Here are some of the best cruises for solo travelers at any age.

Traveling the world without having to pack and unpack multiple times is ideal. And on a cruise, that's a reality as you head from destination to destination on what is basically a moving luxury hotel (or a floating city, in some cases ).

Being able to sleep in Bratislava and wake up in Budapest in five-star-worthy accommodations without having to drag all your stuff with you is as convenient as it is luxurious. But cruises aren't just for couples or families — they're great for singles as well.

Colleen McDaniel, the editor-in-chief of Cruise Critic , tells Travel + Leisure that cruises are a great place to meet new people. Some ships have single cabins, host parties for single passengers, or even waive the single supplement fee ( river cruises tend to do that most often).

For example, Norwegian Cruise Line offers studio cabins for single travelers that include access to an exclusive lounge with complimentary espresso and snacks. "One of the benefits of sailing as a single is cruises are generally social. That's how they're designed," McDaniel says. "If you're somebody who's comfortable traveling by themselves and looks to make friends on vacation, there's no shortage of people you're going to meet."

But while younger travelers might want to hop around Europe and party every night, someone in their 50s may be interested in a longer cruise with opportunities for cultural immersion. Whatever your travel style, here are the best cruises for singles of any age.

Cruises for Singles in Their 20s

Cruises that last three to five nights are great for singles in their 20s, in part because they're less expensive, McDaniel says. If you do end up having to pay for a single supplement, "it's a little bit less of a hit to your wallet."

New cruise line Virgin Voyages offers exciting journeys aboard their ultra-Instagrammable ship, Scarlet Lady . The four-night Fire and Sunset Soirees cruise from Miami is ideal for travelers in their 20s or 30s looking for a healthy mix of party and wellness. All cruisers must be fully vaccinated and test negative for COVID-19 upon boarding.

Another great option is a three-day cruise to the Bahamas from Miami on Norwegian Sky . The ship was refurbished in 2019 and offers 10 dining options, a full-service Starbucks, and a casino for late-night bonding around the blackjack table with your new shipmates. Proof of COVID-19 vaccination is required upon boarding for guests ages 12 and up.

Cruises for Singles in Their 30s

According to McDaniel, cruisers in their 30s are likely looking for a good mix of "bustling nightlife and engaging in classes, but they also really want to explore and experience culture." She says river cruises that offer things like silent discos and paint-and-wine classes appeal to this age group.

The eight-day Vienna Vibe cruise from U by Uniworld is a great option (note the cruise line is on hiatus until 2023). This cruise line was originally built to cater to millennials, and this itinerary includes excursions like a walking tour of Vienna and biking around Passau. On board, morning yoga classes and a rooftop ice bar ensure guests will always have something to do. A negative COVID-19 test may be required for unvaccinated passengers when entering foreign countries.

Other travelers might want to opt for a South American adventure with National Geographic. The 10-day Upper Amazon river cruise aboard the Delfin II offers a chance to spot diverse wildlife within this impressive ecosystem.

Cruises for Singles in Their 40s

Upscale, bigger cruises on ships from Princess, Holland America, and Celebrity will likely appeal to cruisers in their 40s, McDaniel says. These cruises tend to be a bit more expensive, but "appeal because they have some really great excursions and might go off the beaten path. They're destination-immersive experiences."

The seven-night Galapagos Southern Loop on Celebrity Xpedition is one fantastic option. The Galapagos Islands are a great destination for solo travelers and this cruise is a solid way to see them. Search for sea turtles, sea lions, and blue-footed boobies during the day, and spend the evening in the ship's hot tub or take in one of the nightly lectures by certified naturalists from the Galapagos National Park. All guests must be fully vaccinated and test negative for COVID-19 upon entry.

A seven-day Norwegian Fjords cruise aboard Princess Cruises' Sky Princess is an additional option for travelers hoping to explore another part of the world best seen from a ship.

Cruises for Singles in Their 50s

McDaniel says that a river cruise is a great option for someone in their 50s, with some lines waiving the single supplement fee and putting age restrictions on passengers (since you may not want little kids running around). Some companies, she notes, do a great job of hosting single mixers, which adds to the social experience. A cruise along the Danube or Rhine rivers is always a great choice, and there are several lines to choose from.

Sail along the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers on Viking's Grand European Tour , which starts in Amsterdam and ends in Budapest. Along the way, the ship stops in charming towns and major European capitals for a well-rounded trip through continental Europe.

The twelve-day Cities of Light cruise , also from Viking River Cruises, carries passengers between Paris and Prague with several stops in Germany along the way. On board, sip a glass of wine and enjoy the sight of the cities slipping by. For both Viking Cruises, guests must be fully vaccinated and test negative for COVID-19 upon boarding.

Cruises for Single Seniors

A world cruise is a great option for seniors, McDaniel says, as they tend to have more free time. These cruises visit multiple countries over a longer period of time, and after a while, the boat feels like home.

"One of the great things about being a senior is you tend to have a far more flexible schedule," she says. "You also likely have a bit more disposable income."

The 71-day Grand Africa Voyage from Holland America Line offers a round-trip journey from Fort Lauderdale, stopping in Portugal, Spain, Morocco, Greece, Jordan, Tanzania, Madagascar, South Africa, and more on its cruise around the African continent. All guests must be fully vaccinated and test negative for COVID-19 upon arrival.

Cunard's Centenary World Voyages is even longer, at 117 nights aboard the Queen Mary 2 . The cruise includes two transatlantic crossings and stops across Asia, South Africa, and Australia, departing and arriving in New York City. On a cruise this long, even the shiest solo traveler is bound to make a few friends. All guests ages 12 and up must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 14 days prior to travel.

Celebrity Apex

The Celebrity Apex – which made its inaugural sailing in June 2021 – can hold up to 2,910 passengers and 1,320 crew members. Guests can wine and dine at 29 restaurants, bars and lounges, then spend the night testing their luck at the casino or enjoying live music at the Magic Carpet (which offers great ocean views). Specialty restaurants include a steakhouse and a raw bar, while main dining options feature Mediterranean, Italian and French cuisines. There are also meeting spaces and multipurpose areas on board, as well as upscale shops. 

Visit the spa or adults-only Solarium pool to stay relaxed throughout your stay at sea. For younger travelers, there are some kid-friendly areas of the ship – such as a Camp at Sea. However, the ship is geared more toward adult clientele (or families with older children) looking for a relaxing escape.

The ship's staterooms, which start at 181 square feet, offer smart TVs, customizable air conditioning and plenty of storage space. Many rooms also offer private verandas. If you're willing to splurge, consider booking a room in The Retreat. This exclusive section of the ship features luxury accommodations as well as access to a private restaurant, sun deck and lounge. Plus, rooms in The Retreat offer more space, measuring up to 1,892 square feet.

The Celebrity Apex sails to European destinations like Greece, Italy, Croatia and Portugal, as well as to Caribbean hot spots like St. Thomas , Puerto Rico , Belize and Grand Cayman . 

Scarlet Lady

The first ship within the Virgin Voyages fleet, the adults-only Scarlet Lady welcomes more than 2,770 passengers and 1,160 crew members. Debuted in October 2021, the Scarlet Lady boasts a collection of unique amenities not often found on cruise ships, including a tattoo studio, a record shop and a blow-dry bar. And instead of a buffet or a dining hall, the Scarlet Lady offers a collection of more than 20 specialty restaurants, all covered by the cruise fare. Standouts include Extra Virgin, a traditional Italian restaurant serving handmade pasta, and Gunbae, a Korean barbecue eatery.

The Scarlet Lady also deviates from cruise industry tradition when it comes to onboard entertainment. Instead of Broadway classics, cruisers will be treated to six original shows, along with "micro plays" that are performed throughout the ship.

Cabin sizes range from 105 to 177 square feet for the Insider rooms to nearly 2,150 square feet for the RockStar Quarters suites. The latter are outfitted with marble bathrooms and serviced by RockStar Agents who are available to assist guests 24/7. All accommodations feature mood lighting, minibars, free Wi-Fi and adjustable Seabeds, which allow travelers to transform their beds into couches when they want to entertain.

Carnival Panorama

A member of Carnival Cruise Line's Vista class, the Carnival Panorama debuted in December 2019 as the first new Carnival ship homeported on the West Coast in 20 years. With a capacity of 4,008 guests and 1,450 crew, Panorama is one of Carnival's largest ships.

Among the ship's standout amenities is the Sky Zone – a trampoline park that offers dodgeball and basketball games, toddler bounce sessions and more. Other unique Carnival amenities found on the ship include a suspended bicycle in the air called SkyRide, a sprawling water park, the Cloud 9 Spa and an open-air recreation area and ropes course.

Dining options on board are just as diverse. In fact, there are more than a dozen dining venues aboard Carnival Panorama, including multiple Guy Fieri eateries, a sushi restaurant, a steakhouse, a seafood eatery and more.

Carnival Panorama offers the line's typical range of accommodation classes (Interior, Ocean View, Balcony and Suite) along with Family Harbor and Havana staterooms and suites. Havana Cabana Suites feature rain showers and patios equipped with hammock chairs, along with exclusive access to the Havana Bar & Pool. Meanwhile, Family Harbor accommodations are located next to the ship's Family Harbor Lounge and afford guests special perks, such as a free evening of babysitting and complimentary kids meals in the onboard specialty restaurants.

Sailing from Los Angeles , the ship cruises to destinations in Mexico, including Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas . It also departs from Singapore for transpacific voyages. 

Carnival Radiance

Carnival Radiance (previously Carnival Victory) set sail in December 2021 after a full transformation. The ship, which holds 2,984 guests and 1,108 crew members, boasts plenty of fun indoors and outdoors for cruisers of all ages.

Carnival Radiance features a ropes course, waterslides, a mini-golf course, dive-in movies in the evening and a sports area for activities like soccer, basketball, volleyball and boxing. The ship also offers a kids club for youths ages 2 to 17. The pool is surrounded by lounge chairs – perfect for relaxing – and those seeking additional quiet space can spend some time at the Serenity Adult-Only Retreat. Inside, the spa, the piano bar, the comedy club and the performance event venue, which features musicals, concerts and more, round out some of Carnival Radiance's most popular offerings. Dining options (14 eateries in total, including a Chef's Table experience) abound on this ship as well: Cruisers can enjoy casual fare at Big Chicken or Guy's Burger Joint, or sit down for a more upscale meal at Cucina del Capitano, Bonsai Sushi or the Steakhouse.

Staterooms aboard the ship include Interior (porthole and picture window choices are available), Ocean View, Balcony and Suite category options. Carnival Radiance sets sail from Los Angeles to destinations in Hawaii and Mexico .

Oceania's Marina accommodates up to 1,250 passengers and employs 800 crew members, maintaining the personalized service that the line is known for.  Marina offers signature amenities like the Aquamar Spa, a casino and a 2,000-book library. Onboard entertainment includes nightly live shows, painting and sketching lessons at the Artist Loft and cooking demos at The Culinary Center. While Marina went through a refurbishment in 2016, the ship will have an updated renovation in late 2023.  

Cruisers can choose from seven dining venues, including specialty restaurants like Jacques (with menus crafted by chef Jacques Pépin) and the Asian-inspired eatery Red Ginger, which recent passengers highly recommend.

Similar to its sister ship,  Riviera , cabins range from 174-square-foot Inside staterooms to 2,000-square-foot Suites. Higher category Veranda cabins and Suites come with perks like balconies, access to a Concierge Lounge, in-room iPads and more. All staterooms are equipped with flat-screen TVs, full-size bathtubs, and minibars stocked with soda and bottled water.

Oceania Marina sails to destinations in Europe, South America and more.

More colorful than most of Holland America's fleet, Oosterdam launched in 2003 and was last updated in 2016. The 1,964-passenger ship houses 812 crew members, making the passenger-to-crew ratio roughly 2-to-1.

The ship features six stateroom categories: Inside, Ocean View, Verandah, Signature Suite, Pinnacle Suite and Neptune Suite. All accommodations are outfitted with Sealy-Premium Euro-Top mattresses, flat-screen TVs and plenty of storage space.

Like other Vista-class ships, Oosterdam   is equipped with a large pool and a sizable spa and fitness area, along with BBC Earth Experiences and sports courts. While there are kids and teens clubs for younger passengers, most of the activities and entertainment on the ship are geared toward adults.

When it's time to dine, guests can enjoy varied dishes in the main dining room, Italian fare at Canaletto or other options ranging from casual to fine dining. 

Oosterdam departs from ports in  Fort Lauderdale , Buenos Aires , Rome , Athens and more. Itineraries include destinations in Europe, South America and Antarctica.

Nieuw Statendam

One of Holland America Line's newest cruise ships, Nieuw Statendam, launched in December 2018. This 2,666-passenger ship is the second in the line's contemporary Pinnacle Class collection. Like its sister ship, Koningsdam , this vessel places an emphasis on elegant, eye-catching design.

Along with its great aesthetics, Nieuw Statendam features a mix of engaging daytime and nighttime activities, as well as facilities designed to keep guests rested and relaxed. Passengers can unwind at the spa or pools, work up a sweat at the fitness center or pickleball court or participate in enriching activities like cooking demonstrations and wine-blending classes. At night, cruisers have several entertainment options, including the B.B. King's Blues Club, Rolling Stone Rock Room or the World Stage for theatrical performances.

For dining, expect a mix of options, including a traditional dining room, casual spots and specialty restaurants that feature cuisines from Asia, France and – of course – Holland. Cabin categories are just as diverse: Accommodations range from Inside and Ocean View staterooms to Verandah staterooms to spacious suites with balconies and living areas. 

Holland America now features an exclusive amenities program, Club Orange. Members can receive benefits such as a complimentary stateroom upgrade, a dedicated concierge hotline and skip-the-line priority access.

Members of Club Orange will also receive additional benefits when onboard Nieuw Statendam including a premium in-room breakfast menu and a private dining venue with an expanded menu.

Grand Princess

First launched in 1998, the 2,600-passenger Grand Princess underwent a renovation in March 2019 that added new top-deck dining venues like Alfredo's Pizzeria, Salty Dog Grill and Coffee & Cones. The Princess Theater was also refreshed to provide a more immersive audio experience. Other onboard amenities include the adults-only Sanctuary, duty-free boutiques and educational programs through the Discovery of SEA program.

The ship houses numerous dining venues, including one main dining room, two specialty venues and a variety of casual eateries serving classics like burgers and pizza. Come nightfall, passengers can enjoy cocktails at their pick of lounges.

The recently refurbished accommodations are outfitted with amenities like flat-screen TVs and minifridges. Though only 76% of exterior cabins offer private balconies – a lower percentage than other ships in the fleet – guests describe cabins as comfortable and spacious. Plus, thanks to a nearly 2-to-1 guest-to-crew ratio (the ship features 1,150 crew members), past cruisers describe the onboard service as attentive and friendly. What's more, each guest aboard Grand Princess receives an OceanMedallion wearable device to unlock his or her stateroom, make onboard payments, track down friends and family and more.

Grand Princess sails to destinations worldwide, including Alaska, Hawaii , Australia, the California coast and the South Pacific.

Enchanted Princess

The 3,660-passenger, 1,346-crew member Enchanted Princess made its debut in November 2021. Part of the cruise line's MedallionClass, the ship features new technology and each cruiser is given an OceanMedallion wearable device. Cruisers can expect things like keyless cabin entry, contactless boarding, speedy Wi-Fi access (for a fee), food and drink delivery to anywhere on the ship and more.

With one main dining room, several casual eateries and four specialty dining venues – ranging from Italian to steak – guests will have no problem finding suitable spots to eat. As for entertainment, the Enchanted Princess offers musical productions, movie screenings under the stars, comedians, singers, magic acts, a casino, bars and more. Daytime activities might include playing a game of basketball or volleyball at the sports courts, relaxing in two deep tank pools and several hot tubs, or indulging in spa treatments at the Lotus Spa. The ship also has kids club offerings for youths ages 3 to 17.

When it comes to cabins, all Enchanted Princess staterooms are outfitted with flat-panel televisions, desks and minifridges. The lowest (and most affordable) cabin class, Interior, ranges from 158 to 162 square feet, while the roomiest option, Sky Suite, sprawls across 1,873 square feet of space. Several stateroom options also include balconies.

The Enchanted Princess is expected to sail around Mexico, the Caribbean, northern Europe and Canada and New England on its upcoming voyages.

Norwegian Prima

Norwegian Prima first set sail in October 2022 and can hold 3,099 guests and 1,506 crew members. The latest ship in the fleet includes many of the cruiser-favorite amenities and activities that are standard across Norwegian , plus a few more exciting additions.

Accommodations include Studios (perfect for solo travelers), and Inside, Oceanview, Balcony, Club Balcony Suite and Suite staterooms. The Haven aboard the Norwegian Prima has been redesigned, with more spacious suites, upscale decor and The Haven's private sun deck. Outside their rooms, travelers will find plenty of dining options, including pub fare at The Local Bar & Grill, classic fare at the main dining room Hudson's, fine dining at The Commodore Room, international cuisine at Indulge Food Hall, casual eats at the Surfside Café & Grill and 24-hour room service, in addition to several specialty dining venues.

As far as activities go, cruisers can enjoy mini-golf, a racecar track, the water park and waterslides, plus games like darts, shuffleboard and pickleball. Those looking to relax can snag a lounge chair by the pool or book a treatment at the spa. Other options for fun include a casino, numerous bars and lounges, and a theater to enjoy musicals, concerts and The Price Is Right Live.

"Singles Cruise" - solo cruising vacations

Not very often, some "singles" cruise lines provide special deals on select voyages specially themed as solo travel vacations. Most deals are offered as specials on usually shorter itineraries and during low- or off-season times. However, each of these themed voyages are always well planned, limited as availability and bookable through (and hosted by) the cruise line brand and/or independent travel agencies.

"Single cabins" (aka studios) are no single supplement staterooms available on select ships only. Occasionally, special offers allow booking a double cabin at reduced single supplement rates. Same-sex cabin sharing is also offered by some companies, usually on smaller boats as well as on themed voyages.

What exactly is the difference between "single" and "solo" cruiser?

While a single cruiser wants to find others to congregate, a solo cruiser feels comfortable with the idea of a good time on her/his own. It is a personal choice to be alone, but it doesn't guarantee a pleasant vacation in our coupled-up society.

Many companies are being advertised as single-friendly, but only a few of them actually provide solo staterooms designed specifically to accommodate only one passenger.

This was not always the case- the old Cunard QE2 ship had some functional solo cabins designed specifically for families with nannies along. The company no longer makes these provisions for single travelers, and neither do other companies with their newer ships. But why is this? The answer is pretty simple - even small cabins can accommodate at least two!

The single cruising market today is not profitable enough to excuse single-cabin production. Revenue generation is of great importance to the companies, and a solo traveler spends less than a couple/family.

But there are real deals on genuine "singles cruise ships" - where it is still possible for a single traveler to find the rare single cabin, designed especially for one person. The existing "expedition" type ships also offer some solo cabins- a few, but pretty enough.

Singles cruise lines, ships, booking tips, information

Major brands/companies offer "single travel" deals rarely. When advertised as "Cruises For Singles", these voyages include various themed activities geared towards single/solo travelers only. In this case, "singles" means unmarried (often divorced) people who look to make friends, to have their "singles party" fun vacation, and sometimes - with a love connection in mind. This type of cruising is quite different from a single-person cruising where solo travelers embark on sea vacations.

Sea/river voyages for singles are operated with group booking deals - this way prices are cheaper, and all is well organized and pre-planned. Onboard activities include games, social gatherings, parties, dance lessons, speed dating events, guided excursions.

There are voyages with pre-planned events where singles are able to get to know each other. The typical age of travelers on singles voyages is between 30 and 60.

"Singles Cruise" deals - the single supplement question

Single supplement is the price a passenger pays to occupy the entire cabin all alone! Generally, staterooms are bookable at double occupancy. So if you don't want to share you must pay the absent individual price.

Unfortunately, a single supplement ends up with so excessive fees that singles would rather share with a stranger in order to save money. Single supplement fares vary from 110% to 200% (depending on company and ship), It means you'll have pay from 55 to 100% of full double occupancy fare.

Holland America Line and CCL-Carnival offer the so-called "single shares" - a solo passenger agrees to share a cabin with another (same-sex) passenger, and both pay the advertised rates.

Crystal  has a fixed 125% single supplement rate, so Crystal boats attract a great number of single travelers.

The super-expensive luxury brand Silversea offers super-single supplement fares of only 110% plus the possibility to make an itinerary fit your timetable.

How to avoid single supplement cruise rates?

All single cruisers hate single supplement rates! When you first find out that you must pay double simply because you have chosen to sail alone, you curse the company. But you will pay the nasty supplement - because there is no choice.

Many of the world's major lines make no allowance for single passengers and charge double occupancy rates. Not only that, but lines also charge the single guest additional port taxes and charges for the missing traveler as well. A few are the lines that are known for tacking on extra charges for single cruisers, in order to compensate for the lost onboard revenue that the second traveler would generate. Happily, there are a few companies that value solo passengers more highly and reduce single supplements.

But are there ways for avoiding this nasty single supplement? How to at least minimize its impact on your single travel vacation budget? Continue reading, and then follow the tricks ;-)

Ideas for singles cruise deals to avoid (minimize) single supplements rates

Book last minute! Booking a last-minute voyage is a possible way to find single supplement prices. Especially when the vessel has lots of empty cabins the company is trying to fill. This rule holds for about every line.

Low-season travel - sail during off-peak times! When a line charges normally 200% single supplement solo passengers sailing in their cabins, do you think it will reduce rates at peak demand times as holidays? If you sail when children are back in school, companies are more likely to deal.

Look for "not selling well" voyages! Certain vessels have weekend charters that leave them with a four-day sailing which is hard to fill. Such midweek sailing requires a week of vacation for working people. Let the travel agent check and see if the line would be willing to bargain.

Find these special single cruise travel deals! Search itinerary-schedule websites for unusual itineraries and lengths by ship. Then use an online booking site to check availability. When you find an offer with lots of availability and close sail date, the chance is on your side! Contact your travel agent to see if he/she makes a deal.

Check the Internet! A wide variety of agents specialized in single travel list double occupancy prices on the web- singles rates are right alongside. Many travel agents also have an inside track on sailings that offer single supplements that are quite advantageous. Some of the best on this market are linked in the below table.

Cruise Lines "Single Share" Programs

"single share" programs.

These match two singles by gender so that each pays the per person price for the cabin. But if you use to choose a matching program, you will be limited to a few lines offering such a program. UnCruise Adventures and Holland America have this, but most do not. You will also be restricted to the cabin category- share programs offer basic Inside/Oceanview cabins for cabin mate pairings.

Another disadvantage is that the company does not care about your age, sleeping habits, etc. The good news is that there are other ways for setting up a cabin share, more likely to work out!

Hosted Cruises for Singles

Another option that is highly recommended is the hosted singles cruises (officially named "Singles Cruise Host" programs). Lots of organizations sponsor voyages for single travelers and these group operators also help to find people to share with. They also pair compatible personalities. Companies like Singlesatsea, Singles cruise and Singlestravelintl (all COM-domains), organize single travelers in groups, often by theme or demographic (the 20s, 30s, 50s, and older). The better companies provide a questionnaire which asks about your habits.

Searching online for "solo cruise" deals

Search the Internet for cruise message boards. These will help to set up their own share arrangements. Message boards members can search the web for cabin mates on a variety of voyages. Post your voyage details, or respond to others who look interesting to you. You can find your voyage companion online!

This way you will have more options (cabin category, ship, line) and the opportunity to get to know each other. Plus, it's a challenge! Start with e-mails and proceed to the phone. Talk about what you are looking for and about your expectations.

No Single Supplement Cruises - why to book singles vacations, anyway?

Single cruise supplement is offered by virtually all the lines/operators, but the cheapest rates are on ships with "single cabins" (studios). Cheap "solo cruise deals" (with no single supplement rates) could be also offered as a bonus, cabin upgrade, special offers, part of a group booking, etc.

Single supplement rates depend on the company and ship - between 110% and 200%, meaning you're paying from 55% to 100% of the full cabin fare.

Some of the major companies (like CCL-Carnival and HAL-Holland America) offer "single shares" - for solo passenger who agrees to share the stateroom with another passenger.

The all-inclusive brands Crystal and Silversea have had single supplement rates, respectively 125% and 110%, but their ships sail on longer and way more expensive voyages.

Less popular for solo travelers cabin categories (such as balcony cabins, for example) may offer very reasonable affordable single supplement rates in the 150-160% range compared to 2-per-cabin rates. At the same time, popular among singles categories (like Oceanview and Interior cabins) have their rates increased. Generally, taxes/fees are no more than they usually are.

According to reviews and statistical data, currently RCI-Royal Caribbean and NCL-Norwegian offer the industry's best single supplement rates, but this is not a rule - and not on every voyage. As numbers, Royal Caribbean's deals are only ~US$40 more than the double occupancy rate. NCL's single supplement rates vary between 0-200%.

NCL's Transatlantic voyages offer a supplement between 120-160%.

In June 2018, Bahamas Paradise dropped its single supplements on all oceanview staterooms. The decision was based on Booking.com studies on solo travel showing over 40% of baby boomers booking solo cruises in 2017, and 21% planning voyages in 2018. The brand's no single supplement daily rates started from US$149 per person.

Booking "No Single Supplement" cruise deals

As sailings organized especially for singles, these are another very well-accepted type of land and sea travel deals. The "Single Parent" specials, though rarely available, offer great opportunities to share life experiences, to meet people with common interests, and to make new friends all over the world.

Who goes on Single Cruises?

Well, mostly single persons, of course. And while speaking of those single, but not alone people, I recommend you read Wikipedia's Single Person article.

Singles voyages attract mostly people between 40 and 50 years of age, who prefer ship travel as a way to socialize and connect. Single specials and general offers may refer either to dating services or a group-themed voyage for singles sharing the same interests, tastes, occupation, or of similar age, etc.

The "Single Cruise Over 40" and the "Senior Single Cruise" themed voyages are very popular for cruising solo.

No Single Supplement cruise specials - programming and activities

Traveling solo generally means that a passenger simply needs another person of the same sex as a roommate, to share the cost of the trip.

Some specialized in single travel agencies offer even roommate-matching services. The feature activities on a single travel ship vacation include introducing events, games, social gatherings, age-related events, dating events, parties, dance lessons, various classes, etc. As one of the most singles-oriented brands, Crystal boasts the "Ambassador Host Program" - especially for singles, solo travelers, and mostly for the unescorted ladies onboard Crystal's luxury vessels - with cultured and well-traveled hosts as dance and conversation partners.

Single occupancy deals are special rates as on most voyages, the company's official rates are based on double occupancy. To avoid paying double, check the company's single supplement rates, i.e. how much exactly you are going to pay for single occupancy. Pricing includes cabin, dining, onboard activities, and entertainment, plus themed for singles events organized by the travel agency (often, fares also include airfare).

Cruise ships with single cabins

Most studios are on newbuild ships , but many have been added to drydock-refurbished ships as well.

As to availability (fleetwide) NCL offers the most studios, and its best "no single supplement ship" is Norwegian Epic .

Epic's "Studios Staterooms" (128, many connecting) were specially designed and priced for solo travelers and are sizes 9 m2 (100 ft2). Exclusively for solo passengers, Epic has "Studios Lounge". Two more large NCL ships with solo cabins are Norwegian Breakaway  and Norwegian Getaway , each with 59 studios.

In October 2023 NCL announced that starting January 2024, the company has available for booking ~1000 solo staterooms fleetwide (across 19 ships). NCL also introduced three new cabin categories (Solo Inside, Solo Oceanview, Solo Balcony) which pricing/availability depends on itinerary/destination and demand.

Other popular boats with many single cabins are P&O Azura (18), P&O Ventura (18), Balmoral (64), Braemar (40).

Best cruises for singles over 20

For young singles, cruising can sometimes feel like an expensive way to meet people. To avoid the high cost of single supplements charged to solo travelers in standard cabins meant for at least two people, single cruisers can travel with friends and share a room. (Many cabins can sleep up to four.) Also, you might feel more confident heading to the ship's bars or nightclubs in a group.

Try short three- to five-night cruises on low-cost mainstream lines like Carnival , Norwegian Cruise Line or Royal Caribbean , where you'll find more young adults and more of a party scene . Singles on a budget can also save money cruising on older, smaller ships across the mainstream fleets, which typically have lower cruise fares.

Margaritaville at Sea is another good choice for quick and affordable two-night trips to the Bahamas, though you'll need to find love quickly on such a short cruise.

Twentysomethings who have a larger travel budget and wish to cruise on their own can look for cruise lines with solo cabins. These rooms for one are in limited supply, so they can be priced at a premium and sell out quickly.

Best cruises for singles over 30

Best cruises for singles over 40

Singles in their 40s generally are ready for a little less party and a little more romance on a singles cruise. This age group won't be out of place among festive singles on board Virgin Voyages or Carnival, but Celebrity Cruises is another cruise line to consider.

The line's newer Edge Class ships have a younger, hipper ambience than their older ships. Think martini bars, foodie havens and jazz clubs, all with decor that looks nothing like your parents' cruise ships.

For those who like to gamble, try the mainstream cruise lines. The large casinos offer yet another opportunity to meet other singles on board — particularly at the table games. Margaritaville at Sea is another line to consider with plenty of gambling singles on board.

For fortysomething singles looking for onboard romance, we suggest a studio cabin for seven nights on NCL's new Norwegian Viva bound for the Caribbean . There's plenty to do on board and in port to help you meet people.

Additionally, the solo cabins, which have been redone in a more elegant style than on some of the line's older ships, provide access to the Studio Lounge for socializing. The lounge has also been revamped, giving it an upscale feel with free daily snacks and drinks. (Note that Norwegian's cabins for one sell out quickly, so you'll want to book early.)

Another great pick would be Virgin Voyages' four-night Fire and Sunset Soiree sailings from Miami on Scarlet Lady . They include stops at Key West and a private beach club on Bimini , plus a sea day to get to know your fellow passengers. The cost for a single "sailor," as Virgin calls them, starts at around $700.

Best cruises for singles over 50

For senior singles cruises, all the previous options are still reasonable choices. However, some lines cater a bit more to this age group. The caveat is that cruise lines that cater to mature travelers are often targeted at couples, with solo travelers skewing older.

Oceania , Azamara and Holland America are tops on this list, especially on their shorter cruises that attract still-working professionals. The ships are large enough to have a mix of singles among the usual crowd of couples but small enough to provide a strong chance of actually meeting those other singles on board.

These lines offer port-intensive itineraries, so book ship tours to connect with like-minded folks on board since you likely won't spend as much time lounging around the pool.

For singles over 50, a Celebrity Cruises itinerary in the Mediterranean will likely include many other singles with whom you can mingle. Mediterranean cruises are popular with active mid-lifers looking to see more of the world. What could be more romantic than cruising the Greek Isles or the Italian coastline?

Best cruises for singles over 60

Single retirees with the freedom to enjoy longer and often more expensive cruises have loads of options for meeting people. The list starts with premium lines like Holland America, Oceania and Cunard , but also Viking and Princess Cruises .

This luxury line includes everything in one fare — even many fabulous Alaska excursions you would pay hundreds of dollars for on any other line. The ships are small enough that you can easily meet your fellow travelers, and the excursions make it easy to share experiences with other singles on board.

Cruise lines generally charge a "single supplement" to passengers traveling solo. From the cruise line's perspective, what they are selling is cabin space, and if there are two or more people in a cabin, they split the cost of that space. People traveling alone pay for all the space by themselves.

Most cruise lines start with the per-person rate based on double occupancy and add 50-100% to the price for a single. That means that a cabin that sells for $1,000 per person based on double occupancy would be sold to a single for $1,500 to $2,000.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Cruise operator Viking targets $11 billion valuation as IPO market stays hot

Viking Holdings, the European cruise line operator, is seeking to raise more than $1 billion in a public offering next week that could become the second-biggest IPO of 2024.

Viking is scheduled to price on April 30 and trade the next day, a person familiar with the deal told Fortune . The Pembroke, Bermuda–based company plans to sell 44 million shares at $21 to $25 each, according to a regulatory filing dated April 22. Viking will be offering 11 million shares with the remainder coming from shareholders, according to a statement . BofA Securities and JPMorgan are lead underwriters on the deal, which could end up valuing Viking—slated to trade under VIK on the New York Stock Exchange—at almost $11 billion.

Torstein Hagen, Viking’s chairman and CEO, founded the company in 1997. It has a fleet of 92 vessels that travel to all seven continents, including special expeditions to Antarctica and to the Arctic North.

“Looking toward the future, we believe there are a number of opportunities for growing Viking,” Hagen wrote in a letter accompanying the filing. “We have 24 new ships on order, with options for 12 more. We have also started to enter new markets, such as China and elsewhere in Asia, where we see significant growth potential over the long term.”

Revenue for Viking rose 48% to $4.7 billion in 2023. The company was profitable in 2022 but posted $1.86 billion in losses last year, and it’s highly leveraged, reporting $5.4 billion in total debt as of Dec. 31.

“We have substantial indebtedness and we may not be able to generate sufficient cash to service all of our indebtedness or to obtain additional financing if necessary,” Viking said in the regulatory filing.

The company is also backed by private equity. Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and TPG likely will each have nearly 5% of the firm’s voting power after the IPO.

The IPO market is bouncing back. Last week, Ibotta rose 17% during its first day of trading after pricing at $88. Rubrik, a Microsoft-backed cloud data security provider, is scheduled to list shares on Thursday and could raise as much as $713 million . Also on Thursday, Marex Group, a U.K.-based financial services platform, is expected to trade, according to IPOScoop.com.

The year’s biggest IPO still belongs to Amer Sport, the maker of Wilson tennis racquets, which raised $1.37 billion in February, according to data from Dealogic. Viking, if it prices at the top of its range, could raise as much as $1.1 billion.

December in Moscow: Weather, What to Pack, and What to See

Moscow in December is not for the faint of heart. Despite the fact that it's downright frigid, though, seeing the Russian capital's ornamental sites cloaked in snow is worth going in the colder months.

Whether you're eager to watch the famous ballet perform or more interested in admiring the incredible architecture of Saint Basil's Cathedral (and other landmarks), Moscow has something to offer just about everyone, as long as you bundle up.

The city's winter begins in November and lasts through February. In December, the weather is unusually cold and wet with snow. On average, Moscow sees .7 inches of snow during the whole month, but it isn't the type that clears up after a day or so. With temperatures lingering below freezing, the snow typically sticks around until the big springtime thaw.

The average temperature for this time of year is 23 degrees Fahrenheit (-5 degrees Celsius), although it could dip into the teens at times. Wind chill is a major factor to consider when traveling around Moscow, as it can make the city feel much colder than what it actually is. Winds in December average 12 miles per hour. The city is quite dark during this time of year, too, averaging just seven hours of sunlight per day.

What to Pack

Prepare for the freezing conditions simply by packing as warm as possible. Winter travel is tricky because warm clothes are so bulky and they weigh so much. Rest assured, though, you'll be happy you used your suitcase space on clunky boots and big coats rather than an abundance of cute sweaters when your toes are toasty and dry. Don't forget to bring:

• Hats, gloves, and scarves
• A high-quality coat
• A waterproof shell
• Wool base layers
• Waterproof boots

Even though Moscow doesn't celebrate Christmas until January, the city still feels festive throughout the month of December with plenty of winter performances and celebrations to ring in the season.

• The annual Winter Festival kicks off in the middle of December and continues until early January. Ice skating, winter markets, and amusement park rides are all part of the fun. 
• " The Nutcracker" originated in Russia, so watching this world-famous ballet in Moscow is a major cultural experience. The Royal Moscow Ballet does the famed Tchaikovsky work justice with 32 dancers, 80 sumptuous costumes, and a visually stunning set.
• On December 31, New Year's Eve celebrations take over Red Square. Consider watching the fireworks display from another vantage point (such as Tverskaya Ulitsa or the Balchug Kempinski Hotel) if you can't handle standing for hours in the cold.

• Christmas in Russia takes place on January 7, but the time between Christmas and New Year's is usually a time of rest and vacation for Russian families, many of which jet off to warmer destinations.
• Head to Red Square to see the New Year's Tree and look for decorations at GUM, Arbat Street, and other well-known locations.
• Moscow's outdoor ice skating rinks provide the opportunity to enjoy one of Moscow's most popular cold-weather activities.
