How to apply for a Vietnamese visa on a UK passport

UK passport holders who want to extend their stay in Vietnam longer than 15 days and overseas British nationals must obtain a visa to enter Vietnam by applying for a Vietnam e-visa, a visa on arrival, and at the Embassy in the UK.

UK residents can apply for both single-entry and multiple-entry Vietnam visas in person at the local embassy of Vietnam on London. Those visas can be used for various purposes including tourism, business, and study. To apply for a visa at the Embassy, you need to follow the steps below:

  • Fill out the visa application form provided in person or on the embassy’s official website.
  • A passport-sized photo and a copy of your UK passport with validity for at least 6 months beyond the arrival date in Vietnam.
  • Pay the visa fee.
  • Additional supporting documents may be required depending on the purpose of the visit, such as a letter of invitation from a Vietnamese sponsor or proof of travel arrangements.
  • Submit the completed application and wait for the visa processed.

UK British passports are eligible for a Vietnam e-visa that is valid for a single entry at 33 international borders with a maximum of 30 days. The application process involves the following steps and documents:

  • Go to the official Vietnam e-visa website: https://evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn .
  • Click on “personally apply for E-visa” and then complete the online application form.
  • Upload valid UK passport details, a required passport-sized photo, and a scanned copy of the biographical page of your passport.
  • Pay the e-visa fee (25 USD ~ 20.53 pounds).
  • Receive your registration code, save the number, and present it upon arrival at Vietnam borders or international airports.

UK passport holders entering Vietnam by air can get a visa on arrival. This type of visa requires a visa approval letter in advance. Here are the step-by-step guide:

  • Apply online for an pre-approved visa letter.
  • Fill out the online application form with personal information, passport details, and travel plans.
  • Pay the service fee.
  • Wait for the visa approval letter to be issued within about  2-3 working days.

@Scott, In 2020, the 30-day gap regulation between two entries was removed, which means that you can now leave and immediately return for another visa-free entry without waiting for 30 days.

I will be travelling to Hanoi on 22nd April, do I require visa for Vietnam Hanoi? I am only staying for 8 days.

@Minesh, As a UK passport holder, you are not required to obtain a visa for visits up to 15 days in Vietnam. Therefore, if your stay in Vietnam is only 8 days, you do not need to apply for a visa.

Could you please help me and verify that I would be eligible for a 6 month tourist (non working visa) to Vietnam based in Da Nang. I am currently living in Thailand on a retirement visa but my partner has a new job in Vietnam (12 month contract) and obviously I will join them. It is not possible for 12 months correct?

@Mike Worth, Currently, there are no tourist visas available for a duration of 6 months or 1 year. The maximum length of stay that one can apply for is a 3-month visa.

I am a holder of Uk Passport and will be visiting Vietnam in July for 18 days. I understand I am eligible to stay there for 15 days only, would I need to apply for tourist visa to stay few days longer?

@Tanya, For stays exceeding 15 days, a visa is required to enter Vietnam. Thus, we recommend that you apply for a visa prior to your departure.

I have a question about Vietnam visa, before I apply on your site! I have a United Kingdom passport and I am travelling from Phnom Penh to ho chi minh city by bus. I will be in Vietnam for less than 15 days, and I know with United Kingdom passport you get 15 day free. I just wanted to check, does this still work going by bus through land border for visa on arrival or only flying?

Vietnam Visa for Citizens of United Kingdom

Vietnam Visa for Citizens of the United Kingdom is a crucial aspect to consider before planning your visit to Vietnam. It is essential for British travelers to verify the visa requirements and ensure they possess a valid visa, as failure to do so may result in denied boarding. On this page, you will find detailed information about the visa requirements and the process to obtain a Vietnam visa for citizens of the United Kingdom.

Do British need a visa for Vietnam?

British passport holders can enter Vietnam without a visa, benefiting from a visa exemption. However, this exemption allows for a stay of only 15 days. If you plan to stay longer in Vietnam, it is recommended to apply for a Vietnam visa. This will allow you to extend your stay beyond the initial 15 days and enjoy your time in the country without any limitations.

How can Citizens of United Kingdom apply for a Vietnam visa?

British passport holders have two options for entering Vietnam. The first option is a visa-free entry, which allows for a maximum stay of 15 days. The second option is to apply for an e-visa, which grants a 30-day stay in Vietnam.

Visa free entry – maximum 15 days

Citizens of the United Kingdom, excluding those holding British National (Overseas) passports, can enjoy visa-free entry into Vietnam. This means that they can enter the country without obtaining a visa in advance. However, it’s important to note that the visa-free entry has a maximum duration of 15 days.

You can obtain a visa exemption certificate upon arrival at the airport by presenting a valid passport with at least two empty pages and a validity of at least six months.

E-Visa – maximum 30 days

If British citizens wish to extend their stay beyond the 15-day visa exemption, they have the option to apply for an e-visa online. The application can be completed directly on the official website of the Vietnamese immigration service , with a processing time of approximately 3 to 4 working days. It’s important to note that the immigration office is closed during official holidays and weekends, so it’s advisable to apply in advance to avoid any delays. The cost of the e-visa is 25 USD.

FAQ about Vietnam visas

No, British passport holders can enter Vietnam without a visa for a maximum stay of 15 days. However, this visa exemption does not apply to British National (Overseas) passport holders. If British citizens wish to stay longer than 15 days, they will need to apply for a visa before their trip or consider other visa options such as an e-visa or visa on arrival.

Can British citizens get a visa on arrival in Vietnam?

No, British citizens cannot get a visa on arrival in Vietnam. The visa on arrival service has been discontinued and replaced by the e-visa system. However, British passport holders can enjoy a 15-day visa exemption om arrival, which allows them to enter Vietnam without a visa for a short visit. If they plan to stay longer or for purposes other than tourism, they will need to apply for an appropriate visa in advance.

How can British citizens stay longer than 30 days in Vietnam?

To stay longer than 30 days in Vietnam, British citizens can choose to exit the country and re-enter on a new visa. Extending visas can be a complicated and costly process, making this option the most convenient and practical. By leaving Vietnam and obtaining a new visa before re-entry, British citizens can enjoy an extended stay without the need for complex visa extensions.

Vietnam E-Visa for UK Citizens: A Step-by-Step Guide to Application

  • Vietnam e-Visa Fee for UK Citizens: Everything You Need to Know
  • Vietnam e-visa requirements for UK citizens

As a UK citizen planning to travel to Vietnam, one of the first steps in your preparation is to apply for an e-visa. However, the process can be overwhelming and time-consuming, with no guarantee of approval. In this article, we will explore how you can increase your chances of success and expedite the application process to obtain your Vietnam e-visa promptly.

Are UK citizens Eligible for Vietnam e-Visa?

As of the recent government resolution number 127/NQ-CP, the Vietnam e-Visa is available to passport holders of all countries and territories, including the United Kingdom. This is a significant change from the previous rule, which limited the availability of the e-Visa to only 80 countries. Therefore, UK citizens are eligible to apply for a Vietnam e-Visa without any restrictions.

Understanding the Vietnam E-Visa Fee Options

When it comes to applying for a Vietnam e-visa, there are four different options available to UK citizens. Each option has its own fee structure and validity period:

1. Single-Entry E-Visa (30 days): The cost of a single-entry e-visa for UK citizens is US$25. With this visa, you can explore Vietnam for up to 30 days from the date of entry.

2. Multiple-Entry E-Visa (30 days): For those who plan to enter and exit Vietnam multiple times within a 30-day period, the multiple-entry e-visa is the ideal choice. This option also comes with a fee of US$50.

3. Single-Entry E-Visa (90 days): If you’re planning an extended stay in Vietnam, the single-entry e-visa with a validity of 90 days is perfect. It allows you to explore the country for up to 90 days from the date of entry, and the fee remains the same at US$25.

4. Multiple-Entry E-Visa (90 days): For travelers who anticipate frequent entries and exits within a 90-day period, the multiple-entry e-visa is available at a fee of US$50. This option provides the flexibility to explore Vietnam at your own pace.

Refund Policy from official website for Vietnam e-visa

It’s important to note that the e-visa fee mentioned above is non-refundable, regardless of whether your visa application is approved or denied. This policy applies to all applicants, including UK citizens. Therefore, it is essential to ensure that you meet all the requirements and submit accurate information when applying for your e-visa.

While the fees mentioned above are directly from the official government website, it’s worth noting that the cost may be higher if you choose to apply for your e-visa through an agency. These agencies offer additional services, such as expedited processing and assistance with the application process, which incur extra charges. However, applying through the official government website is typically the most cost-effective option.

Vietnam e-Visa Requirements for UK citizens:

To apply for a Vietnam e-Visa, UK citizens will need to fulfill the following requirements: 1. The second document you’ll need to upload is a copy of your passport’s data page. This page should include your photo, personal details, and ICAO lines. Ensure that the copy is legible and includes all the necessary information to avoid any delays in processing your e-visa.

Portrait Photo Requirements

To ensure that your portrait photo meets the requirements for the Vietnam e-visa application, keep the following guidelines in mind. Your photo should be:

  • A recent photo taken within the last six months.
  • A color photo with a white background.
  • Clear and in focus, with no shadows or reflections.
  • Your face should occupy 70-80% of the photo, with a neutral facial expression and both eyes open.

Processing Time for Vietnam E-visa

After submitting your application, you might be curious about how long it takes to receive your Vietnam e-visa. Typically, the processing time is around three business days. However, it’s essential to allow ample time for the application to be reviewed and processed, especially during peak travel seasons.

Everything You Need To Know About Vietnam Visa

vietnam-visa-image

Note: If you do not hold an official British citizen passport but have another type of British nationalities, such as British national (overseas), you need to apply for a regular visa before you plan your travel into Vietnam.

Important points to consider when applying for Vietnam visa

If your travel plans include several visits within a short span, you are advised to apply for a regular multiple entry visa (which is covered in the following sections).

This is because the evisa is currently valid for 1 entry only.

When your port of entry is Phu Quoc, note that here you can avail the facility of visa-free entry of up to 30 days. However, this is valid when your itinerary includes only stays in Phu Quoc. If you are visiting other places, you have to follow the visa requirements of the respective regions.

Hence, when you enter through Phu Quoc and plan to stay here for the entire duration, select the 30-day Phu Quoc visa waiver. If you plan to travel to other places, opt for the evisa facility. Communicate with the immigration official clearly so that he grants you the required exemption facility.

If you choose the 30-day Phu Quoc visa waiver and later change your plans and wish to travel to the Vietnamese mainland, you have to apply for a Vietnamese visa at the Phu Quoc Immigration Office. Again, when you have the 30-day waiver but travel to another nation and return to Vietnam, you can re-apply for an e-visa.

We know the above regulations can be confusing. If you have any additional doubts, you can call our helpline and discuss with us about your exact requirements. We shall guide you through the process.

Overall, British nationals have the following visa types available:

  • Regular visas obtained from the Vietnamese Embassy in London

If you have fixed travel plans, that exceeds 15 days but is limited for up to 30 days, you can apply for an e-visa. For this, you need to submit your application online. This is one of the fastest, easiest, and most comfortable methods since you can carry out the entire process electronically from any location.

All you need to do it fill out the application form online. The documents required to be submitted are a scanned copy of the biodata pages of your passport and a recent passport-size photograph. Once your visa is approved, you will receive a Visa Approval Letter issued by Vietnam Immigration Department through email.

Now, take a print out of the approval letter. Once you arrive at the visa landing counter in Vietnam, present this document to the immigration officer along with your original passport (with a minimum of 6 months validity and at least two blank pages), 2 passport-sized photos, the completed and signed visa application form, and stamping fee.

The official will tally your documents with the records on the system and stamp the visa on your passport.

Note: E-visa is applicable only at fixed entry/exit points in the country. You need to select this point when you fill up your application form.

The international airports where e-visa is allowed are

  • Ho Chi Minh City
  • Da Nang City
  • Nha Trang City
  • Hai Phong City
  • Phu Quoc Island
  • Any of the 13 international land border crossings.

Regular visas

When you do not have fixed travel plans or you are planning to stay in Vietnam for more than 30 days, you need to obtain a visa from the nearest Vietnamese embassy before you enter the country.

Regular tourist visa

Regular Vietnamese tourist visas can be applied at the embassy. They are available in either single entry or multiple entries. Both single entry and multiple entry visas come with validities of 30 and 90 days. You can apply for one as per your requirements.

For this, you will need a completed visa application form, a valid and original passport, and a passport-size photograph. You do not need an appointment to submit the application package.

Once your visa is processed, your stamped passport can be collected from the consular section of the embassy.

Regular business visa

Regular business visas, which are obtained from the embassy, also offer options of single and multiple entries. They arrive with validities of 30 and 90 days, just like tourist visas.

For this, apart from the passport, photograph, and visa application form, you need to submit an invitation letter, travel itinerary (onward/return tickets). As for the application process, it is similar to that for a tourist visa.

Diplomatic visa

If you hold a diplomatic or official passport and are based in the UK, you can get a visa on Gratis. For this, apart from the general documents (passport, photograph, and visa application form), you need to submit a Note Verbal or an official letter from the UK Foreign Office or diplomatic missions accredited to the UK.

Visa for official travel

In order to avail an official travel visa, you have to apply though the Embassy. For this purpose, you need to submit a completed application form, a passport, and a photograph. The specifications are the same as those for a tourist visa.

Along with the above documents, please attach a business cover letter from your employer in the UK, a proof of approval issued by the sponsor in Vietnam, and a Note Verbale specifying your purpose of travel and approved by the Vietnamese Embassy.

Once all the documents are in order, follow the same steps for visa application as outlined in the section for tourist visas.

Transit requirements

British nationals transiting visa Vietnamese airports are visa-exempt for a stay of up to 24 hours. However, for this, you must have a valid passport, hold proof of sufficient funds, own onward/return airline tickets, and possess all the documentation required for the next destination.

Vietnam entry requirements for British nationals who are spouses or children of Vietnamese nationals

If you are a British national and are the spouse or child of a Vietnamese resident, you can apply for a visa exemption certificate.

This certificate offers a validity of up to 5 years and you can use it to enter Vietnam multiple times, with each visit not exceeding 6 months.

You can apply for this document at your nearest Vietnamese Embassy or at the Immigration Department in Vietnam.

Restrictions at land borders

Do note that in Vietnam, there are several local crossing points shared by the borders of Cambodia and Laos. These crossing points are only meant to be used by citizens of Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam.

If you attempt to cross such locations, please confirm with the local authorities before travelling to the points.

Registration

After you arrive in Vietnam, you need to register your stay. If you are staying in a hotel, submit your passport at the check-in point and the staff shall register your stay with the local police.

Ensure that you collect your passport and do not use it as a means of renting a room.

Again, if you are planning to stay in private accommodation, you can take the help of your host to register yourself. Failing to abide by the rules can lead to a fine or penalty.

UK Emergency Travel Documents

UK Emergency Travel Documents (ETDs) are accepted by the Vietnamese government for entry, airside transit and exit from the country. Of course, you should apply for a visa before your travel plans.

However, in the case that you lose your passport, you can apply for an ETD at the Vietnam Immigration Department. However, before you exit Vietnam, you must apply for an exit visa. This process may take up to 5 working days.

Under any scenario, never overstay the period mentioned on your Vietnamese visa. If you do so and do not have the required permissions from authorities, you may be fined and your travel plans can be delayed.

For any doubts, you can always reach out to our 24x7 helpline or contact the Vietnamese Embassy in London.

When is the best time to visit Vietnam

Vietnam’s diverse climate due to its long coastline is something to be savoured, and there’s never a bad time to visit. The northern region has four distinct seasons, making it a great place to visit for those who love cooler temperatures and vibrant autumn colours. In the central region, there’s a tropical monsoon climate with high rainfall and frequent typhoons, so the best time to visit is during the dry season, from February to August. The south has a tropical climate with two seasons – rainy and dry, but it’s a year-round destination with pleasant temperatures and lots of sunshine. To sum up, Vietnam has something for everyone. Get ready for an exciting adventure to a beautiful Vietnam any time of the year! It’s up to you to bring your bathing suits, sunglasses, trekking shoes, and anything else you might need.

Getting around in Vietnam

There are plenty of transportation options for travellers, including domestic flights, trains, buses, and taxis. Domestic flights are ideal for long distances or when time is limited, while trains offer comfortable seating and scenic routes. Buses are the most common and cost-effective mode of transportation, while taxis are convenient for short distances if you use reputable companies.

To make the most of travelling within Vietnam, plan ahead, and be flexible with your itinerary to account for delays and unexpected changes. Another fun way to get around Vietnam is by trying popular app-based transportation services like Be, Grab, and Gojek which offer a variety of vehicles and trusted licensed drivers.

Accommodation

Vietnam has some amazing destinations that attract many tourists. The most popular ones are Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Halong Bay, and the beach towns of Da Nang and Nha Trang… These places offer a wide variety of accommodation options to suit different budgets and preferences. From luxurious resorts to charming homestays and budget-friendly guesthouses, there’s something for everyone. So, whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or both, Vietnam has got you covered with its amazing places to stay.

Food and Drinks

Vietnamese cuisine is a significant part of the country’s identity. Our food is fresh, flavourful, and healthy – a perfect combo that makes it a must-try when you’re in Vietnam. It’s not a joke that Vietnamese people take our food seriously, and so should you!

Traditional Vietnamese Cuisine

One of the great things about Vietnamese cuisine is how diverse it is! This is partly because of the country’s geography, which has allowed different regions to develop their own special dishes and flavours. So it’s impossible to define “traditional Vietnamese cuisine”. However, there are some common features such as rice being a beloved staple in Vietnam – you’ll find it served alongside just about every dish or using herbs and spices to add a significant taste to dishes.

Popular Dishes to Try

Pho and Banh Mi are the most popular Vietnamese dishes, and they’re everywhere. You’ll find hundreds of different types of rice noodles and Banh Mi with different fillings in different regions of the country. For seafood lovers, Vietnam won’t disappoint you.

Vietnamese desserts are a treat for your taste buds! Che, a sweet dessert soup made with beans, coconut milk, and fruit, is a must-try. And if you’re feeling adventurous, consider indulging in a sweet treat flavoured with durian- a unique delicacy!

Best Places to Eat in Vietnam

Street food is our go-to when it comes to finding the best places to eat in Vietnam. It is known for its quality, affordability, and diverse flavours. You’ll find vendors serving up delicious dishes from carts and stalls all over the country.

If street food isn’t your thing, don’t worry. Restaurants and cafes are places which offer traditional Vietnamese cuisine in a more formal setting. Just ask the locals or check online reviews to find the best ones.

Safety and Security

Vietnam is generally a safe country to explore and enjoy, but taking some simple precautions can help ensure your safety and security while travelling. Petty theft and pickpocketing can happen in some big cities, so it’s important to keep an eye on your surroundings and belongings and avoid flaunting expensive jewellery or carrying too much cash. When using taxis or motorbikes, it’s a good idea to stick with reputable companies and agree on the fare upfront.

To have a worry-free trip in Vietnam, it’s also a good idea to be mindful of potential scams and avoid risky situations. Take care when using ATMs, as card skimming can be an issue. If offered drinks or food from strangers, it’s best to exercise caution, as drink spiking can happen in some areas. By keeping these simple tips in mind, you can stay safe and enjoy all the incredible experiences Vietnam offers!

Culture and Etiquette in Vietnam

Get ready to immerse yourself in the unique and diverse culture of Vietnam! This lovely country is heavily influenced by Confucianism, which teaches the values of respect, authority, and education. When you’re there, it can be helpful to keep a few local customs in mind to ensure a smooth trip. For example, make sure to dress modestly and remove your shoes before entering temples. Or while Vietnamese are one the friendliest people on earth, we don’t usually greet each other or strangers by hugging or kissing. Lastly, be mindful of the country’s history and sensitive topics like wars. By showing respect for these cultural do’s and don’ts, you’re sure to have an amazing trip to Vietnam!

However, t he US dollar and euro are widely accepted, and you can exchange money at airports, banks, or currency exchange centres throughout the country. If you’re in big cities, you’ll find ATMs readily available, but smaller towns may have limited options. To avoid any issues with using cards, it’s best to bring cash with you and exchange it upon arrival. While credit card usage is becoming more common, not all businesses in Vietnam accept credit or debit cards, especially street vendors.
