6 Secrets of Super Nintendo World That Mario Fans Need to Know Before They Visit

The theme park is now open at Universal Studios in Hollywood, California!

a wide view of super nintendo world

Integrated with the rest of the Universal, it doesn’t require a separate admission, though a virtual line may develop to enter on crowded days when that section of the park hits its capacity. The area is small — just one ride, compared with two at the Super Nintendo World in Japan — along with games to play, food to eat and, of course, The 1-UP Factory Store where you can get plenty of Nintendo merchandise.

At the moment, there isn’t a Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios’ Orlando location. It’s expected to open there as part of Universal’s Epic Universe , a new park scheduled to open in 2025 that’s also rumored to be home to areas devoted to the Universal Monsters and How to Train Your Dragon .

But even though it's on the smaller side, that doesn’t mean there isn't much to do, along with its own ins and outs for how to do them. After visiting as a welcomed guest on a press trip, I’ve found these are the best ways to get the most out of your visit to Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios in Hollywood.

Super Nintendo World is really way more fun if you get the Power-Up Band.

Usually, I’m loathe to tell people they have to buy something extra on top of an already-expensive theme park ticket. You certainly don’t need the Power-Up Band to visit Super Nintendo World — and, at $40 each, skipping it is entirely reasonable. You can still take a spin on the Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge ride, play mini-games, meet the characters and enjoy a treat from Toadstool Cafe without one.

But the world really does open up a lot more if you get one, and you get access to so many more feel-like-I’ve-been-transported-inside-a-Nintendo-game elements. If you wear a Power-Up band, you can smash bricks, hit question boxes, set off POWs and collect gifts — and the Universal app will keep track of all the coins you’ve earned and all the loot you got. (Hit those same bricks without the band, and you’ll just hear an unsatisfying thud.) Tap it on the wheel of your kart in Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge, and it’ll add to your coin count, and maybe you’ll even win a trophy.

a mario themed power up band

Even the land’s four mini-games, which can be attempted by anybody, add another dimension if you have the Power-Up Band. Each win will get you a key, and three keys means you can unlock the entrance to Bowser, Jr.’s lair. There, you get to explore some more dark and spooky hallways, — which includes a shout-out to my favorite Nintendo item ever, Kuribo’s Shoe — collect more items and challenge Bowser, Jr. to another mini-game in a bid to retrieve Princess Peach’s Golden Mushroom. But you can’t collect the keys unless you have the band.

Odd corners, long hallways and dead ends often have a purpose.

You might look into a room and think the only thing in there is just another question block. Or you might think an entrance is needlessly wide, or that a hallway juts out at an odd angle.

Those nooks and crannies are often where you can find hidden characters (again, if you have a Power-Up Band). There are four concealed throughout the land: Mario, Luigi, Peach and Bowser. They look pixelated, like they did in the old, 8-bit version of Super Mario Bros. Tap a Band to an “M” hidden on the wall to make them appear. Each one you find earns you a badge at 45 coins in the app; get all four and you’ll get another badge and another 100 coins (which we all know is an extra life).

So it definitely pays to go up staircases, wander hallways and scan the walls looking for those Ms.

Nintendo fans will have plenty to enjoy while waiting for Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge.

Which is a good thing, because if you want to ride it, you’re probably going to have to wait for a while. At the moment, Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge is exempt from the Universal Express pass, which will get you into the land even if there's a virtual line, but won’t let you skip the queue for the ride. If you're worried about long wait times, you can get an early-entry ticket to Super Nintendo World for an additional $20 — if they’re available — which lets you into the land an hour before the general public. Or, if you’re rolling solo, you can check out the separate, single-rider line — off to the right when you enter the attraction — which might save you some time. Otherwise, when I was there, the waits were the shortest closer to the end of the day, when the littlest ones were at dinner or heading home altogether.)

But even if you have a long wait, there’s plenty for Nintendo fans to gush over in the queuing area. Different Nintendo eras and games are represented: you can enjoy the pink wispiness of Yoshi’s Island , see the trophies from different Mario Kart cups and even get a look at some of Bowser's evil plans in his library.

bowser's desk in the queuing area of mario kart bowser's challenge it has his evil plans drawn out on it

See the map hanging on the wall? It has an area marked with Piranha Plants, then an underwater area, then a fiery area, followed by something that looks like a classic Mario Kart track — hey, just like the ride course! (Though there are more areas to the ride than that, so it’s not a total spoiler.)

The “window” seats are the best place to sit at Toadstool Cafe.

No visit is complete without a stop at Toadstool Cafe. Here’s where you can get the mushroom-shaped collectible drink bottles you see everyone carrying around. The burgers were a hit with my party — the kids’ version came with its own mini Mario and a chocolate-covered cookie shaped like a coin, while the adult version had a mustache-adorned bun, and bother are served with on-theme truffle fries — but I admit my favorite was the Piranha Plant Caprese.

the mario mini burger adventure set at toadstool cafe

But enough about the food — how’s the view? Well, it’s virtual: Sit at a “window” seat, and you’ll be next to screens that look out onto the Mushroom Kingdom, and all the Toads frolicking therein. But if you’re really lucky, you’ll be seated there when Bowser’s airship goes by, and you’ll get front-row access to the mayhem it causes (the lighting and music even change in the rest of the café).

Another tip: Keep one eye on the line if you want to eat at Toadstool Cafe. If it gets crowded, they might start handing out slips of paper with a return time on them. On the weekday I visited, I got my slip around 11:30 am and my return time was 4:15 pm, so they go fast! And, when you do enter, make sure to tap your Power-Up Band at the entrance to get a gift from Toad.

It’s mostly Super Mario Bros., but it’s not all Super Mario Bros.

Sorry Kirby fans, you won’t see Meta Knight walking around with Mario and Luigi. Nor will you see Samus from Metroid or Link and Zelda. Even though it’s called Super Nintendo World, for the moment, it’s really Super Mario World.

..or is it? See if you can spot these guys in the land.

pikmin in super nintendo world

There are a couple of places where you can find Pikmin getting into mischief around Super Nintendo World. See if you can spot them all!

You don't really need a car to get there.

Los Angeles has a reputation of being a driver's city, but if you're a non-driver or balk at the cost of car rental, it's actually easy to get around without one. And while there are hotels right at the park, we stayed as guests of The Garland hotel on our press trip, which has its own trolley that takes guests to and from Universal Studios. (My 7-year-old was also thrilled at the prospect of having her own bunk bed in the hotel room, which was cordoned off in its own area with its own TV.) Head down for an early breakfast at The Front Yard , the Garland's on-site restaurant, and you're likely to see lots of little Marios, Luigis and Peaches dining before all heading out on the trolley together.

a girl in a peach dress standing in front of the garland trolley

Once you get to Universal, there are trams that go between the Universal CityWalk — the shopping center outside the gates of the theme park — and the Los Angeles Metro . It's right on the line that can take you to popular sightseeing destinations like the Hollywood Walk of Fame , TCL Chinese Theater and the bus to the Griffith Observatory . You can save that gas money and use it on souvenirs.

Guide to SUPER NINTENDO WORLD at Universal Studios Hollywood

visit super mario world

I step onto Super Star Plaza at exactly 8:03 am. In front of me, big, colorful letters invite me into the real-world version of a scenery and gameplay I know all too well: SUPER NINTENDO WORLD . I’m here and I can’t believe it.

As I walk through the life-sized green pipe, with sparkling rainbow colors all around me and a familiar soundtrack playing in the background, it’s pure deja vu — time travel, if you will. I’m suddenly that little gamer girl all over again. “This is the magic of Universal,” says Abbye Finnan, show producer for SUPER NINTENDO WORLD at Universal Studios Hollywood . “We’ve been putting guests inside their favorite movies and stories for so long, and now we’re inviting them inside a game.”

I’m in awe — and I’m not alone. Around me, I see people of all ages from all around the world. I see them walking into the land and getting on their knees, bawling. I spot them on video calls with friends who couldn’t be there. I watch entire families dressed up as their favorite characters walking around with Yoshi headbands and Bowser backpacks. I witness yet another person getting on their knees, only this time they’ve got an engagement ring inside a Super Star Popcorn Bucket and are proposing to their partner in front of Peach’s Castle. Folks, it’s a big deal.

Welcome to SUPER NINTENDO WORLD at Universal Studios Hollywood! An entirely themed, immersive land that brings to life the characters and colorful thematic spaces many of us have interacted with for the past 20+ years.

Whether you’re a gamer or not, you’ll absolutely love it and want to jump right in! So, here’s the lay of the entire land.

BEFORE YOU GO

I know you’re dying to get to the other side of the green pipe and into this immersive world, but there’s a few important things you need to know before pressing start on your day.

Turns out you’re not merely visiting SUPER NINTENDO WORLD — you’re here on a mission (as one always is when in the company of Mario and friends). As soon as you enter the land through the pipe and into Peach’s Castle, the portraits on the two side walls set up your quest: Bowser Jr. has stolen the Golden Mushroom from Peach’s Castle and Princess Peach is counting on you to retrieve it . To do that, you need to collect three keys within the land — whether it’s by facing the Key Challenges, collecting all 8-bit characters, or by getting them from Mario and Princess Peach. Once you collect the keys, you can now unlock the final battle between you and Bowser Jr.

The Universal Cup at Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge.

And, there’s more: Bowser has challenged Mario and friends to the ultimate race, and you can get into your own kart (along with three other people) to help Team Mario win the Golden Cup on Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge .

Phew, busy day for you! So, let’s get started.

Getting inside the Land

A wide shot of the Mushroom Kingdom at Universal Studios Hollywood.

SUPER NINTENDO WORLD is located on the Lower Lot of Universal Studios Hollywood — you’ll know you’ve made it when you see Bowser’s Castle from the Starway, the escalators that take you from the Upper Lot to the lower portion of the theme park.

Depending on the day, you’ll need to make a reservation to enter the land by joining the Virtual Line . It’s pretty straightforward: once you’ve entered the theme park, open up the Official Universal Studios Hollywood app , select the number of people in your party (up to 10) and join the virtual queue for that same day. Keep in mind that this reservation does not include the Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge attraction, it’s solely for the land — you won’t want to skip the queue for the attraction anyway cause it’s awesome.

And although the Virtual Line gives you the flexibility of enjoying the rest of the theme park while you wait for your turn to experience the land, I personally recommend getting SUPER NINTENDO WORLD Early Access Ticket . Walking into the land before everyone else? Yes, please! It’s a great opportunity to explore every inch of SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, take awesome photos of the Mushroom Kingdom, get extra practice on the Key Challenges, snag your favorite Nintendo souvenirs (wanted: the reversible Super Star pillow that turns into a ? Block), and experience Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge before it gets busy.

PRO TIP:   If you have the Universal Express Pass you don’t need a reservation —  the Pass gives you a one-time entry to SUPER NINTENDO WORLD with no reservation required.

Level Up with Power-Up Bands

Close-up of the SUPER NINTENDO WORLD hub on the Universal Studios Hollywood app.

Whose team are you on? I’m Team Peach til the end and I’ve got a Power-Up Band to prove it! The bands are themed to one of six characters — Mario, Luigi, Toad, Yoshi, Princess Peach and Princess Daisy — and by picking your favorite one, you’re also picking the team you’re competing with throughout the land. Big commitment, huh? Having a Power-Up Band truly elevates your experience inside SUPER NINTENDO WORLD and takes the gameplay to a whole other level (pun intended).

What I love the most about this land is how immersive and experiential it is. It all ties together so perfectly — the band, the app, the attractions, the challenges… And getting to experience it fully, with all the perks and advantages, is truly memorable. Yes, you can enjoy SUPER NINTENDO WORLD without a Power-Up Band, but you’ll miss out on the ability to track your score and compete with friends and family.

With the Power-Up Band, you are able to collect the keys that will ultimately unlock the final showdown with Bowser Jr. to retrieve the Golden Mushroom, track your score on Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge ride (more on that later!), punch the ? Blocks to collect digital coins and stamps, and keep track of your score against other teams on the Checkpoint screens inside the land and on your Universal Studios Hollywood App. And because you synced the band with the app, you’ll have a history of how well you did and can use the same one each time you visit (fun fact: it works at SUPER NINTENDO WORLD in Universal Studios Japan as well!) “We wanted SUPER NINTENDO WORLD to be a fully immersive land, so guests aren’t just watching it all happen, they’re part of it,” says Finnan. Mission accomplished.

PRO TIP: Download the Official Universal Studios Hollywood App before you arrive so you can join the Virtual Line as soon as you walk into the theme park and sync your Power-Up Band before entering SUPER NINTENDO WORLD.

Piranha Plant at SUPER NINTENDO WORLD.

As you walk into the Mushroom Kingdom, you’ll probably need to hit pause for a moment to take it all in. Go on, you deserve it. I’ll wait.

Once you’re ready to resume, check out Mt. Beanpole and all of its layers! Can you spot the Goombas, Piranha Plants, Thwomps, coins, ? Blocks, and Koopa Troopas moving around the facade of the land? Even the lampposts are dotted with little Super Stars on them!

One thing to keep in mind is that there’s no right way to explore the land. You can do it differently every time you come. Exploration is a big component to SUPER NINTENDO WORLD at Universal Studios Hollywood, so be curious, look a little harder each time you come, and go wherever your heart takes you.Whether you’re taking on the different Key Challenges , battling Bowser Jr., getting your picture taken with Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach and Toad, or catching your breath by sitting in the shade on top of a mushroom under another mushroom, here’s everything you can do, tap, punch, collect, win at SUPER NINTENDO WORLD.

Play Around the Land

Two kids play with ? Block at SUPER NINTENDO WORLD.

One thing you have to know about me is that I’m not a competitive person. I’m just not. Well, until I stepped foot into SUPER NINTENDO WORLD . I made it my mission in life to rank as high as possible on the Daily Ranking board — which you can see on your Universal Studios Hollywood app and on the big screens at Checkpoint, right by 1-UP Factory store. And you’ve got tons of opportunities to outscore your friends. Just like in the games, the more coins you collect from around the land and from the ride, the more points you get.

Besides committing to every Key Challenge (more on that below) and riding Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge, I had a blast just running around SUPER NINTENDO WORLD punching ? Blocks, collecting coins, exploring the Frosted Glacier area while peeping into the AR Binoculars for fun surprises, and hunting easter eggs around the land. (Can you find all of them?) Oh, and in case you’re wondering, I wrapped up the day in 4th place and did get my name on the big screen — who knew my gamer genes would stand the test of time?

Key Challenges

There are four main Key Challenges around SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, a great way to collect the three keys you’ll need to unlock the final challenge against Bowser Jr. and retrieve the Golden Mushroom

Piranha Plant Nap Mishap

Guests play Piranha Plant Nap Mishap at SUPER NINTENDO WORLD.

As soon as you start, several alarm clocks start ringing and wake up the giant Piranha Plant. The goal is for the players to turn off all the alarm clocks so the Piranha Plant goes back to sleep. It’s much easier to play as a team, but I’m living proof that you can tackle the challenge solo — you just might need to practice a bit.

Koopa Troopa POWer Punch

This one is all about timing: you have to punch the red POW Block at just the right moment so a spinning green shell bursts though the upper pipe exit, hitting the POW Block. Definitely one of the most challenging of the four, and when you finally get that key, you’ll feel extra proud.

Goomba Crazy Crank

You’re up against a Goomba! This challenge is pretty straightforward, but takes arm power — turn the crank fast enough to knock down a running Goomba from the spinning wheel.

Thwomp Panel Panic

This challenge requires coordination and teamwork. Players have to tap the blocks on the screen to change from either blue to all yellow or yellow to all blue before the Thwomp strikes down and mixes everything up again. Be sure to decide which color you want to make the board BEFORE you start the challenge.

PRO TIP: When you flip a panel with a red arrow, the panel next to it will also flip. So, the order in which you flip is also critical!

Bowser Jr. Shadow Showdown

Guests play Bowser Jr. Shadow Showdown at SUPER NINTENDO WORLD.

Congratulations! You’ve won at least three of the four challenges and have collected enough keys to unlock the final challenge. You’re about to enter Bowser Jr.’s hideout to finally retrieve the Golden Mushroom. To face the ultimate showdown, you’ll position yourself in front of a large screen alongside other players. Once the game starts, your shadow will be projected on that screen in front of you. Be prepared to move your whole body to hit Bob-ombs, dodge Bullet Bills, swing your arms to throw Fireballs, punch the ? Blocks, and jump to get a Power-Up. See who scores the highest among your group and celebrate having defeated Bowser Jr. and reuniting Princess Peach with her Golden Mushroom.

Meet and Greet Friends

A woman poses with Mario and Luigi meet-and-greet characters at SUPER NINTENDO WORLD.

As if all of this wasn’t already cool enough, you can meet and actually talk to Mario and Luigi, right in the center of SUPER NINTENDO WORLD. A few steps away, go and say hi to Princess Peach in the Gazebo by her Castle. Make sure you find Toad, too!

Experience Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge

The entrance to Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge at Mt. Beanpole at SUPER NINTENDO WORLD.

This is the moment you’ve all been waiting for — I know I have. It’s time to put on the visor and battle Team Bowser alongside Mario, Luigi and friends on Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge . This groundbreaking ride has cutting-edge technology that makes you feel like you’re actually steering through different levels and versions of the Mario Kart game. You drive on different tracks, go up in the clouds, and drift through underwater courses, all while collecting coins and throwing shells to win the Golden Cup. Who knows, you might even make it to Rainbow Road… “People from all over the world have some sort of memory tied to Mario Kart,” Finnan says. “I used to play it with my brothers and cousins growing up. So, when coming to SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, guests want to be able to experience the game with Mario riding alongside of you. They want to feel part of the competition.”

A blonde woman stands and smiles in the Mario Kart queue.

As you explore the different areas of the queue, including a set of Yoshi’s Island themed spaces, Bowser’s iconic castle (where you get the best view of the land), and two pre-show rooms (where you’ll gear up with a pretty cool visor), you’ll eventually be ready to board a kart. But first things first: make sure you tap your Power-Up Band to the steering wheel right in front of you so you can earn points and see how well you’re doing compared to other teams (and isn’t that the whole point?). Next, attach your special goggles to the visor and… well, enjoy the ride! Although I wish I could put into words the awesome things you’ll experience during the ride, I guess I’ll save the details. But I will tell you that what I love the most about this ride is that there are multiple outcomes to the race, making each time very unique.

WHERE TO EAT

Graphic of Chef Toad at Toadstool Cafe.

Toadstool Cafe is an attraction in itself. Trust me, I toured Chef Toad’s top-notch venue and tried every single dish — from everything on the kids’ menu to the themed desserts. Each item was created by Chef Toad himself. Chef Julia Thrash, Universal Studios Hollywood’s executive chef explains that there’s a story behind each dish and that Chef Toad’s whole ideation was inspired by the Mushroom Kingdom.

Mushroom soup in a red 1-Up mushroom bowl from Toadstool Cafe.

I’ll give you some examples so you can understand what a gift Chef Toad’s creations are to Nintendo fans: The Super Mushroom Soup (probably my favorite dish) is a creamy mushroom soup with truffle oil and little mushroom crackers on it, served in an awesome Super Mushroom bowl. The Princess Peach Cupcake, almost too pretty to eat, is a raspberry-filled funfetti cake and the Mt. Beanpole Cake represents the tiers of the landscape in the Mushroom Kingdom. Yoshi’s Favorite Fruit & Veggie Salad has starfruit in it as a reference to the Super Star and it’s also topped with Yoshi egg croutons.

A cake version of Mt. Beanpole available at Toadstool Cafe.

From the mind-blowing pesto-grilled-chicken Luigi Burger (adding a slice of crunchy green pepper is just genius!), to the ? Block Tiramisu (which I recommend using one of the cookie block walls as a vessel to dig into the dessert!) to the Super Star Lemon Squash, a lemon soda topped with mango-flavored Super Stars with juice-filled bobas that pop inside your mouth, everything on the menu is cooked, plated and decorated to perfection. “From creation to execution, Chef Toad put a lot of thought and time into each item. And his biggest accomplishment is making sure that every guest is getting an elevated, picture-perfect dish in front of them every time,” says Chef Julia.

WHERE TO SHOP

Plush Mario and Luigi toys.

Super Star Popcorn Bucket (that lights up!), Super Mushroom Drink Bottles, Yoshi and Luigi Headbands, Chef Toad plushies, Mario Kart themed shirts, stylish backpacks (one of which shaped like Bowser’s shell), a lamp with a little Mario jumping … There aren’t enough shopping bags in SUPER NINTENDO WORLD for all I wanted to bring home with me. Although you can get most of the merchandise options around Universal Studios Hollywood and CityWalk , the most exclusive ones can be found at the 1-UP Factory store, located within SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, right by the Checkpoint screens. As other fun elements in the land, you enter the store by walking into a yellow pipe. You also exit Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge through the store, so you can’t and won’t miss it.

Well, as you can see, I had the time of my life. Visit SUPER NINTENDO WORLD at Universal Studios Hollywood !

Guide to Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood

visit super mario world

Our strategy guide to Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood explains accessing the land, Mario Kart tips & tricks, Power-Up Band info, how to avoid crowds, and other recommendations to make the most of your visit and save time at what’s sure to be an incredibly popular addition to the Southern California theme park lineup!

In case you’re unfamiliar with it, Super Nintendo World is located inside Universal Studios Hollywood. Contrary to certain mainstream media characterizations, it’s a single land–and a small one at that–and not a standalone theme park. The Los Angeles location is the second of three confirmed Super Nintendo Worlds, with the first having debuted at Universal Studios Japan in Osaka and the final one slated to open in Epic Universe at Universal Orlando Resort in Florida.

Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood is the smallest of the three versions. The Los Angeles incarnation features a Mario Kart ride, Toadstool Cafe restaurant, character meet & greets, interactive mini-games, and shopping. As compared to the existing version in Japan, it’s missing the Yoshi’s Adventure slow-moving dark ride and some snack stands; there are also layout differences and the land is designed with different levels. (In elevation terms, not in the video game sense.)

Although this is a strategy guide rather than a review (for that, see our Super Nintendo World Review: Good, Bad & Ugly ), we’ll nevertheless start with what makes this land so special. In a nutshell, Super Nintendo World excels at wish fulfillment. Seeing the Mushroom Kingdom come into view for the first time after exiting the Warp Pipe was like a childhood dream come true.

It’s impossible to articulate the overwhelming rush of nostalgia and excitement felt upon entering Super Nintendo World. It’s all so familiar and instantly recognizable, yet utterly unexpected. Running around the land as an adult feels shockingly similar to being in a basement back in 1998 playing the Nintendo 64.

visit super mario world

Although the land is small, it packs a powerful punch. It’s a sensory overload, oozing with charm, kineticism, interactivity, and immersiveness. Although the land is obviously a different medium, it very much captures the frenetic energy of Nintendo video games. There’s that same sense of communal joy and fun, and you feel like a kid again Super Nintendo World.

That’s the good. Since this is a strategy guide aimed at helping you maximize your enjoyment and time spent in this jam-packed land, we’ll save our constructive criticism of Super Nintendo World for the end, where it’s easier to skip if you’d prefer to go in with a sense of childlike wonder…

Download the Universal Studios Hollywood App in Advance – Within the Universal Studios Hollywood app, there’s a Super Nintendo World section. (That’s not even really the right term–it’s essentially an app within an app.) We highly recommend downloading the USH app prior to your visit and linking your tickets as a general matter, as it’s needed for seeing wait times and more. Your day at Universal Studios Hollywood is much easier with the app.

Most notably, the USH app is needed to make Virtual Line reservations, and Super Nintendo World will use a timed entry system on busier days. Reservations are not always required to enter the land, but it’s important you check on the day of your visit so you don’t miss out. (Super Nintendo World is small, so we anticipate timed entry being used often while the land is still new or on busier days.)

As for the Super Nintendo World sup-app, it shows how many coins you’ve collected, keys you’ve earned, and where you rank as compared to other players. It’s also where you can see your stamp collection. I’m not a gamer who is trophy-obsessed, but I still think this is fun and addictive.

On top of that, browsing through the stamps you have  not acquired gives you ideas of things to do. For example, clicking on the unearned Mario Kart stamps might reveal where secret blocks are located in sections of the ride or what to look for when using the binoculars on the observation deck. Those are just two of many actual examples, making the app a good way to expand your enjoyment of Super Nintendo World!

Early Access Tickets – Universal Studios Hollywood is selling Super Nintendo World Early Access. This ticket is valid for early admission to Super Nintendo World one hour prior to scheduled park opening and one-time express access to the Studio Tour (valid until 11 a.m.).

For $20 to $30, you can add this on to your theme park admission, which must be purchased separately for the same date. Availability is limited, and some dates are already sold out for Early Access to Super Nintendo World. To purchase this add-on, go to the “Buy Tickets and Passes” page on Universal Studios Hollywood’s website.

Without question, this will be the best way to beat the crowds at the minigames and Mario Kart, and is a great option if you want to knock out Super Nintendo World quickly in order to experience the entirety of Universal Studios Hollywood in a single day.

visit super mario world

A.M. Arrival – Californians are notorious for never being on time. Blame it on the traffic. Call it fashionably late. Whatever the reason, it’s true (see SNL’s serial documentary, The Californians , for further insight). That includes arriving to theme parks like Universal Studios Hollywood.

Even if you opt against buying Early Access to Super Nintendo World, you’re going to be ahead of the curve by showing up at official park opening. You probably won’t have to hassle with the Virtual Line at this point, and you’ll encounter shorter wait times than during the midday rush. Sure, you’ll be behind however many guests opt for Early Access, but you’ll be in front of the many thousands of people who will mosey up at noon and expect to enter Super Nintendo World without issue.

In all seriousness, traffic is an actual issue and a major impediment to arriving at Universal Studios Hollywood at park opening. Traffic on I-5 and the Hollywood Freeway can be brutal coming from Disneyland (or anywhere in Orange County). To that end, we typically advise doing an overnight stay at a hotel in the area. (See our List of the Best Hotels Near Universal Studios Hollywood for recommendations.)

visit super mario world

Buy Power-Up Bands – The heart and soul of Super Nintendo World is its interactivity. This means the best parts of the land are behind the paywall of the Power-Up Bands. This is essentially a slap band with a big puck inside that costs $40 and tracks your “progress” in Super Nintendo World, and opens up minigames and other playable elements of the land.

Power-Up Bands are available for purchase at special vending machine kiosks located near the Piranha Plant Nap Mishap game. At these vending machines, you can pay with credit card or Apple Pay. Power-Up Bands are also sold at the 1-UP Factory Store and other shops inside Universal Studios Hollywood. (I don’t recall whether they’re in the Nintendo shop in CityWalk.)

On the back of the Power-Up Band is a unique QR code that you can scan into the Universal Studios Hollywood app to link your band. The same Power-Up Bands can be used in Japan and Hollywood, so it’s safe to assume that Power-Up Bands purchased at USH will also work at Epic Universe when that opens.

Power-Up Bands are necessary for tracking your progress and rankings in Super Nintendo World, allowing you to collect coins from blocks, stamps from around the land, and also complete Key Challenges. This last one is the most significant and substantial component of the Power-Up Bands.

Simply put, you must buy the Power-Up Band to get the full Super Nintendo World experience. If you only purchase one souvenir, make it the Power-Up Band. Buy at least one for your party–do NOT skip it to save money. Ideally, you should purchase one Power-Up Band for every child in your party so they can simultaneously play the minigames.

visit super mario world

Play the Key Challenges – There are four Key Challenges in Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood that can be played with the aforementioned Power-Up Bands. You need to beat three of these to enter the boss fight with Bowser Jr. Here are the Key Challenge options:

Piranha Plant Nap Mishap – This easy to moderate level challenge puts you and a team together to run around and turn off ringing alarm clocks to prevent a gigantic Piranha Plant from waking up.

Goomba Crazy Crank – In this easier challenge, you turn a crank as fast as possible to knock a running Goomba down from a spinning wheel.

Koopa Troopa POWer Punch – This moderately difficult challenge involves a single guest timing their POW Block punch at the right moment so a spinning shell exits a tunnel and hits the POW Block.

Thwomp Power Panel Panic – This moderate or extremely difficult challenges has one or multiple guests flipping switches to a uniform color scheme before time is up and the Thwomp strikes down.

visit super mario world

Play Minigames Multiple Times – These games have multiple difficulties, with the higher levels being unlocked by playing once and beating it. So be mindful of that because, for example, you might develop a poor sense of timing if you’re watching someone else play Koopa Troopa POWer Punch on the higher difficulty level and you start on the lower level.

Or, you might play the Thwomp Power Panel Panic on easy mode with multiple people, beat it with ease, become overconfident in your abilities as a result, and get absolutely thwomped when you play the harder mode by yourself. Not that I speak from experience or anything. (Speaking of which, it is possible to lose at any of these games!)

visit super mario world

Don’t Skip Shadow Showdown – Once you collect three Keys, you can battle Bowser Jr. in the Shadow Showdown. This boss fight uses motion capture technology to allow groups of guests to take on Bowser Jr. and recover the Golden Mushroom. Shadow Showdown is a ton of fun and totally chaotic!

Bowser Jr. Shadow Showdown has longer lines later in the day, as that’s when an increasing number of people are eligible for the boss fight. This is one big reason why it’s advantageous to knock out three Key Challenges early–then do Shadow Showdown with little (if any) wait!

visit super mario world

Scope Out Toadstool Cafe Early  – It’s also a good idea to check out the dining scene before the lunch rush. We don’t recommend eating here too early, but we do recommend figuring out whether it’s open access or if you need to go on the waitlist.

We’ve found that return time estimates for Toadstool Cafe to be  highly inaccurate . On two different occasions, our quoted return time was off by an hour, and we were called back way early. If this happens while you’re in line for Mario Kart or something else, you should be able to text back and let Chef Toad’s team know that you’ll be late. See our Toadstool Cafe Review for menu recommendations & food photos .

Alternative Option: Power Up Cafe – Due to the overwhelming popularity of Toadstool Cafe inside the land, Universal Studios Hollywood opened a second snack spot outside the land in February 2024. Located on the upper lot by the park’s entrance, Power Up Cafe sells light bites and bubbly drinks for park-goers seeking out a quick meal or snack–such as mushroom-shaped calzones or Fire Flower-shaped pretzels.

The footprint of Power is considerably smaller than Toadstool Cafe, and is an on-the-go option rather than a counter service restaurant. However, it’s a good alternative if you’re more concerned about cute and photogenic food for Instagram photos or whatever, since Power Up Cafe is faster and more efficient. There’s neon signage and a fun mural outside and inside, and the menu items are equally adorable.

Power Up Cafe is a solid ‘consolation prize’ if you can’t snag a spot at Toadstool Cafe. It’s also a good alternative if you don’t want to waste a ton of time and would prefer to do all of the minigames in Super Nintendo World, ride Mario Kart, and do other attractions in Universal Studios Hollywood outside the land. Toadstool Cafe is fun, but it’s the one thing we’d skip if forced to choose.

Try the Test Kart  – There has been a lot of rage-bait surrounding sightlines and size issues with Super Nintendo World. The former is beyond the scope of this post (but a total non-issue); the latter is within the scope of this scope, and an actual issue but a highly exaggerated one.

Like all modern Universal attractions, Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge has a complete containment policy, meaning that it’s a slow-moving dark ride with a relatively restrictive restraint system. The attraction’s guidelines state that the ride may not accommodate guests whose waistlines are larger than 40 inches. This, unsurprisingly, resulted in widespread online outrage.

In that sentence,  may not  is really doing the heavy lifting. Unlike the Secret Life of Pets: Off the Leash, which we consider  one of the best dark rides of all time , Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge is quite accommodating–the guidelines are unquestionably on the conservative side. Nevertheless, you should try out the test seat if you’re a larger-sized guest to avoid embarrassment (and waiting in a long line for nothing). It’s off to the right, in a somewhat-secluded spot inside the attraction entrance.

visit super mario world

Use Single Rider at Mario Kart  – Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge is one of the most envelope-pushing and ambitious attractions I’ve ever experienced in any theme park. Like the best Mario Kart courses, it’s the perfect mixture of frustrating, fun, and addictive.

You want to keep coming back, seeing what you missed before, and improving your results. To that end, we’d encourage you to take advantage of the Single Rider line, located inside the main entrance of the attraction and up the stairs to the right, to allow you to replay the ride repeatedly with significantly shorter wait times. I have  many, many  more thoughts about this attraction, and you can read them–and see more–in our spoiler-free Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge Ride Review .

visit super mario world

Be Mindful of Meet & Greet Times  – Mario and Luigi meet together in the middle of Super Nintendo World, with Princess Peach meeting near the entrance to the land by her castle. All of these characters are articulated and will say prerecorded dialogue. It’s a cute effect, although one that results in hilarious mid-blink photos of “drunk Mario” on occasion.

If meet & greets are important, we highly recommend lining up for these characters shortly  before  their appearances start. On several occasions, we’ve seen their lines cut shortly before or after the characters themselves appear. (Hopefully character appearances become more frequent–we found them to be way too staggered to keep up with guest demand.)

visit super mario world

Stay Late  – Just as Californians are fashionably late to everything, guests to Universal Studios Hollywood tend to leave early. This one may not be the locals so much as it is the tourists, and is especially common when the sun goes down and that crisp California air sends people towards the exits.

This dynamic has continued thus far with Super Nintendo World, but it remains to be seen whether it continues when the Virtual Line and timed entry to access the land is in widespread use. It could be the case that those will be used to redistribute crowds throughout the day, with guests who purchase regular tickets having no option but to wait for their turn to see Super Nintendo World. We’ll be watching this one, but for now, our tentative advice is to outlast the crowd, as evening is when Universal Studios Hollywood tends to be the least busy. (You’ll want to leave late to wait out the Los Angeles traffic, anyway!)

visit super mario world

Ultimately, there’s a lot to love about Super Nintendo World and it exceeded my expectations as a whole. The land isn’t perfect, and although I don’t have any issue with the sightlines and other assorted controversies, elements of the land at Universal Studios Hollywood do feel rushed and sloppy–even after a lot was fixed during the technical rehearsals.

The good news is that there’s a fantastic foundation with Super Nintendo World, and everything else can and will evolve over time, becoming better as technology catches up to ambitions and Universal learns what does and doesn’t work. Expansion would also greatly benefit the area, preventing the crowds from overwhelming. Here’s hoping we see that down the road, and Universal finds a way to fit Donkey Kong Mine Cart Madness–or something else–into an adjacent area.

Despite its small size, Super Nintendo World packs a powerful punch and delivers an immense amount of satisfaction and fun, leaving guests wanting more in the best way possible. It’s better to crave more after a lengthy experience than to leave early, underwhelmed and disappointed.

We are planning a two day trip and plan to do as many of the power up challenges on day 1. Do the challenges carry over to the following day to allow access to Bowsers Castle or do we need to do them on the same day of riding?

' src=

I was re-reading your posts ahead of our trip tomorrow, and I wanted to let you know that you can purchase the Mario bands at the Mario store at city walk.

' src=

great guide… however I disagree on encouraging the single rider (SR) line for Mario Kart. 3 months later with everyone thinking this is the trick… SR waits are as long as standby which is dumb considering SR is quite the miserable experience.

The main reason against recommending it is 50%+ of the brilliant art work/theming is in the standard line and you also get instructions how to play. The line constantly constantly moves and its fun.

SR stands still in batches. A line just over 1up factory is 40-60 min and anything rounding toward thwomp is 60-100 min.

let’s stop encouraging people to get less of the intended ride experience, have a meaningless miserable wait in SR only to get to ride and have no clue what to do.

The other issue w families and large groups taking SR is in emergency situations you are all in different cars. Mario Kart gets evacuated every few days…. want to traumatize your kid solo on an evacuation?

lastly single riders stand single file and for example on the steps take one step and are a few steps before and behind the next single riders…. groups in SR all bunch up making the line 2-3x longer than it appears.

They are now just shutting down SR when it gets out of control leaving true single riders looking to repeat ride w power bands impossible. lets get smart about promoting what is no longer true please

Thanks for the tips! We have Universal Express pass tickets which it looks like means we don’t need a reservation to get in to the land. Any suggestions for what time of day would be best to visit (it’s me and two kids and we’re going on the last Thursday of March if that matters!). Thanks!

' src=

Hey Tom, how long do you think Supernintendo world will take if we arrive for early access?

' src=

Hey Tom – we’re staying in San Clemente for 2 weeks this summer and we’d like to do Universal for a day. Getting another hotel room near Universal isn’t a realistic option for us, so I’m wondering what time you would advise leaving San Clemente to get to Universal for early opening. I’ve tried Google Maps, but it’s hard to figure out because of the drastic changes in traffic throughout the day. Thanks!

' src=

I’d budget at least 2 hours to the commute. The problem is that the worst of the rush hour traffic you’ll encounter is *in* Los Angeles, on the final third of your trip. You shouldn’t encounter much at all on the first half (or more). The only way to avoid the LA traffic is to leave super early…but that’ll probably put you there too early. I guess you could always do breakfast in CityWalk or something?

' src=

Do you have an idea of when this land will open in Universal Florida?

Epic Universe is currently slated to open in Summer 2025.

' src=

Tom – with the early entry pass, is the ride open at that early time so you can ride it with much shorter wait before it opens to everyone else?

' src=

Gonna read now- Thanks Tom. Will be hitting this for one full day then Disneyland for 3 days.

Will likely be visiting in August, will get those bands for kids at least. Do you have a link ( no zelda pun intended) for a universal Hollywood day planner?

We have this for comprehensive planning: https://www.disneytouristblog.com/universal-studios-hollywood-planning-guide/

No step-by-step itinerary because it didn’t seem necessary in the past. Now that SNW is opening, I’ll wait a couple months for the dust to settle on that and then start testing approaches.

Complete guide to Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood

Tarah Chieffi

When Mario Bros. made its arcade debut in 1983, an 8-bit star was born. Though Mario had made appearances in a handful of Nintendo games before getting his very own video game, he – along with his brother Luigi – stole the hearts of video game fans everywhere and the release kick-started one of the most iconic gaming franchises ever created.

In the four decades since, kids of all ages have interacted with Mario's world on two-dimensional screens.

Now, you can step through the screen and into a living, breathing, four-dimensional world with Mario, Luigi and the whole gang at Universal Studios Hollywood's Super Nintendo World.

visit super mario world

As of Feb. 17, the land is officially open to the public and welcoming guests into the Mushroom Kingdom.

Ready to play? Here's everything you need to know.

What is Super Nintendo World?

Super Nintendo World is Universal Studios Hollywood's newest land.

As the name suggests, the land is themed around popular Nintendo games and characters — most notably Mario, Luigi and Princess Peach. Of course, no video game would be complete without a big, bad villain, and you'll find Bowser's evil presence looming in the land, as well.

visit super mario world

Upon walking through the warp pipe into Super Nintendo World, the land's immersive theming effectively makes you a video game character. There are points to score, achievements to unlock and bad guys to overcome, spanning a multitude of games from the Super Mario multiverse.

Whether you want to race to victory in a real-life Mario Kart game, visit Bowser's Castle or dine at Toadstool Cafe, there are plenty of ways to interact with the various elements of the land during your visit.

Getting into Super Nintendo World

Entry to Super Nintendo World is included with your regular admission to Universal Studios Hollywood. During the busy weeks (and maybe months) after the land's Feb. 17 opening, you may need to make a virtual line reservation to enter.

If the land is at capacity during your visit, a virtual line system will be in place. After you enter the park, you can check the Universal Studios Hollywood app to find out if you need a spot in the virtual line to enter the land. If a virtual line is in place, you'll be able to choose a time to return to the land and you can enjoy the rest of the park until it's time to "warp" over to Super Nintendo World.

Ticketholders and annual pass holders with Universal Express skip-the-line access as well as guests on a VIP tour can use their Universal Express benefits to enter Super Nintendo World once per day if the land is using the reservation system. If the land isn't at capacity, you can enter the land without a reservation and press start on your day of fun.

You can also buy your way into Super Nintendo World an hour before it opens to other guests by adding a Super Nintendo World Early Access Ticket to your regular admission.

The prices vary by day but should generally be between $20 and $25, and allow entry to the land one hour before the park's opening. You'll also get Universal Express access to the Studio Tour before 11 a.m. on the day of your visit.

Rides at Super Nintendo World

The only ride at Super Nintendo World is Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge. To get to the ride, you must pass through the imposing Bowser's Castle. The queue winds through the corridors of his castle, showcasing Mario Kart trophies, memorabilia and evidence of Bowser's plan to defeat Team Mario along the way.

visit super mario world

This interactive, multisensory ride puts you behind the wheel in a high-stakes Mario Kart race. Just like in the Mario Kart game you've played at home, you can race through familiar courses, throw turtle shells and fight to beat Team Bowser.

The real-life version relies on a mix of projection mapping technology, colorful physical set pieces and augmented reality goggles to bring the popular racing game to life. The ride doesn't move fast like a roller coaster. It is relatively slow in speed compared to many theme park thrill rides, but the technology makes the ride feel like a high-speed race.

visit super mario world

Each car holds four riders, and everyone in your car has to work together to earn enough coins to beat Team Bowser.

How do you earn coins? By successfully "steering" your car in the right direction and throwing turtle shells at the bad guys.

It can be a little tricky at first using the steering wheel to maneuver the car, but to throw turtle shells you simply look at the bad guy you are going for and hit the trigger on your steering wheel. Because Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge puts you in the driver's seat, the outcome changes every time you race.

You must be 40 inches tall to ride Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge and 48 inches tall to ride without a supervising adult.

Related: How Universal is stepping out of the mouse's shadow to become the hottest theme park

Just because Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge is the only ride in Super Nintendo World right now doesn't necessarily mean that will always be the case. Universal Studios Japan's version of the land has a second ride called Yoshi's Adventure and a Donkey Kong-themed roller coaster is scheduled to open in 2024.

It is expected that Super Nintendo World at Universal's new Epic Universe in Orlando will also have all three of these rides when it opens in 2025.

Activities at Super Nintendo World

Like any good video game, Super Nintendo World follows a storyline.

As soon as you walk through the warp pipe and step into the land, it is your mission to retrieve the golden mushroom that Bowser Jr. has stolen from Princess Peach's castle. To complete your mission, you'll need to collect keys from around the land, which you can earn by playing a series of interactive games.

visit super mario world

There are four games to choose from, and you need to beat three of them in order to enter Bowser Jr.'s lair for the final boss battle. If you can beat Bowser Jr., the golden mushroom will be restored to its rightful owner, and you'll emerge from his lair victorious.

Each game will have you facing off against various Nintendo baddies like Goomba, Koopa Troopa, Piranha Plant and Thwomp. Some can be done on your own and others are easier to complete with a team.

visit super mario world

Completing these "key challenges" isn't the only way to interact with Super Nintendo World. Almost everything you see is meant to be explored or played with ... and all of these things can help you earn stamps that will boost your score. Meet Mario and Luigi? You earn a stamp. Punch a pow block? You earn a stamp. Earn a top score on Mario Kart? You earn a stamp.

To earn coins and stamps, compete in key challenges and keep score within the land, you'll need to purchase a Power-Up Band. Power-Up Bands are available at kiosks inside the land or at Super Nintendo World retail locations inside the park and at CityWalk.

visit super mario world

There are six character designs to choose from and each band costs $40. The character you choose determines your "team" in the land. Anyone playing that day with the same Power-Up Band design as yours is now your teammate. You can see how your team stacks up against other teams on the scoreboards or in the app.

You don't need a Power-Up Band to enjoy the land, but it is well worth the money if you want to fully experience the land and compete with your friends and family to see who can get the highest score.

Dining at Super Nintendo World

Toadstool Cafe is Super Nintendo World's signature restaurant and each item on the menu is almost as adorable as Chef Toad himself. Housed within a giant red-and-white mushroom, you can watch Chef Toad preparing dishes like a Piranha Plant Caprese Salad, Mario Burger and Fire Flower Spaghetti & Meatballs on video screens around the restaurant.

visit super mario world

Keep your eyes on the screens while you dine, because Bowser may make a surprise appearance during your visit.

visit super mario world

For dessert, you can have Question Block Tiramisu, Mt. Beanpole Cake or a Princess Peach Cupcake, and there is also a specialty Super Star Lemon Squash boba drink available, as well as water and soft drinks. There are even specialty souvenir cups you can bring home with you.

Shopping at Super Nintendo World

visit super mario world

You can find Super Nintendo World merchandise at the 1-Up Factory inside the land or at the Super Nintendo World store at CityWalk or inside the park at the Character Shop and the Feature Presentation Shop. You'll find everything from plush toy versions of the characters in the land to apparel, mugs, home decor and more.

Super Nintendo World tips and secrets

visit super mario world

  • There is no "right way" to experience Super Nintendo World. The land is meant to be explored. If you find a doorway, staircase or anything else that looks as if it's meant to be discovered, give it a try. You never know what surprises you may find.
  • You can use the Super Nintendo World map in the Universal Studios Hollywood app to find the interactive elements, key challenges and character meet-and-greets within the land.
  • When you get into your Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge ride vehicle, remember to tap your Power-Up Band on the steering wheel. This will sync up the points you score on the ride with your daily total so you can see how you rank against your friends and family.
  • If you have a Nintendo Switch, you can tap your Power-Up Band to your Switch to unlock exclusive content.
  • There are four "M" symbols on walls throughout the land. Tap your Power-Up Band over the symbol to discover hidden 8-bit characters from the original Super Mario Bros.
  • If you follow the staircase to the left of the entrance to Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge, you'll find binoculars that look out over the land. They show a real-time feed of the land with a few surprises sprinkled in. Zoom in on the characters and objects you see to reveal Easter eggs and earn stamps.
  • Plan to spend at least two to three hours exploring Super Nintendo World. You can always stay longer, but that is the minimum amount of time you need to experience all the land has to offer.

Bottom line

Universal Studios Hollywood's new Super Nintendo World is colorful, vibrant and just plain joyful.

All around you, people are having fun living out their video game dreams and the feeling is infectious. You'll find that you can't walk past a question block without punching it and that you want to ride Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge over and over again to see if you can beat your previous score.

Once you start playing a video game, it's hard to stop. At Super Nintendo World, you don't have to. The land is the game and you are the player. And this time, it's not "game over" until you say so.

Heading to Super Nintendo World? Tips for your first Universal Studios Hollywood visit

visit super mario world

Super Nintendo World  is sure to draw a whole new legion of fans to Universal Studios Hollywood, just like the Wizarding World of Harry Potter did years ago.

Planners like me will already have lists of things they want to see and do, but what about things to avoid? That's just as important for first-time guests, especially when it comes to crowds and queues.

You can skip most long lines with a  Universal Express pass or VIP Experience , starting at $199 and $369 respectively, but you don't need to spend anything to save time and energy at the Southern California park.

Here's what NOT to do at Universal Studios Hollywood as America's first Super Nintendo World opens:

America's first Super Nintendo World: I got a sneak peek at Universal Studios Hollywood. Here's what it's like.

1. Visit during peak times

Universal Studios Hollywood is open every day of the year. Don't visit when everyone else does. If possible, try to avoid long weekends, spring and summer breaks and busy holidays.

You can check the  ticket calendar on the park's website and look for the dates with the cheapest admission, $109. Those are safe bets for avoiding the biggest crowds.

Universal Studios Hollywood v. Universal Orlando: What's the difference?

2. Buy tickets at the gate

Not only does this waste precious time, but buying tickets at the gate costs more than buying them in advance on  Universal's website .

Guests purchasing online also get the option to buy early access to Super Nintendo World , which lets them into the land a full hour before most guests. An Express pass to the popular World-Famous Studio Tour is also included with this add-on perk. Prices start at $20. Quantities are limited and subject to availability, and regular park admission is still required.

3. Go in without a plan

I am all for being in the moment, but some planning is required to navigate Universal Studios Hollywood, which is divided into two main levels – Upper Lot and Lower Lot. If you don't plan accordingly, you can waste a lot of time riding the long series of escalators or elevators between the two levels.

Many guests used to start the day on Upper Lot, where the main entrance, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and the World-Famous Studio Tour are located, while savvy guests headed to Lower Lot first. Now with Super Nintendo World located in Lower Lot, either level can be busy.

Just pick one and try to do everything you can there before moving on to the next lot, instead of going back and forth.

4. Skip Universal's app

The best way to keep track of wait times and show times is to use the free Universal Studios Hollywood app. You can also use the app to join the virtual queue for The Secret Life of Pets from anywhere in the park, instead of having to go to the ride in person to get a return time.

Universal announces new theme park... in Texas

5. Dilly dally in Super Nintendo World

This is what you came for, so you may be inclined to slowly soak in the immersive theming or photograph everything you see as you enter. Put a pin on that. If you want to dine at Toadstool Cafe, walk up and get a reservation to save yourself a wait, then head straight for  Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge  because that line will only get longer. You can always take your time exploring the land afterward.

Note, depending on how busy the park is, reservations may sometimes be required to ride Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge, and there is no Express lane for the ride. On days when reservations are required, guests who purchased Universal Express won't need a reservation, but they will still need to wait in line.

Plus, if you miss out on anything the first time around, there will be plenty of other chances to visit: Super Nintendo World is coming to Universal Orlando Resort, too, Mark Woodbury, chairman and CEO of Universal Parks and Resorts officially announced this week.

6. Skip single-rider lanes

If you don't mind being split up from your party or you are traveling solo, you can save a ton of time using the single-rider line on most attractions , including Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge.

Last summer, it only took me 30 minutes to ride all three attractions in the Lower Lot as a single rider. I walked right onto Jurassic World – The Ride and waited less than five minutes each for Revenge of the Mummy – The Ride and TRANSFORMERS: The Ride-3D. I also saved 150 minutes of wait time on Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, spending only 10 minutes in line.

Sure, you miss out on seeing family and friends' reactions and some of the cool features built into attraction queues, but you can always talk about the experience afterward.

Halloween Horror Nights every night?: Universal plans to open year-round horror experience in Las Vegas

7. Skip child-switch

Every ride with a height requirement has a child-switch  option. Take advantage of this if you're traveling with other adults and kids who are either too small for the rides or who simply don't want to go on them.

You and the kids can wait in the child-switch room while others in your party go on the ride. When they come out, they can watch the kids while you enjoy the ride without having to wait through the entire queue again.

Pattl LaBelle, Maren Morris: Universal Studios Florida brings in big names for Mardi Gras

8. Skip the World-Famous Studio Tour

This is what puts the Hollywood in Universal Studios Hollywood. You can see actual sets and props from iconic films and TV shows. Plus the lengthy tram tour lets you rest your feet for a whole hour.

Everything You Need to Know About Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood

Here are the answers to your frequently asked questions about the new Mario-themed land at Universal Studios Hollywood.

Peach's Castle during a media preview of the Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Japa

It’s been a big year for Super Mario — one might even say 2023 has been powered up with a Super Mushroom. The Super Mario Bros. Movie , from Universal and Illumination, opens in theaters on April 5, and fans can actually step inside the Mushroom Kingdom (or at least the next best thing) by visiting Super Nintendo World, which opened at Universal Studios Hollywood earlier this year .

Super Nintendo World, a Mario -themed area of the Los Angeles-based theme park, is actually the second of its kind. The first Super Nintendo World opened at Universal Studios Japan in March 2021. (Two more, at Universal Orlando Resort and Universal Studios Singapore, are under construction.)

Before you say “let’s a-go,” here’s everything you need to know about Super Nintendo World.

How Do You Get to Super Nintendo World?

Super Nintendo World is a themed land within Universal Studios Hollywood, located in Los Angeles, California. It’s a little smaller than its Tokyo counterpart, but you’ll hardly notice once you walk through a giant green pipe (located between the Jurassic World area and Transformers: The Ride) and find yourself in the middle of a real-life Mario level.

Super Nintendo World is just one part of the Universal Studios Hollywood experience, and you can theoretically visit the land with just your normal admission ticket to the park. One-day tickets start at $109 . However, a specific timed reservation is suggested, and there are ways to make your Super Nintendo World experience even better:

How Do You Get Super Nintendo World Reservations?

staff members stand by during a media preview of the Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Japan

While you may be able to just walk into Super Nintendo World, it’s recommended that you make a virtual line reservation after you’ve bought your tickets and have arrived at the park. (More details about virtual lines can be found here .) This assures that you’ll be able to enter the land at a specific time, as it’s possible the space might be too crowded for unscheduled walk-ins. Guests with Universal Express and VIP privileges will have reservation-free entry into Super Nintendo World once per day (after 3 p.m. for Platinum Pass members).

You can also, for an additional fee, purchase early access tickets that will let you access Super Nintendo World an hour prior to Universal Studios Hollywood’s opening!

What Time Does Super Nintendo World Open?

Super Nintendo World opened its doors to the public in February of this year following a soft opening the previous month. Now, the park is accessible during Universal Studios Hollywood’s normal hours, which are 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Friday through Monday, and 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday through Thursday. (Unless, of course, you have early access tickets, in which case you can arrive one hour earlier and start punching blocks.)

How Many Rides Are in Super Nintendo World?

There is only one ride at Universal Studios Hollywood’s Super Nintendo World. Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge puts parkgoers inside of the iconic racing video game series, as they’ll put on special goggles that help bring all the shell-throwing, banana-peel-dropping action to life. Working as a team alongside Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach, riders will steer their karts through all sorts of vibrant courses in an attempt to best Team Bowser and win the Golden Cup.

(Yoshi’s Adventure, a second ride present at Universal Studios Tokyo, is not part of the Hollywood version of Super Nintendo World.)

Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge may be the only true ride at the land, but there are tons of other activities. Visitors to Super Nintendo World are encouraged to purchase a Power-Up Band from one of the vending machines near the park entrance. Though optional, this watch-like accessory (available in six styles, each themed to a different Mario character) will track how many coins the wearer collects from the ? Blocks found around the land, record badges they win from activities, and mark how well they do at the four Key Challenges inside the land. The Key Challenges, which are basically like real-life minigames, are Goomba Crazy Crank, Piranha Plant Nap Mishap, Koopa Troopa POWer Punch, and Thwomp Power Panel Panic.

There are also character meet and greets, exclusive merchandise to purchase, and food!

What Food Is There at Super Nintendo World?

Greeters await people for lunch at the Toadstool Cafe at Super Nintendo World

Mario may get by consuming just Super Mushrooms and Power Stars, but chances are you’ll need something a bit more… substantial. Toadstool Cafe, located near the back of Super Nintendo World, had you covered, with a full menu of elaborate (and delicious!) entries that fit right into the Super Mario Universe. Guests can enjoy meals like Fire Flower Spaghetti & Meatballs, Piranha Plant Caprese, and ? Block Tiramisu.

During the slow descent from the upper lot to the lower lot at Universal Studios Hollywood , visitors can catch a tantalizing glimpse of a world Super Mario fans could once only see on screens. Piranha plants rise above lush green hills. Golden coins twirl in the sunlight. Further back, Bowser’s menacing face looms from a gray castle. Welcome to Super Nintendo World.

Universal Studios Hollywood’s Super Nintendo World is the second on the planet and the first of its kind stateside—the very first to debut, at Universal Studios Japan , opened in 2021. The next will be constructed at Universal Orlando Resort and is set to begin welcoming visitors in early 2025. California’s Super Nintendo World officially opened doors last Friday, February 17, amid the other attractions at Universal Studios like the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and the Jurassic World ride. It is a nostalgic blast to the past for Mario super fans. Here’s everything we know about the latest Super Nintendo World so far.

Where is Super Nintendo World?

The entrance to Mario Kart at Super Nintendo World Hollywood

Visitors will be able to access Super Nintendo World during Universal Studios’ normal operating hours.

Courtesy of Michael Owen Baker/Super Nintendo World

Super Nintendo World is located within Universal Studio Hollywood in the northwestern corner of the park just beyond the Jurassic World and The Mummy Rides. In keeping with the Mario theme, guests must go through a warp pipe to enter the Super Nintendo area.

How to visit Super Nintendo World

Guests can visit Super Nintendo World during Universal Studio Hollywood’s regular operating hours from Friday through Monday from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and Tuesday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Access to the area is included with admission to Universal Studios (which will set visitors back $109). However, an early access pass to Super Nintendo World can be purchased for $20; it allows access to the park one hour before other visitors arrive—best to get a head start on those notoriously long theme park lines.

Things to do at Super Nintendo World

Upon entering Super Nintendo World, one of the first things guests will see is a recreation of Princess Peach’s castle. There aren’t any interactive elements of the castle, but it does serve as the perfect selfie backdrop. Super Nintendo World isn’t simply a place to marvel at all the cute Mario-themed constructions in the park—there’s a quest to complete. The story goes that Bowser Jr. has stolen three golden keys from the Mushroom Kingdom and visitors need to get them back in order to unlock the final boss battle with Bowser Jr. himself. In order to gain keys, guests can participate in four different mini-games: Goomba Crazy Crank, Piranha Plant Nap Mishap, Thwomp Panel Panic, and Koopa Troopa POWer Punch.

Buy a Power-Up Band

At the 1Up Factory , which sells all sorts of Super Nintendo–themed memorabilia and souvenirs, you’ll want to pick up a Power-Up Band, available for $40 a pop. There are six different types of character-themed bands to choose from—Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Yoshi, Toad, and Princess Daisy. Comparisons have been drawn between the Power-Up Bands and the wands at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. But while wands activate interactive elements that aren’t essential to the experience, in Super Nintendo World, you’ll miss out on the majority of the fun if you don’t have a Power-Up Band, though they’re not required to enter the area. Keep in mind that mini-games are only available to those who do have Power-Up Bands.

Super Mario fans can enjoy some of their favorite elements of the series in real life.

The characters that players choose coincides with the “team” they will be on during their time in the area. Bands also interact with various features around Super Nintendo World. With the band, players can collect coins in an addictive competition; coins can be accrued through games or by slamming bricks and ? blocks located throughout Mario’s land. Scores can be kept track of in the Universal app and are also displayed in large terminals around the area.

Although bands aren’t necessary to enjoy the adorable charms of Super Nintendo World, if guests want to rack up some points, hit blocks, or play the key challenges, they’ll need one.

Play Mario Kart IRL

In addition to the main “quest,” there’s also a ride—Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge, a Mario Kart –inspired experience (which has garnered criticism for its size restrictions). Bowser’s Challenge is an augmented reality attraction that feels more like a video game than a ride. On board a four-person go-kart, riders wear a plastic Mario cap and clip on an augmented reality visor. Through that visor, other racers see stars flying past, as Bowser’s minions swarm around riders who must steer and fire turtle shells at the enemy to gain coins. The coins aren’t just for show. Each ride is a contest with other karts, and the team with the most coins wins. Then the coins are added to riders’ total score on their Power-Up Bands.

Battle with Bowser Jr.

Once players accumulate enough keys and coins, they’ll get to a showdown with Bowser Jr. During this final boss battle, competitors turn into a shadow on a screen via augmented reality technology that is controlled by their actual movements. To win and defeat Bowser Jr., they must duck under Bullet Bills, punch Bomb-Ombs, and throw fireballs to complete the challenge.

Burger and salad served at Toadstool Cafe at Super Nintendo World Hollywood.

At Toadstool Cafe, diners can feast on Mario-themed dishes prepared by Chef Toad.

Where to eat at Super Nintendo World

At the Toadstool Cafe , there is a broad menu of Mushroom Kingdom–themed dishes and treats that verge on being too precious to eat. With a kitchen “led” by Chef Toad , almost everything on the menu either includes mushrooms or, more often, is shaped like a mushroom.

There are 250 seats available at this toadstool-shaped eatery, including faux-wood chairs and pink and white boots—the restaurant can serve around 4,000 patrons per day. Here, diners can chomp down on piranha plant–themed caprese salad, tiramisu adorned with a cookie decorated to resemble power-up blocks, fire flower spaghetti and meatballs, and Chef Toad’s signature short rib special dish.

And what’s a meal without a show? While they eat, visitors can watch their food being “cooked” via a three-paneled video screen as Chef Toad and his Mushroom People friends chop, sauté, and garnish dishes to perfection. But as with everything in Super Nintendo World, keep an eye out because even Chef Toad’s kitchen can fall prey to the Bowser’s plans.

21 Super Nintendo World Tips: Universal Studios Hollywood (Early Access Strategy Included)

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.

You love Super Mario, so you plan a trip to the new “Mario Land” during your Southern California vacation. But it isn’t as simple as buying a ticket and showing up. From virtual queues to Power Up Bands, there are some big things to know for your visit. Super Nintendo World is open at Universal Studios Hollywood and we went to check it out and get all the insider tips.

After you read this article, you will be all set for your visit… including being all set to be one of the first people in the land that day.

Super Nintendo World in Hollywood Studios is Now Open

Super Nintendo World is a “land” in Universal Studios Hollywood. Universal is one of several theme parks in Southern California . It is quickly becoming a top rival for Disneyland.

Hand holding a Universal Studios Ticket with Super Mario on it, in front of the actual entrance to Super Nintendo World in Universal Studios Hollywood

With the opening of Super Nintendo World, I feel like Universal is breaking out of its reputation for not being kid-friendly. Between this, The Secret Life of Pets, and the Despicable Me area, there is plenty to do at Universal Studios Hollywood for younger kids .

But today we are only going to focus on Super Nintendo World. This land can be a bit overwhelming. Between virtual queues, dining return times, and more, you need to do a bit of planning for your visit.

Don’t worry!

Our tips will make your visit, as Mario would say, “Fantastico!”

Things To Do When Planning Your Trip

Some of the most important tips to make sure your Super Nintendo World visit isn’t a “Bob-Omb” are about the initial planning of your trip. Here are five tips you will want to follow when planning your trip.

1. Buying Discount Tickets

You will want to spend a lot of money in Super Nintendo World. Your bank account may say you can’t. But, we can help you save some money on your admission to Universal Studios so that you have a little extra for a Mario hat.

My preferred travel partners at Get Away Today offer discounted tickets to Universal Studios Hollywood . The best deal is the 2-day ticket. Before, I used to believe that Universal is a one-day park, but with the addition of Super Nintendo World, I think you could easily go for two days.

Plus, if you also book 2 or more nights at a Southern California Hotel, you can use my code ThisCrazy10 to save even more.

2. Do This To Get In Super Nintendo World Before Anybody Else – Yes, While Planning Your Visit

Super Nintendo World is the new, hip land to be in at Universal Studios Hollywood. That means the small “world” gets super crowded.

Extra day free Disneyland ticket deal. Click to book

BUT – You can beat the crowds and get into the land before everyone else.

Picture of crowds in Super Nintendo World in Universal Studios Hollywood around 11:30 am

Here is how:

After you purchase your discounted Universal Tickets from Get Away Today , head to the Universal Studios Website to purchase a Super Nintendo World Early Access Ticket . These start at $20/person and get you into Super Nintendo World an hour before the official park opening. (This is amazing as Disneyland Hotel Guests only get 30 minutes Early Entry at Disneyland.)

This gives you a chance to meet characters, ride Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge, and start playing the games before the land officially opens.

This is a great way to beat the crowds, and avoid super long waits for the ride.

3. You Will Want To Download The Universal Studios App

Everything seems to have an app these days, and while the Universal Studios Hollywood App is not a must for more of the park (in my opinion) you will want it for your time in Super Nintendo World.

This is where you will be able to keep track of the games and coins you earn, as well as preview the Toadstool Cafe Menu .

4. Plan Out Transportation

If you are adding Universal to a Disneyland area vacation , you may need to figure out transportation to get up to the LA theme park. Especially if you don’t have a car.

While Uber or Lyft is always an option, my preferred option, as a family of 5, is to book private transport through Karmel Shuttle. You can purchase your transportation at a discount through Get Away Today when you buy your Universal Tickets, and then call Karmel to schedule your ride.

5. Measure Your Kiddos

Be sure to measure your kiddos before your visit. Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge has a minimum height requirement of 40″. Guests over 40″ but under 48″ must ride with an adult. That means for every child under 48″ that is able to ride, you need an adult to sit next to them.

Tips For During Your Visit To Super Nintendo World

You have booked your vacation and bought tickets and early access.

Well, your trip prep is reading the tips below so you can put them into practice during your trip.

1. Purchase Your Power-Up Band ASAP & Link To The App

If you are wanting to play the games and do the challenges in Super Nintendo World, you will want to purchase a Power-Up Band. The bands feature symbols representing some of your favorite Mario characters and let you earn coins and stamps throughout the land.

You can pick up a Power-Up Band for $40/each (at the time of this post) inside Super Nintendo World or at various locations inside Universal Studios Theme Park or the Universal City Walk.

visit super mario world

Once you purchase your band(s) you will use the Universal Studios Hollywood App to link your bands.

You will be able to check your progress and follow the challenges in the app.

INSIDER TIP: Behind the plastic with the Power-Up Band is a map of the land, with information and tips. Don’t throw these away.

2. Arrive Early

Whether you are using the Early Access or just visiting during normal park hours, you will want to arrive early. I suggest arriving at least 30 minutes before the park opening or your Early Access time.

This will give you time to get through security and to the land. It is located on the Lower Lot so it is a bit away from the park entrance.

During our most recent visit, we arrived just before 6 am for our Super Nintendo World Early Access and were first in line for parking. It was a good thing as they started scanning us in at 6:15. At 6:30, they started walking us down to the lower lot. We were in the land by 6:50 am.

3. Super Nintendo World May Utilize A Virtual Queue

visit super mario world

With the land being in high demand, Universal may utilize a virtual line for entering Super Nintendo World.

You can join the Virtual Line through the Universal App once it is activated for the day. When it is your turn, you will be able to enter the land, but once you leave, you will not be able to rejoin the virtual queue, so be sure to do it all!

For those not utilizing the Universal App, you can go to the kiosks (located in the alley to the right of the Transformers entrance) to get in the virtual queue.

visit super mario world

INSIDER TIP: Guests who purchase Universal’s Express Pass receive one entry without needing the Virtual Line when it is in place. This is also true for the VIP Guided Tours/Experiences.

4. Use Early Access Wisely

If you took my advice and purchased the Early Access, be sure to use that time wisely. You will want to use that time to meet characters and ride Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge. The ride itself is not eligible for Express Pass, so if you wait, you may end up with a 120-180 minute wait as we saw on the app.

Universal App showing a wait time of 120 minutes for the Mario Kart ride

The only way to get express access to the ride is by doing the VIP Experience, which is a pretty penny, but may be worth it. You can also book the VIP experiences through Get Away Today .

5. What To Know About Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge

Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge is the only ride in Super Nintendo World. This means it can be quite popular, as mentioned above.

This ride is a dark ride mixed with a Virtual Reality version of a Super Mario Kart video game.

visit super mario world

A few things to know about this ride:

The Ride is Not Super Plus-Size Friendly

The ride may not accommodate larger guests. Before you get in line, if you enter the tunnel for the attraction, directly to the right, there is a test seat. This seat is semi-blocked to make it more private.

Test seat for Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge ride

If you have big hips or a waist circumference over 40″, I highly suggest testing the seat out. The seat is off to the side right as you enter through the tunnel to the ride.

You will need the light to turn green when you pull the lap bar down (it doesn’t lock in place on the test seat) to know that you will fit in the ride vehicles. (PS- I was able to fit as a plus-sized, large-hipped woman.)

The Ride is Fairly Slow

I think a lot of guests expected a ride that was fast-paced, seeing as it is Mario Kart. However, the ride moves pretty slowly, and the action takes place inside the VR shields.

visit super mario world

Watch the Instruction Video

One thing that was a bit confusing about the ride, during the Queue, you end up in a room with all the racer outfits. Also in this room… they will show cartoon videos of how to put on your cap, and VR visor, and do the ride. This does not have spoken instructions, so many in our group missed the instructions because there was so much to look at.

NOTE: The video may not be showing if the ride is “walk-on” during Early Access

You Will Earn Coins During The Ride

Remember those Power-Up Bands and how you linked them to the app? You will earn coins while riding and playing the VR game during Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge.

To link your band, tap it to the steering wheel after boarding the ride.

6. Super Nintendo World Is Like Being In The Video Game

Yes, the ride is like being in a video game, but really, so is the entire land. All throughout the land, you will find Punch Blocks, challenges, and more.

Family playing one of the challenges in Super Nintendo World to earn coins

While the lines for the challenges can seem super long, they move really fast. These are a great way to pass the time while waiting for your return time at Toadstool Cafe.

UPDATE: We found that certain games lines moved faster. Also, we went on a Saturday in the summer, and the lines were much longer than when I went on a weekday during the school year.

7. How To Eat At Toadstool Cafe

Toadstool Cafe is a unique (and fun) dining experience in Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood. But being the only dining option in the land, it is also quite busy.

The Luigi Burger at Toadstool Face is actually a Pesto Grilled Chicken Sandwich

Due to popularity, they have now added virtual dining reservations for Toadstool Cafe. You will need to scan the QR at the front of the cafe to get a time.

visit super mario world

I scanned it at about 30 minutes into Early Access and all times were already for after 1:30 pm.

(Insider tip I learned… if your camera can scan this QR code from the photo above, you can use it to access the dining wait list/reservation from anywhere.)

During our most recent visit, the return times were full within 5 minutes of the general guests entering the land (8:05 am) so definitely scan it during Early Access if possible.

visit super mario world

Inside Toadstool Cafe

Inside the cafe, you will get to order your food and drinks at the counter and then find a seat in the dining area.

You will get a number that you place on your table for when your order is ready.

visit super mario world

The meals were really good. Between our group we ordered all of the adult entrees and most of the starters and sides. The desserts were overly sweet and I could only eat a few bites of mine.

8. Meeting Characters at super Nintendo World: Universal Studios Hollywood

One of the draws of the land is that guests can meet Super Mario Characters… and they talk! You can meet Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach in the land.

visit super mario world

These lines can be quite long (I saw them at 30 minutes) but this may be good to fill time while waiting to go to the cafe.

They have added posted times for when the characters will be there. You will need to enter the line at least 20 minutes before the character is scheduled to appear if you want to make sure you will be able to see them.

visit super mario world

9. Using the App To Maximize Your Super Nintendo World Experience

You can use the Universal App to maximize your experience in Super Nintendo World. The App will guide you through challenges, has a map of the land, and will let you check your character scores and achievements.

When you put a name to your band in the app, it will be visible to others in the land, so be sure not too put too much personal info in the name. Because of this, two players (bands) cannot have the same name. So you may find even your first name and last inital are taken.

visit super mario world

In addition to the app, you can scan your Power-Up Band near the restrooms to check your status and your standing compared to other players (aka guests). (They don’t photograph well so no picture.)

10. Tips for Doing Punch Blocks in Super Nintendo World

Punch Blocks are located throughout the land. But don’t just start punch blocks willy-nilly.

Using the app, you can learn the different punch block combos, etc to score the most points and collect stamps to complete challenges.

Granted, most kids will want to just punch the blocks, and that is always an option, but just be aware that there is a more advanced use for the punch blocks.

visit super mario world

INSIDER TIP: Do not try and use the band itself to punch the blocks. You will need to use your fist. The Power-Up Band sensors break easily when slammed against the blocks, and there are no returns on the bands once purchased.

11. Stay In The Land Until You Are Done

Once you leave Super Nintendo World, you will not be able to re-enter the land. The only possible loophole is if you are able to enter the land without using the Virtual Queue/Line.

Since you most likely cannot tell the future, I definitely suggest staying in the land until you have experienced everything you want to do.

INSIDER TIP: If you purchase Universal’s Express Pass (which I highly recommend) you can enter the land once per day without a virtual access return time.

How To Maximize Early Access Into Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood

As mentioned above, I highly suggest purchasing the Early Access to Super Nintendo World. The Early Access starts at $20/person (price changes by date) and gets you into Super Nintendo World a full hour before the parks open.

But you can easily squander away an hour if you aren’t careful. Here are my best tips to make the most of your Early Access Hour in Super Nintendo World.

1. Make sure to have your Early Access easily accessible

While you can have your Early Access linked in your Universal App, we printed ours out and I am glad we did. The scanners were having issues scanning some of the Early Access off the phones. I definitely suggest having printed copies if possible.

2. Arrive to the Parks at least an hour before early Access begins

We were staying in Anaheim during our visit, and while it wasn’t fun waking up to head out by 5:00 in the morning, it was 100% worth it. We were able to avoid major freeway traffic and actually reached the theme park parking by 5:45 am. We were first in line for parking.

After parking, we were able to use the restroom, and stroll down City Walk, get through security and even snap some photos before heading to the gates.

visit super mario world

3. Keep Your Early Access Tickets Handy

Once you walk towards the lower lot (we were led that way around 6:30 am), there will be a second checkpoint for Early Access. Be prepared for them to scan it again.

4. When you Enter the Land, Take Photos and Play a Game

Things get crowded later, so if you are wanting pictures without crowds, take them as soon as you enter the land for Early Access. I also suggest then hopping in line for a game or two.

5. How To Ride The Ride Twice

In order to be able to ride the ride twice, I suggest hopping on the ride about 20 minutes after entering the land. We did this and it was basically walk on. (The instructional video wasn’t even running because we moved through too fast.)

visit super mario world

After your first ride, the wait time may be upward of 45 minutes. Take a bit to do some more games, shop, etc.

At 5 minutes before park opening, hop in line to ride Mario Kart Bowser’s Challenge one more time. Yes, the line will most likely be around 45 minutes long, but it will quickly jump to two hours or more as soon as other guests file in.

Tips For Enjoying The Rest Of Your Time at Universal Studios Hollywood After Exiting Super Nintendo World

Once you have finished your time in Super Nintendo World, you will want to enjoy the rest of Universal Studios Hollywood. In order to get the most out of the park, I personally suggest making sure you have the Express Pass. This will allow you quicker access to most rides, one time, during the day.

Ad for Universal Studios Discounted Tickets

If you prefer, you can also buy discounted 2-day tickets from my partners at Get Away Today. This will give you an extra day to experience all of the fun in Universal Studios.

I had a blast at Super Nintendo World, and cannot wait to return with my entire family. While the land is small, there is a lot of fun to be had and I can’t wait to get back. Which of these tips did you find the most useful?

4 thoughts on “21 Super Nintendo World Tips: Universal Studios Hollywood (Early Access Strategy Included)”

Hello! Was your early access time at 0700? (to be led toward the lot around 0630) Thank you!

Yes. Ours was at 7:00 am. If Early Access is at 8 (park opening at 9) adjust the times by one hour.

I have Super Nintendo early access and VIP experience on the same day. My studio tour is at 11:15 a.m. I would like to spend most of the day in Super Nintendo World. I am thinking of arriving early to be among the first 50 people in line. Enter Nintendo World and stay there until my VIP tour. I wanted to come back to SNW after the tour. Do you think I can get access again? Are there any additional recommendations beyond this webpage based on my ticket purchases?

Your VIP tour will most likely qualify you for extra access later in the day. In fact, the VIP tour is the only way to skip the line for Mario Kart. 🙂 I think you have a great plan.

Universal Announces Super Nintendo World Will Open in Florida

Just as Universal Studios Hollywood was celebrating its opening of the Mario-themed park, it was announced that another iteration will be heading to Orlando.

visit super mario world

Universal's Super Nintendo World will be coming to it's Orlando resort.

Announced by Universal Parks & Resorts chairman and CEO Mark Woodbury during last week's grand opening celebration of Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood last week, the Orlando location will be the third in the world (with the first two being in Japan and California).

Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood has been described as a “innovative, immersive, and highly-anticipated themed land." Guests enter the colorful land via the brand’s signature green pipe entryway and are then fully immersed in the vibrant, 360-degree world of the beloved characters.

The land features headlining attraction Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge, inspired by the beloved video game series. The never before done attraction blends augmented reality (AR) with physical set pieces and projection mapping technology set along a moving ride track. A cornerstone of the land is interactive gameplay features which welcomes guests to punch the famed “?” blocks to collect digital golden coins and compete with other park goers.

Much like the video games, real time rankings are depicted on screens in the land. Other interactive games and the land’s signature restaurant, Toadstool Café, round out the experience.

No announcement on whether attractions from the Hollywood or Japan version will be replicated in Orlando has been made, but with the available land space more than one is anticipated.

When Super Nintendo World opens in Florida it will be a part of the upcoming, highly anticipated Epic Universe park, expected to open in 2025.

The news comes at a time of great expansion for the company that includes an upcoming Minion Land set to open summer 2023 at Universal Orlando Resort, an upcoming theme park in Texas , and a year-round immersive horror attraction in Las Vegas.

Universal’s Super Nintendo World is the play-focused theme park land for our times

Colorful mushrooms and fantastic architecture with green rolling hills at a theme park

A credit list into the hundreds — likely thousands — helped bring Universal Studios’ Super Nintendo World to life. And the details show it.

After walking through an oversize green warp pipe — and hearing the three-pronged digital zaps familiar to generations of “Super Mario Bros.” players — we’re in a brightly colored fantasy world that immediately feels interactive . Laid out like an obstacle course, with creatures, characters, moving platforms and mushrooms beckoning us to explore, everywhere we look we’re greeted with an inviting but loud contrast.

Plants chomp, a thumping, angry-faced block hovers and slams over a cave, and familiar-but-odd critters wander above us while our eyes adjust to an appealing clash of wintry and desert environments. We’re surrounded by brash digital colors, and yet Super Nintendo World feels made of this earth, as watercolor hills grace the entrance and sketch-like animations comprise some of the visuals.

As weird as all this may seem to those unfamiliar with the Mushroom Kingdom, the namesake land of the “Super Mario Bros.” games, it’s all presented in luminous, cheery tones that signal a sense of comfort. It’s larger-than-life mushrooms rather than trees that dot the center of the area, but they glisten and have a rubbery, bouncy sheen that beckons us closer and invites us to touch.

And for all the architecture, technology, engineering and landscape design behind Super Nintendo World, it’s rooted in the mind of one person: master game designer Shigeru Miyamoto.

This physical, real-world space that guests can now visit had its basis in the 8-bit games of the early 1980s, where pixel limitations meant Miyamoto and the team at Nintendo sought recognizable but off-kilter images to denote a sense of scale and fantasy. And Miyamoto’s own time in nature as a child played a part too.

“Looking back at my childhood experiences, the times I was running around, the times I was climbing things and went into dark areas — that was kind of trying to create the connection between my real-life experiences with the 8-bit world,” said Miyamoto via a translator. “So creating a dark space, or something you could climb to, those are the experiences we were trying to create within the limitations to make a game. Fast-forward to where we are now, those limitations are no longer there. What were limitations are just real.”

True-life inspiration became a fantasy interactive world, which has now come full circle to exist as a physical space, one housing an elaborate “Mario Kart”-inspired attraction , a triumphant creation where the tactile and the imaginary, built sets and the animated world, all spring to life on a track-driven ride that blurs the boundaries between game and reality. “Super Nintendo World” is not only the most game-focused theme park land in existence but a love letter to the medium that has, over the last 40 years, gradually come to dominate our lives and pop culture.

Buildings in Super Nintendo World.

Nintendo’s own Switch video game console has sold more than 122 million units, making it the third-best-selling console ever, and Super Nintendo World arrives weeks before a new “Super Mario Bros.” film and at a time when HBO’s game-based “The Last of Us” is the most popular series on television.

But more than that, games and game-like trappings have gradually infiltrated many aspects of our lives. Romances start by swiping right on apps, friendships are maintained by “hearting” photos and posts — the giving of digital points to one another — and the tech world’s latest fascination is virtual chatbots that have the ability to toy with our emotions. Play takes many forms, and today it defines us.

Super Nintendo World just may be the most family-friendly and accessible rendition of melding the physical and the digital. Immediately upon entering, and exiting the castle of Princess Peach and the painterly hills behind it, we spy bright yellow blocks that invite us to whack them.

Play, as Super Nintendo World is evidence of, can surprise even the most jaded among us. And it can even bring a smile to expert game masters. Miyamoto is the most celebrated game designer of our time, having not only created Mario and Luigi and the “Super Mario Bros.” franchise but having crafted or led the designs of “Donkey Kong,” “The Legend of Zelda,” “Pikmin” and much more.

First look: Universal Studios Hollywood powers up with Super Nintendo World

Universal Studios Hollywood’s Super Nintendo World -- home to the ride Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge -- promises to be the most interactive theme park land ever created.

Dec. 29, 2022

“It’s not enough to just have it look real,” Miyamoto said of the land.

“But you have to have people of all ages, from grandkids to grandparents, be able to be in the park and engage and interact with the park. What I had imagined was maybe we can create a space where people can just kind of enjoy rolling around and hanging out.

“That evolved into this interactive world, so when the people at Universal created the blocks for us, and made it so you can hit the blocks — at first glance, it just seems like a very simple action. I was like, ‘Maybe it’s not going to be fun?’ But when I actually did it, I loved it. It made me so happy. That’s why the interactive elements of this theme park are so crucial to the whole experience.”

What hitting random blocks in “Super Nintendo World” does — aside from generating various lights and audio cues — is instantly remove us from the mindset that we are entering somewhere to engage with games and are instead venturing into a park full of play. That is, we are suddenly divorced from the idea that games mean competition, which can lead to someone thinking, “I can’t do that,” and are instead focused on a purer vision of play, one that allows us to be silly and let our guard down.

Super Nintendo World, like Miyamoto’s games, then becomes a land of curiosity: I wonder if I can hit this, look through that or go up there. Often, we can.

This extends even to the ride Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge, the first major implementation of augmented reality on a North American theme park attraction. While we move at a relatively modest pace along a track, our visors provide a digital makeover to the rather elaborate, blacklight-enhanced theatrical sets, which lead us above and underwater, into a haunted passageway and onto “Mario Kart’s” famed multicolor Rainbow Road. As we traverse the track we’ll acquire shells, which we can press a button to throw at our opponents, our digital pal Mario, the environments or other karts, all while real-time animation responds to our actions.

visit super mario world

It’s a bit chaotic when one rides for the first time and is still getting acquainted with the attraction’s layout and its controls, but it can start to feel natural on the second ride-through. That’s because we aim by looking, simply focusing on what and where we want to toss a shell. And augmented reality combined with built sets allows the game to come to our world rather than place us in an attraction that moves us among screens. Smartly, the emphasis is on riding alongside Mario and his pals more than it is winning or losing, creating a sense of camaraderie.

“When we’re building games, a lot of people may think it’s something digital,” Miyamoto said. “All you really need is your screen and your fingers, and that encompasses all of what games have to offer. But I feel there’s more to it. It’s when that virtual experience that you’re having in the game is able to make a connection to real-life experiences that you had. That’s what results in people really enjoying the game and being touched and moved by the game.”

He adds, “That kind of sense of adventure or playfulness maybe fades away into the background as people grow older. So having this kind of physical space, we’re hoping, brings that memory back, brings that joy and sense of adventure into people.”

More than that, Super Nintendo World, like the best-designed theme park spaces — think Disneyland’s New Orleans Square or Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, Cars Land in Disney California Adventure, the entirety of Walt Disney World’s Animal Kingdom or Universal’s “Harry Potter”-themed lands — works because I believe it fills us with a sense of wonder, or what Berkeley psychology professor Dacher Keltner described as “awe.” We need it, as a reminder that we can come together in a shared space where design can welcome us, helping us feel a part of a greater whole.

Each time I’ve traversed the green warp pipe to enter Super Nintendo World I’ve wanted to pause. It’s as if an adjustment period is needed, to get acquainted with colors that look computer-generated, and to remember I’m in a place with its own set of rules. There to my left are clocks I can punch, and up ahead is a gray, monstrous castle that feels alive. Being amid such spectacle is a freeing sensation.

Keltner spoke in a recent interview with Berkeley’s alumni publication on the importance of awe: “We know awe reduces stress. Awe helps your immune system. We know awe makes you feel like you have more time. It makes you feel like you’re part of a community. I can walk across the Berkeley campus, be awestruck by the trees and I’m suddenly like, I have a great community, my colleagues are great. If you find a minute or two out of your day, go out to lunch, go watch a cloud for a minute, just see how it changes.”

Inside Super Nintendo World: A guide to every dish at so-cute-it-hurts Toadstool Cafe

At Universal Studios Hollywood, Super Nintendo World is officially opening. Here’s a rundown of every dish at the Super Mario Bros.-themed Toadstool Cafe.

Feb. 15, 2023

Or, in the case of Super Nintendo World, watch a stack of Goombas sway as they walk, or admire the flagpole atop “Mount Beanpole,” a towering mountain filled with blocks we wish we could punch, vicious chomping Piranha Plants, inviting green spaces and zipping platforms that seem ripe for jumping.

“We create games with curiosity in mind,” Miyamoto said, pointing up toward Mount Beanpole and saying he wants guests on the ground floor to wonder how one can reach its peak and interact with all its moving parts (one can’t).

“But that kind of curiosity or interest is something we wanted to re-create here,” he said. “It’s just like in games, to have points of interest and making sure we provide something that’s of interest and is a reward to people’s curiosity.”

Beyond the Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge ride, there are a series of mini-games that dot the space, appearing naturally — embedded into the design of the land rather than staged in a more carnival-focused setup. The idea is we have entered a game world rather than a place to play games.

One has us turning a crank to fell a Goomba, one of those wobbly, mushroom-like creatures. Another has us punching a block to unleash a shell in the hopes of hitting a Koopa, a turtle-inspired adversary.

Some require participating with a larger group or strangers, such as one in which we are trying to turn off vintage-designed toy clocks. There is a final collective battle that involves full body participation, and one will need to purchase a $40 Power-Up Band to gain access.

There is an underlying narrative to the land, as guests are charged with reacquiring a stolen golden mushroom, and the final bout necessitates having completed three prior games with progress tracked via the wristband (but you can probably charm your way in).

My sense is that may fly over the heads of most guests who don’t stop to watch the animated sequence in the entry hall of Princess Peach’s castle. Yet I don’t think the plot is required knowledge to have a good time in Super Nintendo World.

The underlying unspoken thesis of the land, after all, is one that has defined humanity since its very beginning: Play, before story, builds connections.

Super Nintendo World

The first mario theme park in the world.

Super Nintendo World is a thematic zone that opened in 2021 in Osaka’s Universal Studios Park and dedicated to Mario, the famous Italian plumber. As a video game franchise and the first official Nintendo Park in the world, this attraction park is unique in its category. After 3 years of works and a delayed opening, it was inaugurated during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Located in the eastern part of Universal Studios Japan (USJ), the first interactive Nintendo Park in the world , dedicated to the Mario series , has officially opened to the public on March 18, 2021. The opening was delayed several times, and coincided with USJ’s 20th anniversary. However the international context is unfavorable with a lingering Coronavirus   🦠 pandemic and only 5 months before the summer Tokyo Olympic Games   🏅 , postponed to 2021 and to which overseas spectators were not allowed.

visit super mario world

Compared to Harry Potter world, Super Nintendo World covers a larger area, its construction budget was about 25% more than the famous wizard’s and amounted to 50 billion yens (~326.5 million dollars). The construction began in early June 2017 and lasted 3 years.

One month after Super Nintendo World’s opening, the sanitary conditions still require to limit visitors’ number in the park. For this first visit , we knowingly chose a low attendance day: on a weekday and not during Japanese school holidays . A little bit after the gate-opening hours, USJ is still quite empty and waiting times for attractions, even the most popular, do not exceed twenty minutes. Despite the happiness of enjoying the park without the crowd, one cannot help feeling the empty alleys weight on the atmosphere which is not as cheerful as usual.

visit super mario world

We did not need to book a timed ticket, as the day pass (or year pass for us) was enough to enter immediately Super Nintendo World on days when visitors’ numbers were low. Note however that it is almost impossible on the weekends and holidays: due to the quota instated, registration for a time slot will be required. At the time of writing, this reservation, named Area Timed Entry Ticket , can only be made on site and for the same day, either via:

  • A connection to the USJ official smartphone app; or,
  • A specific booth upon arriving in the park.

With the gradual reopening of the borders and the complete reopening of Japan to tourism in October 2022, the Nintendo Park has become very popular and the timed ticket an essential to enjoy it. We strongly recommend to arrive as soon as USJ opens to register as early as possible to the dedicated counter or connect to the official app, so as to get the precious QR Code necessary to enter.

Super Nintendo World (USJ, Osaka), Night view on Mushroom Kingdom, Bowser's Castle and Mount Beanpole

The real-life Mushroom Kingdom

The entrance to the land is one of the famous warp pipes that leads to the heart of the colorful Mushroom Kingdom . The scenery is beautifully done and includes countless details and moving elements, to the wonder of visitors totally immersed in this impressive view . In the background, various soundtracks from Mario 's universe video games play softly and offer a musical environment all along the journey.

The awesome monumental decors, built on 2 levels, include:

  • Princess Peach’s Castle ,
  • Bowser’s Castle (Bowser is named Koopa in Japan), and,
  • Mount Beanpole.

Walking inside the park, you will easily encounter the main protagonists and even take a picture with them:

  • Mario and Luigi ,
  • Captain Toad, and,
  • Princess Peach .

For this overview of Super Nintendo World shortly after its inauguration, we will see two main attractions, an interactive treasure hunt, two merchandise shops, one cafe-restaurant and a couple of snack vendors.

Super Nintendo World (USJ, Osaka), Interactive mini-game with the Power-Up Band

Interactive game with the Power-Up Band

Pass holders don’t need to pay additional fee to access Mario’s world in Universal Studios Japan, but the Power-Up Band bracelet is certainly a must-have to enjoy all the subtleties of this universe.

The Power-Up Band is a kind of magnetic key similar to a smartwatch without screen and working with a smartphone  📱 app . The Band exists in 6 types available to purchase and each of them represent a team: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi...The game can start and the goal is to to score and secure a high ranking by playing interactive mini-games and collecting a maximum of coins and digital stamps throughout the park.

The Power-Up Band is a replacement for game console paddle and allows gamers fan of Nintendo to play their favorite video games in real life. The park’s hyperconnectivity and the immersive digital technology were thoroughly designed to experience:

  • Punching cubes to *virtually* collect coins,
  • Solving riddles, some of which based on sounds,
  • Escaping Piranha Plants, or
  • Defeating a Goomba.

To access Bowser Jr’s Castle  🏯 in the hidden world of Super Nintendo World , 3 keys are necessary and to be collected in a quest. The final fight against Mario’s sworn enemy takes place on screens in an original setting.

The virtual treasure hunt is particularly suited to children and without a doubt enhances the interest of this Mario Park. The Power-Up Band can also be used in the 2 main attractions, then as an Amiibo with the Nintendo Switch at home.

Super Nintendo World (USJ, Osaka), Mario Kart Koopa's Challenge attraction 2

The attractions

Mario kart koopa's challenge.

Despite its attractive name, Mario Kart is not really a racing game as speed is not the core of the action. It is more akin to an augmented reality shooting game . Equipped with a red helmet on which the affixed visor serves as a screen, 4 people ride the kart, 2 at the front and 2 at the back.

Then the race ride begins and players shoot shells on opponents and other targets appearing before their eyes, as they move forward. The digital technology is successfully harnessed with sharp and seamless animations . That is certainly where the true challenge lay for the designers.

Super Nintendo World (USJ, Osaka), Yoshi's Adventures attraction 3

Yoshi's Adventures

Yoshi’s Adventures is the best attraction to ride with children : an omnimover ride constituted of variously colored Yoshis. Decors are dazzlingly cute, ideal to delight the younger ones and please lovers of kawaii sceneries. Moreover, the itinerary of this little train  🚅 -like attraction winds in the park allowing for nice panoramic views from above and sweeping views over all of Nintendo Park.

While on the ride, players can collect a maximum of colored eggs hidden in the decor.

Super Nintendo World (USJ, Osaka), Mario Motors shop

Upcoming attractions

The construction of new attractions is expected, to enhance the theme park  🎡 in the near future. Some have been confirmed, such as attractions related to Mario and Zelda, but their openings are scheduled later.

In October 2021, USJ partnered with the Pokémon Company for an attraction that is yet to be unveiled.

The Donkey Kong Area is to open in 2024 , featuring a roller coaster and restaurants, it will make the park 70 % bigger.

The opening of a museum dedicated to Nintendo's history in Uji (near Kyoto ) by the end of 2023 was announced . The place named “Nintendo Gallery” will use the "Uji Ogura Plant" premises, a plant formerly used by the company between 1969 and 2016.

Moreover, 2 American versions of Super Nintendo World are expected:

  • California's Universal Studios Hollywood, opened since February 17 , 2023 and,
  • Florida’s Universal Orlando Resort for 2025 .

Mario universe in all its variations: gifts and food

The official park would not be complete without a comprehensive offer of Mario merchandise . And the creative design team really racked their brains to provide a large array of items of the Italian plumber’s universe. You can find anything: the unavoidable soft toys, tableware, original figurines, vivid color tee-shirts, hats of all shapes, the famous Groucho-glasses, bath towels, decorated boxes for tissues, and senbei crackers, it is almost impossible not to buy something!

Lastly on the food side, Kinopio's Cafe is a restaurant serving Mario-ized dishes. The menu is both of Italian inspiration , to remind of the plumber’s origins, and American with the classic bacon cheeseburger. Mushrooms are naturally references to Chef Toad, the owner of the restaurant.

We also recommend a stop at the Pit Stop Popcorn , that sells popcorn of course, but in unusual containers, such as a Power Star that lights up and can be used later as a souvenir lamp.

Super Nintendo World (USJ, Osaka), Pit Stop Popcorn in Mushroom Kingdom

Super Nintendo World is mainly targetted to children and huge fans of Mario , and is much more pleasant to visit in group , with friends or family. The beautiful decors of the park faithfully recreate the universe of the famous video games and hopefully they will not age too much before foreign tourists can come back. It is a good place for interactivity and friendly competition , but if you are looking for thrills you’d better visit the other USJ lands.
