Viking Splash Tour

Time Out says

A thrilling, educational, and amphibious ride through the south of Dublin

The 75-minute Viking Splash Tour delivers an overview of many major city sights, like Trinity College, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and several government buildings. Guides also reveal what the city was like during Viking, Medieval, and Georgian periods with a nearly constant flow of historical information, local folklore, and wisecracks. Keep in mind you’ll be wearing a plastic Viking helmet and shouting to pedestrians during much of the drive. The tour’s true highlight, though, comes when your vehicle (a World War II DUKW) splashes into the water at the Grand Canal Docklands for the aquatic portion of the programme.

Time Out tip: The vehicle’s roof cover only reaches twenty of the twenty-eight seats, so choose your spot wisely in case of rain or sunburn. They do distribute rain ponchos on tours with inclement weather. Viking requests participants convene at the meeting point 15 minutes before their scheduled tour. That’s St. Stephen’s Green North, opposite the Dawson Street junction. You will be mocked if you’re the last one to show up.

Nearby: Peruke & Periwig: For creative cocktails and simple bar snacks in a gilded Victorian lounge Little Museum of Dublin: For an educational and entertaining look into Irish life in the twentieth century Sun Bear: For freshly made gelato with vegan flavour options

"Viking Splash Tours Dublin"

Viking Splash Tours

Viking Splash Tours Dublin have been entertaining and educating adults and kids alike, native and foreign for the last ten years with their unique fun tour of Dublin. For family sight- seeing with a difference, book yourself and your family a seat on the Viking Splash Tour.  You will see Dublin as you have never seen it before and be guided by a tour guide unlike any you are likely to have met before either.

You will be taken around Dublin, not on a bus but on an amphibious vehicle called a Dukw. A what? Yes a Dukw – Pronounced ‘duck’ it is an authentic World War Two American land to sea vehicle which was built by the General Motor Corporation. These Dukws played a huge role in landing Allied Troops on the Beaches of Normandy during the D Day landings. Originally there were approximately 22,000 of these work-horse vehicles in service with the American forces, but only a few hundred have survived ’til today. And you and your family could take a trip on one. Living history before you ever see Dublin at all.

Nowadays in Dublin these Dukws have been pressed into service as unique tour vehicles and for some reason are ‘piloted’ by Vikings. Hence the Viking Splash Tour.

Although the Viking Splash Tour is all about having a bit of fun as you tour the city, it is important to note that the vehicles are all licensed by the Dept of Marine and Transport and all guides and drivers are fully qualified and experienced.

The Duck’s captain, a trusty Viking, will be your guide as he runs commentary while you pass through those monumental structures. They have a wealth of knowledge about the city.

Something else is included in your ‘course modules’ are lessons about Medieval and Georgian Dublin. It was a fantastic day highly recommend.” Someone else said: “The children, 10 and 8, enjoyed the experience. The information given was excellent as was the guide”

My friends back home told me this was a must do when you are in Dublin. They we're so right. It was pouring rain but we didn't care because we had our ponchos and most importantly!! Our viking helmets. The guide was hilarious,he knew how to entertain the kids and us adults felt like kids, especially when we would scream out the occasional Viking roar at the people on the street. All in all, great family fun, would highly recommend.

TA-logo

A fantastic trip full of laughter and so much fun. Our tour guide/ driver Kevin should be on the stage. His ad-libbing was second to none and was interspersed with interesting facts. His talents know no bounds and made the trip even more enjoyable. Our children were with us so the jokes were kept tongue in cheek but just as hilarious. Kevin's interaction with the people on the streets was genius and there were some fantastic sports there too. I would highly recommend it to natives and tourists alike.

I've been to Dublin a few times before but we decided to embrace our tourist side and take this tour. I want to go back and do it all over again! We laughed the entire time and still find ourselves randomly chuckling remembering parts. Not the most educational tour but we did actually learn more than we did on several other trips throughout the country and had a WAY better time. Ask for one of the rides with Kevin! We wish he led all of our tours! Definitely book your tickets in advance, they often sell out.

Viking Splash Tours – Dublin’s most entertaining city tour by far

viking splash tour cost

The Viking Splash Tour turned out to be the best of all the tours by quite a bit. Much of the route was the same as the hop-on/hop-off bus tours, but of course one of the things that makes this one different is the tour is done in a vehicle called Duk, which is amphibious. It sounded like nothing but a gimmick until we actually drove into the Dublin Docklands, where the tour continued with even more interesting sights that aren’t visible by land, and a unique look at the whole place.

The only drawback to this is the Duk stops for 5 or 10 minutes before it can plunge in the water so some waiting helpers can attach some safety pontoons, which the tour guide said weren’t necessary anyway and only used for precautionary purposes. Everyone also has to don a life jacket, unfortunately, but the whole thing is well fun enough to make up for the small hassle.

Most expensive, but do it anyway

viking splash tour cost

It also surprised me how packed the Viking Splash Tour vehicle was, especially considering the buses never seemed too full. The Viking Tour only leaves every 30-40 minutes most of the year, but only 4 times per day in the winter months. Word has gotten out that it’s great, so you are advised to book ahead.

What makes it fun and unique

viking splash tour cost

At the risk of overselling this part, my group was howling in laughter from nearly start to finish. The greatest highlight was that the guide taught the whole crew how to do a “Viking Scream” at unsuspecting pedestrians we were about to pass. He’d announce the victim as we approached, and they would often show a short look of terror at a Viking bus full of people screaming at them, but then they’d usually laugh right along with everyone in the Duk.

The tour around Dublin is also very informative, and since I can compare it to the other bus tours I can reveal the only things they leave out are a trip to the other side of the river and a look at the giant park and historic prison, but you also get to see U2’s recording studio and a penthouse owned by Colin Ferrell while out in the Dockland’s, so it’s a pretty good trade off, if you ask me.

Cost : €20 for adults, €18 for students/seniors, €10 for children

Duration : 75 minutes (or a bit longer)

Check out the official Viking Splash Tours site for more details and the current schedule of departures.

Took the kids on the Viking Splash Tour today. They had a great time and it was worth the cost of the rather pricey tickets. The tour itself around town was marginally informative, but that's really not the point. If I wanted an in depth informative tour of Dublin I would probably look for a company that didn't have viking hats as a gimmick. That aside, the kids had a great time and that made it all worth while. Our guide was a youngish man that was especially entertaining and was able to keep us interested during the hour plus trip around town. I did learn a few things and the kids got to growl ferociously at a bunch of unsuspecting bystanders. I'll admit I thought it was pretty funny to watch a couple of people nearly have heart-attacks so there's my sense of humor. All in all I'd say do it once especially if you have children with you. They'll have a ball and they'll think you're the coolest for doing something that's so much fun with them. If you're interested in an informative and detailed tour of Dublin, this is a miss.

Photo of edel n.

A fun trip around Dublin. Kids love it as they get to be vikings and roar at the 'celts' on the streets. Not the most informative but it was a hit with teenagers. I'd certainly recommend for families visiting Dublin.

Photo of Patrick H.

LOVED this tour. Fun, interesting, educational, and the tour guides are great. Good for all ages. Answered questions and took photos after the tour. Keep it up!

Photo of Petra B.

I always wondered how this tour is like. Today I finally got to try it. It's a great and fun way to discover the city. And even if you live here there's always something you didn't know before. And what I never thought I'd like: Rrrrrwaaaarrrr isacutually fun.

Photo of Erin H.

Fun! You get a feel for some of the attractions Dublin has to offer with the benefit of a hilarious tour guide. And, you get to wear viking hats and roar at unsuspecting people on the street and the dreaded competition Celts (tour bus riders). What's not to love? It would have been nice to have a longer water portion - it seemed like that was kind of an afterthought - but overall it was good.

Photo of Diego C.

Last thursday we all went along as a group on the viking splash. the tour brings you around the city in a circular way and the tour tells you about the usual sorts of historical and local facts as you get closer to the water. That is the best part - when the vehicle goes into the water. It feels surprisingly stable when you go into the canal dock. One thing I didn't know is that it seems mainly for kids(??) Well, better said, the day we went there were nearly all kids and then us at the back so we felt a little bit retarded but hey it was fun!

Photo of Sharon B.

I have loved the "duck boat" tours in San Francisco and Boston, so I had high expectations for this one as well. The Dublin tour was just o.k.. We arrived early to get good seats, but our group was separated to make room for late arrivals with mll children. The bus was very crowded and perhaps over booked. The guide was enjoyable, but there were no significant sights on the water portion of the trip. The next day we took the hop-on hop-off bus tour, which was far superior at a lower cost.

Photo of Jennifer A.

loved it, the tour guide was hilarious, lots of fun :)

Photo of Miriam O.

We went on this yesterday after my daughter picked it for her choice of what to do on her 6th birthday. It cost E60 for 2 adults + 2 kids, though we could have brought another child for the same 'family ticket' price. The tour guide was exceptional - very knowledgable and very funny. He had the whole bus laughing from start to finish, and having coached us in how to roar like Vikings, we did just that at un-expecting passers-by including groups like the 'cappucino celts', sipping their coffees in posh pavement cafes of Dawson street. There were a few coffee-stained shirts after we scared the life out of them! There was loads of interesting info about the Vikings, Authors like Johnathan Swift & Oscar Wilde, U2 & other musicians, Irish battles, places of interest in the city etc. The vehicle used is a 68 year old DUKW (pronounced DUCK) and he told us a little about their fascinating history too. Our 6 & 7 year olds loved it, and it was just long/short enought to hold their attention. We were lucky to get a nice sunny afternoon - a great and different way to spend a birthday!

The Viking Splash Tours are officially coming back to Dublin

Katy Thornton

viking splash tours dublin

One of Dublin’s biggest tourist attractions is returning.

This is big news. HUGE. After two years off the streets, and the water, the Viking Splash Tours appear to be gearing up for a swift return to Dublin. The company posted to their socials with job positions they need filled, which can only mean one thing.

Dublin continues to heal from two years of lockdowns (and no Viking Splash).

https://www.instagram.com/p/CcnPuO1sb73/

If you want to have a cooler job than any of your friends, Viking Splash Tours are hiring. Currently they’re looking for mechanics, bus drivers, tour guides, as well as admin staff. Make sure to get in touch with them if this sounds like a bit of you. They have both part-time and full-time positions going.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CeLvC8gsKvi/

If you go onto the Viking Splash Tours website, it is possible to make a booking now HERE . This is the best news as we go into tourist season as, and I think you’ll agree, the splash tours is one of Dublin’s top attractions.

And who knows, maybe our dream of having the Viking Splash Tours take place on a 24/7 basis aren’t too far fetched after all!

  • 592msg 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Hilarious 😆 Did the tour yesterday with my hubby and 14yr old son. Must admit I was very hesitant about doing it as it was a surprise for my husband’s birthday and I also thought we would be the only Irish doing it🙈 I have to say I’m so glad that we did! From the minute we got onto the boat till we got off we never stopped laughing! Chris the tour guide was an absolute hoot and totally made the whole experience so worth while. He was very informative throughout the whole tour and never stopped for a breath! He even got the group to sing happy birthday to my hubby which was hilarious 😆 ! Loads of different nationalities and a few Irish too so it was lovely to be part of a mixed group 😊 would definitely recommend it as a family thing to do. Read more Written April 14, 2024

  • angelae904 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Get ready to roar and have fun! Came to Dublin with my daughter. This was absolutely my favourite trip this Easter. Great hostess (can't remember her name but a fiery redhead Viking). She was so much fun. I am nearly 60 but I enjoyed roaring at unsuspecting celts and scaring the daylights out of them. Highly recommended. Read more Written April 10, 2024
