Paradise Island & Atlantis Shore Excursion
Experience the best of Nassau on this interesting and exciting tour of the island, highlighted by a visit to the world-famous Atlantis Resort.
Your Nassau excursion starts when you meet your guide/driver at the pier and get into your air-conditioned vehicle. One of your stops will be at the historic Fort Fincastle, a small fort shaped like a paddle-wheel steamer. The fort was built to protect Nassau from invaders; luckily it never saw warfare. At the fort, you'll have time to explore, climb the Queen Victoria Staircase, do some light shopping on your own, and take all the photos you want.
After marveling at Fincastle, travel along Bay Street, the heart of Nassau's shopping district, and home to the native Straw Market. Some highlights of this excursion include views of the Government House (official residence of the Governor-General of the Bahamas since 1801), the Governor's Mansion, and Gregory's Arch. This stone arch was named after Governor John Gregory, who served around 1850. When you pass through the arch on Market Street, you'll also cross the line that divides downtown Nassau from the rest of the country.
Following this, you will travel to Paradise Island, an island connected to New Providence by two bridges that cross Nassau Harbour. Hog Island Lighthouse, constructed in 1817, is located at the western tip of the island and can be seen from the cruise port.
The highlight of Paradise Island is without a doubt, the world-famous Atlantis, a magnificent resort with over 3,000 hotel rooms, 20 restaurants, a wide variety of stores, a 123-acre water park, beautiful beaches and the largest casino in the Bahamas. The total cost to construct Atlantis was over $2 billion. Your tour will make a short stop at Atlantis, where you'll have free time to explore the amazing lobby, casino, or the shops. After your free time, you will be taken back to your ship.
Guests wishing to end their tour at Atlantis will need to arrange a taxi back to the ship pier at their own expense. There are many taxis available at Atlantis and the approximate cost of the ride to the ship pier is $5 US/person. It is up to the guest to make sure they are back to their ship before sailing time.

Paradise Island
Paradise Island Bahamas houses some of the biggest and swankiest resorts in the country. However, like Nassau, it’s also home to interesting history, fun cultural sites, and more.
Most travelers are familiar with Paradise Island Bahamas, as it houses some of the most famous resorts in the country. From Paradise Island Atlantis to The Ocean Club, a Four Seasons Resort, accommodation options are bountiful. However, there are many other things to do in Paradise Island, even if you’re just in Nassau for the day.
Paradise Island Bahamas: The Resort Island of the Archipelago
Nassau paradise island: a history.
The Nassau area began its transformation into the tourist destination it is today in the mid-20th century.
During that time, property developers started buying up beachfront land and constructing resorts. This transformation caused Hog Island , as it was known in the past, to evolve into the Nassau Paradise Island of today.
As global travel became more popular, Nassau went from being a luxury destination for the rich to an accessible tropical paradise for the many. Paradise Island Bahamas became further developed, as a result.
Today, Paradise Island is home to many different accommodation options, including the famous Paradise Island Atlantis. Travelers arrive from across the world to enjoy the island’s upscale amenities and world-class beaches.
Things to Do in Paradise Island
1. paradise island atlantis.
Paradise Island Atlantis features several accommodation options like Royal Towers.
Paradise Island Atlantis is arguably the most famous of the Paradise Island resorts. Stretching across 154 acres, it has multiple accommodation options, dozens of amenities and attractions, and prime access to the beach.
If you’re looking for a place to stay in Nassau, Paradise Island Atlantis is always a great choice. Atlantis options like The Coral are more budget-friendly, whereas options like The Cove are for guests looking to splurge.
2. Aquaventure at Atlantis
Aquaventure Waterpark is one of the best things to do in Paradise Island.
Aquaventure is the Atlantis waterpark and is one of the highlights of Paradise Island Bahamas. It’s free to use if you stay at an Atlantis property. Otherwise, day pass rates (as of 2023*) are $250 for adults (ages 13 and older) and $125 for children (ages 4-12).
Aquaventure features water slides, pools, lazy rivers, and more, making it the perfect place to beat the heat.
3. Predator Lagoon at Atlantis
Predator Lagoon is one of several Paradise Island Atlantis aquariums.
Predator Lagoon houses different species of dangerous animals, including sharks, rays, and predatory fish. If possible, visit the lagoon at night to beat the crowds and enjoy an illuminated experience.
4. Cabbage Beach
Cabbage Beach may be the prettiest beach in the Nassau area.
While Nassau is home to many beaches, Cabbage Beach may be the most beautiful. With palm trees swaying in the wind, sprawling dunes, and uninterrupted views of azure, crystal-clear water, it’s hard not to be impressed when you visit.
Most travelers enter the beach in the Paradise Island Atlantis area and, because of that, are met with crowds of other tourists. A 15-minute walk down the beach is all it takes to rid yourself of most other travelers and enjoy a much more tranquil experience.
5. The Ocean Club, a Four Seasons Resort
The portion of Cabbage Beach in front of the Ocean Club is quiet and tranquil.
The Ocean Club, a Four Seasons Resort, is the most luxurious resort on Paradise Island Bahamas. Room rates can cost thousands of dollars per night, but if you can afford it, the resort will offer an unparalleled experience.
Staying at the resort also lets you enjoy access to the Ocean Club Golf Course. The range offers world-class golfing and scenic views.
6. French Cloisters and Versailles Garden
The French Cloisters and Versailles Garden are a stunning Nassau Paradise Island attraction.
The French Cloisters are the remains of a 13th-century French monastery. Brought from Europe and then reassembled on Paradise Island Bahamas, they, along with the verdant Versailles Gardens that surround them, create one of the most visually stunning places on the island.
7. Ocean Club Golf Course
The Ocean Club Golf Course is one of many Ocean Club amenities.
The Ocean Club Golf Course is a world-renowned golfing destination located in Nassau, Bahamas. Designed by renowned golf course architect Tom Weiskopf, this 18-hole par-72 course is nestled within the luxurious Ocean Club, a Four Seasons Resort on Paradise Island.
It boasts breathtaking views of the turquoise waters of the Atlantic Ocean and features lush fairways, challenging bunkers, and meticulously manicured greens. Golfers can enjoy a tropical paradise setting, complete with swaying palm trees and gentle ocean breezes. The Ocean Club Golf Course offers a premier golfing experience, combining natural beauty with challenging play, making it a must-visit for golf enthusiasts.
Getting Into Paradise Island Bahamas
Nassau and Paradise Island Bahamas are connected by a bridge. If you’re staying on Nassau, you’ll probably find taxiing over to the island to be the most straightforward way to get there.
That said, there’s also a Paradise Island ferry service that runs from New Providence to Nassau Paradise Island. Besides offering spectacular views of the islands and getting you where you need to go, the ferry lets you enjoy a narrated tour. Ticket prices (as of 2023*) are $5.
Taking a boat from Paradise Island to Nassau is easy from the Paradise Island Ferry Terminal. Allows visitors to enjoy a picturesque boat ride between Paradise Island and the Nassau Cruise Port.
Getting Around
Once you’re on Paradise Island Bahamas, getting around depends on where you want to go.
Some of the top Paradise Island attractions are at Atlantis, so you could purchase a day pass and stay there. However, you could also make your way to Cabbage Beach (for free) and then stop by the Atlantis Marina Village on your way back.
Some Paradise Island resorts like the Ocean Club may not allow you to enter their property unless you’re a guest.
Our Travel Guide Suggests…
While several resorts border Cabbage Beach, understand that all Nassau beaches are public. Because of that, you’re allowed to walk wherever you please. Umbrellas and chairs, however, may cost money to rent.
Paradise Island Attractions: Don’t Miss Out
Paradise Island Bahamas is most famous for its many resorts, like Paradise Island Atlantis. However, the island is worth visiting even if you’re in the Bahamas for an afternoon. With beautiful beaches and unique attractions, Paradise Island is home to some of the best Nassau attractions.
After touring the sites on Paradise Island, consider taking a trip to nearby Rose Island . Back on New Providence, you should also check out Potter’s Cay , under the Paradise Island bridge, and Fort Montagu , on the northeastern part of the island.
If you’re looking for all things Bahamas, you’ve come to the right place. Check out our other guides and interactive Paradise Island Map to start planning your dream Bahamas vacation.

Swimming With Pigs in the Bahamas
Getty Images
Reels of people frolicking with pigs on a beach in the Caribbean have more than likely surfaced on your TikTok and Instagram feeds at one point or another. After all, millions of people partake in this quintessential Bahamas experience each year, and the attraction is so popular that it's been replicated in other destinations.
If swimming with pigs in the Bahamas is on your bucket list, read on to discover the best tour options as well as what to consider when you visit.
Which Bahamas island has swimming pigs?
Located in the Exumas, Big Major Cay – commonly known as Pig Beach – is the original Bahamas island with swimming pigs. It is accessible from several islands in the Bahamas as well as Florida. Most swimming pig tours include other tourist attractions and experiences, including snorkeling in Thunderball Grotto (a filming location for two James Bond movies) and swimming with nurse sharks at Compass Cay.
How to get to Pig Beach from the Exumas
Staniel Cay: Staniel Cay is the closest inhabited island to Big Major Cay. Guests of Staniel Cay Yacht Club can take a short boat ride to Pig Beach via a local charter. 3N's Vacation Services and Staniel Cay Adventures are both reputable companies that offer such options.
Great Exuma: The largest island in the Exumas, Great Exuma houses some of the best resorts in the Bahamas , including the family-friendly Grand Isle Resort & Residences and the adults-only Sandals Emerald Bay . To get to Pig Beach from Great Exuma, it's best to book directly with your hotel. You'll have the option to take a full-day tour (with a roughly two-hour boat ride to the attractions from Great Exuma) or fly to Staniel Cay and take a short boat ride to Big Major Cay from there.
How to get to Pig Beach from Nassau
Pig Beach is reachable from Nassau via plane and/or boat. Below are some of the top-rated swimming pig tours from the Bahamas' capital city:
3N's Vacation Services: Swimming Pigs Flight & Tour

How to get to Pig Beach from Florida
There are a few reputable companies that offer Pig Beach tours from Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Below is a well-rated option:
Bahamas Air Tours: Miami to Bahamas Day Trip
Price: From $949 per person Duration: 12 hours
This full-day tour starts with private transportation from Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport. It also includes in-destination transportation to Pig Beach, Guana Cay, Thunderball Grotto, Compass Cay and the sandbars at Staniel Cay. Both alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages are included in the price as well. Recent travelers rave about this experience, with some noting it's the best tour they've ever taken.
Note that passports are required for this day trip, and that while children are permitted on the tour, it's not ideal for young kids. This excursion is also ill-suited for pregnant women, and the tour operator requires a doctor's clearance for expectant mothers. Tours are limited to nine guests (but require a minimum of five participants); private charters are also available.
Is Pig Beach ethical?
Even though the Bahamas limits the number of tour operators allowed to visit Pig Beach per day, there's some controversy surrounding the island and whether or not it's ethical to visit.
In 2017, several pigs were found dead after an influx of tourists left snacks on the beach, causing the pigs to ingest too much sand. Also, travelers can be aggressive with the pigs, often chasing them, picking them up or even trying to ride them.
In recent years, a number of safety measures have been put in place to protect both the pigs and tourists. Per the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, they include the following:
- A trough provides a designated feeding place for the pigs.
- Signage communicates rules to tourists, including what you can and cannot feed to the pigs. The pigs are restricted to a diet of fruits and vegetables, such as carrots, grapes, watermelon, apples and lettuce, and many guides supply these items for tourgoers. Some tour guides will provide bread as well, though processed food is not ideal for these animals.
- A local taskforce of caretakers is on the ground daily to ensure visitors and tour operators are engaging with the pigs responsibly.
While the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism maintains that the attraction is sustainable, know that there aren't any legal limitations protecting the pigs at this time.
How to be a responsible traveler at Pig Beach
All tour guides are expected to share the following protocols with travelers; whether they do or not, it is important to respect these rules for both the safety of the pigs and you:
- Remain calm at all times.
- Do not chase, pick up or ride the pigs.
- Do not engage with the pigs without supervision.
- Only use approved food from your tour operator, and do not feed the pigs alcohol.
- If you do not have feed, hold your hands up to show the pigs you do not have anything.
What to pack for your excursion
Pack a beach bag , dry bag or backpack with the following items:
- Reef-safe sunscreen
- Beach towel
- Camera and/or phone
- Waterproof phone pouch with lanyard
- Change of clothing
- Windbreaker or light jacket (in case of rain and because it gets chilly on the water)
- Cash and/or credit card (for tour guide tip and other purchases)
It's best to wear a swimsuit and a cover-up or T-shirt with sandals for the trip.
Frequently Asked Questions
There are several theories about the origin of the swimming pigs. The most logical is that when the Exumas gained popularity with the rich and famous in the 1980s and '90s, the resident pigs were too smelly to stay and were hence moved to the uninhabited island of Big Major Cay.
It is generally safe provided you're respectful of the animals. However, you should keep in mind that the pigs are known to bite if they're hungry and think you might have food you're not sharing. Because Big Major Cay is their home, they also defecate on the shoreline and in the water.
Most tour operators do not allow children under age 2 on these excursions, and based on our experience, we don't recommend bringing toddlers and young children in general — even if rates are free or discounted for them. Wait until your kids are a bit older.
Swimming with pigs on Big Major Cay – the original Pig Beach in the Bahamas – will cost you several hundred dollars – in part because Big Major Cay is a remote destination only accessible by boat. Of course, it is also pricey because of its popularity. Copycat experiences like swimming with the pigs on Rose Island are cheaper, but less authentic.

Are there swimming pigs on Rose Island?
There sure are! While the “original” famous swimming pigs reside on the island of Exuma, there are also pigs on Rose Island. The pigs that inhabit Rose Island are not wild pigs, they are pets, and are more gentle and predictable than those of Exuma.
Rose Island Sharks
Are there sharks around Rose Island? Yes, of course, there are. The waters around the Bahamas in general have a very high population of sharks. In fact, Bimini Bahamas is where the leading shark research in the world is headquartered, and where I was fortunate enough to swim with Caribbean Reef Sharks .
There have been two recent shark attacks near Rose Island. One attack was in 2019 and one in 2022 and both were fatal. While this may sound scary, shark attacks are very rare. Sharks do not seek out humans as a food source.
Rose Island Bahamas Snorkeling
Due to a coral reef offshore, and the incredibly clear Bahamian waters, there are excellent opportunities for snorkeling around Rose Island.

This Underrated Island In The Bahamas Has Pristine Beauty And Secluded Beaches
When you want to get away from it all, you might visit a quiet town or an underrated state park like Florida's paradise, Rainbow Springs . It's harder to do if you're looking for a tropical island to visit, because you're unlikely to be the only person to have that idea. However, there is an absolutely unspoiled gem of an island in the Bahamas that doesn't get many visitors. This island is called Mayaguana , which has fewer than 400 residents. It's pristine and very quiet... in fact, when you visit one of the stretches of sand along the coast, you might not see anyone at all. Once occupied by the Lycayans who were forcibly taken to Hispaniola by the Spanish in the 16th century, it was only used by pirates for a while. Later, in the early 19th century, it was repopulated by people from nearby Turks and Caicos.
Mayaguana, the least-visited island in the Bahamas, is a mere six miles at its widest point, and 24 miles long. There are only three villages (Abraham's Bay, Pirate's Well, and Betsy Bay), and one lovely resort called Baycaner Beach Resort at Pirate's Well, with rooms starting at $155 a night. You can snorkel or dive to your heart's content, see a little creature called Bahamian Hutia, which everyone thought was extinct until the 1960s, or just bathe in the relaxation. Here's all the info you need to visit Mayaguana and indulge in absolute peace and quiet.
Things to do by the sea in Mayaguana
The temperature can exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer, and the winter is warm as well, so water sports are the thing to do. You have to get in some snorkeling in this incredibly clear water, where you might spot starfish and sand dollars, as well as plenty of tropical fish. The calm water makes it great for kids and new swimmers, and you can rent snorkeling equipment from Baycaner Beach Resort for $150 a day. If you dive, your hotel or the resort can help with tanks and weights, but bring your own gear. The beaches have plenty of shade trees if you get too hot and need a break from the sea. You can also rent canoes for around $25 at the resort or set up a tour of the island. For something a bit more chill, just wander the beaches to find some lovely shells.
Mayaguana is also big for fly fishing. You can attempt to catch a bonefish, a permit, or a tarpon, and they'll give you a run for your money. The tarpon can get up to 200 pounds! Lure fishing can get you barracuda, jacks, and more, or you can even attempt spearfishing. Don't forget to bring your reef-safe sunscreen and remember these tips to snorkel safely around the reefs to preserve their beauty.
Getting to Mayaguana and what to do on land
A place this quiet isn't served by every airline. Bahamasair has three flights a week that take about 1.5 hours from Nassau. Alternately, if you're really not pressed for time, you can take the Lady Mathilda, which is the mailboat that brings in everything the island needs. It runs infrequently and takes two days, so maybe save that as an emergency option. Alternatively, you can come in on a private boat or private plane. Bring cash as there are no banks or ATMs on the island.
Take some time to explore the quiet villages and meet the locals. Your hotel can set up tours for you, or you can wander to see where pirates used to roam, water wells, and a former military base from the mid-20th century. You can try your hand at grabbing land crabs, or try them in soup or with rice or grits at one of the restaurants. Conch is also big on the island in fritter form or chowder.
There are some fascinating animals to spot on Mayaguana, like the Bahamian hutia we mentioned, which is a tiny mammal that kind of looks like a fuzzy rat/guinea pig hybrid. There are also nesting sea turtles on the eastern side, and some iguanas, and over 100 species of birds like the brown booby, the Bahama woodstar hummingbird (above), terns, the Bahama parrot, flamingoes, and osprey. It's the perfect place for a solitary tropical adventure.
