How to Watch the 2022 Giro dâItalia
A Hungarian departure, two time trials, and lots of mountains (as usual) headline the 2022 Tour of Italy.
Itâs May, which means itâs time for one of the sportâs hardest races in one of the worldâs most beautiful locations: the Giro dâItalia, the first of pro cyclingâs trifecta of three-week âGrand Tours.â
Hereâs everything you need to know about this yearâs race, from the route to its history to the riders to watch and predictions for 2022.
What: The 2022 Giro dâItalia
When: Friday, May 6 - Sunday, May 29
Where: Stage 1 begins in Budapest, Hungary, and ends in Verona, Italy.
Course preview
Overall, the 2022 Giro dâItalia covers 3,410km (2,114 miles) spread over 21 stages, with two individual time trials, six mountain stages (four of which end with summit finishes), six âhillyâ stages that look perfect for breakaways, seven days that should end in field sprints, and three rest days.
The race opens with three stages in Hungary, starting with a 195km road stage from Budapest to VisegrĂĄd on Friday, with an uphill finish that should make for an exciting sprint. Stage 2 brings the Giroâs first individual time trial (ITT) with a 9.2km city circuit that visits both Pest and Buda on either side of the Danube. Stage 3 covers 201km from KaposvĂĄr to BalatonfĂŒred with a flat finish that should produce the first pure field sprint of the race. A Monday Rest Day gives the race a chance to fly from Hungary to Sicily, where two stages await including a Stage 4 summit finish on Mount Etna, the first of this yearâs four mountaintop finishes.
The race then works its way north with three tough stages at the end of the Giroâs first week: Stage 7, a lumpy stage with four categorized climbs and almost 4,500 meters of elevation gain; Stage 8, a short stage with five hilly finishing circuits around Naples; and Stage 9, a high mountain trek through the Apennines that ends with the climb to Blockhaus, one of the longer, steeper climbs in this yearâs Giro. By the summit, the Giroâs real contenders should emerge.
The second week begins along the Adriatic coast and heads north and then west through Emilia-Romagna for Stages 10 and 11. Stage 12 begins in Parma and ends along the Mediterranean in Genova; Stage 13 starts in Sanremo, a town known for hosting the finish to the seasonâs first one-day Monument, Milano-Sanremo. On paper, these stages should favor sprinters and breakaway specialists.
The real action should come on Stages 14 and 15, which close the Giroâs second week. Stage 14 takes the riders on a short but intense ride from Santena to Trentino, with two-and-a-half laps of a challenging circuit featuring five categorized climbs. Stage 15 brings the race into the Western Alps and ends with two First Category climbs before the Second Category climb to the summit finish in Cogne. Itâs not the hardest summit finish of the Giro, but after two weeks of racing there will be time gaps. By this point, only a handful of riders should still be in contention to win the race overall.
The Giro always saves its hardest stages for the final week, and this yearâs no different. The week opens with two mountain stages (Stages 16 and 17) that arenât true summit finishes, but might as well be since their finish lines both come fewer than 10km downhill from the First Category summits at the end of each stage.
But even with an ITT looming on Stage 21, the race should all come down to Stage 20, a classic mountain stage through the Dolomites thatâs easily the hardest in this yearâs race. Ending with a trio of classic summitsâthe Passo San Pellegrino, the Passo Pordoi (the highest climb in this yearâs race), and the Passo Fedaiaâthis stage should blow the race apart and most likely, determine the Giroâs final champion.
And just in case it doesnât, Stage 21âs 17km individual time trial in Verona will finish things once and for all.
What happened last year
Colombiaâs Egan Bernal (INEOS Grenadiers) won the 2021 Giro dâItalia after taking the pink jersey on Stage 9 and defending it all the way to the finish in Milan. But despite wearing the maglia rosa for 13 days, Bernalâs victory was far from easy. The Colombianâwho also won the 2019 Tour de Franceâsuffered through a few tough days during the Giroâs third week. Without the support of his teammatesâespecially fifth-place finisher Daniel MartinezâBernal might not have won his second Grand Tour.
Italyâs Damiano Caruso (Bahrain-Victorious) finished second, and Great Britainâs Simon Yates (Team BikeExchange) finished third. Slovakiaâs Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe) won the Points Classification, Franceâs Geoffrey Bouchard (AG2R CitroĂ«n Team) won the King of the Mountains Classification, and Bernal, 24 at the time, was the Giroâs Best Young Rider. INEOS Grenadiers was the Giroâs best team, placing two riders in the Giroâs top-5 overall and winning four stages.
Riders to watch
INEOS-Grenadiers (formerly Team Sky) has won three of the last four Tours of Italy, including the last two in a row. However, neither of the past two winnersâBernal (2021) and Great Britainâs Tao Geoghegan Hart (2020)âwill be racing this yearâs edition. Instead, the team turns to Ecuador's Richard Carapaz, the reigning Olympic road race champion, to lead the way. Carapaz won the Giro for Movistar back in 2019 and has since finished second at the Tour of Spain (2020) and third at the Tour de France (2021) for INEOS. Heâs the top favorite.
His toughest competitors should be last yearâs third-place finisher, Yates (Team BikeExchange-Jayco), who recently took two impressive stage wins at the Vuelta Asturias, and Portugalâs JoĂŁo Almeida (UAE Team Emirates), who finished sixth in 2020, fourth in 2021, and looks ready to challenge for the overall win.
Other General Classification contenders include Spainâs Mikel Landa (Bahrain-Victorious), who always looks the part but succumbs to either bad luck or crashes, Franceâs Romain Bardet (Team DSM), a two-time Tour de France podium finisher whoâs rejuvenated his career with the Dutch team, and the Netherlandsâ Tom Dumuolin (Jumbo-Visma) who returns to the race that he won in 2017 as more of a dark horse than a favorite.
But thereâs life beyond the Giroâs GC contenders. Cavendish (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) returns to the Giro after last racing it nine years ago. Weâre hoping that Cav wins a few stages and earns himself a spot on his teamâs Tour de France squadâwhich means weâll get one more chance to see him try and set the record for the most stage wins in Tour history.
The Giro will also mark the Grand Tour debut of Eritreaâs Biniam Girmay (IntermarchĂ©-Wanty-Gobert MatĂ©riaux) whoâs been one of the seasonâs biggest revelations. The 22-year-old became the first African to win a Belgian classic when he took Ghent-Wevelgem in March, and now he sets his sights on winning a stage at the Giro. (Heâs our pick to win Stage 1 and take the raceâs first pink jersey.)
And speaking of the classics, the Netherlandsâs Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) makes his Giro debut as well. Winner of two of the last three Tours of Flanders, the Dutchman is hoping to use the Giro to build a solid foundation for his goals later in the season after a back injury ruined most of his off-season. (Not that it showed.)
Last but not least, the 2022 Giro should feature several North Americans, including the USAâs Joe Dombrowski (Astana) who won a stage last year (before crashing out the next day), Will Barta (Movistar), whoâs supporting Alejandro Valverde in his final ride at the Giro, and Lawson Craddock (Team BikeExchange-Jayco), whoâs hoping to help Yates in his bid to finally win it.
Canadaâs Alexander Cataford (Israel-Premier Tech) will also be on the starting line in Budapest. The 28-year-old has started two Grand Tours in his career but has yet to finish one, so keep an eye on his progress once the race gets into its second and third weeks.

The latest news and race results from Italy's Grand Tour, covering everything from the start lists to the race winners.
The Giro d'Italia 2024 marks the 107th edition of the Italian Grand Tour. Starting at the Venaria Reale, just outside Turin, the route heads south towards Naples before travelling back north and into the Dolomites. Day 21 and the final stage sees a city circuit around the streets of Rome.
The three-week event is the opener in the trio of Grand Tours, followed by the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España .
Last year's winner, Primož Roglič, is not expected to attempt to defend the title, instead focusing on the Tour de France - so we can expect a new leader in pink for 2024. Wout van Aert has advertised his desire to claim the GC at the Italian race this year, whilst Geraint Thomas has set his sights on a Giro/Tour double.
This year, Cycling Weekly will be covering the race with daily race reports, reactions following each stage, and analysis as the Italian showdown progresses.

Giro d'italia 2024: the jerseys.
The rider wearing the pink jersey (maglia rosa) at the Giro d'Italia 2024 will be the one leading the general classification. This is the rider who has accumulated the fastest time around the route so far, inclusive of time bonuses collected. On the final day, it is awarded to the overall general classification winner along with the Trofeo Senza Fine.
There are other jerseys up for grabs too. The purple (ciclamino) jersey is awarded to the rider who has accumulated the most points. More points are offered at the end of flatter, punchier stages than on mountain finishes, so this is a jersey for the sprinters. The blue (azzura) jersey goes to the rider who accumulates the most points on classified climbs, and the white (bianca) jersey is like the pink jersey but given to the best young rider under 26.

- Arnaud Démare (Groupama-FDJ) won Stage 5. Juan Pedro Lopez (Trek-Segafredo) remains overall leader.
- Enrico Gasparotto, Bora-Hansgrohe Sports Director, following Stage 4: "This morning we discussed that the stage could go in two directions: either the GC teams control the stage well, or a big breakaway group will be allowed to go clear. If a big group went, we wanted to be represented by Lennard, who is in good shape. He ultimately put in an incredible performance and managed his forces well. At the beginning he saved his energy and then went full throttle. We’re very happy to have won a stage and the morale in the team is really high. Our GC riders were also able to reach the finish in a group of about 20 riders and thereby stayed together with the other GC riders. So it was a good team performance from that perspective as well."
- Lennard Kamna (Bora-Hansgrohe) won Stage 4. Juan Pedro Lopez (Trek-Segafredo) is new leader in the general classification.
- Monday is a transfer/rest day at the Giro d'Italia. The race resumes Tuesday with Stage 4.
- Mark Cavendish (Quickstep-Alpha Vinyl) won Stage 3. Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) remains leader on G.C.
- Matt White, Team BikeExchange-Jayco Head Sport Director, following Stage 2: "Winning in the Giro d’Italia is always a lovely day, and the time trial Simon produced today was a very, very impressive one. We had a feeling he would be in the mix, but for him to win his first TT in a Grand Tour, it was a very special effort from him. It was also one of the best time trials Sobrero has ever ridden as well and I think across the board the team performed very well today, and it’s a nice reward for Matteo to be in the best young rider jersey."
- More from Simon Yates: "Today was a 12-minute effort, we still have some much more demanding stages in front of us. But of course, we will celebrate today, it’s one of only two time trials I have ever won and my first ever in a Grand Tour, so we’ll enjoy today, but I think we need to look at the bigger picture."
- Simon Yates (Team BikeExchange-Jayco) after Stage 2, which he won: "I was never confident, Van der Poel was close as well, but of course you always have that belief that you can win, and eventually I managed to hang on."
- Simon Yates (Team BikeExchange-Jayco) won Stage 2. Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) remains overall leader.
- Jens Zemke, Bora-Hansgrohe sports director, following Stage 1: "Big congrats to the whole team. Everybody did a perfect job and how they presented themselves in the final is really promising. After those setbacks in the last weeks this is more than we hoped for, and I believe we can take some confidence from this first stage."
- Wilco Kelderman (Bora-Hansgrohe) after Stage 1: "Actually, I was caught up behind that crash at the bottom of the climb. I had to dig deep to get back in position and I hit the front just after Lenni was caught. I wanted to carry the momentum even I knew it was quite early. I think we can be really happy with today."
- Lennard Kämna (Bora-Hansgrohe) following Stage 1: "We didn’t plan to attack in the final, but when I had a good position, and the pace went down a little I thought it’s a good moment to give it a try. In the end it was longer than I thought to the line, and I blew up. But sensations have been really good, so I can be happy."
- Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) won Stage 1 and is first leader in the general classification.
- Team DSM roster for the 2022 Giro d'Italia:
Thymen Arensman (NED) Romain Bardet (FRA)âš Cees Bol (NED)âš Romain Combaud (FRA) Alberto Dainese (ITA)âš Nico Denz (GER)âš Chris Hamilton (AUS) Martijn Tusveld (NED)
- Matt Winston, Team DSM coach: "We head to Italy with a strong team to support Romain where we will aim for a good GC result as a team. We need to be switched on and in the race early, since there will be some difficult stages in the first seven days but we have to think about the final week in the northern part of Italy too, which also will be super hard. We have two sprint options with Cees and Alberto that we will take on a day-by-day approach so that we are in the hunt for the sprint results. We continue with that atmosphere that we brought together in Tour of the Alps and the Tour of Turkey, with a focus on good teamwork, which we hope will bring us to a good lap around Italy."
