Culture and customs.

Zimbabwe is home to a diverse range of cultures, with the predominant group being the Shona (of which most Zimbabweans belong). The ancient Shona tribal culture is rich in mythology and symbolism. Dance, song and crafts are prevalent in most African cultures but even more so in Zimbabwe where traditional soapstone carving, weaving, painting and beadwork are important features of Shona culture and folklore. The arrival of European settlers changed the face of Zimbabwe, with English cultural influences evident throughout contemporary Zimbabwe. Christianity is practiced by the majority of Zimbabweans, but ancestral worship and traditional beliefs endure, with many locals practicing animist rituals in tandem with church-attending.

Other British influences are evident, with sports like cricket and rugby having a following and the British custom of tea drinking common throughout the country. Even though most Zimbabweans live in poverty and have endured many struggles, generally they still have a huge amount of kindness to bestow upon visitors. Travelers can expect to receive warm hospitality from most locals, who have a humble and somewhat inspiring approach to life.

Geography and environment

Zimbabwe is landlocked in southern Africa and bordered by   Zambia ,   Botswana ,   South Africa ,   Mozambique   and just meets the corner of   Namibia . Although without access to the coast, Zimbabwe has access to water through the presence of the Zambezi and Limpopo river systems. The topography is a mixture of mountains and plateaus, which are home to a wide range of flora and fauna. With grasslands and evergreen forests covering the land, Zimbabwe is home to a diverse variety of birds, mammals and plant species. With majestic mountains covered in emerald green forest, serene lakes and epic waterfalls, visitors will be treated to some of the most beautiful, unspoiled landscapes in the world while traveling through the countryside in Zimbabwe.

Best time to visit Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe is located in a tropical zone but due to its high altitude, the climate remains temperate and comfortable all year, making it a suitable destination to visit all year round. May to October is the dry winter season and if wildlife watching, these months are perfect for easy viewing because animals flock to watering holes seemingly just for you. November to April is wetter and hotter but brings about a stunning, lush landscape that serves as a brilliant backdrop to photos.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savouring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Travelers will be able to find a range of dining options in Zimbabwe, from international cuisine to local traditional fare.

Things to try in Zimbabwe

1. Nhedzi Soup

This wild mushroom soup is a national specialty and a good option for vegetarians in a country where game meat prevails in most restaurants and hotels.

This dried sardine-like fish is popular throughout Zimbabwe, where refrigeration isn’t available to all. Mainly sourced from Lake Kariba, visitors can order kapenta with a side of sadza (maize meal) in most restaurants.

3. Zambezi Beer

Zimbabwe’s national beer is locally brewed in Harare and widely available throughout most of the country. It's perfect for washing down lunch or dinner on a hot summer's day.

History and government

Early history.

The land of Zimbabwe has been occupied since the 9th century, with tribes first emerging in the Limpopo Valley before starting to occupy the highlands. Zimbabwe's early society developed into a series of kingdoms that traded commodities such as gold and copper with other nations. The Great Zimbabwe ruins are a remnant of this illustrious time in Zimbabwean history and can be visited while traveling in the Masvingo area.

Portuguese settlers arrived in the 16th century, having a devastating effect on the empire. Trade was halted and a series of wars rendered the empire near collapse at the dawn of the 17th century. The British arrived in the late 19th century, by way of Cecil Rhodes' British South Africa Company, which lobbied to colonize the area and control the land (and precious minerals within). By 1898 the area of Zimbabwe was known as Southern Rhodesia (with modern-day Zambia known as Northern Rhodesia). The Shona and Ndebele (along with other indigenous tribes) staged revolts against their colonizers, which were largely unsuccessful and lead to displacement, with land unfairly being allocated to European settlers, rather than local tribal people whose ancestors and families had lived there for centuries. In part, this issue of disproportionate allocation of land would return to haunt modern Zimbabwe many years later.

Recent history

Although controversial, colonial rule endured until Zimbabwe gained its independence in 1980, with Canaan Banana serving as the first President. In 1988, changes to the constitution enabled Robert Mugabe to become President. By the 1990s ethnic tensions, confrontation and political instability were changing the face of modern Zimbabwe. Zimbabweans had endured demonstrations, displacement, violence, drought, food shortages, and forcible land removal. The unstable economy, wildly fluctuating currency value and drop in tourism revenue translated into widespread poverty for many Zimbabweans. With the highest inflation rate in the world, Zimbabwe still suffers economic difficulties mainly due to the collapse of the once-strong agriculture sector. Despite this, Zimbabwe's people are irrepressible, the landscapes are as beautiful as ever and tourists have begun to return to experience the natural wonders and exotic wildlife of this great land.

While Zimbabwe lacks glitzy malls and heaving retail precincts, there are plenty of markets, galleries and workshops full of handicrafts and handmade wonders. It's also a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in Zimbabwe

1. Shona stone carvings

The Shona people have lived in Zimbabwe for thousands of years and have cultivated a rare talent in carving stone. Their craft is widely appreciated by the international art world, so support local artists by picking up a creative carving straight from the source.

2. Local music

Zimbabwean music is lively, moving and steeped in history. Featuring drumming, marimba, mbira, singing and chanting – pick up a CD and bring the spirit of Zimbabwe home to share with friends.

3. Batik fabric

Zimbabwe has an impressive array of batik, known as sadza cloth. Featuring wildlife and scenes of daily life, they make great bedspreads, wall hangings and tablecloths.

Top 10 wild animals of Zimbabwe

1. sable antelope.

Zimbabwe’s national animal can be found grazing in herds in the woodlands and savanna of Zimbabwe. Lean, graceful and powerful, the sable antelope is considered one of the most magnificent antelope in the animal kingdom.

Prides of regal lions strut through Zimbabwe’s parks and reserves. Head on safari to find them stalking prey, at play or lazing in the sun – lion-spotting is one of world’s most sought-after wildlife experiences for a reason, they are simply breathtaking to behold.

3. Hippopotamus

Hippos are a common sight while cruising on Lake Kariba. Watch them wallowing on the shores and lurking beneath the surface of the water. Although they look quite harmless, hippos are actually quite territorial and can get fierce, so don’t get too close.

4. African Wild Dog

Saved from the brink of extinction, the African wild dog is a recent conservation success story. While not completely out of the woods, population numbers have risen of late and if you’re lucky you’ll be able to encounter some of these highly intelligent canines while traveling in Zimbabwe.

5. Black Rhino

Sadly, black rhinos are on the critically endangered list due to poaching and loss of habitat. Zimbabwe still has pockets of these beautiful beasts and it’s possible to find them in reserves and protected areas.

6. White Rhino

Zimbabwe’s Matobo National Park is home to a significant population of rare white rhinos. Track them on foot with a local guide and be mesmerized at the sight of these enormous creatures quietly grazing in the protected valleys.

7. Crocodile

Keep your eyes peeled for these ancient reptiles that are experts at blending in with the scenery. Their menacing presence looms just under the water level – watch out for them while cruising Zimbabwe’s channels and rivers.

This timid animal scares easily, so you’ll have to remain quiet if you hope to get close to one. With unique corkscrew-like horns, they are easy to spot but harder to capture on camera as they are great at making swift departures.

9. Elephant

Large groups of the mighty African elephant can be found wandering the terrain of Zimbabwe's Hwange National Park. Imposing and inspiring, elephants are one of the most beloved animals in the world – see why for yourself in Zimbabwe.

10. African Fish Eagle

The national bird of Zimbabwe is swift, nimble and majestic. Abundant near bodies of water, witnessing an African fish eagle swoop on the water and capture its prey is an unforgettable travel moment.

Festivals and events in Zimbabwe

Held annually, this festival is jam-packed with exciting things to see and do, like watching energizing dance and music performances, browsing eclectic stands at craft markets and indulging in food and festivities at night.

Does my trip to Zimbabwe support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Zimbabwe directly support our foundation partner, Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust .

Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust

Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust works with local communities to promote wildlife conservation in Southern Africa. Communities living on the border of Victoria Falls National Park rely on subsistence farming of crops and livestock, usually producing no more than they need. When wildlife – the same creatures travelers would encounter on a safari – run into their land, it can have dire consequences for the animals, the crops and the people. Donations from our trips help employ a team of Community Guardians who collaborate with locals to find sustainable solutions to human-wildlife conflict and conservation.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Actually this program interpid gave only accomodation with breakfast at the hotel airport transfer and half day tour at US$1100+. for 2 persons. At this cost if we book the same hotel through Expidia will not cost more than US$300 for 2 persons If all included expenses as they charged should not be more than US$700 for 2 persons. The most of all we had extended to stay one more night and told the guide on the 1st day for our extension and asked for hotel to airport pick up . He said no problem just told the Horizon office ( local tour agent) at the hotel. We did told the Horizon , he said no problem just remind his colleague the day before we would go to the airport. But when we told again on the day before we would leave to the airport they said we have to pay for hotel to airport pickup at US$34 that was not the same as the guide and 1st Horizon employee told us (which we known after that they have bus run regularly) and keep the receipt for claim to Interpid after we back to our home. We decided to let the hotel call taxi for US$30 so we feel to be over charged too much for the poor service. VICctoria Falls us great! We just met the poor services..

Fantastic! Afro Honeyguide Adventures headed by Fungay and aided by Innocent had a perfect itinerary setup to see Hwange and Chobe National Parks along with Victoria Falls. All the guides were very informative, personable and accommodating. The lodging at all places was unique and enjoyable, especially the B&B in Kasane which I absolutely loved. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Tour reviews.

I purchased my rid tour as part of a group coupon. Is obituary hesitant but my tour was great. The staff at Encounters were professional and helpful. I had a lot of questions but no one made me feel like a pest. Good experience. I always wanted to go to Morocco and I finally got to go last September. I'm glad I chose this tour group. They were professional and attentive. Good times!

My experience with Encounters was excellent from start to finish. The Tour Guide, Sheriff, was the most passionate, enthusiastic and professional guide I have ever had on a tour and his love for Egypt really made me enjoy my time so much more.

There was a lot of communication from the beginning. The encounters staff was very responsive and the tour guide was great and very accommodating. Encounters was also able to help me with last minute changes to my itinerary while I was on the trip.

Encounters Travel did an excellent job in all aspects of our trip! Egypt was amazing and the trip was made especially enjoyable as a result of the quality of the guides. I highly recommend Encounters Travel! Worth every penny! Go to Egypt with Encounters Travel!

Encounters Travel did such a superb job in organizing this tour. I had never heard of them before going on the Maldives Magic tour, however now I will recommend them to friends/family and use them for my future planned trips. Our tour is what made the trip that much more memorable. Rather than being plopped at a westernized resort, we were able to get a taste of how the locals live, eat and entertain themselves. We stayed in quaint guesthouses on the islands amongst the locals, ate authentic Maldivian cuisine (one day even with a Maldivian family who made us breakfast), and viewed a traditional dance/singing performance which was absolutely delightful. This was a trip of a lifetime that I will never forget.

Zimbabwe Safari Guide

Where & when to go, and what to see on safari in zimbabwe.

Interested in a Zimbabwe safari? Read on below for the full low down…

Located between the mighty Zambezi and Limpopo rivers, landlocked Zimbabwe is one of Africa’s most pristine countries. The country borders Botswana , Mozambique, South Africa , and Zambia, and is best known for the magnificent spectacle of the Victoria Falls – a wonder of the world.

Having gone through decades of social unrest during the Mugabe era, Zimbabwe now openly welcomes tourists to the country.  Zimbabweans, as a rule, are friendly and warm people, the country sees fewer tourists than its neighbours, the game reserves are virtually untouched by mankind, and the guides are excellent. All this makes Zimbabwe a top – if under-attended -safari destination.

Alongside some of Africa’s best game viewing the country boasts its fair share of epic African scenery. The name Zimbabwe is derived from the incredible stone structures of the Great Zimbabwe ruins , a World Heritage Site, and the country has a further four World Heritage Sites, including Victoria Falls, the conservation area of Mana Pools and the spectacular granite Matobo Hills.

The central and western parts of the country are made up of mostly savannah grassland, with tropical evergreen forests in the eastern highlands and wonderful rock formations in the north. Whether you’re visiting for a safari or simply to take in the scenery, Zimbabwe offers a fantastic variety.

Self-drive safaris are an option in most national parks in Zimbabwe, though to enjoy full access to the most remote (and tourist-free!) areas you’ll need a 4WD car or jeep. If you fancy taking a tour or arranging your own guide and/or driver have a look at our list of safari tour companies in Zimbabwe before arrival in the country.

Experience the victoria falls.

victoria falls from the air

Forming the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, the 110 meter tall waterfall is one of the seven wonders of the world for good reason. Over 400,000 tourists visit Victoria Falls annually, to watch the Zambezi plummet over a cliff quite spectacularly.

Big five spotting

Zimbabwe Safari Guide 2

Go big five spotting at Hwange – Zimbabwe’s most famous national park. With raised viewing platforms of waterholes teeming with wildlife, Hwange is a park that almost always delivers for game. But seeing all the big five in one game drive? That will be a lot harder!

Take a Zambezi wildlife cruise

zambezi-river-cruise

Downstream from the Victoria Falls, the Zambezi – one of Africa’s mightiest rivers – flows through Zimbabwe’s Matusadona and Mana Pools national parks, home to hippos, rhinos and birdlife. There’s plenty of opportunities to hop on to a boat of some type to enjoy the wildlife whilst floating down the river.

Relax lakeside at Kariba

lake kariba sunrise reflections

Zimbabwe’s Lake Kariba is the world’s largest man-made lake, stretching 226 km, and forming part of the border between and Zambia and Zimbabwe. As with the all of Africa’s Great Lakes, Kariba offers spectacular views, stunning sunsets, great fishing, and is a wonderful spot to simply relax and reflect on your African adventure.

Best time to safari in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe is a year-round safari destination, though depending on where you go and what you plan to see (and how much rain and heat you can take), you may want to plan on visiting at a specific time of year.

Peak season to visit Zimbabwe is from May to October. At this time of year, Victoria Falls is in full flow and at its most impressive, while the wildlife viewing is excellent as animals concentrate around waterholes and rivers. With peak season comes crowds of tourists, though as the temperature rises to the 30s from July to October there are fewer visitors to contend with away from Victoria Falls.

The rainy season – made up predominantly of afternoon showers – begins in November or December, and lasts into March. Although some camps around Hwange close for the rainy season fthe park and many lodges remain open. This is a great time for a crowd-free safari with the added bonus of migratory birds. At this time lots of wildlife is born and the dry Zimbabwean bush becomes green and lush. Water levels in the Zambezi are low through the rainy season, making for better whitewater rafting on the Zambezi.

Zimbabwe Luxury Safari Tours

Zimbabwe offers a wonderful combination of plentiful wildlife, wild landscapes and a highly professional safari industry. The national parks and the animals they protect are world-class. One of the best things about going on safari in Zimbabwe is that it receives far fewer visitors than most of Africa’s other major safari countries. That means the parks are rarely crowded, and there are only a handful of accommodation options in each area. This lends most safaris here a real sense of exclusivity. Even Zimbabwe’s most popular parks, such as Hwange and Mana Pools, get only a small fraction of the visitors you might expect elsewhere. Even so, the landscapes and wildlife are every bit as memorable.

5 Questions About Zimbabwe Luxury Safaris

Anthony Ham

Answered by

Anthony ham.

tours of zimbabwe

Where should I go on a luxury safari in Zimbabwe?

“Zimbabwe has so much to offer that it’s more difficult to plan what to leave out from your trip than what to include. Hwange and Mana Pools National Parks are not to be missed. Then there’s the stunningly beautiful Victoria Falls, which ranks as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Hwange, Mana Pools and Victoria Falls also boast Zimbabwe’s widest selection of luxury accommodation, with some gorgeous safari lodges and tented camps to choose from in each destination. Most luxury safaris involve flying between the parks and the other in-country destinations, and this means you can accomplish more in a shorter space of time. If time allows, you should include Gonarezhou, Matusadona and/or Matobo National Parks on your itinerary. The ruined city of Great Zimbabwe, which is one of Africa’s most significant historical sites, is another definite highlight.”

How much will this safari cost?

“You can expect to pay anything from US$500 to more than US$1,000 per person per day on your luxury Zimbabwe trip. The cost does, of course, vary considerably between one operator and the next. Other variables include the number of days you’ll be traveling, the number of air transfers included in your itinerary, and the season of the year in which you’ll be traveling. The cost also depends on the accommodation. The per-person-per-day price could, for example, be much higher if you’re staying in one of the country’s premier safari camps, flying between national parks, having your own private vehicle for wildlife drives, and traveling in the high season. Whatever you’re paying, remember that this could be the safari of a lifetime, and it’s almost always worth every cent.”

What are the accommodation options?

“All of Zimbabwe’s parks and towns, as well as Victoria Falls, have excellent portfolios of high-end tented camps and luxury lodges. A recurring theme with all of these accommodation types is the spaciousness of the rooms and the high levels of comfort. Walk-in mosquito nets over the beds and en suite bathrooms are also standard. Camp and lodge staff are always attentive, and the attention to detail at these places is near faultless. The most common accommodation type is the tented camp, which usually consists of a handful of large, canvas safari tents, with luxury furnishings that evoke the classic safaris of yesteryear, and a small private terrace. There are also immaculate public spaces where you can dine and relax. Many of the camps are inside the parks and don’t have perimeter fences, which means that animals frequently wander through. In such places, apart from the thrill of being this close to the wildlife, you’ll need an escort as you move around outdoors after dark.”

Is Zimbabwe a good choice for a luxury safari?

“Zimbabwe is an excellent choice for a luxury safari. All the ingredients for the safari you’ve always dreamed of are present, from the exclusivity of the accommodation and the quieter safari trails to the wildlife you can see and the beauty of the landscape you can enjoy. Zimbabwe is one of Africa’s most underrated safari destinations, and its highly professional safari industry is a real plus; you can almost guarantee that you’ll be exceptionally well looked after while you’re here on your luxury tour. Another big reason to choose Zimbabwe is the country’s people. Zimbabwe has higher education levels and literacy rates than many other countries in the region, and the time you spend speaking with Zimbabweans will be one of the more rewarding highlights of your time here.”

What add-ons are available?

“There are many inclusions in a luxury Zimbabwe holiday, but that doesn’t mean you can’t add in a few memorable extras. Depending on where you are and which operator you’re traveling with, you might have the opportunity to visit local towns and villages or community projects. Such projects usually have some kind of conservation element and can be a fantastic way to deepen your understanding of the region. Other excursions and activities may be possible. You can also pay extra to have exclusive use of your own private guide and safari vehicle, while top-shelf drinks are usually considered extras. Many camps and lodges can also organize a bush breakfast, where you’ll be taken out to a scenic location and served a full-on breakfast by waiters; I’ve loved it every time I’ve done this.”
