Toby Keith's 3 Children Attend 2024 CMT Awards Ahead of Tribute Performance Honoring Their Late Father

Shelley Covel Rowland, Krystal Keith and Stelen Keith Covel stepped out to the awards show after the "As Good as I Once Was" singer died at age 62 in February

Toby Keith 's children are honoring his memory at the 2024 CMT Awards .

On Sunday, April 7, the late 13-time CMT Award winner's three children — Shelley Covel Rowland, Krystal Keith and Stelen Keith Covel — walked the red carpet ahead of the ceremony honoring the brightest stars in country music.

Later in the evening, Toby, who died of stomach cancer on Feb. 5 at age 62, will be honored with a tribute performance featuring Brooks & Dunn, Lainey Wilson and Sammy Hagar as well as members of Toby's beloved band, plus Lukas Nelson and former MLB star Roger Clemens.

In a red carpet interview with CMT, Stelen, 27, spoke about feeling as though his father would be honored to see so many of his friends come together in celebration of his life and career.

"I think he'd be really excited," Stelen said of the tribute performance. "He's made some amazing music throughout his career, and it's amazing we get to see that come to fruition, and see his due given."

Krystal, 38, added that it's gratifying to see people appreciate the full breadth of her father's career.

"He was a genius in music, and people are starting to see that now," said Krystal. "I think people thought he was just an artist, but they're learning he was so much more than that," Krystal said.

Toby's death came nearly three years after he was diagnosed with stomach cancer in 2021, and the loss prompted an outpouring of love from the country music community and his children alike.

Following his death, Krystal paid tribute to her dad with a carousel of photos on Instagram . "I am shattered," she wrote at the time. "As great as he was in his career, he was so much greater as a dad and a husband and a Pop Pop. He was my hero."

The mom of two went on to share how grateful she was for the time she had with her father, continuing, "I am so lucky to have had him and so grateful he got to walk me down the aisle and meet my babies. That I have years of memories traveling the world as a family. I am blessed that I got to spend years traveling on the road and singing on stage with him. That I have mountains of video footage and endless tracks of music to watch him on and hear his voice with."

Stelen shared his own tribute on Instagram at the time and called his father "my guiding star."

Bruce Springsteen and Steven Van Zandt at the Bruce Springsteen And The E Street Band concert held at the Kia Forum on April 4, 2024 in Los Angeles, California.

But “Wrecking Ball” remains a key moment in his set, not for how sentimental it makes us feel about basketball barns, but for how it makes us feel about us, its true intended subject. Like a lot of the standby songs and commentaries on his 2023 tour and now (following a sick-day pause) the ‘24 outing, this particular standout has to do with his most recurring theme of recent years, live and on record: the thin veil between life and death. In Springsteen’s advanced view of mortality, we’re all dumps-that-jump, in a manner of thinking. And he’s come back from enforced hiatus to throw us the best party, or wake, we could possibly have.

Springsteen hasn’t spoken so much publicly about the condition that took him off the road for six months, and which caused these particular L.A. dates to be postponed for four. But something about his first Forum show Thursday caused him to get a little bit chattier about the malady.

“We’re sorry we missed you last time,” he said during a spoken interlude in the middle of an epic version of “Tenth Avenue Freezeout,” being performed as the show’s penultimate number  after the setlist had already passed the three-hour point. “I hope we didn’t put you out too much. But, man,” he elaborated, “I had the worst motherfucking bellyache you could ever imagine.”

“When I sang, my belly ached,” he said.

“When I did anything, my belly ached,” he continued.

Bruce Springsteen has fire in the belly. Lucky for him and everyone else, it’s back to being a fire that does not consume.

At a length of three hours and 20 minutes, Springsteen’s opening Forum show pretty much set the bar for not gentle into that good Thursday night. Its 200-minute running time was 40 minutes longer than most other sets of his lately, all of which already test and transcend what a guy in his early 70s who recently recovered from illness ought to be pulling off. It’s reductive, though, to focus too much on the running time, which makes it feel like an endurance test or marathon. Yes, every minute added onto a show beyond the tour mean confers some kind of badge of pride on attendees, and it’s great fun to start doing the numbers as a show begins to expand… but the miracle is not just that he endures.

The miracle is that he bobs and weaves with a dynamic setlist that needs that much expansiveness to sufficiently cover multiple moments of sorrow or grief and “Twist and Shout” (should you be so lucky to get that bonus track as a celebration of life, as Thursday’s crowd did).

As fans have already noted during these first few weeks of the 2024 touring resumption, the setlists tend to be only about 75% set in stone. That’s to say, they’re much looser than when the E Street Band hit the road again in 2023, closer to how they used to be in legendary days of yore. For anyone who likes to go to more than one show on a tour, or just for anybody who enjoys knowing they’re in the presence of some free-spiritedness, this flexibility is a godsend.

Given that the surprises each night are added onto the surety of some of the most powerful song sequences he’s ever constructed for a tour, a 2024 Bruce Springsteen show is really something that gives “overstuffed” a good name.

Most of his shows on this show have opened with “Lonesome Day,” which is nearly an overture for the conflicted lyrical feelings that will come up in the emotionally dynamic hours to come. But occasionally he’ll start off with a ringer in advance even of that opener. Thursday, it was a cover of John Lee Hooker’s “Boom Boom,” which ain’t nothing but primal — the blues as filtered through a “Nuggets” sensibility. He hadn’t done this oldie since 2016, which augured well for tour premieres and oddities.

Would an oldie this obscure count among the highlights of a three-hour-plus set that includes an inordinate amount of the best rock songs ever written? On the face of it, no. Or yes, for that segment of fans that lives for the idea of audibles being called.

The biggest surprise of the night: the return of Patti Scialfa, who performed on a few 2023 shows and then disappeared from public view. (“Where’s Patti?” isn’t quite up there with “Where’s Shelly?,” but it still remained a question.) Now we knew, without the FBI being called in: His bride is just living her post-E-Street life, happy to show up for a cameo instead of being tied to a recurring gig. “My baby’s back!,” Springsteen exclaimed, kicking off the first of two numbers the couple performed as a team. The recently rare “Tougher Than the Rest” featured Scialfa leaning in close on their single mic for harmony, followed by “Fire.” That number, Springsteen said, hadn’t been played “in a long time. We did do it on Broadway,” he clarified, but “Patti’s never done it.” By which he possibly meant never performed it as a full-on duet; his wife unexpectedly got the first verse of this ‘70s perennial all to herself. (Patti as a Pointer Sister, to name the group that really made the song famous? Live long enough, and all sorts of things can happen.)

The bones of the set were otherwise mostly intact. “Prove It All Night” follows “Lonesome Day” at the beginning, as a promise. But sometimes it seems like rock ‘n’ roll’s power as an elixir won’t be enough, if you’re reallly following how an underlying narrative develops.

“Ghosts” and “Letter to You,” both from the album of the latter name, overtly introduce the theme of loss, so often returned to. Then the mournful hits keep coming, as pointed segues. “My City of Ruins,” whose “Rise up” chorus barely disguises just how sad it is, goes in for more than 10 minutes, with cheerful chatter, as Bruce introduces the band, followed by bittersweet moments dedicated to the group’s fallen members. That in memoriam segued into a cover of the Commodores’ ‘80s hit “Nightshift,” which pays homage to soul music’s lost ‘60s and ‘70s greats, including Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson.

The soul memorial led into “Last Man Standing,” his song about realizing he was the last surviving member of his original band — a song so solemn it’s performed just by Springsteen and a solitary trumpeter, who might as well be playing “Taps.” From there, much of the crowd is relieved to hear Springsteen singing something as light as “Backstreets”… or is it? “Until the end… until the end…,” he sang, drawing one line out into a chant. It’s a “Born to Run”-based suite that has finally, after 49 year, turned into the requiem it was apparently always meant to be.

And then, as this emotionally fraught show drew closer to a close, we got the Three Stooges. That is, during the go-for-broke joy of “Rosalita,” there was a moment when the otherwise stone-faced Little Steven Van Zandt drew close to Springsteen and they indulged in some Larry, Curly and Moe-style face-poking, prodding, mugging and noise-making.

Springsteen has put on a tour that is the most bittersweet show on earth, until it finally settles for being the happiest, and occasionally even goofiest… and then turns heartbreaking again for the final encore. The most abrupt segue might be the final one, when, having climaxed with “Tenth Avenue” and (on this particular night) “Twist and Shout,” he sent the rest of the band off to their sleep while he serenaded the crowd with a completely solo number, “I’ll See You in My Dreams,” boldly sending the audience out thinking again about loved ones they’ve lost, if with a ballad that feels like a comforting lullaby. By the end of the show, he’s kept all these things in balance enough that any of these notes feel like they could be an honest place to land, whether it’s with an Isley Brothers tent revival or a heart-rending ode to creating memories as a means of cheating death.

Given his stage mastery, was it possible Springsteen was moving even himself with this show? It’s probably risky i to parse exactly what emotions a showman this great might be spontaneously feeling. The most deeply emotional moments are deeply baked into the tour. As always, he gave the much-quoted speech about his old friend and bandmate George Theiss’ passing, about the clarity that death brings the living. This should be rote for Springsteen by now, given how little variation he introduces into the homily, as he retells it. Yet his closed eyes looked moist enough as he eulogized his teenaged soulmate once again Thursday night. Honestly, it could also just have been perspiration (even though his face didn’t look that sweaty in the closeups seen on the two big screens for the rest of the show).

Either way, sweat or tears, it was working, like it’s always worked for a few generations now. “You’ll need a good companion for this part of the ride,” Springsteen sang toward the end of the show in “Land of Hope of Dreams,” part of the tumult of climactic numbers. Maybe he didn’t mean that line as an actual rock ‘n’ roll direct-sales pitch at the time he wrote it, but he sure keeps living up to it.

Jelly Roll snags top honor of Video of the Year for 'Need a Favor'

The top — and final award of the night at the 2024 CMT Music Awards, Video of the Year, went to Jelly Roll for the video "Need a Favor"

The category included Cody Johnson, Jelly Roll and Kelsea Ballerini.

Presented by actor Billy Bob Thornton, after opening the envelope, he said, "Oh my God! Jelly Roll, come on up here."

Jelly Roll accepted the trophy, saying, "Billy Bob Thornton just gave me my third trophy of the night, y'all!" Jelly Roll won awards for Male Video of the Year and Performance of the Year earlier in the night.

He went on to thank his competitor and friend Cody Johnson, "I love you brother, you are my favorite cowboy." He gave a nod to Ballerini as well saying, "Kelsea Ballerini, you go baby!"

Since Jelly Roll also gave the final live performance of the night, before taking the stage, he said, "Gayle King, I'm gonna be a little late in the morning, cause we're gonna party!"

Brooks & Dunn, Sammy Hagar, Lainey Wilson perform musical tribute to late Toby Keith

Rocker Sammy Hagar, wearing a Toby Keith t-shirt, told the crowd at the CMT Awards, "Toby and I, we spent a lot of time in Cabo together over the years. We closed the Cabo Wabo down a lot more times than we remember. It’s hard to get thrown out of your own bar and we managed to do that."

Hagar then sang Keith's hit, "I Love This Bar."

Hagar was one of three performers tapped to pay a musical tribute to the late Toby Keith including Brooks & Dunn, who sang "Shoulda Been a Cowboy," and Lainey Wilson who performed "How Do You Like Me Now?"

Holding red Solo cups in honor of another Keith song, the crowd (and performers) raised their cups and sang along.

Famed baseball pitcher Roger Clemens, who introduced the tribute, returned to the stage at the end and asked the crowd chant "Whiskey for my men and beer for my horses." He teared up as he thanked Keith's widow and his children for sharing their dad with the world.

Toby Keith, known for his country hit "Should've Been a Cowboy,"  died in February after battling stomach cancer .

Sam Hunt channels Johnny Cash in performance of 'Locked Up'

A clean-cut Sam Hunt hit the stage to perform his new song "Locked Up" at the 2024 CMT Music Awards. Wearing a black suit and white dress shirt, Hunt brought some “Folsom Prison Blues” vibes to the CMT stage.

Prior to the show, Hunt said that Nashville has changed a lot as a city in the past couple years. He said that different groups have "siloed off," and that he doesn’t get to get together with his music pals as often as he likes. To him, the awards are an opportunity to come together as a community again.

"For that reason, I'm excited about being here tonight," he said. "Just to feel a part of the community again."

"Luckily  we're drawing from a video we've already done  for a song that I put out last week called 'Locked Up.' It was sort of meant to be a callback, a nod, to Johnny Cash's concert at Folsom Prison. That's what we're going for," he added.

"We have some local guys who are playing inmates. We got the guard and the cage. All the guys are dressin' up in their black suits. We're gon' just try to recreate the video."

Keith Urban performs new song 'Straight Line'

Country superstar Keith Urban has performed at the most CMT Music Awards of all artists. And this year, he hit the stage at the 2024 awards again to perform his song "Straight Line" live for the very first time.

"It's the first time I've done it on any award show," Urban told the USA Today Network prior to the show. He bulked up his band and added more percussion and backing vocals to "ring out other elements of the song" and lean into the dance, rhythmic blue grass song.

Before he hit the stage, Urban said his goal for the performance was: "Energy and truth and raw and real and right in front of you."

The song is one of the two singles Urban has released off of his new album which will be releasing in the fall. The other single, "Messed Up As Me," released in February.

Before their performance on the CMT Awards, Jordan Davis and NEEDTOBREATHE hit the stage in Austin

Before taking the CMT Music Awards stage Sunday night, country singer Jordan Davis and rock band NEEDTOBREATHE hit the stage together at UT Austin's campus for a live taping of the show "CMT Crossroads," the network's longest-running music series. For the show, two artists from different genres come together on stage to perform each other’s hits.

The "Crossroads" taping comes before another anticipated live performance from Davis and NEEDTOBREATHE at Sunday's CMT Awards.

Building up excitement for the CMT Awards, Jordan Davis—known for songs "Buy Dirt" and "Next Thing You Know"—sang with NEEDTOBREATHE's frontman Bear Rinehart, tossing vocals back and forth between one another or singing in harmony.

An air date has not yet been announced for Davis and NEEDTOBREATHE's "Crossroads" special.

Kelsea Ballerini reads minds for CMT Awards opening monologue bit

Host Kelsea Ballerini had a little fun in her opening monologue after cutting to footage of her at The Grammys and asking, “Did you see me?” The footage was of her reaction when she lost to Lainey Wilson.

“Sometimes the camera just cuts to you and then people interpret your facial expression like they are reading your mind,” she told the crowd.

She then said it would be fun to read the minds of some of the stars in the audience. She cut to Lainey Wilson, Carly Pearce and Tricia Yearwood, Keith Urban and her boyfriend, Chace Stokes.

“Who wouldn’t love to read their boyfriend’s mind?” she asked.

The camera cut to Stokes while a pre-recorded audio played of him saying “First she slides into my DMs, then she starts reading my mind...”

Another funny cut was to Keith Urban, whose audio said “I thought I was going to be seated next to JellyRoll. I’m so mad,” as the camera panned out and revealed Urban was seated next to the mascot from Buc’ees. Urban’s audio then played “No I’m not, this is awesome,” as he hugged Buc’ee.

Cody Johnson opens the CMT Awards with a bang

Cody Johnson set the tone for the CMT Music Awards with an explosive opening performance of his hit song “That’s Texas.”

Wearing a button down shirt, white cowboy hat and gold belt buckle behind his acoustic guitar, the three-time CMT Music Award winner ripped through a raucous version of the Texas anthem for a Texas crowd in Austin.

He told The Tennessean before taking the stage that he wanted his performance to be “electric.”

“This is the first time we’ve ever had pyrotechnics on the stage and I like it because it sets the tone,” he said. “It’s a celebration. It’s energetic. Let’s all have fun tonight. I get to go a little wild on stage and hopefully make a few people a little nervous to perform after me.”

Midway through the song, Johnson grabbed his mic and made his way out to a stage further out in the crowd.

Ending with pyros, host Kelsea Ballerini began her monologue with, “How bout Cody Johnson, y’all? That is the way to kick it off in Texas.”

By Geordon Wollner

For those who still haven’t cut the cord, here is a selection of cable and network TV shows, movies and specials that broadcast this week, April 8-14. Details and times are subject to change.

THE GREEN MILE (1999) 7 p.m. on AMC. Based on the 1999 Stephen King novel of the same name, this three-hour-plus film tells a somber tale of the death row warden Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks) who meets an enigmatic inmate, John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan) — a gentle giant with healing powers that border on the supernatural.

ELTON JOHN & BERNIE TAUPIN: THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS GERSHWIN PRIZE FOR POPULAR SONG TRIBUTE CONCERT 8 p.m. on PBS (check local listings). The songwriting duo of Elton John and Bernie Taupin are the recipients of the 2024 Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, awarded by the Library of Congress. To honor their achievements, a tribute concert held in Washington D.C. will be held with performances by Metallica, Garth Brooks, Annie Lennox, Joni Mitchell — last year’s honoree — and more.

THE GOONIES (1985) 6 p.m. on E! When a band of misfit neighborhood kids finds a treasure map to the fabled treasure of an infamous pirate known as One-Eyed Willy, a zany adventure unfolds as they race to find gold to save their homes from foreclosure. Will the Goonies find what they’ve been searching for before the Fratellis, a crime family hot on their tail, get their grubby mitts on the priceless jewels? Will their coastal town be saved from destruction? Faced with treacherous traps, secret caves and no shortage of nail-biting moments, repeat after me: “Goonies never say die!”

THE GODFATHER (1972) 8 p.m. on TCM. “ I’m gonna make him an offer he can’t refuse.” Never has a string of words — spoken by Don Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando) — weighed so heavily onscreen. Despite his age and jowls, the head of the Corleone family “remains a fearsome, rudely magnificent creature,” Vincent Canby wrote in his review for The New York Times. Family duty. Questionable honor. A son reluctant to take up the throne. This classic has it all, plus many more lines that linger in your ears: “Leave the gun, take the cannoli.”

GHOST ADVENTURES: HOUSE CALLS 10 p.m. on Discovery. Join an intrepid team of paranormal investigators, Zak Bagans, Aaron Goodwin, Jay Wasley and Billy Tolley, as they document the homes of people who claim they’re plagued with unwanted, unexplained paranormal activity.

LADY MACBETH (2016) 7:15 p.m. on STARZ. Set in 19th-century rural England, a young woman (Florence Pugh) is sold into a loveless marriage and, after growing bored of being silenced and untouched, finds herself passionately enraptured in an affair with a young man (Cosmo Jarvis) on her husband’s estate. This adaptation of “Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk,” an 1865 novella by Nikolai Leskov, exemplifies the power of newfound liberation as “carnal lust slips into bloodlust,” Manohla Dargis wrote in her review for The Times .

WHEEL OF FORTUNE 7:30 on ABC. Whether you’re trying to figure out the best strategy to solve a bonus round puzzle or brushing up on your vocabulary, tune into another episode of this vowel-slinging game show that has been on-air for over 40 years. Pat Sajak, who will retire as host after this season , has become a household name over its run, as has Vanna White, the show’s co-host. Need a vowel?

THE ZONE OF INTEREST (2023) 8 p.m. on HBO. Summer 1943. German-occupied Poland. A mother of five, Hedwig (Sandra Hüller), builds a dream home and life, as her husband, the commandant of Auschwitz, Rudolf Höss (Christian Friedel), reports to the camp that sits just beyond the garden wall. Loosely based on the 2014 novel by Martin Amis , this film creates an illusion of perfection and idyllic bliss, while unimaginable horrors unfold mere steps from the family’s front door. “The Zone of Interest” was awarded Best Sound and Best International Feature Film at the Oscars this year.

GREY GARDENS (1975) 10:30 p.m. on TCM. Edith Ewing Bouvier Beale and her daughter, Edith Bouvier Beale — otherwise known as Big and Little Edie — are the eccentric, reclusive duo who are the subjects of this documentary. Relatives of Jacqueline Kennedy, they live in Grey Gardens, a ramshackle mansion in East Hampton, where they show off their daily “costumes” and recount tales of lovers of years past. Cats and raccoons crawl across faded photographs and rotting floors, as memories pile high.

THE 100TH: BILLY JOEL AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN 9 p.m. on CBS. Billy Joel will air his 100th consecutive performance at Madison Square Garden live. “I don’t think of myself as a singer,” he recently told The Times . “I’m a piano player.” His Garden series wraps in July 2024, with his 104th show, which will be his 150th lifetime performance at the celebrated venue.
