With the famed Bollywood movie- Zindagi na milegi dobara, Spain has been steadily climbing up the travel bucket list charts of many Indians. The picturesque cobblestone streets, the magic of Alhambra and Alcazar of Seville , the blue hues of the Spanish coast – they make a lovely Spanish holiday for all kinds of travelers. Plaza de espana in Seviile, Spain

My research for the Spain tourist visa started with a doubt – was this visa the same as the Schengen tourist visa? Google this and you get a BLS visa application site with two headings – short-stay visa and national visa. Go further in, it says tourist visa and takes you to a Spanish website that seems to offer Schengen visa. It took me a few readings on various websites to realize that the Spain tourist visa was the same as Schengen visa for Indians.

My first visit to Europe took me across several countries and involved a multiple-entry Schengen visa that I got through the French embassy and VFS Global. With Kuoni travel involved, it seemed like a breeze – all I had to do was to follow the documentation requirement that the tour agency gave me and voila – Visa granted! This time around, I chose to apply on my own – solely through the Spanish consulate and BLS India . There were several doubts and clarifications that I sought but in the end – it was a success with me getting my Schengen visa for Spain in less than a week.

This blog post is all about helping you figure the maze of applying for a Schengen visa for Spain from India. I will be taking you through the entire process, explaining the Spain tourist visa requirements, how and where you need to get your appointments and what to keep in mind for a successful visa stamp from Spain. The post also, includes the costs and the details on the Schengen visa fee for Indians.

In this Schengen visa guide, I have also, included information and tips to help you apply for Schengen visa to these other countries. About Schengen Visas and countries included

As I discovered Spain tourist visa is the same as a Schengen Visa . You will see me use these two terms interchangeably throughout this article. That said – I feel it is prudent to start with a quick introduction to what exactly are Schengen visas and where exactly are they valid.

One of the countries in the Schengen Visa list is Switzerland

There are 28 countries in the Schengen visa list . These countries have an understanding of border control or rather seamless borders. Obtaining a Schengen visa allows you a short visit of 90 days in these Schengen states (all to be done within a 180 days period). Here is the list of these Schengen visa countries –

  • Bulgaria (recent addition)
  • Czech Republic
  • Liechtenstein
  • Netherlands
  • Romania (recent addition)
  • Switzerland

Where can you get Spain tourist visa for Indians?

For most countries, the application for Schengen visa in India is through VFS Global . In fact, for my first Europe trip in 2014 – 15, I applied for my Schengen visa at VFS Global. At that time, even Spanish visa for Indians was done through them.

However, that has changed for Spain Schengen visa and this time, I had to apply through BLS International.

The Spain tourist visa for Indians allows you access to Granada and all the other Spanish cities

The BLS India visa application centers for Spain visas are in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Kochi, Puducherry, Chandigarh and Jalandhar. You need to book an appointment at any of these centers by clicking through this link .

Alternatively, you have an option to book a Doorstep service where the documents, application and biometrics can be collected from your home or office. There is an additional charge for this and you need to get in touch with BLS through their contact form found he r e. I honestly, do not know how this works as I went ahead with an appointment at the physical office in Bengaluru.

A tip here is to book a Schengen visa appointment at least a month prior to your travel dates to buffer any unforeseen delays owing to improper documentation or even public holidays. There are limited slots per day. Also, keep sufficient time – say around 5 days to gather all your documents for the BLS visa application for Spain. In my case, I had over a week from the time I booked my BLS Spain visa appointment to the actual submission and trust me, this really helped get all my documents in place.

P.S: This is the same if you are applying through VFS Global for any other Schengen visa. Keep at least a week’s buffer to gather the documents and book your appointment at least a month prior to your travel dates.

What are the Spain visa fees for Indians? (Cost of Schengen visa)

The cost of a Spain Schengen tourist visa for Indians in 2024 is INR 7275 per passport . This is the base fee that is similar to almost all Schengen visas. In addition to this fee for Spanish visa for Indians, you will need to be prepared to spend on the following –

  • BLS Visa service fee – INR 1537 per passport
  • Courier Fee – INR 600 per passport (if you wish, you can avoid this and pick up your passport at the BLS international center)
  • SMS Fee – INR 200 per passport (optional, the SMS intimates you on the status of your passport, visa and courier. You can also, track this online for free)
  • Call back service (STS) – INR 350. I am not sure if this is mandatory but I wasn’t asked for an option and it was added to my bill
  • Courier Assurance – INR 145. Again not sure if this is required but it was added to the bill.

The total cost of Schengen visa from India for Spain came up to INR 10107 per passport. This amount has to be paid at the counter in BLS International when you submit your documents. Note that this payment for Spain tourist visa can only be made in cash . They do not accept cards or UPI payments.

Once you pay, don’t forget to collect your receipt with the barcode. This barcode number is your Schengen visa tracking ID – used to track or refer to your application.

Spain tourist visa requirements (Key documents for Schengen visa application from India)

To be honest, this is where your maximum time and focus will be when applying for a Schengen visa for any country. The first time around too, I spent time gathering this list. Every document in the list needs to be printed or photocopied – which honestly is a huge waste of paper.

In my case, since we were applying for a family Schengen visa, the amount of paperwork was triple. Note that you have to follow this document list for every single passport that you are submitting. There is no shortcut to this.

Documents for Schengen visa for Indians

While the Schengen visa requirements for Indians are almost the same across the countries, you must always check the specific country website for the finer details . The Spain tourist visa requirements clearly state that they would like the photocopies to be printed in a front and back manner. (Thank heaven! Less use of paper). The Netherlands visa on the other hand, I believe requires you to fill the Schengen form online.

Here are the key documents required for the Spain Schengen visa for Indian tourists. Every document in the list below is mandatory.

1. Schengen Visa Application form – downloaded from the Spain consulate website

The Spain tourist visa form will have the headings in English and Spanish. Do not use any other country’s Schengen visa form.

Fill in the details exactly as they are in your passport. There is a section on whether you have family in any of the EU nations. Fill this only if you are visiting them or are being sponsored by them. Else skip it.

I recommend a dummy form to be filled out first so that you do not make mistakes in the final form. I also, suggest that you fill this form right at the end – after you have gathered all your documents so that the particulars included are clear.

Use this link to download the Schengen visa form for other countries.

2. Recent and unexpired passport

A valid Indian passport is one of the Schengen and Spain tourist visa requirements

Your Indian passport should has a validity of at least 6 months after your planned date of departure from Spain. A minimum of 2 blank pages has to be there. Take a copy of this for your reference before you submit the original to BLS.

3. Copies of past travel visas or stamps

If you have traveled in the past, you should take photocopies of those visas and travel stamps. Include your old passport if required – especially if you have had a UK, Schengen or US Visa included It adds weight to your application for the Spain tourist visa.

Along with the copies of the old stamps, please carry your last expired passport with you. For both my Schengen tourist visa applications (old and the most recent one), the officer attached the old passport along with my new passport and sent it for processing.

4. The Latest Photograph clicked in a specific format

Schengen passport-sized photographs require a non-smiling face with a full face cover against a white background. If you are wearing spectacles, you will have to remove those or ensure they do not have reflective glass. You need only one – which has to be pasted on the Schengen visa application for Indians.

5. Travel medical insurance

One of the mandates for the Spain tourist visa for Indians is travel medical insurance. In fact, they have two recommended options for the best Schengen visa travel insurance – TATA AIG travel insurance and Reliance. Make sure your policy covers repatriation costs for medical reasons or death, as well as for urgent healthcare and/or emergency hospital treatment for the entire stay.

A key requirement for the Schengen visa for Indian tourists is that the insurance coverage is at least €30,000 or an equivalent amount in Indian rupees.

6. Flight bookings

You have to include a copy of your flight bookings in this docket of Schengen visa documents for Indians. To quote the line from the Spain tourist visa website – “It is advisable not to buy the air ticket until the visa has been granted.” This essentially means that you can get dummy tickets for your trip.

Dummy tickets are air tickets that are blocked in your name for a few days. However, they are not confirmed till you pay for them. A Dummy ticket will have a relevant PNR number and can be issued by a travel agent.

When I sought these tickets, I came by conflicting suggestions where one travel agent said that your visa can get rejected. This is when I called the BLS Spain tourist visa helpline and confirmed with them that the Dummy tickets could be included in the Schengen visa application. I went ahead with the same as it reduced the risk of losing money in case my visa did not come on time.

Alternately, you can book refundable fares (which cost slightly higher) and submit the proof of travel.

7. Proof of stay – hotel vouchers or resident address.

Hotel vouchers or Airbnb bookings are absolutely fine. You can use Booking.com to book at zero advance for the hotels and submit the vouchers for the purpose of Schengen visa for Spain or any other country.

Also, note that you have to show hotel bookings for the entire duration of the stay. In my case, my rough itinerary included at least three places and hence, I had to book three hotels to show the same. If you are visiting any other Schengen country from Spain or before Spain, then you need to show hotel vouchers in that country.

In case you are staying with relatives, you need to get an invite letter from them. Note though that the invitation letter has to be issued by the Spanish police. Other Schengen countries have similar mandates. Do check the relevant websites for this particular case scenario.

Our last trip to Europe also, took us to Italy

8. Financial documents to be included for the Schengen tourist visa for applicants.

Spain or any of the Schengen countries need you to show that you are economically sound enough to handle the expenses of the trip and return back home. For this, you need to include the following –

8.a) Bank statements

You need six months of your savings account statement – duly stamped and sealed by the bank. Most banks like ICICI bank and HDFC bank are happy to stamp and seal your printouts. Alternately, you can just go to the bank and ask them to provide the same.

You also, need to ensure that you have a minimum balance of INR 1,00,000 in your account for a 10-12 day trip . This is per person.

In case you are going as a family or have a sponsor, besides your statement, you need to attach a similar statement from your sponsor (stamped and sealed). For a family travel, between your statement and that of your better half, you need to ensure that the balance showcased in your statements covers the entire family. (kids or parents included)

Note that for the Spain tourist visa, they only accept savings account statements. They were not interested in the fixed deposit statement or proof.

8.b) Income tax returns (ITR-V or Form 16) for the last two years

If you have a sponsor, ensure you include their statement as well as yours.

8.c) Photocopy of the Permanent Account Number (PAN) card

For kids and students who do not have this, some Schengen countries ask for school or college ID cards along with a letter from the school stating that they are a student there and are going on a vacation with their parents. I took this for my daughter but the Spain tourist visa application did not need it.

8.d) Salary slips for the last three months

This is pretty straightforward for the salaried individual. In fact, during my first Europe trip I was working as a full time employee and it was a breeze. This time around, being a freelancer landed me in a tricky situation.

Given that I do not have a registered company, I did not want to declare myself as a business owner. A business owner would have to provide GST details, company registration etc. I could have declared myself as a travel writer in the cover letter with proof of invites and work for various tourism boards. However, since this was a self-funded vacation and not a sponsored tour, I decided to keep it simple and easy  I just declared myself as a dependent and added my hubby as a sponsor. This is where the next document came handy for both me and my daughter.

8.e) Sponsor letter to be included in the application of Schengen visa for Indians

Sponsor letter for application of Schengen visa for Indians

Here is a copy of the letter that I submitted with my application as well as that of my daughter. It was signed by my sponsor (hubby in my case). As you can see, it details out the relationship, purpose of travel, sponsor finance arrangements and itinerary. You can edit the same based on your requirements.

This sponsor letter format can be used across all Schengen applications.

8.f) Letter of employment and leave

If you are a salaried employee, you need to get a letter from your organization on their letterhead stating that you have been employed in the organization from x date and are going on leave for a visit to Spain.

I got a similar one done from my daughter’s school and also, included her ID card as proof of student. While the BLS visa for Spain took only her ID card copy, I am told that the French consulate insists on the letter.

9) Copy of payment of Schengen visa fee for Indians

This will be provided by the BLS team when you submit the documents.

10) Cover letter

Cover Letter for Spain Schengen visa application for Indians

Last but not least in the Spain tourist visa checklist, is a strong cover letter that details your purpose, itinerary and the documents that you are including in your Schengen visa application. The above image is the cover letter that I included in my visa application for Spain. You can use the same and edit as required for your purpose.

This cover letter is mandatory for all Schengen visa applications from India.

Tips for the Spain tourist visa appointment

Having done my Schengen visa appointment twice, here are some handy tips that you need to keep in mind while booking and preparing for the same.

  • Book for a date at least a month before you travel date. I have already covered details on why this is a better option.
  • When booking a Schengen visa appointment, you can apply as an individual or a family. Picking a family Schengen visa appointment ensures that all the passports and documents are presented in one single bundle.
  • Every appointment slot is for 15 minutes. Make sure you are at the BLS center 15 minutes prior to your slot.
  • There is a Spain tourist visa appointment fee you need to pay. This is around INR 1500 per person. The payment has to be made online while booking your slot
  • There is a privilege counter which includes a one-on-one service. You can book this VIP appointment and you get access to photocopy machines, internet etc along with guidance. This is charged higher. If you have all your documents in place, then I don’t think you should opt for this. It has no bearing on whether you get your Spain tourist visa or not
  • Keep a gap of at least five days before your appointment to gather your documents.
  • Prepare a proper docket for every passport that you are submitting. I kept a Spain tourist visa checklist in front of me and arranged the documents in an order. While stapling the pages of your photocopy, keep each document separate. That is staple only the copies of the passport together, do not staple them with your tax documents.
  • Carry a small stationery kit with a stapler, glue stick and a pen
  • Don’t forget to carry cash for your Spain tourist visa fees to be paid at BLS International.
  • After your documents are cleared, you have to go to biometrics section where they will take a photo of you and register the fingerprints of both hands.
  • After the submission of documents, make sure you have the Schengen visa fee receipt with you. This will have a barcode to check your Schengen visa status online.

Too big for my clogs - Keukehof gardens in Holland - one of the places that I visited on my first Schengen tourist visa

What is the typical Spain tourist visa processing time?

If your documents are in order, you should be able to get your tourist visa for Spain within 15 working days from the date of submission. I, in fact, got it within five working days. In case there is something missing or needs clarification, then the consulate will either email or call you.

15 business days are typically the Schengen visa processing time from India for most countries.

Visiting other Europe Schengen Visa countries

It is common to combine a visit to Spain with a few other European countries. As long as they belong to the Schengen union, you do not need a separate visa for these. Note though – there are rules to decide which country and consulate you have to apply to for Schengen visa in India.

  • The country where you are going to spend maximum time will take priority. It does not necessarily have to be the port of entry. The first time I applied for a Schengen tourist visa, I was visiting 8 countries and though my first entry was The Netherlands, I applied for my visa through the French embassy as I had maximum stay here. I could have applied to Switzerland or Italy as I had the same number of days in these countries but this is where rule two below comes into play.
  • If you have the same number of days in more than one country, then the first country that you are visiting in that list will be the one where you have to apply for your visa. In the order of my journey during the first Europe trip, it was France, then Switzerland and Italy.

The Spain tourist visa for Indians is the same Schengen visa that allows you to visit other European countries like Italy

Types of Schengen tourist visa for Indians

Schengen tourist visas are of four types

  • Type A Visa is the Schengen transit visa that you will need if you are transiting through Schengen nations. These only allow you to disembark at the airport but not leave the airport.
  • LTV visas or Limited Territorial validity visas allow you to visit limited Schengen countries that you have applied for within a 180 day period for a maximum stay of 90 days in total.
  • Type C Schengen Visa allows you to travel across all Schengen nations for a maximum period of 90 days – within a 180-day period. This is what I got for both my trips.
  • Type D Visas are long stay visas for beyond 90 days. Used by students or business travelers. This is not in the scope of our discussion on how to get Schengen visa in India for visiting Europe on a holiday.

Besides this, your Europe tourist visa from India will have another stamp that mentions single entry or multiple entry . Multiple-entry visa means you can enter any Schengen states multiple times within the 180-day validity period. Single entry is only for one single entry during the stipulated time.

Both times, I got a multiple-entry Schengen visa. Your Schengen visa form usually has an option to choose this. Also, there is no difference in the Schengen visa multiple entry cost and single entry cost. Even the Schengen visa processing time for Indians for either of these is the same.

How long is the Schengen Visa for Indians valid?

Usually the validity of the first-time Schengen Visa is between one month to six months – depending on your itinerary. For me, the first Schengen visa was valid for six months as I was visiting multiple countries. This time around for the Spain visa for Indian tourists, I was given a validity of one month as I had a clear itinerary of only one country.

You can get longer Schengen visas provided you have used the short-stay Schengen visas multiple times in subsequent years. For example, 1-year multiple-entry Schengen visa is granted if you have applied for and used your short-stay visas at least three times in the last two years. Remember this does not include three Schengen stays using the same 90-day stay period. You should have applied afresh thrice and used each visa once in the last two years.

Similarly, if you have applied twice for your one-year visa in the last 2 years, you get an extended Schengen permit of 3 years or more.

Westminster Abbey in UK - this cannot be visited on a Schengen visa

Isn’t UK a part of the Schengen visa scheme?

No, United Kingdom is not a part of the Schengen nations. You have to get a separate visa for entering UK

Is it possible to cancel or reschedule the Spain tourist visa appointment at BLS International?

If for some unforeseen situation, you have to change your appointment date, you can reschedule it for free on the BLS website. You can even cancel your appointment but if you do so, you will not be refunded the Visa appointment fee paid already.

Popular belief is that France is the easiest country to get a schengen visa for Indians

Which is the easiest Schengen visa country to apply for as an Indian?

France and Switzerland are believed to be the easiest Schengen visa countries. I did not have any issues with a Spain tourist visa either. You just need to have the right paperwork to get your visa through.

What if I want to go to UK and Spain or any other Schengen countries in the same trip?

This was exactly my situation during my first Europe trip. I planned a visit to both – UK and the rest of Europe. Since I was entering UK first, I applied for UK tourist visa first and only after I got the same, I applied for Schengen Visa through France.

Whichever is your port of entry first, (UK or Schengen), you need to apply for that visa at the earliest. Remember to buffer enough time for both the visa applications. The average Schengen visa processing time from India is 15 days. UK visas for Indians on the other hand, might take a little more time.

I will keep updating this blog post regularly to give you the latest on Spain visa for Indians and other Schengen visas. Do share the post if you find it useful and feel free to ask any queries that you might have in the comments below.

Spain Tourist Visa: Who Needs One & How to Get It

Spain tourist visa

Would you like to enter and visit Spain? Then most likely you will need a tourist visa . In this article we will explore everything you need to know about Schengen visas: if you actually need to apply for one, how to do it step by step, requirements and more!

What is a tourist visa in Spain?

A tourist visa is the term that foreigners usually use to refer to a Schengen visa ; that is, the visa that allows citizens from outside the EU to travel, enter and visit this region.

If you want to visit Spain for a maximum of 90 days, you must apply for a Schengen tourist visa .

Nevertheless, this document or permission is not granted for any specific country: you apply for a visa that allows you to enter all the 25 countries that share a common border policy within the European Union .

Also, bear in mind that according to your country of origin, it is possible that you are not required to get this tourist or Schengen visa . As long as your country and Spain have a double treaty agreement, you can enter the country without one ( but still meeting the requirements ).

Where and how can I apply for it?

The Schengen visa allows you to travel within the whole area without problems.

But if you are just visiting one specific country, then you will have to attend its embassy or consulate in your country of origin to apply for your Schengen tourist visa .

But what happens if I am visiting more than one country within those 90 days?

Then you must apply at the consulte or embassy of the country you will spend more nights at (or of that which constitutes the first point of entry if you are spending equal nights in all your destinations).

You will basically need to make an appointment with the consulate to register your biometric data and to submit all the required documents, which we explore below.

Main requirements

On the day of the appointment at the consulate or embassy, you must bring and submit:

  • Your visa application form , properly completed. You can download a model here .
  • Valid passport (which can’t expire beyond 3 months after leaving the Schengen Area).
  • Airline reservation tickets (which must be round trip flights), demonstrating entry and exiting of the Schengen area.
  • Proof of accommodation or invitation letter .
  • Proof of financial means to sustain yourself in the country during the time of your visit (via bank statement); including last tax return if you are self-employed and letter of employment if not.
  • Travel insurance . Here you can find the main providers .
  • Two recent ID photos .
  • Visa fee , which varies according to the specific consulate (but can be around € 80).

When should you apply for your tourist visa for Spain?

You can’t apply earlier than 180 before your planned entry into the country, but that same application must be made a minimum of 3 weeks before your departure .

Despite the process being quite fast, it can take up to 15 working days to receive your visa response.

Nevertheless, in some cases the application can take longer , so our recommendation is that you start as soon as possible within those 6 months.

Who needs a Spain Tourist Visa?

Basically, non-EU citizens from those countries that do not have visa-free entry into Spain , like China, Indica, African countries, and Russia.

You can find the complete list of countries that must apply for a Schengen visa to enter the Spanish territory here.

On the other hand, there are other countries that have a visa-free agreement , like the US, Brazil, or Canada, that don’t need a visa.

This exception just applies to nationals of those countries , not to residents.

But be careful!

In 2021 the new ETIAS system will be implemented , and from then on all non-European Union citizens will have to request a visa online. Learn how here .

How long can I stay in the country with a tourist or Schengen visa?

You can stay up to a maximum of 3 months (90 days in total) in the country within a period of 180 days.

This is called the “ 90-day rule ”, and it applies to all countries within the Schengen Area .

This means that, if you spent 90 days in Spain but wish to stay longer, you will have two options:

  • You can either travel to any non-EU country and stay there for 3 extra months, then travel back to Spain
  • Or apply for any of the residence permits that can be obtained directly from Spain. Find the complete list of those residencies here .

If you are going to stay for the long run, it is crucial that you understand this last point, as many residencies must be applied from your country of origin (like the non-lucrative visa).

Can I extend my Schengen visa while being within the Schengen Area?

Even though the situations in which you can do it are limited, it is indeed possible to extend the duration of your tourist visa .

In that sense, only for the following reasons will that extension be available:

  • If you have a single-entry short-stay visa and have made a late entry to the Schengen area (meaning days after the visa became valid).
  • Due to humanitarian reasons and if the extension will help you avoid hardship, like keep receiving any kind of medical treatment or giving support to a relative going through a harsh situation.
  • If your home country is suffering any sudden situatio n (force majeure), like a conflict or war.
  • Personal reasons of major importance (even though it is unlikely you will be granted the extension in this case).

You must remain in that same country after you finish your extension application.

This application can last several days (time during which you don’t need to leave the country). In case the extension gets rejected, you will have a maximum of 2 days to leave.

Types of Schengen visas

As we have mentioned, a tourist visa is in fact a Schengen visa, a document that is equally valid for the different countries within the Schengen Area.

In that sense, we can find the following Schengen visas :

Business visa

If you are visiting Spain for less than 90 days for business reasons (like attending a business event, having certain meetings with your prospective clients, etc.) you must request a business visa .

If this is the case, the documents to be submitted will vary accordingly:

  • You will have to include on your application the invitation letter from the Spanish company you are meeting with.
  • If, on the other hand, you are attending any kind of event or fair, you must include the entry tickets .
  • A certification from your company or employer demonstrating that they allow you to embark on this business trip.

Airport transit visa (type A)

The airport transit visa will be requested if the foreigner is traveling to a different country but must stop in Spain in between (for example, to take a different plane that gets her to the final destination).

If you are from one of the following countries, you will need to get your airport transit visa in order to go through Spain : Cameroon, the Republic of Congo, Ivory Coast, Cuba, Djibouti, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, India, Liberia, Mali, Sierra Leone, Syria, Togo, Yemen, and Palestina.

Nevertheless, being a permanent United States resident with any of the before mentioned nationalities eliminates the need to get this visa.

Furthermore, nationals from the following countries need an airport transit visa to go through any of the Schengen countries : Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Iran, Irak, Nigeria, Pakistán, Somalia y Sri Lanka.

Student visa

In case you are enrolling in any kind of course or study in the country taking less than 3 months, you will have to get a student visa.

In that case, it will be required to include the acceptance letter from the university or school in which you are going to study.

Regular tourist visa

This is the most common type of Schengen visa, the one granted to those who want to visit the country for tourism or leisure activities .

Here is a summary of the main questions foreigners wishing to visit Spain ask themselves more frequently:

What happens if my visa application gets rejected?

If that is the case, you have two different options :

  • If the reason that got your application is clear and you agree with it, you can formalize a new application but solving that what caused the rejection.
  • On the other hand, if you feel everything was right and no document was missing, you can initiate an appeal . But, again, follow with path only if you think there has been a mistake.

Can I work in Spain with a tourist visa?

No, in order to work in Spain you need a regular work permit .

You can just meet with your clients or do any other similar type of business activity in case you hold a business visa.

Can I join my relatives with my tourist visa?

No, you are allowed to visit them during the permitted 90 days, but once that period comes to an end you must leave the country.

So even though you have family members in the country, you can’t stay for the long run with them .

If that is your intention, you must apply for a family reunification visa or for a residence permit as an EU relative (if that is the case).

How to apply for Spain Schengen visa from India

How to apply for Spain Schengen visa from India

Most Indians who are planning to visit Spain will need a visa to do so. If you are looking to apply for a visa to Spain in India, you should strongly consider a Schengen visa, which will allow you to visit Spain as well as the rest of the 26 countries in the Schengen area. Indians who receive a Spanish Schengen visa will be able to spend up to 90 days in Spain. In addition, they will be able to travel outside of Spain throughout neighboring France and elsewhere in Europe. Today’s blog will help you figure out how to obtain a Spain Schengen visa from India. Learn the ins and outs of the Schengen Spain visa application process, including where to apply for your visa, how much it will cost, and for the answer to the question “how can Indians apply for a long-term visa to Spain,” among many others!

  • The first step of the Spain visa application process for Indian applicants involves determining dates of travel. Indians who are applying for a Schengen visa should therefore try to plan ahead a bit, so that they receive a visa before they need to travel to Spain.
  • While you do not have to know the exact dates of your Spanish trip, you should think about when you want to travel so that you’re not applying too late (keep in mind that you will need to submit your application no earlier than 15 weekdays before you intend to travel, and not more than three months before).
  • When you apply for your Spain visa from India, you will need to select the “type” of Schengen visa that you need.
  • The Schengen visa type you select should reflect your primary reason for making the trip. For example, if you are traveling to Spain purely for touristic reasons (such as to experience a culinary tour of the Basque region, go museum-hopping around Madrid, or visit the beaches of Barcelona) you should apply for a Schengen Tourist visa to Spain. Alternatively, if you are traveling because you have business in the country, you should apply for a Schengen Business visa to Spain.
  • The entire list of available Schengen visa types is accessible here .
  • After you select your visa “type” you will need to select your visa entry category. The visa entry category that you select will determine the number of times you can enter, exit, and re-enter Spain (and the Schengen area in general).
  • If you are planning on entering Spain and remaining in the Schengen area until your visa expires, you may be satisfied with a single-entry Schengen visa to Spain. However, keep in mind that if you obtain this visa, you will not be able to re-enter Spain once you exit it (even if your visa has yet to expire when you seek to re-enter).
  • If you want a bit more flexibility when it comes to traveling in and out of the Schengen area, you might consider applying for a double entry visa, as this will allow you to re-enter Spain one time if you leave it. For example, if you have a double-entry Spanish visa, you could theoretically fly into Madrid from New Delhi, spend a month in Spain, return to India, and then re-enter Spain one final time. In this scenario, if you leave Spain after your second entry, you will not be allowed back in—even if you still have time left on your visa.
  • Finally, applicants who intend to travel back and forth between India and Spain throughout their Schengen visa validity period should pursue a multiple-entry Schengen visa, which will allow them to enter, exit, and re-enter the Schengen area as many times as they want (so long as there visa remains valid).
  • Would-be travelers to the Schengen area who are wondering where to apply for the Spain visa in India should identify the nearest Spanish consulate, embassy, or visa application center responsible for processing Schengen visas—this is the entity they will apply through.
  • Where to apply for the Schengen Spain visa in India depends on where you are located. Indians can typically apply through the Spanish Embassy in New Delhi or through centers located in major cities including Ahmedabad, Bangaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kochi, or Mumbai.
  • Indian passport.
  • Passport photos (2).
  • Schengen visa application form.
  • Proof of accommodation (i.e. that you have a place to stay once you arrive in Spain).
  • Proof of finances (i.e. that you have enough money to afford your trip and time in Spain).
  • Proof of travel medical insurance.
  • Proof of return (i.e. that you will leave the country when it is time for you to do so).
  • Spain visa fees India applicants (80 EUR for most applicants).
  • Biometric information (photos and fingerprints).
  • In addition to the above documents, you will need to submit whichever supplemental documents correspond to the specific type of visa you are applying for. For example, if you are applying for a “Visiting Family and Friends” visa to Spain, you will have to supply an invitation letter from the person you are visiting in Spain.
  • For a complete list of Spain visa requirements for India citizens and residents, click here .
  • Please note that any documents you submit as part of your Schengen visa requirements will likely only be accepted if they are written in either Spanish or English (or another European language). Alternatively, you may submit documents in a different language, provided you submit them alongside official translations (into those two languages).
  •  For example, if you attempt to submit an invitation letter as part of your supplemental documents for a “Visiting Family and Friends” Schengen visa to Spain, and it is written in Hindi, you may have to include a translation of that letter into Spanish.
  • For more information on the language requirements for Spanish Schengen visa applications from India, please contact us here .
  • Access the universal Schengen form (which is also the Spain visa application form) here .
  • Download, fill out, print out, and sign the above form, which you will submit (alongside the rest of your required documents and materials) at your Schengen visa appointment.
  • You will have to make a Schengen visa appointment at the Spanish consulate, embassy, or visa application center that you are applying through in India. The appointment fulfills the requirement that you apply for your visa in person (a requirement that applies with few exceptions to all Indian visa applicants).
  • Please note that Indians who are applying through the Spanish Embassy in New Delhi traditionally must make appointment a month in advance of traveling to Spain.
  • Contact the specific entity you are applying through to find out if you need an appointment. For help with this, contact us here .
  • When you apply for a visa to Spain in India, you will have to go in-person to a visa appointment at your application destination.
  • At your appointment, you will formally submit your Spain visa application form, have your biometric information collected, and attend a brief interview.
  • Additionally, those who have not already paid their Spain visa fees for Indian applicants will do so at this appointment. Certain applicants, including most Indian students, will be exempt from fees (or subject to reduced ones). For more information on what you will have to pay, click here .
  • If you travel frequently between India and Spain, you may be able to avoid having to appear for an in-person interview if you have submitted your biometric information on a previous Schengen visa application (i.e. within the past five years of applying for your most recent Spanish visa). However, this is rare, as almost all Indians—regardless of the frequency of their Schengen travel—are asked to attend an in-person appointment at the embassy, consulate, or center they are applying through.
  • Indian applicants can expect to receive their Schengen visa to Spain around two weeks after formally applying. Some applications, however, can take between 30-60 days to be processed.
  • If you are rejected for a Spanish Schengen visa from India, you are entitled to appeal the decision. For a general overview of the Schengen visa appeal process, click here .

All travellers need to obtain the Health Control Form (FCS) to enter Spain. To aid in your application, sometimes additional documents may be needed.

For an employer with a work contract:

  • Evidence of employment status.
  • Current bank statement of the latest six months.
  • Leave permission from the employer.
  • Income tax return.

For self-employed visitors:

  • A copy of the business license.
  • Bank statement of last six months.

For students:

  • Proof of university or college enrollment.

For minors:

  • Birth certificate.
  • Letter of consent from parents.
  • Passport copies of both parents/legal guardians.
  • A notarized parental authorization signed by both parents/guardians if the minor will be traveling alone.

Spain tourist visa application rejection

If your Spain Visa application is rejected and you are not granted a visa, you will receive an explanation letter explaining why your application has been rejected.

In this situation there are two options:

  • Change one thing and create an application that is more efficient to avoid the mistakes you made previously and improve your position.
  • You can also write an appeal letter if you believe that your visa application was rejected unfairly or due to an error. It is essential to have a solid base for writing this letter, and you must provide evidence to support your argument.

Processing time for visas

It can take anywhere from one to two weeks, or 10 working days to take care of the visa application. The time to process a visa can also extend up to 30 – 60 days in some cases.

The extension could occur during times when the embassy in which you file the application has received numerous requests for visa processing or because of your particular situation.

Validity of a   Spain tourist visa

The validity of a Spain tourist visa is three months within the half of a year. The validity is generally determined by the authority that issues the visa. Although you can obtain a visa that lasts for three months, it is possible that you may also obtain one that’s valid for up to three consecutive days.

Do Spanish citizens need a visa for India?

Yes, Spanish citizens need an Indian visa in advance to visit India. A tourist visa is necessary for Spanish citizens who wish to explore India's vibrant attractions and cultural heritage.

Indian visa for Spanish citizens: What are your options?

Spanish citizens can apply for various types of Indian visas based on their purpose of travel. Here are some common types of Indian visas available to Spanish citizens:

Tourist Visa : This visa is suitable for Spanish citizens planning to visit India for tourism, sightseeing, visiting friends or relatives, or participating in non-business activities.

Business Visa : If you intend to travel to India for business purposes, such as attending meetings, conferences, or exploring business opportunities, a business visa is required.

Medical Visa : Spanish citizens seeking medical treatment in India should apply for a medical visa. This visa allows entry for medical purposes and requires supporting documents from recognized medical institutions in India.

Conference Visa : If you are attending a conference, seminar, or workshop in India, a conference visa is necessary. This visa is specific to participating in such events.

Employment Visa : If you have secured employment in India, you need an employment visa. This visa is granted to those citizens to whom an Indian company or organization has offered a job.

Student Visa : Spanish students planning to study at educational institutions in India should apply for a student visa. This visa requires confirmation of enrollment from the respective academic institution.

It's important to carefully assess your purpose of travel and choose the appropriate visa category.

What is the India Tourist Visa for Spanish citizens?

The India Tourist Visa is a visa designed explicitly for Spanish citizens who wish to visit India for tourism, sightseeing, or visiting friends and relatives. It allows Spanish citizens to explore India's diverse cultural heritage, historical landmarks, and natural beauty.

The India Tourist Visa is typically granted for a specific duration, allowing Spanish travelers to stay in India for a designated time for their tourism-related activities. It's important to note that the India Tourist Visa is meant for non-business activities and does not permit engagement in any form of employment or paid work.

Suppose you are planning to visit India for business purposes, attending conferences, or other activities; a different visa category, such as a Business Visa , may be required in that case.

How long is the India Tourist Visa for Spanish citizens valid?

We offer three different Indian Tourist Visa options. Each has a different validity period. Your options include the following:

Double-entry visa valid for 30 days

Multiple-entry visa valid for 1 year

Multiple-entry visa valid for 5 years

The length of stay allowed per visa varies:

The double-entry e-Visa’s validity period is stamped on your Spanish Passport .

The 1-year and 5-year visas allow for 180 days Per Entry .

It's important to remember that the validity of the India Tourist Visa starts from the date it's issued, not from the date you arrive in India. You should apply for the visa well in advance to ensure you have enough time to complete the application process and receive the visa before your trip.

If you need to stay in India for more than 90 days, you can apply for an extension of your visa while in India. However, the extension is subject to approval by the Indian authorities and must be applied for before your current visa expires.

So, plan your trip accordingly and apply for your visa in time to make the most of your visit to India!
