Why coach travel is the easy and cost-effective alternative to a road trip

Recently updated on November 27th, 2023 at 03:34 pm

Dreaming of a road trip but not too keen on the rising costs of fuel and the stress of navigating new roads? We’ve got you covered. Coach travel is coming back in a big way and we know why. From convenient drop-off locations and extra comfortable seats, to relaxing while someone else does the driving, here’s why coach travel is the easy and cost-effective way to roam the open roads on your next trip.

You don’t have to fork out for fuel

With skyrocketing fuel prices, the humble road trip has become one of the more expensive holiday options. So can you how satisfy your wanderlust without breaking the bank? Coach travel. Forget hunting down the cheapest fuel prices and stressing about budgets. When you travel by coach, you can kick back and relax, knowing that all those annoying travel costs (fuel, tolls, taxes, parking, insurance, registration, maintenance fees… ) are included in the cost of your tour. You just have to make one single easy payment and it’s all taken care of. There are no hidden extras, plus you share all those extra fees and taxes between you and the other passengers onboard. Now that’s economical.

It’s stress-free – which means fewer arguments

A road trip conjures up romantic images of sing-a-longs, laughter, and wind in the hair. But they can also be very stressful. Navigating your way around somewhere new will inevitably fray the nerves, which leads to arguments about everything from where to go, to missed exits, and even whose turn it is to drive. If you don’t want to deal with traffic jams, unreliable navigators, people cutting you off, or backseat drivers, go for coach travel. All of these stresses are eradicated once you get on the coach… And you can leave it all in the hands of your experienced driver.

Coach travel is safer

Did you know that you’re 66 times more likely to die in a car than in a coach? Those professional drivers are doing more than just alleviating your stress – they’re keeping you safer on the roads. With coach travel, you can have peace of mind knowing your experienced driver knows the roads, is driving a well-maintained vehicle, and by law, is engaging in regular training and health checks to ensure they are safe and fit to drive.

You don’t have to worry about parking

Hands up if you get completely frazzled when you have to park somewhere new? You’re not alone. It’s all fun and games on a road trip until you have to not only find a convenient parking space – but cough up the costs of parking. You usually have to either park miles away from your hotel or restaurant or pay exorbitant prices for a park… Neither of which is appealing when you’re on holiday.

One of the greatest advantages of coach travel is that hassle completely disappears. You’ll get dropped off right at your hotel or destination, so you don’t have to walk too far or pay for parking. Then, your friendly coach driver will pick you back up from a convenient spot at a set time. You basically have a personal chauffeur. Too easy!

It’s comfortable

Coach travel has come a long way over the last few decades. Forget rickety old buses… Today you’ll travel in style with all the modern comforts. Trafalgar has a fleet of custom coaches, complete with air-conditioning, washroom, complimentary WiFi, and plush seats with great legroom. We have lots of storage space under the coach and above the seats, so you can easily store your luggage without any fuss. While our coaches are extra comfortable, we also make regular stops so you can stretch your legs, get a coffee or a snack, and take in the views.

With coach travel, you can enjoy the scenery

Soaking up the scenery is one of the best parts of a road trip… unless you’re the driver. When you’re focusing on the road, you don’t really get to sit back and appreciate the passing views. One of our favourite benefits of coach travel is that you can keep your eyes glued to the window for as long as you want. Plus, you’re usually sat up much higher in a coach, so you’ll get better views than in a car.

Coach travel is an easy way to reduce your carbon footprint

Want to travel with a clean conscious? Coach travel is the greenest way to go. The average coach journey produces far fewer carbon emissions than cars, planes or trains, which means it’s the most environmentally-friendly way to travel. Trafalgar is also investing in low-emission coaches as part of our commitment to the five-year How We Tread Right sustainability strategy .

Stress-free, cost-effective, and eco-friendly? Travel doesn’t get better than that!

What’s the Difference Between a Bus and a Coach?

So you’ve heard the words coach, motorcoach, and charter bus thrown around, but how exactly are they different from a plain bus? There are actually quite a few differences between coaches and buses, including purpose, design, history, and amenities.

History of Buses and Coaches

Buses and coaches have similar origins starting in Europe during the 1600s as horse-drawn vehicles.

A black and white photo from 1890 of a horse drawn carriage in Paris

The term “bus” comes from the word “omnibus,” which originally referred to a horse-drawn carriage that served as a public bus line. One of the earliest iterations of an omnibus was launched in Paris in 1662, but they eventually spread throughout France and soon Great Britain, where the first bus line opened in 1824. Early motor buses were developed in the late 1890s but were not produced and used on a mass scale until 1910.

Modern coaches started with stagecoaches, also sometimes referred to as carriages. Horse-drawn stagecoaches often traveled pre-scheduled routes but could be hired for long-distance travel with a small number of passengers with light luggage. Great Britain was home to the first recorded stagecoach in 1610 that traveled between Edinburgh and Leith. Longer distance routes were developed between cities like London and Liverpool with coaching inns along the way for travelers to rest. Once railways were introduced in the 19th century, horse-drawn coaches became all but obsolete.

The earliest motorized coach was the charabanc, which was introduced in the 1920s and quickly became the preferred vehicle for companies that previously operated horse-drawn coaches.

Different Uses for Buses and Coaches

To keep it simple: All modern coaches are technically buses but not all buses are coaches. Both types of vehicles are used to transport a large number of passengers across different distances.

A bus usually refers to public transport or pre-scheduled transportation like transit (city) buses and school buses. Buses are usually built for efficiency and not necessarily comfort. They serve the public and travel along predetermined routes, making several stops along the way. The main purpose of a transit bus is to offer cost-effective transportation for as many passengers as possible within metro areas. Bus services can often be split into different categories like standard buses, which service normal routes and express buses, which often service fewer stops for faster rides.

A coach may also be called a motorcoach, coach bus, or charter bus. Smaller models may be considered minicoaches or minibuses. Unlike normal buses, coaches are primarily used for private transportation and are often used for long-distance travel where convenience and comfort are key. Coaches are usually private modes of transportation and travel on routes determined by the riders or trip organizers. Some intercity coach services like Greyhound travel along fixed routes and are open to the public via a ticketing system. Although the schedules of coach buses vary, most coaches don’t make more stops than necessary since many are traveling long distances.

Designs of Buses and Coaches

Vehicles like standard city buses are oftentimes a similar length and overall body style to coaches. However, buses that service public sectors can also come in modified designs like the articulated bus. These extended vehicles shave multiple cabins and optimize the number of passengers that can be transported along any given route. Transit buses also include standing areas and railings that can be used when seats fill with passengers. Most transit buses can accommodate anywhere from 40 to 60 passengers, depending on the model.

Other notable design choices may include :

  • Multiple entry doors
  • Straphangers for standing passengers
  • Dedicated seats at the front of the bus for passengers with mobility concerns
  • Ramps for passengers with mobility aids on ADA-accessible buses

Coaches have a raised floor that creates space underneath the bus for luggage storage, making it taller than your average transit bus. This gives the interior of coach buses a platform-like appearance compared to normal buses, and passengers have a raised view of the street. Coach buses usually have anywhere between 18 and  56 seats. Buses on the lower end of that range usually qualify as minibuses or minicoaches.

Here are a few coach design differences from transit buses :

  • One entry door at the front of the vehicle
  • Storage compartments beneath the bus for at least one piece of luggage per passenger
  • Uniform rows of seating throughout the bus
  • Ramp at entry or wheelchair lift in the rear of the vehicle on ADA-accessible coaches

Amenities of Buses and Coaches

Bus amenities.

Transit buses aren’t known for being the most comfortable rides and don’t always include amenities to improve rider satisfaction. Of course, there are newer models of buses that may have updated features for riders, but this will vary depending on the transit service and city.

Some transit bus amenities may include :

  • Free public wifi
  • Covered bus stops and bus shelters

Coach Amenities

Since coach buses are primarily built for comfort across long distances, they often include additional amenities not found on transit buses.

Amenities on coach buses may include :

  • Plush reclining seats made of cloth, leather, faux leather, or a combination of materials
  • USB and electric outlets
  • Dropdown TVs
  • Overhead storage compartments
  • Reading lights and personal climate controls

Coach Holidays: 12 Travel and Packing Tips

1. pack your belongings in a medium-size suitcase.

When you are taking a coach tour, you are making pit stops all over the place. Throughout your journey, you will be checking into various hotels and hauling a large suitcase back and forth from the hotel to the bus and the bus to a hotel will drain your energy.

Instead, pack light, carry a backpack, and if need be, pack your clothes in a hand-carry or a medium-size suitcase. You can keep all your important documents such as your passport and tickets in your backpack.

2. Wear Comfortable Clothes

Do not dress to impress, but dress for comfort. You can expect to be sitting in the coach for several hours. Therefore, you need to be as comfortable as possible. You can wear sweatpants and a loose shirt.

However, the weather of the country you are taking a tour of will also influence your dress code. In most cases, coaches maintain a cool temperature, as it’s better to be cold than hot. If cold temperature causes you discomfort, carry a jacket or a sweatshirt with you.

3. Do Not Miss a Chance to do Laundry

If you are taking a tour lasting ten days or less, you do not need to do laundry. If your tour is longer than ten days and you are staying in a hotel for at least two days, you can use the hotel’s laundry service. If you are staying in the hotel for one day, you can wash the laundry in your room’s bathroom.

4. Have a Bottle of Water and Snacks

Since you will be travelling a great deal, you need to keep yourself hydrated. Don’t worry, most coaches offer bathroom facilities. You should also carry some snacks with you. You can munch on them as you look out the beautiful scenery outside your window.

5. Bring a Blanket

In case you feel sleepy and require some shut-eye until the next rest stop or destination, you need to create a comfortable environment. You can carry a blanket (like the one they offer in airplanes) with you. If you want, you can bring a neck pillow as well. If you want to block all the noise and light out, you can bring an eye mask and earplugs.

6. Use Your Smart Phone to Keep Yourself Entertained

For people who are travelling alone, a smart phone could come in handy for those long, boring, and silent rides on the coach. You can download games, travel guides, and GPS navigation to keep track of where you are going next and on how long it will take you to reach your next destination.

However, you also need to courteous to other passengers on the coach. Keep your phone on silent or vibrate. When you are listening to music, keep the volume low, as in a coach, the volume can emit through your earphones.

7. Carry Loose Change

You should carry loose change with you. When you stop at rest stops for instance, you may want to purchase something from the store. In some countries, some rest stops charges people to use their toilet facilities.

8. Take a Dictionary with You

If you are travelling to a country where the native tongue is not English, you should keep a dictionary with you so you can communicate with the locals. You should learn common phrases in their language such as “thank you, “welcome,” “how are you?” and more.

9. Bring an Umbrella

If the destination you are going to is prone to rainfall, you need to take an umbrella with you. It is better to be prepared than be sorry. If you are going with your partner, you should still take your own umbrella. By sharing an umbrella, you are not going to be half-dry and half wet. If you want, you can take a raincoat with you, but an umbrella will still be a more convenient choice.

10. Bring Two Pairs of Shoes

You need to wear comfortable shoes on your journey. You do not want to sleep in your sneakers or walk around the coach in them. When you get on the coach, you can slip into slippers or another pair of comfortable shoes. You can also just wear socks if you do not want to carry extra shoes.

11. Bring Reading Material with You

People who prefer to read on long journey instead of listening to music or playing games on their smart phone should bring a book or download books on their handheld device. They can bring more than one book, depending on how long their journey and their reading speed. Do not forget your charger, as most coaches offer power points for passengers to charger their electronic devices.

12. Bring Toothpaste, Toothbrush, and Deodorant

When you wake up from your sleep, you will need to refresh yourself. Bring face wash or wet wipes, toothpaste, toothbrush, and deodorant with you. When you wake up after a few hours, you can use the coach’s bathroom facility or wait for the coach to stop at a rest stop. If you will be staying at a hotel for a day, you can wait until you reach your room. Before you can start packing, you need to book a coach holiday, but at the right time, as different holidays affect the rates.

When is the Best Time to Book a Coach Holiday?

Only if possible, you should book a coach holiday in off-season. The prices tend to increase during the holiday season. You want to avoid booking a coach holiday during summer holidays, New Year, Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Easter.

  • A Coach Trip

This listening exercise is about a tour guide talking about a coach trip to a group of tourists. This a multiple-choice listening exercise for Part 4 of the B1 Preliminary Listening Test.  This gives you practice before you take the Cambridge English B1 Preliminary exam.

B1 Preliminary Listening Test Part 4 – A Coach Trip

You will hear a tour guide talking to a group of tourists about a coach trip.

1. What is the change of plan?

2. Where will they stop for coffee?

3. The town of Brampton became well known because of its

4. What animals will they see in the wildlife park?

5. What time will they arrive back at the hotel?

6. The tour guide asks if anyone

Tour guide: Good morning everyone. I’m your tour guide for today. We’ve made a change to the trip we usually make on Thursdays. I hope none of you will mind. We’re still going to visit the beautiful town of Brampton with its old university, and there’lI be time to look round that as usual. But today, because we have a lot of children here this week, we’re also going to a wildlife park which a colleague of mine has recommended.

On the way to Brampton, we’ll drive through some beautiful countryside. We’ll go over the mountain and we’ll have a lovely view of the lake from the top. We’ll stop there for a few minutes so you can take some photos. In the next valley, we’ll have a break for coffee. There’s a cafe near a beautiful waterfall and if any of you want to go for a walk, you can.

We’ll get to Brampton at about 11.30. It’s a lovely town. We’ll start by taking a guided tour of the university, which was built in the seventeenth century. Then there’lI be time for all of you to have a look at the shops. Most people come to Brampton nowadays for the shops, but it’s the university that made the town famous. If you don’t want to look at the shops, I suggest you visit the museum.

After lunch, we’ll get back on the coach and go to the wildlife park. We need to stay in the coach while we drive round because we’ll see lions in the park, which can obviously be dangerous. Tell your children not to expect it to be like the zoo – the animals are sometimes hiding in the trees. I know some friends of mine have seen some tigers, but I’ve never seen them and I’m afraid they no longer have any monkeys, but you may see some giraffes.

We’ll leave the wildlife park at half past five. The journey back takes about an hour and a quarter, so we’ll return to the hotel at a quarter to seven. There’lI just be time for you to change before dinner at a quarter past seven.

Now then, before we get on the bus, if anyone wants to ask any questions I’ll try to answer them. I’m going to give each of you an information sheet about the places we’re going to visit. Some of you were on yesterday’s trip with me and I know you found the information sheet helpful. So, if we just move over here ….

What Venice’s New Tourist Tax Means for Your Next Trip

Hamptons Streamliner

“The Hamptons is a market that can use a middle ground,” Blade’s chief marketing officer Roisin Branch said in a statement. “Until electric vertical aircraft are available, we can’t make helicopters less expensive, but we can elevate the ground experience that hasn’t changed in over two decades.”

Each seat is fitted with a call button that will get the attention of an attendant should you want a hot towel, cashmere blanket, or free snack. Passengers will be offered tasty treats to enjoy on the journey, such as Château La Coste rosé, Patron’s new El Alto tequila , PopUp Bagels, and Sweetgreen salads. You’ll also receive Hamptons Survival Dopp kits by Dria and dog accessories by Bonefly if you decide to bring Fido.

That level of service comes at a cost, of course. The Streamliner starts at $195 per seat, whereas the Jitney and Ambassador begin at $41 and $64, respectively. You can also fork out $275 for one of the Streamliner’s seven premium single seats, which is still cheaper than paying $1,000 to get the Blade Bell 407 helicopter to the East End.

The new service will run from Memorial Day weekend until Labor Day. That’s your summer commuting sorted, then.

Nibble on kitty crumpets, chili jam waffles, coronation chicken fingers, and scones bordered by wedges of lemon drizzle and coffee cake.

Caitlin Clark 'keeps the momentum rolling' on first day of Indiana Fever training camp

what is a coach trip in english

INDIANAPOLIS — Caitlin Clark likes to push the pace.

That was evident during Clark's college career at Iowa , when she frequently grabbed a rebound and turned to run back up the court, quickly pulling up for a transition 3-pointer. She's someone that likes to play quick.

And that is working out in her favor, especially as she transitions from the 30-second college shot clock to the 24-second WNBA clock. There are also only eight seconds to get the ball over halfcourt, instead of 10.

"It's fast, a fast shot clock, but I think all of you know that's how I like to play," Clark said. "So, I think it suits my game pretty well. And, you know, it's a fast pace, a lot faster than college. You gotta learn quicker, you gotta get your mind fully wherever, you know, there's no time to be tired."

More: Four questions to open Indiana Fever training camp: How will Caitlin Clark jell?

The Fever cut that number down even more on the first day of training camp on Sunday, playing five-on-five with a 15-second shot clock. Clark was running with the first team during practice, joining center Aliyah Boston, forwards NaLyssa Smith and Katie Lou Samuelson, and guard Erica Wheeler. Kelsey Mitchell, who has started for the Fever for multiple years, is currently out with an ankle injury to start camp.

Clark easily kept up with the first team during that drill, which also featured rim passes to Smith — something head coach Christie Sides was emphasizing during their film session. But Clark never got out of basketball shape. After all, she played in the national championship game just three weeks ago.

"I feel like I'm in really good basketball shape," Clark said. "There's no getting back in shape for myself, I've been playing basketball. There's been no really off period. And for me, I feel like that's a really good thing. It just keeps the momentum rolling."

Even as the pace quickens for Clark, her fundamentals never wavered. She sank 3-pointers and made elaborate passes throughout the first official day of practice, looking like the same player she was in college. Clark averaged 8.9 assists per game in her senior year at Iowa, and her passing ability will be crucial for a Fever team that had just 18 assists per game — 11th in the league — in 2023.

Her new teammates will just have to get used to those passes coming their way.

"Her passing ability, I mean, you saw some of the passes," coach Christie Sides said. "Like, I'm more mad at how many missed layups that we had. It was off a couple of her passes that I think we're just not used to having, you know, someone who can make some of those passes. So, for me, it's her passing. I'm just enamored at times."

Now, the only thing Clark will really have to work on is her defense, something she said Sides has already been on her about.

"Can't let people drive middle," Clark said with a laugh. "I need to work on that for sure."

Indiana ranked 10th in general defense last year, and Sides said of the 26 close games the Fever were in last year, they could never get stops late – they had a defensive rating of 119 in those moments.

"I hate to even admit that we were focused on defense because we fell (10th) last year, right," Sides said. "That didn't sit well with me. We're going to be better defensively. We have to be better."

High school sports | 5 hurt when santa clara county deputy’s cruiser slams into suv during chase, high school sports, subscriber only, high school sports | south bay meets southern hospitality: what the los gatos baseball team learned from trip to rural tennessee, wildcats take trip to lebanon, tenn., where coach mike minkel played college baseball at cumberland.

Like many baseball teams in the Bay Area, Los Gatos spent a week away from home playing non-league teams.

But instead of taking on other opponents from the West Coast, the Wildcats traveled down to middle Tennessee, playing unfamiliar programs like Friendship Christian and Overton in a small town called Lebanon.

Located around 45 minutes east of the state capitol in Nashville and a world away from what the South Bay natives were used to, the teenagers grew to appreciate the state where coach Mike Minkel spent his college years.

“They saw a lot of respect for strangers and people you’ve never met before,” said Minkel, who went to Cumberland University in Lebanon. “A lot of time spent holding doors for people and going out of your way to be kind when you don’t have to be.”

Despite Minkel and his assistant coach, Eric Mull, graduating from the NAIA program more than a decade ago, they still have plenty of friends in the area, making it possible to plan games in Tennessee and put together sightseeing excursion with help from locals.

Through fundraising efforts since last summer, the team was able to make a long trip.

Los Gatos won all three games in the Volunteer state, including a 10-5 victory in Nashville over Mookie Betts’ alma mater Overton High.

They might have been 2,000 miles from temperate Los Gatos, but Brayden Smith and Lucas Carlisle led an offense that looked comfortable in the southeastern humidity. Each junior hit a home run against the Nashville powerhouse, which is 9-1 in league play.

The 18-3 Wildcats stayed focused between the lines, but their coaches made sure they also had fun on their trip.

With several of his players both avid country music and college baseball fans, they also enjoyed a day in the genre’s mecca and caught a Vanderbilt game too.

The Wildcats even got to see the South’s party bus and hot chicken epicenter of Broadway Street, albeit from a distance.

“They got to see what Broadway looked like at night,” Minkel said, who then laughed and added, “Although obviously, we all stayed in the car and drove them around, because there’s not much you can do walking around there at 16.”

But it wasn’t the baseball or the big events that the coach enjoyed the most – It was a quiet team BBQ on the Cumberland river.

“They’re out doing their thing, they’re engaged in nature and off of their phones,” Minkel remembered. “It was refreshing to see and be a part of it. It was an instance where I didn’t really want to leave there and do the next thing.”

He hoped that his team took a new appreciation for that region of the country, and the people who live there, back with them to the South Bay.

“You take all the politics out of everything, and when you come together and sit down, with us from California and them from Tennessee, we’re all just human beings who care about each other,” Minkel said.

UNC basketball transfer target Clifford Omoruyi

© Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

UNC Basketball: Elite Center Now Planning Trip to Chapel Hill

UNC basketball may be one step closer to finally fulfilling its goal of landing a transfer big man.

  • Author: Cam Robertson, All Tar Heels

In this story:

It’s no secret that head coach Hubert Davis and the UNC basketball program have set out to reel in a top transfer to play in the post next season. After being linked to names such as Oumar Ballo, Aaron Bradshaw, Danny Wolf, and Jonas Aidoo, it was clear Davis and the Tar Heel crew had an offseason goal.

RELATED: Tar Heel Coaches Make Bold Move on Transfer Trail

But while the Tar Heels have struck out on many of those transfer targets, they may be gaining the inside track on landing one of the best remaining big men in the transfer portal.

On Friday, 247Sports reported that the Tar Heels had secured a visit with Rutgers transfer big Clifford Omoruyi, with the visit tentatively scheduled for the beginning of May.

UNC has been linked to Omoruyi in recent weeks and appeared in his top 12. However, it had appeared that the Tar Heels may have fallen behind in the race after the top-shelf transfer scheduled visits with Alabama and Kansas State.

That doesn’t appear to be the case anymore, with Omoruyi now set to add UNC to that list.

The 6-foot-11, 240-pound senior played four seasons at Rutgers, starting 101 of the 124 games he played with the Scarlet Knights. Across 32 games as a senior, Omoruyi averaged 10.4 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 2.9 blocks while earning a spot on the Big Ten All-Defensive Team for the second year in a row.

He currently ranks No. 8 overall among the nation's transfer, according to the 247Sports portal rankings, and would fill a massive hole left in Chapel Hill by the departure of five-year starting center Armando Bacot.

With the school’s all-time leading rebounder having exhausted eligibility, Hubert Davis and the UNC basketball staff have been searching for a physical force inside to pair with Jalen Washington down low.

Clifford Omoruyi’s ability to rebound and block shots at a high level would be a perfect fit in Chapel Hill to complement one of the best returning rosters in the country.

Who Is Kyle Chandler's Wife? All About Kathryn Chandler

Actor Kyle Chandler and his wife Kathryn have been married since 1995

Contributor, PEOPLE

David M. Benett/Dave Benett/Getty Images for Channel 4 Television

Actor Kyle Chandler’s wife, Kathryn, is more than his partner — she’s his best friend.

The Friday Night Lights star and his wife of nearly 30 years prefer to keep their relationship low-key.

While Kyle may be best known for his onscreen relationship with Connie Britton as Coach Eric and Tami Taylor on FNL, his real-life marriage is also a success story.

Kathryn has long been a grounding force for the actor, helping him navigate fame while remaining true to himself.

"She knows who I really am and still appreciates me," Kyle told Men’s Health of their close relationship in 2010. "Here I have a new show, the critics are going crazy, and for a minute you think, ‘How can I reinvent myself?’ But success is attached to being who you are. My wife knows I'm a complete idiot, and she reminds me every day that success is meaningless if I'm pretending to be someone I'm not."

For the actor, his marriage is sacred, and so is the firm foundation of trust he and Kathryn have built.

“We trust each other — absolutely, 100 percent. We run into some pretty tough arguments sometimes, but the idea is that at the end of the day, my wife and I realize that we'll always be holding each other's hand,” Kyle explained to Good Housekeeping in 2008. “This is a lifelong relationship, and after 12 years she hasn't gotten rid of me yet.”

Here’s everything to know about Kyle Chandler’s wife, Kathryn Chandler.

They met at a dog park

Kyle and Kathryn met at a California dog park in the mid-1990s.

“There’s a place in Los Angeles called Dog Park,” Kathryn told the Chicago Sun-Times in 1999. “I would take my little Jack Russell terrier there, and sometimes I’d run into Kyle and his dog. So we would kind of smile at each other and do the triple take, but we wouldn’t really do anything about it.”

Kathryn decided to take things into her own hands and told her dog — who she revealed typically didn't listen to her instructions — to jump on Kyle, which the pooch then did, leading to a conversation between the two pet owners.

The couple was on-again, off-again for a time, but after a trip to Pico de Orizaba in Mexico and subsequent altitude sickness on Kyle's part, he realized his relationship was strong enough to go the distance.

"Kathryn continued on, and I stayed back and had this dream of intense love," the actor told Men’s Health of the moment he knew it was time to propose.

"I know it sounds corny, but when we got back home, I bought a bottle of wine and some candles, went to her place, and told her I couldn't live without her."

Kyle and Kathryn married in 1995.

The Chandlers are proud parents to two daughters, Sydney, born in February 1996, and Sawyer born in November 2001.

Sydney is following in her dad’s footsteps and working as an actress. She has appeared in various movies and TV shows, including as Violet in 2022's Don’t Worry Darling and as rocker Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders in the television miniseries, Pistol.

Although Sawyer hasn't made it to the big screen yet, she has worked with her dad. In 2013, she and Kyle lobbied against shark finning , according to the Austin American-Statesman .

In 2021, Kyle's older daughter gave his youngest a birthday shoutout on Instagram .

"Sawyer Quinn Chandler. Wish I were home to scream HAPPY BIRTHDAY into your face ... I love you so much it’s ridiculous," she began her caption, which was posted alongside a black and white photograph of Sawyer. "You — terrify me in the best of ways. Your intelligence. Your creativity. Your compassion. Your heart. You are on FIRE, sis. Never doubt yourself. I have always and will always look up to you. You have saved me in so many ways over the years. Thank YOU for being here. For inspiring all of us with your innate passion for life and adventure. Celebrate today and every day. Slap the bag & hit the pipe. I loveth you," Sydney concluded the sweet birthday tribute.

The family lives in Texas

After years in Los Angeles, Kathryn, Kyle and their daughters moved to a 33-acre ranch outside of Austin, Texas, according to Men's Journal , where animals, and in particular dogs, are a big part of their lives.

"Every time I come home, we have another dog," Kyle told the outlet in 2017. "It's cool. You build a fire on the property and just sit out there, and the dogs stay with you. It's a good feeling."

Prior to the move, the family resided in Topanga Canyon, where Kyle said they lived a very quiet life.

"I like to live simply," the Godzilla star explained to Men's Health in 2010. "My wife is my best friend. We don't go to parties. I believe kids are supposed to get dirty and have fun. When we have people over the house, I'll fire up the grill outside and we'll have good food, but it's potluck. I love what I do, but I don't need the lavish lifestyle that's supposed to go with it."

Kathryn started a nonprofit, Patriots’ Hall, in Dripping Springs, Texas of which she is a founding board member. Kyle also serves on Patriots' Hall's advisory board. According to the organization's website , it’s a place for veterans “of all ages and military service to explore therapeutic workshops, art classes, weekend campouts, education and employment seminars, family gatherings," and more.

As Kathryn explained on The Kelly Clarkson Show , “There’s so many veterans and families in Texas — the densest is actually right where we’re in the center of."

She added that Patriot's Hall was created as a place, "Just for them to get off the computers, get together, cook, get therapy... That was my brainchild, and then community has just stepped up."

"It’s changed our entire community," Kathryn added.

Travel has become an important part of the Chandlers’ marriage after raising their children. “We’ve been married for 27 years. Now it’s that time where the kids have stepped out of the house and we have more time together,” Kyle explained of their empty-nester lifestyle during a 2022 appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show .

Instead of a relaxing beach vacation, he revealed that couple opted for a backpacking trip across the Camino de Santiago in Spain — a 500-mile walk, complete with sleeping in bunk beds in hostels. Kyle told Clarkson that they didn’t make it the whole way, but they had “the time of our lives” regardless.
