New Rules To Convert Visit Visas Into Work Permits In Bahrain

The Bahrain government announced that it would not allow the conversion of visit visas to work or dependent visas without a sponsor. While visit visas can be changed to work or dependent visas if the sponsor is the same, the fee for them has been increased by over four times.

The fee, which was originally BD60, now stands at BD250 per visa. The announcement came from Shaikh Hisham bin Abdulrahman Al Khalifa, Interior Ministry Undersecretary at Nationality, Passports, and Residence Affairs (NPRA).

The official said the decision was taken by Interior Minister H.E. General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa. As per the decision of the Interior Minister, “it was decided to stop changing visit visas to work or dependent visas without a sponsor.

It was also agreed to increase the fees for changing visit visas to work or dependency visas from BD60 to BD250 only if it will be for the same sponsor,” the announcement said. Further, it said the decision is as per the government directives to intensify the rules of changing visit visas to support the local workforce by making them the first employment choice.

The procedures would be carried out in cooperation with the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) to promote the National Labour Market Plan and stop the exploitation of visit visas.

Calls had been made by various people in the Kingdom recently for tightening the rules regarding the conversion of visit visas to work visas, citing its effect on the employment prospects of Bahrain citizens. Several proposals had been made by the MPs in the Parliament to either completely stop the conversion or increase the fees for the conversion of visit visas to work visas as well as for issuing work visas for foreigners.

How to get Bahrain on Arrival Visa by road/air?

Saudi Iqama holders and their dependents are entitled to get Bahrain on arrival visa by road through King Fahd Causeway as well as at Bahrain International Airport.

Who can get the visa?

A Saudi Iqama holder who meets all the below-mentioned requirements can get a Bahrain on arrival visa for the following;

• All accompanying dependents.
• All accompanying legal domestic workers.

In case of an accompanying family visit visa holder, you need to get a Bahrain e-visa .

In order to get an arrival visa, a dependent needs to go to the border along with the sponsor Iqama holder.

Bahrain Causeway Visa Requirements

Iqama holders.

• Passport with the validity of 6 months. 
• Original Iqama with 3 months validity for Saudi residents.
• The Iqama is issued at least 3 months ago.
• Valid Istimara of the car. (If renting a car, a NOC to cross the border from the company).
• A suitable Iqama profession.
• Exit Reentry Visa valid for your stay in Bahrain.
• A return ticket (in case traveling by Air).

If you are doubtful that your Saudi Iqama profession is not eligible to get a Bahrain on-arrival visa, you can apply for it online for yourself as well as your dependent and family visit visa holders. 

Family Visit Visa Holders

• Valid Multiple Entry Family Visit Visa.
• Paper print of Bahrain e-visa .

Bahrain on Arrival Visa by Road

Entering bahrain.

• First of all, you will pass through Saudi customs.
• Then, the immigration officer will process your exit from KSA.
• Pay Vehicle Toll Tax: BD 2.5 or SR 25.
• Insurance cost: BD 2.3 or SR 23.
• Get your passport stamped with the Bahrain visa.

Bahrain Visa Validity

Bahrain on-arrival visa taken by road is a multiple-entry visa with 180 days validity. 

• Max stay in one trip: 30 days.
• The visa is not extendable.
• Bahrain Visa Fee: Free.

Coming back to Saudi Arabia

On the way back to Saudi Arabia from Bahrain, you will get;

• Exit stamp on the passport by Bahrain Immigration.
• Entry stamps on passports by Saudi immigration.
• Pay Vehicle Toll Tax: BD 2.6 or SR 26.
• Saudi Customs will check your car thoroughly.
• List of Prohibited items to bring to Saudi Arabia .

Upon entry into Saudi Arabia, the multiple-entry family visit visa holder would be able to stay in Saudi Arabia for a further 90 days.

Best time to cross King Fahd Causeway

If the causeway is not crowded, it takes merely 30 minutes to cross it. The best time to cross Bahrain’s causeway varies between working days and holidays.

• Weekdays: between 2 am and 7 am.
• Weekends: between 4 am and 6 am.

Bahrain on Arrival Visa by Air

In order to get a Bahrain on-arrival visa while traveling by air; do the following after arriving at the airport;

• Head towards the bank counter to pay the visit visa fee of BD 25 or SR 250 per head.
• Fill out a separate on-arrival visit visa application form available at the bank counter.
• Go to the eye-scanning counter.
• Go to the immigration counter where you will have to produce all the required documents. 

If you want to save money on a visa, you can apply for a single entry visa online and pay only BD 9 or SR 90 per passport.

If everything goes fine, you will be awarded an arrival visit visa in Manama, Bahrain. Enjoy your Trip!

Visa types and application fee amounts, visa types and conditions with no fee required.

Visa applicants, including children, are required to pay a non-refundable, non-transferable visa application fee, sometimes referred to as the MRV fee, before applying for a nonimmigrant visa. The visa application fee must be paid whether a visa is issued or not. The type of visa for which you apply determines the fee amount. Depending on your citizenship and the type of visa you are applying for, you may also have to pay a visa issuance or “reciprocity ” fee. This webpage lists visa application fees associated with each nonimmigrant visa type.

Please note that only the application fees for nonimmigrant visas are listed here.

Your visa application fee is non-refundable and you cannot transfer it to another person. You will receive a receipt after paying the application fee. All nonimmigrant visa application fee (also known as the MRV fee) payments made on or after October 1, 2022, are valid for 365 days from the date a receipt is issued for payment of the MRV fee. Applicants must schedule an interview appointment or submit an interview waiver application during this 365-day period. Please note applicants must only schedule their interview or submit their waiver application within the 365-day period. There is no requirement the interview must occur during the 365-day period. All receipts for payment of MRV fees issued before October 1, 2022, were extended until September 30, 2023, and remain valid until this date.

• Applicants for A, G, C-2, C-3, NATO, and diplomatic visas (as defined in 22 CFR 41.26);
• Applicants holding J visas and who are participating in certain official U.S. Government-sponsored educational and cultural exchanges;
• Replacement of a machine-readable visa within one year of visa issuance, when the original visa was not properly affixed or the visa needs to be reissued through no fault of the applicant;
• Applicants exempted by international agreement, including members and staff of an observer mission to United Nations Headquarters recognized by the UN General Assembly, and their immediate families;
• Applicants traveling to provide certain charitable services;
• U.S. Government employees traveling on official business; and,
• A parent, sibling, spouse or child of a U.S. Government employee killed in the line of duty who is traveling to attend the employee's funeral and/or burial; or a parent, sibling, spouse, son or daughter of a U.S. Government employee critically injured in the line of duty for visitation during urgent treatment and convalescence.

In some cases, additional visa fees are paid directly to the National Visa Center, to the U.S. Embassy or to the Department of Homeland Security.

Nonimmigrant Visa Issuance ("Reciprocity") Fees

Applicants from certain countries may be required to pay a visa issuance fee after their application is approved. These fees are based on "reciprocity" (what another country charges a U.S. citizen for a similar-type of visa). The United States strives to eliminate visa issuance fees whenever possible, however, when a foreign government imposes these fees on U.S. citizens for certain types of visas, the United States will impose a "reciprocal" fee on citizens of that country for similar types of visas. The Department of State's website has more information about visa issuance fees and can help you determine if an issuance fee applies to your nationality.

The Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) is an Internet-based system that tracks F, M, and J visa participants (and their family members) from the time they receive their initial documentation (either an I-20 or a DS-2019) until they graduate/leave school or conclude/leave program.

F, M and J visa principal applicants: Check with your U.S. school to make sure your information has been entered into SEVIS. You will need to pay a separate SEVIS fee in addition to the visa application fee. For nonimmigrant students with Form I-20, the SEVIS fee is US$350. DHS will maintain the $35 I-901 SEVIS Fee for J exchange visitors in the au pair, camp counselor, and summer work travel program participant categories, but the full I-901 SEVIS Fee for other J exchange visitors is now $220. Proof of payment is required before your student or exchange visitor visa will be issued. Payment cannot be made at the U.S. Embassy. Instructions for paying the SEVIS fee can be found here .

SEVIS Fee Exception

Applicants participating in a U.S. Government sponsored program (programs whose codes begin with G-1, G-2, G-3, G-7) are not required to pay the SEVIS fee.

Blanket L Fee (Fraud Prevention and Detection Fee) First-time principal applicants who are covered under a blanket petition for L status must pay a Fraud Prevention and Detection fee of US $500. This fee should be paid to the cashier at the Consular Section on the day of the interview. If a subsequent L-1 visa application is based on a new Form I-129S, the Fraud Prevention and Detection fee must be collected again.

Major Schengen visa update for Bahrain, Oman, Saudi Arabia and India

Under the new arrangement, nationals of Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Bahrain will be eligible for five-year multiple-entry Schengen visas

Passport holders from Bahrain, Oman and Saudi Arabia, are set to benefit from extended travel privileges as the European Union (EU) announced the issuance of five-year multiple-entry Schengen visas.

The announcement was made by Josep Borrell, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, during the High-Level Forum on Regional Security and Cooperation held in Luxembourg.

He said, “I would like to welcome the adoption by the [European] Commission this morning of decisions that will allow to harmonise the rules on the issuing of multiple-entry visas for GCC countries.”

Borrell expressed the EU’s commitment to strengthening relations with Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries by harmonising visa rules.

Schengen visa changes

Under the new arrangement, nationals of Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Bahrain will be eligible for five-year multiple-entry Schengen visas, allowing them to make multiple visits to Schengen Area countries within a calendar year.

However, travellers must adhere to the 90/180-day rule, limiting stays to a maximum of three months within any six-month period.

While specific details are yet to be officially released by EU authorities, it is anticipated that first-time applicants and eligible passport holders from the mentioned countries will benefit from the extended visa validity as well.

Notably, citizens of the UAE are currently the only GCC nationals who enjoy a visa-free entry to the Schengen Area, while discussions are ongoing between other GCC nations and the EU to further ease visa requirements.

Earlier this year, talks saw EU countries consider the lifting of visa requirements for nationals of Kuwait and Qatar based on several key criteria, as revealed in a recent report:

• Economic benefits
• EU relations with the countries

The European Union Commission’s assessment concluded that both Kuwait and Qatar present a low risk in terms of irregular immigration.

Should the European visa requirements for these GCC countries be lifted, travellers would be eligible for the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS).

Indian nationals benefit from new Schengen visa rule change

In addition to the visa changes for Gulf citizens, the EU has also adopted more favorable Schengen visa rules for Indian nationals.

Eligible Indian travellers with an established travel history and prior Schengen visa usage will now be granted multiple-entry visas with extended validity, starting from two years and potentially extending to five years, subject to passport validity.

Previously, the standard rules of the Visa Code applied.
