30 Trips to Take in Your 30s

You're older and wiser. Where to travel now that you've got your sh*t together? (Relatively-speaking, of course.) Here are 30 trips that deliver the perfect mix of excitement, intrigue, adventure, luxury, and most importantly—fun!—from an off-the-grid getaway in Alaska to a bucket-list safari in Africa. Start planning 'em for when we can travel again.

A Brooklyn-based writer and editor, Chelsea's work has appeared in Matador Network, The Huffington Post, the TripAdvisor blog, and more. When not planning her next trip, you'll usually find her drinking way too much iced coffee (always iced—she’s from New England) or bingeing a Netflix original series.

Cheap booze and world-class swells brought you to Costa Rica in your twenties. Now, experience some of the country’s more grown-up pleasures—namely, its jaw-dropping natural scenery, inspired cuisine, and wellness-focused attractions—at the adults-only Oxygen Jungle Villas . The boutique hotel is nestled within a plot of protected Costa Rican rainforest and perched above the Pacific Ocean, so you truly feel like you’re living in the wild. You’ll spend your days lounging in your Balinese-style villa, going on countless outdoor excursions (hiking, whale watching, scuba diving), and exploring the restaurants and storefronts of neighboring town Ojochal.

Lanserhof Tegernsee, Bavaria

Vacation days—and we mean real vacation days, sans work and family commitments—are hard to come by in your thirties. Which is why it’s important to truly relax, re-center, and recharge when you do get a few days to yourself. Enter the legendary Lanserhof Tegernsee detox resort in the Bavarian Alps. Here, spa-goers are retaught how to chew and sleep, forced to cut sugar and alcohol from their diets, and if the specialists deem it necessary, subjected to futuristic medical evaluations including sleep assessments. The amenities make up for the rigors of the program: we’re talking an 18-course golf course, a saltwater swimming pool, nightly classical music concerts, and a monastically beautiful setting (all glass and stone and embowered by the forest).

Stockholm, Sweden

Your thirties are all about cultivating a distinctive sense of taste and style. And in Stockholm, you’ll have world-class museums, galleries, design stores, and concept boutiques at your fingertips. A few must-stops: Sven Harrys-Art Museum , a slick art space that houses the private collection of collector Sven-Harry Karlsson; Malmstenbutiken , a storied Swedish brand known for its furniture and textile designs; and hotel At Six , a boutique high-rise with an art collection that includes big names like Sol Le Witt and Jaume Plensa.

Amalfi Coast

You’ve dreamt about Amalfi’s pastel-hued villages, cobbled streets, and cerulean waters for as long as you can remember. Now that you have disposable income to spend and (hopefully) more vacation days, it’s time to make those dreams a reality. Stay in Amalfi at the five-star  Hotel Santa Caterina , set in a 19th-century, liberty-style villa above the sea. When you’re not lounging by the private pool or the beach club, explore the town’s charming maze of narrow streets, whitewashed buildings, precipitous steps, and bustling piazza.

If you’re celebrating a big anniversary or birthday, there’s no better place to do so than Sri Lanka. The exotic island offers out-of-this-world Indian Ocean coastlines, lush tropical vegetation, elephant-filled national parks, and plenty of luxury resorts like the Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort , spread across a 21-acre former coconut plantation on the southernmost coast of Sri Lanka. Splurge on a private villa—which comes with a private plunge pool, expansive deck, butler pantry, tiled rainfall shower—and you may never want to leave your guest room. But we’d recommend peeling yourself away for at least a few hours to indulge in an authentic Ayurvedic treatment at the spa, learn the ropes of Sri Lankan cooking at Anatara’s popular Spice Spoons Cooking school, or take part in a traditional high-tea service.

With age comes wisdom—plus, an affinity for the finer things in life. And at Chile’s Vik Hotel , a design-forward retreat and wine spa located two hours from Santiago, in Chile’s Millahue Valley, you’ll find plenty of amenities that will appeal to your refined tastes. We’re talking a vino-centered spa, infinity pool, two restaurants, and high-design guest rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows, original artwork, and curvilinear furniture (an homage to the property’s undulating titanium rooftop). Want to get outside and take in some of that jaw-dropping scenery? There are seven horses on standby that can whisk you around the property’s vineyard.

There will come a time in your thirties when you just need to get away from it all (the job, the bills, the responsibilities) with a back-to-nature trip. And for this kind of escapist getaway, we’d recommend Alaska—a land of impenetrable forests, vast tundras, towering glaciers, and some of the world’s most awe-inspiring animals. To see the region’s wildlife up close and personal, hop on a guided glacier or wildlife walk with Salmon Berry Tours , where you might spot Dall sheep, mountain goats, and caribou as you explore the Chugach Mountains and Cook Inlet. Then it’s on to the Kenai Fjords National Park , the smallest national park in Alaska, to see The Harding Icefield (almost 714 square miles of ice up to a mile thick) and Resurrection Bay . Make your home base The Hotel Alyeska , a rustic mountain lodge with direct access to hiking and biking trails.

Seville, Spain

Spain is known for its 10 p.m. dinners and a go-all-night nightlife. But you don’t need the stamina you had in your twenties to have an unforgettable trip there in your thirties. Consider Seville, in the southern part of the country, where there are delicious tapas, afternoon siestas, cortados at sidewalk café, and the relaxed lifestyle emblematic of Spanish culture. Don’t miss a meal at the resplendent San Fernando Restaurante at the Hotel Alfonso XIII , where you’ll feast on Andalusian fare like Iberian pork cheek with paprika and garlic, and strolling around the 16th-century Alameda de Hercules , which has a fresh market, jazz bars, and al alfresco cafes. Bed down at the Hotel Hospes Las Casas del Rey de Baeza , an exquisite 18th-century townhouse, with sun-drenched courtyards and a rooftop terrace with a pool.

Shanghai, China

It can be easy to fall into a bit of a vacation rut in your thirties, returning to the same hotels and destinations over and over again. To rediscover your love of travel—and immerse yourself in an intoxicating foreign environment—pack your bags for Shanghai. The cosmopolitan city has it all: sleek skyscrapers, high-end shopping, innovative restaurants, and cultural landmarks, from the French Concession and Nanshi to the riverfront Bund. Check into The Puli Hotel and Spa , a serene urban hideaway with a central address in city’s Jing’An district and Zen vibe.

Douro Valley, Portugal

You did Lisbon and Porto in your twenties. Now, it’s time to see a different side of Portugal by spending some time in Douro Valley—a landscape of sun-drenched vineyards that blanket steep mountainsides, with the majestic Douro River as the centerpiece. Wine is at the heart of it all at the historic Six Senses , a 19th-century manor house restored for the 21st century by New York-based firm Clodagh Design. Guests can unwind with wine-focused treatments in the spa, attend wine tastings in the library, and sample regional varieties at the on-site restaurant. Take a break from your education in viniculture at the property’s magnificent infinity-edge pool, which looks out over the winding river.

Newfoundland

If you’ve been to Canada, chances are it wasn’t to Newfoundland. The sleepy Atlantic Canadian province doesn’t exactly have the uh, international appeal as cities like Montreal or Toronto. What it does have? Quaint fishing villages, arctic wildlife, jaw-droppingly beautiful national parks, and plenty of Maritime charm—all things you likely have more of an appreciation for now that’s you’re older. Start your adventure in the capital city of St. John’s, a colorful little town with steep streets, clapboard houses, and Irish pubs (hit up George Street for the city’s best), then hit the road in the direction of Fogo Island. The tiny, salt-tanged isle offers fewer than a dozen restaurants and cafés, but makes up for it with a burgeoning art scene and plenty of design-forward accommodations—like the 29-room Fogo Island Inn .

Sydney, Australia

Australia is the ultimate adventure playground, which is probably why so many twentysomethings flock there for their gap-years and study abroads. But there’s more to the country than surfing and off-road adventures—especially if you set your sights on Sydney. With its hip, lively neighborhoods, iconic harbor, top drawer dining, gorgeous beaches, and legendary coffee culture, the city offers all the excitement of a world-class city with all the relaxation of a beach break. Book a stay at the Park Hyatt Sydney , an 155-room sleep with minimalist rooms—the best of which feature dead-on views of the Opera House—a heated rooftop pool (ditto about those views), two waterfront restaurants, and a spa that incorporates ingredients sourced from the Blue Mountains.

You can do Hawaii on the cheap, but in our opinion The Aloha State is best experienced while traveling with deep pockets. (Hence why it’s a destination best visited in your thirties.) If you’re traveling with the kiddos, go to Maui—specifically, the glitzy, family-friendly enclave of Wailea; if not, there’s no better place than Kauai to escape from real life and lose yourself in the beauty and serenity of your tropical surroundings. For the ultimate in luxury accommodations, bed down at the St. Regis Princeville , perched on a cliff overlooking Hanalei Bay and the famous Na Pali Coast and featuring an 11,000-square-foot spa and a Jean-Georges Vongerichten restaurant.

You did the superstar cities in your twenties: New York, Paris, London, Tokyo. Now that you’re a little older, you don’t have the same patience to put up with all that big city living entails—crowds, traffic, pollution, and all. But in Vancouver, British Columbia, you’ll get the big city feels without any of the inconvenience (or headache). That’s because the West Coast locale is consistently rated as being one of the most livable cities in the world, thanks to its abundance of parks, ease in getting around, laidback Californian-esque vibe, and thriving creative scene. The city’s ever-evolving culinary scene means there’s a cool, global-inspired restaurant to check out on almost every corner. Our faves? Torafuku , a pan-Asian restaurant with a clean, stripped-down aesthetic and to-die-for bites (like the “Rye So Messy” chicken wings, marinated in gochukang (a Korean fermented condiment), and Vij’s , an buzzy Indian restaurant that has played host to everyone from ex-Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau to Harrison Ford.

This under-the-radar Middle Eastern country is one for your bucket list. Boasting Hawaiian-style tropical beaches, deserts dotted with mirage-like swimming wadise, and the soaring, 10,000-foot peaks of Al-Jabal Al-Akhdar mountain range, it’s home to stunningly beautiful terrain—and a crop of new luxury resorts that put the scenery front and center. We love the Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort , built on the edge of the rocky Saiq Plateau and one of the best cliffside hotels in the world (in our opinion). When not taking a dip or chowing down on Omani and international cuisine at own of the resort’s six restaurants, head to the spa for decadent treatments, to the kitchen for a cooking class, or to the Hajar mountain range for a heart-pumping climb.

New Orleans, Louisiana

Sure, you might have already been to NOLA on a long gone spring break or with a rowdy bachelor or bachelorette party, but we’re suggesting this trip extend beyond Bourbon Street’s 13 blocks. Taking a more grown up approach to the southern city first means skipping over the budget-friendly but less than chic accommodations you went for in your younger years (see: La Quintas and Best Westerns) in favor of the Ace Hotel New Orleans —a buzzed-about Arts District boutique with retro-inspired furniture, a two-story music venue, and onsite restaurant helmed by James Beard-nominated chefs.

Save those overpriced luxury spa packages for when you’re 50, and opt for something a bit more adventurous. We’re well aware of this geothermal spring’s popularity with tourists, but it’s a must-do nonetheless. Famed for its turquoise-colored waters, it’s pooled within a lava-field basin rich in minerals like silica and sulfur. Expect to step out of the natural hot tub feeling fully pruned and pampered.

While you’re in town, tuck away at the The Nines, a Luxury Collection Hotel . By now you’ve likely been to heavy-hitting Euro destinations like England, France, Germany, and Italy, but have you ever ventured out east? Oft-overlooked by study abroad programs and the slapped-together backpacking itineraries that defined our twenties travel, Croatia is a feast for the eyes—from the early renaissance architecture and romantic alleys in Dubrovnik, to the seductive, glittering coasts of Vis, Hvar, Split, and Korcula. Start your getaway in Dubrovnik (it’s walled-in Old Town doubled as King’s Landing in HBO’s Game of Thrones ), avoiding crowds by checking into Villa Argentina , a cliffside dame overlooking the Adriatic.

NYC is an everyman’s destination—what with trendy restaurants, buzzed-about bars, game-changing Broadway shows, unparalleled art and history museums, and every type of stay. Though dive bars and bottomless brunches in Williamsburg and the LES will always have our hearts (having played host to many a quarter-life-crisis chat with friends), once life sorts itself out, weekends are for culture kicks. Hit Manhattan’s Museum Mile and knockout exhibitions at The Guggenheim , The Jewish Museum , The Neue Galerie , and The Met —but don’t forget about uptown and downtown options like the MoMA or Whitney either.

First-timer trips to France usually consist of the iconic sites in Paris, but once you’ve covered that, it’s time to head south to the sprawling Loire Valley. Just a 2-hour ride out of the city, the vineyard-cloaked Valley lures travelers with rolling countryside, opulent feudal chateaux, and teensy, tiny cafés serving up the best in regional French specialties. Splash out on a sexy rental car (a convertible, preferably), and set out on a self-guided tour of the region’s cathedrals and castles; the Château de Meung sur Loire , Château de Villandry , Chateau de Chenonceau , and Chartres Cathedral are among our top picks.

The Budapest jaunts of your younger years may have leaned heavily on nights spent at romkocsma aka “ruin bars”—derelict buildings that have been transformed into all-but-secret clubs—but round two, ditch the drinks and plan for pampering. As the City of Spas, Hungary’s capital has plenty of R&R options. Go for a mineral-enriched dip at the Széchenyi Thermal Bath , a massive, circa-1913 Neo-baroque-style complex with 21 pools. You’ll likely find yourself shoulder-to-shoulder with locals and other visitors, but the OG baths are popular for a reason.

Where to Go in November: 8 Great Destinations We Love

9 Group Travel Companies For Millennials That You Should Have On Your Radar

trips for 20 30 year olds

It's not a secret that millennials love to travel . Whether it's for the Instagram fame, a chance to party, or just the genuine life experience of being in a new place and culture, it's true. In fact, according to research done by Contiki in 2018, the majority of millennials would give up sex for awhile in order to travel the world . Yeah, told you we love to travel! Most millennials in the study were also legitimately willing to temporarily give up Netflix, booze, and coffee in exchange for travel, too, and that's saying a lot. I mean... coffee?

But another interesting quirk in the millennial travel game is our apparent penchant for more adventure-based trips. Many young travelers reportedly opt for hostels or vacation rentals over hotels, making for a more authentic experience, and they are also more likely to seek off-the-beaten-path experiences.

Another thing millennial travelers are into? Group trips. "One of the latest trends in travel is the guided small-group excursion, tailored to give a pack of like-minded young people an immersive experience in a destination," explained Newsday . Group travel packages have a reputation for catering toward an older crowd, featuring trips that check off the boxes of every predictable touristy destination in town. But due to their interest in travel and the difficulty involved in aligning schedules and budgets with a group of friends, millennials have embraced and revitalized the group-of-solo-travelers trend, resulting in a surge of travel companies catering to this generation and organizing international trips specifically for young people.

Check out some of the travel companies for millennials that are curating epic, unique, and adventurous trips for groups of young solo travelers — and start saving up that PTO for a trip of your own.

Contiki (the company behind the sex/Netflix/booze/coffee stats above) curates worldwide trips exclusively for 18-35 year olds. Their motto is "travel with no regrets," which we can get behind — and they offer hundreds of different trips to destinations on nearly every continent. They also have a student discount available, for all you millennial scholars out there.

For The Love Of Travel

For The Love Of Travel is a boutique travel company that offers unique curated group trips for people ages 25-39. "[W]e embrace the idea of 'slow travel,'" the company explained on its site. "That is, having an authentic cultural experience that connects us with the soul of the destination and people we can relate to." Check out their incredible selection of experiences .

Under 30 Experiences

Under 30 Experiences is an adventure travel company aimed toward solo travelers who are — you guessed it — under the age of 30 (with a minimum travel age of 21). But they're not too strict about it: Most guests are apparently between 21-35, and the company says they usually serve "professionals, creative types, ambitious students, entrepreneurs, and motivated young people just figuring it out."

Aimed exclusively at young professionals, Travendly is a group travel company that thoughtfully puts together tribes of like-minded young people (usually in their mid-twenties to late thirties) for ultimate travel enjoyment. With more than a dozen curated trips to countries around the globe , there's something for everyone.

G Adventures' 18-To-Thirtysomethings

The collection of 18-To-Thirtysomethings tours offered by travel company G Adventures are described as"fast-paced and affordable adventures designed for young travellers." Their goal is to create exciting, adventure-based trips that young solo travelers can actually afford, so check out their offerings of trips to destinations around the world .

Travel company Topdeck organizes trips for 18 to 30-something year olds, and the company's passion is to "inspire young people through life-changing travel experiences." The group trips are made specifically for solo travelers who are looking for fun and adventures, and they offer trips all around Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Australia.

Group travel company Flash Pack curates unique and stylish trips for anyone in the millennial age bracket. Their trips are designed for solo travelers in their late 20s through 40s who are looking for an actually authentic and adventurous experience, and they specialize in high-quality, flexible, boutique accommodations.

Intrepid's 18 To 29s Adventures

This is for those of us on the younger side of the Millennial canon. Formerly known as Gecko, the 18 To 29s Adventures offered by group tour & travel company Intrepid . While they are strict with the age range, these tours are specially designed to be suited to young travelers and focus on local adventures, making their trips sustainability-minded.

EF Ultimate Break

Travel company EF Ultimate Break offers more than 65 different trips made for every travel style, and cater to solo travelers who are ages 18 to 29 for group trips. Unlike many other companies, flight costs are built into its trips, so once you pay (or get on a payment plan) you'll be all set to go, making it super easy for busy millennials.

20 Places to Travel in Your 20s

Whether you're trying to find yourself or just experiencing a healthy dose of wanderlust, get inspired by some of the best places to travel in your 20s.

trips for 20 30 year olds

Your 20s are for rich dishes, late nights, and lazy, hazy mornings after. Sure, you could do all of this in the city or town you’ve chosen to spend your early adulthood. Or , you could do it on the beach in Tel Aviv.

There’s nothing like traveling in your 20s. You’ve got a good amount of freedom and flexibility in your schedule, and (hopefully) the financial support of your first “real world” job. And as someone who’s stepping out into the world for the first time, you probably need a good point in the right direction.

Here, we've compiled a list of trips that every 20-something should consider taking, from the eye-rollingly obvious to the off-the-beaten-path obscure. We based our selections on factors of safety and accessibility, as well as on personal experiences and input from well-seasoned travelers. Some of these destinations are better suited for slow travel over the course of weeks or even months — they're best experienced in between life phases, jobs, or semesters of college — while others can be conquered in a long weekend.

Consider this your new travel mood board. We’re taking you from New Zealand for skydiving to Peru for its cevicherias to Goa for all the spicy foods. This list is a source of wanderlust that may spark your curiosity about a part of the world you've never considered before.

From street tacos in Mexico City to volcanic springs in Iceland to classic cocktails in Louisiana, these experiences are perfect for any 20-something’s next trip.

Go Backpacking in Southeast Asia

From Thailand to the Philippines , Southeast Asia has some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. And one of the best ways to see these sights is on your own two feet. Southeast Asia is incredibly welcoming, particularly for young backpackers.

Activities here are plentiful, from breathtaking volcano hikes in Bali to world-class scuba diving in Malaysia . Explore small villages like Pai, Thailand, or crazy, sprawling cities such as Bangkok — and almost everything in between. Make time for dragon boat rides in Vietnam, temples in Cambodia, and an awe-inspiring UNESCO World Heritage Site in Myanmar (the ancient city of Bagan).

For English speakers, the language barrier is better than in other common backpacker circuits like South America or even Western Europe. And while flights to and from may be on the pricier side, once you arrive, you can live like a king for a fraction of the cost of a single night out in New York City. It’s also easy to country-hop on budget airlines for shockingly low fares.

Drink the Original Cocktail in New Orleans

Denny Culbert

Legal drinkers, here's a place that appreciates your newfound pastime as much as you do.

For a city with international appeal without having to renew your passport , head down to the Big Easy for culture, cocktails, and Cajun cuisine. Laissez les bons temps rouler in the city known as the birthplace of the first cocktail (the Sazerac, if you don’t know — you can order one at the Carousel Bar  in Hotel Monteleone). You'll certainly have your fill of hurricanes, French 75s, Ramos Gin Fizzes, vieux carrés, Pimm's Cups, brandy milk punches, and daiquiris (did we mention the city is known for its mixed drinks?).

Bar hop on Bourbon Street before a late-night, live jazz session at Preservation Hall , then recover with coffee and beignets at Café Du Monde the next day. Even beyond parades and Mardi Gras, New Orleans ’ laidback energy and out-of-this-world food mean it’s a good time all year long .

Explore Tokyo's Many Neighborhoods

yongyuan/Getty Images

Tokyo could be called the city with 1,000 faces because, in addition to being the most populated city in the world, it’s an eclectic blend of past, present, and future with a variety of unique neighborhoods. Spend the day sampling ramen and touring ancient temples before bellying up to a bar for genuine Japanese whisky and Michelin-starred cuisine.

The extensive train system makes Tokyo easy to navigate (as long as you don’t get lost — Google Maps is a necessity for any first-time tourists!), and you’ll want to take advantage when exploring the city’s various neighborhoods, like Shibuya and Shinjuku. Eat your way through the sushi and seafood in Tsukiji Market , or head to the Land of the Rising Sun in the springtime to experience the famous cherry blossom trees in Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden.

Eat Your Heart Out in Mexico City

Stephanie Pollak/Travel + Leisure

Come for the gorgeous weather and stunning architecture, stay for the tacos al pastor. Mexico City  is one of the most walkable, culturally stimulating, and refreshingly cosmopolitan cities in the world. And it’s a foodie’s dream, with cheap, delicious street food options around every corner. Think tamales, elotes, chicharrónes, churros, agua frescas, and, obviously, tacos, tacos, tacos. Maybe you're even daring enough for chapulines: the Mexican delicacy of roasted grasshoppers seasoned in chili powder and lime.

The city is also home to attractions like the Frida Kahlo Museum and the giant city park, Bosque de Chapultepec. Either the Condesa, Roma Norte, or Polanco neighborhoods make a great home base for your stay. There’s a lively nightlife scene spread throughout Mexico City, as well as tequila and mezcal tastings that easily count as “cultural exploration.”

Take a Food Tour in Peru

Getting a selfie at Macchu Pichu isn’t the only reason to head to Peru . Peruvian cuisine is known throughout the world as some of the best — and healthiest — on the planet.

You haven't tasted ceviche until you’ve been to one (or more) of Lima ’s cevicherias. Whether you embark on an organized food tour or simply hop from hole-in-the-wall joint to five-star restaurant, it’s hard to go wrong with any meal choice. And it’s not just fresh fish: Even self-declared carnivores will find the quinoa in this country delectable.

Tango in Buenos Aires

Lauren Breedlove/Travel + Leisure

Buenos Aires is a 20-something's paradise — and not just because of the astonishing selection of affordable Malbecs. Neighborhood hopping around Buenos Aires, from Palermo Soho to Recoleta to downtown, is an ideal way to explore the city’s multifaceted offerings.

Go on a street art tour. Visit the San Telmo market. Buy yourself a mate gourd, learn how to drink the traditional tea properly, and hang out in the park to people watch. Eat dinner at 10 p.m. like a true Argentinian, and then stay out on the town dancing until sunrise on a Saturday. Or a Tuesday.

If you can swing it, take a flight down to Patagonia and gape in slack-jawed wonder at some of the most stunning natural landscapes in the world.

Get Sporty in New Zealand

New Zealand isn’t the easiest or cheapest destination to reach, but it’s an adrenaline enthusiast's dream. Both Auckland and Queenstown have emerged as a popular travel destinations for young people.

Whatever your thrill-seeking heart desires, New Zealand offers it bigger and better than most: Bungee jumping, sky diving, sea kayaking, or wildlife hikes are only a few of the adventurous activities available in the land of the Kiwis.

And not to mention, New Zealand is almost painfully beautiful. It has everything from mountains to rainforests to tropical beaches. We’re talking about a part of the world where the Lord of the Rings trilogy was filmed, so you know the scenery is eye-poppingly epic at pretty much every turn.

Explore Israel on Your Own Two Feet

Roman Krykh / EyeEm/Getty Images

Whether you’re winding through the old streets of Jaffa, soaking up the lively culture of Tel Aviv, or floating in the Dead Sea, Israel provides an experience like no other. The entirety of Israel is approximately the size of New Jersey, which makes it easy to explore from top to bottom.

To the north, luscious waterfalls cascade through a verdant landscape. In the South, huge craters in the desert give off the appearance of an otherworldly planet. Here, camping and stargazing are prime summertime activities. There’s also an extensive  hiking trail  that spans the entire country, which may appeal to the more adventurous traveler.

Get Away From the Crowds in Portugal

The capital city of Lisbon looks exactly like what you imagine when you think of quintessential romantic European getaways: narrow cobbled streets, stunning architecture, and fresh, authentic cuisine that holds true to its cultural roots. Although the city has no shortage of charms to capture your attention, travelers in the know won’t regret renting a car and heading out of town to explore the less-frequented parts of Portugal .

The northern region of the country is an unexpected delight and an ideal location for outdoorsy activities. Porto, famous for port wine, is easily worth a visit, and to the southwest, beaches and national parks provide optimal sunset-watching opportunities. Backpackers will find the party in Lagos, while couples seeking quieter surroundings will find the region just outside of Lagos dotted with romantic bed-and-breakfasts.

The Madeira Islands are another hidden gem in the Atlantic full of gorgeous beaches, cable cars, and (what else?) flowing Madeira wine.

Ride a Bike Through Amsterdam

Michela Sieman/Travel + Leisure

Sure, Amsterdam has a bit of a reputation to uphold, but there’s more to this city than its famous coffee shops.

First and foremost, Amsterdam seems to contain more bikes per square meter than it does people. It’s one of the most bike-friendly cities in the world, and exploring via two wheels opens up a world of possibilities for tourists. There’s art, culture, food, and music galore, and a quick conversation with a local will point you in the direction of a spot to hang for whatever floats your boat.

In the warmer months, travelers will want to visit the beautiful parks smattered throughout the massive city, including Vondelpark , the largest and arguably most famous park in all the Netherlands.

Navigate the Colorful Sites of Morocco

Morocco  is a once-in-a-lifetime destination with sweeping, cinematic sights, delicious cuisine, and an energy all its own. If there’s one word for this country, it’s vibrant: vibrant culture, vibrant flavors, vibrant markets. Marrakech is a sensory smorgasbord you'll never forget, alive with unfamiliar, enticing aromas, and visual splendor. Hit the beach in Agadir, explore the Sahara, wind through markets in Marrakech, dine on couscous at Casablanca restaurants, and head to the oyster capital of Oualidia on the coast.

Go Lion Spotting on the Savanna in Africa

On the costlier end of experiences on this list, African safaris are nevertheless well worth the price tag. A tableaux of natural beauty and menageries of wildlife abound in this part of the planet. In Botswana , you’re likely to get up close and personal with lions. In Kenya , the diverse landscape of the savanna is like something out of a childhood storybook. In Rwanda, trek among gorillas and get an unparalleled peek into the majestic world of these awe-inspiring, intelligent creatures.

In addition to costing a pretty penny, these safaris tend to be a minimum of five to seven days, so they’ll require more of a time commitment than something planned on a whim. And it goes without saying, this is one excursion you’ll definitely want to book with a reliable, trustworthy tour company .

Get Spicy in Goa

India can be overwhelming, particularly for young travelers in their 20s, but Goa, on the western coast along the Arabian Sea, is a solid place to start. The cuisine is resplendent in local flavors like chili, clove, cinnamon, and cardamom, as well as coconuts, pineapples, and mangoes.

Whether you’re eating your way through the hip local food scene or relaxing on palm-lined beaches or bird-watching in the Western Ghats, you’re guaranteed a tranquil, meaningful trip. There’s a wide range of accommodations in Goa — anything from cheap backpacking hangouts to luxury villas — so whatever your tastes may be, it’s likely you’ll find somewhere to hang your hat.

Take a Road Trip on the Best Coast

Valerie de Leon/Travel + Leisure

There's nothing more classically American than traveling with the top down and the sun in your eyes. And there’s no better drive than the Pacific Coast Highway . California is rife with scenic routes — be it San Francisco to L.A. or a trip through wine country.

Take Highway 1 through Carmel-by-the-Sea and  Big Sur for some of the most beautiful sights in the country, or hit the beach in Malibu. Or, opt for a wine country romp through Napa Valley . Of course, there are plenty of lodging options along the way — be it breathtaking campsites or luxury hotels, but if you’re headed toward Palm Springs, spend a night or two in Joshua Tree National Park for a true West Coast experience.

Hop Around Eastern Europe

Alisha McDarris/Travel + Leisure

Eastern Europe is often stereotyped as Western Europe’s less hip sibling, but it’s home to some of the most culturally interesting and architecturally compelling cities in the world. Not to mention that the cost of living (and visiting) is generally lower than in London or Paris.

Prague and Budapest are prime hot spots for college students and young people, particularly in the summer months. Thousands of hostels, bars, clubs, and cafes run the gamut from dive-y to luxury. (Note: The Czech Republic consumes more beer per capita than any other nation in the world, which means that beer is frequently cheaper than water.)

A few other cities to hit on this circuit include Belgrade, Serbia; Bucharest, Romania; and, Varna, Bulgaria . And the cities are really only about a third of the real attraction: Venture into the countryside for scenery that feels like stills from Planet Earth .

Get Festive in Germany

With fairytale forests and elaborate celebrations, Germany is one for the books. Rent a car and wind through the forests , countryside, and national parks to see the mythic German landscape and its storybook castles (just be wary of any witches you may meet on the way). Go clubbing in Berlin , or take a train to some of the country’s small towns for medieval history, beer steins, and half-timbered houses.

Speaking of beer steins, of course you'll want to head to Munich for an authentic Oktoberfest celebration in the fall — just make sure you plan ahead, as flight prices skyrocket, the cost of traditional accommodations can be astronomical, and Airbnb hosts are notoriously picky about their tenants. Or, consider visiting in the wintertime for a classic Christkindl market experience.

Explore Nature in Slovenia

For nature lovers , Slovenia is a country of boundless treasures. From mountain biking to camping on beautiful Lake Bohinj to summiting the daunting Mount Triglav, adventure sport opportunities are around every turn in this quiet corner of the planet. (A word of warning: Beware of the local Slovenians’ definition of the phrase “beginner-level hike.”)

Driving through the countryside is a slightly more serene way to spend a few days exploring the outskirts of Ljubljana, the capital and largest city in Slovenia . The Dragon City, as its sometimes referred to, is a quaint European tourist destination that has perfected the art of riverside patio dining.

Though not exactly a party destination, Slovenia in general is an idyllic setting for a reset or for getting in some quality time with Mother Earth. English is reasonably prevalent in Ljubljana, and locals are quite amiable, but outside of the city prepare to rely on Google Translate to converse with village dwellers.

Jump Around the Greek Islands

Tryfon N. Georgopoulos/Courtesy of Red Savannah

Their whitewashed walls and turquoise waters make the Greek Isles feel like stepping into a postcard. There are actually six main archipelagoes to explore, and most people choose to spend their time island hopping within a particular group, made easy with local ferry operators.

You’ll want to consider the Cyclades, where you’ll get the classic Greek experience (think blue roofs, bougainvillea, and party beaches) in Mykonos and Santorini. There are also the tony hotels on Crete (the largest Greek Island) and the cinematic views of the Sporades made famous in “Mamma Mia!” No matter where you end up, there’s plenty of fun to be found. Tour olive groves and vineyards, indulge in fresh Mediterranean meals, gaze out a deep blue caldera, or just relax on the beach, ouzo cocktail in hand.

Dip Into the Hot Springs of Iceland

The Blue Lagoon, black-sand beaches, and the northern lights await in this beautifully austere landscape. Iceland is a mythic destination (literally, for the Vikings) where you’re sure to see natural wonders you won’t find in many other pockets of the world.

Head here sometime between September and March for peak conditions to see the northern lights (read: darkness — there are only about five hours of daylight this time of year). Whereas in the summer months, the sun sets for only three hours and you’ll find better sightseeing weather if you want to tour the glacial lagoons and volcanic islands that make this the "Land of Fire and Ice.”

Reykjavik makes a great home base and gives you a taste of the local culture (literally, if you slide into a table at one of the city’s many delectable restaurants). Of course, you can also stay directly at the Blue Lagoon (or many of the country’s other hot springs ) or hunker down in a prime northern lights viewing destination .

Camp at the Grand Canyon

Make the ultimate southwestern pilgrimage to one of America’s most famous national parks for the views and camping of a lifetime. Featuring the gorgeous red rocks that make Arizona famous, the canyon runs for 278 miles with plenty of opportunities for backcountry hiking, stargazing, and whitewater trips down the Colorado River.

Hiking in Grand Canyon National Park takes a good amount of preparation (this is the desert, after all, with plenty of steep cliffs and drop-offs), but the payoff will be well worth it once you’re gazing out at one of the Hermit Road scenic overlooks. Whether you decide to tackle the more accessible South Rim or the less-crowded North Rim, you’ll be rewarded with world-class views and bragging-worthy campsites . If you prefer a less rugged experience, however, Under Canvas does have a Grand Canyon location where you’ll sleep soundly in your safari-inspired glamping tent just 40 minutes from the Grand Canyon Village.

Travel in your 20s: 15 trips to take before you hit 30

Want to travel in your 20s but not sure where to start? Here are 15 different trips to add to your travel bucket list to tick off during this decade.

A heck of a lot happens in your 20s. From college experiences to long-term loves to fresh careers to first homes, your 20s are a decade packed with growth and change.

And while it can be tempting to rush to the traditional goal posts that society sets for us, like marriage, mortgage and babies, it’s also really important to realise that for most of us, this is the time in our lives that we have the best balance of minimal responsibilities and maximum freedom. And that’s something to take advantage of!

petra treasury

Everyone’s situation is different and not everyone will have the same access or ability to travel in their 20s, but travel doesn’t have to mean flying thousands of kilometres away from home and maxing out our credit card. Even a budget holiday or local adventure can do wonders for getting us out of our comfort zones, opening our eyes to other ways of life and building our self-confidence.

Whether you’re heading into your 20s, on your way out of the decade, or you’re already past it and want to give the decade another go just for fun, here are 15 bucket list ways to travel in your 20s.

Disclaimer before anyone comes at me in the comments: You CAN travel after your 20s. As I type this I’m planning my second multi-year round the world adventure which I hope will take me into my early to mid-30s. Travel doesn’t have an age limit, these trips are just suggestions for where young travellers in their 20s could start if they’re just kicking off their travel life.

A girls’ trip (or lads’ trip!)

A week or weekend away with your best girlfriends is an essential trip in your 20s. There’s nothing quite like spending a day exploring an unknown city with your besties, ordering a table full of local dishes to share between your group, then making your way through the cocktail menu while dancing up a storm to 90s bangers. Ah, the dream.

Some of my all-time favourite destinations for a girls’ trip are Mykonos in Greece, New York City, Turkey, and Bali in Indonesia.

A solo trip

I’m obsessed with solo travel ( can’t you tell? ) so I’m a bit biased here, but I firmly believe that everyone needs to travel solo at least once in their lives, and what better time to do it than in your 20s?

Solo travel is good for the soul, and it can have an incredibly positive impact on everything from your mindset to your resilience to your self-assurance. You’re forced to rely on yourself rather than on the people around you, you get to do what you want when you want without anyone getting in the way of your plans, and chances are you’ll meet far more people and make more friends than if you were travelling with people you already knew.

If a solo trip abroad seems way too crazy for you, start by taking an overnight trip away from home and slowly work your way up to something bigger.

My top suggestions for your first solo trip are Australia, the UK, Thailand, and Canada.

A romantic getaway

Slightly off-brand for me since I am not romantic whatsoever, but taking a trip with your partner is a great way to travel in your 20s. Whether you’re looking for a fly ‘n’ flop island holiday or an active adventure that pushes you both to your limits, travelling with someone you love is always one for the memory books.

As an added bonus, travelling as a couple is a brilliant way of testing your relationship’s ability to handle a bit of pressure before you get super serious. Travel brings out a different side in people, there’s logistical difficulties, financial stress and problems to solve, and the way that your potential life partner deals with these could show you some red or green flags. If they’re bad to travel with, they’re proooobably not going to be great to spend the rest of your life with.

(Told you I’m not romantic!)

An extended trip

While a couple of weeks off work for a holiday is always a treat, if you can save up your annual leave for a whole month off or even manage to request a sabbatical from your job, an extended trip is one way to learn a lot about yourself in a very short period of time.

Shorter trips can often be planned before you go, which means you can really relax and enjoy your time away. When you plan something longer than 3-4 weeks, you need to be flexible with your plans, which means going with the flow and dealing with issues on the road. Learning to roll with the punches is such an important skill to have throughout life, and gaining that skill through an epic adventure is probably the best way to get it.

Your choice of destination for an extended trip will depend on your location but many Kiwis and Aussies will opt for Europe, Europeans will opt for New Zealand or Australia, and many young travellers around the world head to Southeast Asia for a month or so of backpacking.

A working holiday

A month or so not long enough for you? It wasn’t for me either, enter the working holiday!

A working holiday (also known as a gap year) is where young people move overseas with the main aim of travelling, but they get access to a special visa which allows them to legally work to fund their travels. There are working holiday visa options in many countries around the world including NZ, Australia, the UK, Ireland, Canada and the USA, but each country has different eligibility requirements.

There are loads of reasons to do a working holiday, but the main benefits are that you can get amongst the local life of wherever you move to, you can explore the nearby areas without a strict time limit, and it looks brilliant on any CV.

Working holiday tip : Many companies (like my desk job before being a blogger) have offices or even sister companies overseas, which can offer an easy path into taking a working holiday. Consider these future options when you’re tossing up jobs to apply for, and start these conversations with your manager as early in your career as possible.

A luxury getaway

Treat yourself, you deserve it! There are plenty of milestones to celebrate in our 20s, from graduations to engagements to break ups to hitting our career goals, so book a fancy hotel, pop a bottle of champagne from your sea-view balcony and enjoy the good life.

If you can’t afford a full on luxury adventure (let’s be honest, neither can I), consider travelling in a way I like to call “shithouse to penthouse”*. Book the majority of your trip in a cheaper, self-catering accommodation to save on nightly spend and food, then splurge on a night or two at a five star hotel. This is how I stayed at luxury hotels in Hawaii, Portugal, Mykonos and Bali without blowing out my budget.

*Shithouse to penthouse isn’t a fair representation because the cheaper option could be super lovely and not shitty at all, it just needs to be cheap! But I can’t change the name because nothing else is as catchy.

warwick ibah hotel pool in ubud bali

A backpacking trip

And on the totally opposite end of the scale, another bucket list trip in your 20s is a backpacker adventure where you’re on a mission to make your money go as far as possible.

Whether you’re making your way around the lovingly-nicknamed Banana Pancake Trail in Southeast Asia or embarking on a classic Eurotrip, a stint of hostels, overnight bus rides and pub crawls will likely give you life-long friends, unforgettable memories and, without a doubt, some serious financial prowess. Did I once live off Nutella crepes and coconut ice cream for one month in Thailand and Cambodia? Yes.

Even when you reach the point of never wanting to stay in a dorm room or chug a cocktail bucket ever again, the people you meet, the experiences you have and the skills you learn while backpacking will stay with you for a lifetime.

Hands up if you travel for food 🙋🏼‍♀️

If you love doing a deep dive into the culinary scene of wherever you’re visiting, doing a fully food-focused adventure is absolutely one for your bucket list. And while food trips are incredible no matter your age, I do feel that my metabolism and energy levels were much more prepared for a full day of eating in my early 20s!

I’ve never cared about watching what I eat, especially while I’m travelling, because it’s my personal belief that life is too short to say no to pasta when you’re in Italy (and no to cheese in France, and no to kebabs in Turkey, and so on and so forth). But while I used to be able to handle carb-heavy and sugar-filled dishes from dawn til dusk with no issues, as I near my 30th birthday a main-sized portion of carbonara for lunch is likely to put me to sleep before you can say happy hour.

Make the most of a youthful metabolism and food crawl your way around a country or continent before you lose the chance.

An active adventure

If you’re the type of traveller who loves pushing your body to its physical limit (and I don’t mean by eating pasta three times a day), there are some incredible active adventures you could add to your travel to do list before you hit 30.

Some of the classic active trips are trekking to Everest Base Camp or Machu Picchu, hitting the slopes in Whistler or Zermatt, or doing your PADI open water dive course somewhere like the Thai Islands, Great Barrier Reef or Belize.

A road trip

The freedom and spontaneity of a road trip is one of the best feelings in the world, knowing that you can hit the road when you want and drive where you want without having to adhere to transport times or other travellers.

Road tripping can be a bit tougher for those in their early 20s as many car rental companies have additional costs if you’re under 25, but when you hit the sweet spot of being a confident driver in any car and country, not having to pay extra for a young driver surcharge, and still having the ability to roam freely without worrying about responsibilities back home, it’s a great place to be.

Try the van life

Taking a road trip to another level, van life is one travel style that has taken social media by storm. I bet you can picture it: cosying up in your favourite blanket, sipping a coffee as you watch the sunrise from the back window of your van parked up by the beach, set to a dreamy tune on repeat in a 15 second Tik Tok video.

While at times it might seem a bit overdone, the truth is that van life brings a whole new meaning to freedom and it’s something everyone should try at least once!

If you don’t like the idea of having to cook your stir fry on a hot plate that’s about 10cm away from your pillow in the back of a Toyota Hiace (I don’t blame you), I’d recommend upgrading from van life to motorhome life. A friend and I did an epic South Island road trip in a 6.3m 4-berth motorhome and absolutely loved it!

A cultural awakening

Most trips encompass some aspect of learning about a new culture, but planning a trip specifically focused on understanding a different way of life is something super special to experience in your younger years.

Whether you jump on an in-depth group tour to somewhere off the beaten track, participate in a formal exchange where you get to live in a totally different destination, or perhaps you want to learn more about your family’s background and choose to take a heritage trip to your homeland, a cultural adventure is good for the soul and the mind.

A group tour

Many travellers seem to have a bit of an aversion to group tours because they think they’re too touristy and don’t give you enough of an in-depth experience. Of course it depends on the specific tour, but from my group tour experiences I think that’s totally incorrect.

My first group tour was a Contiki down the East Coast of the USA when I was 20, and I still keep in contact with some people in that group ten years later. I’ve since done two more Contiki tours (Europe at 24, Southeast Asia at 27) plus two G Adventures tours in Asia, two Travel Talk tours (Jordan and Turkey), a One Life Philippines tour and a Medsailors Croatia tour all in my late 20s, and I’ve had an incredible time on every single one of them.

If you’re confident and clued up enough to travel independently then that does open many more doors, and it *usually* means your money will go further (not always), but a group tour is perfect for young or new travellers who want security, those short on time, or anyone who is travelling solo and wants to meet like-minded travel buddies.

A festival trip

Festival travel is one for any bucket list, but planning trips around festival dates can be expensiiiiive so it can be hard to make it work once you have kids to run around after or a pricey mortgage to cover each week.

Some of the most popular festivals to add to your bucket list are Oktoberfest in Munich, Holi Festival in India, Burning Man in Nevada and Tomorrowland in Belgium.

trips for 20 30 year olds

An island hopping trip

Last but certainly not least, island hopping is another travel style that requires a bit of flexibility while having enough spending money to travel comfortably. Whether you want to go solo and join a sailing tour, or get a bunch of friends together to book out a boat, spending a week or so at sea is one of the best things you’ll ever do.

You can island hop in many places around the world depending on what type of adventure you’re looking for. There’s an awesome island hopping pass in Fiji that gives you a night at different resorts all through the Yasawa Islands, you could jump on a yacht tour in Croatia or Greece, or cruise around the paradise islands in the Caribbean.

I bet your bucket list is full now! Hopefully that list has inspired you to plan some epic adventures in your 20s (or beyond). I’d love to hear what type of travel in your 20s is most appealing to you, let me know in the comments!

30 After 30: The Thirty Best Travel Destinations for 30+ Travelers

30 Travel Destinations Worth Waiting For - In Your 30s, 40s, 50s and Beyond!

A few months ago I set out to write a “30 Before 30” “bucket list” travel guide.  Thirty things that every traveler should do before they turn thirty.  I quickly realized that was a ridiculous idea, as it would take a pretty broad stretch of the imagination to identify thirty different things that would appeal to any and every twenty-something traveler.  Plus, assuming that eighteen is the age of majority in your region, that really only gives you twelve years of independent adulthood to work your way through thirty different travel challenges.  Who’s got time for that?

I knew I had to shift my thinking.  I started to wonder why we focus so much on the years between eighteen and thirty, when it’s actually the years after that when we’re more likely to have the ability, time, money, knowledge, skills and confidence to embark on life-changing travel adventures.  Screw “thirty before thirty” (in the nicest way possible, of course)… I wanted to make a “thirty after thirty” list of the destinations around the world that are truly worth waiting for .

I reached out to more than twenty-five other “seasoned” travel writers and asked them to share their favorite destinations for travelers in their thirties, forties, fifties and beyond.  From opulent luxury getaways to once-in-a-lifetime wildlife encounters to complete cultural immersion, they found travel destinations that definitely won’t disappoint even the most experienced travelers.  And the great news is that with the average American citizen living to be seventy-eight years old (and with lifespans even longer in many other countries!) you’ve got plenty of time to visit all thirty of these destinations… no need to pack them all into a single decade just to cross them off an arbitrary bucket list!

Often, traveling around Europe is associated with travelers in their late teens or early twenties, with big backpacks and an Interrail pass.  And yes, that image does accurately describe how I spent the summers in the mid-2000s!  However, I’m thirty-five years old now, and I have a completely different approach to travel in Europe.  I’m more willing to pay for little luxuries, to travel slowly and to go off the beaten path to have authentic travel experiences.  If you’re a little more mature (or even just a little older, not necessarily more mature!) consider adding these European gems to your “30 After 30” travel plans.

#1 – Costa Brava, Spain

30 After 30 Travel Destinations - Costa Brava, Spain

While Spain’s big-city Barcelona gets a lot of tourist attention, the region north of the Catalan capital, the Costa Brava, deserves accolades as well. Full of relaxing beaches, a craggy coastline, and quaint villages, the “brave coast” is ideal for travelers who want to relax and explore destinations of authentic Catalan culture. The Costa Brava doesn’t disappoint for those over 30 – when your appreciation for culture, history, and nature deepens more and more!

The Costa Brava is the beloved region of international artist Salvador Dalí. He was born in the small town of Figueres, which houses the eccentric and incredible Salvador Dalí Museum-Theater. If you’re looking for scenery, the picturesque town Cadaqués is a whitewashed former fishing village with quiet coves and a rocky coast. Other than being a favorite vacation spot for Dalí, Cadaqués was also a special destination for other artists like Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró. For Game of Thrones fans, the small town of Girona is an underrated Spanish town that boasts a gorgeous Gothic cathedral, Roman remains, and medieval buildings. On the Costa Brava’s interior, you can find scenic natural areas like the rocky Cap de Creus National Park, the Montseny mountain range, and ancient volcanoes in Garrotxa.

Carly’s Tip – If you’re passing through Barcelona on your trip to the Costa Brava, stay in one of my five favorite neighborhoods in the city!

#2 – Bologna, Italy

30 Over 30 - Travel to Bologna in Your Forties and Fifties

Many first-time travelers to Italy hit the big three: Rome, Florence, and Venice. But, once travelers start to plan repeat travels to Italy, they start to look for more sophisticated destinations. One of these top destinations to visit has to be Bologna, in Emilia Romagna.

Bologna, and some of the nearby cities like Modena and Parma, are home to slow food and fast cars. That means it’s a destination for people who want a little more than cheap street-side pizza. One of the main reasons to visit is to taste all of the famous Bologna foods . This includes mortadella, lasagna, and tagliatelle ragu.  As well, you can taste some of the top Emilia Romagna food products that are known around the world, including prosciutto, Parmigiano Reggiano, and traditional balsamic vinegar.  It’s also possible to go truffle hunting just outside of the city, in the Bologna Hills. In fact, only thirty minutes from Bologna is Savigno, the City of Truffles, where it is possible to go truffle hunting in the surrounding hills.

Amber, 43, from With Husband in Tow

Carly’s Tip: I also recommend Turin, Piemonte , for an authentic Italian experience!

#3 – Budapest, Hungary

Travel Destinations For 30-Somethings - Budapest, Hungary

I visited Budapest last summer and it was unexpectedly amazing! I often compared it to Paris and decided quickly that if given the opportunity, I’d return in a heartbeat.

There are so many things to do in Budapest that five days were barely enough to truly get a feel for this incredible historic city. A visit to Budapest’s Jewish Quarter is, for me, a must do. I’m not Jewish but to explore this area, especially with a local guide, is truly incredible. Visit the Kazinczy Synagogue and the Dohany Synagogue, the largest synagogue in Europe. Make sure to take time to explore the ruin pubs in the Jewish Quarter as well. While party locations at night, Szimpla Kert is so unique that its definitely worth exploring during the day. The building housed Jewish families during the war and now, you can even enjoy a Sunday brunch offered by local farmers and producers.

Another amazing area to explore in Budapest is Castle Hill, especially the area around Matthias Church and Fisherman’s Bastion on the Pest side of Budapest. Matthias Church is stunning inside and the view over Parliament from the tower is one of the best views in Budapest. Just outside, you’ll find Fisherman’s Bastion with its peaked points similar to a fairy tale castle.

Finally, if you’re looking for an evening activity, you have to take a night time cruise on the Danube. The lights of Budapest at night are incredible. Parliament is truly one of the most beautiful buildings I’ve experienced and to see it glow against the water at night is a lifetime experience. Budapest is truly one of the world’s most incredible cities.

#4 – The Azores, Portugal

30 After 30 Travel Destinations - Azores Islands, Portugal

The Azores is one of the best places for travelers of any age, but it is especially a fantastic destination for those of us over 30. I first went around a year and a half ago, have been planning several trips back since and can’t wait to embark on my next one!

The Azores are a group of nine volcanic islands remotely located in the middle of the Atlantic in between Portugal and the United States. The main island, Sao Miguel , is home to the largest Azorean city, Ponta Delgada, and several of the islands’ natural wonders. The east side of the island is where Furnas is located; Furnas is a geothermal Disneyland where the local delicacy (Cozido das Furnas) is created and cooked underground in the Earth’s heat. On the island’s west side, you will find crater lakes and some of the most spectacular views the island has to offer, such as Miradouro da Boca do Inferno which overlooks the town of Sete Cidades and stunning, green crater lakes.

The other eight islands are completely unique in their own rights- from volcanic peaks to being saturated with waterfalls… the Azores are one of the best places to visit for those of us over 30. Getting to Azores is fairly easy from continental Europe and is becoming increasingly easier for those located in Canada and the US. The islands are gaining fame these days for their landscape and scenery and it is not long before they are a top contender for the most desirable place in the world to visit.

#5 – Berlin, Germany

The first time I went to Berlin I got sucked so deeply into the city’s non-stop nightlife scene that I hardly saw any of the German capital.  It was my second trip, when I was thirty-four years old, that really helped me get to know the city, its culture and its people… and it was on that trip that I truly fell in love with Berlin.

Traveling to Berlin in my thirties meant that I didn’t have the energy (or the desire, for that matter) to go out partying from midnight to 9:00 am.  I mean, those are prime sleeping hours!  Instead, I trusted my body’s biological rhythms.  I woke up fairly early every morning for a hearty German breakfast (my favorite was the complimentary breakfast served at Casa Camper Berlin ) and then set out to explore the city by public transportation and by foot.  In the afternoon I might stop by a bar along the riverfront for an ice-cold glass of radler, and in the evening I sampled amazing German vegetarian food (okay, and just a teeny-bit of nightlife) before retiring to bed before 1:00 am every night.  I felt energized, balanced, happy and healthy every day, which is a lot more than I can say for my previous, hangover-filled visit to Berlin!

#6 – Amsterdam, Netherlands

30 After 30 Travel Destinations - Amsterdam, Netherlands

Think of Amsterdam and you think of young drunk and/or stoned travellers ignoring the city’s famous canals and culture in favour of coffee shops and bars. While there is no age limit for coffee shops or bars, and I know visitors of all ages like the city’s relaxed marijuana laws, Amsterdam has so much to enjoy for a traveller in their 30s or older.

It goes without saying that Amsterdam is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and so just wandering around is enough of a treat for travellers of all ages, but older (and more sober!) visitors may like to find hidden gems such as the Begijnhof Square in the middle of the city, which has Amsterdam’s oldest wooden house and a church featuring some Piet Mondrian artwork, or De Papegaai Church on the city’s busiest shopping street Kalverstraat.

It’s also worth mentioning the fact that Amsterdam has countless things to do , including more museums per capita than any other city, festivals for all occasions at all times of the year, and a highly underrated foodie scene, including 16 Michelin-starred restaurants. And if you do still want to enjoy Amsterdam’s coffee shop scene and the famous Red Light District, then you can do so in a surprisingly informative way by visiting the Cannabis Museum or by going on a tour of the Red Light District given by a former sex worker.

30 After 30 Travel Destinations in Asia

Asia is one of the most popular continents for budget travelers, which makes it especially popular with young, inexperienced travelers on a shoestring.  Over the years, though, I’ve learned that there’s so much more to Asia than the cheap beers and budget hotels of Southeast Asia, and it’s a continent that I’ve grown to appreciate so much more in my thirties.  In fact, in six weeks I’ll be departing for a trip that crosses of more than ten of the thirty travel destinations I’ve always wanted to visit most.  This trip will take me from Taiwan to Bali to Kuala Lumpur to Istanbul to Bishkek to Tashkent to Delhi… and beyond!  Follow my trip on Facebook , or keep reading below for more Asia travel inspiration from distinctly different destinations.

#7 – Iran

30 After 30 Travel Destinations - Iran

Travelling to Iran is always a very cultural experience. I’ve been visiting this Middle Eastern country since I was 32 and I always can’t wait to go back. There is a great variety of experiences to be chased in Iran, from delving into the history of their Achaemenid Empire in Persepolis, near Shiraz, to discovering the mesmerising architecture of the Safavid era in Isfahan to exploring the Zoroastrian culture in the ancient city of Yazd.

In Iran, alcohol is illegal and so are night and disco clubs. Sure, you can find booze and underground parties if you really can’t stay away from it for a couple of weeks, but being illegal, it’s very risky. This doesn’t mean that there are no coffee shops in the Iranian cities. I loved the ones in Tehran’s Enghelab Street, those in Isfahan’s Armenian quarter Jolfa and the ones around the main Naqsh-e Jahan Square, where you can enjoy different delicious teas, drinks and cakes in an atmosphere that blends modern and traditional décor.

There are many tourists in Iran, including many young people, and most visitors respect the laws of the country. This makes Iran makes a more tranquil over-30 travel destination, but it definitely doesn’t make it less exciting. Each season has its festivals and regions to visit, each city its history and landmarks, and each market its stories. Iran requires a more savvy way of travelling, but it’s a country of perpetual discovery and for sure it’s never boring.

#8 – Arunachal Pradesh, India

30 After 30 Travel Destinations - Arunachal Pradesh

Travelling in the remote region of Arunachal Pradesh is easily one of our travel highlights in recent years. India’s Seven Sisters, a somewhat tribal region made up of seven states, is one of India’s least explored places, and Arunachal Pradesh is probably the most difficult of the country’s northeastern states to travel in.

Travelling on the abysmal roads in Arunachal Pradesh is tough, and not for the faint-hearted. The region tends to be expensive when compared to other places in India, and the process of obtaining the necessary permits can be rather off-putting. Nevertheless, Arunachal Pradesh is one of the most beautiful and diverse regions we have been to, with its wild mountainous interior, friendly locals and unusual tribal traditions.

A good understanding of the region’s tribal culture is essential when travelling in Arunachal Pradesh, especially if you intend to spend a fair amount of time there. Although not obligatory, guides may be necessary in some of the areas, particularly if you would like to experience and understand some of the tribal rituals such as those of the Apatani tribe in the Ziro Valley.

The majestic beauty of Arunachal Pradesh is mind-blowing and this, together with its rich cultural heritage, makes the little-explored Northeast Indian state one of our favourite over-thirty travel destinations!

#9 – Jordan

30 After 30 Travel Destinations - Jordan

You don’t travel in your thirties for the same reasons that you travel in your 20’s. The “life of da party” is (for most) over and you can afford to travel to more expensive destinations. One of the first high-budget trips I took when I turned thirty was Jordan.

I had dreamed of going to Jordan ever since I watched Indiana Jones, but I knew it was not that easy to backpack. When planning my travels I realized that just the visa and the entrance to the most popular site in Jordan (Petra) would cost me more than 150 dollars! On top of that, there aren’t many ways to go from one place to the next because there are very few public buses. The best way to travel around is to either book a tour, rent a car or hire a private guide and driver like we did. When it comes accommodations, you won’t find my hostels or budget hotels like in many other countries. Jordan is a fabulous country, but you’d better have a good income to be able to afford it!

#10 – Lebanon

Travel Destinations for 30+ Travelers - Lebanon

A great place for travelers over thirty, and also a very underrated travel destination, is Lebanon. Officially called Lebanese Republic, the country is located at the crossroads of the Arabian hinterland and the Mediterranean Basin. Yes, it is bordered by Syria to the north and east and by Israel to the south. But that actually doesn’t mean much, as long as you don’t go border hopping.

Lebanon may not be a typical holiday destination, although it a lot to offer. You can even visit the snow-covered mountains in the morning and then and chill at the beaches of the Mediterranean sea in the afternoon. Be ready for the most beautiful sunsets, visit the incredible historical sites such as Baalbek and the whole Beqaa Valley, enjoy evenings in bars and hidden clubs, and eat your way through the traditional restaurants of lively Beirut. Where other destinations offer just what twenty-somethings are looking for, Lebanon is on the rise to be the perfect thirty-something-travel destination.

#11 – Maldives

30 After 30 Travel Destinations - Maldives

We think one of the best places for more seasoned travelers would be the islands of Maldives. Maldives is made up of 1200 islands, but only around 200 are inhabited. There are two types of islands: local islands, and resort islands. The resort islands are perfect for a relaxing luxury getaway.

Overwater bungalows are the most sought after accommodations on these islands, and for good reason. You can enjoy your days in your overwater bungalow, swim in your own private infinity pool on the deck, and head out to snorkel in your own part of the sea. There are several islands that have some great all-inclusive resorts, where you can have the run of the entire island and everything taken care of for you. One of our favorite resorts was Robinson Club Noonu . This resort owns the entire island, so it was more of a small resort type feel, where we could go wherever we wanted by foot around the island.

If you’re looking for a luxurious vacation in your thirties and beyond, Maldives is worth checking out!

#12 – Malaysian Borneo

30 After 30 Travel Destinations - Malaysian Borneo

Malaysian Borneo is a versatile destination for nature lovers, scuba divers and snorkelers, and foodies alike. If you love wild jungle beaches, rainforests and wildlife, river cruises, colonial cities, and adventurous activities, look no further. Borneo is a perfect choice for older travelers who are looking for off-the-beaten-path destinations, fun in the sun, and soft adventures, since it’s more mature than many other Asian islands and definitely not a party destination.

Even a two-week itinerary in Borneo can include all of the above: You can see orangutans and proboscis monkeys in their natural habitat, unwind on paradise islands where you can swim with turtles and sharks, eat your way through a couple of colonial cities, hike in the rainforest and even summit Mt Kinabalu. If you’re more into relaxing in five-star, all-inclusive resorts, Borneo still keeps you satisfied and offers varied day tours to wildlife sanctuaries and national parks, world-famous caves, and marine reserves.

30 After 30 Travel Destinations in North America

Hailing from North America myself, I have seen embarrassingly little of my home continent, choosing instead to travel to the opposite corners of the world.  I’ve been to Madrid, Spain, more times than I’ve been been to the next city over from my hometown (and it’s literally only twenty miles down the road!).  So, I had to turn to my travel blogger friends for more details about the best destinations for thirty-something travelers in North America, and they helped me generate this list of spectacularly sophisticated “30 After 30” trip ideas, with a heavy emphasis on sun-seeking getaways and cultural hotspots.  Count me in!

#13 – Havana, Cuba

30 After 30 Travel Destinations - Havana, Cuba

I first visited Havana when I was 40. I had traveled all over Latin America but for some reason I found Cuba to be very intimidating. I learned it was nothing like I feared and so much more than I expected. But I do think it’s a great country to visit after you turn 30 and have had several years on independent travel under your belt.

There is an incredible culture of art, dance and music in Cuba. And there are amazing restaurants and cafes that serve local Cuban coffee . But you need to also deal with many of the frustrations of a country that suffers from food shortages and a US embargo. Many times you’ll enter a restaurant and half the items on the menu aren’t available. And perhaps it can be frustrating when not everyone speaks English. And wifi in Cuba is an on-going issue so you’re phone likely doesn’t work and you won’t be able to be on the internet all day. And…

Fortunately, with age and more experience traveling, you begin to embrace unique qualities in a country – like the Cubans’ incredible passion for music and dance. And you realize that you don’t need to be online all day, or have cable television in your room or fast food options. Havana is an incredible city of contradictions. Well-educated, modern citizens in a destination many people incorrectly think is frozen in time. Fortunately, with age you realize Cuba isn’t just about classic cars, cigars and mojitos but about the culture that continues to evolve despite all of its challenges. And that’s why over-thirty travellers love Cuba.

#14 – Valladolid, Mexico

30 After 30 Travel Destinations - Valladolid, Mexico

Valladolid Mexico is often perceived to be a small, boring city on the Yucatan Peninsula, but that is not at all true. This city is exactly the place you are looking for when you are in your thirties (or beyond!) and tired of the hustle and bustle of Cancun and Playa del Carmen.

Valladolid is one of the most upcoming travel destinations in Mexico because of its super laid-back vibe. This is not a party place at all!  Valladolid is where you simply get lost in the streets and admire the historical buildings and search for hidden courtyards with local boutique shops. Lovely coffee shops, delicious vegetarian restaurants, and smoothie bars are opening everywhere around town and yoga workshops can be found across the city. On top of that, some of the best Yucatan cenotes can be found here as well. Renting a car and explore the cenotes around Valladolid is one of the best things to do in Yucatan (along with sleeping in one of the many historical haciendas).  I promise that Valladolid is one of those places that you will start liking more and more the longer you stay!

#15 – San Pancho, Mexico

Playa San Pancho / San Pancho Beach

In my twenties, I often traveled to Sayulita, Mexico for a long weekend getaway of surfing, suntanning and boutique shopping.  In my thirties, though, I prefer to head five miles down Mexico’s Nayarit Coast to San Pancho , a much smaller, less-hectic fishing village that has barely been touched by tourism.

San Pancho is ideal for travelers in their thirties, forties and fifties who are looking for an authentic Mexican beach experience, minus the crowds, plus just enough comforts to make you want to come back again and again.  I always check in at Hotel Cielo Rojo , a locally-owned boutique hotel with breathtaking decor and homey touches like complimentary in-room tequila (yes, you heard me right!).  After borrowing a beach chair and umbrella from the hotel, I head two blocks down the road to the beach, which is a stunning strip of golden sand with more than enough space to spread out.  I could spend all day at the beach, reading a book under my umbrella and occasionally dipping my toes in the refreshing water, but I always succumb to the temptation of San Pancho’s surprising vegan and vegetarian cuisine culture, stopping by one of many local restaurants serving healthy brunches and seasonal organic dinner.  Everything is easy in San Pancho, making it ideal for older travelers looking for a break from a high-stress job (or mid-life crisis!).

#16 – Antigua, Guatemala

30 After 30 Travel Destinations - Antigua, Guatemala

Visiting the colonial city of Antigua, Guatemala when you’re over thirty is a rewarding experience. The UNESCO World Heritage site was once one of the great cities of the Spanish Empire and the grandeur of its schools, monasteries, churches and government buildings can best be experienced by staying in the atmospheric colonial buildings that have converted into boutique hotels. Unlike when I was younger and my budget only allowed me to stay in a grim hotel on the outskirts of the historic zone, now that I’m older and have a bit more disposable income I’ve been able to stay in some unforgettable accommodations. A little more flexibility in your budget is especially valuable during Guatemala’s festivals and celebrations, such as Holy Week, when rooms are scarce and prices high.

One of the most beautiful boutique hotels I’ve enjoyed is Hotel La Catedral, an authentic Spanish Colonial home dating to the 1700s which was originally built as part of the Palacio de los Capitanes Generales, a sprawling palace with stone pillars facing Antigua’s leafy Main Plaza. It’s just steps to the impressive Cathedral of San Jose and staying so close means being able to see the Holy Week processions as they proceed down the cobblestone streets in front of the hotel. I was able to spend leisurely afternoons on the rooftop terrace featuring panoramic views of Volcan de Agua, and in the evenings it was possible to see neon red lava spilling from the cone of still-active Volcan de Fuego.

As an older traveller I’m also interested in many more of the cultural activities offered in Antigua than I was in the past. Cooking classes, market tours and architectural walking tours are all activities that appeal to me now but weren’t of interest to me in my younger years. It’s the most rewarding time to travel and Antigua is filled with riches.

#17 – Vancouver, Canada

30 After 30 - Vancouver, BC, Canada Travel

Vancouver, British Columbia is a great destination for travelers over 30, and as a native Vancouverite, I’ve enjoyed many aspects of Vancouver as a mature woman.

If you’re a foodie, you’ll find that Vancouver is chock-full of great restaurants at all price points, and it has particularly good Asian food. Fine dining restaurants are also in good supply, particularly in downtown Vancouver. Cocktail bars in Vancouver are excellent and attract people of all ages, with bartenders vying for best mixologist honours.

Vancouver is also a great destination for athletic pursuits of all kinds. Winter sports like downhill and cross-country skiing and snowboarding can be enjoyed within thirty minutes of the city center at local mountains, with world-class skiing at Whistler just an hour and a half away. Summer fun at beautiful local beaches, sailing, and amazing hiking is all within arms-reach too. No matter what you enjoy doing in the outdoors, you’ll love doing it in Vancouver.

If culture is your jam, you’ll find some of the best examples of First Nations art at many Vancouver galleries. The music scene in Vancouver is lively and the nightlife abundant. Live theatre in Vancouver is especially good and there is a great variety of professional theatre companies. Come to Vancouver – it’s a great destination!

#19 – Nashville, United States

30 After 30 Travel Destinations - Nashville, Tennessee

One of our favorite destinations is Nashville, Tennessee. This capital of the south makes a great weekend getaway for people in their 30s… and there’s good reason!

The flavors and sounds of the south come alive in Nashville. This is Music City USA after all. Nashville is more than the country music, and there’s so much more to the city than the Grand Ole Opry and Country Music Hall of Fame. The clubs in Nashville feature a wide range of musical styles including rock, blues, folk, and even punk. But, unlike in college towns and other big cities, you won’t feel out of place going out for a night on the town if you’re in your thirties (or even older!). Nashville welcomes one and all.

The city is also a culinary powerhouse. Yes, you’ll find southern BBQ, but you’ll also find so much more. Nashville’s food scene can handle the most refined palate. And there’s a ton of breweries and distilleries in the area to quench your thirst. For us, when it comes to weekend getaways, Nashville is at the top of our list.

#20 – New York City, United States

30 After 30 Travel Destinations - New York City, USA

One of the favorite destinations we have visited on our thirty’s is New York City in the United States. This place just has it all: awesome parks (like Central Park) to walk and relax, great restaurants of all kinds of food, awesome museums, outdoor activities, skyscrapers with 360º views of the town and so much more. You can find nightlife for all tastes and for us one of the best night activities were going up to the rooftops of hotels and restaurants to enjoy a glass of wine with the view of the city that never sleeps. The good thing is that in this city there are activities for everyone, no matter what your interests are or if you are traveling alone, with friends or with your loved one. This is what makes us fall more deeply in love with the place, we never felt like strangers in any place because there are many other over thirty’s like us visiting the places we wanted to see. You can’t get tired of New York and there is no way of seeing it all in just one trip, so everyone leaves wanting to get back as soon as possible.

30 After 30 Travel Destinations in South America

South America is another continent where I’ve only dipped my toes into the amazingly diverse travel opportunities.  I blame it on the seasons, as I can usually only travel during the South American winter.  (I can hear your eyes rolling from here.)  After reading about these amazing ecotourism and adventure travel opportunities in South America, though, I am pretty sure that I’ll be adding stops across this continent onto my 30 After 30 “to visit” list!

#21 – Fernando de Noronha, Brazil

30 After 30 Travel Destinations - Fernando de Noronha

Paradise island Fernando de Noronha , 340 km off the Brazilian coast, is one of the world’s most exclusive islands, a national park, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. To preserve the delicate ecosystem, the number of tourists is limited to a maximum of 500 per day and visitors must pay a daily environmental tax fee. That makes Fernando de Noronha a costly destination, accessible to people having rather deep pockets… such as 30+ travelers!

Forget parties and nightlife. Fernando de Noronha is suited to mature travelers in search of peacefulness and unspoiled nature. I had the privilege of spending a few days on the island when I was in my forties, after having saved money for months to afford a trip I had long dreamed of. With stunning golden beaches, black volcanic rocks emerging from crystal-clear turquoise water, and breathtaking views from atop the steep cliffs, Fernando de Noronha felt like paradise. Even today, it remains one of the most beautiful places I ever visited.

#22 – Patagonia, Argentina

30 After 30 Travel Destinations - Patagonia, Argentina

Patagonia is an incredible destination. This huge region of South America sprawls across two countries (Argentina and Chile) and is perfect for people who enjoy nature, adventure and mountain hiking and who are experienced enough travelers to carefully plan their trips, for with such huge distances nothing comes easy in this part of the world. Though bars and pubs in Patagonia get crowded with people who enjoy a beer after a strenuous hike, this isn’t the kind of place where you can expect late night partying. It is all about trying to eat an earthy meal, going to bed early and waking up even earlier to get on the trails, to admire sunrise and to walk as much as possible. Patagonia is thus perfect for people who have grown out of the party-scene, who just want to be in the nature to be mesmerized by the incredible mountain, river and lake views; and who appreciate the force of the elements.

#23 – Easter Island, Chile

30 After 30 Travel Destinations - Easter Island

Easter Island is situated off the coast of Chile and to get there its a five-and-a-half-hour flight from Santiago, Chile. The island is, of course, known for its mysterious and iconic moai statues. Having seen them, it’s no wonder they are one of the worlds greatest phenomenons!

Easter Island is reasonably small, and you can drive around it in a day, but to explore all the moai heads, you’ll need a few days. There are a couple of sights that should definitely not be missed. Watching the sunrise over Ahu Tongariki is stunning, and the heads at the quarry site Rano Raraku are incredible. It’s impossible to comprehend how the stone was chiselled by hand to make these sculptures not to mention moving them around the island without any machinery. Much of the Island is protected and as such its been awarded a UNESCO World Heritage Site designation.

In addition to the Moai, there is a wealth of cultural history to explore as well as extinct volcanoes, lava tunnels and caves. You can hike to some of the most secluded parts, which few tourists do. The island’s highest point, Terevaka, was deserted when I was there, and it was a moving experience to sit and reflect on a life well-lived. The three-hour hike to the eastern rim of Rano Kau crater is also worth it, as I got some fantastic photos, and there was not another person in sight.

#24 – Galapagos Islands, Ecuador

30 After 30 Travel Destinations - Galapagos Islands

The Galapagos Islands are a great destination for travellers that are over thirty because frankly, travellers under thirty probably can’t afford to do it justice!

As most are aware, the Galapagos Islands boast stunning wildlife that you won’t see anywhere else on earth, both on the surface as well as underwater. Unique birdlife, tortoises, and iguanas are a marvel to see on land and the Galapagos waters support a huge variety of sea life including sharks, whales, sea lions, and numerous endemic species of fish.

To make the most of your time visiting the Galapagos Islands you’ll end up spending much of your time doing tours or scuba diving, both of which can easily cost hundreds of dollars per day and would be a budget buster for the twenty-something traveller. There are some free sites to visit on land or snorkel at, but honestly they do not compare to the best tours where you can get up close to the unique wildlife endemic to the Galapagos Islands. Whether you’re following a land based itinerary or visiting on a cruise ship, the Galapagos islands will be remembered as a trip of a lifetime… but save it for your thirties, forties or fifties, when you can truly enjoy it!

30 After 30 Travel Destinations in Africa

Africa is a top choice for older and/or more experienced travelers for a number of reasons, the least of which is that having a decade or two of independent travel experience in your pocket helps you feel confident when you face the (very expected) unexpected along the way.  If you’re in your thirties, forties or fifties (or older, though Google tells me that would put you in the 0.1% of all my readers!), why not channel your wisdom, patience and expertise into an African getaway?

#25 – Kenya

30 After 30 Travel Destinations - Kenya Safari

Most travelers interested in African safaris have Kenya near the top of their bucket list. And for good reason: Kenya’s wildlife ranks among the densest in the world (tenth, to be exact). The country is home to countless animals , including Africa’s famed Big Five (lions, leopards, rhinoceros, elephants, and Cape buffalo), more than 400 other mammals species and around 1,100 bird species.

Of course taking an African safari isn’t cheap, especially when it’s as luxurious as the one I took my family on last year to celebrate my 50th birthday. The three weeks we spent exploring Nairobi National Park, Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Lewa Conservancy, Meru National Park, and the conservancies of the Maasai Mara led to an abundance of incredible experiences. From a behind-the-scenes tour to meet the baby elephants of the Sheldrick Wildlife Orphanage to walking with the last two Northern white rhinos on the planet at Ol Pejeta, our time with Gamewatchers Safaris and Cheli & Peacock Safaris was full of memories we’ll never forget. It also made us more conscious than ever of the fragility of life on this planet, and more determined than ever to do our part to protect these beautiful creatures.

#26 – Uganda

30 After 30 - Travel Destination Uganda

I travelled a lot in Africa in my 30s, including climbing Kilimanjaro and visiting South Africa and Namibia, but the country that stole my heart is Uganda.

Uganda may not be an obvious big-hitter like Kenya or Tanzania in terms of wildlife, and it’s not as exotic-sounding as Mozambique or Ethiopia, but don’t let that fool you. Uganda has it all: national parks teeming with lions, elephants and zebras; tangled forests hiding chimpanzees and the elusive mountain gorillas; rolling landscapes so green it’ll hurt your eyes; the frothing rapids of the River Nile and the calm waters of Lake Victoria; and some of the most friendly and welcoming people I’ve met anywhere in 22 years of travelling and 65 countries.

Travelling in Uganda can be done cheaply – but some of the country’s best experiences do come at a price. The number one draw – trekking to see the endangered mountain gorillas – costs a hefty $600 per person, but that’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience it’d be a shame to have to miss. Getting around by public transport requires a lot of time and patience – but if you can afford to, a private car and driver turns a chore into a pleasure. And if you have a bit more disposable income then staying in one of Uganda’s many luxury lodges is one of life’s greatest pleasures. All good reasons to visit when you can afford to splash out and make the most of this stunning country.

#27 – Cape Town, South Africa

Thirty After Thirty - Travel to Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town is a great travel destination for travelers older than thirty given its history, culture, cuisine and many family-friendly activities. While Cape Town can be visited by younger travelers, travelers over thirty will have a deeper understanding and appreciation of its history and its changes in recent decades. Many travelers may have even lived through historical moments of Cape Town years back, seeing those events on the evening news and reading about them in the papers.

There are many museums in Cape Town (such as Robben Island and District 6 Museum) that may be greatly appreciated by older travelers. In addition to its history, Cape Town is known for its wine and cuisine. Travelers over thirty may be more interested in fine dining and have more means to try different restaurants and wineries. Some of the best restaurants in Africa are located in Cape Town and they are definitely worth a visit. Cape Town is also great for family friendly activities such as the cable car to Table Mountain, a visit to Cape of Good Hope, seeing the penguins, etc. These activities appeal to travelers over thirty… especially those with kids.

Cape Town is best enjoyed by those that want a slower pace of travel and full appreciation of its history and cuisine.

30 After 30 Travel Destinations in Oceania

One of the most exotic regions on the planet, Oceania delivers in stunning landscapes (I mean, just look at French Polynesia!), breathtaking eco-adventures and yes, even a few cosmopolitan capitals!  Simply by nature of its distance from North America and Europe, Oceania can be a time-consuming and/or expensive getaway for many people, making it ideal for older travelers who have the freedom to move at a more comfortable pace.

#28 – French Polynesia

30 After 30 - French Polynesia

Of all the places I travelled to in my 30s, French Polynesia stands out. More than just Bora Bora, this archipelagic nation is comprised of sub-archipelagos – from the dreamy sand atolls of the Tuamotus, to the volcanic islands of the Marquesas, and the cultural heartland of the Society Islands, just to name three!

French Polynesia seemed to draw the more mature tourist, and it’s not difficult to see why. Even with an independent travel style, the remote location and inter-island travel would favour travellers with more means at their disposal. Yachts anchor in the lagoons of the major islands, as Tahiti had always been welcoming of seafarers. Advanced divers fly off to Rangiroa for its epic tidal channel dives. Surfers come for the break waves of Teahupo’o. Seekers of black pearl roam the Society Islands for the perfect specimen.

There is a carefree, earthy vibe to French Polynesia. Its iridescent nature makes you almost forget that it has depth too, in its Polynesian and colonial history. It is the kind of destination that is most rewarding for the seasoned traveller who carry with them Mutiny on the Bounty references, Gauguin, life, and joie de vivre. Breadfruit and vanilla, secluded stays on private motus. There is also an egalitarian, civilised amity between traveller and host here. French Polynesia is not easy to reach, but once there, so easy to stay for the idyllic days in paradise lagoons.

#29 – Sydney, Australia

30 After 30 Travel Destinations - Sydney, Australia

Sydney, Australia is a cool, all-round destination for all travelers and it is especially interesting for 30+ travel enthusiasts. This vibrant city has the right combination of urban delights and perfectly close nature getaways.

Right in the center of the city, you get to enjoy visiting the world-famous Opera House, chill out at Darling Harbour, enjoy a cool flick at the world’s largest IMAX (currently undergoing refurbishment, will open again late 2020) and fine-dining, all at the same spot.

There is so much to do in Sydney. For your nature fix, visit the gorgeous white sand beach at Bondi, cruise on Paramatta river, or picnic at the beautiful and vast Royal Botanical Gardens. Take a ferry to Watson’s Bay and visit Gap Bluff National Park here, or enjoy a delicious snack at Doyle’s on the Beach restaurant. If you still have the energy, take a trip to the Royal National Park at Bundeena and get lost in the majestic beauty at this spot where tall sandstone cliffs hug the ocean under deep blue sky and great wildlife around.

30 After 30 – Yes, Even on Antarctica!

Again, I’m not one for bucket lists, but if you’re always dreamed of exploring every continent on the planet, then you’ll want to head to Antarctica… and in this era of a rapidly changing climate, you’ll probably want to book your Antarctic excursion sooner rather than later.

#30 – Antarctica

30 After 30 Travel Destinations - Antarctica

Antarctica is on many travelers’ bucket list; however, it is quite expensive to visit. It takes an enormous amount of money to reach the continent. But if you can save the money, it is worth splurging for this expedition if you have the means to do so.

While researching for our trip, we discovered that the price range varies vastly. The low range for Antarctica travel is around $8,000-$10,000 for a ten-day cruise from Ushuaia, Argentina. That’s a lot of money to spend for ten days, considering that for same amount of money, you could traveling South East Asia for about a year! For the average traveler, this Antarctica adventure could take years to save for. And for most, it will only come after you start making “real money” in mid-career. When you get there and when you hop onto the ship, you will probably see travelers who are in their mid-forties and older. There likely won’t be many travelers younger than thirty on board.

Some of the highlights of our Antarctica adventure included running the Antarctica Marathon and cruising the Drake Passage. But the biggest draw is always the wildlife. You’ll experience close encounters with whales, seals, albatross, and more. And if you stand or sit still enough, you may get lucky when a curious penguin stops by to check you out!

Group Travel In Your 30s & 40s – what you need to know

by Steven Dillon | Feb 13, 2020

trips for 20 30 year olds

Hi, I’m Steve.

About two years ago I started a group travel company called Other Way Round .

I done it because –

  • I’d been on group trips before and experienced how amazing they could be
  • I felt there was a need for a more modern version of a group tour that better suited people in their 30s and 40s (I’m 38 btw).

I had never worked in travel before, I certainly was no group travel expert – I simply had a vision of the type of company I myself would like to exist and travel with.

To be honest it’s been one hell of a learning experience.

Yes – I was already a group travel fan – but by being able to observe things from the other side I’ve gained what I think are some really valuable insights.

Here’s some of the things I’ve learned.

(Read also: Why I Started a Group Travel Company for 30 Somethings )

1. There’s Definitely a Stigma, But it’s Changing

Many people have negative perceptions about group tours and see them as being too “touristy” or “unadventurous”.  At one extreme they imagine the type of coach tour their parents might do while at the other, some debaucherous 18-30 trip filled with drunken youngsters.  But I believe that many people of my generation (30s & 40s) are now warming up to the option that a group tour could be a great alternative to going it alone.  In fact, 70% of our customers had never been on a group tour before travelling with us (I find that kind of cool).

(Read also: 9 Myths About Group Tours in Your 30s and 40s )

2. Most People are Nervous About Who Else Will Be On the Trip

How old are they?  Where do they come from?  Are they male or female? How many people will there be?  You’d be amazed by how often we get asked these questions.  And it’s perfectly normal. Human nature I’d say. If you’re going to spend such an intense period with “strangers” you at least want to know that that you’re likely to have things in common. That’s why when we started Other Way Round we decided the focus would be group travel for people in their 30s and 40s.

3. The Group Pretty Much Always Gets Along

In fact (touch wood) we’ve never had a bad group. Actually, we’ve only ever had brilliant groups. I can say that with all honesty. The thing is, most people who travel on our group tours tend to be of a similar mindset. They may not have the same careers, hobbies or interests but when it comes down to it they usually have a similar philosophy on travel and that always helps to create a bond.

4. You Will Meet People You Would Normally Never Interact With

And that’s a good thing. I don’t know about you but most of my friends come from similar backgrounds and do the same things. On group tours you will meet people from every walk of life – people you would never normally interact with – and that really helps to open your mind.

5. These People Will Become Like Family. Your “Holiday Family”

Some may be lucky enough to meet “lifelong friends” while for others it will just be a great bunch of people to share an amazing experience in that particular moment of your life. You will laugh with them, sometimes even cry, have deep and meaningful conversations about life, and they will have your back like a longtime friend. They will become your “holiday family” and the intensity of the bond created in such a short space of time is something truly magical to experience.

6. Be Careful Not To Judge People Too Quickly

We’ve all done it. Someone joins the group and instantly you think – “this person is going to be a nightmare”. Almost always, this turns out not to be the case.

7. The Cultural Exchange is Multi-Faceted

We travel to some of the most exotic destinations in the world (including Colombia , Mexico and Peru ) and of course a big part of that is learning about the local culture. But sometimes the biggest cultural exchange is actually between the guests on the trip. The cross cultural banter (between the Brits and Americans for example) is often a highlight of the trip.

8. The Hassle-Free Factor is Real

Going in I believed that by far the  biggest value of a group trip  was the opportunity to meet and travel with other people. And while that’s definitely important, I’ve heard from many guests that the thing they really enjoyed most was not having to worry about planning and logistics. It was their first holiday ever where they’ve been able to simply turn up, relax and enjoy it. Everything was sorted for them and they could really have that break they were so looking forward to. Don’t underestimate how important this is (I no longer do)!

travelling with others in their 30s and 40s

9. There Will Be Louder People and Quieter People

And that’s ok. In fact it’s almost necessary to help bring a good balance to the group.

10. Girls Do It More Than Guys

I’m not quite sure why but it definitely seems to be the case. I personally have a theory about “male bravado” (in the same way that men very rarely go to group classes in a gym) but I have no idea if that’s actually true. What I would say to my fellow “blokes” out there is that group tours in your 30s and 40s really are a great option and you’re definitely missing out if you don’t consider it.  (p.s. the photo below is what happens when 9 guys do a Champeta dance class in Colombia)  😉

11. The Roommate Thing is Never as Big A Deal as it Seems

If you don’t already know, most group travel companies price their trips based on you sharing a twin room with another traveller (assuming you’re  travelling solo ). That can seem very daunting I know, but it’s almost never an issue. In fact you’ll be amazed at just how quickly you get used to it. Some roommates will get on like a house on fire and become “besties”. Others will simply co-exist and get on with it. Trips tend to be so busy that you don’t spend much time in the room and it’s normally a non-issue (and if it is something you really don’t want to do, usually there’s the option to pay more for a private room).

Still On The Fence? Here’s My Advice

So there you have it.

Two years in and that’s what I’ve learned about group travel for people in their 30s and 40s.

I genuinely am the biggest advocate of group tours (as you can probably tell) because I believe they are an amazing option for people who want to go on holiday but don’t have others to go with.

If you’re on the fence my advice would be to  give it a go .

There are so many awesome tour companies out there that you will definitely find something you love.

This British repair shop gave my 30-year-old flight jacket a new lease of life

I t might look like an innocuous leather jacket , but it’s an item of clothing that’s woven through the tapestry of my life’s events. The black Aero Leather Highwayman jacket I bought for the then-exorbitant sum of £350 in 1994 has been my wardrobe staple for almost 30 years. I wore it on my first date with my wife in 1995 and when the two of us drove away in my vintage Citroën DS the day after my sister’s wedding in 1997.

Professionally, it insulated me from the elements when I went up in an open-cockpit Tiger Moth biplane to recreate the first scheduled passenger flight – made in 1919 – from London to Paris. I’ve worn it in interviews with Hollywood stars and while reporting on the London riots, and it’s been to New York, London, Paris, Munich. Unlike the Brando-style biker jackets I’d favoured in my early 20s, it has a simple, classic look. As I entered my late 50s , I felt confident I could still wear it, and will do so for decades to come.

But time takes its toll, and last year it was clearly falling apart. The inside of the right sleeve had worn so badly in patches it resembled vintage lace. There were two jagged rips on the right bicep and a nasty tear along the shoulder. The lining, already partially replaced once, hung out of it in rags, and the zip, also already replaced, had come loose. Every time I wore it, something new seemed to sag, separate, or tear.

I couldn’t bear to bin it or give it away though, and I prefer to refurbish things rather than replace them; “make do and mend” might be trendy now, but it’s a sentiment the British have always abided by. A quick Google revealed that Aero Leather, founded in 1981, is still a thriving, Galashiels-based business. It churns out 2,500-3,000 jackets based on designs from the 1930s, 40s and 50s for the international retail market every year and also makes them for film and television productions. Empire of the Sun was their first onscreen foray, in 1987, but they’ve also supplied Bohemian Rhapsody , Captain America , The Dig , and made 40 flight jackets for the recent series Masters of the Air . Clearly, they’re the guys in the know. And more importantly, they did a roaring repairs service.

After an exchange of emails assessing the level of wear and tear, I packed my poor old jacket off to Denny and Holly Calder, son and daughter of the company founder Ken Calder, who still oversees the design of the leatherwear and Aero’s knitwear division. Time passed. Then more time. Denny told me the jacket was “shot”. The damage was “more serious than we had thought”.

Eventually, 10 months elapsed, and I feared it would never be repaired or – more likely – had disintegrated entirely when someone snipped the first exploratory stitch. Then, miracle of miracles, a cardboard box arrived and inside was my jacket looking… well, not new, but as if it had suffered five years’ hard wear rather than 30.

When I speak later on the phone to Denny, who “operates a sewing machine and sweeps the floor” on top of his managerial role, he explains Aero jackets are designed to be repaired. They don’t glue the leather so seams can be unpicked and they use wide-spaced stitches to minimise tearing. Most repairs just involve relining or replacing zips, though this was a rebuild.

“I had to use some techniques we’d never tried before,” Denny says. “The rips in the arm and shoulder were jagged and worn – one of them was like a bullet hole – so when I patched them inside, the edges didn’t match up. I went online and found some leather filler which I’d never used before and experimented on some scraps before trying it on your jacket, but I’m pleased with the results.” Indeed, the mends are invisible.

He had to remove and replace the threadbare panel of leather from the lower sleeve – “a last resort, as we try to keep things original” – then use dye and boot polish to bring the jacket back to a uniform colour. Both the front and the pocket zip were replaced from 1970s “deadstock” (warehouse remainders of items no longer made). Normally, they would use a jacket’s old lining as the template for a new one, but mine had been too badly shredded, and was also wrongly sized on the label. So the shell had to be painstakingly measured and a new Harris Tweed lining created.

The actual physical work on patching the shell took eight hours, plus several more for the patches and filler to dry; the lining had to be cut twice, taking a further two hours, then two more hours for a machinist to stitch it back together. All in all, that’s over five times as long as it would take to make a Highwayman from scratch. The repairs cost £350, the same as the original purchase price, but since a new Highwayman now costs around £900, I’m still ahead.

And a new jacket wouldn’t have the history of my old one, including past connections I only discover while talking to Denny. His father Ken made clothes for musicians including Elton John, David Bowie and Suzi Quatro from the 1960s onwards, and in the late 1970s founded a vintage clothing shop in Battersea before the idea of “vintage” even existed.

Calder bought bales of clothes from the United States, primarily to source Levi’s jeans. But some contained original Second World War American flying jackets which he would hang from the ceiling. As a teenager growing up in Wandsworth, I’d visit this shop and stare covetously at the war-distressed garments, many of them hand-painted with campaign symbols. It’s where my desire for a leather jacket began.

It’s also where Aero started. Calder had a customer who desperately wanted a flight jacket but the originals were too small (fighter pilots tend to be on the lithe side). So Calder studied how his second-hand stock had been made and created a bespoke version, which the owner wore for 30 years before donating it back to the company: it now hangs in their showroom. All the subsequent Aero jackets were copied from or inspired by classics.

As Denny explains, these are built for style rather than purpose, more likely to be worn by a passenger in a plane than a Top Gun F-14 pilot, though the disabled ex-marine Arthur Williams has worn an Aero jacket while flying planes for several Channel Four travel series. The biker-style ones don’t have elbow pads or built-in armour like modern motorcycle leathers, though they look good on a vintage BSA or Triumph. And it’s not just middle-aged men nursing fantasies of speed and freedom who buy them.

“We’ve got a lot of customers like yourself who bought one in the 1990s and are still wearing it,” Denny says. “But with Instagram we’re seeing a lot of interest from people in their 20s”

Today, Aero offers 100 different styles in 15 different cloths and leathers and 15 different lining options, ranging in price from £420 to £1,250. And if that’s too steep, they do a brisk trade in reselling used jackets they’ve been donated or received in part-exchange. Something to think about once I’ve had another 30 years’ wear out of my faithful old Highwayman.

35 Best Toys and Gifts for 4-Year-Old Boys 2024

These unique and unusual picks have something for every kid.

gifts for 4 year olds

We've been independently researching and testing products for over 120 years. If you buy through our links, we may earn a commission. Learn more about our review process.

" The best gifts at this age include construction toys that allow them to build and problem-solve — think about plastic interlocking blocks, gear toys, domino runs, magnet tiles and other similar choices," Parlakian says. "If your child already has wooden blocks, consider expanding the set with new block types like turrets, arches and cylinders to spark their building play. Pretend play props, like costumes, a tea set or construction tools encourage role-playing. With more control over their fine motor skills, art supplies like paints and brushes, markers and other similar items can also be a big hit. And finally, simple board games and activities like dominoes and memory cards are also fun for preschoolers."

The Good Housekeeping Institute has tested toys in all of these categories and more, looking for ones that are safe to use, will last stand up to rough play and — most importantly — won't annoy parents. Then they hand their favorites over to real 4-year-olds for the true test, making sure they are ones kids will go back to again and again. When the results came in, these were the best toys and gifts for 4-year-old boys in 2024, including current and former Good Housekeeping Best Toy Award winners.

Soundgarden hits no. 1 for the first time on a billboard chart with a 30-year-old song.

Soundgarden has been all but silent since the death of lead singer Chris Cornell in 2017. Since then, the remaining members of the group have performed together, but only on rare occasions. While they may not be releasing new music, the band does score an important No. 1 on a Billboard chart this week.

“Black Hole Sun” debuts on Billboard’s Hot Hard Rock Songs chart this week. The tune opens in first place on the ranking of the most-consumed tracks in the U.S. that the chart company classifies as hard rock.

Soundgarden earns their first No. 1 on the Hot Hard Rock Songs chart this frame. “Black Hole Sun” has turned out to be not only their initial leader on the ranking but their first placement overall.

“Black Hole Sun” may be new to the Hot Hard Rock Songs chart, but the tune itself isn’t new. Soundgarden released the cut back in 1994. It served as the third single from the band’s album Superunknown .

The tune surges in popularity decades after it was released thanks not to a special re-release or any anniversary celebrations, but an event that has nothing to do with the band. “Black Hole Sun” was one of a number of tracks that became streaming and sales wins last week thanks to renewed interest tied to the solar eclipse. Several cuts that related to eclipses and all things connected to the sun and moon soared on platforms like iTunes and Spotify on the day of the occurrence.

At Least 20 Dead In UAE And Oman After Record Rainfall Causes Severe Flooding

U.s. will impose new sanctions on iran’s drone program after attack on israel, singapore s ura accepts billionaire cousins low bids for housing sites.

On Monday (April 8), streams of “Black Hole Sun” exploded, especially when compared to the week before. The single gained by 123% when it came to streaming activity on sites like Amazon AMZN Music and Apple AAPL Music.

The Hot Hard Rock Songs chart was introduced after Soundgarden’s heyday, so it’s not entirely shocking that the band hasn’t produced many hits on that tally—or any, until now. The fact that they were able to hit No. 1 on their first try is impressive, and it speaks to the popularity of both “Black Hole Sun” and the group.

USA Hiking & Camping trips

USA National Parks offer some of the most spectacular scenery, hiking, and outdoor experiences in the world. Our trips aim to deliver true adventures in nature while keeping you safe and comfortable. You might find yourself learning to set up a tent, cook around a campfire, or better understand "Leave No Trace" principles while hiking in these beautiful national parks.

Under30Experiences Travel Gift Card

More about hiking and camping trips & tours, what's included on a hiking or camping trip.

Don't own camping gear? No worries, we provide tents, sleeping pads, and all cooking supplies needed to enjoy the campsite. Each trip also includes a trained guide to help you set up and be comfortable during your trip! Any national park entry fees and permits will be included. We do not provide sleeping bags or pillows. Please review your trip's exact itinerary for details.

Does every trip include camping?

No. Most USA National Park trips will include at least one night of camping, but some trips like Las Vegas to Zion Bryce Canyon does not include camping at all. All trips will include some hiking and plenty of outdoor time!

How should I pack for my trip?

As mentioned above, you will not need much camping gear but if your trip does include camping you should bring a sleeping bag and pillow. If you would like to shower at the campground, please bring a towel, shower shoes, quarters (depending on the campsite), and toiletries. We also highly recommend a day hiking backpack, water bottle, hiking shoes/boots, and a lightweight rain jacket. Each trip has more recommendations on the Trip Details pages. We also strongly recommend checking the weather report before leaving for your trip. Some locations are at high elevations and can be cool even in the summer months. If traveling in the spring or fall you may encounter a variety of weather during your trip as the seasons are changing.

What is the best time of year to go hiking or camping in a National Park?

This varies by the region you want to explore. Western mountain locations like Yosemite National Park are great in the summer months and into early fall. If you are looking for winter trips then you’ll want to focus on desert trips like Zion & Bryce Canyon National Park.   ‍ We only run trips during months that we believe are great for visitors based on the weather.  Some of our trips run off-peak so you can enjoy the park to yourself while still hoping to have decent weather.

Why sign up for a group hiking or camping trip?

Here are just a few of the reasons we see travelers join our group trips:

  • Not everyone owns camping gear or has set up a tent on their own. We provide all the essential equipment and assist with setup so you can enjoy your trip without any of the hassle!
  • A guide is with you throughout your camping trip to help with equipment, lead you on hikes and teach you about the area.
  • If you encounter any wildlife like bears or moose your guide will know what to do.
  • Meeting great people! When you join an Under30Experiences camping or hiking trip you know you will be with a group of like-minded people in your age range.

A 30-year-old Oswego County man was sentenced to 10 years in prison Wednesday for possession of child pornography.

Oswego County man pleads guilty to child pornography, facing up to 20 years in jail

Tyler Ager, 30, will serve 10 years in prison followed by 20 years of supervised release and will be required to register as a sex offender. During his change of plea hearing in December 2023, Ager admitted that in May and June 2023, he possessed child pornography on his phone and uploaded a child pornography file to a public website.

He also admitted that in April 2021, he was convicted of sexual abuse in the second degree in Parish Town Court for having a 4-year-old child touch his penis. He received a term of probation for his offense, which he was serving when he committed the offense for which he was sentenced Wednesday.

This case was investigated by the FBI Mid-State Child Exploitation Task Force, comprised of FBI Special Agents and Investigators of the New York State Police, Bureau of Criminal Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael D. Gadarian is prosecuting the case as part of Project Safe Childhood.

See the Boston Marathon 2024 results for winners, times and more details

By Matt Geagan

Updated on: April 15, 2024 / 3:31 PM EDT / CBS Boston

BOSTON -- While it will take most runners all day to complete the 2024 Boston Marathon , the winners of the race have already crossed the finish line on Boylston Street. Monday saw a few repeat winners, along with a few newcomers breaking the tape before anyone else.

Hellen Obiri wins Boston Marathon women's race

Boston Marathon

Hellen Obiri of Kenya broke away late to claim her second straight Boston Marathon women's race, breaking the tape with a finish time of 2:22:37. She is the first back-to-back winner since Catherine Ndereba of Kenya won two straight women's races in 2004 and 2005.

What was a pack of 20 was down to just two for the final miles on Monday, as Obiri and Sharon Lokedi ran alongside each other as the crowd cheering them on. But Obiri kicked things into high gear in the final stretch, and now has another Boston victory to her name. Obiri also won the 2023 New York City Marathon.

Lokedi finished second at 2:22:45 while Edna Kiplagat placed third at 2:23:21 to give Kenya the top three spots in the women's race. Buze Diriba and Senbere Teferi (both from Ethiopia) each finished at 2:24:04 to round out the top five in the women's race.

Minnesota's Emma Bates was the first American woman to cross the finish line on Monday, finishing in 2:27:14. Sara Hall was next a 2:27:48 (two minutes behind her finish in Boston last year), while 2018 champ Des Linden finished in 2:28:27.

Sisay Lemma wins Boston Marathon men's race

Boston Marathon

Sisay Lemma of Ethiopia didn't finish the last time he ran Boston in 2022. On Monday, there was very little doubt he'd be the first man across the finish line.

The 33-year-old led wire-to-wire and broke the tape with a time of 2:06:17 -- the 10th fastest time in Boston history. Lemma measured his lead in minutes for most of the race, though his edge was trimmed to a minute in the final miles. But no one was catching Lemma, whose previous best in Boston was 30th place in 2019.

Mohamed Esa (also of Ethiopia) was second across the finish line at 2:06:58, while defending champ Evans Chebet was not far behind at 2:07:22. Kenyans John Korir (2:07:40) and Albert Korir (2:07:47) rounded out the top five.

C.J. Albertson was the top American finisher at 2:09:53, and placed seventh overall for his best finish in Boston. He finished 10th in 2021, 13th in 2022, and 12th in last year's race.

Eden Rainbow-Cooper wins Boston Marathon women's wheelchair race

Boston Marathon

A newcomer took home the women's wheelchair crown, as Eden Rainbow-Cooper became the first woman from Great Britain to win the wheelchair division of the Boston Marathon. The 22-year-old finished Monday with a time of 1:35:11 to claim the first World Marathon major win of her career.

Four-time champ Manuela Schar made a push and cut Rainbow-Cooper's lead to 30 seconds at one point, but the Portsmouth, England native pulled away late. There was no one in her rear-view mirror when she took the left turn onto Boylston.

Rainbow-Cooper also won the Boston 5K on Saturday. He didn't have a sponsor for Monday's race, but that is likely going to change after her victory.

Schar came in second on Monday with a 1:36:41 finish, followed by Madison De Rozario (1:39:20), Patricia Eachus (1:40:22), and Aline Dos Santos Rocha (1:41:47).

Michelle Wheeler was the top American finisher in the women's wheelchair race at 1:45:59.

Marcel Hug wins Boston Marathon men's wheelchair race and sets another course record

128th Boston Marathon

Another year, another men's wheelchair crown for Switzerland's Marcel Hug. "The Silver Bullet" collected his seventh Boston win on Monday, and once again broke his own course record.

Actually, he didn't just break the record, he shattered it with a 1:15:33 finish. He broke his own course record last year as well with a 1:17:06 finish.

He repeated as a record-smashing champ despite crashing into the wall as he turned onto Comm Ave in Newton. But not even that collision could slow Hug down on Monday, and for the second straight year finished way ahead of the competition. Maryland's Daniel Romanchuk finished second with a time of 1:20:37, followed by David Weir (1:22:12), Sho Wantanabe (1:26:10), and Joshua Cassidy (1:26:15).

Romanchuk was the top American finisher, followed by Aaron Pike (1:28:35) and Evan Cornell (1:30:31).

Who won the Boston Marathon in 2023?

The 127th Boston Marathon saw another sweep by Kenya, with Evans Chebet and Hellen Obiri winning the men's and women's races, respectively.

Chebet won his second straight Boston Marathon with a finish time of 2:05:54 -- good for the third-fastest winning time in the race's history. It was also nearly a minute faster than his victory in 2022. Chebet was Boston Marathon winner to repeat since Robert Cheruiyot won three straight from 2006-2008.

Obiri was actually a late entry into the 2023 Boston Marathon, and had only run marathon before tackling Boston: The New York City Marathon a few months prior. She won with a finish time of 2:21:38, good for the fourth-fastest winning time in race history.

In the men's wheelchair race, well we already told you all about Hug. But he won his sixth Boston Marathon last year when he beat out American Daniel Romanchuk by over 10 minutes.

Susannah Scaroni won the women's race in 1:41:45 despite having to deal with a loose wheel near the 15K mark. It was her first win in Boston and her third-fastest time on the course in her nine races.

What is the fastest anyone has ever run the Boston Marathon?

Geoffrey Mutai holds the record for the best time at the Boston Marathon, completing the 2011 men's race in just 2:03:02.

Ethiopia's Buzunesh Deba holds the record in the women's race, completing the 2014 Boston Marathon in 2:19:59. The record previously belonged to Rita Jeptoo of Kenya and her 2:18:57 finish in 2014, but Deba was declared the winner in 2016 when Jeptoo was stripped of her title because of doping.

In the wheelchair race, you just read about Hug and his record-setting performance on Monday. Manuela Schar owns the record in the women's race at 1:28:17 (2017).

Do Boston Marathon winners get a prize for winning?

Winners do get a nice chunk of change, with the winners of the men's and women's races receiving $150,000 each. Second place finishers will take home $75,000, while third-place finishers will get $40,000.

In the wheelchair division, the top winners will receive $40,000, while second and third place will take home $25,000 and $12,000, respectively.
