If you would like to buy a prepaid sim card on arrival in Spain then the airport is the most convenient place to get a sim card. However, sim card deals at airports are always slightly more expensive than in a phone store in the city center.

Why buying a sim card for Spain

Traveling becomes so much more convenient with an active data connection on your phone. It can be as easy as ordering a taxi on the streets, or finding a cool roof top bar or restaurant nearby. Getting directions from navigation apps is so normal, but with a working data connection suddenly becomes a challenge.

But what about emergencies or if you need to access your banking apps? The easiest way to stay connected is an e-sim card, but the best way to stay connected is buying a local prepaid sim card for Spain. Spain sim cards for tourists are not too expensive and it is worth investing a couple dollars to stay online.

Also don't rely on public WiFi, it is not everywhere available and begging for the WiFi password is annoying. Also keep in mind that using the internet on public WiFi is through an unsecured connection. The use of a VPN is recommended to protect your data!

If you don't like to swap your sim card for another one you can use an e-sim card. If your phone is not compatible for an e-sim card then you should look into getting a portable WiFi device. Buying a prepaid sim card in Spain is simple. Make sure you phone is unlocked, walk into any mobile internet store, ask for a prepaid sim card for Spain, put it in your phone, get it activated and within a couple minutes you are online.

My recommendation

Mobile internet providers in Spain

Spain has 4 big mobile internet providers that all sell prepaid sim cards for tourists. Orange and Vodafone are the two well known European brands and then there is also Movistar and Mas Movil. Mas Movil operates in Spain under the name Yoigo and phone stores around Spain are called Yoigo, Mas Movil is the mother company.

All mobile internet providers sell prepaid sim cards for tourists. However, you can only get physical prepaid sim cards in stores in Spain. Es-sim cards for tourists are not available, but you can order e-sim cards for Spain on the internet.

Where to buy a sim card for Spain

At any international airport you will find either mobile internet provider stores or book shops selling prepaid sim cards for Spain. If I don't have an e-sim yet looking for a sim card shop is one of the first things I do on arrival. But be aware that buying a sim card at the airport is always more expensive than in the city center.

Buying a sim card at Barcelona Airport

At Barcelona Airport you can find a couple different Spain sim card deals. An Orange sim card for €15 is the best buy and will give you 9 GB data all over Europe and €5 calling credit. For more info on sim cards at Barcelona Airport check out the link above.

Buying a sim card at Madrid Airport

Official phone stores city center

Once you are settled in your hotel simply search for your preferred Spain sim card provider in Google Maps. Mobile phone shops are mostly always clustered in the city center. In Barcelona, Alicante, Malaga and Madrid it is very easy to find a phone store near your hotel, even in Ibiza and Mallorca there are multiple places that sell Spain sim cards for tourists as well as on the airport of Ibiza and Mallorca.

Convenience stores

You can also buy prepaid sim card at the bigger gas stations and convenience stores. But there won't be any service and you will have to activate the sim card yourself. Not recommended for tourists unless you know what you are doing.

Prices prepaid sim cards in Spain in 2024

Prices for prepaid sim cards in Spain are pretty good. All the Spain mobile internet providers are constantly publishing offers. All the below prices are up to date as per March 2024. Prices are in Euros: $1 USD = €0.92 EUR and €1 EUR = $1.09 USD.

Movistar prepaid sim card

The Movistar prepaid sim card deals have become A LOT BETTER in 2024. The above offers are great Spain prepaid sim card deals and the Movistar prepaid sim cards are 5G ready. Movistar does NOT provide e-sim cards for tourists, only physical sim cards are available for tourists. For more info check the  Movistar  website. 

Vodafone prepaid sim card

Also Vodafone updated their prepaid sim prices for 2024 and we all benefit! Great news: Vodafone allows prepaid sim card costumers to use 5G network.

For €10 EUR you get 50 GB data. All the prepaid sim card packages offer EU roaming, but EU data roaming is limited to 19 GB outside of Spain. Unfortunately in Vodafone stores in Spain they only sell physical prepaid sim cards, e-sim cards are NOT available for tourists. For more info and check the Vodafone Spain website.

Orange prepaid sim card

These are the latest Orange Spain prepaid sim card plans available for tourists. They have 3 different data packages available. Free EU roaming is included in the above data packages of Orange Spain and packages are valid for 4 weeks.

A little downside of an Orange Spain prepaid sim card is that they are NOT 5G ready, max speed is 4G/LTE. Orange does NOT provide e-sim cards for tourists, only physical prepaid sim cards are available in Orange stores. Check the  Orange website for more info. 

Yoigo prepaid sim card

Yoigo is a brand of Mas Movil and also operates on the Mas Movil mobile data network.

Their data packages for prepaid sim cards are smaller than all the other mobile internet providers. Yoigo does NOT provide e-sim cards for prepaid users. For more info check the Yoigo  website.

Best 4G/5G mobile data network in Spain in 2024

It is not all about prices for prepaid sim card plans when determining the best prepaid sim card for tourists in Spain. Another important ranking factor is the 4G/5G network in Spain. We are already in 2024, we don't want to get stuck with slow 3G.

Is there 5G in Spain?

Yes, there is 5G in Spain and as of March 2024 it is widespread around the country. Pretty much all the tourist destinations and amazing places to visit are covered with a 5G signal.

A bummer is that most of the Spain mobile internet providers still do not offer 5G data speed for prepaid sim cards. The only who allows 5G for prepaid sim cards in Spain is Vodafone. For more detailed 4G/5G coverage maps of Spain , check the link.

Although the above mobile data network coverage maps are updated for 2024 they are not 100% accurate. However, they are a great reference to compare the 4G/5G networks of the mobile internet providers in Spain in 2024.

When comparing the above Spain 4G/5G network coverage maps from all mobile internet providers in Spain we can see that all of them have an excellent 4G/5G network all around the country. Only small details make the difference.

Vodafone claims on their website to have won prices for the best 5G network in Spain, but Traveltomtom's conlcusion after comparing the network coverage maps of Orange, Mas Movil, Movistar and Vodafone is that Movistar has a the most extensive mobile data network and the  best 4G/5G network coverage in Spain in 2024.

That said, all other mobile internet providers have great 4G/5G network coverage in all tourist destinations in Spain.

Best sim card for Spain in 2024

E-sim cards for Spain are an amazingly easy way to get connected when traveling to Spain in 2024 and there are some great e-sim card deals. But when comparing e-sim cards for Spain with local prepaid sim cards in Spain then it is an easy conclusion that local prepaid sim cards are much cheaper.

Downside is that you need to go to a phone store in Spain on arrival. With an e-sim card you are online as soon as the plane lands. Traveltomtom recommends ordering a Spain e-sim card from either  Airalo ,  SimOptions  or  Nomad .

Local prepaid sim cards for tourists are cheap in Spain and for €10 EUR you can already get 50 GB data. Another great thing about Spain prepaid sim cards is that they allow free EU roaming, although most sim cards are capped at around 15 - 20 GB data. Always ask about EU roaming limitation when buying a prepaid sim card in Spain.

When comparing the mobile internet operators in Spain we can see that for 2024 there is very little difference between Mas Movil/Yoigo, Movistar, Vodafone and Orange. All providers have amazing prepaid sim card plans for tourists with a lot of data and all the providers have an excellent 4G/5G mobile data network.

It is a close call between Movistar and Vodafone but Traveltomtom rates Movistar as the best prepaid sim card for Spain in 2024.

When traveling to Spain, having a sim card is essential for easy navigation and staying connected. Access to the internet allows you to find the best restaurants, get directions to your accommodation, book a taxi, and share photos with your family on the go.

While roaming is an option, international fees can quickly become expensive. That’s why we recommend either an eSIM or a local sim card for access to affordable local phone rates.

Fortunately, obtaining either option is a breeze in Spain, but it’s helpful to know which one is the best fit for you. This comprehensive guide provides all the information you need to purchase a sim card in Spain, including updated pricing and the top recommendations.

Data in Spain is super cheap. For just 10 EUR you can get a sim card with a massive amount of data that lasts an entire month. I’m not really sure why the main operators offer higher priced plans considering very few users will require more than 25GB of data in a month!

That’s great news for travellers heading to Spain. The 10 EUR prepaid sim card from Orange, Vodafone or Movistar will be absolutely perfect for anyone. However, if I had to pick the best sim card in Spain then I’d go with Vodafone as it offers 5G in all of the main tourist centers in Spain. This means faster internet.

On top of this, they all offer fantastic roaming plans across the EU AND the UK.

If you love eSims then my preferred eSim in Spain is the Airalo Spain eSim . However, due to the huge data plans and low cost nature of the local sim cards I would still recommend picking one up when you arrive in Spain.

Spain Sim Card Prices

A Tourist Sim Card in Spain costs 10 EUR in April 2024, however, the exact price will often depend on the store you visit and the plan you choose.

Alternatively, an eSim in Spain will cost between $4.50 USD and $26 USD. This, again, depends on how much data you require and which eSim provider you choose.

I generally recommend this Airalo plan for most tourists visiting Spain which includes 5GB of data which is valid for 30 days and costs $11.50 USD.

In Spain, the main SIM card providers are Orange, Vodafone, and Movistar. How to Get a Sim Card in Spain

Identify mobile providers: Orange, Vodafone and Movistar are your best options in Spain.

Find your nearest store: Locate a store or retailer by searching on Google Maps for your nearest store or asking at your hotel reception. I’ve never had issues finding a store as they can usually be found in major cities, shopping centers, or tourist areas. If possible, I always recommend to to avoid airports and head in to an official store in the city.

Bring the necessary documents: It is always a good idea to carry your passport or identification documents for sim card registration purposes. We’ve found most providers will need to confirm your identity to provide a sim card and it can be a major hassle to head to a store only to have to come back again later with your passport.

Choose your plan: Either request the plan you are after or consult with the staff in the store to select the right plan for you. My recommendations at the beginning of this guide are a good starting point, but the staff will usually be able to suggest the best option.

Pay and activate your card: Pay for the SIM card and plan, and the staff will activate it for you.

Test: It’s always a good idea to check that you can access the internet before you leave the store. I always search for something on Google then refresh my Instagram feed to check it’s working fine.

Where to Get a Sim Card in Spain

At the airport.

Buying a prepaid sim card for Spain at the airport is usually considered the most convenient option for travellers arriving by plane.

However, airport stores selling sim cards are almost guaranteed to charge inflated prices, so if you are a cost-conscious traveller then you should definitely buy your sim card from a store in the city center.

In addition to this, we would argue that buying physical sim cards at all aren’t particularly convenient now that most people use esim compatible phones. If you are looking for the most convenient option, then buying an esim before you arrive or with the airport wifi is much easier and will save you having to queue up or communicate with staff.

If you must purchase a sim card at the airport in Spain then you will be in luck. All major international airports in Spain have stores selling sim cards. Despite the prices being higher than normal, the staff are knowledgable and will be able to get you set up with the correct sim card relatively quickly.

If you want to avoid the inflated sim card prices you’ll find at the airport and your phone isn’t esim compatible, then you’re going to need to head in to a store to buy your sim card.

I recommend visiting one of the official retail stores of the mobile internet operators such as Orange, Vodafone and Movistar. Your best option is to enter their names into Google Maps and find the branch closest to your hotel or accommodation. Typically the staff in the official stores in Spain are knowledgable and helpful which means you can ensure you’ll walk away with a functioning sim card.

Despite this, it’s always a good idea to check your internet is working before you leave the store by loading a Google search results page and your preferred social media app. You should also ensure you always bring your passport with you when purchasing a sim card in case they need to register it.

If you like to be prepared and would prefer to arrive in Spain with your sim card all sorted and your phone ready to connect to the internet immediately then you should look into purchasing a sim card online.

The first option is to buy your sim card in advance via SimOptions, which is a company that will prepare and ship a sim card directly to your door. It’s a reliable and effective service, but with the invention of eSims it’s becoming obsolete.

An eSim is a digital version of a traditional sim card and is most likely the future of connectivity for mobile devices. The convenience of no longer visiting a store, handing over your passport and purchasing a physical sim card is quickly making physical sim cards obsolete in favour of eSims.

We recommend Airalo’s eSim when travelling to Spain. The Airalo Spain eSim offers fast internet speeds, wide coverage and extremely competitive prices making it a far more compelling option than purchasing a physical sim card from any of the local sim card providers.

In order to get set up with an Airalo eSim , all you need to do is visit Airalo here and purchase the eSim online (the $11.50 USD plan is suitable for most travellers). Once you’ve purchased the sim card Airalo will email you instructions and a QR code. Following these instructions should take just a couple of minutes, then you’ll have a sim card in Spain without having to venture outside.

Our preferred eSim provider in Spain is Airalo . We used them, alongside a local sim card on another device, for our most recent trip to Spain and found the service to be equal to the local sim card but without the hassle of acquiring a sim card in a store.

Airalo’s Spain eSim uses the Movistar network to provide data and connect users to the internet. You can expect very good coverage and reliability with the Movistar networknetwork as they are amongst the best mobile internet operators in Spain.

For most travellers we recommend the 5GB data plan for $11.50 USD which is valid for 30 days. Some travellers may prefer a larger plan, whilst travellers visiting for just a couple of days may be fine with a smaller plan.

An alternative eSim provider we can recommend is Holafly.

Holafly’s eSim is a suitable option for travellers who require large amounts of data, such as digital nomads and people who work online while they travel. All of Holafly’s Spain eSims offer unlimited data.

Using an eSim is new for many travellers, however, the good news is it’s surprisingly easy to get set up – even for the technologically challenged!

Here’s a general guide on how to use an eSIM:

Check eSIM Compatibility: Ensure that your device supports eSIM functionality. Many newer smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, and other devices are eSIM compatible including all iPhones produced since 2018.

Obtain an eSIM: There are multiple ways to acquire an eSIM. You can purchase an eSIM online from a provider like Airalo (which we recommend) or directly from a mobile network operator. Some devices also allow you to scan a QR code provided by your carrier to download the eSIM profile.

Activate the eSIM: Your eSim provider will send you instructions to activate the sim. This will usually involve scanning a QR code, entering an activation code, or downloading the eSIM profile directly onto your device.

Set up the eSIM: Once activated, your device will guide you through the eSIM setup process. This typically involves selecting the eSIM as your preferred mobile plan, configuring settings like data roaming, and entering any necessary authentication details.

Visiting Spain soon? Make sure to know what to expect when it comes to purchasing a Spain SIM card . 

In this guide, we’ll explain where to buy a SIM card in Spain in person and online. We’ll also discuss prepaid SIM cards and eSIMs if your mobile supports them.

That said, if you’re traveling to other countries in Europe, you should be able to use the same SIM card because most SIM card providers also offer coverage in other European countries.

Before you read this guide, you may wonder if you need a SIM card in Spain. If you don’t mind not having Internet, you’ll likely find free Wifi in restaurants, shopping malls, and hotels.

That said, if you need data to get around, call an Uber, or translate Spanish – you may want to get a SIM card for your travels in Spain.

Note that your mobile phone provider may already offer Spain coverage if you’re European. If that’s the case, you won’t need a SIM card for your adventures in Spain.

Best SIM Cards In Spain

If you’re traveling in Spain, w e recommend using a SIM card from Movistar, Orange, Vodafone, or Airalo. (I’ll get back to Airalo later on, so keep reading to learn more!)

That said, if you’re planning on visiting other countries during your trip to Europe , you might want to make sure to pick an option that offers coverage in other European countries.

How To Buy A SIM Card In Spain

You can buy a Europe prepaid SIM card in person in some international airports, mobile provider stores, convenience stores, or online.

Usually, you can expect higher costs and low data offers at the airport, so we don’t recommend buying a SIM card at the airport.

That said, you won’t necessarily find SIM card shops in every airport, so it’s essential to keep this in mind. And, when you see a shop, you might also have limited options.

For this reason, I’d recommend buying a SIM card directly from the mobile provider store. Note that you may need your passport to buy one.

Although, this means you won’t get data right upon your arrival. So, if you prefer to be connected at all times, you could use an eSIM or purchase a European prepaid SIM card online.

Now, let’s take a look at the data plans offered by Movistar, Orange, and Vodafone.

Movistar SIM Cards

Movistar offers three different types of prepaid plans, all for 4 weeks:

• Prepaid plus: 40GB for EUR 10
• Prepaid Premium: 80GB for EUR 15 
• Total Prepaid: 140GB for EUR 20

As a visitor, the best option is probably the first plan, depending on the length of your trip.

You can buy the first SIM card online for EUR 10 for 4 weeks, and you’ll get the following:

• Unlimited minutes for Spain
• 200 international minutes

Orange SIM Cards

Orange has five different prepaid plans available:

• Holiday Pass 5: Unlimited data for EUR 15 for 5 days
• Holiday Pass 15: Unlimited data for EUR 25 for 15 days
• Go Walk: 10GB data for EUR 10 for 28 days
• Go Run: 20GB data for EUR 15 for 28 days
• Go Fly: 35GB data for EUR 20 for 28 days

If your trip is under 15 days, either of the first two options would definitely work best as you receive unlimited data.

Vodafone Spain SIM Cards

Vodafone offers five prepaid SIM card plans, all for 28 days:

• Prepago S: 12GB data for EUR 10
• Prepago M: 20GB data for EUR 15
• Prepago L: 35GB data for EUR 20
• Prepago XL: 45GB for EUR 30
• Prepago XXL: 55GB for EUR 40

Depending on the length of your trip, any of the first three options would work best.

Please note that the purchase process on Vodafone Spain’s website is currently only available in Spanish. Once this process is available in English, we will let you know.

How To Buy A Spain Prepaid SIM Card Online

If you wish to have your SIM card ready for your arrival, you could purchase it online or on websites like Amazon.

You’ll find different plans on Amazon. For example, the Orange Holiday Europe Prepaid SIM Card works in over 30 countries and gives you 20 GB of data for 14 days. Spain is included.

But there are many other options worth considering, so have a look and make sure the countries you’re planning on visiting are listed.

How To Buy An eSIM Card For Spain

eSIM is a new concept allowing you to have a virtual SIM card inside your phone. If your mobile phone supports eSIM cards – it’s definitely one of the best options to get data in Spain.

Alternatively, if you’re traveling in other countries that are not mentioned on the list, you can try Discover Global, which offers coverage in 87 countries, including Spain.

Now, one important thing to note about Airalo is that you’ll need to keep an eye out for the provider in each country.

Suppose you ever have trouble connecting to the Internet during your trip. In that case, it might be because you’re connecting automatically to networks and need to select a network manually instead.

When you purchase the eSIM, you’ll get access to the list of networks supported in each country.

As you can see, getting a prepaid SIM card in Spain or even an eSIM for your travels in Spain is pretty easy.

You’ll even be able to stay connected wherever you go in Europe without changing your SIM card, especially if you purchase a European SIM card .

I believe the eSIM card is the most convenient way to get data in Spain if you wish to have data upon your arrival. This way, you won’t need to go to a store to buy a SIM card.

Obviously, you need to make sure your mobile phone supports eSIM first.

Whether you’re using your phone to call an Uber, using the GPS function to navigate new places or to translate the menu at dinner, travel these days is made immeasurably easier by our phones.  Backpacking Spain will be so much easier if you stay connected.

Sure, your current sim card  might  work in Spain, but there’s far too much that can go awry. For a start, using your day-to-day sim outside of your home territory can rack up the charges at eyewatering speed. Pesky roaming charges and enormously inflated data can leave with you a nasty bill on your return. Not to mention that every time you receive a call, you’ll get charged for that too. 

Note that any other EU or even European sim will probably work seamlessly in Spain.

There’s also the unreliability of using your native sim in a foreign country. Truth is, coverage can drop at some inopportune moments, like when you’re utterly lost in Barcelona’s bustling neighbourhood and can’t find your hotel. 

Getting a local sim in Spain will save you these headaches and ensure you stay connected for the duration of your travels . Not to mention that oftentimes, hotel Wi-Fi can be slow and unreliable, so you don’t want to be reliant on it.

Buying a Sim Card for Spain – Things to Consider

Where to buy a sim card for spain, best sim card providers in spain, what is the best sim card in spain for tourists.

Choosing a sim local vs international sim card for Spain really comes down to what works best for your needs. Things like budget, coverage and other factors deserve consideration, and what suits you may not work for someone else. 

We’ve broken these down and explain them in more detail. 

Cost is a hugely important factor when choosing a sim card in Spain. No one wants to get ripped off, so it’s essential to find out which provider offers the most bang for your buck in terms of data and call charges. 

Like most things in life, it’s easier to get a deal when you’re buying big. Accordingly the trick is to buy a big enough bundle to save some bucks, without pointlessly buying minutes and data that you can’t realistically use! Typically, Spain is NOT expensive by European standards so you shouldn’t have yo pay too much.

This is where most providers will snag you. They’ll lure you in with low prices for small bundles that they know you’ll burn through in no time. You’ll then be forced to top up at a much higher rate, thereby costing you significantly more. Always check the costs for top-ups.

The best way to stay wise here is to get familiar with your average usage and then pad that figure generously as you’ll be using more data for things like maps and translation apps. 

Don’t take coverage for granted. Not all providers offer coverage in all areas, some specialize in a particular region in Spain only. Once you know precisely where you will be staying in Spain , Make sure to check this or risk being caught out without coverage. Research the area you’ll be visiting and ask about the best coverage for that area. 

Also, remember to ask about coverage issues or blind spots. This is usually common in very mountainous areas and islands. 

If you’re travelling to other EU countries on the same trip, purchasing a sim card in Spain often includes free data roaming in the EU. Be sure to check if it is capped or not as this isn’t always clear.  

5G coverage in Spain is pretty poor compared with other European countries. Some providers are a bit behind the curve and aren’t offering a robust coverage network for even 4G. Research where you’ll be travelling and ensure you won’t be left frustrated by snail’s-pace 3G.

Also bear in mind that whilst the Balearic and Canary Islands are Spanish territories, they are nowhere near the mainland. As such, a Sim Card that works very well in Madrid may not be much cop out on the distant dunes of Lanzarote!

Bureaucracy

In most places, getting a sim card is a fairly quick and easy process. You should be able to secure a sim without too much paperwork or having to provide too much information. 

Red tape is unfortunately unavoidable in some countries, but thankfully Spain isn’t one of them. If you were heading to Russia or Pakistan, it would be way more complex to get a sim. 

Don’t get caught out by an expiring sim card . Some sims come with a set lifespan or expiration date and after such time become totally useless. There’s no way to extend or update these which can be annoying if you’re caught out. 

While some sim cards can expire after 30 days or even 60 days, some will last indefinitely as long as you keep topping them up. 

A new country, a new contract, a new piece of plastic – booooring. Instead, buy an eSIM!

Buying a sim card in Spain should be a relatively painless process. Sims are available at international airports, book shops, and mobile internet provider stores, as well as gas stations and convenience stores. 

In the Airport

It’s tempting to purchase a sim card at the airport. Usually, the shop staff at airports speak good English and can help get you set up right away. Unfortunately, this comes at a higher price than other stores. 

At Barcelona Airport you can find a great Orange sim card for €20 in Terminal 1 and 2. It gives you 9 GB of data all over Europe and €5 calling credit.

In Madrid Airport (Terminal 4 only) you can buy an Orange sim card that will work in Spain and Europe for €25 with 10 GB data + €10 calling credit. 

Barcelona, Alicante, Malaga and Madrid offer a wide variety of sim card vendors, as do Ibiza and Mallorca. 

Some of the bigger gas stations and convenience stores will also sell sim cards, however, there won’t be much in the way of service and you’ll need to activate the sim yourself. 

If you’re hitting the stores, be aware that you may encounter some language barriers – try to learn some Spanish if you have time.. 

If you’d prefer to hit the ground running when you arrive in Spain and get straight to the business of enjoying your trip, you can always order a sim card for Spain online. Aside from being the easiest way to source a sim card for Spain, this way also allows you plenty of time to research and choose the best sim card for a trip to Spain. Whilst they don’t offer a specialised Greece sim card, they do have a different array of International Sim Cards that will work in many different countries including Spain.

This is a great option for regular travelers who visit a number of different countries or simply make repeat visits to the same country. Gigsky also offers a game chaning “Land + Sea” package making it one of the best sim options for cruise-goers.

Yoigo are a relatively young Spanish telecoms company so if you want to “buy local”, Yoigo is your boy. Their network is not as extensive as others and whilst it works perfectly well in cities, we did encounter a few black outs when on Road Trips and heading trekking in the Sierra Nevada’s .

Vodafone is always a safe bet with a vast array of packages available and a solid network of coverage in Spain. Packages include free EU roaming.

Buying a SIM Card or eSIM in Spain

Lying on the beaches of the Costa Brava, enjoying free tapas in a Granadian bar, exploring the art museums of Madrid or the boulevards of Barcelona. Spain is a large, varied and fascinating country, much loved by overseas visitors.

If you’re planning on staying connected during your time there (and can drag yourself away from the ocean, mountains, and vino tinto for long enough) the good news is it’s cheap and reasonably easy to get set up with one of the local cell companies.

Travel eSIMs, too, are inexpensive and even easier to buy and set up, letting you spend more of your holiday enjoying the sun instead of hunting out phone shops. However you choose to do it, here’s what you need to know about staying connected in Spain.

With four cellular providers and several resellers, Spain has plenty of prepaid SIM options. Vodafone has the best coverage throughout the country, but Mobistar and Orange aren’t far behind. Másmóvil is in last place.

You’ll find LTE anywhere you have service, and 5G is starting to show up in some of the larger cities and towns.

There aren’t huge differences in prices and bundles between the main providers, but there is some variation. Movistar is typically a little more expensive, while Vodafone and Orange often have good data promotions.

Need travel insurance for Spain?

We use HeyMondo thanks to its comprehensive coverage, the ability to buy or renew policies when traveling, and competitive prices. Residents of most countries get a discount with this link .

Of the resellers, Lycamobile and SimYo typically have somewhat cheaper pricing than the “big four,” but you’ll may have a look a little harder to find a store that’s selling their SIM cards.

You’ll also likely be on your own when it comes to activation and troubleshooting, so it’s your call as to whether that’s worth saving a few euros.

No matter which company you choose, though, 10-15 euros per month should get you plenty of calls, texts, and data.

Travel eSIM for Spain

Because you get vast amounts of data with almost all prepaid SIM plans (below), travel eSIMs only really make sense for those visiting Spain for a short period, or who only need a smallish amount of data.

If that’s you, you may find you actually save money (and definitely save time) with one of those eSIMs. Small packs of up to about 3GB cost less than a local SIM bundle, and while you get far more data with the latter, that only matters if you’ll actually use it!

I often find myself using travel eSIMs these days, especially for short stays in a country, for exactly that reason. Airalo and aloSIM tend to have the best pricing for Spain: aloSIM often has higher speeds, but you’ll be happy with either.

Like most travel eSIMs, it’s data-only: you don’t get a local number. I use apps for everything from communication to transport these days, so the lack of a local number very rarely matters to me, but you might have different needs.

One thing worth noting: if you’re planning to travel to several European countries within a few weeks, it might be worth looking at some of the regional eSIM packages on offer.

There are too many to list each one separately (and they change all the time), but as a starting point, these are the Europe eSIM options from companies I’d actually consider using:

• aloSIM (34 countries)
• Airalo (39 countries)
• Nomad (30-35 countries)
• SIMOptions (29-39 countries)
• yeSIM (31 countries)
• easySIM (36 countries – free with any single-country eSIM)

If you’re new to eSIMs, they offer big benefits to travelers in terms of how quickly, easily, and (often) cheaply you can get connected when you arrive in a new country. Most recent phones support them, and you can read all about them here .

How to Buy a Prepaid SIM Card in Spain

I’ve now bought Spanish SIM cards from the three biggest companies, in different parts of the country.

On my first visit, I bought a Vodafone SIM from the official store in downtown Granada on the second attempt, after being politely advised the first time they were about to close for siesta. Ahh, Spain.

There was a queuing system of some sort at work, with a machine spitting out tickets that everyone was ignoring. I had a friend with me who spoke Spanish, but suspect I would have got by even with my very limited language skills.

The staff member showed me a brochure with the various plans on offer, and I picked one. After handing over my passport, it was all set up within five minutes.

I’ve also purchased an Orange SIM from one of the smaller official stores in Madrid, and a Movistar SIM in Tui shortly after crossing over the border from Portugal.

In both of those cases, the process was equally quick. It took 5-10 minutes to work out which package I needed, then configure the new SIM. That included extra time for me to horribly mangle the Spanish language and generally confuse the process.

By law, Spanish SIM cards need to be registered. You won’t be able to buy one without a passport or national ID card.

Prepaid SIM and eSIM Costs

Vodafone has a range of prepaid packages available, and while it doesn’t seem to be selling its popular Tourist SIM at the moment, you’ll get similar value from the standard packs anyway.

At time of writing, 10€ buys you 300 minutes of national and selected international calls, along with 50GB of data. The package is valid for 28 days.

I’d honestly be pretty surprised if you needed more than that, but if you do, 15€ pushes the data up to 100GB (x2) with 800 minutes of international calls and unlimited national calls, while 20€ provides 140GB and unlimited calls.

If you stay in Spain for more than a month, unused data and calls will roll over to the next month when you renew. With all packs, you get a certain amount of free roaming in the EU, UK, and USA, albeit significantly less than the full allowance.

The SIM cards are free, but depending on where you buy them, you may be charged for activation on top of the above pricing. If it’s more than a few euros, find a different store!

If you go with Orange, SIM cards are free as long as you top up with a reasonable amount (usually 10 euros, sometimes a little more) at the time of purchase. Assuming you do so, you can then spend that credit on an appropriate package.

10€ gets you 50GB of data and unlimited domestic calls, and it’s 15€ for 75GB or 20€ for 150GB. EU roaming is included, although again with strict limits. Other Orange packages are also available .

As I say, aloSIM and Airalo tend to have the best (and often identical) prices for Spain, with the cheapest packs usually starting at under five bucks.

They’re not the only option, though: I’ve compared many eSIM companies in the past, and here’s how the best ones stack up price-wise in Spain.

There are several ways to top up, but you may find the easiest option is just to do it in-store when you see an Orange or Vodafone logo.

With Vodafone, other options include calling 22132, at ATM’s, online, or via the ‘Vodafone yu’ app. You may struggle to use any of them without having a debit or credit card issued in Spain, however.

It is possible to top up an Orange SIM using a foreign card, and you can do so directly from the website . My bank decided to block the transaction the first time I tried, mind you, but once we got that sorted out, the top-up went through fine.

As long as there’s enough credit loaded on your Orange SIM, your call/data/text package will automatically renew. If you want to renew ahead of time, top up and then dial *111# and follow the prompts, or send a text to 1470.

Coverage and Data Speeds

I’ve spent several months in Spain over the years, and coverage and speeds with both Vodafone and Orange have been generally very good. In major cities and towns, you should expect reliable service and fast LTE data speeds with either company.

I walked various Camino de Santiago routes for two months across much of northern Spain with an Orange SIM in my phone, and there was exactly one time when I wasn’t able to get service.

Even in rural areas and tiny villages, there was some sort of coverage available. 4G/LTE service was common, especially anywhere near a town or city.

Using a Vodafone SIM in Andalusia yielded similar results. In and around Granada, I rarely dropped below a full-strength signal anywhere outdoors, with LTE data everywhere I went.

It was faster and more reliable than the cable internet at my apartment, and I ended up using it for Skype and online conference calls quite regularly.

Even when hiking for a week between Granada and Cordoba, signal and data speeds remained solid almost everywhere. I also had very few coverage problems on buses or trains anywhere in the country with either Vodafone or Orange.

Spain is part of the European Union, so EU roaming regulations apply. These “roam like at home” rules ended roaming charges across much of Europe in 2017, letting you use a SIM card from any EU country across all the others at no extra charge.

There are some exceptions and limits, however, especially with large data packages. As I mentioned earlier, pretty much all of the data bundles have strict limits on how much you can use while roaming. Double-check the exact details at time of purchase.

Your Vodafone experience is the opposite of the deal in Goa, India where I’m staying now from the U.S. The 3G rarely works.

They take a copy of your passport, jump on a scooter to leave and say “come back in 3 days to activate my friend”, and even then getting data to work can take a few more days!

Vodaphone was a most terrible experience in Fiji. Used up our time sending us unsoliciated texts, phone calls from people we did not know and our data got used up without us doing it.

They were no help at the store and when we tried to change over to another provider, it seems they had locked any other Fiji provider out of our phone.

We return in a few months and we will most definitely NOT be repeat buyers.

We avoided them like the plague in Australia and will do so in Spain.

Plus I give them the finger.

Orange SIM in the Canaries Island of Fuenteventura. 10EUR (they have different VAT jere) got me a 1GB of data, usable for 30 day (I have a 3G MIFI so I don’t care about the talk/SMS part). Passport and about 10 minutes of “paperwork”. Got an SMS later saying I get 2GB, yey! Connection is mediocre at times, but better than nothing.

Can I buy a prepaid Vodafone sim card in the airport of Barcelona? my mobile phone is I phone 6, can it support? thanks.

I’m pretty sure you can, but if not, pick up a SIM from Orange instead — I remember seeing that store in BCN airport, and prices are similar. It’ll work in your iPhone 6 just fine, as long as it’s not carrier locked (ask your phone company if you’re not sure about that).

I am on a tourist visit to spain for 10 to 12 days between this I will b on cruise which will touch the italy and france so I need a sim which can work fluently. Please suggest the better option. Should I buy a matrix services or buy any services like matrix in India. please suggest cost effective better connectivity solution.

I’ve no idea what a matrix service is, but given that all EU phone operators now have to offer inexpensive roaming services to other EU companies, I’d suggest just buying a Spanish SIM card from Vodafone or Orange, putting a little extra credit on it to cover you for the time you’ll be in France and Italy, and using roaming. Tell the person at the Vodafone/Orange store what you want to do, and they’ll be able to give you an idea of how much extra it will cost.

we have the same situation. Can you advise if you find the answer …. a couple of weks in spain (mid april then mid may), with a cruise in the mediterranean.

You don’t say where in the Med you’re going. If it’s mainly between EU countries, there’s now free roaming between them all ( with a few exceptions ), so you’ll likely be best served by buying a Spanish Orange or Vodafone SIM as mentioned above for the couple of weeks you’re there, and then using it when in/near other EU countries during your cruise. As with any non-satellite-based system, you’ll need to be close to land (ie, within range of a land-based cellular tower) to get service.

I’m going to Spain next month for about a week. Planning to buy an unlocked GSM phone before I leave (not sure which one). If I buy a prepaid Orange or Vodaphone SIM Card while in Spain, will it come with a Spanish phone number? Most of my calls will be to/from family in the U.S. Will I be able to call them and will I be charged for incoming calls from them? I am new to this and not particularly tech savy. If I buy the SIM at the Madrid airport what is the chance that someone at their store will speak English and help me get my phone working? Thanks for any advice

Yep, any prepaid Orange or Vodafone SIM in Spain will come with a local number (well, unless it’s a data SIM, when it may not have a number assigned). You’ll be able to call US numbers, and they’ll be able to call you. You won’t be charged for the incoming call from them.

I haven’t bought a SIM at Madrid airport, so can’t comment specifically on the amount of English spoken at the kiosks there, but it seems like one of the more likely places you’d find some degree of English spoken. I also found that one of the staff members at the Orange store in Puerta del Sol spoke reasonable English, if you don’t have any luck at the airport.

Hello Canadian retiree flying into Barcelona and torn travelling up to the edge of France to walk the Camino. Not very tech savvy ..taking my Galaxy phone for taking pictures, listening to tunes, texting, and the other stuff.. Will someone help to install a SIM card ….and I will need to purchase a two month plan. When my SIM card is taken out of my phone, I will still have pictures, tunes that I have downloaded ????

When I walked the Camino last year (from SJPdP), I also used a Spanish SIM card, from Orange, that I’d bought in Madrid. I just put enough money on it to cover the data plan I wanted for two months, plus a few calls and texts, and it automatically renewed once the first month was up.

You should have no problem finding an Orange store in Barcelona, and I’m sure the person behind the counter will install the SIM for you if you ask. You’ll still have all your photos, music etc, regardless of which SIM you’re using. Buen Camino!

Either of the two companies mentioned in this article will be fine, but feel free to check their sites for the latest international calling rates to see if there’s a marked difference for the countries you want to call.

I don’t, I’m afraid — I just ran the text messages through Google Translate as needed. That said, it might be worth stopping by an Orange store and asking if it’s possible. They’ll be able to do it for you if so.

It looks like there are at least a couple of Vodafone stores in the San Sebastian downtown area. I have no idea if the staff speak English, I’m afraid, but I’ve always been able to buy SIM cards in Spain even with my (very) bad Spanish.

We are going to Spain and Portugal early next year for 2 weeks and will be driving around with a rental card that will equip with a GBP. So I am thinking I should have a Spain SIM card when we are not in the car. We won’t be making local or international calls as we can do that back in the hotel on SKYPE or Whatsapp. So the Sim card is more for Data i.e. google map. So what will you suggest? Our first stop is Madrid.

Hi Kathryn, There’s so little difference between Orange and Vodafone for most travellers that it doesn’t matter which one you choose. Take a look at their respective sites (or just ask instore/look at the brochures) and pick a package that has enough data for your needs.

Unless you’re heavy users, 1GB or so should be enough for two weeks, but it may cost very little extra to get more. If a data SIM is noticeably cheaper, get it, but otherwise there’s no harm in being able to call and text with a normal SIM if you find you need to. Just don’t pay extra for a package with loads of calls and texts included.

I’ve been into a couple of Orange stores in Madrid — the one in the heart of the city (Puerta del Sol) is where you’re most likely to find someone who speaks English if you need that. The other one I went to required my best (bad) Spanish and advanced charades skills. 🙂

We will be in Spain for 2 months early 2017. I have my own Mifi2 Novatel. I will need to call in Canada and USA, with a Orange Sim Card, on my Mifi, will I be able to call to Canada and USA while my cell phone is connected to the Mifi????? Thank you

Via Skype or any other Voice over IP (VoIP) app, yes, but not by making a normal call from your phone.

This is extremely helpful for my upcoming trip to Andalusia, starting in Seville. I need a plan for three weeks in the big cities and the white villages. Most of the data usage will be for walking tours with Google Maps. Will a plan like yours work for me? Would I need to communicate in Spanish once the sim is installed? I had mixed experience with T-Mobile’ s free international roaming. Could be very slow, especially outside the cities. Once the internet connection was lost, and remained so through the trip. I want to play it safe in Spain this time, and the cost seems very reasonable.

That plan or something similar should work well for you, and there’s no need to communicate in Spanish after the SIM is installed unless you’re topping up or changing plans.

Great. After activating that sim card, do the phone’s (mine’s an android) APN settings need to be entered manually? I had to do that with a sim card bought in Canada.

I don’t recall manually entering APN settings with this SIM, so either it didn’t need them, or it was done by the staff member as part of the setup process.

Hello Thanks for the useful information. I’m travelling soon to Seville from the UK and would like a data only SIM (any network but Vodafone preferred). I’m going with a group so won’t have time to stop by the Vodafone shop at the airport so would like to get a SIM (the Vodafone Tourist tarrif or the Superyuser tariff you mention) in advance of my trip. Any comments on the best way to do this? As it is for a tablet, not a phone, I won’t be able to activate via SMS which the ones on the usual auction site seem to require. Thank you for your time.

It’s not something I’ve had to do, unfortunately — I’ve always just walked into a store in whichever city I arrive at. Unless you know someone in Spain who can do this for you and then post you the activated SIM, it may be difficult. If you’re with 3 in the UK, you get free roaming in Spain. Failing that, you may need to look at other international roaming options, at least until you can make the time to head to a mobile store or kiosk in Spain. Sorry I can’t be more help than that.

Just to let you know. There is now a company in Spain that rents Wifi hotspots, and prepaid data SIM cards, specifically to tourists and non-Spanish residents, that don’t require any contract. Traffic options goes from 1GB to unlimited. They are called Spain Internet, and you can find them at https://www.spaininternet.com They deliver to the hostel or it can be picked-up at the airport.

That site doesn’t exist — I guess you mean http://spaininternet.net ? There’s quite a few companies like this, in Spain and elsewhere, but I don’t typically mention them unless their prices are particularly competitive. At €29 for a week or €50.50 for two weeks, they don’t really fall into that category. 🙂 Still, for short trips, or if the convenience overrides the cost, they might be worth a look.

Just an FYI… I bought a Vodafone hotspot in Spain this spring to use w/ my iPod Touch and my wife’s tablet. 29 euro which included 1.5 gig of data. Pretty good deal actually except for one thing. I bought it to use 2 weeks in Spain and 2 weeks in Portugal and was told by Vodafone that that wouldn’t be a problem, we’d just be on roaming in Portugal and would use data a little faster. Turns out that was not correct. It worked great in Spain but not at all in Portugal. No roaming available. Then, when I went to Vodafone in Portugal to buy a Portuguese sim they told me the device was locked to Vodafone Spain, that they couldn’t unlock it (they’re separate companies), and that I couldn’t use anything but a Spanish sim in it so I was out of luck. Oh well… just lived off free wifi from hotels, coffee shops, etc until we got back to Spain. As much as I love my iTouch, next trip I’ll leave it at home and bring an unlocked gsm phone. I’m looking at a Motorola Moto Play or G4. What do you think?

Thanks for the info, Kevin! I’m surprised the Spanish Vodafone hotspots aren’t automatically enabled for EU roaming. Sounds like the sales rep would have been surprised too! It could have been a glitch, I guess, but it’s a pain in the butt when you’d planned to rely on it in Portugal. 🙁

Good choice on either the Moto Play Z or G4. The G4 is actually my pick for a budget smartphone for travel , and the two-day battery life on the Play Z is pretty damn handy on long travel days. 🙂

It’s definitely a shame the Nexus 7″ tablets have been discontinued, since they were the right mix of size, price and quality for travel. There’s sadly not much worth talking about in the 7″ range these days, especially with 3G/4G. Maybe consider going up to an 8″ tablet, and check out something like the Samsung Galaxy Tab E.

Just got my first cell phone, Andoird unlocked, I’m 65, going to Torremolinos next month. Plan to drive from Malaga to Javea and would like to have a phone for emergencies and call friend in Javea. Don’t plan to use phone otherwise. Suggestions?

I believe the Crystal Media store at Malaga airport sells SIM cards from the major cell companies — if you’re only using it for emergencies and the occasional call, just pick up the cheapest package available. If you can’t buy one at the airport, head to central Malaga before you start driving, as there are plenty of cell stores there who can sell you the same thing.

Can you recommend a sim card (unlocked Samsung Galaxie) for a 35 day stay on Costa Blanco that will give cheap calls back to Canada data and text messaging. Last year we were not able to get texts. Great site, thanks.

If you’re happy to use Skype Calling (cheap) or Google Voice (free) to make your calls to Canadian phone numbers, then any SIM card and package that comes with a reasonable amount of data will do the job. You’ll probably need to top it up just before the end of your stay, though, as most are monthly packages. If you want to call via the usual method, you’ll need to check with the various providers (Vodafone, Orange, Movistar, etc, plus the various resellers of their service like Lebara and Lycamobile) to see which one has the best calling rates to Canada — they change regularly, but the resellers are often most competitive.

I’ve always used an official store in Spain, just because they’re so easy to find in any decent-sized town or city, and the staff know all the details of current offers. I’ve used random phone stores, convenience stores, even a currency exchange place elsewhere in the world, though. It just depends on what’s around, and whether I’m buying a SIM for a major company, or a smaller service reseller that doesn’t necessarily operate its own stores.

Looking to buy a data only sim to use in my mifi TP-LINK M7350 for use in my apartment in Spain near Malaga, Fuengirola. Want data only as iphones can be routed through wifi for calls. Also for email and web browsing but most likely to connect up a Kodi app on a firestick to stream TV . Will only be there for 12-15 weeks a year on and off so ideally need a large 12-24GB SIM data only over 12 months. Seen that 3 did an offer of 24GB for 12 months last Christmas 2016 in the UK but i think the best you can get now is 12GB at £27.00 with the long 12 month expiry that i would like. Fibre not installed yet in the street in Spain and most neighbours seem to get a Vodaphone 4G router but you then go on contract for 12 months at 15 euros per month rising to 30 euros a month. My question is where can i get the best PAYG large capacity SIM – UK or SPAIN with which provider?

Unfortunately your needs are a bit out of scope for what we cover here, so I don’t have a specific answer for you. In my experience, though, you’ll get better high capacity data rates with the resellers (Lycamobile etc) than you do with the cellular providers. Whether you can get that on a long expiry plan, or switch to such a plan while you’re not in Spain, will vary based on the provider, so you’ll need to research that individually.

Kiri? Maybe you mean Siri – if so, yes, it will work whenever you have a data connection (cell or Wifi) anywhere in the world.

It really depends on how disciplined you are, and how much you’re paying for whatever international SIM you’d want to go with. If the cost isn’t completely unreasonable, you download maps for everywhere you plan to go and only use them offline, and are disciplined about leaving cell data turned off unless you really need to use it, an international SIM card might do the job for you at an acceptable price. Depending on how long you’re in each country for, though, you won’t pay much for local SIMs either, and you’d have more data to use, at the cost of a bit more effort to purchase them.

This page should help — it’s from the English-language section of the Orange site. At the moment, it’s 9 euros/month for 1GB of data, plus 12c/text and 20c per local call. If you run out of data before the package expires, you just renew it for another nine euros. If you’ll be using a bit of data, it’s a better option than the Ardilla package .

Movistar has the greatest coverage (and is more expensive), but Vodafone and Orange aren’t too far behind. I don’t know what coverage is like specifically in those mountains, but I had no problems getting service with my Orange SIM while walking the Camino de Santiago across northern Spain, including in some pretty rural areas at times.

Yep, you’d just add some extra credit when buying the Orange SIM and Ballena package, to cover texts and calls. You can always top up later if you run out. It’ll be an international call or text to your husband’s phone if he’s roaming with his Canadian SIM. Each provider has different costs for international calls and texts — you’ll need to check with whichever provider you decide to go with. Orange’s rates, for instance, are here . They’re quite expensive, so in general if you have data service, I’d be using something like Skype Calling (which can be to any phone number in the world) to keep the costs down.

Just a tip for Kevin M. – I had the same issue with Vodafone Greece, they told me I would be able to use my my SIM with no issues in Romania so I topped up my data the day before leaving. Low and behold, when I arrived I couldn’t use data so I messaged their facebook page “Vodafone Greece” (they seem to have one for every country). Within an hour they were able to help me change the APN so it worked in Romania. Their customer support was very helpful. You can certainly get a cheap phone in Bilbao or San Sebastian, and stick a local SIM card in it (as per this post). As for what phone options are available there, however, I’m afraid I can’t answer that — it’ll depend on what models the retailers are stocking. Alcatel is a popular brand in Spain, for instance, and typically inexpensive.

Vodafone offers a “tourist” SIM with talk and a good amount of data, but its website states it will automatically renew after 30 days. Orange has a similar offering, also with automatic renewal. Assuming I do not need service for more than 30 days, I assume I should avoid these offerings? I haven’t been able to find more information about how to avoid the automatic renewal.

If you pay in cash when you buy the SIM, the company has no way of charging you anything extra after 30 days. I imagine it’s meant more as a convenience than anything else — in other words, if you top up with extra credit beforehand, it’ll renew the package for another 30 days, rather than you losing service or having to do it manually.

Dave: We are traveling to Spain from USA. When I buy a SIM card in Madrid (from Vodaphone or Orange) for 10 day use, can I have an option to add that my USA mobile number automatically gets connected there? That way, my children can call us on our USA verizon number, and don’t need a spain or UK number to dial? Please advise. My wife and I are leaving next week. Typically, no. The only way I can think of to make that work is by porting your US phone number to Google Voice ahead of time, but there are other complications with that and I seriously doubt it’s worth the effort for a short trip. Just ask your kids to use Facebook / WhatsApp / Skype calling instead.

I bought two Voda tourist sims, 15EUR each, one for me and one for my daughter.

Some points to note: + we had to wait 1.5 hrs in the Voda shop but once we got served, it was quick and easy – they even installed the sims in the phones and checked they worked. + in southern France there is no Voda network, so you roam to another network. Make sure to have data roaming turned on if you still want internet. + there is NO sms on the Voda tourist sim. We were astonished about no ability to send sms. You can still receive sms on the Voda tourist sim.

Apart from that, it has worked well, and seems much better value than other offerings.

Yes you will. It was the first iPhone model to use a nano SIM, which is now the most common option. You’ll only get 3G speeds, but that’s typically fast enough anyway.

I wasn’t using a US credit card, but I just called the fraud hotline number on the back of my card, and asked if they’d blocked the transaction. When they said they had, I told them it was legitimate, and they whitelisted the company so I could try it again. It worked fine after that.

For some reason, I was not able to recharge using the Mi Orange app or on Mi Orange’s website when using US credit cards. I tried with both Chase-Visa and Citi-Mastercard. Both got rejected. I called the banks and was told that the banks that they did not block the transaction. Perhaps things have changed since Dave’s last top-off.

I happened to stumble upon another site ( https://topup.orange.com/ ) and was able to top off there without any issue using my US credit card. There were no fees with using the service. I purchased a 5 Euro top off, and was only charged for that amount. Hope this helps other readers.

Is there a reason why you recommend vodafone and orange and not movistar? It so happens that the best reception in the area where I will be is with movistar, so it makes sense to get their card, but just wondering why you don’t like them so much?

Also, on their site I see that the prepaid plans don’t include SMS texts, just minutes and data. Do you buy the SMS txts separately?

If you know you’ll get the best coverage with Movistar in the area you’re going to, by all means choose them. I’ve used a Movistar SIM in the past and it was fine, just more expensive than the competition. Orange and Vodafone have good enough coverage in the areas I’ve been that it makes sense for most people to use them and save a bit of money, but obviously they won’t be ideal for everyone.

I presume you just pay separately per text message, but you’ll want to check that at time of purchase.

For heavy data users it seem Simyo is the best deal currently in Spain. They operate on the Orange network.

The main players in your article really offer poor value for heavy data users especially compared to what you get in the UK!

Yeah, it’s often the case that the major providers don’t offer great deals for heavy data users, and for some reason, prices in Spain are noticeably higher in general than the UK.

Where did you buy the SIM from? I looked at Simyo as an option last time I was in Spain, but at the time at least, their SIMs were very difficult to find in stores. You generally had to order them to be sent out to a Spanish address ahead of time, which makes them a non-starter for most short-term visitors.

When writing these articles, there’s regularly a trade-off between the ease of buying the SIM for casual visitors who are in the country for a week or two and may not speak the language, and the best deals. For digital nomads and others who tend to stay in-country longer and have higher data needs, there are often cheaper alternatives in return for a bit/a lot of extra hassle in purchasing.

I spent 129 euros at Madrid airport of Barajas Adolfo Suarez for a SIM local datos (5 euros) plus REC. SIM LOCAL DA (124 euros) for 30 days of service. They guaranteed no limit for calls and 5GB data. I could not make calls at all and customer service only provided punctual solutions after complaining, but did not fix anything.

Question regarding “top ups”.

Let’s say I buy an Orange prepaid SIM card. I use up all the data that comes with it (15GB) in about 3 weeks. I know I can go online (I’ve found the website) and add funds to that phone number.

If I add the appropriate funds, does my SIM card automatically enroll in the same “plan”? For instance, the plan I bought had 15GB and cost 19.95Euros. So if I pay 19.95Euros into my top up, do I instantly/automatically renew my current plan? Or do I have to do something else?

When you run out of data, you’ll continue browsing at a slow, throttled speed until your plan expires. If there’s enough credit on your SIM at that point, the plan will automatically renew.

If you do want to renew before that, however, you can. After topping up, you send a text to 1470 specifying the plan you want to renew. Details are on this page (in Spanish). As an example, if you’re on the Go Walk plan, you could text “GB WALK” to get another 5GB for 9.95 euros.

I’ve updated the article to include this information (and updated the prices as well), as I’m sure others will find it useful.

I’ve purchased an prepaid card from Vodafone in Barcelona. This one is called Hazte Mega Yuser, 15 GB and i’ve paid €20. I don’t live in Spain, however visit frequently. I was told at the store that if I top up the card for say € 5 every 3 months, the card won’t expire however if I don’t use or top up the card at all it would expire in 6 months.? I am a little confused since it says on vodafone’s website that i must pay € 20 each month? What would you suggest I should do to keep the card from expiring? I will hardly use this card while I am not in Spain.

This approach is quite common around the world, but can definitely be confusing. Basically what they’re saying is that to keep using the same 15GB data bundle, you need to pay €20/month. If you stop paying, you won’t be able to use the SIM for calls/texts/data, but it’s still “active” — in other words, still ready to be used when you do start paying again.

If you don’t top up for three months, you’ll start being charged 50 euro cents per month. If you don’t top up for six months, the SIM card will be deactivated, and will no longer function. You’d need to visit a Vodafone store to get it working again (although most likely you’d need to get a new SIM card anyway.) You can find all the details here (in Spanish, but Google Translate does the job if needed!)

If you won’t be in Spain at least every few months, this page has details on how to top up so you can keep the SIM active, but many if not all of the options require you to either be in Spain or have a debit/credit card issued in Spain. :-/ There are several third-party services out there that say they allow you to top up a Spanish Vodafone number from overseas, but I don’t have first-hand experience of any of them to recommend one to you I’m afraid.

Hey Dave, I know it’s been a few years on this blog, but do you know anything about getting an esim setup before heading to Spain?

If you’re happy with data-only, probably the easiest way to do it is via an eSIM reseller like Airolo. A quick look at the options for Spain suggest it’s a bit, but not much, more expensive than buying a physical SIM locally — $18 USD for 10GB of data, for instance.

The advantage, of course, is that you can do it before you get on the plane or at the airport when you arrive. Activation and ongoing management is done via the company’s app, so it’s pretty straightforward.

I’ve also seen occasional mention in the last year of Orange offering a prepaid travel eSIM as well, but I’m struggling to find current information about it or exactly how it works for tourists.

• Open camera on your phone.
• Scan the QR code you see in your Airalo account.
• Name your eSIM (so you can remember what is what).
• Set your regular physical SIM as standard SIM, and your Airalo eSIM as the SIM for internet, and you’re done.

Manual installation

If you purchased your Airalo eSIM card on your phone , follow these steps.

• Click the Manual Installation button and you’ll see your SM-DP+Address and Activation Code . These are the 2 things you’ll need to install your new eSIM on your phone.
• Copy the SM-DP+Address first.
• Open the Settings app and tap on the Cellular option at the top of the screen.
• Look towards the center of the screen and tap the Add Cellular Plan button.
• Tap the Enter Details Manually button at the bottom of the screen.
• Paste the SM-DP+Address in the top line of the screen.
• Switch back to the Airalo app and copy the Activation Code and paste it into the second line.
• Leave the Confirmation Code blank and tap the Next button at the upper right-hand corner of the screen.
• Now, your phone will now walk you through the eSIM setup process. It will ask which of your SIMs you’d like to use for talk and text and which you’d like to use for data. You can change this at any time in the Cellular screen of the Settings app.
• You’re all set!

What happens when you reach your data limit?

Once data is used up, your internet connection stops until you top up your eSIM or buy another one.

Some providers offer rechargeable eSIM plans where your can add additional data, and or voice/text, and or extend validity period. If existing, you will have the top up option available after you purchase.

Before visiting Spain it’s wise to purchase an eSIM data plan for your phone because relying on your home plan’s international data option can be very costly—and the service typically isn’t even very good.

Your best option is to buy a prepaid Spain eSIM that’s designed to run on Spain’s local data networks. Luckily, these days, setting up a data plan on your phone is fairly easy.

In this guide, I’ll cover how to find the best eSIM for Spain so you have consistent high-speed mobile data without spending a lot of money.

Why Avoid Your Plan’s International Data Option?

Your current mobile service most likely has an international data plan option but they’re typically expensive and the service is often slow, inconsistent, and has limited data allowances.

One example is T-Mobile. Many of their plans come with free unlimited international data but you’re only guaranteed 2g data speeds… which will struggle to load Google Maps or even email.

Or there is the AT&T International Day Pass which costs an expensive $10/day. They also have their AT&T Passport plan which is a monthly plan that’s either $70/month for 2GB of data or $140/month for 6GB of data. And then they charge a crazy high overage of $30 per GB. This is basically robbery.

These “international data plans” are 5X+ as expensive as buying a Spanish eSIM data plan—for example, eSIM data plans from Orange or Holafly will cost you around $2-$3/day.

Comparing The Best eSIM Data Plans for Spain

Spain has four main mobile phone operators— Movistar , Vodafone , Orange , and Yoigo . Unfortunately, most of the data plans offered by these Spanish carriers are geared toward the locals so they’re only really good if you live in Spain (or if you’re visiting for at least a month). Furthermore, many providers don’t offer eSIM plans yet so it might not even be an option.

For tourists, the best option is to buy a prepaid Spain eSIM data plan that’s designed for short-term visitors. These plans are much more “tourist-friendly” because you don’t have to mess with long-term contacts, registration, etc.

For this guide, I’ll focus on these “tourist-friendly” eSIM plans.

Each eSIM data plan listed below will vary slightly so pay attention to the details of each plan —here are the main things to consider:

• Data Allowance: Most plans give you a set amount of mobile data (i.e. 5GB, 10GB, 30GB, etc.) but others give you unlimited data over a set amount of time (5 days, 15 days, 30 days, etc).
• Plan Length: eSIM data plans can be valid anywhere from about 5 days to 90 days. It depends on your plan so it’s something you’ll want to consider when picking a plan.

Bouygues is another major French telecommunications company and they’ve recently released their own prepaid eSIM data plan to compete with the popular Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan. I used a prepaid Bouygues SIM card on a previous trip to Europe so I’m glad they’re finally offering an eSIM.

There’s a lot to like about the Bouygues My European eSIM plan—especially since it comes standard with 30GB of data and unlimited calls/texts within Europe. I also like how this Bouygues eSIM plan is valid for 30 days so it’s a great option for longer trips.

If you need a ton of mobile data, consider the newly released  Orange Holiday Europe 50GB eSIM data plan  which is a beefed-up version of the Orange Holiday Europe eSIM. It has 50GB of data and it’s valid for 28 days (compared to 14 days with the Orange Holiday Europe plan). This eSIM also comes with many features you don’t find with other plans—including international voice calling and texts (it gives you an actual French phone number that works anywhere in Europe).

The Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan also allows you to use your phone as a mobile hotspot so you can put that extra data allowance to good use. Orange is also one of the largest mobile companies in Europe so you’ll always get great coverage and high data speeds.

For visitors to Spain, the Orange Holiday Europe eSIM is the best full-featured eSIM plan available because it comes with many features you don’t find with other plans—including international voice calling and texts (it gives you an actual French phone number that works anywhere in Europe). The Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan also allows you to use your phone as a mobile hotspot (again, this is not common on other plans).

With the Orange Holiday Europe eSIM, you’ll get 20 GB of data, but Orange sometimes runs a special where they give you an extra 10 GB. But even 20 GB should be plenty of data for most users. Orange is also one of the largest mobile companies in Europe so you’ll always get great coverage and high data speeds.

The potential downside to the Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan is that it’s only valid for 14 days once activated so it’s not great for longer visits (but you can always buy a second plan).

The Orange Holiday Zen eSIM is a scaled-down version of the Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan and it’s a good option for people traveling through Spain who don’t need a lot of data. It comes with 8GB of data and has fewer voice minutes and texts, otherwise, it’s the same as the Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan.

Most users will use more than 8GB of data while traveling for two weeks but light data users could easily use less than 8GB of data during a typical 10-14 day trip.

HOLAFLY SPAIN ESIM: STARTING AT $34.00

The new eSIM provider Holafly  is another great option for Spain visitors who want a little more flexibility because Holafly gives you unlimited data and their plans run from 5 to 90 days. However, Holafly may throttle your data if you use excessive data but shouldn’t be an issue with most typical data users.

Holafly sells both Spain-specific plans and Europe-wide data plans. Holafly isn’t an actual mobile carrier but they rent bandwidth from a local Spanish mobile provider (Movistar Spain) so you’re more likely to get less priority on the Wind Tre network during peak usage times.

Unlike other mobile companies, Holafly gives you unlimited data and a local phone number with 60 minutes of credit for making/receiving calls from European numbers. I also like how Holafly’s plans come in durations from 5 to 90 days—so you don’t have to over/underbuy for your particular trip.

Holafly doesn’t allow data tethering in most cases so you won’t be able to use your phone as a mobile hotspot.

I’ve already written multiple articles about using  smartphones and data plans in Europe  as well as tips for  buying SIM Cards For Visiting Europe  but below are some more helpful tips about using your phone in Spain.

GET A PORTABLE BATTERY CHARGER

Traveling with your phone will quickly drain your batteries so I highly recommend a portable battery. I use  Anker PowerCore 10000  because it’s tiny and affordable but there are multiple options.

TAKE STEPS TO LOWER YOUR MOBILE DATA USAGE

Data can be expensive and it’s extremely easy to unknowingly burn through a lot of data because many apps use data in the background. Facebook, email, Instagram, Snapchat… those all constantly use data throughout the day without you knowing it. That’s it’s important to know how to limit your data usage.

USE AIRPLANE MODE AND BLOCK DATA TO SPECIFIC APPS

I’ll put my phone in Airplane Mode because that disables all data (but GPS still works in Airplane Mode). You can also go into the settings and disable data access to each individual app. I’ll go in and turn every off except for things like Google Maps or others that I’ll use more frequently — this way when I turn off Airplane Mode only those apps that will use data. Then I’ll turn Airplane Mode back on when I’m done.

DOWNLOAD OFFLINE MAPS

Google Maps lets you download entire city maps so they can be used offline. As an added bonus, GPS doesn’t use data so offline Google Maps works fairly well (but not all functionality works). Here is a good  YouTube video  that explains everything.

Spain has four main mobile network providers that offer good services to locals and other people visiting this country. Right now there is a great competition among the first three providers: Movistar, Vodafone, and Orange. These three carriers have excellent plans and prices for their customers, but let’s see in detail what they offer:

Movistar – The Largest Mobile Network Provider in Spain

At this moment, Movistar is the biggest telecommunication company in the country. With 16.12 million subscribers, this mobile network provider was founded more than 20 years and it is owned by Telefonica, which is a multinational telecommunication company. Movistar not only offers mobile services but also landline, broadband and pay television (known as Movistar TV), so it is definitely one of the largest companies in the whole country.

This company operates under that name not only in Spain but also in several Latin American countries like Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Venezuela, and many other nations. However, Telefonica owns other brands like O2, which operates in other countries like the United Kingdom, Germany, and the Czech Republic.

Movistar offers different prepaid SIM cards for locals and tourist so they can make calls or send texts while they enjoy their journey. This Spanish company was previously known as Amena until Orange (formerly France Telecom) bought it in 2005. This brand was founded in November 2012 after Movistar launched Tuenti Movil and Orange released Amena. Both brands are also commercial brands of these companies especially aimed at teens and young clients.
