One of the most popular places to visit in Faridabad is the 10 th century reservoir Surajkund, which means Lake of the Sun. The lake was built by the Tomar dynasty ruler Suraj Pal, who was an ardent devotee of Lord Sun and hence constructed a Sun temple (in ruins now) on its western bank apart from a garden and a pool.

This artificial reservoir with the serene Aravallis in the backdrop has a semi-circular embankment similar to an amphitheatre where you can sit and enjoy the beautiful views while picnicking here. It is the venue of the world renowned Surajkund International Crafts Mela, which is held during the first fortnight of February. You can see the finest of Indian traditional handicraft, handloom and folk art, including dance and music – making it a must visit if you are in Faridabad in February.

There are two graves here – one of the Sufi saint and the other of his elder son. Pilgrims from near and far come to this religious site to pay their homage by offering chaddars and flowers on the graves; however, entry of women is restricted here. Thus, you must refrain from swimming in the lake even along the banks because of the sharp edges; however, it is a great place for cycling.

Since this site has not yet been fully commercialised, it is preferred by picnickers who wish to spend quality time with their loved away from the maddening city crowd. BREAKING: Arizona Senate passes repeal of 1864 abortion ban

Massachusetts places historic limit on families seeking homeless shelter

Maura Healey Michelle Wu

Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey signed a spending bill Tuesday that will enforce a time limit on stays in the state's emergency shelter system, reversing a 40-year-old "right to shelter" for families and pregnant women.

The l egis l ation — which includes $251 million for shelters starting this fiscal year — will enforce a nine-month limit on stays in the system starting in June, but the law also allows for two 90-day extensions following that initial time limit.

Healey said the spending bill “dedicates resources to balance the budget and maintain critical services and programs,” in a statement to NBC News Wednesday.

“It also implements a length of stay policy for Emergency Assistance shelter, which is a responsible step to address our capacity and fiscal constraints as Congress has continued to fail to act on immigration reform,” the statement continued.

Healey added that her office is “finalizing details” in the coming weeks to “ensure that families and providers are informed of the requirements and the services that we have available to help them secure work and stable housing.”

The law also requires the Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities, which oversees the state's emergency shelter system, to establish a rehousing plan that includes case management for those leaving shelters. Families will be eligible to apply for extensions to their stays based upon things like whether they are pregnant or recently gave birth; their veteran status, employment status or participation in workforce training; their imminent placement in housing; or their need to avoid educational interruptions for children in public schools.

Extensions will also be considered for those diagnosed with a disability or medical condition; single parents caring for disabled children or family members or single parents without adequate child care; and those at risk of harm from domestic violence.

Massachusetts was the only state to have a "right to shelter" law to provide housing for families and pregnant women indefinitely. But the state's system has faced historic challenges because of an increase in resident homeless families — who are facing one of the most unaffordable housing markets in the country — and an influx of migrant families who find themselves in need.

The shelter system has housed approximately 7,500 families since Healey set a cap at th at number in October, saying in a statement that the shelter system was becoming "unsustainable."

Healey referred to the remarkable change in the amount of families who qualified for shelter in recent months. According to the Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities, the number of families in state shelters jumped from just under 4,000 in March of 2023 to over 7,500 in April of this year — with another 700 families on the shelter waitlist.

According to the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless, a little over half of the current 7,500 families in the state’s emergency shelter system are those who recently came to the state as refugees or migrants.

State Rep. Aaron Michlewitz, the Democratic chair of the House Ways and Means committee, which was involved in negotiations with the state Senate on the legislation, told NBC News before it passed that even with its potential enactment, Massachusetts would still have one of the most generous shelter systems.

“It’s still one of the most generous, it is probably the most generous program in the country, in terms of what it provides," Michlewitz said. While some other major cities like Chicago and New York allow only short stays in their shelter systems, "we’re talking months here in Massachusetts,” he said.

Shelter directors have argued against the nine-month stay , pointing to data from the Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities which finds that the average length of stays for families in the system is nearly twice as long, at about 16 months.

Iowa town Minden has been hit twice by major tornadoes. Is it a magnet for the storms?

visit place at faridabad

The storm Friday that struck the tiny southwest Iowa town of Minden, destroying dozens of structures and fatally injuring one resident, wasn’t the community’s first experience with a devastating tornado.

An EF4 tornado, even stronger than Friday's EF3, hit the town on June 26, 1976, causing $13.7 million in property damage, as measured in today’s dollars. There were no deaths, despite close calls for dozens of residents who had been attending a carnival when the twister touched down, sending them fleeing for shelter to buildings that failed to withstand the winds.

It's far from the only U.S. city to have had more than one brush with a devastating tornado. The best known is probably Moore, Oklahoma, an Oklahoma City suburb. In the 122 years from 1893 to 2015, it was hit 26 times by tornadoes that included two top-of-the-scale EF5 storms. One in 1999 killed 36 people and injured nearly 600 and another in 2013 killed 24 and injured more than 200.

Iowa also has examples, including a metro Des Moines city hit during Friday's storms. Pleasant Hill, where an EF2 tornado damaged a number of houses, also suffered tornado strikes in 1974, 1982 and 2022.

MAP: See every tornado in Iowa since 1950

What determines where a tornado touches down?

Could it be that some places in the traditional Midwestern Tornado Alley are natural tornado magnets?

There has been speculation over the years citing factors like topography and temperatures. And of course there are explanations with religious roots, both biblical and in Native American lore.

But according to William Gallus, a professor of meteorology at Iowa State University who is a nationally recognized expert on tornadoes, the best science can conclude is that it really just comes down to coincidence.

“The scientific view on that is there's really no geography big enough, significant enough in much of the central U.S., including Iowa, to influence tornadoes,” Gallus said.

That leaves random chance. It you were to blindfold a person, spin them around until they're dizzy and then have them make a mark on a map with a pen, then do it again and again and again, for years on end, “What you are going to see is just from the randomness ... there will be places that might get hit two or three times in ... 50 years and many areas that won’t get hit at all," Gallus said. "We do not believe there’s anything that can explain it.”

“It’s just kind of bad luck that Minden has been hit twice,” he added.

Are some places just safer than others?

On the other side of the equation, is it possible, as some people hold, that some areas can be immune from tornadoes because they're in a valley or near a river?

Gallus pointed out that tornadoes form out of thunderstorms, which can happen anywhere.

“A thunderstorm cloud is maybe 10 miles tall and 10 miles or more across, so it’s a very big thing, and I say a tornado laughs at your valley or river theory,” he said.

Gallus said tornadoes have been documented to cross the Continental Divide, go up or down mountainsides and ford rivers. Tornadoes also can develop in a very short time, as he experienced Friday night while he and colleagues were storm chasing in the Des Moines area.

“We’re basically approaching the west Mixmaster and I looked at the radar and told the driver everything looked good; there’s no (tornado) warning," he said. "Then suddenly, I swear a minute later, we can hear the sirens going off in West Des Moines, and I look at the radar and in one minute, there is now a very strong circulation on the radar.”

Is change the only constant in where, when tornadoes strike?

There are thunderstorm-prone parts of the country where tornadoes are more common, including the swath extending from Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Indiana, Missouri, Iowa and Illinois to Ohio. But even those are subject to change as the climate trends warmer, including when tornadoes occur, with signs that the zone of greater storm frequency is shifting south and east, Gallus said.

Despite that, Iowa continues to be very much a part of that territory. And with the climate warming, Gallus said, there is a potential Iowa won't continue to get the reprieve from thunderstorms and tornadoes it usually has during the winter.

“It might be now that most of September ends up being a very dry, rather warm period of the year but now October and November, even into December, might be when we see these warm spells that end with some severe weather and tornadoes,” he said.

On the other end, a changing climate may end up making June hotter and drier, like weather traditionally experienced in July, meaning the severe weather season may wind down in May rather than late June, Gallus said.

Which Iowa counties see the most tornadoes?

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, here are the 10 Iowa counties with the most tornado activity over the past 25 years:

  • 10 ― Dallas County. Tornadoes since 2000: 26 (4.42 per 100 square miles). National rank: 168.
  • 9 ― Howard County. Tornadoes since 2000: 21 (4.44 per 100 square miles). National rank: 166.

  • 7 ― Grundy County. Tornadoes since 2000: 23 (4.58 per 100 square miles). National rank: 142.
  • 6 ― Scott County. Tornadoes since 2000: 21 (4.58 per 100 square miles). National rank: 140.
  • 5 ― Hardin County. Tornadoes since 2000: 30 (5.27 per 100 square miles). National rank: 89.

  • 2 ― Buchanan County. Tornadoes since 2000: 32 (5.6 per 100 square miles). National rank: 70.
  • 1 ― Webster County. Tornadoes since 2000: 41 (5.73 per 100 square miles). National rank: 64.

Trump said watching NYPD clear out protesters at Columbia "was a beautiful thing to watch”

From CNN's Kate Sullivan

Republican presidential candidate former President Donald Trump speaks at a campaign rally on Wednesday, May 1, at the Waukesha County Expo Center in Waukesha, Wisconsin.

Former President Donald Trump on Wednesday described watching New York police officers clear the Columbia University building that was being occupied by pro-Palestinian protesters as "a beautiful thing to watch.”

“The police came in and in exactly two hours, everything was over. It was a beautiful thing to watch, New York’s finest," Trump said during a rally in Waukesha, Wisconsin. "You saw them go up in ladders, they’re breaking the windows and getting in and that’s dangerous… They knocked it out and they were incredible."

Trump said he thought Columbia University’s reputation had been “badly damaged,” criticizing school President Minouche Shafik.

“The person that heads it up, a woman, she waited so long, she was so weak, she was so afraid, she was so bad,” Trump said.

Shafik addressed the campus community in a letter released Wednesday after police had cleared the school grounds of protests, noting that the “drastic escalation” of months-long protests “pushed the University to the brink."

Portland State University negotiations fall through, but 50 protesters leave occupied library, president says

From CNN’s Veronica Miracle and Jeffrey Kopp

Graffiti and some damage are seen at the Millar Library at Portland State University, after pro-Palestinian demonstrators occupied the space, in Portland, Oregon, on Tuesday, April 30.

Negotiations with student protesters at Portland State University who occupied a campus library fell through early Wednesday, but about 50 people left the building on their own, the university's president said.

Between 50 and 75 protesters broke into the Branford Price Millar Library on Monday, Portland Police Chief Bob Day previously told CNN.

Negotiators for the students occupying the building indicated they would sign an agreement to leave the building by 1:30 a.m. local time, president Ann Cudd said. She said she guaranteed the students would not be expelled or suspended and would not face criminal charges — in exchange, the students agreed to not violate codes of conduct. The president said she also agreed to meet with student leaders on May 17 to continue talks.

“I feverishly wish that the students in the library had signed on to our agreement, but, after their negotiators told us they had a deal, they apparently chose not to sign,” Cudd said. It doesn’t appear that there are many students left inside the building Wednesday, CNN observed.

Cudd said it is her understanding that some people inside the library are not students. Graffiti on the library building reads “Free Gaza” and “To Gaza with love.”

“Many of us have seen the vandalism to our library and while the cost of property damage cannot compare to the cost of human lives, this destructive protest is weighing heavy on our campus community who collectively pay for our facilities and expect and deserve to use them in a setting that is welcoming to all students," the president said.

Palestinian-American professor at University of Wisconsin-Madison injured in altercation with campus police

From CNN's Fabiana Chaparro and Kara Devlin

Associate Professor of Community & Environmental Sociology Samer Alatout is seen being held to the ground by University of Wisconsin-Madison Police officers on Wednesday, May 1.

In a photo shared with CNN by Tyler Katzenberger from the college paper The Daily Cardinal, Samer Alatout, an associate professor of community and environmental sociology, is seen being held to the ground by University of Wisconsin-Madison police officers.

In an interview with CNN affiliate WMTV, Alatout said police came to the on-campus pro-Palestinian demonstration with riot gear and began breaking up the protest. He added that protests held for the past two days had been "really beautiful, peaceful," with students from different religious and ethnic backgrounds protesting together.

Alatout noted there were several university faculty and staff members present as well.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison would not confirm to CNN whether Alatout had been among those arrested earlier Wednesday. According to the University of Wisconsin-Madison Police Department, a total of 34 people were arrested, a majority of whom "were released with no citation issued."

"Today it seems the administration has decided to give the green light for the police force to go in and break up the protest," said Alatout, adding that the police were charging "violently" at the demonstrators.

"I think it is racially motivated," Alatout told WMTV. "I'm the only Palestinian-American professor who is advising, for example, a student group here and who has been involved with the staff and faculty. Everyone in the administration knows me."

Alatout said that police officers hit him several times with their shields and "popped" him on his nose and forehead. They also pulled him to the ground several times, he said.

CNN has reached out to university police for more details, including whether Alatout was among the people arrested.

"I cannot leave the students alone, period. That's my first and foremost obligation," Alatout said.

Biden left without an easy solution as campus protests heat up

From CNN's Kevin Liptak and Jeff Zeleny

As protests and attempts to quell them spread from New York to Los Angeles and many states in between, President Joe Biden finds himself caught in a series of political and diplomatic crosscurrents without an easy solution.

He is opposed to lawlessness and the takeover of campus buildings and has strongly condemned instances of antisemitism. But he is also mindful of students’ right to protest, even when the anger is directed at his policies toward Israel.

At the same time, he is navigating a highly sensitive moment in the Gaza war, as officials pursue a fresh proposal to secure the release of hostages held by Hamas. The plan, if agreed to, would result in a temporary pause in the fighting — an outcome some Biden advisers hope could lower the temperature at home.

For the president, the dueling domestic and foreign policy challenges have imposed a unique burden six months before the election. It’s a rare moment that puts the demand for strong presidential leadership at odds with empathy, a trademark of his public persona.

The Biden campaign is closely watching the protests unfold, particularly those in battleground states, and advisers are keenly aware of the domestic political consequences of the administration’s policy toward Israel but remain hopeful the crisis in the region will ease by the fall.

“If politics was driving this, the president obviously would have changed course months ago,” a senior Democratic adviser told CNN, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive topic inside the campaign. “But there is not a simple political solution to this. It’s driven by complex policy decisions without easy answers.”

From CNN's Artemis Moshtaghian

Shiraz University in Iran says it will offer scholarships to students from universities in the United States and Europe who have been expelled during the ongoing student protests connected to the crisis in the Middle East.

“Students and even professors who have been expelled or threatened with expulsion can continue their studies in Shiraz University and I think that other universities in Shiraz and Fars province are prepared to do the same too," Shiraz University President Mohammad Moreno said.

Shiraz is a major city in Southern Iran and the capital of Fars province.

Moreno made the comments during a gathering of students and professors from several Shiraz universities in support of US and European pro-Palestinian protesters.

Discussions ongoing about graduation and police presence on Columbia's campus, journalism dean says

From CNN's Julia Vargas Jones

NYPD officers stand at the entrance of Columbia University in New York City on Wednesday May 1.

The Dean of Columbia University Journalism School said in a memo to students that discussions are ongoing about what will happen with graduation, the ongoing NYPD presence on campus and the university’s next steps in light of Tuesday night’s events.

“I anticipate learning more about those things later today,” Jelani Cobb said the memo.

He praised the way student journalists covered the events as New York Police Department officers raided campus, confirming that at least some of them were forced off campus by police.

"Last night’s events demanded the most from Columbia Journalism School. But we saw in real time how reporters’ dedication to the truth helps all of us understand what is at stake during a time of crisis,” Cobb said.

Cobb said about 70 students and faculty advisors were able to set up a newsroom at the school’s Brown Institute to cover what happened.

“By 9:30 p.m., NYPD entered campus, Hamilton Hall, and raided the encampment. During this time, they restricted the movement of CJS students. Some of our reporters were forced off campus, while others were able to return to Brown and edit their work,” Cobb said in a breakdown of how the evening unfolded.

California governor says "limited and delayed campus law enforcement response" at UCLA was "unacceptable"

From CNN's Chandelis Duster and Cheri Mossburg

California Gov. Gavin Newsom condemned violence that occurred at The University of California, Los Angeles, overnight.

“The law is clear: The right to free speech does not extend to inciting violence, vandalism, or lawlessness on campus,” Newsom said in a statement posted on social media on Wednesday. “Those who engage in illegal behavior must be held accountable for their actions - including through criminal prosecution, suspension, or expulsion.”

In a separate statemen t from his office, the governor also said, “the limited and delayed campus law enforcement response at UCLA last night was unacceptable — and it demands answers.” He said his office “immediately deployed” California Highway Patrol to the campus once it was clear state assistance was needed to support the local response.

"The Governor's Office of Emergency Services has been coordinating law enforcement mutual aid requests statewide, including responding for assistance at UCLA throughout the night and early morning," his office said. "The state has established a robust Law Enforcement Mutual Aid System to provide law enforcement assistance to college campuses when requested during incidents beyond the capacity of local and campus police. We stand ready to provide additional mutual aid to local law enforcement and campuses when requested."

CNN has reached out to UCLA for details on the university’s police response to the clashes. It is unclear at this time how many people were arrested as a result of the violence, if any.
