Fabulous! I just returned from Bindlestiff's Grand Canyon & more 3 day tour. It was Fabulous! It provided a well-planned itinerary of fascinating places (Zion National Park, Horseshoe Bend, Antelope Canyon (optional & a must!), Monument Valley & the Grand Canyon. We were a perfect size group of twelve international travelers in a comfy van plus our delightful Tour Guide, Jade. We had enough time to immerse ourselves in each location and enjoy each experience. When on the road, Jade played upbeat themed music, weaved interested facts into a story and allowed quiet snooze time; plus the rest stops were well-spaced. On the first day we actually were in 3 states!!! Jade's yummy restaurant selections served the needs of each of the travelers' dietary requirements and the overnight accommodations were clean, comfortable & provided a nourishing breakfast. A special shout-out to Jade for her ability to ""herd cats"" while being attentive to each traveler's personal needs. She engaged with each of us in conversation and was delightful with a good sense of humor. A warm Thank You to Jade and Bindlestiff Tours!!!

Tour guide a great humanist able to reach out to all, domestic and foreign, to first form individual friendships that then led collectively to group bonding to experience nature's wonders. "Overall, the tour was very fun and we'll put together. The tour guides were all friendly, and seemed to work well as a team. Accomodations were not bad, but there were better options directly adjacent. Food options were pretty much all fast food, which makes sense for the tour concept. However, dinner options could have been a bit better. We really would have appreciated a little more hiking and exploring time, and a couple of the guides did the best to accommodate that. However, 20 minute stops are just not enough time to get "out and experience" the areas.

Grand Canyon

Vast, magnificent and inarguably beautiful, the Grand Canyon is easily Arizona's most distinguishable landmark — a natural wonder you must see to believe. Stretching 277 miles from end to end, the Grand Canyon's rocky walls descend more than a mile to the canyon’s floor, where the wild Colorado River continues to carve away at the rugged landscape. Everyone should see the Grand Canyon at least once in their lifetime, and area businesses and outfitters make experiencing the canyon accessible to everyone.

From the Rims

If you are short on time or prefer to take in fantastic panoramas from paved viewing points, simply visiting the Grand Canyon creates memories that stick with visitors forever. Grand Canyon National Park’s South Rim is the most popular visitor area, with plenty of places to eat, shop and stay the night in area hotels or campsites. The Grand Canyon Railway offers a fun family alternate for a short visit to the canyon. It operates turn-around trips from Williams to the South Rim year-round, with a three-hour window to see the canyon. Its annual Polar Express excursions are the stuff holiday traditions are made of. While less developed with fewer services and closed during the colder months, the North Rim is open from May to October and offers a unique and uncrowded way to explore the Grand Canyon. Grand Canyon West is also a favorite for short visits. Its Skywalk takes Grand Canyon visitors out over the rim on a glass bridge that hovers 4,000 feet above the canyon floor. Choose your vantage point and get ready to take pictures you will never delete.

From the Canyon Floor

If your group leans more toward the adventurous side, find many ways to fully immerse yourself in this natural wonder of the world. Trailheads at any of the entry points lead to steep switchbacks that take visitors into the canyon. Commit to a few hours to hike to plateaus fully encircled by the canyon walls. To hike to the Colorado River on the canyon floor, plan to camp overnight before hiking back up from the river to the rim. Many experienced hikers join seasoned outfitters on grueling rim-to-rim hikes or multi-day backpacking adventures to fully immerse themselves in the splendor of the canyon. Outfitters also offer Grand Canyon white-water river rafting adventures on the Colorado River, which can last from half a day to two weeks. Helicopter tours, mule rides and mountain bike rim trails offer other memorable ways to see the canyon in person. Survey the adventure level of your travel companions, and then use the following resources to plan the adventure of a lifetime in the Grand Canyon.

The majority of Grand Canyon visitors who are not from the Southwest fly into Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix, AZ. The most direct route from Phoenix to the Grand Canyon South Rim is about 230 miles. There are several Grand Canyon tour companies that leave from Phoenix or Scottsdale, though there are fewer options for this service directly from the Metro Phoenix area than if you were leaving from northern Arizona. If you are wanting to head north towards the Grand Canyon directly from the Phoenix airport, Groome Transportation offers transportation service to Sedona and Flagstaff every couple of hours. But most visitors post up in the Scottsdale and Phoenix area for a few days and enjoy what this resort city has to offer before heading towards the wilds of the Great Southwest. Visiting the Grand Canyon for a day trip is definitely doable, but it makes for a long day. With the drive taking just under four hours each way, your trip will be no less breath-taking, but likely abbreviated. Going on an air or helicopter tour once you get to the canyon is another great way to make the most of your time at this Natural Wonder of the World. If spending time at the Grand Canyon is important to you, consider staying a night in Sedona , Flagstaff , or Williams .

WALK THE GRAND CANYON’S SOUTH RIM

Walk to the South Rim From Yavapai Lodge

You can walk up the Greenway Trail directly from Yavapai Lodge to the Visitor Center, then pick up the Rim Trail. Another way to get to the Rim Trail is to use the trail that begins behind park headquarters. It brings you to a point on the rim that’s roughly halfway between Yavapai Point and Verkamp’s Visitor Center.

Take the Greenway path system to the Visitor Center, then pick up the Rim Trail.

SELF-GUIDED DESERT VIEW ACTIVITIES

Explore Desert View Watchtower

Designed by architect Mary Colter as an homage to the watchtowers built by the region’s ancestral Puebloan people, the Desert View Watchtower offers a commanding view of the Canyon. It also features murals painted by Hopi artist Fred Kabotie.

Tour Tusayan Museum and Ruins

Three miles west of Desert View, the Tusayan Museum provides a rare window into the lives and culture of the Pueblo Native Americans, who lived in the area more than 800 years ago. Browse exhibits that feature pottery, arrowheads and household items. Take a walk amid the juniper and pines through the Tusayan Ruins, to get a true sense of perspective on how the ancient Puebloans lived in harmony with nature.

NIGHT SKY TALKS

Join us for our FREE night sky events where you can view the Dark Sky through telescopes and ask our hosts questions about the stars. Each event includes a talk about the James Webb Space Telescope in the Yavapai Atrium, followed by a star-viewing party at the Market Plaza parking lot.

This is the southern edge of the Grand Canyon, open year round as opposed to the seasonal North Rim, with the most iconic views including the historic Grand Canyon Village.

The west rim is home to the Skywalk and the Hualapai Tribe. This area is not the Grand Canyon National Park. It offers amazing day tours convenient from Las Vegas.

Tusayan is a small town located at the South Rim entrance to the national park…home to the Squire Resort at The Grand Canyon, BW Signature Collection

Typically we are part of a larger southwestern itinerary. Phoenix and Las Vegas are the major airports leading to the canyon. The drive from either location is incredibly scenic …with Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon leading up from Phoenix and the Hoover Dam and Route 66 along the way from Vegas.

Driving distances are great in the Southwest. While the next closest cities to the canyon, Williams and Flagstaff, are only some 70 miles away, it can often take an additional hour or more to get through the park entrance. You’ll want to make the most of both sunrise and sunset by staying close.

At 7000 ft (2100 m) we do get winter. Additionally, the high desert always has at least a 30F degree (15C) difference between night and day. Always pack layers, especially a windbreaker. Sunset is amazing and with sunny days come starry nights! Be prepared!

The canyon is entirely within Arizona. However, Arizona does not practice Daylight Saving…so although we are listed as MST during the summer months we are at PST. All tribal nations within the state do practice Daylight Saving…so be sure to check the time when traveling throughout the region in the summer months.

We booked the sunset tour and our trip was fantastic. Alice was our guide and her love and knowledge of the area was apparent throughout the tour. We had a wonderful time. Was lucky enough to see an amazing sunset with a fantastic group of people. Learning about the history of the park was so much more than stopping at points and reading the signs available. We were so happy we went. As much as we liked our own ride and hikes through it really made our time here special.

My family and I decided to go on a tour to see different sites without driving ourselves. We selected this company by chance and we are so happy we did. The price was reasonable but more importantly was having such a good tour guide. We had Jerry & he was phenomenal. He was kind & very informative. He gave us facts about the Grand Canyon & also about the Navajo tribe since he is native America himself. He gave us information that I've wondered about. He taught us some Navajo words & about the culture. Jerry knew so much about the Canton history & dates that certain things happened, very impressive! I highly recommend this company to tour the Grand Canyon & recommend Jerry! We left the area feeling so informed and marveled. Great Job Jerry! You are certainly the "Dude".

Super fun experience with Jerry, our guide and driver :-)) Excellent door to door service. My family really appreciated all the shared wisdom, fun facts & expertise. He is a very safe driver. The vehicle has seat belts. They also provided a baby chair for my 3 year old. If needed, they had blankets for each person, which came in handy during the tour. Especially for the kids. Gerald Dawavendewa (Grand Canyon Conservancy Artist in Residence August 1 – September 14, 2024) grew up in the Hopi village of Munqapi and the Cherokee woods of Oklahoma. His interest in art led to a Bachelor's in Fine Art from the University of Arizona (U of A). Gerald has worked as an exhibit specialist with the Arizona State Museum and interned with the National Museum of American Indian, Smithsonian Institute. His internship led to a children's book, "The Butterfly Dance," in which Gerald is Author and Illustrator. Work includes a mural that is part of the permanent collection of the Arizona State Museum. In 1994, his artwork depicting the cosmos was sent aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour (STS-59). For the U of A's new Student Union, Gerald created panels containing native imagery forming the main staircase. Other work includes a six-foot-tall sculpture depicting a parrot that illuminates from within. Recent work is a book entitled: "Codex Taawa: Exploring the Cosmos of the Hopi."
