Indian Museum Kolkata Timings

The Indian Museum in Kolkata is the ninth oldest museum in the world and the largest museum in India with its foundation stone laid in the year 1814. It has exhibits of some finest collection of artefacts that include, armours, fossils, skeletons, antiques, ornaments, Egyptian mummies and contemporary paintings as well as paintings from the Mughal era.

Indian museum also boasts to have one of the most unique assemblages of coins and sculptures that date back to the second century AD. There are sculptures from Gandhara School of Art and architectural remains from Bodhgaya too, which are displayed in separate galleries. The museum is popularly called as ‘Jaadu Ghar’.

Museums are a treasure trove for all history buffs. The Indian Museum has a total of 35 galleries divided into 6 categories namely Anthropology, Art, Archaeology, Geology, Zoology and Economic Botany. The museum celebrated its bicentennial anniversary in February 2014.

History of Indian Museum Kolkata

The conceptualization of setting up a museum in 1794 was, in itself a moment of pride towards the cultural development and a value addition to the heritage and history of India. The ideation of Indian Museum was proposed by The Asiatic Society of Bengal which was formed by Sir William Jones in 1784, a well-known scholar who devoted his life to the service of India. It only appeared concrete by 1808, when the society members were granted a suitable place by the then Government of India in Chowringhee- Park Street area.

The principle purpose of forming the Asiatic Society of Bengal was to promote a centre for learning and development of culture and art through socio-cultural activities and also to preserve the culture and tradition pertaining to the limited geography of Asia.

The Indian Museum was established in February 1814 by Dr. Nathaniel Wallich, a Danish Botanist. Dr. Wallich suggested that the museum must have two sections- an archaeological, ethnological and technical section and a geological and zoological one. Wallich was named as the Honorary Curator of the Oriental Museum of the Asiatic Society. He had also donated several botanical specimens from his personal collection.

As the museum started gaining popularity among both Europeans and Indians, objects started pouring in from various donors from across the country. The list of donors was numbered at 27 in the year 1816, all Europeans, who gifted 127 items. The individual collectors were Col. Stewart, Dr Tytler, General Mackenjzie, Mr Bryan Hodgson, Capt. Gillon. Among the 49 Indian donors, the most recognised names were Baboo Ram Comul Sen, Kali Kissen Bahadoor, Moharaja Radhacant Deb, Mathuranath Mullick, Sivachandra Doss, and her Highness Begam Sambroo.

The Government expanded the geology and mineral sections in the museum and also allocated an additional grant of INR 250 per month for geology section only. The curators of other sections received salaries ranging between INR 50 to INR 200 per month. This was done after the resignation of Dr. Wallich.

The Geological Survey of India was amalgamated with the Geological Museum in the year 1858.

The new/present building was opened for public with just two galleries on 1 April, 1878. It was transformed into a multidisciplinary institution separated by categories. The Archaeology gallery and the bird gallery of the Zoology section were opened in the new building.

Zoological and Anthropological sections of the museum led to the foundation of the Zoological Survey of India in 1916, which in turn led to the formation of the Anthropological Survey of India in 1945.

In the beginning, the museum was named “Asiatic Society Museum” and was later known as the “Imperial Museum” but later went on to be re-named as the “Indian Museum”. The institution comes under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.

The present building of Indian Museum is another architectural grandeur that stands strong till date. The structure was designed by the most famous architect of Victorian period, Walter Granville, who has the credit of designing quite a few landmarks of Kolkata.

The museum was completed in 1875 at a total expense of INR 1, 40,000. The building has three floors, each spanning across an area of around 930 square metres. There are a total of 60 galleries which are divided into six major categories namely Anthropology, Art, Archaeology, Zoology, Botany and Geology.

There is a library inside the museum that houses a vast collection of some 50,000 books and journals along with a museum shop that sells children’s books, Art Albums, photographs and Picture Postcards.

Botany Section : The resources listed under the Botany category is the most extensive of all with information on Indian flora and vegetation like Indian timbers, Food products, Medicinal produces, Vegetable fibres, Oil and oilseeds and various crops commonly grown in India.

Zoology Section : The galleries under Zoology Section include Fish Gallery, Amphibia and Reptilia Gallery, Bird Gallery, Mammal Gallery and Ecology Gallery.

The zoological and Anthropological sections now operate under the Zoological Survey of India.

List of Major Galleries at Indian Museum

Bharhut Gallery : The gallery displays the architectural remains from a place called Bharhut in Satna district of Madhya Pradesh. There are fragments of railings from Bodhgaya belonging to first century BCE which was believed to have been encircling the Bodhi Tree under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment.

The gallery also exhibits the only surviving eastern gateway of Bharhut, known as “Torana”. This was excavated by Sir Alexander Cunningham in 1873. The gateway was carved out of red sandstone and belonged to Sunga period.

The other exhibits displayed in the gallery include that of popular folk deities and demi gods and goddesses like yakshas and yakshinis, reliefs displaying Jataka tales, stories from the life of Buddha

Bronze Gallery : The Bronze Gallery has a repository of metal images which date back between 8th to 14th Century CE.

Gandhara Gallery : The Gandhara Gallery displays sculptures representing the life of Lord Buddha. Apart from which, it also displays of Bodhisattva and Maitreya of the Gandhara School of Art. The art school flourished in the 2nd Century CE and the artwork was majorly and influence of Greco-Roman culture. The artefacts present in the gallery were excavated from Mardan and Loriyan Tangai in the Afghanistan region.

L. Archaeology gallery : The Archaeology gallery focuses on the evolution of sculptures in India. The sculptures displayed here are from various faiths that were followed between 2nd Century CE and 15th Century CE, belonging to Kushana, Gupta, Pala-Sena, Chandella, Pallava, Hoysala, Vijayanagar and Chola periods.

The major faiths practiced during the time were Buddhism, Brahmanical and Jainism. There are a few South East Asian sculptures recovered from Java that belonged to Buddhist and Brahmanical origins.

Decorative art Gallery : The objects on display in the decorative art section were either used for decoration or ritualistic purposes during the early times. They are all aesthetic creations by skilled craftsmen and include objects used as Royal Glazed Earthenware or art pieces. The exhibits include temple façade of Mandalay with Burmese art, the front piece of Kathiawar house, front portion of a Salin monastery and various other objects made out of wood, brass, bones, silver, ivory, copper, jade, bidri and damascene.

Paintings Gallery : The paintings gallery is divided into 2 major sections namely Indian Miniatures and Bengal School of Art. The Indian Miniatures section display miniature paintings from various regions and dynasties ranging from Mughals, Deccan, Rajasthani, Pahari. Provincial Mughals and, Company of School of Paintings.

The Bengal School of Art has masterpieces from the 19th and 20th centuries that belong to the Neo-Bengal School of Painting. The paintings are majorly of famous Indian personalities like Rabindranath Tagore, Jamini Roy, Ishwari Prasad, Asit Halder, Nandalal Bose, Sunayani Devi and Abdur Rehman Chugtai. The displays also include various lithographs, pattachitra art and oil paintings depicting 20th Century Bengal.

Textile Gallery : The Textile Gallery exhibits fabrics produced in the Indian Subcontinent ranging from Kashmiri shawls to Benarasi Sarees of Benaras to Phulkari chadars from Punjab, Mirror works from Kutch to Jamdani Saree from Dhaka and Baluchari and Kantha Silk from Bengal, Soznis from Pakistan and printed fabrics from Lucknow and Chennai.

Botanical Gallery : This section is an industrial botanical section with detailed information on Indian vegetation and timbers.

Bird Gallery : The gallery displays specimen of migratory birds, their behavioural patterns, and ecosystem and survival patterns. There is also an insect gallery adjacent to the bird gallery.

Mammal Gallery : The mammal Gallery is included under Zoology category, which in turn operates under the Zoological Survey of India. It was opened in 1878 with the primary objective of using the specimen for education and conservation purposes. Some of the exhibits are as old as 100 years and include stuffed animals, horns, fossils, skeletons and skulls.

Mask Gallery : This is the newest addition to the museum collection and it displays masks used during tribal festivals across the country as well as masks from Bhutan and New Guinea. The gallery was opened to the public in 2016 and is located on the 4th floor.

Indian Museum

India's largest and oldest museum was founded in 1814 by the Asiatic Society of Bengal under the guidance of Danish botanist Dr. Nathanial Wallich. The museum is housed in a Neoclassical-style heritage building and has 35 galleries spread over three floors. Its diverse exhibits are divided into sections on archeology, anthropology, geology, zoology, economic botany, and art. Highlights include sculptures from Gandhara School of Art, the remains of Bharhut Stupa in Madhya Pradesh , Mughal-era miniature paintings, 50,000 ancient coins, meteorite fragments, fossils, and an Egyptian mummy.

Victoria Memorial Hall Museum

The grandest building in Kolkata, Victoria Memorial will transport you back to the time of the British Raj. Lord Curzon, the Viceroy of British India, conceived the imposing monument as a tribute to deceased Queen Victoria and the history of British rule in India. It was built over 15 years, from 1906 and 1921. Its recently revamped galleries contain paintings, coins, rare photographs and books, manuscripts, weapons, armory, textiles, and a piano used by the Queen. The Calcutta Gallery explains how the British developed the city as their capital up until 1911, when they founded a new capital in Delhi . Take some time out to relax in the vast garden surrounding the museum—it's an attraction in itself.

The museum is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday, except national holidays. Tickets include entrance to the garden, and are 30 rupees for Indians and 500 rupees for foreigners. Not only is it educational, it's a whole lot of fun, with many interactive exhibits and extensive use of technology that bring science to life. 3D shows and a time machine with motion simulation provide immersive space-related experiences, while a 360-degree digital panorama and trolley ride past life-like robotic dinosaurs emphasize facets of evolution. There's also a maritime center, butterfly nursery, aquarium, and outdoor activities such as a maze and toy train.

Opening hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Entry tickets cost 60 rupees per person. Extra charges are applicable for some attractions.

Birla Industrial & Technological Museum

Notable for being India's first science museum, the Birla Industrial and Technological Museum was established in 1959 and occupies what was the palatial residence of industrialist GD Birla. The museum will be of most interest to young children and students, as it has been specifically designed to enhance learning. Its 13 galleries cover topics such as biotechnology, metals, motive power, electricity, mathematics, physics, and transport. A mock coal mine and gallery for visually-challenged visitors are special features, along with free and paid science demonstrations. The 30-minute show on static electricity is particularly interesting.

The museum is open from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day except on Holi and Diwali. Tickets cost 50 rupees per person. Extra charges are applicable for some attractions.

Ami Kolkata (I Am Kolkata) Museum

Opened in 2019 inside Metcalfe Hall, a restored 19th-century heritage building alongside the Hooghly River, Ami Kolkata is one of the city's new generation of museums. It's filled with a quirky and nostalgic collection of items that reflect the soul of Kolkata. Many of the items here have been cleverly repurposed, including a boat with a touchscreen panel that showcases the city's stories, as well as a tea seller's kettle that's been turned into a comment box. Large sections of the museum are dedicated to Bengali cinema and prominent personalities like Satyajit Ray. Old movie posters, photos, book covers, and vintage advertisements decorate the walls. Distinctive city sounds are also replayed in the museum's audio visual section.

Opening hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily except Mondays. The entry fee is 20 rupees.

Ghare Baire Art Museum

Kolkata's graceful Old Currency Building narrowly escaped demolition and now houses a museum with an epic exhibition of Bengali art spanning the 18th to 20th centuries. Curated by the Delhi Art Gallery in collaboration with the National Gallery of Modern Art, you won't find a better collection under one roof. The 600-odd works are a mix of paintings, photos, sculptures, and wooden block-printing equipment. They trace the development of art in Bengal through early Indigenous art, realism and academic art, modernist art with special emphasis on the Shantiniketan style, and filmmaking. Art aficionados should also check out the Artsacre Museum of Bengal Modern Art in Kolkata.

Tram World Kolkata

Tram World is one of several projects aimed at saving Kolkata's historic trams/streetcars from extinction. The museum was launched in December 2020 to mark the 140th anniversary of the Calcutta Tramways Company. It features a collection of tram carriages (some dating back to 1938) with old photos, groovy wall art, and vintage cars curated by the Classic Drivers Club at the transformed Gariahat tram depot. A cultural center with a food court, shops, music, and exhibition space is also being added. Buy a Tram Pass for entry (and unlimited rides on all city trams for a day), and arrive there on the special Paat Rani tram.

Reserve Bank of India Museum

The Reserve Bank of India's new currency museum opened in 2019 and is an entertaining place to find out all about the history of money and banking, as well as the role of gold in India. The museum employs storytelling and technology to convey its message through interactive displays, art installations, audio and video, games, and quizzes. Visitors can even get a unique souvenir—their name printed on a certificate by an iron press-printing machine used in the early 20th century to print government bonds.

The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., daily except Mondays and national holidays. Entry is free.

Natya Shodh Sansthan Theater Museum

Another of Kolkata's new themed museums, this one is dedicated to the history of theatre and performing arts in India. Its three galleries contain various exhibits related to Sanskrit, folk, and modern theatre. There are rare books, manuscripts, memorabilia, clippings, photos, masks, musical instruments, costumes, make-up kits, and models of film production sets. The large collection of Chhau folk masks is captivating.

Rabindra Bharati Museum (Jorasanko Thakurbari)

Fans of acclaimed Bengali poet and philosopher Rabindranath Tagore can get insight into his former life at the ancestral home of his family, Jorasanko Thakur Bari (Tagore House). Situated on the campus of Rabindra Bharati University, it displays many personal effects—including letters, books, paintings, and photos—as well as a fine collection of art. Gurusaday Museum (Museum of Bengal Folk Art)

Delve deeper into the arts and crafts of undivided Bengal at this museum, which holds more than 3,000 items personally collected by eminent Indian Civil Services officer Gurusaday Dutt over the course of his career from 1929 to 1939. Unfortunately, the museum doesn't get the attention it deserves. Its outstanding collection dates as far back as the 16th century and consists of artwork, puppets, terracotta objects, textiles, tribal masks, manuscripts, dolls, and stone sculptures. The 200 Kantha-stitched quilts, and original Kalighat and Patachitra paintings are often praised.

Swami Vivekananda's Ancestral House and Cultural Centre

India's biggest and oldest major museum celebrated its bicentenary in February 2014. It's mostly a lovably old-fashioned place that fills a large colonnaded palace ranged around a central lawn. Extensive exhibits in various galleries include fabulous sculptures dating back two millennia (notably the lavishly carved 2nd-century-BC Bharhut Gateway), Egyptian mummies, relics from the ancient Indus Valley civilisation of Harappa and Mohenjo-daro, pickled human embryos, dangling whale skeletons and some 37 types of opium in the library-like commercial botany gallery.

There are some oddball exhibits, too, such as 7kg of rings and bangles found in the tummy of a gigantic crocodile. No bags are allowed inside. Hand carriages can be stored at the entrance, but don’t arrive with a big backpack. Avoid visiting on Sundays or public holidays, when the place can be packed with noisy local tourists and playful children's groups.

At a distance of 8 km from Kolkata Railway Station, Indian Museum is a museum located at Park Street in Kolkata. Popularly known as 'Jadughar', it is the oldest and the largest museum in India and among the popular Kolkata Tourist Places. Referred to as the Imperial Museum in British India era texts, Indian Museum is the earliest and the largest multipurpose museum in India and the ninth oldest museum of the world. The museum was founded in 1814 by the Asiatic Society of Bengal at the present building of the Asiatic Society, 1 Park Street, Kolkata. The founder curator was Nathaniel Wallich, a Danish botanist. Later, the museum was shifted to the present building in 1878. This is an autonomous organization under Ministry of Culture, Government of India. Designed by Walter B Grawille in Italian Style, the museum building comprises of three floors, each spanning across an area of about 930 sq. meters. Presently, the museum has 35 galleries which have been divided into six categories namely Anthropology, Art, Geology, Archaeology, Zoology, and Industry. The art section of the Indian Museum boasts an exquisite art collection, which comprising textiles, miniature paintings, beautiful art objects from Asian countries like Burma, China, Japan, Nepal, and Tibet. The bronze image of Siva, which belongs to the 9th-10th century and the wood-made figure of Salabhanjika of the 15-16th century, is the star attraction here. The Anthropological and Zoological sections of the Indian Museum formed the Zoological Survey of India in 1916, which afterward gave rise to the Anthropological Survey of India in 1945. History of the Museum

The history of the Indian Museum is closely linked with the history of India itself. The museum was founded in 1814 by Dr. Nathaniel Wallich , a Danish botanist who worked for the East India Company. He was also a member of the Asiatic Society of Bengal, which was established in 1784 by Sir William Jones, a British jurist and scholar who had a keen interest in Indian languages and culture.

The Asiatic Society aimed to collect and study the natural and cultural resources of India and Asia. Wallich proposed to create a museum within the Asiatic Society building to display the specimens and artefacts that were collected by him and other members of the society.

The proposal was approved by Lord Hastings, the then Governor-General of India, who also donated Rs. 10,000 for the museum. Bawali is also surrounded by a number of places of tourist interest, like Raypur riverside, Achipur, Boro Kachari Mandir, Navratna Gopinath Mandir- all within 10 km. To spend the weekend in leisure, you can simply choose to go fishing or take long walks through the villages. Bawali is just 35 km from Kolkata. Hence, you can conveniently take the road. Trains from Sealdah to Budge Budge are also available. Buses like SD76 will take you from Kolkata to Budge Budge.

A cluster of small villages, Kamarpukur is nestled between Vishnupur and Tarakeshwar. Long stretches rice farmlands, vegetable orchards, mango groves, palm groves and rural homes and temples make a wonderful scenic landscape. Fishing is one of the more popular activities in Babur Haat. You can also go on a short picnic trip to the nearby local village grounds, open spaces of which also allow for outdoor games like badminton and cricket to be played. Malancha villages, famous for its fish markets is only 15 km from Babur Haat. You can also opt for country boating, by crossing the river to visit Chaital village. Greenery, fresh air and open spaces will definitely leave your spirits rejuvenated. Babur Haat is located at a distance of about 50 km from Kolkata. You can also choose to avail the bus services from Kolkata to Malancha village via Babur Haat.

If you are a bird lover, keep an eye (read ear) for the chirps of different birds, while you take a walk on the clay paths of the villages. Other popular townships like Kolaghat, Garchumuk and Gadiara are also located nearby Deulti. If you travel by car, Deulti is situated at a distance of about 51 km from Howrah. Alternately, you can avail train services from Howrah station to Deulti station.

The small town of Taki, on the banks of river Ichamati, provides an experience like no other. Apart from being a favourite picnic spot, a boat ride on the river will give you a chance to get a closer view of Bangladesh. In fact, tourists of both India and Bangladesh embark on this journey, thus giving you a chance to meet Bangladeshi citizens. Apart from this amazing boat ride, you can also visit local attractions like ruins of Zamindar houses, Ramakrishna Mission, Kuleshwari Kali Temple, a three century old Jora Sahib Mandir and General Shankar Roy Chowdhury’s Adi Bari. A boat ride will take you to Henry’s island, and a rickshaw ride from Henry’s island will take you to Golpatar Jungle for the canopy walk. Taki is located at about 80 km from Kolkata by road. If travelling by train, you can take Hasnabad local from Sealdah to reach Taki Road Station.

15. Piyali island

For all those who do not want to visit the conventional Sunderbans in West Bengal, Piyali Islands come as a rescue retreat. A perfect amalgam of restfulness with Sunderbans is what describes this under penetrated getaway. A serene 75Km drive from Calcutta takes one this scenic beauty after crossing a bridge over the river Piyali which connects the island to the mainland. Since it is often named as Pseudo Sunderbans, therefore we can expect the vegetation, landscape and topography to be similar.

16. Jayrambati

Jayrambati is a quaint village in the Bankura district, popularised as an important pilgrimage point among followers of Sri Ramakrishna for being the place of residence of the Holy Mother Sri Sharada Devi. The village has a certain old-world charm to it and has several small temples all across the village, the most popular one however being the Sri Sri Maitri Mandir devoted to the Holy Mother. The religious aspect of the village is what draws most visitors to the village and is an integral part of the village's culture. The village has been an integral part and woven itself in the life of the holy mother Sri Sharada Devi, the village has witnessed several milestones in the life of the holy mother and has thus resultantly been an important source of pilgrimage for the ardent followers of Sri Sharada Devi.

The river town of Falta is what constitutes your ideal picnic destination or weekend gateway. Marked by the confluence of river Hoogly and Damodar on the south and river Rupnarayan and Hoogly on the north, this place has developed entirely on the banks of river Hoogly. Known for the beautiful farmhouse- The Bose Bigyan Mandir of famous Bengali scientist Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose. The grounds of this farmhouse allow picnic activities. When if Falta, do not miss the Falta jetty to watch ferries crossing the river and walks along the riverside. You can also go for a boat ride on the river. Nearby attractions include Diamond Harbor at half an hour’s drive, Raichak, Gadiara Geonkhali- all located at less than an hour’s drive. The historic town of Tamluk and Haldia are also in the vicinity. You can choose to drive to Falta, as the distance between Kolkata and Falta is only 51 km. Numerous buses are also available. If you are taking a train, get down at Diamond Harbor and avail a minibus to reach Falta.

The Indian Museum in Kolkata is the largest and the earliest multipurpose museum in India as well as the Asia-Pacific region, and also one of the oldest in the world. Established over 200 years ago by the Asiatic Society of Bengal, the museum is also known by the name the Imperial Museum. It houses a comprehensive collection of artifacts that narrate the social and cultural history of India from pre-historic times. Unlike most other museums in the country which are dedicated to specific themes or areas, the Indian Museum displays objects from a wide range of fields, from art and anthropology to zoology and botany. Indian museum, kolkata: history.

The origins of Indian Museum can be traced back to 1814 when it was founded by the Asiatic Society of Bengal. The Society was established in 1784 with the objective of spreading knowledge and preserving the natural and cultural heritage of mankind. Even though the idea of establishing a museum was put forward by the members in 1796, the Society could come up with its own building on Park Street only in 1808.

After another 6 years, Danish botanist by the name Nathaniel Wallich wrote a letter to the Society advocating the importance of a museum. He also volunteered to serve as the honorary curator and provide botanical specimens from his own collections. The museum was established in the premises of the Asiatic Society building and Wallich was appointed as the superintendent and the founder curator.  Back then, it was called the Asiatic Society Museum and later came to be known as the Imperial Museum.

Soon after its establishment, attempts were made to collect interesting artifacts and objects from across the country. Many donors, both Europeans and Indians, also gifted valuable items from their collections.

It was in 1867 that the foundation of the present building was laid in Chowringhee Road. The construction of the current three-storied building, which was designed by the famous architect W.L. Grandville, was completed in 1875 and the collections were moved from the Asiatic Society Building to the new one. On 1 st April 1878, the museum was opened to the public with two galleries. Over the years, several other galleries were added.

Today, the Imperial Museum founded by the Asiatic Society is known as the Indian Museum and is an institution that functions under India Government’s Ministry of Culture. It serves as one of the top tourist attractions in Kolkata and a haven for history and science enthusiasts.

Currently, the museum displays its vast collection of artifacts under 6 categories, namely Art, Anthropology, Archaeology, Zoology, Geology, and Economic Botany. It houses several galleries where enormous collections of international and indigenous objects are displayed, ranging from armors, antiques, and Mughal paintings to fossils, mummies, and skeletons.

There is a library at the museum, near the Coin Gallery, where you can find a huge collection of over 50,000 books, rare publications, and journals. You can access this collection upon paying a nominal membership fee. If you want to purchase souvenirs such as postcards, photographs, art albums, children’s books, etc., you will find them all in the Museum Shop.

The Indian Museum also conducts exhibitions throughout the year related to various fields, such as cinema, sculpture, photography, crafts, biological diversity, and literature, to mention a few.

• At the time of its inception, Nathaniel Wallich donated over 40 botanical specimens from his personal collection to the museum.
• The mummy housed within the Indian Museum is among the 6 Egyptian mummies in the country. It was a gift to the Asiatic Society in 1834 by a British officer by the name Lieutenant EC Archbold.

Indian Museum Kolkata, West Bengal

The Indian Museum is one of the most visited tourist attractions of Kolkata. Its collection depicts the history of India from prehistoric to the Islamic times. The building comprises of sections that are devoted particularly to Geology, Zoology, Industry, Archaeology, Art and Ethnology. The museum also houses the largest collection of coins from India as well as other places from around the world. It was founded in the year 1814, at the building of the Asiatic Society. The museum started welcoming guests from 1875.

The Indian museum has around 60 galleries and covers an area of about ten thousand square feet. The painting gallery is often regarded as the most interesting part of the museum. It displays the first painting on palm leaf manuscript. The collection also comprises of Mughal paintings that include portraits, book illustrations and scenes from Court. It also exhibits various miniature paintings from all over India like the famous Kalighatpatas, the folk art of Bengal and Mughal miniatures amongst others. Other than these, unique art by Abanindranath Tagore and Jamini Ray, among other various other artists is also exhibited. Besides this gallery, there are several specimens and exhibits of Indian and Trans-Indian origin. It boasts a collection of ornaments, weapons; statues and so on from various periods of History. Other notable exhibits include Egyptian mummies and sacred relics of Buddha.

The Indian Museum also publishes books, journals and folders containing paintings. It contains a library having fifty thousand books and journals. One can also view through these in the reading room. The museum also contains shop that sells items like Children’s books, statues and so on.

The Indian Museum is one of the most wonderful places that provide an insight into the world of Indian heritage and history.

History of the museum, our history, 1814 - 2022.

The history of the origin and the growth of the Indian Museum is one of the remarkable events towards the development of heritage and culture of India.Founded in 1814 at the cradle of the Asiatic Society of Bengal (at the present building of the Asiatic Society, 1 Park Street, Kolkata), Indian Museum is the earliest and the largest multipurpose Museum not only in the Indian subcontinent but also in the Asia-Pacific region of the world.

The movement, which was started in 1814, in fact was the beginning of a significant epoch initiating the socio-cultural and scientific achievements of the country. It is otherwise considered as the beginning of the modernity and the end of mediaeval era.

With the foundation of Indian Museum in 1814, the Museum movement started rolling in India and through the years from then, got a new fillip and great momentum. Since then, it has so magnificently developed and culminated into the fruitful existence of more than 400 museums in the country.

To appreciate the history of the origin and growth of the Indian Museum we are to travel back to the last quarter of the 18th century when Sir William Jones a profound scholar devoted his life to the service of India, founded the Asiatic Society in 1784 in Kolkata.

The role of the Asiatic Society was to form a learning centre for the development of art and culture pertaining to the socio-cultural activities, entertaining people, disseminating knowledge and preserving the cultural as well as natural heritage of mankind for posterity within the geographical limits of Asia.

Sir William Jones, the founder of the Asiatic Society, however, in his inaugural address did not refer to the foundation of a museum as part of the activities of the society.

In 1796 the members of the Asiatic Society conceived an idea of establishing a Museum at a suitable place for the reception and preservation of the objects whatever it is performed by man or produced by nature.

The idea got shape in the beginning of 1808 when society found itself in a position to occupy its premises erected at the corner of Park Street on a land granted by the Government.

Six years later a definite effort was made to give effect to the intention to establish a museum when, Dr Nathanial Wallich, a Danish botanist, who had been taken prisoner at the siege of Serampur, Hooghly, but was released by the Government in recognition of his scientific attainments, wrote a letter to the society in which he strongly advocated the formation of a Museum and offered a proposal to the society not only to act as honorary curator of the proposed Museum but also to supply duplicates from his own valuable collections.

The proposal found ready acceptance with the members of the society and it was determined to establish Society Museum at the premises of the Asiatic Society of Bengal.

Thus a museum, under the guidance of Dr Nathanial Wallich was established on 2 February 1814 at the Asiatic Society. He was appointed as Honorary Curator of the Oriental Museum of the Asiatic Society.

Interesting and curious objects were collected from various parts of the country. A list of gifts consisted of 174 items were donated by 27 European donors in the year 1816. The individual collectors were Col. Stewart, Dr Tytler, General Mackenjzie, Mr Bryan Hodgson, Capt. Gillon.

Indian contributors started gifting objects to the Museum. Out of 49 donors of the list six donors were Baboo Ram Comul Sen, Kali Kissen Bahadoor, Moharaja Radhacant Deb, Mathuranath Mullick, Sivachandra Doss, and her Highness Begam Sambroo.

In 1837, James Prinsep, Secretary of the Society wrote to the Government to adopt proposition of the Society for the formation of a National Museum at the cost of the State.

Dr Helfer and other scientific officers decided to found a museum of economic geology in Calcutta; this museum was actually opened in 1840. The museum of economic geology thus constituted continued to occupy the premises of the Society till 1856 when the portion of the collection owned by the Government of India was removed and housed at no. 1 Hasting Street in connection with the Geological Survey of India.

In 1856, the members of the society decided to submit a memorial to the Government of India for the establishment of an Imperial Museum at Calcutta. Two years later a representation was submitted to the Government of India in which the society pressed for the foundation of an Imperial Museum at Calcutta. The Government of India recognized its duty to establish an Imperial Museum in the Metropolis for the collection and exposition of specimens of natural history, physical, economical and historical, etc.

In 1858, The Geological Museum was amalgamated with that of the Geological Survey of India.

In 1862, the Government of India announced the foundation of a Public Museum at Calcutta which might be taken into consideration with the practical realisation.

Negotiations between the Government of India and the Asiatic Society were protracted till the middle on the year 1865 and it was decided that the Society should make over to the Board of Trustees for the proposed Museum for the zoological, geological, and archaeological collections and in this connection Government of India would provide a suitable accommodation for the Society in the Museum building.

Afterwards it was realized that the building as planned could not possibly find accommodation for the Asiatic Society in addition to the Geological Survey of India and the Natural History Museum, the society also expressed its unwillingness to enter a building where accommodation was insufficient and freedom of action was liable to be cramped.

In 1867 the foundation of the present building of the Indian Museum was thus laid on the finest site of Chowringhee in front of small Cause Court. In 1875, the present Museum building on Chowringhee, designed by W. L. Grandville was completed. From 1814 to 1878 the museum was at the Asiatic Society of Park Street, Kolkata. After the completion of the construction of the new building at Chowringhee Road, the Society Museum was shifted from the Asiatic Society to the present building and it was thrown open to the public with two galleries on 1 April 1878. The Archaeology gallery and bird gallery of the Zoological Section had been declared open to public in the present building.

Though in the beginning Indian Museum was opened with two galleries later on it was transformed into a multipurpose Institution where multi-disciplinary objects have been displayed in its six sections, viz. Art, Archaeology, Anthropology, Zoology, Geology, and Botany.

The museum which was known in the beginning as the “Asiatic Society Museum” subsequently came to be known as the “Imperial Museum” later familiarized as the  “Indian Museum” . The museum is more familiar by the name Jadughar or Ajabghar among the visitors.

From the days of the Asiatic Museum, this institution has been rendering its services to the people of India as an epitome of art and culture of India. The role of Indian Museum witnesses the socio-cultural harmony between the Museum and the society.

As a consequence the museum has developed into the largest institution of its kind of the country portraying the legacy and pride of the nation and also being highlighted as one of the pioneering National Institutions in the Constitution of the Republic of India.

The Museum Directorate has three main cultural sections namely, Art, Archaeology, and Anthropology together with eight co-ordinating service units such as Preservation, Publication, Photography, Presentation, Modelling, Education, Library, and Security.

The Museum has its own Medical unit to provide preliminary medical services to all the staffs of the organisation.

The administrative control of the cultural sections, viz. Art, Archaeology, and Anthropology along with the other co-ordinating units/sections rests with the Board of Trustees under the Directorate Office of Indian Museum.

This is an institution which is under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.
