Star Trak: May 2024

Artist rendering of Saturn in open space

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Saturn will be the first planet to appear in the predawn sky in May, rising before 4 a.m. for viewers in the Northern Hemisphere. It will climb higher before dawn as the month progresses. On May 1 it will stand 11 degrees high in the east an hour before sunrise, and this will increase to 26 degrees by month's end.

Mercury will return to the morning sky shortly before dawn in May. It may be best viewed with binoculars very low in the east as the sky brightens. On May 9 the planet will reach its greatest elongation of 26 degrees from the sun.

Jupiter will set within an hour of the sun on May 1 and earlier each successive evening. Its Galilean moons will be visible from time to time. The giant planet will soon disappear from view, reaching conjunction with the sun on May 18. It will reappear in the morning sky next month.

Mars will be low in the eastern sky during May.

Venus will be too close to the sun for observation in May as it approaches conjunction with the sun in mid-June.

Meteor shower

This month Earth will encounter a stream of dust left behind in space by Comet Halley, causing the Eta Aquariid meteor shower that will peak before dawn on May 5. The shower will be active for a few days before and after the peak as well. The meteors will appear to come from a point called the radiant in the constellation Aquarius, which will rise in the east around 2 a.m. local time. The higher this point is above the horizon, the more meteors will be visible. The new moon on May 7 will not interfere with the display of meteors. Observers in the Northern Hemisphere may see 50 meteors per hour at the peak.

Moon phases

The moon will be at last quarter on May 1, new on May 7, at first quarter on May 15, full on May 23, and at last quarter again on May 30.

Newsletter: Vol. 10, Issue 1, April 2024

From the director.

We are thrilled to present our latest newsletter filled with exciting highlights from the Stewart Center on the Global Legal Profession.</

Wishing you all the very best,

Jayanth Krishnan Milt and Judi Stewart Professor of Law Director, Milt and Judi Stewart Center on the Global Legal Profession

Introducing new center coordinator María Lucero Guillén Puón

María Lucero Guillén Puón became the Stewart Center Coordinator in January 2024. Lucero brings a wealth of international experience and a commitment to fostering collaboration. Lucero holds a master’s degree in international affairs from IU. She is from Mexico City where she completed her undergraduate studies in administration at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). Lucero has participated in two exchange programs, one at California State University Northridge and the other at EAFIT University in Colombia. She also worked at the IU Mexico Gateway and has strong connections to Latin America. We welcome Lucero, and we are so glad she has joined us!

The Stewart Center Fellows Class of 2024

The Center is excited to be sending 18 Stewart Fellows this upcoming summer to work in nine different countries, ranging from Argentina to Vietnam. This year’s class will mark over 250 students who have served as Stewart Fellows since the program was established 15 years ago. We wish our students the very best and express our immense gratitude to our primary benefactors, Milt and Judi Stewart as well as to the rest of our supportive donors and internship employers.

A Fragile Framework: How Global Food Systems Intersect with the International Legal Order, the Environment, and the World’s Populations.

The Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies, which is under the auspices of the Stewart Center, held a powerful symposium this past January on the intersection of global food systems, legal frameworks, environmental sustainability, and societal welfare. Bringing together experts from various disciplines from across the country, the symposium addressed, in particular, the pressing issue of food insecurity in the midst of climate change. The IJGLS will be publishing the papers from this conference later this summer – so stay tuned!

Research from the Center

Three significant publications from the Center have recently been released. These include one entitled The 14th Circuit (forthcoming in the Washington University Law Review ), which examines creating a new federal circuit court of appeals dedicated to immigration petitions. A second focuses on the rights of migrant workers in India and the difficulties they face in gaining legal recognition; this paper was recently published in the Wisconsin International Law Journal . And a third has just come out in the University of Illinois Law Review on the role that Big Law lawyers play in assisting immigrants who file federal circuit petitions. A shorter version of this paper was also re-published by Harvard Law School’s magazine entitled The Practice .

Spotlight on Success: Paul Grewal visits Maurer

In February, the Stewart Center welcomed Mr. Paul Grewal, the Chief Legal Officer for Coinbase Global Inc. Mr. Grewal gave two lectures during his visit: one on the intersection of cryptocurrency and traditional property law and the other on his prominent and incredibly interesting legal career, which has included clerking on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, working as a Big Law partner, serving as a U.S. magistrate judge, and then subsequently moving to Facebook’s in-house counsel office, before taking on his current position at Coinbase.

Stewart Center Grants

We have recently received two very supportive grants. The first comes from the IU Office of the Vice President for International Affairs, which will allow the Center to hold a symposium at the IU Mexico Gateway in June on law and alternative energy sources in the Global South. The other comes from the Institute for Advanced Study to facilitate a conference in New Delhi in the fall on the state of access to justice in the Indian lower courts.

Work with the American Bar Association

The Center was called upon by the American Bar Association for two different purposes. First, Professor Krishnan participated in the ABA’s Commission on Immigration’s meeting in Louisville in February, which addressed the state of immigrant rights and access to counsel for detained noncitizens. Second, Professor Krishnan was asked by the ABA to provide comments for a proposal to expand Rule 5.5 of the Model Rules of Professional Conduct, which would allow for greater multi-jurisdictional practice of lawyers seeking to assist immigrants in need of legal representation.

Our Additional Work in Asia

In March, Professor Krishnan traveled to India where he delivered four separate talks on topics ranging from comparative legal education, immigrant rights, access to justice for the needy, and the state of the global legal profession. In May, he will be representing the Center and the Law School at a conference at Hong Kong University, where he will be presenting a paper on Global South lawyering in emerging markets.

We hope you have a great and productive summer,

Jayanth Krishnan & Lucero Guillen

Dr. Selwyn Vickers, Friend and Adviser to IU School of Public Health-Bloomington Is Honored with 2024 Johns Hopkins Distinguished Medical Alumnus Award

Monday, April 22, 2024

Dr. Selwyn M. Vickers

April 22, 2024 - Selwyn M. Vickers, MD, FACS , the current president and CEO of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) , and longtime colleague of faculty at the School of Public Health-Bloomingon (SPH-B), was selected on Feb. 29, 2024, as a recipient of this year’s Johns Hopkins University Distinguished Medical Alumnus Award .

Dr. David Allison, Ph.D.

Dr. David Allison , dean of SPH-B, nominated Dr. Vickers and had this to say about his selection for the award: "Dr. Selwyn Vickers is a man for all seasons: an insightful scholar, compassionate physician, caring mentor, savvy administrator, visionary leader, courageous advocate for equity and beneficence, and to me personally and many others, a trusted friend. I am honored to know Dr. Vickers and delighted to see our alma mater Johns Hopkins give him this well-deserved and prestigious recognition."

Dr. Vickers is a renowned pancreatic cancer surgeon, pancreatic cancer researcher, and leader in health disparities research. Among his many notable accomplishments is his contribution to the development of the injectable drug Minnelide for treating pancreatic and gastrointestinal cancer. The drug was licensed and entered phase 2 trials in 2019, representing a significant milestone in the fight against pancreatic cancer, a disease that currently has a low five-year survival rate. Dr. Vickers has also had leadership roles at several outstanding institutions, including serving as chair of the Department of Surgery at the University of Minnesota, senior vice president for medicine and dean of the School of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), and now president and CEO of MSK.

Dr. Maresa Murray, Ph.D.

Dr. Vickers' colleagues at SPH-B are just as quick to note his humanity, warmth, and passion for promoting equity as they are his academic achievements. Dr. Maresa Murray , a clinical associate professor at the school, had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Vickers when Dean Allison invited her to serve as the moderator of the SPH-B colloquium panel entitled "COVID-19: Health Disparities, Communities, and Discrimination" (June 18, 2020). At that time, Dr. Vickers was based at the UAB School of Medicine and was featured as a speaker at the event to shed light on some of the influential nuances in African American pandemic experiences.

"His respective accomplishments are so extraordinary that one feels the need to continuously scan, and then re-scan, his CV, wondering how one person could achieve so much, so quickly — only to outdo himself as the reading continues," Dr. Murray remarked. "That alone demonstrates why Dean Allison would nominate him for the 2024 Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Distinguished Medical Alumnus Award. But what most impressed me was the humility with which he governed himself. I was in absolute awe of how unpretentious he was, particularly in a world where many would act otherwise. And his acumen among scholars seeking to reduce African American health disparities is unparalleled."

Dr. Vickers received his bachelor's degree in 1982 and his medical degree in 1986, both from Johns Hopkins University. He then stayed on to complete his surgical training before joining the faculty at UAB in 1994. It was while he was at UAB that he met Dean Allison, and their continuing professional relationship has been a boon to SPH-B.

"I had the great fortune to train at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine for 16 years, and I am continually inspired by their exceptional commitment to transforming medicine, research, and patient care," said Dr. Vickers. "I am deeply honored to be recognized by this community, which I value and respect and has helped propel my personal and professional accomplishments forward."

The awards presentation will take place at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore on May 31, 2024, from 4:00-5:00 p.m. in Strauch Auditorium, Armstrong Medical Education Building. The event is free, open to the public and no registration is required.

SPH-B maintains strong connections with outstanding health researchers and teachers across the globe, enabling remarkable scientific advances and rich educational opportunities.
