Noosa Travel Guide: Best Things to Do in Noosa, Australia

Noosa is hands down my favourite place in Australia. If I had to pack my bags and move to one place tomorrow for the rest of my life, Noosa would be that place. Located on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland Australia, Noosa is one of the most charming and beautiful places to visit. So if you’re already planning to visit Noosa, you’re in for a treat. Here’s my Ncoosa travel guide, covering everything you need to know to plan your trip!

Best things to do in Noosa

Noosa, Sunshine Coast: Everything you need to know

How long to spend in noosa.

Located on Australia’s East Coast, Noosa is a wonderful destination for both a weekend getaway and a long trip, as well as an excellent stop point on an East Coast road trip .

I really love Noosa. So highly I recommend spending as long as possible here! But the good thing is, you can see the highlights of Noosa in just a weekend. It’s just the longer you can spend, the more you can soak it up and pretend you live here too!

Locals in Noosa, Queensland

How to get to Noosa?

If you’re flying in from another location in Australia, such as Melbourne or Sydney, you should be able to fly directly into the Sunshine Coast airport (also known as Maroochydore). This is only 35km (30 minutes) from Main Beach in Noosa.

Brisbane Airport is the nearest major airport for international flights, and is approximately 140km (1hrs50) from Noosa.

You can easily pick up a rental car at both airports to head to Noosa. Alternatively, you can use a transfer service such as this one from Brisbane .

If you’re arriving in Noosa by road, then the driving times are approximately:

  • Just under 2 hours from Brisbane
  • 3hrs from the Gold Coast
  • 3hrs30 from Byron Bay
  • 13.5 hrs from Sydney
  • 18hrs from Cairns
  • 26.5 hrs from Melbourne

Note, there is no train station in Noosa. The nearest station is 15 miles away but it’s train services are not very convenient.

Noosa travel guide

When is the best time of year to go to Noosa?

Noosa is blessed with tropical weather nearly all year, making it the perfect beach destination.

The hottest time of year is from December to February, but with this comes very high humidity and increased rainfall, particularly in the afternoons.

During the winter months of July and August, the temperature does drop slightly but is still comfortable and makes for delightful beach weather.

However, it is widely considered that spring and autumn, from April to June and September to November are the very best times to go to Noosa. Visitors can expect long, sunny, dry days – the perfect weather for exploring the national parks and beaches.

If you visit in May, then your trip may coincide with the Noosa Food and Wine Festival with more than 80 chefs and sommeliers joining from across the world. And if you visit in September and October, you may spot whales from the coastline as they migrate north.

If you’re visiting other areas in Australia, then make sure to check out my detailed climate guide here .

Where to stay in Noosa?

There are some seriously beautiful places to stay in Noosa, especially near the coast. Although Noosa is a fairly upscale town, it’s easy to find accommodation in Noosa covering all budgets and preferences.

Best luxury hotels:  There are some amazing luxury hotels in Noosa. Some of best would include  Noosa Shores  (£350 per night), the popular  Sofitel Pacific Resort  (from £158 per night) and the boutique Netanya  (£211 per night)

However, there’s also the more affordable and  Tingirana (£103) and Peppers Resort  located directly on the beach (from £92 per night)

Where to stay in Noosa

Good value stays:  My favourite place to stay in Noosa is  10 Hastings Street Boutique Motel . The rooms are simple but have a relaxed beach theme, with small balconies and a parking spot too. This small hotel is best known however for its restaurant downstairs, which is by far one of the best places to eat in Noosa! Rates start from about £60 per night.

Best hostels:  Nomads Backpackers  is the best spot for backpackers and travellers in town, and it has some really impressive facilities. Dorm rooms start at £37, or a double is £44. Another option is camping at the Noosa North Shore Campground if you fancy sleeping in the heart of nature.

It’s worth noting that you cannot stay in the popular Noosa National Park, not even camp. It is very much only open for day visits.

Where to eat in Noosa

Where to eat in Noosa

There are some amazing places to eat in Noosa, covering delicious açai bowls, smoothie bowls, Mexican food, Spanish food, delicious burgers and local Aussie delicacies such as grilled barramundi and kangaroo fillets.

Here are some of my favourite foodie spots:

  • 10 Hastings Street Boutique Motel + Cafe (the evening Spanish set menu and live music is a must )
  • Taco Boy for Mexican cuisine
  • Betty’s Burgers for the best burgers and concrete milkshakes around
  • Noosa Surf Lifesaving Club for hearty portions of seafood and a beer (or three)
  • Raw Energy for smoothies and brunch

Getting Around Noosa

Exploring all the best attractions in Noosa can easily be done on foot, if you’re staying centrally near Hastings Street. Otherwise, I recommend hiring a car in order to get around easily and to also explore more attractions on the Sunshine Coast.

We found parking in Noosa could be a little tricky, but normally a space would become available after a few rounds of the car park.

There is a public bus system in Noosa which is fairly comprehensive, and tends to cover most of the main beaches and attractions. You can find out more here .

Alternatively, there are plenty of well-priced tours and excursions covering all the main attractions and places to visit from Noosa. Here’s my guide:

Noosa Main Beach

Best things to do in Noosa

Visit the noosa heads national park.

This is the first thing any travel guide suggests as the best thing to do in Noosa, and for good reason. This stunning national park is so accessible, with phenomenal scenery, free entry and countless things to do and see. The park is beautifully maintained, with easy walking tracks and the chance to spot koalas in the eucalyptus trees above.

Spotting koalas in Noosa Heads National Park

You can walk to the entrance from Noosa Main Beach along a wooden boardwalk besides the ocean, meaning you don’t even need to use transport or a car to get there.

If you do drive, there is parking at the entrance which is free – but fills up quickly. If you’re planning to spend the day, then I recommend going early. You will also find clean toilets, a small shop and picnic tables.

My favourite beaches in Noosa are Little Cove Beach (alongside the boardwalk), Tea Tree Bay (approx 20 minute walk from the entrance) and also Alexandra Beach (approx 45 min walk from the entrance).

Exploring Noosa National Park

There are 5 main walking tracks to consider. The Coastal Track is the most popular and is 10.8km return. It takes in all the beautiful beaches along the coast, before finishing at Hell’s Gate. The first portion of this track is paved so accessible, and later on the route, it becomes more uneven and rocky.

The other tracks are:

Palm Grove Circuit: 1.1km circuit through the rainforest. Approx 15-30 minutes

Noosa Hill Track: 2.8km return through the woodlands. Approx 1-1.5 hours

Tanglewood Track: 8km route through the rainforest and woodlands, finishing at Hell’s Gate so combines well with a return along the Coastal Track

Alexandria Bay: 4.2km return to the furthest point within the national park, taking up to 1.5-2 hours

Noosa National Park

Explore Hastings Street

This is the main street in Noosa, which runs parallel to Main Beach. It is charming, with fairy lights strung between the trees that dazzle in the evening. There’s something about Noosa that feels so different to other beach towns in Australia. It has such a pleasant, atmospheric feel and the most relaxed, welcoming vibe.

The restaurants lining both sides of Hasting Streets spill into the pavement in the afternoon and evening for al fresco drinks and dinner. The tables often face outwards like in Paris, so you can watch the world go by over a delicious cocktail or wine.

There’s also some excellent shopping, from quaint boutique stores, surf shops or high end clothes stores. You’ll see everyone shopping alongside you, from backpackers to honeymooning couples.

Visit the Farmers Markets

Australia loves farmers markets, and Noosa is no exception.

Noosa hosts a Sunday market from 7am to 12pm, with locals selling organic produce such as raw honey, kombucha and delicious homemade preservatives. This is a market more focused on food, but in nearby Eumundi, there is another popular Farmer’s Market, running Wednesday to Saturday until 1pm or so. The market in Eumundi sells a variety of gifts, arts and crafts and delicious street food across more than 600 stalls.

Get surfing

Noosa is famed for its watersports and surf lifestyle. Whether you’re a regular surfer, or keen to learn, you won’t be disappointed with the waves in Noosa.

The lessons take place in the shallow, calm waters of Noosa Main Beach and are all with qualified local surfers. Book your surf lesson online in advance here.

Local surfing dogs in Noosa

Visit Land & Sea Brewery

Noosa’s first brewery, Land & Sea , opened in March 2019, and is located in an awesome industrial style venue, complete with a restaurant and bar. There’s also a free shuttle bus to take you back to Noosa, so no worries and getting home after a few beers!

Adjacent is also Noosa’s first gin distillery called Fortune , so this can definitely a full day activity if you fancy!

Or why not join a half-day craft brewery tour , visiting this brewery plus three others.

Noosa on the Sunshine Coast

Explore Noosa’s beaches

The Sunshine Coast in Australia is renowned for its world class beaches, and Noosa’s are postcard-perfect. The sand is perfectly white, and the water clear and turquoise. Some of the beaches are best for surfing, such as Noosa Main Beach or some of those in the national park such Alexandria Bay. Some are dog-friendly such as Noosa Dog Beach and some are perfect for swimming, particularly those at Noosa Spit where the water is protected, so it is extra calm and shallow.

I personally love Tea Tree Bay and Little Cove Beach in Noosa. Both are lined with palm trees and offer calm, transparent water for swimming.

Hire a boat and explore the Noosa River

The beautiful, sparkling Noosa River winds its way around the tiny inland islands, mostly home to stunning houses and rentals, before meeting the Coral Sea near to Noosa Main Beach. A day spent on a small boat around the canals of the Noosa River is magical. You can anchor the boat wherever you please and jump in for a swim, or maybe even find your own secluded beach. Most of the boats have cooler boxes (called eskies in Australia) as well as BBQ facilities, so come prepared and you can spend the full day on the water.

You don’t need a license to hire a boat , called a BBQ pontoon boat as they are simple to drive and manage. Prices cost approximate AUD$90 for the first hour, then AUD$45 after that. They can take up to 12 people and have all the equipment and tools needed for a BBQ, as well as SUP boards and fishing equipment.

There’s also a smaller variety of boat called a polycraft which takes 5 people, with rates starting at AUD$60 for the first hour, and AUD$30 after that.

Hiring a boat on the Noosa River

Kayak around the Noosa Everglades

Not only does Noosa have an amazing national park, world class beaches and a beautiful river, but it is also one of two places in the world with an Everglades system. The other is in Florida near Miami .

The Noosa Everglades are considered one of the region’s ‘best kept secrets’, and are a hidden oasis, where you can float along in admiring the nature and appreciating the gentle sounds of the surrounding forest. You must first cross Lake Cootharaba which is a little more strenuous, but then you can float and bob along the narrow waterways. Here you can spot up to 700 animals native to Australia and hundreds of bird species too. There are also 1,365 species of plants in this area.

Arrange your Everglades kayaking adventure here.

Kayaking in Noosa

Enjoy a dolphin-watching safari

Go on a  dolphin-watching safari by kayak , where your chances of seeing dolphins are super high. Departing from the harbour in Noosa Ville, you head out by speedjet so make sure to hold on!

Not only can you spot dolphins, but you may also see sea turtles and other marine life. It’s also a magical way to take in the views and landscape of Noosa National Park from the water.

Dolphins in Noosa

Best things to do near Noosa and surrounds

Visit fraser island.

Famous for being the world’s largest sand island, this amazing natural wonder is just 2 hours’ drive from Noosa. You can visit as a day trip, but if you can spare the time, it’s incredible to spend a few days exploring and camping at night.

Tours leave daily from Noosa to Fraser Island and this is an absolute must do on the East Coast. Highlights include 4×4 safaris on the off-road tracks, beach driving, swimming in sparkling lakes, tubing on the Eli Creek and bonfires in the evening, if you stay overnight.

Organise your Fraser Island adventure here!

Exploring Fraser Island on a full day tour

Rainbow Beach

Often considered as the gateway to Fraser Island (along with nearby Hervey Bay), this is a lovely area to visit – especially for its epic sand dunes. It’s great fun to climb over the dunes and appreciate the stunning views along the coastline, but you can also arrange an exhilarating horse riding along the beach.

To add to the adventure, if you have a 4WD, you can drive along the Great Beach Drive (part of the Great Sandy National Park) from Rainbow Beach back to Noosa. This 280km stretch of bright white sand is easily one of the most beautiful drives in Australia. If you don’t have a 4WD, then you can join a tour such as this one .

Exploring the Carlo Sand Blow

Go hiking in the hinterland

Away from the beach, Noosa is located a short drive from the beautiful hinterland where there are scenic hiking routes as part of the Noosa Trail Network. One excellent hike is the nearby Mount Tinbeerwah, and another is a little further out in the Glasshouse Mountains.

It can definitely be easier to visit the hinterland on a tour such as this one, which takes you to the mountains, along rainforest routes and to lesser known waterfall spots.

Skydive over the beautiful Sunshine Coast

An absolute must for thrill-seekers! Jumping from a 15,000ft plane offers views like no other across the spectacular Sunshine Coast!

Book your Noosa tandem skydive in advance here!

Skydiving in Australia

Meet Australia’s unique wildlife at Australia Zoo

Just 1 hour away from Noosa is one of the East Coast’s most iconic attractions, the Australia Zoo. Made famous by of course, the beloved Steve Irwin, the zoo is an incredible day out with countless opportunities to get up close and personal with some of the native creatures of Australia.

Included with this awesome tour is a koala cuddle and photo, entry to the zoo and the wildlife hospital, as well as return transfers, making it a hassle free outing!

  • Getting to Noosa
  • When to visit

Friendly locals, slow beach days and unique adventure activities make Noosa one of Australia’s most popular beachside destinations.

Noosa is surrounded by stunning beaches, lakes, and the lush hinterland of Noosa National Park. It's also home to one of only two everglades systems in the world. If you are looking for adventure, it's at your feet. And if you want to unwind, indulge and take things at a leisurely pace, you'll find plenty of opportunity to spoil yourself here.

Getting to Noosa is easy, with flights arriving at Sunshine Coast Airport and nearby Brisbane airport.

  • Sunshine Coast Airport (MCY) is 33km (21mi) from Noosa and services domestic arrivals
  • Brisbane Airport (BNE) is 137km (85mi) from Noosa and services domestic and international flights
  • Hire cars, ride shares and shuttle services are available from both airports. With limited public transport options in town, the easiest way to get around is by car

Being so close to Brisbane, Noosa is a popular holiday and weekend destination throughout the year. The town can be busy over the Australian school holidays , especially the long summer break (mid-December to the end of January), and Easter. Winters on this stretch of coast are mild, and you can comfortably swim at Noosa's beaches all year round.

  • High season: Summer (December to February)
  • Low season: Late autumn to early spring (April to September)
  • Don’t miss: Noosa’s packed calendar of festivals and sporting events

For the thrill seekers, there are also ocean tours you can go on which go out to the Noosa Bar. Jump the waves, and see all of Noosa’s famous points on a fast-paced guided tour.

If jet skis aren’t your thing, there are plenty of other options to explore Noosa’s waterways. Enjoy a private cruise on a gondola, cruise the water as the sun sets, jump onto a solar-powered canoe, go whale watching (from late July to end of October), or even explore Noosa’s everglades as you cruise through the lakes and wetlands.

Local Markets

Food, crafts, homewares or clothes, there are an abundance of markets in Noosa and the surrounds to keep you busy (and your wallets working overtime). You can’t go past Eumundi Markets, a colourful food and art market held twice a week, rain, hail or shine. It’s known as Australia’s premier artisan market and is filled with locally made treasures. And the street food is delectable. As an added bonus, scattered throughout the stalls are buskers and street performers to keep you entertained as you shop. It’s an easy 20-minute drive from Noosa and there are buses that go directly to the markets. Be prepared though, the markets get exceptionally busy.

The Noosa Farmers Market is a hive of activity every Sunday, nestled among the gum trees in Noosaville. The Market is packed with locally-produced seasonal produce including everything from nuts and seeds to marinades and sauces. There’s also skin care products, seafood that has literally just been caught and freshly baked breads. Indulge your senses and take a wander, as you snack on the delicious food and incredible coffee.

Jump on a ferry from Hastings St along the Noosa River and be delivered right to the entrance of the Noosa Marina Markets. Stop for a bite to eat at one of the restaurants that line the marina before wandering through the market stalls. There are locally-made crafts along with fresh produce, and music and entertainment fill the air. It’s truly a lovely way to spend a Sunday.

National Park and Botanic Gardens

While many people associate Noosa with the sand and sea, the seaside resort town is actually surrounded by lush greenery and bushland. The Noosa Hinterland is perfect for nature lovers and has some excellent walks to enjoy, even for the least green among us.

The Botanic Gardens are a short drive from Cooroy on the shores of Lake Macdonald. There are more than eight hectares of native and international plant species to discover and there’s an abundance of wildlife that call the gardens home. There’s also a lily pond, picnic areas and playgrounds for the kids. For those looking for exceptional walks around Noosa, look no further than the Great Noosa Trail. There are eight connected trails that pass through the national park and parklands through the Hinterland. There are short hour-long strolls through to a few hours trails. Along the trails, there are fantastic lookouts to admire the scenery as you go, including a spectacular view of the mountains.

Speaking of spectacular views, head to the top of Mt Tinbeerwah. You can drive almost to the top so don’t worry about exhausting your legs too much, and the walk itself is only about 300m long. The viewing platform at the top provides 360 degree views from the north of the Sunshine Coast. For the stargazers, head up around midnight. The mountain is out of range of the suburban lights so the starry sky shines bright as can be.

The resort is set over three acres of tropical gardens and offers plenty of water sports, a beautiful pool, tennis courts and even bike riding.

Despite being in Australia, you’ll feel like you’re in the South Pacific. The central location is within easy access to Noosa’s beaches, Noosa River, the national park and Hastings St.

For those who want to be in walking distance to the beach, look no further than the resorts, apartments and hotels lining Hastings Street.

For a little bit of added luxury, there’s an in-house cellar and even gourmet groceries and hampers delivered to your door at your request. There’s a relaxing day spa on site too so you can have your troubles massaged away any day of the week. While not on the beachfront, the Sebel is a terrific option for families of all sizes. It’s just across the road from the beach and it’s situated above the famous Aroma Café, where many flock to people-watch as they sip on a coffee or a cocktail. There’s an excellent pool and apartment options for those who need a little bit of extra space.

The Sofitel Noosa Pacific Resort has direct access to the river on one side direct access to Hastings Street on the other, right in the heart of everything. You’re just steps away from the beach and the luxurious resort truly has everything, including a day spa and numerous restaurants on site.

Camping and Caravans

For those who want to stay close to nature, Noosa has numerous options.

Pitch Luxury Camping offers bespoke glamping tents that can be set up on any of the private or public camping grounds in the Noosa region. The tents include queen size beds, bespoke furnishings and anything else you may need. Situated on the banks of the Noosa River, the Noosa River Holiday Park is one of the most popular holiday parks on the Queensland Coast, probably due to its gorgeous setting. Ideal for caravans, campers, RVs and tents, there are options for slabbed and non-slabbed sites plus a selection of waterfront options.

Top ways to visit Noosa

What’s fantastic about Noosa is that if you have a car, there is a lot to explore. Noosa is not just Hastings Street, although this is the area Noosa is most famous for. If you don’t have access to a car, there are many ways to get around. And if you’re keen to just stay on the main strip, there’s absolutely no need for any mode of transport, as everything is at your fingertips.

Four-Wheel Drive Adventures

For those looking for a bit of an adventure, however, hop on board a four-wheel drive and discover the sand dunes. The area is only accessible by 4×4 and it’s absolutely incredible to drive along the white sandy beaches. The scenery constantly changes as you move along the sand and there are various stops you can make along the way. The views from Double Island Point Lighthouse are simply breathtaking, the colour sands at Rainbow Beach are fascinating and the secluded lagoon at Honeymoon Bay is a must-see.

Whether it’s sand, surf, river or bush you’re after, Noosa has it all. For the thrill-seekers there are ample adventures and for those who simply want to relax, the sand, the sea and the restaurants are calling your name.

Noosa is the Sunshine Coast's golden child. One of Australia's most fashionable resort towns, it's lush, low-rise centre backs onto pristine subtropical rainforest and relatively calm, crystalline waters. The result is intimate, relaxed and exclusive. The town itself is within the Noosa Biosphere Reserve, a Unesco-recognised area famous for its highly diverse ecosystem.

Ultimate Noosa travel guide

Noosa has a star quality all its own and just like a Hollywood A-lister, this stunning beachside town shows off those natural good looks to full advantage. Chic couples stroll hand-in-hand along Noosa’s pristine beaches, stylish restaurants beckon and local markets and boutiques hold the promise of the perfect holiday memento. There are plenty of things to do in Noosa and fabulous places to stay, whether you want to splurge on a romantic Noosa honeymoon hotel overlooking the beach or stay somewhere more affordable in Noosaville. Whatever time of year you’re planning to visit, Noosa offers the perfect excuse to slip off your shoes and spend time with your family or enjoy a sophisticated and romantic stay with someone special. Here is our ultimate guide to where to stay, dine, and drink, and the best Noosa things to do with links to detailed reviews.

Noosa weather

It doesn’t matter when you decide to visit Noosa as this destination offers plenty to see and do throughout the year. For many visitors, particularly for those who want to stay at one of the high end resorts along Hastings Street, the decision often comes down to cost. Spring runs from September to November and offers sunny, dry days with a low chance of rain. The weather starts to heat up around this time, although September can still be too chilly for swimming,  particularly in the early part of the month or if it is windy. With clear skies and temperatures around 24 degrees, spring is the perfect time for enjoying the National Parks and walks on the beach. It is also ideal for sampling Noosa’s many outdoor cafes, bars and restaurants.

Couple in Noosa National Park

Summer is hotter with temperatures peaking in the early part of the year. This is the best time for swimming and soaking up the sun, provided there are no cyclones further north as this means it will likely be windy and rainy. Summer is peak season in Noosa which means high prices and crowds, although Noosa tends to feel buzzy rather than crowded, even when it’s busy. Expect a lot of families around this time and eye watering prices if you want to stay on Hastings Street. Now is not the time to enjoy a Noosa honeymoon . Autumn is similar to spring and usually warm throughout and suitable for swimming, although things are often getting chilly by May and there can be some rain. If you aren’t keen on swimming and want to avoid the rain, winter is generally dry with cloud-free days and crisp evenings.

A perfect Spring day at Noosa

Winter offers bargain prices, no crowds and plenty of specials when it comes to accommodation. If you stay mid week, it’s possible to find excellent accommodation deals in winter and enjoy a relaxing break with a focus on pampering, wining and dining for a bargain price.

Noosa Main Beach

Where to stay at Noosa

One important thing to know before you start looking at accommodation is Noosa Heads and Noosa Junction are completely different spots. Noosa Heads is the area in and around Hastings Street. Noosa Junction is a shopping area around 25 minutes’ walk away and nowhere near the beach. There are four main areas to stay at in Noosa: Along Main Beach, near near Hastings Street, Noosa Junction and Noosaville and its surrounds. The most highly coveted (and the most expensive) option is along Hastings Street at one of the resorts overlooking the Noosa boardwalk and Main Beach.

I Love Noosa

These hotels have some of Noosa’s best beach views and offer a classic barefoot beachside Noosa experience for those who can afford it. However, if you want that picture postcard worthy beach view, you’re going to have to pay for it. Hastings Street hotels and resorts are located right on or near the beach and within walking distance of everything, including Noosa National Park. If you stay on Hastings Street, you’ll also have some of Noosa’s most popular shops, bars and restaurants right on your doorstep.

They’re also some of the most expensive accommodation options in Noosa, with ocean view rooms starting at around $600 per night mid-week in low season. Both Seahaven Noosa and On the Beach offer beautiful ocean views and good value as you can self cater. Accommodation options close enough to Hastings Street that you can walk there in under 15 minutes are ideal for those who want to be in the heart of the action but can’t afford the resorts along the boardwalk at Noosa’s Main Beach. Our favourite option in this category is Peppers Noosa Resort & Villas which adjoins Noosa National Park. This resort offers self-catering apartments in leafy surrounds with a soundtrack provided by native birds at a fraction of the cost of a Hastings Street resort. The Sofitel Noosa Pacific Resort has a prime location on Hastings Street and all the ingredients for a stylish beach holiday. With its Mediterranean-meets-France styling, it’s a landmark destination for travellers after an extra dash of style with some of the best service in town – and beyond.

Peppers Noosa Resort

Noosaville is around 10 minutes’ drive from Noosa and overlooks the river. It has plenty of great dining options and a grassy foreshore that is ideal for picnics. However, you’ll need to drive to a beach if you are staying here. Our favourite alternate accommodation option is Eumarella Shores Noosa Lake Retreat on beautiful Lake Weyba. Surrounded by native bushland with regular visits by wallabies and native birds, this is a peaceful escape just 15 minutes drive from Hastings Street.

travel shop noosa

RACV Noosa Resort is set amongst native Australian bushland with superb mountain views and is a 10 minute walk from the great bars and restaurants at Noosa Junction. If you would like to explore the up and coming dining precinct known as The Junction at Noosa Junction, it’s in the perfect spot and has some of the largest apartments in Noosa. There’s a courtesy bus if you want to head to Hastings Street or you can walk as it only takes 25 minutes walk. This picturesque resort is my top choice at Noosa for those travelling with children.

RACV Noosa Resort

Things to do at Noosa

Noosa’s natural beauty inspires visitors to relax and revel in its sense of place. In fact, it’s one of the best spots in Queensland to enjoy a healthy holiday. Soak up the sun on a secluded beach or walk the famous Noosa National Park Coastal Track or get back to nature on a tour.

Noosa National Park

The combination of incredible scenery and lively and interesting commentary make a Noosa helicopter tour a must-do on a trip to the Sunshine Coast. You’ll be talking about the amazing views and posting on social media for days.

Perfect flying condition near Lake Weyba

Noosa Oceanrider offers dolphin watching off Noosa’s pristine coast. If it is whale season, you will probably see these magnificent creates as well. Thrill rides are also available if you fancy something a little more racy along with your wildlife spotting.

Noosa Oceanrider

There are plenty of things to do at Noosa for active travellers . Plunge into the crystal clear waters of Little Cove or Laguna Bay or join the locals swimming laps up and down Main Beach. Waves are gentle at Noosa which makes this beach a hit with families.

Noosa Beach family

Stand up paddleboarding and surfing off the point is also popular. If you would like to try surfing for yourself, sign up for a lesson with Noosa Learn to Surf or hire a board from the stand in front of the surf club.

Noosa yoga

If you want to work off some of Noosa’s excellent dining, grab a paddle and explore the Noosa Biosphere Reserve, a spectacular series of freshwater tidal parklands covering 150,000 hectares, on a Kanu Kapers Everglades Tour .

Kanu Kapers

If you don’t want to do the paddling yourself, Noosa Dreamboats takes visitors through the pristine Noosa Everglades in a vintage wooden speedboat. This cruise provides a whole new perspective on Noosa’s natural beauty.

Noosa Dreamboats

If you have access to a car, take a culinary day trip to the nearby Sunshine Coast hinterland and sample light-as-a-feather scones at Montville or visit a boutique cheese factory or family-run vineyard at Maleny. Or you could head to the Pomona Distilling Company in Pomona, a laid back village about 30 minute’s drive from Noosa.

Pomona Distilling Co.

Best Noosa food and wine

There is never a dull moment when you dine at Noosa. You’ll probably see more locals at the restaurants at Noosaville but there are some great dining options with fabulous views along Hastings Street. Bistro C , Season Restaurant and Sails Restaurant all have a stunning outlook over sparkling blue sea and are the perfect spot to linger over a meal. In summer, you can enjoy a drink and watch the sunset before dinner at these restaurants.

travel shop noosa

Miss Moneypenny’s is a funky restaurant and bar where chill-out tunes and a hip clientele create an exciting vibe. Bistro C serves fabulous cocktails and is the ideal spot to watch suntanned beach goers drifting to and from their accommodation. Aromas offers superb people watching on Hastings Street. This café’s row of wicker chairs face outwards in classic European fashion and everyone goes there to be seen, even if they’d rather die than admit it. The coffee is as good as the people watching. Betty’s Burgers also has great people watching and some of Noosa’s best burgers. For something quick to takeaway and eat on the beach, the food court at Bay Village on Hastings has outlets selling freshly squeezed juices, sandwiches, sushi, pies, wraps, and kebabs.

Betty's Burgers

Foodies should consider joining the locals and venturing further afield to the likes of Noosa Waterfront Restaurant & Bar , a long-standing local favourite that is less than 10 minutes’ drive from Hastings Street. ALBA by Kuruvita is also 10 minutes’ drive from Hastings Street and dishes up stellar Sri Lankan fare made with the Sunshine Coast’s famous produce. The bar here is staffed by friendly bartenders who know their stuff, don’t miss it! Vanilla Food Café at Noosa Junction offers healthy fare that’s good for you and tastes great too. You’ll also find a Super IGA supermarket here for stocking up on self-catering supplies.

Nudge Nudge Wink Wink brings the vibe of New York to Noosa (minus the drink prices in US dollars) and the kind of cool crowd who understand there’s no cut off age for enjoying a good night out. Styled after a New York speakeasy, the vibe is cool, the couches are comfortable, the snacks come from a kitchen not out of a jar, and cocktails go far beyond the usual.

Telephone Call From Istanbul is a hole-in-the-wall bar that might be small but it’s got a great local vibe and a menu created by a rotating group of guest chefs. One night you could get a Telephone Call From Greece, the next time it could be a Telephone Call From Thailand or India. Most of the seating is outdoors so it’s best to drop in when the weather is good.

Telephone Call from Istanbul

Moonstruck on Hastings Street serves two of my favourite things: coffee and gin. Drop in for a light lunch or coffee or during the day then enjoy the sultry gin joint ambiance when the sun goes down. The gin cocktails here were some of the best we’ve had anywhere. If you don’t like gin, there are plenty of other choices as well.

There is truly something for everyone to enjoy. This Ultimate Noosa Travel Guide will help you plan a relaxing and unforgettable trip.

What to Expect in Noosa

Currency: Australian Dollar. Things in Noosa are relatively expensive, that’s not to say that you can’t travel here if you are on a budget. There is room for every type of traveller in this coastal town, from luxury to budget backpackers.

Language: English, however you will probably run into a lot of European Backpackers both in the streets and completing their working holiday visas.

Climate: Noosa enjoys hot/warm summers and warm/mild winters. Which is perfect because it means you can travel here at any time of year. However if you travel in winter you can expect a few rainy days.

Getting Around: When arriving in Noosa the closest airport is located in Maroochydore which is about a 30 minute drive. You can easily get a taxi or uber from the Airport to your accommodation, or you can hire a car when you land. Noosa also has buses as a form of public transport so if you are wanting to do day trips but stay within budget this might be a better option.

When you are in Noosa however, you are able to walk pretty much everywhere. And anywhere that is a little further away you can either get an uber or the bus.

Where to stay

There are two main areas to stay in Noosa, up at Noosaville or Noosa Heads. Where you stay will all depend on what your budget is and where you’d rather be situated. When in Noosa you should try to experience as many of the fabulous restaurants as possible. Also make it a priority to have at least one cocktail by the beach, as this is a staple activity for anyone visiting. Below I have listed a few of the best places to visit, and some must eats to add to your Noosa Travel Guide.

Surf Club: Located on Noosa Main Beach, Noosa Surf Club offers a laid back dining experience. The menu consists of a lot of seafood and aussie pub style meals. They also have a great bar so you can enjoy a drink with a view.

Bistro C: If you are looking for award winning beach front dining, then Bistro C is for you. All dishes are inspired by local produce that showcases the changing seasons of Noosa.

Things to do

Noosa has a lot to offer if you are looking to unwind and relax. Below I have included the best things to do in Noosa and day trips in the surrounding area. Hopefully you will be able to add some of these to your list, for the next time you visit.

Noosa Main Beach: Head down and spend the day swimming, sunbaking and relaxing at the Main Beach. This is the perfect spot as it is absolutely beautiful and also close to all the action. It can get very busy here in summer though, so head down early to get a good spot.

Little Cove: If you are wanting to have a beach day but are looking for somewhere a bit lowkey, then head over to Little Cove. This beach is located next door to Noosa Main Beach but it is much more quiet, and maybe even more beautiful.

Hastings Street: Treat yourself to a day of shopping on Hastings Street. Visit all the boutique stores and pick up some unique clothing items. Or go for a long lunch at one of the many restaurants along the street.

Noosa National Park: If you are looking for something a little more active to do then head for a bush walk in the National Park. The Hells Gate track is a personal favourite, as it has stunning views and is a little bit of a challenge. You could also try and find the fairy pools to have a swim in, but make sure you do this at low tide.

Water Sports: Try your hand at surfing, stand up paddle boarding or jet skiing. At the Main Beach you can hire surf boards and paddle boards for a couple of hours or the whole day. This can be a super fun activity for all ages, and is something a bit different to try out.

Australia Zoo : A day trip to Australia Zoo is a must while staying in Noosa. Hire a car or catch the bus and spend the day looking around this iconic Australian destination. Learn about the wildlife and conservation efforts of the Irwin Family and even get the chance to see them feed crocs in the Crocoseum.

Eumundi Markets: Another day trip that you can do while in Noosa is to the Eumundi Markets. These are only held on Saturdays and Wednesdays so make sure you plan ahead as they can be super busy. You can find some great little gems here so it’s definitely worth a visit.

A guide to Noosa, Sunshine Coast

Updated On 4th February, 2024

A guide to Noosa, Sunshine Coast

Noosa is a hidden gem on the Sunshine Coast of Australia, and one of the most beautiful places to visit on the  East Coast of Australia

I was so glad to finally make it to  Noosa  after skipping both the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast on my two previous adventures in  Australia.

I had intended to stop off in both 2014 and 2015 but time ran away with me (I was having too much fun) and I guess the likes of  Fraser Island,  the  Whitsundays  and  Byron Bay  tend to take the limelight for the backpacker ‘must do’s. But both the  Sunshine Coast  and the  Gold Coast  are hotspots in their own right and I finally managed to spare some time to explore them this time around.

In this Noosa travel guide, I am going to share with you the best things to do in Noosa, the best things to see in Noosa and the best places to eat and drink in Noosa. Hopefully, by the end of this blog post, you will have a Noosa bucket list ready to go and you will be ready to keep your eyes peeled for wild koalas. Yep, I said it. Here in Noosa National Park, spotting wild koalas is not uncommon!

Cairns to Sydney: The alternative bucket list

Where is Noosa?

Noosa   is a little town on the Sunshine Coast , the slice of the east coast that stretches from Caloundra all the way up to the Cooloola section of the Great Sandy National Park.

Just a 90-minute drive north on the Bruce Highway from Brisbane, Noosa is the perfect addition to a road trip from Brisbane to  Cairns .  If you’re looking to fly in , the Sunshine Coast airport (MCY) is just a 30-minute drive away and  if you’re backpacking   or   travelling with  Greyhound , it is most definitely one of the stops you can opt to jump off at.

Known for its national park, heavy surf culture, and being the gateway to World Heritage destination Fraser Island, Noosa is not one to miss. I only stayed for 2 days prior to my  Nomads Fraser Island  trip, but I loved every minute.

Where should you stay in Noosa?

I stayed at Nomads Hostel during my stay which has a super chill vibe and a pretty cool layout, for a hostel. There’s a pool, a BBQ area, a bar and my favourite part? All the hostel rooms are all in a big (kind of) circle, which definitely adds to the family feel. It’s near to the main strip of restaurants and bars. It’s a 15-minute walk from the main beach and a 2-minute walk to the supermarket.  I definitely recommend staying here.

Top tip: If you book onto the  Nomads Fraser  trip you can get up to 2 nights pre/post trip accommodation for just $10 a night.

I’ve also heard great things about YHA Noosa and  Halse Lodge  if you want to look into a few different hostels.

Things to do in Noosa…

  • Walk through Noosa National Park.

If you ask anyone about what to do in Noosa, I can guarantee (unless they are an avid surfer) that the first thing they will mention is the the National Park. You can spend the whole day, or as long as you like, walking the coastal route and paths within the park and if you’re there at the right time of year, whale and dolphin sightings aren’t uncommon. There are lots of little bays and benches to take a rest on along the way so pack in lots of water, some snacks and also your swimmers if you fancy a dip in the big blue!

  • Take a dip in the fairy pools.

Walk through the National Park path until you get to a bench. Then clamber down the rocks and you’ll find the secret (but not so secret) pools.

  • Walk up to the  Laguna Lookout  to watch the sun set over Noosa.

If you walk out of Nomad’s Noosa and turn left as if you’re walking to main beach, quite early on, as you get to the top of the hill, there’s a right turn with a sign to the lookout. Follow the road (and the guaranteed company you’ll have for sunset) for about 20 minutes until you reach the lookout. Take some beers or a picnic and enjoy the gorgeous views over the ocean and town.

  • Hang out on the Main Beach.

Take your surf board down or just some snacks and a beach towel and enjoy the gorgeous sands and water here in Noosa.

  • Look out for koalas.

Koala sightings aren’t unusual in Noosa so keep your eyes peeled at all times. We spotted one climbing for his dinner on the way up to Laguna Lookout in the trees.

  • Visit Fraser Island.

Fraser island, for those of you unaware,  is a must do on the east coast  and is the world’s largest sand island.

Tours leave  daily  for Fraser Island from  Hervey Bay, Rainbow Bay and Noosa  and involve 4X4 safaris around the stunning hotspots, lakes, beach drives and off road tracks that the island has to offer.

Noosa Tours & Vacations

An aerial view of Noosa National Park and beach at sunset in Queensland Australia

Revel in the natural beauty of one of Queensland’s most stylish beach villages.

Noosa has a certain star quality and just like a Hollywood A-lister, this stunning beachside town knows how to show off those natural good looks to full advantage. With plenty of stylish boutiques, classic restaurants and stylish bars in Noosa Heads, the main tourist strip is deservedly popular but there is so much more to this holiday destination than meets the eye. Whether you prefer kayaking on an Everglades tour, sailing around the stunning coastline, horse riding at Lake Weyba, eating your way up and down Hastings Street or hitting the trails in Noosa National Park, you will find plenty to keep you entertained as you soak up this region's famous weather.

At this stage we don't have any organised trips to Noosa.

That said, Intrepid can create tailor-made tours to many destinations, including Noosa. Our fully customized trips still offer the same small group experiences with local leaders, but made just the way you want it. How do I get to Noosa

Noosa is a 2-hour drive north of Brisbane along the Bruce Highway. Sunshine Coast Airport is the closest airport to Noosa.

If you fly into Sunshine Coast Airport, you will need to drive, catch a public bus or a taxi, or arrange a shuttle bus transfer to Noosa.

The trip from Sunshine Coast Airport to Noosa takes approximately 40 minutes by car and slightly longer on the bus which stops along the way.

Getting around at Noosa

It's easy to walk around Noosa as most of the area is flat, aside from the hill between Noosa Heads and Noosa Junction.

If you would like to travel further afield, local bus services are available. You can also catch a taxi, get an Uber or rent a hire car.

When should I visit Noosa?

Anytime of year is a good time to visit Noosa. Summer is hot and humid and perfect for swimming.

Spring and Autumn are cooler and Noosa Heads and the surrounding area tends to be quieter.

In winter, whales are frequently spotted in the surrounding waters.

School holidays are exceptionally busy and best avoided as Noosa accommodation prices are high and popular spots such as Noosa's Main Beach, Little Cove Beach, and the Eumundi Markets can be crowded. It can also be difficult to get a seat on some Noosa tours and at popular Noosa restaurants.

What should I pack for Noosa?

Noosa is a laid back destination so pack casual clothes such as active wear for enjoying Noosa National Park, casual dresses and shorts and t-shirts.

Pack a few smart casual outfits or resort wear if you're planning on visiting any of the more upmarket restaurants and bars on Hastings Street.

Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat are a must, even in winter, as the sun reflects off the sparkling ocean.

There is a convenience store in Hastings Street and a supermarket at Noosa Junction if you have forgotten to pack any essentials.

What should I wear at Noosa?

Noosa is a laid back destination so people tend to wear casual clothes such as active wear and shorts and t-shirts.

However, you might want to dress up in smart casual clothes or resort wear to fit in with the stylish local crowd at the upmarket restaurants and bars on Hastings Street.

What is the internet like at Noosa?

There is good Wi-Fi coverage in and around Noosa.

If you are visiting the Noosa North Shore or exploring the Noosa Everglades you may experience short periods with no internet access.

Can I use my mobile/cell phone at Noosa?

Introduction to Noosa

We moved to Noosa around six months ago, and we have absolutely fallen in love with this part of Queensland . From stunning beaches, pristine natural areas, amazing food and drink and so many activities on the water, you won’t be short of things to do in Noosa. The region is full of incredible things to do for people of all budgets, tastes, and ages. I could easily list 101 things to do. But in this post, I will highlight 30 of our favourite things to do in Noosa.

Need more information about visiting Noosa? Check out our huuuuge Noosa Travel Guide for everything you need to know about travelling to Noosa!

Things to do in Noosa

Writing this post was so easy! I had no trouble at all coming up with 30 things to do in Noosa, and I probably could have kept going. It is such a special place, and I hope by reading this list you are inspired to visit. And I know once you’re here you’ll think so too. Let’s get into it!

1. Hike the Noosa National Park

Experience Australia’s most visited national park. Dramatic cliffs, coastal trails, beautiful bays, and lush hinterland tracks are just some of what you can expect on a walk in the Noosa National Park. If you’re lucky you might spot a furry koala, dolphins playing offshore, or even a humpback whale migrating along the coast in winter. The 10.8km return ‘Coastal Walk’ encompasses all the highlights of the park, and is the most popular walk that hits all the highlights. This is number one on our list for a reason, and we think it’s undeniably the best thing to do in Noosa. Check out our full guide to the Coastal Walk and Noosa National Park here.

2. Hit the beach

The beaches in Noosa are top-notch, and you won’t be blamed if you flop on the sand and stay there for your whole holiday! There are so many beaches to choose from, depending on what you’re looking for. Main Beach is a popular choice being right on Hastings Street, with (usually) gentle waves and beautifully clear, warm water. If you don’t love waves (like me!), head to the Noosa Spit at the river mouth. Or if you are chasing a big swell, the east coast beaches (Sunshine, Castaways, Peregian etc.) are open beaches with larger waves. For more information on the different beaches around Noosa, check out our post here .

3. Cruise through the Noosa Everglades

The Noosa Everglades are a pristine maze of waterways in the upper reaches of the Noosa River. Known as the ‘river of mirrors’ for the reflections on the still water, stained red by the tannins from tea trees growing on the banks. Taking a boat tour, or kayaking through the Everglades is one of the best things to do in Noosa. The Everglades is a truly special place, and paddling along the river surrounded by trees, listening to the sounds of birds is a wonderful experience in nature.

4. Catch a sunset

Sunsets in Noosa are something special, and I would advise everyone to plan their days around seeing the sunset! Being on the east coast, it’s not as easy as rocking up to any beach. But the Hastings Street and Main Beach area is orientated north, so you get a decent view from there! Some of our favourite places for sunset are by the river in Noosaville, the Noosa Spit and Little Cove beach. Read more about these spots and others in our post about sunsets in Noosa .

Sunset at Noosa Spit

5. Explore Noosaville

Noosaville is one of our favourite places in Noosa and it is so worth venturing out of the Hastings Street area to explore it. Spend an afternoon wandering along the river foreshore, have a picnic, grab a coffee or cocktail at one of the many restaurants. Hit the water on a boat, kayak, paddleboard or simply for a swim. Hang around the front of Noosa Boathouse on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday afternoon to enjoy free live music, and do as the locals do and pack a cheese platter and a bottle of wine.

6. Find the freshest produce at Noosa Farmers Market

If you’re wondering where all the locals disappear to on a Sunday morning, it’s the Noosa Farmers Market . Held at the local Australian Rules Football ground in Noosaville, the market holds over 40 stalls and is a hive of activity each week. Mainly offering fresh produce, you can find anything from fresh fruit and vegetables to meat and seafood, dairy products, cheese, sauces and condiments, bread and more! All fresh from the local Sunshine Coast area.

Even if you’re on holiday and don’t need a week’s worth of groceries, a visit to the market is a must-do. Stock up on some fruits for snacks at the beach, some gourmet goodies for a sunset cheese platter, or grab some food and coffee for breaky from one of the many food stalls.

7. Ride a wave

Surfing is such a massive part of Noosa’s culture and identity. So much so that Noosa is actually recognised as a World Surfing Reserve. Whether you’re an old hand on the board, or just getting started, there is the right break for you here in Noosa. You can rent boards from plenty of places around Hastings Street, and also down the coast in Sunshine and Sunrise Beach. And if you need a helping hand, you can take a surf lesson from one of the many surf schools. They will let you know the best place for your lesson based on the day’s conditions. Go Ride a Wave is a popular choice for board hire and lessons.

8. Rent a boat on the Noosa River

While you’re in Noosaville, hit the water and explore the Noosa River. You can choose from a kayak, stand up paddleboard, foil board or boat from one of many hire places situated on the foreshore. There are plenty of boats available for hire that don’t require boat licenses. Some even have BBQs or pizza ovens on board, so you can spend an afternoon cruising the waterways! This is one of our favourite sunny day activities. Bring aboard some drinks, nibbles, a speaker and fishing gear for an enjoyable afternoon on the water. Some of the best rental places are O-Boat , U-Drive Boat Hire and Ready2Go Boat Hire .

9. Eat, eat and eat some more

Throw out any thoughts of a beachside holiday town with fish and chips, and a pub in the food department. Although Noosa has both great fish and chips and some good pubs, the food scene here has a lot more to offer than that! No matter your budget or cuisine preference, there will be a restaurant/bar/cafe/brewery for you. Make sure eating is a big part of your Noosa itinerary, and plan out your must-eats! If you’re visiting in peak season, you should definitely try and book ahead at some of the more popular restaurants. We share our ten favourite restaurants here , as well as our best cheap eats for those on a budget here .

10. See Noosa from above at Laguna Lookout

Noosa is a pretty beautiful place from ground level. But getting some elevation and seeing it from above gives you another perspective on the maze of rivers, sandy coastline and lush forest making up the region. Laguna Lookout is within walking distance from Hastings Street and offers beautiful views over the river and surrounding mountains. It’s a great sunset spot too!

Laguna Lookout at sunset

11. Catalina party boat cruise

The M.V. Catalina is a bit of an institution in Noosa. If you like being out on the water, and you don’t mind a cheeky beverage and a bit of a dance, this is the perfect thing for you! On Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons, you will see groups of dressed-up revellers ready to board the M.V. Catalina from its dock in Noosaville. The Catalina cruises up and down the Noosa River for three and a half hours. With an onboard bar, DJ and stunning sunset views, this is the ultimate night out in Noosa (and in typical Noosa fashion it’s all done and dusted before 8 pm!). We have had a ball boogying on the top deck of the Catalina with a cocktail in hand!

Things to do in Noosa party on the Catalina Boat

12. Sunset at the top of Mount Tinbeerwah

A short drive from Noosa in the Tewantin National Park is Mount Tinbeerwah. This isn’t a mountain that requires a big climb, and you can drive up Tinbeerwah Road nearly all the way to the top. From there, it’s a short 550-metre walk on a paved path to a lookout tower. You get absolutely stunning 360° views all around the coastline and the hinterland. This is an amazing spot for sunset, and the sun goes down behind the surrounding mountains. Bring up a picnic and a drink, and find a spot on the rocks to enjoy the sunset. We prefer not to go all the way to the top of the mountain. Instead, there are plenty of spots out on the rocks that face towards the sunset in the mountains (not the coast), that are perfect to lay down a picnic rug.

Mount Tinbeerwah sunset mountain

13. Drink at all the breweries and distilleries

Whether you like beer, cider, vodka or gin, there is a brewery or distillery for you in the Noosa area! And it’s not just drinks on offer. These venues serve up some great food, in a great setting. Most with a really cool, industrial vibe and often live music happening too. For beer lovers, there are a few options, all in Noosaville. Heads of Noosa , Land and Sea and Boiling Pot . And if you prefer spirits, 2020 Distillery in Cooroy makes gin and some great cheese platters. Pomona Distilling Co is a great outdoor venue in the hinterland, making some delicious vodka and gin. And within the walls of Land & Sea is Noosa Heads Distillery , who make Fortune Gin.

14. Take a walk

There’s no shortage of stunning spots for a walk in Noosa. Combine that with the beautiful weather we have year-round, and it’s the perfect place to lace up your runners. From short strolls to more strenuous hikes and even mountain climbs there are plenty of different tracks to explore. We love walking along the boardwalk from Noosa Main Beach to the entrance of the national park. The Noosa National Park itself, of course, is great for a walk. Wandering along the Noosa River foreshore in Noosaville and through the Noosa Woods are a few more of our favourites.

Going for a walk is a good thing to do in Noosa

15. Go stand up paddleboarding

Paddleboarding is a popular activity in Noosa, and no matter which body of water you’re visiting you’re likely to see some SUP’ers. The Noosa River in Noosaville is a great spot to launch your stand up paddleboard. You can rent boards from one of the many boat hire places on the waterfront in Gympie Terrace, like Noosa Stand Up Paddle . There are many different routes you can choose, paddling through the expensive mansions, around Goat Island or across to the Noosa North Shore. Wherever you rent your SUP from should show you a map and give you a rundown of possible routes. You can also head up to the Noosa Everglades, at Lake Cootharabara. There is board hire available here from Lake Escapades.

Stand up paddle boarding in Noosa

16. Explore the Noosa Woods

Past the end of the busy and bustling Hastings Street, you will find the Noosa Woods. This parkland fronts onto the Noosa River and is full of walking paths, open lawn areas, BBQs, sheltered areas, secret coves for swimming and a ton of wildlife. It is the antithesis of the busy and bustling Noosa Main Beach. So if you’re looking for somewhere quiet to lay out your towel, read a book in the sun and go for a dip in the river this is a good bet. The water here is clean and calm, and on a windy day, it’s much nicer here than on the beach. Get lost wandering through the mangroves, and find the sandbags out on the point. It’s a peaceful spot to watch the sunset.

Noosa Woods

17. Hike the Noosa Trail Network

Criss-crossed around the Noosa Hinterland is a network of walking and biking trails known as the Noosa Trail Network. There are eight different trails to choose from, crossing countryside, rainforest, lakes and lookouts, through national park, private property and state forest. The trails are up to 25 km long, but there are smaller sections you can do if you’re not up for the whole trail. We have done a portion of the Kin Kin Countryside Loop (Trail 4), and it was a stunning walk. We passed through rolling hills, paddocks of cows, rainforest streams and lush forest. You can find a map and information about all the trails on the Noosa Council website here .

Noosa Trail Network

18. Wander Hastings Street

Although there is more to Noosa than the infamous Hastings Street, you can’t visit the area and not explore Hastings Street. It really is a beautiful street, with trees lining the paths, fairy lights lit up at night, and turkeys wandering around. Cafes, restaurants and bars spill out onto the footpath, and most dining is open-air due to Noosa’s beautiful year-round weather. Our picks would be coffee from Cafe le Monde , a cheap Vietnamese bahn mi for lunch from Cach Song , an afternoon cocktail at Miss Moneypenny’s , and a fancy dinner at Bang Bang .

Hastings Street Noosa

19. Find the hidden Noosa Fairy Pools

Hidden inside the Noosa National Park is the Insta-famous Noosa Fairy Pools . These tidal rockpools have blown up on social media, and I totally understand why. The pools are completely hidden from view on the coastal trail, and you need to head off the path and scramble down some rocks to find them. If you time your tides correctly, you can swim in a perfectly calm ocean pool, surrounded by fish and corals. It feels like pure magic when you’re floating around in there. Definitely somewhere fairies would live! The pools are pretty popular now, so if you visit on the weekend you will be joined by many others. But if you can hack an early wake up, you will most likely be rewarded with the pools to yourself, which is a really special experience. Get instructions on how to find these hidden pools here .

things to do in Noosa Fairy Pools

20. Climb Mount Cooroora

If the Noosa National Park wasn’t tough enough for you, say hello to Mount Cooroora. This foreboding volcanic plug can be seen from Noosa and looms over the hinterland town of Pomona. The loop trail is only 2.5 km but climbs to an altitude of 439 m. The trail starts out as a walk, but as you get closer to the summit, it turns into more of a scramble. There are chains to help you hoist yourself up the rock. The views at the top are completely worth it, with a 360° look around the hinterland and coast. You need decent, sturdy shoes for the rocky terrain and plenty of water. Head into Pomona afterwards for a coffee at Pomona Village Kitchen , or a drink at Pomona Distilling Co.

21. Swim at the Noosa Spit

This area is one of our favourite places in Noosa and is an absolutely essential thing to do in Noosa! The Spit is at the River Mouth, where the ocean flows into the Noosa River. Hidden away down the very end of Hastings Street, this (in our opinion) is the best spot to come for a swim. The water here is crystal clear, so blue, and nice and calm without the waves you find on the coastal beaches. Plus, the Spit is one of the best spots to watch the sunset! So come for an arvo swim, and pack a drink and a picnic to stay for sunset.

22. Eat, drink and shop in Noosa Junction

Many tourists never venture up the hill away from Hastings Street to Noosa Junction. But it is well worth wandering up and checking out this area, which is more frequented by locals. Sunshine Beach Road is lined with cafes, restaurants, bars and boutiques. And some of the area’s best food and drink is found here! Start your day with brunch at VanillaFood , grab a crepe for lunch from Flo’s Crêperie . Have a sunset drink at local favourite Village Bicycle , and dinner has to be at Light Years for the most amazing Asian fusion cuisine. Keep your eyes peeled for the cool street art around the area too!

23. Visit Peregian Beach

Peregian Beach is a lively little village that is well worth visiting. Centred around the Village Square, spend some time exploring the lovely little boutiques, cute cafes and restaurants. The Peregian Beach Markets are held in a park on the beachfront every 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month, and if you can time your visit around that it’s worth it! The beach at Peregian is beautiful, so don’t forget to bring your swimmers and a towel.

24. See the sunrise on an eastern beach

Sunsets in Noosa are pretty amazing, and you’re probably more likely to be awake to see one of those on your holiday. But there’s something special about being up for the sunrise, especially on the east coast. It’s true, Queenslanders wake up pretty early. But if you head down to the beach before the sunrise, you won’t have to share it with too many others! Any of the eastern beaches, like Sunshine, Sunrise (all in the name!), Castaways, or Peregian Beach are a great spot to see the sunrise up over the ocean. And there are plenty of cafes close by for your coffee afterwards! Try Chalet & Co in Sunrise Beach, Entity in Sunshine Beach or Skål Coffee in Peregian Beach.

Castaways Beach sunrise

25. Go fishing

Although I’m not an angler myself, Noosa is a great spot for fishing. The river, lakes and ocean are all at your doorstep. You can fish off a boat, in the river or out on a deep-sea charter. From the beach, or at one of many docks/bridges/marinas/rock walls around the area. There are many companies that offer deep-sea fishing charters. Or you can rent your own boat in Noosaville to fish in the river.

26. Head to the hinterland

The Noosa Hinterland (also referred to as Noosa Country) is just as scenic as the coast, in a different way. A short drive away from the beach and you won’t be blamed for feeling like you’re in a whole other world! Small country towns, bush tracks, mountains and lush rainforests can all be found in the hinterland. There are some amazing farm-to-plate style restaurants, local arts and crafts, and markets around the area. Check out the towns of Cooroy, Cooran, Pomona and Kin Kin. Visit Noosa has some great Noosa Country drive itineraries you can follow to hit the highlights.

Pomona things to do in Noosa

27. Relax at Lake Weyba

A saltwater tidal lake that flows from the Noosa River, Lake Weyba is a hidden gem tucked away behind Peregian Beach. The lake is very shallow, with warm calm waters. It’s a great spot for a swim or a paddleboard in the gentle waters. The lake is fringed by bush, which feels really peaceful. There are plenty of spots for a picnic, and walking trails around the lake. There is a very famous tree here, that is featured by many local photographers in sunrise photos. You will see the ‘Weyba Tree’ on Google Maps. Check it out while you’re at the lake!

Lake Weyba

28. Visit the Noosa Botanic Gardens

About 20 minutes drive from Noosa, before the hinterland town of Cooroy, is the Noosa Botanic Gardens. On the shores of Lake Macdonald, these eight-hectare gardens are lovely to walk through. There are different sections to discover, and we particularly liked the cactus garden. But the star of the show is the Roman-style amphitheatre overlooking the lake. Pack a picnic or some snacks, as there are tables and chairs and plenty of lawn areas.

Noosa Botanic Gardens

29. Check out Sunshine Beach

A little smaller than Peregian Beach, Sunshine Beach is one of the larger villages around the area. Centred around Duke Street, there are a lot of great restaurants and cafes. Entity is great for coffee, and we loved the Asian cuisine at O-Ren Brewhous e. The Sunshine Beach Surf Club is much nicer than the one in Hastings Street, with yummy food and amazing ocean views. The northern end of Sunshine Beach meets with the other side of the Noosa National Park. If you want a good view of the beach, climb the ‘Sunshine Beach stairs’, which is the entrance to the national park.

30 Unmissable Things to do in Noosa

30. Shop at the Eumundi Markets

Whilst technically on the border of the Noosa Shire, Eumundi is a must-visit when in the area. Each Wednesday and Saturday, this town comes alive with hundreds of market stalls for the famous Eumundi Markets . From handicrafts to home decor, clothes to candles, food and even dog accessories, basically anything you can think of is for sale here! Even if you’re not looking to buy anything, it’s an experience to wander through the markets. There are plenty of food trucks, live music and it’s a great atmosphere.

30 Unmissable Things to do in Noosa

While you’re in Eumundi, head to the Imperial Hotel . Home to the Eumundi Brewery , which makes some great local beers and ginger beer. And also the Eumundi Distillery , which makes gin. Their earl grey gin is the best gin I have ever had! The venue itself is stunning, with beautiful furniture, colourful wall art and plants everywhere.
