The Smooth Cruise Is Back!

(NEW YORK, NY) -- Smooth Jazz New York with  Smooth Jazz New Jersey  present Jonathan Butler and Gerald Albright on The Smooth Cruise on June 22, 2023. The cruise sails from Pier 40 (Westside Hwy. and Houston Street) in New York, NY. Boarding is at 6:30pm; the cruise departs at 7:30pm. There is a buffet and cash bar available on board.

After 31 consecutive seasons, the Smooth Cruise became a casualty of COVID and ended in the summer of 2019. Originally named the  CD101.9 Smooth Cruise , this unique music experience was founded by Maplewood resident Rich Engel and Tribune Broadcasting’s New York Radio Station CD101.9 (WQCD).

With the demise of the station, the series continued as the Smooth Cruise produced by Smooth Jazz New York. This Summer, the Smooth Cruise returns to New York Harbor in a big way on a spacious yacht,  The Cornucopia Majesty . This beauty sports elegance and a capacity of 1100 persons.

With the New York skyline as a backdrop, two icons of Contemporary Jazz, South African  Jonathan Butler,  renowned R&B Jazz fusion Vocalist and Acoustic Guitarist, will perform with his own quintet, followed by Saxophonist and  double Grammy winner   Gerald Albright  and his unique group.

Jonathan Butler  (Jazz) -  Born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa, Jonathan Butler spent his youth under apartheid, and official government policy of political, legal, and economic discrimination against non-whites. His escape was music. The youngest of twelve children, at age 7, he began singing publicly in South African townships. Not yet in his teens, Butler’s talents as a singer and guitarist were recognized and he soon toured his poverty stricken country in a traveling variety show. In his travels, he could neither comprehend the extreme destitute nor the harsh treatment he endured and bared witness to under the reign of Apartheid. Afrikaans was his native tongue, but he learned English on the road.

After signing his first record deal as a teen with British record producer Clive Caulder’s Jive Records, Jonathan’s premier single made him the first black artist to be played on white South African radio stations. The single won a Sarie Award, South Africa’s equivalent to the Grammy. His self-titled debut album also garnered two Grammy nominations; one for the R&B-pop vocal statement “Lies” and the other for “Going Home,” a poignant instrumental. Other releases include Jonathan (2005), Gospel Goes Classical (2006) with Juanita Bynum, Brand New Day (2007), So Strong (2010), and 2012’s Grace and Mercy, filled with the soulful sounds and insightful lyrics fans have come to expect from this veteran performer.

Gerald Albright  ( Contemporary Jazz) --  Jazz and R&B icon Gerald Albright is considered one of the most innovative and successful artists of the last 25 years. One of the biggest stars of R&B, contemporary and straight-ahead jazz, he’s earned a reputation as a “musician’s musician.”  The Los Angeles born musician began piano lessons at an early age. His love of music flourished when he was given a saxophone that had belonged to his piano teacher. By the time he enrolled at the University of Redlands, he was already a polished saxophonist. He made the switch to bass guitar after seeing Louis Johnson in concert. A few months after graduating college, jazz pianist/R&B singer Patrice Rushen was forming her own band and he joined her on sax.  When the bass player left mid-tour, Albright replaced him, finishing the tour on bass guitar.

During the ’80s, Gerald became a highly requested session musician, playing on albums artists including Anita Baker, Ray Parker, Lola Folana, Atlantic Starr, Olivia Newton-John, the Temptations, and Maurice White. He also toured extensively with Les McCann, Jeff Lorber, Teena Marie, the Winans, Marlena Shaw, Quincy Jones, and Whitney Houston, among others. He went on to record several successful solo albums. Two hit the #1 on Billboard’s Top Contemporary Jazz Chart, and were nominated for Grammy Awards in 1989 and 1990. In 1998, Phil Collins asked Gerald to front a Big Band and they toured together. They also recorded one of Albright’s tunes, “Chips N’ Salsa” on Collins’ Big Band Project, entitled “A Hot Night In Paris.” Later that year, Gerald released “Pleasures of the Night” with Will Downing which hit #1 on Billboard’s Top Contemporary Jazz Albums chart. Most recently, “Sax for Stax” received a 2009 Grammy nomination for Best Pop Instrumental Album and “Pushing the Envelope” followed suit in the same category in 2010.

Staterooms are made available to Pre-Sale Reservation holders based upon cruise history and the order of registration. The earlier you complete a Pre-Sale Reservation, the more likely you will be able to reserve the Stateroom that you desire  
• Making a Pre-Sale Reservation requires a single non-refundable deposit of $300, which will be applied towards the final cost of your stateroom. The balance of your deposit will be due when you complete your Reservation.

Najee is one of the original innovators of Urban Contemporary Jazz/Smooth Jazz. With two Platinum and four Gold albums under his belt, the native New Yorker was nominated for a Grammy in 1988 for “Najee’s Theme” and is the recipient of many other music awards including the Soul Train Music Award for Best Jazz Artist, NAACP Image Award, and Trumpet Awards.

Three decades later, this quadruple threat who is equally adept on soprano, tenor and alto saxophones and flute is going strong! Throughout his career, Najee has worked with many great artists including Quincy Jones, Will Downing, Patti La Belle, George Duke, Al Jarreau, Marcus Miller, Joe Sample, Lalah Hathaway, Jeff Lorber, Wayman Tisdale, Dave Koz, Lionel Richie, Gerald Veasley, Jonathan Butler, MAYSA , Ledisi, and was part of Prince’s “Hit and Run Tour”.

Najee’s 2012 album, “The Smooth Side of Soul” pairs the smooth jazz icon with special guests including Phil Perry, Jeff Lorber, Chris “Big Dog” Davis, and Pieces of a Dream’s James Lloyd. The album comes “highly recommended” by SoulTracks.

Join us Wednesday, July 31st for a beautiful evening on the Hudson featuring a superb balance of song-craft and musicianship by Najee.

Dave Koz  & Friends will return in 2023 with a fresh incarnation of the Summer Horns tour, which will find the chart-topping saxophonist teaming up with two other sax greats –  Candy Dulfer  and  Eric Darius .

SMOOTH CRUISE NEW YORK IS BACK

After thirty consecutive seasons the Smooth Cruise became a victim of COVID and ended in 2019. The 2023 return of the Smooth Cruise presented by Smooth Jazz New York with Smooth Jazz New Jersey, will be with the Cornucopia Cruise Lines “Majesty” a luxury yacht with a 1,000 passenger capacity.
