Thom Yorke and Johnny Greenwood performed with their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame group Radiohead steadily from 1985 through 2021.

Sure, there were a few side projects here and there — who can forget Yorke’s work with Atoms for Peace or Greenwood’s menacing “There Will Be Blood score — but it seemed like a good bet they’d always return to the band that made their name.

Things changed in 2022 when the pair joined forces with drummer Tom Skinner to form The Smile .

A slick record called “A Light For Attracting Attention” and a tour quickly followed.

Now, a year later, their new band has become a fixture on the indie rock touring scene as they reach the final leg of their second nationwide trek in as many years, which includes a stop at Queens, NY’s Forest Hills Stadium on Friday, July 7.

And if you want to see the group perform their indefinable brand of atmospheric, anthemic jazz-rock fusion live, you can catch them for cheap this summer .

The Smile Announce Summer 2023 North American Tour Dates

The Smile have announced 2023 North American tour dates for this summer. Thom Yorke , Jonny Greenwood , and Tom Skinner will kick off the 14-date leg on June 22 in Mexico City before stopping in Florida, North Carolina, New York, Philadelphia, Ohio, and elsewhere. Find the full itinerary below.

To coincide with the news, the Smile have also announced a limited edition live EP titled Europe: Live Recordings 2022 . The release will be strictly available on vinyl and includes songs from the band’s debut album, last year’s A Light for Attracting Attention : “The Opposite,” “Thin Thing,” “The Same,” “Waving a White Flag,” and “ Free in the Knowledge .” Also included is their own rendition of Yorke’s 2009 solo track “FeelingPulledApartByHorses.”

In recent months, the Smile released the live album The Smile (Live at Montreux Jazz Festival, July 2022) and stopped by the NPR office to play a “ Tiny Desk Concert .” Prior to that, they were the musical guests on an episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon .

As the days grow shorter in late fall, there will still be something to smile about for fans of Thom Yorke , Jonny Greenwood and Tom Skinner. The first American tour by the group, collectively known as the Smile — and not to be confused with Greenwood and Yorke’s other group, Radiohead — has been set for late fall.

The trio’s shows in the U.S. will all take place in mid-sized theaters, beginning Nov. 14 at Providence, RI’s Veterans Memorial Auditorium and wrapping up just before Christmas with a Dec. 21 gig at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

Stops along the way include two New York City shows early in the tour, at Brooklyn’s Kings Theatre Nov. 18 and Manhattan’s Hammerstein two nights later.

Other venues along the routing, most of them historic theaters, include Chicago’s Riviera, Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, San Francisco’s Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, Toronto’s Massey Hall, New Orleans’ Orpheum, Detroit’s Masonic Temple and Portland’s Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall.

Tickets go on sale to the general public Friday at local time 10 a.m. An announcement from the band said to check the group’s website for additional information on ticket presales, but as of this writing, nothing is on the site beyond general on-sale times.

The Smile’s Nigel Godrich-produced debut album, “A Light for Attracting Attention,” came out for streaming and digital downloads on May 13. CD and vinyl copies will be released June 17.

A European tour began May 16 in Croatia and wraps up with a show in Sicily July 20. There’ll also be a one-off U.K. show at London’s All Points East on August 28 prior to the band taking to the U.S. in mid-November.

Thom Yorke most recently toured as a solo artist, prior to the pandemic in 2019, although he played one gig in Switzerland this past spring. For Radiohead, it’s been a longer gap, as the group last toured in the summer of 2018.

Reviews for the Smile’s debut album have been strong, with an aggregate score of 86 on Metacritic. Uncut magazine said the album “feels more like a refreshment, refinement or even fulfillment of Radiohead core principals, rather than an extracurricular dalliance.”

Don’t expect to hear the Smile play any Radiohead songs on tour, however; setlists from the European tour indicate shows are made up entirely of Smile songs, with the exception of a Yorke solo tune, “Feeling Pulled Apart by Horses,” that typically shows up amid the encores.

London’s Guardian offered a four-star rave review for the group’s show there, saying “Thom Yorke’s latest Radiohead spin-off, alongside Jonny Greenwood and Tom Skinner, excels the more it explores new territory in a thrilling frenzy of analogue synths and percussion. … The vast bulk of these songs are intense, layered and feature Yorke’s vocals and Greenwood on guitar. Exactly how is this not a Radiohead gig? Because Colin Greenwood, Ed O’Brien and Phil Selway are not here? So many of Yorke’s non-Radiohead projects have privileged digitals over instrumentation. It has been easy to interpret his extracurricular activity as the restless singer exploring electronic sounds that other members of Radiohead did not wish to. But the Smile is chock-a-block with guitars – electric and acoustic – with live drumming, and harp for good measure. … (Yet) the Smile are most musically convincing when they stretch farther away from Radiohead.”

The Smile Are Coming Back for More With 2023 Tour Dates

Radiohead offshoot the Smile have announced a second run of North American tour dates for this summer.

The trio — which features Thom Yorke , Jonny Greenwood , and Tom Skinner — will launch the 14-date run on June 22 at the National Auditorium in Mexico City. The run will continue over the next month wrapping July 20 at the Factory in Chesterfield, Missouri. 

Tickets for all shows will go on sale on Feb. 3. Complete information is available on the Smile ’s website.

Along with announcing the tour, the Smile are also prepping another new live release, Europe: Live Recordings 2022 . As the title suggests, the vinyl-only EP — out March 10 — features six songs recorded at various points during the band’s European run last year, including “The Opposite,” “Thin Thing,” Waving a White Flag,” and a rendition of Yorke’s 2009 solo track, “FeelingPulledApartByHorses.”

Having just completed a triumphant tour, The Smile has confirmed a new run of North American dates for summer 2023. Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood and Tom Skinner will kick off the 14-date excursion on June 22nd with the band’s first ever show in Mexico City. The tour will then proceed throughout the United States and Canada, marking The Smile’s debut live performances in every city they play, with the exception of their return to New York where they’ll headline Forest Hills Stadium on July 7th.

The band has also shared details of a limited edition live EP, Europe: Live Recordings 2022 . True to its title, the EP is comprised of live recordings of fan favorites from The Smile’s widely acclaimed debut album, A Light For Attracting Attention , as well as the band’s rendition of Thom’s 2009 solo track “FeelingPulledApartByHorses.” Europe: Live Recordings was recorded in various cities over the course of The Smile’s first ever tour this past summer. The project is available on vinyl only on March 10th via XL Recordings.

The Smile Announce 2023 North American Tour Dates

Today, The Smile announced that they will jump across the pond to perform a series of North American tour dates this summer. The band, which includes Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood and Thom Yorke, as well as Sons of Kemet’s Tom Skinner, will embark on a 14-stop run when the tour commences in Mexico City on June 22.

After a South of the Border excursion, the band will pop over to Austin, Texas, where they will perform a gig at The Moody Theater as a part of ACL Live on June 25. Then, the trio will make their way to The Sunshine State for shows in Miami and St. Augustine, Fla. 

In continuation of their North American tour, The Smile will remain in the Southern region of the U.S., performing in both the Carolinas before a one-night stand at The National in Richmond, Va., on July 5. Next, the group will work their way up the Eastern Seaboard en route to Forest Hills Stadium in Queens, N.Y. 

They’ll play in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh before moving to Cleveland for a show at the Agora Ballroom on July 11. The sole Canadian show will occur next, at Place Bell in Laval, Quebec. Finally, The Smile’s North American tour will conclude with two gigs in Missouri on July 19 and 20.

The Smile Announce 2023 North American Tour Dates

Today, The Smile announced that they will jump across the pond to perform a series of North American tour dates this summer. The band, which includes Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood and Thom Yorke, as well as Sons of Kemet’s Tom Skinner, will embark on a 14-stop run when the tour commences in Mexico City on June 22.

After a South of the Border excursion, the band will pop over to Austin, Texas, where they will perform a gig at The Moody Theater as a part of ACL Live on June 25. Then, the trio will make their way to The Sunshine State for shows in Miami and St. Augustine, Fla. 

In continuation of their North American tour, The Smile will remain in the Southern region of the U.S., performing in both the Carolinas before a one-night stand at The National in Richmond, Va., on July 5. Next, the group will work their way up the Eastern Seaboard en route to Forest Hills Stadium in Queens, N.Y. 

They’ll play in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh before moving to Cleveland for a show at the Agora Ballroom on July 11. The sole Canadian show will occur next, at Place Bell in Laval, Quebec. Finally, The Smile’s North American tour will conclude with two gigs in Missouri on July 19 and 20.

How many days do you need to spend in Egypt?

If you plan to visit Egypt once during your lifetime or you want to hit most important cities and sightseeing within the same visit, in this case from 7 - 10 days will be the most recommanded for trips to Egypt. During your holiday you must visit Cairo and do a Nile Cruise from Luxor to Aswan at a minimum. If you stay longer, you can do the beautiful city of Alexandria or relax in any of the Red Sea resorts like Sharm El Sheikh or Hurghada. But if you want a real desert safari experience, you will need to go farther out into the Western Desert (Dakhla, Kharga, Farafra and the famous Siwa Oasis near the Libyan border), but you’ll have to tack on a few extra days to accommodate the addition.

How long is the Nile Cruise trip in the area between Luxor and Aswan?

It differs depending on from which city it will start. The Nile Cruise itinerary from Luxor to Aswan takes 4 nights / 5 days of almost 2 days of sailing. While The Nile Cruise itinerary from Aswan to Luxor takes 3 nights / 4 days of almost 1 day of sailing. the difference in trip length is due to Nile River water flow direction which flows from the south to the north. So it takes longer from Luxor to Aswan because the Nile Cruise in this case sails against the river current. We recommend to start the trip from Luxor to get the best experience of the River Nile and its green valley which embraces one of the oldest civilizations in the world. Nile Cruises are not available everyday but 3 days a week; Saturdays, Mondays & Thursdays from Luxor, while from Aswan on Saturday, Monday and Wednesday.

What to expect from a Nile Cruise?

A Nile cruise is one of those journeys you feel it imperative to take, at least once in a lifetime. Trips generally run in just the 210-Kilometers stretch between Luxor and Aswan of four or five days for the one way or of eight days for the two ways, with long periods spent tied up at night at the ports of Luxor and Aswan, or at one or more of the most important cities lying between those cities like Esna or Edfu. There are many different ships to choose from, ranging from traditional steamer Nile Cruises (best suited to those that value history and authenticity) to luxurious modern cruise ships (geared towards those for whom creature comforts are a priority). The itineraries of the vast majority of Nile Cruises are the same, including these stops, whether southbound or northbound: Luxor, Edfu, Kom-Ombo, Esna and Aswan. Then there's a side trip to Abu-Simbel, south of Aswan and beyond the High Dam there by plane or bus.

What are the visa requirements for visiting Egypt?

There are 41 countries whose citizens are eligible for an Egypt visa on arrival any of the country’s entry points “airports and ports”. This type of visa is valid for a one-month period; the 27 states in the European Union, Australia, Canada, Georgia, Japan, South Korea, Macedonia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Norway, Russia, Serbia, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, and the United States. For other nationalities (except the Gulf countries) visas should be obtained from Egyptian embassies or Consular Missions abroad, and this type of visa is valid only for travel within three months from the date of issue and is valid only for one-month stay in Egypt starting from the arrival date.

Can we visit the Pyramids from Sharm El Sheikh or Hurghada?

Yes, Sharm Smile Tour runs day trips from Sharm El Sheikh or Hurghada to visit the Giza Pyramids, the Sphinx and the Egyptian Museum. Traveling between destinations could be by plane or in an air-conditioned bus,These day tours start usually by 1-5AM and finish by 10PM. In Cairo our guests will be escorted by a private tour guide who will work to give our guests a unique experience. Lunch meal is included during the day.

What languages do Egyptians speak?

Arabic language is the official language of Egypt but the colloquial Egyptian (Masry) Arabic is the most widely spoken in the country and it is not much different from the starndard Arabic but it is much easier. English and other languages, like French, Italian, Spanish, Russian, German ..ect, are most widely used among people working for the tourism sector. English and French are taught in Egyptian schools but it's not spoken as second languages in Egypt. But Not all people in Egypt are fluent in English.

Is it safe to travel to Egypt?

Despite Egypt had a bit of instability in the recent few years due to the revolutions happened in Egypt, but it is now very safe. Police security forces spreed across all Egyptian cities, especially around the areas where tourists frequent, taking the highest measures not to wait till something could happen. Tourism sector is a very vital source for the Egyptian national income. It is advisable when visiting Egypt first time to comunicate with someone who knows Egypt and speaks English well enough to explain it to you. Egypt is usually known as it has a very low crime rate.

Is tipping a standard practice in Egypt?

The first thing to consider is that baksheesh (tipping) is very much part and parcel of Egyptian culture. Tipping is a way of life in Egypt because most people working have very low wages, so tips are expected in Egypt for almost any high standard of service provided. Service charges and taxes are by default included in any bill. but these fees don't go to people who are serving. So it will be advisable and courteous to directly tip the servers with an additional 10%.

Also, SST involves small farmers in our tours and excursions programs in order to bring our clients to participate in date picking and olive harvesting with local families.

BEDOUIN ESCAPE

Discover the Bedouin way of life and spend the night in the Tunisian Sahara Desert. Go on safari and spot animals such as oryx and gazelles. Enjoy delicious Bedouin food and cooking demonstrations. Day 1: Enjoy a convenient pick-up from your hotel in Douz and board a Land Cruiser. Join the desert and let your guide tell you stories about the past and present of the Sahara. Learn about the many customs and traditions you will discover throughout the evening. Explore the Douz Desert Reserve and go on a wilderness safari. Spot Arabian gazelles, fennecs and oryx. Then settle into a camp inspired by Bedouin culture. Wander inside, past the camp's flickering lights and sit down to dinner. Participate in a variety of cultural activities and enjoy your meal. Sip Arabian mint tea, sit back and relax. Watch the Bedouin chef prepare a traditional meal. Watch a bread making demonstration. Watch Tunisia's national bird, the falcon. Return to your table and watch a cooking demonstration. Learn how to prepare local flat bread over open flames. Enjoy dinner under the stars. Sample a variety of Bedouin specialties. After your meal, sit around the fire and watch the stars. Enter your Arabian tent when you are ready to sleep and enjoy a comfortable mattress, pillows and blanket. Make yourself comfortable and sleep in the heart of the desert. Day 2: Wake up to a beautiful sunrise and the smell of strong Arabian coffee. Watch your breakfast being prepared. Enjoy a traditional bread for breakfast. Eat your meal and meet your driver to return to Douz.

Cultural Escape

Spend your day exploring 3 of Tunisia's historic cities, Kairouan, El Jem and Sousse. Be picked up from your accommodation in Tunis and head to Kairouan. Kairouan was founded in 670 AD and flourished under the Aghlabid dynasty. Visit the Great Mosque of Kairouan, the Aghlabids Basins, and the Sidi Sahbi Mausoleum. Spend some time exploring the medina of Kairouan and enjoy a typical Kairouan lunch. After lunch, head to the small village of El Jem. Here you will have the opportunity to see the ruins of the amphitheater of El Jem. The amphitheater is the largest coliseum in North Africa and could hold up to 35,000 people. Your next stop is Sousse. Here you will visit the old medina of Sousse and the port of El Kantaoui. Return to Tunis and be dropped off at your accommodation in the city.

Camel ride in the Sahara

Enjoy a 2-day camel ride in the Sahara Desert. Spend the night in a Berber camp and watch the sun set behind the golden dunes. Sit around the campfire and enjoy a traditional meal. On the first day, get picked up at your hotel or accommodation in Douz, meet your camel drivers and start your camel ride. Ride your camel and marvel at the incredible views of the golden dunes and the beautiful scenery that changes with the time of day. At noon, take a break for lunch. Take pictures of the impressive desert while the cook prepares a delicious meal. Then continue your camel ride until sunset. Admire the beautiful views of the sun setting behind the golden dunes. Arrive at the desert camp, sit down to a traditional Berber dinner and discover the famous bread prepared over an open fire. Spend the night under the starry Sahara sky and drum around the fire. In the morning, enjoy the beautiful sunrise and a Berber breakfast. Continue your camel ride through the incredible dunes and beautiful scenery and finish your adventure in the Tunisian desert. Return to your original meeting point and enjoy a transfer to Douz.

Tataouine and Chenini: guided day tour

Return to the time of the Berbers, the caravans and the Ksours on this guided tour of the fascinating city of Tataouine. On this day trip, you will visit some of the most spectacular sites in the region. Enjoy an early morning pick up from your accommodation by a friendly driver. After a short introduction, set out to discover the wonders of southern Tunisia. Start your journey by leaving the island of Djerba, drive along an ancient Roman road and take some great vacation photos of Chahbania on the way.Continue to Tataouine, the city that gave its name to the planet Tatooine in the Star Wars saga, and enjoy some free time to wander around the market and practice bargaining with the merchants. Continue on to the Berber village of Chenini, which offers a view of the mountain, and stay for about 1 hour with your local guide. This guide will be happy to show you the different buildings that make up the village, such as the oil mill, the mosque, the houses carved in the mountains, and much more. Then enjoy a delicious local meal. From there, continue to Ksar Ouled Soltane, where some scenes from the Star Wars movie "The Phantom Menace" were filmed. To finish this fantastic day, return to Djerba in an air-conditioned vehicle.

Tunis: guided walking tour in the medina

Discover the historic city of Tunis on a 4-hour guided walking tour. Explore the stores, mosques and monuments of the historic medina. Pick up bargains at the souks and central market of Tunis. Meet your guide at hotel. Explore the city and discover all aspects of Tunis: the old and the new, the modern and the traditional. Visit the University of Tunis and learn more about Tunisia's proud modern education system. 30% of the country's national budget is spent on education. Visit the souks, a collection of stores and boutiques that have been used for trade since the 13th century. Wander through the winding streets of the medina of Tunis and admire its many stores, monuments and mosques. Let your guide tell you about the rich architectural heritage of the city of Tunis and see examples of Islamic and Romanesque architecture. Make a stop at Tourbet el Bey and admire the royal Tunisian mausoleum. Stroll through the fresh fish, fruits and vegetables at the central market of Tunis, an oasis of life.

Wine tasting experience

Tunisia is known around the world for producing crowd-pleasing wines. This half-day tour will take you to the birthplace of this beautiful wine region. During the tour, your guide will share with you the history of the birth of the Tunisian wine industry. You will start your morning tour by being picked up at your hotel in Tunis before being driven to Mornag. There you will have a wine tasting, as well as a wine and cheese tasting. Afterwards, you will take a guided bike tour of the charming vineyards of Mornag. When you have had your fill of tours and tastings, you will have the opportunity to purchase the wine you have tasted. For wine lovers of all levels, this exceptional tour and tasting experience is not to be missed.

Share, exchange with the Toujane population

Elaborated with a local guide of Toujane, we wished to give to this program a particular dimension. Indeed, Toujane is a small village which lives essentially from agriculture and from a little tourism thanks to its craft industry (weaving of kilims). Djerba – Toujane Arrived at Toujane, you will settle in the troglauberge of Dahar then you will have lunch. Then, your guide will lead you to the discovery of the village and its alleys. You will visit the oil mill and an old troglodyte house. Your guide will explain you how these houses were built in the ground. Then you will attend a weaving demonstration by a woman of the village. The carpets and shawls of Toujane are famous.

Culinary experience with a local

Get ready for an incredible culinary experience during this unique cooking class in Ksar Jouamaa. From the market to your plate, learn how to prepare a salad, egg brik (a traditional pastry) and a couscous dish using fresh ingredients purchased in one of the city's most famous souks. After a pick-up from your hotel, the adventure begins with a transfer to Ksar Jouamaa. Arrive and stroll through the market among the vibrant stalls of meat, vegetables, herbs and spices. You'll learn how these spices have been used throughout the history of Tunisian cuisine, and how to use each spice to make a perfect dish. Irish eyes smile upon Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry in Zurich Classic of New Orleans triumph

Duo outlasts chad ramey/martin trainer in playoff at tpc louisiana.

When Martin Trainer missed his par-saving, playoff-extending putt late Sunday at TPC Louisiana, the Irish lads – you couldn’t really call them anything else, could you? – looked at each other and hugged. Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy had won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

Lowry lifted McIlroy up in a colossal embrace, and the celebration was on.

The duo – friends for a quarter century, nearby homeowners in South Florida and weekly playdate pals with their young kids – turned things around Sunday after a tough start and walked away PGA TOUR winners, again.

“We went out there, we had loads of fun, and we won the tournament. You couldn’t ask for a better week,” Lowry said.

“To win any PGA TOUR event is very cool, but to do it with one of your closest friends … Think about where we met and where we've come from, to be on this stage and do this together – just awesome to be able to do it alongside this guy,” McIlroy added.

For McIlroy, it was his 25th TOUR title, his third in a tournament debut. He now has at least one win in seven consecutive PGA TOUR seasons. Lowry won for the first time on TOUR since the 2019 Open Championship, his third TOUR win overall.

McIlroy and Lowry were the expected champions, given the lack of proven winners around them on the leaderboard heading into Sunday. But no one could have predicted Trainer and Chad Ramey zipping 25 spots up the leaderboard in the final round after a format-tying 9-under 63. They were waiting around for upwards of three hours before finding out they would be in a playoff.

And even though McIlroy and Lowry were the favorites, that doesn’t mean the win was guaranteed.

Lowry said at breakfast Sunday they noticed how much the trees were whipping and yet, Ramey and Trainer shot “an unbelievable score.” Lowry and McIlroy were 1-over through six holes and needed to make something happen quickly – and that’s exactly what they did.

“To play the last 12 holes in 5-under I think was very, very good," Lowry said. "It showed a lot about our character and how much we wanted to win this thing,”

Lowry is about two years older than McIlroy; the duo first represented Ireland at the 2007 European Amateur Team Championship. They were European Ryder Cup teammates in both Wisconsin and Rome. And they played together at the Olympics in 2021, something they’re hoping to do again this summer in Paris.

“I know to go back to Ireland with an Olympic medal would be like a dream,” Lowry said.

“I was in a seven-way playoff in Tokyo for a bronze medal, and I’ve never tried so hard to finish third in my life,” added McIlroy.

This was McIlroy’s fourth straight week of TOUR competition, and Lowry’s third straight. There were no signs of fatigue from either man late Sunday at TPC Louisiana, with McIlroy knocking his drive on the par-5 18th in regulation upwards of 350 yards. Lowry, with a laugh, said he wasn’t sure what to do from the position his partner had left him in.

This wouldn’t be considered a breakthrough victory for either player, given their long-standing pedigree and solid starts to 2024 (Lowry had two top-five finishes in Florida, while McIlroy won on the DP World Tour earlier this year and finished third at the Valero Texas Open earlier this month), but their easy chemistry in Louisiana could be a harbinger of good things to come.

The fans in New Orleans, too, seemed to buoy the boys. There were chants of "Rory, Rory," and there was a story relayed on the CBS broadcast of Lowry and McIlroy getting a standing ovation when they left dinner on Saturday night at Arnaud’s, a jazzy, 100-year-old fine-dining spot in New Orleans' French Quarter.

“It's not lost on me how cool that is. Every time I get to play in front of thousands of people, the little boy in me just thinks it's so cool and so exciting,” McIlroy said. “The crowd really made the weekend.”

“Rory brings a crowd, and people love him. We've got a lot of love this week in New Orleans, and we've had just the best week,” added Lowry.

What now, though? It was a big week and a big win for some of the TOUR’s most affable players. For Lowry, he’s earned his way into the rest of the Signature Events on the 2024 schedule, and it’s “freed him up,” he said. For McIlroy, he had exited big events like THE PLAYERS and the Masters with a few more questions about his game and its overall direction. This week, though, McIlroy reflected on why he and Lowry, all those years ago back home, started playing golf – because it was fun.

“I think sort of reinjecting a little bit of that fun back into it in a week like this week – it can always help,” McIlroy said.

“Hopefully we can both kick on now,” Lowry said of good things to come. “It was great fun all week, everything about it was just brilliant.”
