Bergen cruise port

Region Baltic - Norwegian Fjords - Russia

Local Time 2024-04-12 19:11

Port Bergen cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Bergen, Norway. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Bergen Havn is Norway's second-biggest port city (after the country's capital Oslo ). However, by shipping traffic, Bergen is ranked Norway's largest cruise port and the gateway to the Norwegian Fjords. Located along Byfjord, this is a charming old town surrounded by forested peaks and centered around its large harbor with thriving fishing and cruising industries. The city's population is around 280,000.

IMPORTANT : Since June 24, 2022, Bergen Havn has a cruise ship limit of 4 vessels and max 8000 passengers (regardless of the vessels' number) per day. For the 4th vessel is mandatory to use shore power. By the year 2026, all cruise ships visiting Bergen must be able to use shoreside power.

Port Bergen (locode NOBGO) is the port of registry of all Viking OCEAN ships (fleet) .

The Norwegian passenger shipping company FJORD LINE offers direct crossings between Bergen and Denmark ( Hirtshals ). The route Hirtshals- Stavanger - Bergen is operated year-round. FJORD LINE's schedule includes 1 daily crossing Bergen-Hirtshals (travel time 18 hours), 1 daily crossing Bergen-Stavanger (5,5 hours) and 1 daily crossing Bergen- Langesund (24 hours).

On March 1, 2018, MS Spitsbergen became Hurtigruten 's first vessel using Port Bergen's shore power. The technology allows the ship's diesel engines to be shut down during port stay/berthing, thus saving fuel and reducing emissions.

Bergen's old waterfront is lined with colored buildings and warehouses, housing boutiques, restaurants, and art galleries. Here travelers will also see the Fish Market at Torget displaying the catch of today.

The history of Bergen dates back to the early 11th century when Olav Kyrre founded a settlement and royal residence here. Bergen replaced Trondheim as the capital of Norway in 1240, and the city prospered under the guidance of the Hanseatic League. Very soon, these German merchants controlled all trade in Norway and remained in Bergen for centuries until 1764.

Today, much of the city's architecture reflects the lifestyle of Hanseatic merchants, who resided in tiny row houses close to the harbour. Bryggen is a collection of timbered Hanseatic houses from the 14th-16th century, restored and designated by UNESCO as a Heritage Site. Hanseatic Museum re-creates the living quarters of a merchant and his staff. King Haakon's Hall was built in the 13th Century, Rosenkranz Tower and Mariakirken in the 12th century. Theta Museum honours local Nazi resistance group from WW2.

Tourists can enjoy shopping or travel up Floibanen funicular railway for views over Bergen city and the surrounding area. Outside the town, a must-see is the Fantoft Stave Church (1050) and Troldhaugen beside Norgas Lake - home of Edvard Grieg and now a park and a museum. On the Nordnes Peninsula is Old Bergen Museum, an open-air collection of 18th-19th century houses.

In October 2017, Port Bergen announced a new policy to limit the cruise ship calls per day to 4 vessels (max 9000 passengers) in order to avoid occasional congestion during summer months. All the Port's existing ship bookings were honored. For the season 2017, the cruise port handled 325 ship calls and 0,51+ million tourists (490,546 in 2016).

In 2018 were handled 342 cruise ship calls (including 28x turnarounds and 15x inaugurals) and 653,110 tourists. On December 4, 2018, the state-owned Enova SF granted NOK 50 million (USD 5,9M / 5,17M) funding as investment support to Port bergen to build a shoreside-power facility dedicated to cruise ships. The project's total cost was estimated to ~NOK 120 million (USD 14,16M / EUR 12,4M).

Enova SF is a Norwegian government enterprise promoting environmentally friendly productions and energy consumption. Shore-power technologies allow berthed ships to shut down their main engines and plug into the city's electrical grid, using hydroelectricity for all onboard services, thus reducing in-port noise and air pollution (exhaust emissions).

In September 2019, BKK Norway (Bergenshalvoens Kommunale Kraftselskapand) and Port Bergen announced their plan to establish a joint company for building Europe's largest onshore power supply facility, as well as the Port's shore-power supply facility for cruise vessels. The Bergen-based BKK is a power company owned by Statkraft AS (49,9%, state-owned hydropower company), Bergen municipality (37,8%) plus 16 other municipalities. BKK specializes in electricity production and distribution, with end-user sales by Fjordkraft (co-owned by BKK and Skagerak Energi). BKK's annual production is around 6,6 TWh. The electricity is produced at 29 hydropower plants in Norway.

Currently, shore power in Bergen Havn is available at 4 piers/quays (Bontelabo, Jekteviken, Skolten North, Skolten South) where 3 ships can be connected simultaneously. On 3-ship days, the 4th vessel is moored at Jekteviken. In 2022, at Bontelabo and Skolten were installed wastewater management facilities collecting blackwater (containing feces and urine) and greywater (from galleys/kitchens, baths, showers, lavatory sinks, laundry).

On March 27, 2021, Port Bergen and Plug Bergen (50/50 joint venture with Plug Holding /BKK-owned) completed 5 shoreside power connections (2 at Skolten Pier, 1 at Bontelabo Pier, 2 at Jekteviken Pier), with total capacity 48 MVA (Mega-Volt-Amp). In 2021, Plug Holding started building shoreside-power connections for cruise ships in the Norwegian ports Alesund (3 points) and Nordfjordeid (1 point).

During the post-COVID 2022 season, Port Bergen handled a total of 308 cruise ship calls and 364334 passengers (out of total ~4,3 million cruisers who visited Norway).

Fred Olsen fleet meet (port Bergen 2015)

For the first time ever, on July 28, 2015, all four Fred Olsen ships (the whole fleet) came together in Bergen. At the following YouTube video, you can also see an aerial view of the cruise port and the terminals.

The four vessels arrived at 8 am and left the port at 6 pm.

  • MS Balmoral was on an 8-night "Norwegian Fjords" cruise from Southampton UK (July 25). Arriving from Stavanger, it docked at Bontelabo Terminal.
  • MS Black Watch was on a 9-night "Cruising the Fjordland" cruise from Liverpool UK (July 23). Arriving from Flam, it docked at Skolten South Terminal.
  • MS Boudicca was on a 7-night "Glaciers, Fjords and Waterfalls of Norway" cruise from Newcastle UK (July 26). Arriving from Newcastle, it docked at Skolten North Terminal.
  • MS Braemar was on a 14-night "Falls, Fjords and Faroe Islands" cruise from Dover UK (July 18). Arriving from Akureyri Iceland, it docked at Festningskaien Terminal.

The day-long festivities in Bergen included quayside live music performances (marching drummers, singers, music bands), onboard entertainment (afternoon show, open deck party, live band music), onboard treasure hunt, "water cannon" send-off show as all Fred Olsen ships were leaving the port.

All four Fred Olsen ships visit Bergen every year since 1997. Following the "fleet meet" day, Balmoral continued to Flam, both Black Watch and Braemar to Eidfjord, Boudicca - to Alesund.

Bergen cruise terminal

Most cruise ships in Bergen Havn dock at the Skolten cruise port (Vagen Harbor). From here it is a 5-min walking distance (along the waterfront) to the Bryggen (aka Tyskebryggen) docking area.

Larger cruise ships often dock at Dokken port, located to the west of the Fish Market (large outdoor market selling seafood, fruits, and vegetables). Complimentary shuttle buses operate from Dokken Port to the city center (walking distance is around 20 min).

The following map of Port Bergen shows the cruise terminals and their berths locations, as well as the port's anchorage area. If all berths are occupied, the additional vessel is anchored there and its passengers are transported via tender boats.

Bergen is the southern turnaround port of the "Express Route" - Norway's Government subsidized "Norwegian Coastal Express". This is a regularly scheduled passenger and cargo shipping service in Norway. The "ferry and cruise" itinerary is between two turnaround ports - Bergen (southmost) and Kirkenes (northmost). It connects a total of 34 ports, which are Norwegian communities without any road or air access.

Since January 2021, Norway's coastal ferry service is operated by two companies - Hurtigruten (7 ships) and Havila Shipping (4 ships). The Norwegian Government's annual subsidy for the ferry service is around USD 100 million.

The list of all ports along the northbound "Norwegian Coastal Express" itinerary includes Bergen (turnaround port), Alesund , Floro , Geiranger (Stranda) , Maloy (Vagsoy) , Molde , Torvik (Heroy, Leinoya Island) , Kristiansund , Rorvik (Vikna) , Trondheim , Bodo , Bronnoysund (Bronnoy) , Nesna , Ornes (Meloy) , Sandnessjoen (Alstahaug) , Stamsund (Vestvagoy Island) , Svolvaer (Vagan, Austvagoya Island) , Trollfjorden (Hadsel) , Finnsnes (Lenvik) , Harstad (Hinnoya Island) , Risoyhamn (Andoy Island) , Skjervoy , Sortland (Langoya Island) , Stokmarknes (Hadseloya Island) , Tromso , Berlevag , Hammerfest , Honningsvag (Mageroya Island , Nordkapp / North Cape ), Kjollefjord (Lebesby) , Mehamn (Gamvik) , Oksfjord (Loppa) , Batsfjord , Vardo (Vardoya Island) ,  Kirkenes (turnaround port).

90 minutes Viking Ship Experience in Bergen Harbor

Dreggekaien, Bergen, Bergen

[email protected]

  • View in Map

Season : Summer

A truly interactive and authentic experience along Bergen's iconic waterfront. Take part in sailing Viking-style in this unique cruise from the heart of Bergen.

Tours are varied and educational in nature. We will begin our voyage from Bryggen in central Bergen and hoist sail as soon as possible. The route will be dictated by wind conditions, but regardless of the weather, guests are guaranteed an authentic and interactive sailing experience and the chance to absorb Bergen’s historic waterfront from a truly unique perspective. The tour includes fascinating insights into the Viking age, Norwegian history, and coast culture. Steer the ship, hoist the sail, and feel the serenity of gliding through the water in this centuries-old method of sailing. No rowing required!

The tour is guided in English and touches on viking ships and history, coast culture, and stories from Bergen.

The tour embarks and disembarks from Dreggekaien directly adjacent to Bryggen. Please arrive at the departure point at least 15 minutes before scheduled sailing time.

Embarking/disembarking the vessel may involve the use of a short ladder, so moderate physical ability is required for participation.

On board facilities:

There is a toilet facility aboard the vessel, but the space does not have standing headroom and some may find it’s use somewhat impractical. Guests are encouraged to utilize the public restrooms located directly on the pick-up quay before departure. Safety jacket available on board.

Weather conditions:

Temperatures are always cooler on the water and there is limited protection from rain and wind aboard the ship, so warm and waterproof clothing are recommended. Sailing will be canceled in the case of significantly adverse weather conditions.

Bring a camera and an enthusiasm for new experiences!

Bergen is a destination that should be on the itinerary of each cruise through Norway due to its alluring setting in the middle of Fjord Norway. Around 330 cruise ships make port visits in Bergen each year, bringing in a total of more than 600,000 cruise passengers. Cruise passengers frequently stop at Bergen on their way to or from the Norwegian fjords. Skolten Cruise Port, also known as Vagen Harbor, is where smaller cruise ships dock when they arrive in Bergen, whereas Dokken Port, located next to the Fish Market, is where the larger cruise ships land.

Bergen, Norway

Bergen, Norway

The Bergen Card is available for either 24 or 48 hours and grants the holder free rides on the city’s buses and Bybanen (Bergen’s light railway) as well as free or subsidized admission to a wide variety of museums and attractions. Beginning your exploration of Bergen’s rich cultural scene with a stroll around the city’s ancient Bryggen neighborhood is a great way to get started. This section of the town runs parallel to the harbor and was a major center of trade back in the 17th century. These days, it is filled with plenty of quaint museums and cafes, and it is famous for the brilliantly colored buildings that line its streets.

Aside from that, the Bergen Art Museum is home to some of the most impressive works of art in the entirety of Norway, and the Buergen Kunst Museum features artworks by the likes of Picasso, Munch, and Miro, in addition to a large number of works by local artists.

Bergen’s Seven Mountains

The Seven Mountains, which surround the city of Bergen, hold a special place in local lore and are a symbol of the region’s reverence for nature. Hiking in the varying mountainous and forested terrain that surrounds Bergen is a popular pastime. The mountains provide not just wide hiking pathways for people of varying levels of fitness but also breathtaking views of the city and its surroundings. You can choose from a variety of activities, from a casual 15-minute stroll in the sun to more challenging ones like day hikes and steep inclines. There are many more than seven mountains in the Bergen area, but these are the ones most often thought of as the “official seven.” They are: Ulriken, Flyen (sometimes called Flyfjellet), Lvstakken, Damsgrdsfjellet, Sandviksfjellet, Lyderhorn, and Rundemanen.

If you don’t feel like making the ascent on foot, you can always take the cable car from the city center up to the peak. The most popular peak is Mount Fyen, which can be reached from the city via the Flibanen Funicular, though the fitter among us are more likely to choose the 40-minute hike. From the top, you can see the fjords and the shoreline as you make your way to the other mountains, such as Mount Rundemanen and Mount Ulriken. The Ulriken cable car is conveniently accessible via regular bus service and the seasonal sightseeing bus.

Norwegian Fjords, Baltic and Scandinavia cruise from Bergen

No matter which route you choose to take on your cruise through Northern Europe, you will see recognizable sites and scenery along the way. There are a variety of fascinating cruises available around Northern Europe that are suitable for almost any traveler. Find cruises to destinations such as Norway’s Fjords, the Baltic Sea, and Scandinavia that depart from the cruise terminal in Bergen and choose the best itinerary.

Norway and Norwegian Fjords

Bergen is also a great place to start a cruise up Norway’s west coast toward the North Cape to the land of midnight sun and majestic Northern lights . Those embarking on cruises from Bergen can visit places like Stavanger , Haugesund , Olden , Flam , Alesund , Trondheim , Leknes , Eidfjord , Honningsvag , Kristiansand , Geiranger , Hellesylt , the Lofoten Islands , and many more. Most visitors come to see the fjords, two of which—the Geirangerfjord and the Nærøyfjord —are on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The longest fjord is Sognefjord , and the Hardangerfjord is well-known for its cherry and apple trees. Nordfjorden is the sixth-longest fjord in Norway, so it’s no surprise that it also attracts many cruise ships.

Denmark , Germany , Poland , Lithuania, Latvia , Estonia , Russia, Finland , and Sweden are the nine countries that are located on either side of the Baltic Sea. It is easy to arrange a cruise from Bergen with stop to any of the Baltic capitals, such as Helsinki , Tallinn , Riga , Stockholm , or St. Petersburg. There are also stops in Baltic Sea cities like Kiel , Warnemunde , Gdansk , Muuga , Klaipeda , and Visby . on routes that leave from Bergen.

Scandinavia

The term Scandinavia in local usage covers the three kingdoms of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. The cruise may make stops in many locations in Scandinavia, including Copenhagen, Aarhus , Skagen , Gothenburg , and Helsingborg .

viking cruise

when we landed in bergen we took the train to Oslo. 7.5 hour trip and it was worth every minute. the country side is breathtaking. the ride was very comfortable. I definitely recommend taking the time to do this!

We took the "Norway in a Nutshell" trip in late August 2019. It was a long day, but one of the most enjoyable in all of our travel experiences. Our trip was from Oslo to Bergen (you can do that in reverse) and included an early train from Oslo to Myrdal, a different train from Myrdal to Flam, a boat trip down the fjord from Flam to Gudvangen, a bus from Gudvangen to Voss, and finally a train from Voss to Bergen. With all these connections, there is a lot of room for error, but they have it worked out well and I think if one leg is late, they just wait. We did the trip through Fjord Tours, but I am sure you could buy the tickets yourself. Fjord Tours also offered a luggage portage (from our hotel in Oslo to our hotel in Bergen) which was very nice. To our way of thinking, this trip included some of the most beautiful and dramatic scenery we have ever seen. There are a couple of frustrations involved. On the train trip down the mountain from Myrdal to Flam, it is difficult to get a good picture taking seat because many people from the cruise ships in Flam ride the train up to Myrdal and then just stay on and ride the train down, thus getting the prime seats before the people waiting a Myrdal even get on the train. Just sit back and relax and forget about trying to get that perfect picture. The view is breathtaking. The other frustration may be when boarding the boat for the cruise on the fjord. There is a lot of jockeying for that perfect spot when people are getting on the boat, but our eperience was that within 10 minutes most folks had given up on those hard earned spots for one reason or another and there is ample opportunity for everyone on the boat to enjoy any and all parts of the boat and take literally hundreds of pictures. Again, just chill and enjoy. It was a great experience for us.

The train station is big and bustling but the trains always run on time. The train to Bergen crosses some dramatic terrain. Lots of mountains, valleys and evergreen trees. When you get to the plateau, the land becomes a wet moonscape of rocks, moss, and tumbling water; beautifully forbidding. Lots of tunnels. Often, you will enter a tunnel from a barren land of rocks and lichen and emerge in a lush valley of farms and evergreens.

Extraordinary changing scenery, fjords, snow, mountains, great views. Comfortable train. Best way to travel across Norway

We didn't have time to do the train/ferry route. We went straight to Bergen. Avoid rainy days! The lakes, falls, and mountains are gorgeous.

Six hours journey time seemed daunting, but flew by. We passed some awesome scenery, even a glacier at one point. Waterfalls got more and more frequent, as did tunnels and fast flowing rivers. I especially liked the remote coastal areas with isolated little houses scattered along the shoreline. We saw loads of snow barriers at what must be vulnerable sections of track during the winter months. Arriving at Bergen station felt like an event, with its high arched roof and cheery red train carriages on both sides of the platform. All it needed was a band. There was a sense of film set about it all.

5 BEST Fjord Cruises from Bergen, Norway [A Local’s Guide]

Psst! Some links in my posts may be affiliate links, which means that I get paid a fee if you chose to purchase something through it. This doesn't cost you anything, but makes a huge difference for me! Thanks for your support!

As the “gateway to the fjords”, there are many fjord cruises from Bergen to choose from . It can be a little overwhelming knowing which one is the right fit for you. But I’m here to help!

I have lived in Bergen for more than 7 years now, and grew up just a few hours from here (right by the fjords). As a result, I’m the perfect person to share the best fjord cruises leaving from Bergen!

In the past I have covered some of the great tours and excursions in Bergen , but the ones on this list are focused on just the fjords.

There are a few fjords within easy reach near Bergen, such as the Hardangerfjord, the Sognefjord (with its arms) and Osterfjorden. Some of these are amongst the best fjords in Norway , in my opinion.

Quick Bergen Travel Guide

Where to stay : Hotel Norge is a centrally located, higher-end hotel that is perfect for any traveler – and my favorite (their scrambled eggs at breakfast are the best in Norway). If you are looking for something in the historic city center, Clarion Havnekontoret is just a stone’s throw from the UNESCO-listed Bryggen. For something more budget-friendly, CityBox and Moxy are great alternatives!

Where to eat : I have so many favourite restaurants in Bergen, and have covered them all in this guide . Don’t miss Bryggeloftet (traditional, Norwegian), Poca Madre (Mexican), Boccone (Italian) and JAJA (International Street Food).

Top activities and tours in Bergen :

  • Mostraumen Fjord Cruise from Bergen (check out the best fjord cruises from Bergen in this guide )
  • Seeing the UNESCO listed Bryggen (on your own or on a walking tour )
  • Viking ship fjord cruise
  • Hiking or taking the funicular up Mount Fløyen
  • Going on a day trip to Flåm and the Nærøyfjord

Packing for Bergen : My golden rule when packing and dressing for any destination in Norway is layers. Layers, layers, layers – and Bergen is no different. Additionally, Bergen can be quite a rainy city, so a waterproof jacket such as this one is ideal. Good shoes for walking around the city is a must too (the city is very walkable).

Getting to Bergen : I have covered how to get from the airport to the city center in detail here .

Getting Around : Skyss is the official public transportation system in Bergen. Download the app Skyss Billett (ticket) to have tickets on your phone.

What is a fjord cruise?

In my Norway travel guide I have explained in detail what a fjord is, so I won’t spend too much time on that here. In short, a fjord is a body of water connected to the ocean , that was created by the glaciers of the last ice age.

There are over 1700 named fjords in Norway, which is quite insane to think about. It is not hard to understand why Norway is the official land of the fjords.

So, what is a fjord cruise ?

There are two types of fjord cruises. One type of fjord cruise is a large cruise ship going on a several days long trip along the Norwegian coastline and into the fjords. Cruise lines like P&O , Costa , MCS and Viking Cruises all have cruises to the Norwegian fjords.

However, the Bergen fjord cruises we are focusing on today are slightly different. They are also what most people think about when they hear the term.

A fjord cruise is a fancy name for a boat trip on the fjord . It has gotten its name because you are cruising silently on a fjord – and probably to make it sound a little more inviting than just “boat trip”.

But, basically, these are the Norwegian equivalent of the party boats in Punta Cana or the catamaran cruises in Cancun .

The cruises can take any shape or size, from large electric vessels to small, fast-paced ones. All though the latter is often called a “Fjord Safari” instead.

No matter where in Norway you go, you are likely to come across a fjord cruise. Whether that’s Flåm , Geiranger, Stavanger or even Oslo .

And of course Bergen. Which is the focus of this article.

a green mountain side to the left of the photos, with houses scattered in the hills. A body of water is seen to the left: this is the aurlandsfjord, reachable by fjord cruise from bergen.

5 Best Fjord Cruises from Bergen

With Bergen being the largest city in western Norway, and within easy reach of several of the best fjords, it’s only natural that there are loads of fjord cruises to choose from.

That being said, which one should you choose?

Below I have outlined the best fjord cruises from Bergen – and highlighted details about each of them. That way, you can decide which is the perfect one for you!

Going on a fjord cruise is one of the most popular things to do in Bergen , and an absolute must when you visit. All of these start from the docks in the center of Bergen, and are round trip cruises. Unless otherwise specified.

#1 Fjord Cruise Bergen to Mostraumen

The fjord cruise from Bergen to Mostraumen is amongst the most popular ones leaving from the city . This is mainly because it is the shortest and easiest way to see the fjords from Bergen.

If you are spending a day in Bergen and are short on time – and don’t have plans to travel from Bergen to Flåm – this is a good choice.

This 3-hour fjord cruise takes you from the Bergen docks through the Mostraumen strait. Along the way you will see the Osterfjord, one of the fjords closest to the city.

I will say, these fjords aren’t the most dramatic in the region, but it is the best option for anyone wanting to see the fjords from Bergen in a day (and don’t have a rental car).

You’ll stay nice and warm inside the boat, which departs year-round. This fjord cruise is beautiful no matter what time of year you visit.

There is also a private option available for this tour, which might be a little pricy for most, but perfect for groups of friends and families.

  • Duration : 3-4 hours
  • Fjords : Osterfjord
  • Max travellers : 85
  • Advance booking needed : Yes

#2 Sognefjord Cruise from Bergen

The Sognefjord is known as the “king of the fjords”, and with good reason. It is the longest fjord in the world (with the exception of one in Greenland that is frozen – so it doesn’t count, in my opinion). It is also the deepest.

In addition to this, it has some pretty famous fjord arms. Fjord arms are basically smaller fjords that “stick out” of the bigger fjord.

If you imagine your arm and hand being the main fjord (i.e. the Sognefjord in this case), your fingers would be the fjord arms. This is how I usually explain the fjords and fjord arms when I guide for Adventures by Disney (I work as a Disney Adventure Guide in Norway every summer, and it’s the best job in the world, after travel blogging!).

At the end of the Sognefjord you will find the Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord, both world heritage fjords and a world heritage site. The latter is listed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List together with the Geirangerfjord (further north).

This is also where I grew up (in Aurland)!

Therefore, traveling through the Sognefjord from Bergen is a great way to see the length of the world’s biggest fjord. However, it is a full-day trip – so expect to leave Bergen early (at 8 in the morning), and to get back late (around 9 in the evening).

This includes a 2-hour stop in Flåm. I recommend having lunch at the bakery and going on a stroll along the fjord during your time there.

Basically, this is a return ticket on the express boat from Bergen to Flåm. It runs only in the summer months. Many locals don’t consider it a fjord cruise, but a mode of transportation. But, as we established above, a fjord cruise is simply a boat on the fjord – so you’re good to go!

You can also consider getting a return ticket for the next day, and spend the night in Flåm! There are some great hotels in Flåm to choose from, and this would give you a chance to explore the village and region more. Note that accommodation is not included in the boat ticket.

  • Duration : 13 hours
  • Fjords : Sognefjord, Aurlandsfjord
  • Max travellers : 150
  • Cost : $244 (round trip) / $144 (one way)

#3 The Nærøyfjord Fjord Cruise (including train & bus)

As mentioned, the Nærøyfjord is a fjord arm of the Sognefjord and perhaps the most important destination for fjord tours near Bergen.

On this full day trip, you’ll get to not only experience a fjord cruise on the Nærøyfjord, but also the famous Flåm Railway (one of the world’s most scenic rail journeys).

Thus, this is not just a fjord cruise from Bergen, but a round trip excursion taking you from Bergen to the fjords and back using train, bus and cruise. The Oslo-Bergen railway is also included on this trip.

It is very similar to the Norway in a Nutshell tour , so it is possible to book each leg of the journey individually. If you have more than just a day, I also recommend looking at some of my itineraries , that take you from Bergen to the fjords for a night or two.

Sights along the way on this cruise not only include the Nærøyfjord, but also picturesque fjord villages, waterfalls and of course the Flåm Valley (where the Flåm Railway goes).

  • Duration : 10 hours
  • Fjords : Nærøyfjord, Aurlandsfjord
  • Max travellers : 99
  • Cost : from $308

The nærøyfjord can be seen on a fjord cruise from bergen. This photo was taken on a day with beautiful weather, and the skies are all blue. There are some waves on the fjord, and the sun is shining on a mountain to the right.

#4 Viking Ship Fjord Cruise

If you want a more unique, and exclusive experience, this might be the cruise for you.

Sailing on an authentic Viking ship with just 12 travellers on board is a great way to explore the harbour and sights outside of Bergen. Whilst it doesn’t take you far from the city, and thus not into any of the more dramatic fjords, this can still be worthwhile if you want to go off the beaten path.

During this 1,5-hour sailing you’ll be treated to a hot drink, and some lovely views of the city. Definitely a must for families or Viking enthusiasts!

If you consider yourself the latter, I hope you’ll head on over to read my guides to Nordic symbols and their meanings , Norse Goddesses and of course the most famous Vikings of all time !

  • Duration : 1,5 hours
  • Fjords : Bergen harbour, Puddefjorden
  • Max travellers : 12

#5 Private Fjord Cruises from Bergen

Last, but not least, going on a private Bergen fjord cruise might be more your style. These options are perfect for those traveling in a big group or with a rowdy family.

Or just for a couple wanting a truly exclusive experience on the fjords.

There are several options for private tours from Bergen, taking you through Osterfjorden by private yacht or in a fast-paced RIB boat.

Basically, you can choose your own adventure here, and since it’s just you onboard, you get the full attention of your captain and crew.

  • Duration : 4-11 hours (depending on what you book)
  • Max travellers : Private
  • Cost : from $500
  • BOOK PRIVATE RIB HERE / BOOK PRIVATE YACHT HERE

Of course, this list includes the 5 best fjord cruises departing (and ending) in Bergen. However, there are more to choose from. Below you’ll find more Bergen fjord tours to choose from, in case you wanted more options!

Where does Viking dock in Bergen?

I have a Northern Lights cruise booked for next year (if it goes) and was wondering where Viking ships tend to dock?  I've been in Bergen on other cruise lines - once docking about a mile or so from city center (large ship) and once right at the end of the old town harbor (small ship).  Just wondering before I look into booking a room for overnight since I want to stay an extra day after disembarking.

Right at the Bryggen waterfront.  Its a 5 minute walk from the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel or Thon Hotel Orion.  The Thon is the closest and we chose to stay there on our own pre cruise because it was quieter then the Radisson Blu where Viking puts up guests.  The location is fantastic.

USUALLY,  Viking docks here:

image.png.d96e0d7974122eb6b71aaa8ca4f2e677.png

But it has been known to dock at other places.

Here is a link to the Port of Bergen cruise call schedule: https://bergenhavn.no/en/cruise-en/call-schedules-cruise/

Two hotels in suitcase dragging distance of the dock are a Thon Hotel and a Radisson. Unfettered it takes about 15 minutes to walk from the ship to the Hanseatic Museum. Also, the Airport Flybussen has a stop on the Bryggen, not far from either hotel, from what I have been able to figure out on a map. Was hoping to see for myself this past June, but had a small change of plans and never got to Bergen.

Excellent Advice!

If the ship docks in its normal location, as per the comments above, another hotel choice to consider is the Thon Hotel Rosenkrantz.  It's just a little farther away from the dock than the Radisson or the Thon Orion, but still within easy walking distance, even dragging suitcases.  We stayed there before departing on our "In the Wake of the Vikings" transatlantic in September 2018, self-booked, because we got an excellent price on the room, including dinner the night before and breakfast the morning of check-out.

Flybussen last stop was at the Raddison from the airport.  You can use a card for payment.

Okay, there is an excuse for staying at the Radisson. Not only a short walk to the bus, but if your flight is later in the day, you can store your luggage at the hotel while you wander about a bit.

Thanks, everyone.  Exactly what I needed to know!

What was that?

What was that?

I do not see Viking Venus on the schedule for arrival on 13/14 February 2021 for our Northern Lights cruise (starting on 2 Feb at Tilbury). Rather, it looks like that spot is being held by Viking Star. Is that possibly SOP until a ship actually enters service?

Or am I just being nervous?

[Update] Maybe I'm not just being nervous - I searched for Venus and her first Bergen port call is listed as 29 May 2021.

So, it looks like your will be sailing on Viking Star, not Viking Venus.  A change of vessel is allowed under the terms of carriage*, so don't expect any recompense for the change. You should be getting some sort of notification from Viking, eventually. In the meantime, check MVJ to see if they made any changes there.

If you chose your dates because you wanted to sail on the new ship, then you should be looking at making some changes before the penalty phase begins (120 days prior to sailing) which means soon for your 1/26/21 departure. The exact dates should be spelled out in your Viking invoice.

That's what I was thinking. I tried Viking Chat but got nowhere: the agent responded " I've double checked my sources and your ship is Viking Venus ". I'll probably contact Viking Social for a more authoritative interpretation of the situation.

Other than the potential to find ourselves boarding the oldest Viking Ocean ship, rather than the newest , our decision to board in Barcelona was predicated on being on the "maiden voyage" of Venus. I would not have considered adding the Iberian Explorer to our booking otherwise.

Of course, the feeling among our party is that these cruises are not at all likely to sail, so what am I worrying about?

Yes, the website still says Venus so that is the only info that the Chat people probably have access to. But, somehow, I like the vibe coming from the Bergen harbor master.  I think Viking Social (aka, TellUs) are the people to connect with, especially if you all want to sail on the maiden.

I checked Barcelona but they are not publish a schedule of cruise calls because of Covid. When they do start publishing, http://www.portdebarcelona.cat/en/web/port-del-ciudada/cruceros

Cartagena shows nothing: https://www.puertocartagena.com/en/cruise-ship-terminal/cruise-ship-schedule

Malaga port schedule is not up to date: https://www.puertomalaga.com/en/cruise-forecast/

I sent the query and will post if any new information is forthcoming.

Thanks for the links - those are going right into my cruise file.

The other consideration is that the port lists are not 100% accurate. I checked Bergen for our June 2021 cruise on Star, noting an error in the dates.
