The Almighty Star Trek Lit-verse Reading Order Flow Chart
TrekBBS user Thrawn constructed an intricate flow chart to help you navigate the many Star Trek novels by where they fit into the continuity of the Star Trek universe. The screenshot here is just a small corner of the huge chart.
Whether you're a fan of TNG, DS9, Voyager, or Enterprise the chart below will show how they spin off into New Frontier, Titan, Klingon Empire, or Vanguard, and crossover into Destiny, Typhon Pact, The Fall, Mirror Universe, and more; letting you chart your own path through the Trek-litverse. Once you've got to grips with the flow chart you might also find some of my lists a useful reference too.
The chart encourages a reader to start anywhere they like, as the novels themselves fill you in on what you need to know. However, the chart will help you to decide what to read next and how the stories fit with each other. There aren’t many novels included from the era of Kirk and Spock, just a few that were set after the movie era began. More reading suggestions can be found with the chart at the Trek Collective. -via Metafilter

The Almighty Star Trek Lit-Verse Reading Order
With upwards of 500 novels in publication, it’s no surprise that many people are confused about the continuity of the Star Trek novels. With the help of TrekBBS user Thrawn , there is now a fantastic aid called the Star Trek Lit-Verse Reading Order Flowchart . Click the image below to see it in full size.
Don’t know where to begin? Here are some suggested jumping off points from The Trek Collective themselves:
- If you want to get straight into the modern prose continuity the Destiny crossover trilogy is a great place to jump in, leading to stories from several series set after it. One step back from Destiny is Articles of the Federation , which is the perfect introduction to the world of Federation politics which becomes prominent in Destiny and beyond.
- DS9 was the first series to enjoy a post-TV relaunch; the main new DS9 adventures start from Avatar . If you’d prefer to jump ahead to the more recent DS9 stories they have a good jumping on point comes after Destiny , in Rough Beasts of Empire .
- The ongoing TNG narrative really starts from the A Time to… series, but you could jump on from the first book set after Nemesis , Death in Winter . The other branch of TNG , Titan , gets going from Taking Wing .
- Voyager ‘s first post- Endgame stories start from Homecoming , but the series got something of a second start later with Full Circle .
- Enterprise ‘s post finale adventures begin from The Good That Men Do . This series also has secondary relaunch with the post Romulan War era in A Choice of Futures .
- While there isn’t such a solid ongoing narrative for TOS , 23rd century fans can start Vanguard from Harbinger . There is also a small run of TOS stories set after The Motion Picture , those start from Ex Machina .

The Almighty Star Trek Lit-verse Reading Order Flow Chart, Mark II!

I'm sure many of you are aware of Thrawn's fantastic flow chart to guide us through the interconnectivity of the lit-verse. That was made nearly a year ago, so it felt like time to make the next version, adding on the latest releases (and few not out yet), and adding in some more of the related older books, as well as finding room for New Frontier. Thrawn has been helping me refine the mark II, which has now been released onto the page on my blog where I host it . I hope you all continue to find it a useful guide. Thanks once again to Thrawn for creating it in the first place!

Re: The Almighty Star Trek Lit-verse Reading Order Flow Chart, Mark II Thank you for updating the Almighty Reading Order Flow Chart! It is useful to keep track of new novels and will also help me finding the right order when I start reading older series.

Re: The Almighty Star Trek Lit-verse Reading Order Flow Chart, Mark II This is really an awesome piece of work; much better than mine. 8of5 did a great job! This is the best community, I swear. I did monthly review threads with identical polls for a couple years - along comes Sho, taking all those, standardizing them, and writing a program to collect and compare them. Boom. I do a flowchart to explain some continuity concepts - along comes 8of5, to host and vastly improve it. You people are cool.

Re: The Almighty Star Trek Lit-verse Reading Order Flow Chart, Mark II I like the flow-chart, although I personally would've included more than a single direct 'link-line' from the DS9-R to its Typhon Pact continuations (RBoE, ZSG, PoN, and RtD) and placed the latter four in chronological order.

Re: The Almighty Star Trek Lit-verse Reading Order Flow Chart, Mark II Awesome work! Thrawn 's original flowchart helped me put together a chronological list of the novels because that's how I wanted to read them for some reason. It's nice to see someone take that chart and update/refine it further.

Lit-verse reading order flowchart, now even more almighty.
5 comments:
The Almighty Reading Order Flow Chart is terribly helpful to me for what to read next, and I love you for making (and continuing to remake) it! However, it's an Almighty Mess for suggesting how to organize all my Star Trek books on the shelves! How do you do it?
hahaha! Oh I know! I generally have a hybrid chronological order/series arrangement. So I try and keep the series in blocks, but also split them up in TV and movie eras, and books after major evens like Destiny and The Fall. Mine go like this: Enterprise, Pike era, TOS TV era, TOS move era, Lost Era, pre-TNG, TNG TV era, TNG movie era, DS9 TV era, Voyager TV era, New Frontier, SCE, early DS9 relaunch, first Voyager relaunch, A Time To... Articles, Titan, TNG relaunch, Destiny. Then I used Destiny as a new starting point, so I've got the various TNG, Titan and other books in more or less chronological order, the Voyager relaunch, Typhon Pact, DTI, Cold Equations, The Fall, post-The Fall books. !!!
LIKE! Keep it up!
I really appreciate yours and Thrawn's efforts in the initial development of it and even more so in keeping this chart updated. I refer to the chart quite often to see where a book I'm reading fits in. You both have done such a wonderful job and in my opinion the charts value is priceless. Kevin aka Ktrek

Star Trek Series
Star trek books in order.

Can you beat star trek's kobayashi maru test [flowchart].
Star Trek sees the release of a handy flowchart that begs the question of whether or not the layman can beat the Kobyashi Maru test.
Following the theatrical release of the generally well-received and box office topping Star Trek Beyond , all eyes are on the seminal science-fiction franchise - as the Gene Roddenberry created property continues on past its 50th birthday. With an all new, full-fledged Star Trek television series on the way courtesy of CBS All Access and chief showrunner Bryan Fuller ( Hannibal ), it would appear as though the property is aiming to keep up with other sci-fi franchises, stride-for-stride.
Now that the Kelvin Timeline has become an entity unto itself within the larger Star Trek canon, many casual viewers otherwise unfamiliar with the long-running series may just be getting acquainted with the larger collected works that make up the property's many featured crews of interstellar diplomats. Of the many facets of belonging to Roddenberry's original vision, none is perhaps more well known than the Kobyashi Maru no-win scenario field test designed to train Starfleet Academy officers in order to confront and resolve impossible situations. Now, a handy flowchart has just been created to test the layman's ability to confront a Kobyashi Maru in kind.
Courtesy of Lucidchart , a handy guide to navigating all of the circuitous ways in which one might attempt to resolve the Kobyashi Maru has just been provided, with plenty of clever allusions and callbacks to many of the more iconic moments and characters from the Star Trek series. With plenty of clever nods to the original origins of the classic moment first divulged in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan upon its theatrical release in 1982, this flowchart is sure to provide plenty of amusement for the more well read and novice Trekkie alike.
Check out the Kobyashi Maru flowchart below:
After reestablishing the classic Starfleet Academy examination in director J.J. Abrams' 2009 feature franchise reboot, the Kobyashi Maru has returned to the popular conscious among more people than your typical Star Trek shut-in. Even as the classic bit of science-fiction ephemera remains among the more nerdy facets of movie fandom, having a colorful flowchart to help guide the more unfamiliar viewer along the many winding paths of its convoluted logic may very well serve to bring a few more fans along for the ride as newly initiated Trekkies.
Justin Lin certainly made the franchise fun again with Star Trek Beyond , and with any luck Fuller will find commensurate success and acclaim when his Star Trek: Discovery premieres on CBS All Access early next year. With more and more viewers beginning to get back on board as fans of the larger science-fiction franchise, the Kobyashi Maru test may soon become a rite of passage among genre fans once more, making the flowchart featured above a "necessary" tool.

If you're a bit lost navigating the sometimes complex web of interconnectivity between the various Star Trek novels in the post-finale continuity, this is the resource you need. The complete Lit-verse consists of a continuity web of more than 1100 stories. That is approaching half of all Star Trek fiction ever published. It would definitely be enriched by prior books, as several threads flow into it; particularly the series The Fall, and the two prior Section 31 books, for Garak and Bashir's most immediate backstory (you could track their stories back much further than that, but that would be a good catch-up), plus Doctor Pulaski's arc from Brinkmanship via The ...
Data's Day and 11:59 have weird dates. Mosaic was 1 1/2 years after the doctor was activated. The Last Refuge 16 months after Prime Factors/State of Flux per author. Should I add years to this page since it's so long. A reading list for the entire Star Trek Lit-verse in chronological order.

The books were quite famous once the show gained popularity and Bantam Books republished Blish's books in three volumes one for each season. I would start with Star Trek Destiny by David Mack, or any of the novels by Peter David. These two authors are among the best, IMHO. You'll see what the trek novels can really do, that a series or movie could not. David writes during the original TNG episodes, and Destiny, takes place post-Voyager.
