The city hosts regular cultural events (including Broadway shows and film screenings) in venues like the Rudder Theatre Complex . There’s never a shortage of fun on the weekends, with trivia nights, community workout classes, and live music at Century Square . Report: former auburn wr ja’varrius johnson will visit texas a&m next month, share this article.

Credit to Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko, as the program is clearly headed in the right direction under his leadership this offseason. Most notably, Elko’s utilization of the spring transfer portal has led to several commitments this month, including former Pitt linebacker Solomon DeShields.

Needing to add another wide receiver after the Maroon & White spring game showed that depth issues persist in the rotation; former Penn State WR KeAndre Lambert-Smith , who was a finalist to land with the Aggies, is now headed to Auburn.

Exciting news is on the horizon: Elko has reportedly arranged a visit next week with former Auburn WR Ja’Varrius Johnson. Johnson recorded 64 receptions, 1,114 receiving yards, and three touchdowns during his Tigers career. Johnson could be a game-changer for the Aggies.

Former Auburn wide receiver Ja’Varrius Johnson is set to visit Texas A&M May 3, his agent @agent__OG tells @247Sports . Johnson, one of the top available receivers in the portal, is a former four-star recruit and posted 10 career touchdowns at Auburn. https://t.co/27NGqQv2yZ pic.twitter.com/Xw443UEIGg — Matt Zenitz (@mzenitz) April 24, 2024

With former Houston wide receiver Sam Brown already visiting College Station on Tuesday, Elko will need to land one of the two remaining options to feel safe going into fall camp. WR Jabre Barber continues to recover from his recent surgery to repair an injury sustained this spring.

Texas A&M student radio station could soon be coming to FM airwaves

Texas A&M's longtime college radio station KANM has finally secured a construction permit for a low-powered FM broadcast frequency, a move decades in the making that will make listening to the station more accessible for Bryan and College Station residents.

The radio station announced the move in a Monday press release. Securing the permit is notable for a small station; there are only so many radio frequencies available in a given location, and it's rare for an unclaimed frequency to become available. Plus, with many broadcast radio stations transitioning to online-only streaming , it's unusual to see an indie radio station take the opposite track.

KANM officials say the approval of the permit is the first step towards operating the station on an over-the-airwaves frequency. According to the  Federal Communications Commission (FCC), to receive a construction permit, an applicant must first show that it can construct and operate a station, and that its facility won't cause objectionable interference to any other station. Once the station is constructed, the applicant must file a second permit to become fully licensed to operate. FCC licenses are good for a set period, after which the licensee must refile, or let the license expire.

Low-powered frequencies are available solely to noncommercial educational broadcasters. As the name implies, low-powered stations must broadcast at 100 watts or less to avoid interfering with other stations in the area. According to the FCC, the broadcast range of a 100-watt station is about 3.5 miles.

KANM was founded at the university in 1973 as a student government-run station that broadcasted via coaxial cable . In 1998, the station became one of the first in the U.S. to begin broadcasting online using streaming audio. The station transitioned to online only broadcasting in the 2010s. KANM is known as a free-format station, meaning that it plays a variety of music as opposed to a single genre. The station also hosts talk shows on topics including cooking, sports, politics and call-in advice. It is also entirely student-run, with the help of some faculty advisers.

Beginning in the 1980s, the station started attempting to transition from cable radio to an FM airwave station. Many people believe it was hamstrung by a lack of institutional support from the university, which already owned KAMU, College Station's NPR affiliate.

However, in 1988, the station got a grant from the university, which it used to upgrade broadcasting equipment in anticipation of securing an FM frequency. In the early 1990s, KANM's then-license coordinator did secure a license with the FCC, but it was used instead to create a new community radio station in Bryan known as KEOS 89.1 FM. It's unclear why the frequency wasn't used for KANM. The station was eventually able to secure a low-powered AM frequency on which they broadcast for several years before going fully online.

With the addition of an FM frequency, fans of KANM will have one more option for listening to the station. KANM officers also stated in the press release that they're working with the university's Department of Communications and Journalism to create educational opportunities for students.

"KANM has been streaming online for the past couple years and has always wanted to grow and bring KANM to what it once was," the release reads in part. "KANM encourages creativity and independence, and prioritizes unique program ideas for the semesterly DJ roster."

No word yet on when the station's FM frequency will be finalized.

Texas A&M Announces 2024-25 Parents Of The Year

A photo of Jacqueline and Kristopher Knoop with their daughters, Sydney and Maddie.

Texas A&M University is excited to announce Jacqueline and Kristopher Knoop as the 2024-25 Parents of the Year.

The Knoops serve the Aggieland community in different but impactful ways. Jacqueline Knoop ‘95 is a professor at Mays Business School in the accounting department, while Kristopher Knoop ‘95 is a family medicine doctor serving the Bryan-College Station community.

The Knoops, nominated by their daughter Sydney ‘24, a senior business honors and accounting major, were surprised with the announcement during one of Jacqueline’s classes. When asked what their reaction was, Jacqueline said, “Pure shock; we remember being in school and seeing the Parents of the Year be announced and would never, in our wildest dreams, have imagined being named with the honor.”

“We’ve always considered our highest honor to be parents to our two daughters, Sydney and Maddie,” Kristopher said, “to know that Sydney felt so strongly about our greater impact that she nominated us brought us to tears.”

In her nomination, Sydney described her parents as “legendary” in their respective fields. “While I always knew I had amazing parents,” she said, “these past four years have shown me all that my parents mean to the student body of Texas A&M,” Sydney added that her parents inspire her daily to live out the core values of Texas A&M.

Sydney wrote that her mother’s commitment extends beyond the classroom. She is the first accounting professor many students will have, but she also has dedicated herself to being the first mentor, career adviser, “mom” away from home and supporter to all her students.

Describing her father, Sydney wrote that Kristopher strives to give back to the Texas A&M medical community. He volunteers with the Texas A&M School of Medicine and has guided and advised students pursuing medicine for many years. Kristopher is also a proud Aggie sports fan who is always ready to bring new fans to experience the Aggie Spirit.

The Knoops also give back to the Texas A&M community outside their professional roles. The Knoops are involved in OPAS, with Jacqueline serving as the President of OPAS Encore, the fundraising arm of OPAS, and Kristopher serving on the board of directors.

“Seeing how my parents give back to this organization is inspiring,” Sydney said, “They are dedicated to bringing the arts to Texas A&M, bettering and investing in the local community.”

Current students had more to say about the Knoops:

“I absolutely adore the Knoop family! They are genuinely so generous and caring to everyone they encounter. As a TA (teaching assistant), I have the privilege of getting to know the Knoops on a personal level, and they create the most welcoming and supportive environment.” — Audrey Knoll, ‘25

“Jacque and Kris have always opened their home to be a safe haven for many college students. Their willingness to be present and support me has had an extraordinary impact on my life. I only hope to foster the same love, compassion and overwhelming grace that they have for each patient/student they encounter.” — Christine Chacko, ‘25

When asked what they are most looking forward to during their year as the Texas A&M Parents of the Year, Kristopher said, “We’ve always considered the Texas A&M community our extended family, and during our year, we are most looking forward to increasing this extended family by meeting as many students and families as possible.”

The Aggie Parent and Family Ambassadors (APFA) extends its gratitude to Melissa Wilkinson, the 2023-2024 Parent of the Year, for her service to the university this past year.

Every year, Texas A&M students can nominate their parents and family members to represent the university as Parent(s) of the Year. Members of APFA, a recognized student organization within Student Life — New Student and Family Programs , select the winners based on their character and embodiment of the Texas A&M Core Values.
