- Tobias from Walsrode , Germany Still I am very impressed , even After decades of Years passing by, my JOURNEY-cds are Constantly in the Air, just Discovered several YouTube-Videos.... to Continue ROCKING .... STAY HEALTHY!!
- Terri from Long Beach, Wa This song was originally written by Steve Perry while he lived in Los Angeles. It wasn't quite right so he put it aside. When he joined Journey it came with him. Neal Schon helped to suggest some changes in the song that made it work. The rest is history.
- Mary from Castle Rock, Co I love this song. I grew up listening to Journey in the 80's. When I graduated from High School we went for our Senior Trip to San Francisco and took a ride on of their bay area boats and OF COURSE they played this song...will never forget it. It brought me goosbumps. I can still remember who I danced this song with, that's how vivid my memories are of this song. Proud to be from the Bay Area!!! Love you Steve Perry!
- Sandra from Gardnerville, Nv Hey James, San Jose, CA...Too funny! First, though...Steve Perry...What an incredible rock n' roll vocal! I love the song and the way he sang it! Anyway...While I heard the reference to this song/LA for the first time right here, I have to laugh about the SF Giants, thing. Although, I am a LA Dodgers Fan, I was in attendance to hear a friend of mine actually sing the National Anthem at Candlestick at an SF Giants game, (It was on the Fourth of July at a Giants/Dodger game. I don't remember what year for the life of me...details are sketchy...LOL), his elderly dad was there for it and it was a very special moment for all of us. Speaking of the SF Giants, I have a cute story about Will Clark and Mackey Sasser...
- James from San Jose, Ca 3. And finally, while it's personally disappointing to learn about the "L.A." thing, I had a great "Lights" moment in San Francisco. I was at a Giant's game back when they played at Candlestick Park. It was July 4, but San Francisco weather, it was actually rainy. By the end of the game, the rain had turned to a mist, and as they prepared for the July 4 fireworks, they played Lights as they dimmed the stadium lights. I know it was planned that way, but with the mist and everything, it was just a beautiful moment that I'll never forget.
- James from San Jose, Ca 2. lol Wish I could delete my last comment. Here is a 2nd Joe Benson interview with Steve Perry: http://steveperryfanclub.homestead.com/OffTheRecord.html The "L.A." claim is true, and it's about sunRISE on the Bay according to Perry. There you have it.
- James from San Jose, Ca 1. Here's the Joe Benson interview with Steve Perry: http://steveperryfanclub.homestead.com/OffTheRecord3.html There is NOTHING about the song being written about L.A., so stop the rumors.
- Jeff from Seal Beach, Ca I also heard the interview with joe benson on the radio in los angeles where steve perry mentions the lyrics originally were l.A., not the bay. He also mentioned other lyrics about lights referring to los angeles that he had to change to fit the s.F. Image..I love the song but it was originally about los angeles, not San Francisco
- Teri from Ca., Ca In an interview with Joe Benson, Steve Perry talked about this song. Originally, he wrote this song about Los Angeles. The original lyrics said "when the lights go down in the city and the sun shines on L.A.". (The person(s) that mentioned this fact before was correct) When Steve joined Journey he changed it, removing the L.A. reference and added references to the bay area/San Francisco after driving across one of the bridges.
- Beau from San Francisco, Ca So Steve Perry longs for San Francisco while he's in LA, but the distance doesn't make him forget that the San Francisco looks EAST over the bay. I have enjoyed many a sunrise and Steve describes the feeling spectacularly.
- Brandon from Peoria, Il Actually if you think of the "lights going down" as the city's lights fading OFF. Then it makes sense. It would be refering to early morning in San Fransisco. BUT...since the sun rises in the EAST, the sun would not be coming up over the bay at the time...OKAY try this...Late evening, with the sun setting over the San Fransisco Bay and the city's lights coming ON just before dark...that sounds about right :)
- Robert from San Francisco, Ca When the lights go down in the city and the sun shines on the bay. Doesn't happen very often but wouldn't trade it. Journey had it right - right Tilton.
- Casey from Pensacola, Fl yep... he may have been in LA, but he says "I want to get back to my City by the bay" right in the lyrics. seems pretty clear to me...
- Paul from Cincinnati, Oh I love this song. It always makes me feel sentimental.
- Matthew from East Brunswick, Nj Terrific song, Excellent guitar riff. Journey rocks!
- Becki from Hendersonville, Tn This song Is about San Francisco.I belong to a Steve Perry website and they have years of archives of interviews.Steve himself said it was about San Francisco.
- Jennifer from San Antonoi, Tx Note to Emo in San Jose, the lyrics actually say: "When the lights go down in the city and the sun shines on the BAY..." not LA
- Aj from Cleveland, Ga I also love the guitar solo.
- Stefanie Magura from Rock Hill, Sc Well, I know the songs have different beats, but the beginning still sounds like something Hendricks would have done.
- Stefanie Magura from Rock Hill, Sc great song! It's one of my favorites by them! I love the guitar solo. The beginning of the song sounds similar to the beginning of 'little Wing' by Jimi hendricks. Does anyone agree with me?
- Emo from San Jose, Ca Reportedly, Steve Perry did in fact originally write the song in L.A. and the lyrics were something like "When the lights go down in the city and the sun shine on L.A...."
- Tony from San Francisco, Ca This song may have been partially written IN L.A., but last time I checked, San Francisco was the city by the bay.
- Josh from C.p, Mn the song was actually written about LA since steve wrote parts of it while he lived in LA
- Chris from Aurora, Il Steve Perry has an amazing voice, and this is one of the songs that I listen to when I just get tired of bands who have talent, but still get airtime on the radio.

Journey is an American rock band formed in 1973 in San Francisco by former members of Santana and Frumious Bandersnatch. The band has gone through several phases; its strongest commercial success occurred between 1978 and 1987, after which it temporarily disbanded. During that period, the band released a series of hit songs, including 1981's "Don't Stop Believin'", which became in 2009 the top-selling catalog track in iTunes history. Its parent studio album, Escape, the band's eighth and most successful, reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and yielded another of their most popular singles, "Open Arms". Its 1983 follow-up, Frontiers, was almost as successful in the United States, reaching No. 2 and spawning several successful singles; it broadened the band's ap… more »

How Bernie Sanders went from a small-city mayor to a progressive hero
- Bernie Sanders has become a towering figure in American politics. It wasn't always that way.
- He got his start in government as a small-town mayor, decades before his 2016 and 2020 campaigns.
- Here's everything to know about the Democratic socialist senator.
Bernie Sanders is known today as perhaps the most important leader on the American left. It wasn't always that way.
Long before his 2016 and 2020 presidential campaigns helped steer the Democratic Party leftward, the Vermont senator was a lonely voice in American politics — the rare politician willing to call himself a "socialist" in a country defined heavily by its opposition to the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
Sanders was born on September 8, 1941 in Brooklyn, New York to a working class Jewish family . His father was an immigrant from Poland. He attended James Madison High School, where he was a track star , and graduated in 1959, eight years before his present-day colleague Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.
He later attended the University of Chicago, where he was famously arrested for protesting against segregation in Chicago public schools. He graduated in 1964, spent some time on an Israeli kibbutz, and moved to Vermont in 1968.
From mayor of Burlington to the longest-serving independent in congressional history
Sanders's initial foray into politics took place far outside the Democratic party: In the 1970s, he ran for both governor and US Senate multiple times under the banner of the socialist "Liberty Union" party.
His first political victory came in 1981, when he was elected mayor of Burlington — the largest city in Vermont — by a mere 10 votes. He would go on to serve four terms, easily winning reelection each time.
After coming second in a three-way race for Vermont's sole House seat in 1988, he was elected to Congress in 1990 with significant Democratic support. Despite that, he maintained his status as an independent, and would later earn the title of the longest-serving independent in congressional history.
Related stories
Sanders has been an avowed socialist the entire time, and was forthright in defending that position even when the Soviet Union still existed.
"I am a socialist and everyone knows that," Sanders said in 1990 . "They also understand that my kind of democratic socialism has nothing to do with authoritarian communism."
Sanders was elected to the Senate in 2006 and was reelected by overwhelming margins in 2012 and 2018.
The 2016 and 2020 presidential campaigns
In April 2015, Sanders took perhaps the most impactful step of his career — announcing that he would run for president, challenging former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for the 2016 Democratic nomination under the slogan "A Future To Believe In."
Running on a platform that included Medicare for All, addressing income inequality, and enacting campaign finance reform, Sanders helped awaken a movement on the American left that persists to this day, inspiring the rise of figures like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Though he lost his bitterly fought primary against Clinton that year, he demonstrated that there was a robust appetite for more left-wing economic proposals than the Democratic Party had long offered. In the years between his 2016 run and 2020 campaign, several other potential Democratic presidential contenders embraced Sanders's proposals, especially Medicare for All.
In 2020, Sanders ran again, ultimately coming in second to now-President Joe Biden in the primary. He dropped out on April 8, 2020, roughly a month after the COVID-19 pandemic began.
Who Sanders is today — and what he's fighting for
Since his 2020 campaign, Sanders has assumed a more institutional role in the United States Senate.
During the first two years of Biden's presidency, he served as the chairman of the Budget Committee, a perch that afforded him a key role in shaping Biden's domestic agenda, including the ill-fated "Build Back Better" social spending bill that laid the groundwork for the Inflation Reduction Act.
Since 2023 — a period of divided government — Sanders has been the chairman of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, a perch he's used to take on corporations while pushing proposals such as a 32-hour workweek and a $17 federal minimum wage.
He's also been especially outspoken against Israel since the October 7 Hamas attacks, calling for conditions on US aid to the country and voting against bills that don't include those conditions.
Sanders is worth at least $2 million and owns three homes, according to numerous reports. Much of that wealth has come from book sales, a frequent source of outside income for lawmakers with high profiles.
In 2022, for example, Sanders nearly doubled his income via book royalties for his latest book, "It's OK to Be Angry About Capitalism."
"I wrote a best-selling book," he told the New York Times in 2019 . "If you write a best-selling book, you can be a millionaire, too."
The 82-year-old Vermont senator, the second-oldest US senator behind the 90-year-old Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, has not yet said whether he will seek reelection in 2024.
If he chooses to run, he will essentially be a lock for reelection. If he chooses to retire, several candidates may seek to replace him, including Democratic Rep. Becca Balint.

Chiefs Seventh-Round Pick C.J. Hanson on Pre-Draft Journey, Talks with KC
Kansas City's final pick of the draft didn't always know the NFL was a serious possibility for him, but he's excited about everything coming together when it did.
- Author: Jordan Foote
In this story:
In the 2024 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs spent three picks on fortifying their offensive line. With the selections of Kingsley Suamataia, Hunter Nourzad and C.J. Hanson, the team has a good mix of athleticism, short-team projectability, upside and intrigue.
Hanson, the club's final pick at No. 248 overall and one of the 12 former FCS players picked in the draft, may have a combination of all four.
While the Holy Cross product always had dreams of going to the NFL, Hanson didn't know it was a real possibility for him until recently. Describing the pre-draft process as "tremendous" for him, it allowed him to get on teams' radars with his workout and interview performances. Speaking to the media after hearing his name called on Saturday, Hanson paid homage to the journey.
"I think since I was a kid, I've always had the thought," Hanson said. "I was always like the 99th percentile in height. My mom's a big part of my life, and she's always thought it as well. But I had no clue this was an opportunity until, really, the start of this year. I didn't have an agent hit me up until after the third game. It just hit all facets, and these last couple of months have gone super fast. I've been just enjoying the time the whole time. It's been great."
Without his stellar athletic testing, Hanson very well may have been on the undrafted free agent market. His 9.84 Relative Athletic Score was the byproduct of a five-second 40-yard dash, a 33.5-inch vertical and a nearly 10-foot broad jump. At 6-foot-5 with 32-inch arms, Hanson has the ability to play any interior offensive line spot.
Another part of the process Hanson believed helped him was simply getting to meet people. Things like being able to put his talents on display at the East-West Shrine Bowl and attending the NFL Combine, he thinks, were his favorite elements of the process.
"I think just relationships and meeting new people and getting to talk football with them," Hanson said. "Even just training, like, being able to work out with different guys every day from different schools [and] different perspectives, it's so cool. I was blessed to have the opportunity to do everything here. Just meeting people and making relationships, I think, is the coolest part throughout the process."
For most of Kansas City's 2024 picks, familiarity was a theme. Many of their draft picks spoke about how their interviews with the reigning champions went. Suamataia and Nourzad, both linemen, come to mind. Hanson says communication with the Chiefs went swimmingly in recent weeks, which absolutely factored into the pick being made.
Now, it's a dream realized and full speed ahead.
"Our conversations have been great, I've talked to them multiple times," Hanson said. "But you never know until you know, and I'm coming to a back-to-back Super Bowl-winning team. There's a standard there, and I'm going to have to definitely get to that standard and excel past that standard. I'm looking to come in here and give it my all and hopefully help this team out and make it even better than it already is. I'm in a Super lucky position to be here, and I couldn't be more excited."

Politics | LA City Council amends ballot measure that promises ‘truly independent redistricting’
Members want an additional measure to cover redistricting for the lausd board of education.
The Los Angeles City Council approved amendments Tuesday to a ballot measure to establish an independent redistricting commission that would be tasked with redrawing the boundaries of council districts for future elections.
In a 13-0 vote, council members instructed the City Attorney’s Office to update the measure to reflect changes approved by the Ad Hoc Committee on Governance Reform earlier this month.
Establishing an independent redistricting commission requires a change to the City Charter, which will need approval by voters.
“To say its been a journey to get here is an understatement,” said Councilwoman Nithya Raman, a member of the ad hoc committee. “We are finally here, and I’m very, very excited to be voting on something that will be sent before the voters in November so that we here in the city of Los Angeles can finally get a truly independent redistricting commission.”
RELATED: Who carves up Los Angeles City Council’s 15 districts, voters or politicians?
She said the changes made by the committee will help bring the city closer to being “free of corruption, free of conflicts of interest, and closer to the kind of city that every single resident of Los Angeles deserves to live in.”
Council President Paul Krekorian echoed Raman’s sentiments, adding that residents will be able to vote on something that has “never passed this council in the 100 years that this council has existed as a 15-member body.”
“I can’t stress enough about the historic vote that you’re about to take, which will once and for all take redistricting completely out of the hands of this council and give it to the citizens to decide who will represent them — rather than having elected officials decide which citizens they want to represent.”
The amendments cover different aspects of how the independent commission would work.
The ad hoc committee recommended expanding the applicant pool to allow someone who is not a registered voter or even a citizen of the United States serve on the commission. Another recommendation is to conduct a random drawing at a public meeting to select one person from eight geographic areas to serve.
Another recommendation would provide live translation of commission meetings in English and Spanish, as well as any documents. In another effort to bolster participation, the commission would be tasked with providing outreach materials and other important documents in the city’s 14 most spoken languages.
The recommendations also include providing redistricting training to the commission as well as workshops for the public.
During the public comment portion of the meeting, some groups expressed their support for an independent redistricting commission, including California Common Cause, an organization that advocates for government transparency and redistricting reform.
“Independent redistricting commission means that fair maps will serve residents, not incumbent politicians,” Russia Chavis Cardenas, voting rights and redistricting program manager at California Common Cause, told City Council members.
“In 2008, our office helped end partisan gerrymandering at the state and congressional lines with the establishment of the California Citizens Redistricting Commission — the gold standard for IRCs in the state,” she added.
While Cardenas backed the city’s proposal, she urged officials to provide the commission with guaranteed funding, as well as allowing the commission to hire its own legal counsel. She also recommended that the council ensure that city employees would not be allowed to serve on the commission until at least four years after leaving the city workforce.
Jeremy Payne of Catalyst California, one of the members of the Our LA Coalition — a group of community-based organizations advocating for racial justice, political reform and transparency — urged council members to incorporate more opportunities for general public comment during IRC meetings.
During Tuesday’s meeting, City Council members also voted 12-0 in favor of recommendations to create an independent redistricting commission for the Los Angeles Unified School District. Council members instructed city staff to prepare a ballot measure for a panel similar to the city’s commission.
A requirement of the LAUSD’s process would ensure that four of the commissioners be parents or guardians of students, and students who are at least 16 years old would also be allowed to apply.
The ad hoc committee was created in the wake of the City Hall scandal two years ago in which three council members, two of them now gone, were caught on a leaked recording discussing ways to redraw districts in their favor under the current redistricting system — which takes place every 10 years, but which also allows incumbent members to have the ultimate say.
That leaked conversation also contained racist comments that led to former Council President Nury Martinez’s resignatio n, among other fallout.

Owner Carrie Clark has an Amazon warehouse worker to thank for helping to bring her and her pet back together. The Mom of two, from Salt Lake City, Utah , was left distressed when she recently lost her beloved cat Galena.
She posted about her concerns on social media, informing others that her much-loved kitty disappeared on Wednesday, April 10, from their home. "We searched every nook and cranny in our home, neighbourhood … neighbourhoods surrounding us for a week," she posted on Facebook to no avail.

A week later she thought the situation was hopeless when there was still no sign of the cat. But Carrie was in for a massive shock when on April 17, she received a phone call from a veterinarian in California who claimed she had her missing kitty.
Carrie didn’t think she "would ever see her again", she told Fox News . "I went into shock and didn’t believe the caller," she added.
She had to confirm the cat was in fact hers so verified her phone number, address and the veterinarian she used for pet care with the vet in California as all of this information could be found on her microchip. But it was still a mystery how the cat had found her way to the Golden State.
The vet helped Clark find out how Galena made her journey, revealing she had jumped into an Amazon return package and was accidentally shipped to a return centre warehouse in California.

A surprised Amazon night worker named Brandy Hunter was informed by another warehouse worker that the animal had been found in a returned parcel six days after it had been sent. "A live cat was literally the last thing they were expecting to see when they opened the box," she said.
Brandy said she immediately took the animal to a vet and her microchip showed just how far she had travelled. "Without the microchip and the kindness of Brandy [Hunter], we never would have found her again," Carrie wrote on Facebook.
She and her husband, Matt Clark, hopped on a plane to California to bring their beloved pet home. "Galena’s been ‘my kitty’ for six years — she and I have a very close bond, and it felt incredible to be there for her in her time of need," Carrie said.
They were lucky the cat did not suffocate on her journey. The feline friend miraculously survived because the side of the box, which contained five pairs of steel-toed work boots, had split open. Her blood work came back completely normal when she was checked over at the vet.
"We can’t thank Brandy [Hunter] enough for rescuing our baby and all the kindness and love that she shares to everyone," Carrie gushed.
