" in regards to the 20th anniversary of the show's premiere.

The duo have remained active in reality TV. Richie most recently starred in the Quibi reality series "Nikki Fre$h" in 2020 and Amazon Prime Video's "Making the Cut" from 2020 to 2022. Hilton hosted the short-lived Netflix cooking reality show "Cooking with Paris" in 2021 and has starred in "Paris in Love" on Peacock since 2021.

Paris hilton & nicole richie reuniting for new reality tv show, paris hilton & nicole richie teaming up again for a new show ... already greenlit.

Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie are getting ready to be reality TV stars all over again -- 'cause the 2000s darlings are teaming up anew to run it back ... but for a whole new project.

Production sources tell TMZ ... Paris and Nicole are both on board for a new series that they'll both star in, but we're told this ain't gonna be an exact duplicate of "The Simple Life," per se -- their famous show from back in the day that pretty much put them on the map.

Waiting for your permission to load the Instagram Media.

Instead ... our sources tell us this is going to be something with a brand new name -- and while we don't have a sense of the premise just yet ... you can bet it'll be hilarious.

We're being told the project has been talked about among themselves for months -- with Paris and Nicole kicking around ideas on how to do something together again on the small screen. Now, it sounds like they've got their big idea, and they've already sold it to a streamer.

Our sources say it's still very early in development -- and that nothing's been shot yet -- but we know PH and NR are both set to star and be the face of whatever this is.

We're also told there was LOTS of interest from production companies/distributors -- and our sources say an all-out bidding war ensued. We don't where exactly it landed, but our sources do say that James Corden 's production company, Fulwell 73, nabbed the rights to shoot it.

Even though this might not be a pure continuation of 'Simple Life' -- ya gotta imagine fans of the original show are rejoicing ... as 'TSL' is still one of the most beloved reality series of all time.

Funny enough, you could argue their fan base might've seen this news coming ... as both PN and NR seemingly telegraphed Wednesday something was in the works, as they both posted the same collage full of throwback photos of themselves.

They were definitely leaning into nostalgia with their respective posts ... and they got their followers buzzing with excitement. Now, those same people are probably over the moon.

The first "The Simple Life" ran from 2003-2007 for a total of 5 seasons, and got aired between FOX and E! For this new show, we're told an official announcement is forthcoming.
