Tasmanian Wonders

AAT Kings Best Buys

There’s little of the Apple Isle you won’t experience on this full tour of Tasmania. This is an experience spanning Tasmania’s charming cities, World Heritage-listed sites and humbling wilderness – much of it (the Tarkine, Cradle Mountain, Gordon River) along the wild West Coast. When you’re not gazing over Australia’s best beaches in the east (Wineglass Bay regularly takes the honour), opportunities abound to indulge in regional produce – whiskey, wine or oysters.

Tasmanian Wonders

AATKings logo

Hobart, Strahan, Cradle Mountain, Smithton, Launceston, Bicheno

From the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area to Port Arthur Historic Site, World Heritage-listed attractions steal the scene on this Tasmania tour encircling the state. In between are atmospheric towns and innovative producers, plus Cradle Mountain tours and Freycinet adventures. Steel yourself for 10 days of wonderment.

tasmanian wonders tour

The Tasmanian capital of Hobart may be small in size, but it’s big in attractions, as you’ll discover this afternoon. Put your destination into perspective from the summit of Mt. Nelson, offering endless vistas over Australia’s southernmost city. View the charming Georgian cottages of Battery Point and explore the cobbled streets and convict built warehouses along Salamanca Place, the backdrop of epic Saturday markets. Visit the waterfront area including Constitution Dock where the yachts finish when competing in the annual Sydney to Hobart race, and take a stroll in the second oldest Botanical Gardens in Australia with its amazing collection of plants from around the world.

Western Tasmania is like nature writ large, a place where the wilderness rules and people are few and far between. Visiting Mount Field National Park is a humbling experience, not only for the fact it’s part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, but also because it’s home to some of the tallest eucalypts and tallest flowering plants on Earth. Wander amid these giants to reach Russell Falls – take a deep breath; your Tasmania tour has begun. Records continue to be broken at Lake St. Clair, the deepest freshwater Lake in Australia, before you arrive in Strahan, gateway to World Heritage-listed Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park.

The Gordon River is your playground today, the dark waters here given their colour by amber button-grass tannins. The only thing breaking the mirror-like surface is your chariot as you cruise through Hells Gates, the treacherous entrance to the harbour before returning to Sarah Island, a former penal colony where convicts would fell Huon pines for boat building. Disembark at Heritage Landing to view one of these 500 year old majestic trees. From Strahan motor on towards Cradle Mountain. This evening you can choose to visit some Tasmanian Devils at a sanctuary, or head out to spot wombats, wallabies, pademelons or maybe an elusive quoll who all call this wilderness home.

Today has multiple highs – quite literally. The first is the 1,545-metre Cradle Mountain, your backdrop as you wander to Dove Lake and explore this ancient national park. The second high is ‘The Nut’, a dramatic 152-metre plateau created by the remains of an ancient volcanic plug. It guards over Stanley, a tiny village with swagger to spare. You could spend days exploring the town’s remarkably well-preserved heritage buildings. But more Tasmania holiday highlights await around the corner.

If there’s a town with a cuter name than Penguin, we’re yet to find it. Locals embrace its appeal – there are penguin sculptures at every turn, including one measuring over 3 metres tall. Your journey along the northwest coast also passes through Burnie, Ulverstone and Sheffield, The Town of Murals, boasting over 100 large paintings depicting the area’s rich history and local characters. All this exploring builds an appetite. Refuel at Ashgrove Tasmanian Farm, where happy cows contribute to award-winning cheeses – everything from cheddar and red Leicester to creamy Tasmanian blue.

There are few places in the world where you can leave the city behind and within minutes be amid an immense wilderness area. Launceston is one. Blink and you’re at Cataract Gorge, a yawning chasm carved by ancient rivers. This rare natural phenomenon unites bushland with neat Victorian gardens, replete with ferns and exotic plants. Get a different perspective of the green cavern on the scenic chairlift, zipping you over the water to a lofty lookout. We wouldn’t blame you for lingering here, perhaps to venture deeper into the gorge. Or sample further afield with a selection of optional experiences. This afternoon, the choice is yours.

You’ll smell Bridestowe before you see it, this enormous lavender farm perfuming the Tasmanian countryside. The flowers grown here aren’t just used in fragrances – they’re also infused into ice-cream, teas and jams. It’s a tasty entrée to the Legerwood Carved Memorial Trees, sculpted into World War One soldiers. Little penguins come out to play in Bicheno; sign up to spot them after dark as they waddle to shore from the water.

The colours at Freycinet National Park are so vivid you’ll think someone has taken the glasses off your nose and cleaned them for the first time: The patchwork of ocean blues that lap Coles Bay and Wineglass Bay. The dramatic pink granite cliffs. There’s a reason why Freycinet adventures star on postcards. The other place on postcards is Richmond, its grand 1820s Georgian buildings today home to bijou boutiques, galleries and cafes that appear to be lost in time

The Isle of the Dead, Devil’s Kitchen, the Blowhole, Tasman Arch and Eagle Hawk Neck, just some of the remarkable natural attractions found on the Tasman Peninsula, home also to Port Arthur where you’ll be emersed in the region’s notoriously harsh history. This is the best-preserved convict site in Australia, and among the most significant convict-era destinations worldwide. The stories these walls could tell.

It took early explorers months to circumnavigate Tasmania. You’ve completed your Tasmania tour in just 10 days. What a wild ride.

See Hells Gates, the treacherous entrance to the harbour, and Heritage Landing, site of a 2,000-year-old Huon Pine. Travel through the mining towns of Rosebery and Tullah on your way to your hotel.

Staying in:

  • Best Western Hobart (1 night)

Russell Falls

  • Strahan Village (1 night)

Strahan Port

  • Cradle Mountain Hotel (1 night)

Cradle Mountain National Park

Today has multiple highs – quite literally. The first is the 1,545-metre Cradle Mountain, your backdrop as you wander to Dove Lake and explore this ancient national park. The second high is ‘The Nut’, a dramatic 152-metre plateau created by the remains of an ancient volcanic plug. It guards over Stanley, a tiny village with swagger to spare. You could spend days exploring the town’s remarkably well-preserved heritage buildings. But more Tasmania holiday highlights await around the corner.

  • Tall Timbers (1 night)

Launceston Town

  • Best Western Plus Launceston (1 night)

Cataract Gorge

St Helens Coast

You’ll smell Bridestowe before you see it, this enormous lavender farm perfuming the Tasmanian countryside. The flowers grown here aren’t just used in fragrances – they’re also infused into ice-cream, teas and jams. It’s a tasty entrée to the Legerwood Carved Memorial Trees, sculpted into World War One soldiers. Little penguins come out to play in Bicheno; sign up to spot them after dark as they waddle to shore from the water.

  • Beachfront at Bicheno (1 night)

Freycinet National Park

The colours at Freycinet National Park are so vivid you’ll think someone has taken the glasses off your nose and cleaned them for the first time: The patchwork of ocean blues that lap Coles Bay and Wineglass Bay. The dramatic pink granite cliffs. There’s a reason why Freycinet adventures star on postcards. The other place on postcards is Richmond, its grand 1820s Georgian buildings today home to bijou boutiques, galleries and cafes that appear to be lost in time

Port Arthur Historic Site

The Isle of the Dead, Devil’s Kitchen, the Blowhole, Tasman Arch and Eagle Hawk Neck, just some of the remarkable natural attractions found on the Tasman Peninsula, home also to Port Arthur where you’ll be emersed in the region’s notoriously harsh history. This is the best-preserved convict site in Australia, and among the most significant convict-era destinations worldwide. The stories these walls could tell.

View of Hobart Harbour

It took early explorers months to circumnavigate Tasmania. You’ve completed your Tasmania tour in just 10 days. What a wild ride.

Tasmania / Lutruwita

Take a bite of the Apple Isle and you'll wish you had more time to discover an untamed natural paradise at the remote edge of the earth – a land of hidden valleys, prehistoric rainforest and craggy coastlines that reveal testaments to an ancient past. The island of Tasmania is home to just 500,000 people and not only the most beautiful beach lined coasts but World Heritage-listed mountains which can be driven between in just a few hours.

The wonders of nature await on your Tassie adventure, from the vivid hues of the Southern Lights to the tantrums of the Tasmanian Devil. Spot the Tasmanian Devil on our  Tasmanian Wonders  trip and know that your holiday contributes directly to the Save the Devil Foundation, with AAT Kings donating annually to the protection of the iconic Australian marsupial.

Delve into Tasmania's convict history, the fascinating stories of its indigenous people and the creative verve of a capital fringed by ‘The Mountain'. There are many World Heritage-listed penitentiary buildings around Tasmania to tell the history of convict life in the 19th century with the most notorious being in the coastal Port Arthur.

Throughout our trips in Lutruwita/Tasmania we offer full culturally immersive experiences. Travellers will gain a deeper understanding of early settlers in Sheffield through the murals painted in town, delve deep into historic Port Arthur guided by a local historian and visit Sarah Island for an insight into a relic of Tasmania's convict history. Lutruwita/Tasmania also offers some of the most authentic culinary experiences, from whisky distilleries,  and award-winning cheese institutions to wineries, AAT Kings will ensure you enjoy fresh local Tasmanian produce on all our trips.  An extravaganza of delicious foodie flavours, country charm and captivating heritage awaits.

NITA Education

Nita Education provides Tasmanian Aboriginal cultural experiences across Tasmania. Owners Trish and Craig are proud palawa (Tasmanian Aboriginal) people, both descending from Manalargenna, Chief of the North East. Delve deep into the local Aboriginal culture with a welcome to country on the shores of the Derwent River followed by a traditional smoking ceremony (weather permitting) and a walk with your hosts around this culturally significant area where they will show you some bush tucker and where you’ll learn about their history spanning at least 2000 generations!  This enterprise provides opportunities for Tasmanian aboriginals (palawa) to share their ancient stories with visitors and ensuring not only that guests leave with a deeper understanding of this culture but also that these stories continue to be passed down through the generations. This opportunity of course also provides much needed jobs within the community.

Explore New Zealand with these great holiday ideas

Staying in:

  • Best Western Hobart (1 night)

Russell Falls

  • Strahan Village (1 night)

Strahan Port

Cataract Gorge

Bicheno Blowhole

You’ll smell Bridestowe before you see it, this enormous lavender farm perfuming the Tasmanian countryside. The flowers grown here aren’t just used in fragrances – they’re also infused into ice-cream, teas and jams. It’s a tasty entrée to the Legerwood Carved Memorial Trees, sculpted into World War One soldiers. Little penguins come out to play in Bicheno; sign up to spot them after dark as they waddle to shore from the water.

Tasmanians still waiting for Liberal minority deal to be inked

Tasmanians have been left scratching their heads for weeks after the Premier announced a deal had been signed only for it to be called into question shortly after.

’Perfect storm’: Risk in fight for ScoMo seat

A deal or no deal – that’s the question Tasmanians have been left with after an independent contradicted the Premier shortly after he publicly announced an arrangement had been clinched.

Jeremy Rockliff has spent the past three weeks wooing the crossbench after the Liberals failed to secure the numbers at the election to govern in their own right.

Speaking on radio on Friday morning, the Premier declared he’d received a written, and signed, assurance of “supply and confidence” from independent David O’Byrne.

“We can now move forward of course and have a parliament that is workable, that listens to everyone’s ideas, but provides that certainty and stability that Tasmanians want,” he told ABC Radio Hobart.

But a short time later, Mr O’Byrne clarified negotiations were still ongoing.

“Discussions are still ongoing and no arrangements have been finalised,” he said in a statement.

“I intend to provide supply and confidence to the Premier and this government in the absence of any other party putting their hand up and attempting to form a government.”

Mr Rockliff needs the support of just one more crossbencher after inking a deal with three Jacqui Lambie Network MPs on Wednesday.

The agreement means the JLN three would not vote against the Liberals on censure or no-confidence motions “except in cases of malfeasance or corruption”.

In exchange, an independent assessor will look at the state’s finances and the proposed AFL stadium and the integrity commission will be reviewed.

It’s not clear if Mr O’Byrne would be bound by the same conditions, but Mr Rockliff insisted there had been no horse trading for his support.

“I’ve offered him nothing in return – except goodwill and partnership,” he said.

“We’ll talk over the course of the next week or so … David and I will work on a more formal arrangement. We’ll make it public.”

Mr O’Byrne quit the Labor Party at the start of the year to run as an independent after he was exiled from its parliamentary party and he failed to secure preselection.

He was elected to parliament in 2010 and was leader of the party for all of 51 days in 2021, resigning after he was accused of sexually harassing a junior staffer a decade earlier.

An internal investigation found his behaviour was “inappropriate and wrong” but did not amount to sexual harassment.

Mr O’Byrne has previously said his actions had been inappropriate but at the time he believed they were consensual.

Anthony Albanese will become the first sitting prime minister to go on a famous bucket-list journey ahead of Anzac Day.

Peter Dutton has refused to walk back contentious comments he made about the Port Arthur massacre.

A perfect storm of conditions could send things “pear-shaped” for the Liberal Party at Saturday’s Cook by election, experts are warning.
