Star trek tng: 10 things you didn't know about the theme song and intro.

Star Trek: The Next Generation's intro and theme song is iconic. If you want to know more about TNG's beginning, here's some facts and trivia.

From the moment your eyes settle on the vast expanse of stars, theĀ first ambient sounds hit your ears, and you hear the mellifluous voice of Sir Patrick Stewart's cadence reciting, "Space: the final frontier..." you prepare your senses for the first thrilling notes of one of the most recognizable theme songs of all time. With much fanfare, the theme forĀ  Star Trek: The Next GenerationĀ  sends your senses on an adventurous march through space, theĀ  Enterprise- D shooting across the title sequence with each blast from the brass, each flurry of the harp, and each pounding of the percussion.

Longtime Star Trek fans will recognize it as one of the franchise's most definitive pieces of music, able to instantly transport them to an emotional state of nostalgia. It's selection as the theme song for the first new Star Trek television series since the original premiered was not an easy one, mired by bureaucratic decision making and creative differences. Did you know there was also an alternate theme? Read on for 10 things you didn't know about theĀ  TNGĀ  Theme Song and Intro!

IT WAS TAKEN FROM STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE

For the first time in over ten years, the cast of the original Star Trek series came together to makeĀ  Star Trek: The Motion Picture.Ā  Released in 1979, it would feature the crew of the original USSĀ  EnterpriseĀ  being reassembled for another mission.

To capture the spirit of the original series, creator Gene Roddenberry wanted a rousing new theme song that would make audiences feel the pull to adventure of space exploration. He liked it so much, that he decided it would be used as the theme for the first new Star Trek series since the original,Ā  Star Trek: The Next Generation.

IT WAS WRITTEN BY A FAMOUS COMPOSER

The composer ofĀ  TNG'sĀ  soaring theme song was none other than Jerry Goldsmith, long renowned in Hollywood for his particularly bombastic and exciting scores. He went from being a humble clerk typist in the musical department at CBS in the '50s to writing some of the most famous theme songsĀ for film and television.

He wrote the original theme for the '60s spy seriesĀ  The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Ā  as well as blockbuster films like Poltergeist , Alien, Total Recall,Ā Airforce One,Ā  andĀ  The Mummy.Ā  His themes are atmospheric, full of percussion and horns, and have lots of character, making each one as unique as the other.

IT ALMOST NEVER HAPPENED

The theme song forĀ  TNGĀ  may have come out of the music forĀ  Star Trek: The Motion Picture,Ā  but it almost never happened. Goldsmith had started composing the music for the film and finished a section to be used when Admiral Kirk and Scotty fly over the refitĀ  Enterprise.

Director Robert Wise liked the sound he was creating, but ultimately had to reject it on the basis that it wasn't cohesive, and didn't have an overall "theme". So back Goldsmith went to the drawing board until he came up with the theme song we have today, used in not justĀ  Star Trek: The Next Generation Ā  but four other Star Trek films as well.

IT ALMOST SOUNDED LIKE A SUPERMAN RIP-OFF

When production first began onĀ  TNG,Ā  several themes were considered. They could either use the theme from the original series, by Alexander Courage, or they could compose something entirely new. The alternate version of the theme exists on Youtube and as you'll hear, sounds very different from the themeĀ  TNGĀ  ended up having.

The alternate theme sounds likeĀ  The Last Starfighter,Ā  with elements of Ā  SupermanĀ  and even a few fantasy films of the '70s and '80s. It has a swashbuckling feel, which definitely speaks to a call for adventure, but ultimately sounds a little too cheesy, almost like the theme for the fictitiousĀ  Galaxy QuestĀ  television show.

THE WORDS OF ITS TITLE SEQUENCE ARE SPECIFIC

Prior to the main theme starting up, the voice of Patrick Stewart, aka Captain Jean-Luc Picard can be heard over ambient music, just as Captain Kirk's voice could be heard prior to the theme of the original Star Trek series. They recite an introductory speech that is nearly identical, save for a few key phrases.

Picard's states, "Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. It's continuing mission: to explore strange new worlds. To seek out new life and new civilizations. To boldly go where no one has gone before!". "Continuing mission" was put in place of the "five-year mission" as stated in the original, and "where no one has gone before" replaced "where no man has gone before" as a more gender-neutral choice.

IT WAS INTENDED TO DRAW IN LONGTIME TREKKIES

As Star Trek: The Next GenerationĀ  was the first Star Trek television program in over two decades, it came at a time when longtime Trekkies were still used to seeing the cast of the original series in feature films. Producers didn't know how they would react to a new seriesĀ so they selected a theme song that would be recognizable to them.

RELATED:Ā  Star Trek: 10 Kirk Logic Memes That Are True And Hilarious

By using the theme song from the first Star Trek film, they hoped longtime Star Trek fans would be drawn into the show and give it a chance. By not using a new theme song, producers thought the new series wouldn't seem so alien to a skeptical audience.

IT CURTAILED HAVING TO PAY GENE RODDENBERRY ROYALTIES

Though Gene Roddenberry is credited as being Star Trek's creator, he's also been credited for almost causing its destruction. A polarizing figure in his own franchise like Star Wars creator George Lucas , he often felt that every decision he made was in the best interest of his creation when occasionally it only benefited him.

Case in point, when he felt that he wouldn't stand to make any profits off of the original series, he decided to compose lyrics for its themeĀ so that at least he would get 50 percent of the royalties for the writing credit. If Paramount used his theme (even without the lyrics) forĀ  TNGĀ  they'd have to pay him royalties.

LICENSING AND EXPENSES PLAYED A PART

When producers forĀ  TNGĀ  were discussing what theme to go with for the series, they had to be careful about licensing, rights, and ultimately expenses. They hadn't used the original series theme again composed by Alexander Courage because of the issues surrounding having to pay Gene Roddenberry writing credits as well, so they turned to another composer.

RELATED:Ā  Star Trek: The 10 Worst Things Data Has Ever Done

To commission a new piece of orchestral music at the time was going to be expensive. Hollywood composers operate at guild rates, and paying any of them for a new Star Trek show on an untested audience was a great risk, so recycling the theme song fromĀ  Star Trek: The Motion PictureĀ  was the least expensive and convoluted option.

IT WAS ALMOST USED FOR STAR TREK PHASE II

Prior to word ofĀ  TNGĀ  airing, there had been talk of doing another Star Trek series but involving the cast of the original series with a few new crew members. This was after the premiere ofĀ  Star WarsĀ  in 1977 when producers felt continuing to have Star Trek compete in the science fiction film arena was too risky.

Star Trek: Phase IIĀ  as it was referred to had already started the casting and writing process, but ultimately Paramount Studios decided to continue cranking out Star Trek films, beginning withĀ  Star Trek: The Motion PictureĀ  in 1979 where the theme song forĀ  TNGĀ  was first heard. Concepts for characters and storylines fromĀ  Phase IIĀ  would wind up inĀ  TNGĀ  as well.

THE INTRO HAS BEEN REMASTERED FOR BLU-RAY

If you're streamingĀ  TNGĀ  today on Netflix or Hulu, chances are you're watching it in the digitally remastered Blu-rayĀ glory it deserves. Even the beige interiors of the '90s sets look sharp and smart, and the bridge which once had all the charm of a hotel lobby now seems cleared for action.

All of the exterior shots of planets, the Milky Way, and the rest of the solar system in the Alpha Quadrant got their special effects beefed up as well. TheĀ  TNGĀ  intro got shiny new lettering, as well as all of its galactic splendor restored thanks to the highly qualified folks at Industrial Light and Magic.

Premieres at Comic Con – General release in August

The limited edition 3-CD set will debut at the San Diego Comic-Con, July 20-24, (housed in the Toy Hungry booth #429), and will later be made available on the La-La Land website ā€“ www.lalalandrecords.com , as well as other soundtrack online outlets, beginning August 2, 2011 (suggested retail price $34.98).

Def have to get me this one

Gotta get this CD!!!!

Although I don`t have the Ron Jones-Project, which I really regret, since I do own almost all CDs except the ones from original TREK – Hey, I grew up watching nextGen!

But Lalala Land Records has released some amazing Music over the years, most notably the BSG Soundtracks, the 3-Disk “Human Taget” Collection and of course the brilliant 2-Disk Extended Version of Goldsmith`s “Star Trek: V – The Final Frontier”.

I do own all extended an “complete” Soundtracks of TREK – so I have most of the CDs in “normal” versions and “longer” versions, like ST 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10 and STXI.

A funny sidenote: I bought John Debney`s Soundtrack to “SeaQuest DSV” months ago. While I listened to it, I tought:

“Hey this SeaQuest-Music sounds a LOT like TNG-scores!!!”

I did not know at all, that Debney had composed music for TNG! ha,ha,ha!!!

A CG generated Enterprise-D on the front, I notice. Maybe how it’ll look someday in CBS’ mooted TNG-R project?

Is this the real cover artwork? That would be interesting…

Well that is what La La Land sent us. Why the question?

http://www.thelightworks.com/images/gallery/wall/lrg/wp_startrek_1280_06.jpg

CG? Are you sure that’s not the opening shot from Farpoint? My brain doesn’t have a 1701-D encyclopedia like it does for the TOS ship.

Damn. I take THAT statement back.

tobias, ich habe das bild auch sofort erkannt :) – iĀ“ve recognized your pic, too

wusstest du nichts davon?

We need complete recordings from The Original Series. The are only a few episodes represented in commercial release. TOS music is the soul of original Trek.

Tobias, that sure does look like your rendering… pixel for pixel.

it’s a pretty difficult thing doing renditions of copyrighted stuff and putting it out on the net… I’ve had some of my stuff “pilfered” too… and it isn’t pleasant.

I bet they’d give you a copy of the set if you asked them… I bet that’s all they would have offered if they had asked you first, though… :)

Tobias: That does look identical to yours. I love the work on your site (used them as many a desktop background). Hope you’re able to get to the bottom of this mystery!!

I have put Tobias in touch with La La Land, I’m sure it will all work out

There is a lot of that going on, though… just because CG artists put stuff up on their sites for the enjoyment of people doesn’t mean it is fair game to be put onto packaging for paid products.

I’ve seen my Enterprise renderings out there on a bunch of things… most recently the poster for the Creation Convention in Las Vegas. I was never contacted for permission to use it…

Good Luck, Tobias…

Damn, you wake up one morning and possibly find your work stolen and put up for sale on the Internet.

…the best part of waking up…..

Has there been a change in things with GNP since the Ron Jones box? I notice this has music that has previously appeared on GNP discs (The cues from ‘All Good Things..’ which were on one of GNP’s Best of Star Trek CDs) whereas I remember hearing that Lukas couldn’t licence the Best of Both Worlds material that had appeared on GNP’s ST: TNG Vol.2 for the Ron Jones Project. It’d be great if this has been resolved, as not only could it mean some TOS sets (which need to be out there), but potentially an expanded/complete release of GENERATIONS.

Yes, why can’t we get TOS soundtracks released like this??

Nicely done release by the look of things, and agree with Charlie and Jeffrey that it would be great to get the TOS soundtracks released like this sometime!

However, one of my own biggest disappointments with the NEXT GEN series (and other subsequent ‘Trek’ series too), was it’s mainly unmemorable, bland music overall. Personally, I sure would have preferred the various atmospheric TOS cues to have been re-used throughout the OTHER ‘Trek’ series that came afterwards too.

By the way Charlie, I also agree that an expanded/complete release of Dennis McCarthy’s GENERATIONS score would be neat, as it was the best thing to come out of the movie! Some terrific music in that, I reckon.

By the way, very nice rendering of the NEXT GEN ‘Enterprise’ there Tobias.

Will be getting this if I’m quick enough :) Anthony, will there be an update on Trekmovie when the set becomes available on the Lalalands website or other CD retailers?

Not artwork…line notes.

Get In….now, when do we get the full score for Generations??? Come on, its lurking around somewhere!!!

Glad this got a review- why No mention of the new Star Trek Comics Omnibus- “Movie Classics” ?

RE: ILM Encounter at Farpoint model shoot vs CG art

No doubting my eyesight. I should’ve been the look-out boy on the Titanic. :)

RE: Darmok: “Doo Doo Occurs” –OKAY…I officially now miss Giacchino’s bad puns from the 2009 Trek film Soundtrack. Even they are genius compared to “Doo Doo Occurs” LOL

Well, it looks interesting, and I may have to get this just to find out about this:

“Star Trek (TOS) Polka Version”?

I’m no expert but for those asking about TOS boxsets, Trek music guru Jeff Bond chimed in around this time last year and mentioned that there were “issues” to be worked out. The guys who run these labels know there’s a demand but there are probably a thousand and one things that have to happen first.

I went a bit crossed trying to read the whole tracklisting, is the iconic Best of Both Worlds cliffhanger music not there? I mean, come on!

^Bucky –

I believe that track is already available on GNP Crescendo’s “Best of Both Worlds” disc.

A lot of Season 1 and 2 music, I notice. That’s a good sign — TNG music was allowed to be surprisingly rousing early on.

I’ll take Ron Jones over the rest of the “wallpaper” scores any day. Cool that it’s available though. (Hope Tobias can get it straightened out! Been There!)

$34.98? I’d feel like a *thief* buying a gem like this at $34.98!

Well let me chime in, too, about wanting a TOS boxed set of soundtracks. Most of TNG music is boring and bland, but there are exceptions. So come on LaLaLand, how about some TOS music?!?

darendoc, too bad about Creation “borrowing” your work.

I’d rather the followup be DS9, which had some excellent music in its later series.

Hmm… I dunno… too bad cause and effect is not on here.

Are there any tracks from Paul Baillargeon who composed also for DS9, Voy and Ent?

OOPs my bad… Paul Baillargeon only started with DS9…

I agree with Cervantes. While the music on all the NG series was serviceable, only the themes are distinctive, with the Goldsmith’s ranking (TNG, VOY) at the top. it’s too bad the mandate from the top was to not develop themes for the characters, because that would have made all these series more interesting to me and way better than they are.

  • Trivia When the cast decided to lobby for a salary increase, Wil Wheaton 's first offer from the producers was to instead have his character promoted to Lieutenant. His response was, "So what should I tell my landlord when I can't pay my rent? 'Don't worry, I just made Lieutenant'?!"
  • Goofs It is claimed that Data can't use contractions (Can't, Isn't, Don't, etc) yet there are several instances throughout the series where he does. One of the first such examples is heard in Encounter at Farpoint (1987) , where Data uses the word "Can't" while the Enterprise is being chased by Q's "ship".

Capt. Picard : Engage!

  • Crazy credits The model of the Enterprise used in the opening credits is so detailed, a tiny figure can be seen walking past a window just before the vessel jumps to warp speed.
  • Alternate versions The first and last episodes were originally broadcast as two-hour TV movies, and were later re-edited into two one-hour episodes each. Both edits involved removing some scenes from each episode.
