Vampire Weekend announces North American tour, shares new music ahead of upcoming album

when will vampire weekend tour

It's a new day for Vampire Weekend .

The beloved indie rock band is back with new music, a 39-date North American tour and a new album, "Only God Was Above Us," set for release April 5 after a half-decade away.

The new album, announced last week, is the follow-up to the band's 2019 album "Father of the Bride." Their last album topped the Billboard Hot 100 and garnered 2020 Grammy nominations for album of the year and a win for best alternative rock album, while the record's lead single "Harmony Hall" scored a nod for best rock song.

The three-person band features lead singer Ezra Koenig, bassist Chris Baio and drummer Chris Tomson. Vampire Weekend released a pair of new singles, “Capricorn” and “Gen-X Cops,” to support the new album.

This Vampire Weekend tour has an interesting twist. The two-time Grammy winners will headline Saturday night shows at the Greek Theater in Berkeley, California, KettleHouse Amphitheater in Bonner, Montana and New York’s famed Madison Square Garden. Then, they'll wake up and do it again the next day on Sunday morning.

"Only God Was Above Us" is out April 5 on a series of formats including on streaming services, physical CDs, standard black vinyl records and limited-edition clear vinyl records on the band’s website .

The fifth LP from the band is set to contain 10 tracks, and you can pre-order/pre-save it here .

Last week, Vampire Weekend confirmed that the album had been recorded all over the world, from Manhattan to Los Angeles to London and Tokyo. It’s said to have been “inspired and haunted by 20th Century New York City”, primarily produced by frontman Ezra Koenig and longtime collaborator Ariel Rechtshaid ( Haim ,  Brandon Flowers ), and written majorly between 2019 and 2020.

Vampire Weekend Releases First New Music In Five Years and Announces Massive Tour Across North America

Facebook icon

“Capricorn” and “Gen-X Cops” Available Now

Watch both videos here and here, only god was above us out april 5, tour dates include saturday night + sunday morning shows in berkeley, ca, bonner,  mt and at  new york’s madison square garden.

Having ended a half decade of anticipation with last week’s album announcement, Ezra Koenig, Chris Baio and Chris Tomson p/k/a Vampire Weekend now fill that void with “Capricorn” and “Gen-X Cops,” a double portion of first tastes of the anxiously awaited Only God Was Above Us , available April 5 via Columbia Records. Pre-order is available now here . Simultaneously, the band has confirmed a full scale North American headline tour. Produced by Live Nation, the 39-date trek follows a select few previously announced festival headlines, a sold out show in the shadow of the solar eclipse, and will include three unique two-show engagements that will see Vampire Weekend play Saturday night shows followed by Sunday morning sets at the Greek Theater in Berkeley CA, KettleHouse Amphitheater in Bonner MT and New York’s Madison Square Garden.

The newly released pair of advance tracks showcase distinctly different aspects of Only God Was Above Us, while feeling very much parts of the same whole. “Capricorn,” written by Ezra Koenig and produced by Ariel Rechtstaid and Koenig, begins on a deceptively subdued note, its honeyed melodies and arpeggiated keys launching into a transcendent chorus featuring a maelstrom of distorted guitars and vibrant drum fills. “Gen-X Cops,” co-written by Koenig and Chris Tomson, and produced by Rechtstaid, Koenig and Tomson, kicks off with a frantic guitar figure befitting a title lifted from a 1990s Hong Kong action movie, and rides a jaunty beat to an anthemic refrain of “Each generation makes its own apology.”

Each of the new tunes is accompanied by a new video built around footage of New York circa 1988 by Only God Was Above Us album art photographer Steven Siegel. Directed by longtime Vampire Weekend creative director Nick Harwood, “Capricorn” is a visual journey to late ‘80s New York City that showcases the alluring yet grimy era of the city— before breaking to modern day Vampire Weekend. “Gen-X Cops,” directed by Drew Pearce (The Fall Guy, Hotel Artemis, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, Iron Man 3), takes a decidedly different route to authenticity, utilizing the exact film-stocks Siegel used in 1988, and tracking down the only authentic 1970s New York subway car on the west coast. Pearce and DP Doug Emmett then meticulously researched the actual light patterns of 1980s subway tunnels in order to build a rig that would emulate them as well as shooting “Gen-X Cops” on 8mm and 16mm cameras to ensure maximum precision.

Only God Was Above Us will be available April 5 via Columbia Records and  will be available digitally, and physically on CD, standard black vinyl, limited edition clear vinyl on the band’s webstore, and with an alternate album cover available exclusively at Independent retailers. Pre-order here: https://vampireweekend.lnk.to/OGWAU/vinyl1

Support acts for Vampire Weekend’s upcoming tour have been hand-picked and carefully curated by Koenig, Baio and Tomson. Every region of the country will be treated to their own very special guests — several of whom hold local significance —all of whom are beloved by the band. Those guests include: LA LOM, The English Beat, Voodoo Glow Skulls, Mike Gordon, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, Ra Ra Riot, Princess featuring Maya Rudolph and Gretchen Lieberum, Cults, a DJ Set By Mark Ronson, Turnstiles and The Brothers Macklovitch. Please refer to the tour poster for more information on which acts will appear on which dates.

Citi is the official card of the Vampire Weekend Tour. Citi cardmembers will have access to presale tickets beginning Tuesday, February 20 at 10 AM local time until Thursday, February 22 at 10 PM local time through the Citi Entertainment program. For complete presale details visit www.citientertainment.com .

Fans are encouraged to sign up now for early access to the band’s presales at vampireweekend.com . Those presales start Wednesday February 21 at 10 AM local time. The general on sale will begin Friday, February 23 at 10 AM local time at vampireweekend.com .

Vampire Weekend Announce Tour, Share Videos for New Songs: Watch

By Matthew Strauss

Vampire Weekend in “GenX Cops”

As promised , Vampire Weekend have released the first two singles from their new album, Only God Was Above Us . The new songs, “ Capricorn ” and “ Gen-X Cops ,” arrive with collage-like music videos that utilize film and footage from Steven Siegel —the photographer whose Subway Dream 11 doubles as the new Vampire Weekend album cover. Watch the videos below.

Vampire Weekend have also announced the Only God Was Above Us Tour. The trek begins in April with the band’s (sold-out) total solar eclipse concert in Austin, Texas. Support on the tour comes from LA LOM (aka the Los Angeles League of Musicians), the English Beat, Voodoo Glow Skulls, Mike Gordon, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, Princess (featuring Maya Rudolph and Gretchen Lieberum), Cults, Mark Ronson (doing a DJ set), the Brothers Macklovitch, and a Billy Joel tribute band called Turnstiles . See Vampire Weekend’s tour dates below.

Only God Was Above Us arrives April 5. Koenig wrote “Capricorn” and he co-wrote “Gen-X Cops” with drummer Chris Tomson. The frontman produced the former track with Ariel Rechtshaid , and he co-produced the latter with Rechtshaid and Tomson.

Coachella 2024: Here's the complete setlist from Vampire Weekend's Saturday Weekend 1 set

I ndie rock band Vampire Weekend was added to the lineup for the Coachella Valley Music and Arts festival Tuesday (à la recent Goldenvoice last-minute Coachella lineup additions such as Blink-182 last year and Arcade Fire in 2022).

The group's 45-minute afternoon set at Coachella on Saturday was a fun ride featuring everything from new songs to a surprise appearance by Paris Hilton playing cornhole.

This was the setlist:

  • "Classical"
  • "Unbelievers"
  • "This Life"
  • "Gen-X Cops"
  • "Diane Young"
  • Cocaine Cowboys mashup: Medley of "Married in a Gold Rush" (Vampire Weekend)/"All the Gold In California" (Gatlin Brothers Band)/"Sin City" (Flying Burrito Brothers)/"Cumberland Blues" (Grateful Dead) / "Possum" (Phish)

Review: Coachella 2024: Vampire Weekend set includes new songs, classic hits and ... Paris Hilton?

Editor's note: The promo image for this story was taken during the band's last time performing at the festival in 2013. Fresh photos will be added to this story when they're ready.

Vampire Weekend turns Austin fans into creatures of the night at total solar eclipse concert

Vampire Weekend performs at the Moody Amphitheater at Waterloo Park in Austin, Monday, April 8, 2024, for a total solar eclipse show. Thousands attended and were equipped with solar eclipse glasses and watched as the eclipse reached totality, while the band paused their performance.

Despite the name, it’s always been easier to picture the members of Vampire Weekend guzzling clam chowder than blood. On Monday, though, our favorite Ivy League rock stars finally found meaningful communion with their undead namesakes. They came to Austin, put an army of the living under their thrall and cheered as the sun went black.

Out-of-towners and townies alike staked spots around the city to watch the total solar eclipse that afternoon. Some marked the moment with their favorite alt-rock stars at Moody Amphitheater in Waterloo Park.

When first announced, the concert felt a bit random. The band is more associated with preppy northeastern idiosyncrasy than the sound of Texas skies. Nevermind all that. Vampire Weekend took a once-in-a-lifetime moment on the shores of Waller Creek and made mystic music, happy to be the opening act at their own show.

Solar eclipse 2024: Austinites cheer on the sun during the 'very, very, super duper cool' total solar eclipse

Consider the components of the vamps’ spell. The symbols of the lunar phases adorned the stage backdrop. It was frontman Ezra Koenig’s birthday. On one of their drums, the moon smiled; on the other, a wary sun shot a sideways glance.

A little after noon, a de rigueur Bonnie Tyler needle drop heralded the band members. All dressed in black or white, except Koenig, who met the stifling humidity and vexingly cloudy skies with a Blind Melon T-shirt. ( “No Rain,” get it?)

The live debut of two tracks from new album “Only God Was Above Us” kicked things off. “Ice Cream Piano” rollicked with classic Vampy Weeks rhythm. Fans wearing galaxy-pattern shirts bopped to “Classical.” Koenig sang of bleak sunrises, and his impish crooning hadn’t weakened a bit over the years. If anything, his voice rode the bubbling percussion and sultry keys with warmer blood than the early days.

The crowd-pleasers really brought the birthday boy to life. His adorable shoulder shakes on “Unbelievers” punctuated more celestial lyrics: “See the sun go down/ It's going on down and the night is deep/ Want a little light/ But who's gonna save a little light for me?” Listen, if there’s an eclipse, you’re gonna hear what you need to hear.

Koenig’s falsetto shot straight to the sky on “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa.” People’s eyes, cowering behind commemorative Vampire Weekend eclipse glasses, traced the arc of his voice right up to the clouds. Practice glances, the first of many.

Wind started to cut the muck in the air. Koenig gesticulated with purpose while performing, with two fingers held up like a Boy Scout. Or, as it was easy to think while he sang “White Sky” with a glowing ring at his back, like Benedict Cumberbatch opening a dimensional portal in “Doctor Strange.”

See? Mystical.

The energy at the concert, on stage and off, seemed to grow more frantic as wispy gray stuff rolled away overhead. “How’s the sun looking?” Koenig asked the crowd after “Sunflower,” quickly chiding: “With glasses only.” Answer: like a Hostess CupCake with a big bite taken out.

Not for long. The band played “Capricorn,” and suddenly the sky held the remains of a pancake that the whole table shared at brunch.

The free love jangle of “This Life” reminded everyone that “pain is as natural as the rain” — hopefully neither’s services would be required Monday.

New song “Gen-X Cops” squealed and careened on its steely strings, a fresh sound for the band. On the roof level of the amphitheater, two police officers peered up at the sky through their special glasses.

Bassist Chris Baio shook his tail as the band pummeled “Diane Young.” Horn trills drilled through a frenetic “Cousins,” and suddenly you could see an orange peel through your glasses. The band treated everyone to a rarity: “Jonathan Low” from the soundtrack to “Twilight: Eclipse.” If not then, when? “Shoutout to Robert Pattinson and the whole gang,” Koenig said.

The invocation of Edward Cullen shifted the celestial bodies — a much more exciting thought than the boring truth of a well-scheduled setlist. From the darkened stage, a funky miasma of guitar, cymbals and soprano saxophone plunged the venue into a more feral place. The orange peel above had dieted its way to a fingernail clipping. Suspense built. Perhaps, even, unease. Koening’s elfin demeanor turned to trickster glee.

“Curse the night/ If the sun don't make things right,” he sang on “Flower Moon.” A clattering klatch of shakers and discordant guitar broke into a jazzy reverie.

And then, it all stopped. Totality knocked. Let the experience be “beautiful, restorative, mystical,” Koenig urged. The band left the stage.

Soon, the office lights from nearby buildings shone brighter than anything else. Everybody made two pivots — first away from the stage, then upward. A few people squeaked. More shushed their neighbors. For a few surreal moments, the shadows stole all the sound. Still, clouds covered the big show.

People started howling. Vampirism? Out. Lycanthropy? In.

One eager soul shouted: “Moon!”

For a few seconds, the blanket of cotton above spun out into threads. Just long enough. The eclipse — black hole, white glow — took center stage. The crowd went wild.

But the sky was on a dimmer switch. God’s house lights came up. Vampire Weekend returned. Koenig clutched his own eclipse glasses.

“Talk about a buzzer beater,” he cracked, adding, “That’s the main event — nature, reality, the universe.”

The rest of the concert felt like one long cigarette drag with a sheet clutched to your chest. Remarkable, really, because the band brought out some special guests. First, Thomas Mars of Phoenix joined Koenig to perform their fabulous collab, “Tonight.” Koenig sang, “You need a little splendor,” and as the previous ten minutes had proved, so true bestie.

Another Francophone, Dave 1 of Montreal’s Chromeo, took the stage next to perform “Needy Girl” with the band. Guitar ace/Paramore touring musician/Vampire Weekend ally Brian Robert Jones joined the band for “Harmony Hall.”

That led into fan faves “Oxford Comma” and “A-Punk.” It seemed like things might wind down. The moon had long since left the building.

But no. The eclipse seemed to inspire literal lunacy in the band. Since 2019’s “Father of the Bride,” Vampire Weekend has embraced their jam band dreams. They gave Austin an extended honky-tonk medley dubbed “Cocaine Cowboys.”

“It’s a ride,” Koenig warned.

Truly, the frontman became Cowboy Koenig on that stage. (Or he entered his “Joanne” era — choose your diva.) Lyrics from the song “Married in a Gold Rush” took up residency at the Broken Spoke, full of newfound twang and boot-scootin’. Ghosts who flew in express from Graceland possessed Koenig and Baio’s legs. The band switched pardners, and “All the Gold in California” by Larry Gatlin & the Gatlin Brothers Band cut in.

“Here at Vampire Weekend, we’re not just singing about gold — we’re giving it away,” Koenig said. The crew brought out a giant eclipse-themed cornhole board. One of the band’s stage techs tossed golden bean bags at the hole. He sank a shot.

As a reward, venue staff came down the aisles and flung gold-wrapped chocolate bars into the audience. One man a few rows back from the stage promptly unwrapped his catch and broke off its tiles like communion wafers, sharing them with his neighbors. An eclipse miracle.

Before sending everyone home with “Walcott,” Koenig, Austin’s newest high priest of the astral realm, gave a benediction.

“Thank you,” he said, “to the sun and the moon.”

Vampire Weekend’s New Album Goes Underground and All Over

Vampire Weekend recently released its fifth album, “Only God Was Above Us .” From the band that got started nearly two decades ago at Columbia University but now resides in Los Angeles, it’s an LP that ponders hitting 40, the lessons of history, generational legacies, myths and memories of New York City and Vampire Weekend’s own peculiar status as both an indie-rock success story and an arty pop outlier. It’s also the band’s noisiest album — and perhaps its kindliest.

On this week’s Popcast with the guest host Jon Pareles, three critics discuss Vampire Weekend’s latest conundrums, counterpoint, sonic extremes and hidden jam-band core — and its fascination with tunnels.

The horror thriller took in $4 million in sales in its debut in theaters, according to IMDB’s Box Office Mojo. In second place was Guy Ritchie’s “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare,” which saw $3.7 million in sales in its debut. The Post said the director “ chooses fun over facts ” in the fictionalized World War II story.

Coachella Weekend 2 Livestream: An Opinionated Guide on What to Watch

INDIO, CALIFORNIA - APRIL 13: (FOR EDITORIAL USE ONLY) Tyler, the Creator performs at the Coachella Stage during the 2024 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival at Empire Polo Club on April 13, 2024 in Indio, California. (Photo by Arturo Holmes/Getty Images for Coachella)

For more than a dozen years, YouTube’s Coachella livestream has been contemporary music’s greatest showcase: a proving ground for superstars, rising and returning artists — all of whom know they need to bring their A-game — that easily can eat up your entire weekend. “Couchella” stans know that you don’t have to spend thousands of dollars, inhale several pounds of desert dust, run a quarter mile between stages, or even leave your home to witness these world-beating performances.

Popular on Variety

Two notes: Coachella runs very late by festival standards — even Tyler, the Creator (pictured above) said at the beginning of his headlining set, “11:40 p.m.? What the fuck? I wanna go to sleep!” — and it runs on West Coast time, so some sets are better viewed on replay for sanity’s sake.

Also, there have been a few changes to the lineup: Vampire Weekend, who were added late to weekend 1, will not be returning, and neither will 88Rising; Kid Cudi has been added, replacing AP Dhillon; and the new Quasar stage has an entirely different DJ lineup for weekend 2 (sadly minus Jamie XX).

Presented in rough chronological order — all times Pacific — and based on our takes from weekend 1, we recommend the following sets listed below; click on the links on the artists’ names for Variety ‘s full articles on the weekend 1 sets; see the full schedule and YouTube links here .

Young Miko Coachella Stage 4:45 – 5:30 — This fiery young Puerto Rican rapper serves up a diverse set of (mostly) Spanish-language melodic Latin trap.

Chappell Roan Gobi 5:30 – 6:15 — Variety has been on board with the Missouri-bred queen born Kayleigh Rose Amstutz since she dazzled us with a live set in early 2023 , and her set during weekend one had nearly all of her rabid fans in the Gobi tent shouting along with anthems like “Feminomenon,” “Casual” the new “Good Luck Babe!” and especially the defining “Pink Pony Club.”

Sabrina Carpenter Coachella Stage 6:00 – 7:00 — The pop singer has finally reached a crest in her ever-mounting career, which has roots dating back to her Disney days, and it all came together with her first weekend Coachella set. Set against a motel stage design, Carpenter effortlessly breezed through standouts from her breakthrough 2022 album “Emails I Can’t Send” including “Tornado Warnings,” “Fast Times” and, of course, “Nonsense,” where she custom-fitted the ending to honor the occasion: “All about the balls I’m Cinderella / Only use my mouth, that’s acapella / I’m so glad you came for me Coachella.”

Deftones Outdoor Theater 6:45 – 7:35 — This veteran California rock act showed why they’re still as potent as ever nearly 30 years after the release of their debut album: Powerful, melodic rock with solid choruses, big riffs and chest-thumping drums.

Brittany Howard Gobi 6:45 – 7:30 — The former Alabama Shakes frontwoman still does not play any songs from that group’s small catalog, but the tracks from her vibrantly experimental solo albums take on a whole new life in concert — especially “Stay High” and the new one’s title track, “What Now” — thanks to her ace band and her soaring voice.

Peggy Gou Sahara 9:15 – 10: 15 — One of many top DJs at this year’s festival, South Korea-born Gou served up a set of smooth and gloriously driving dance music.

Peso Pluma Coachella Stage 9:05 – 10:10 — The appeal of this fast-rising Mexican-born superstar may not be immediately apparent when listening to his latest album “Genesis” — which is primarily filled with his updated take on traditional corridos — but live, it all makes sense. He’s an electrifying performer, alternating between hip-hop and musica Mexicana, with a commanding voice and presence and a warm rapport with his band and dancers, and the set’s production values are top notch.

Raye Mojave 4:10 – 4:55 — A superstar in her native England, Raye’s concerts can be hit or miss, but she nailed it on weekend one with a rousing set of jazzy alt-R&B culled from her stellar debut full-length, “My 21st Century Blues.”

Grimes Sahara 7:10 – 8:00 — It’s a matter of public record that Grimes’ weekend-one set was an unmitigated disaster , filled with technical difficulties and exasperated exclamations from the Canadian DJ-artist. We’ve seen her before and know she can do much better — and has promised she will for weekend two.

Blur Coachella Stage 7:40 – 8:40 — Coachella’s throwback sets range from triumphant returns (see No Doubt below) to under-rehearsed wish-they-hadn’ts. Unfortunately ‘90s Britpop legends Blur — who played a rousing reunion tour last year that included two ecstatic nights at the 90,000-capacity Wembley Stadium — fell into the latter category, with frontman Damon Albarn yelling at the crowd for their unenthusiastic response to the group’s 30-year-old hit “Boys & Girls.” They’ve got something to prove on weekend two.

Charlotte de Witte Mojave 8:05 – 9:20 — One could attend all three days of Coachella and see nothing but dance music — Belgian DJ de Witte’s set was big on melody and songcraft as well as beats.

Ice Spice Sahara Stage 8:30 – 9:00 — On the precipice of her debut album “Y2K,” Ice Spice brought the bars and booty-shaking to her debut Coachella performance, giving a tour of her small discography during her 30-minute set. All the hits were there — “Princess Diana,” “Munch (Feelin’ U),” “Barbie World” — and for added measure, she debuted a new song that samples Sean Paul’s “Gimme the Light.” The crowd was hanging on her every word, but especially went wild when she showed off her twerk skills.

No Doubt Coachella Stage 9:25 – 10:40 — We will admit that we did not see No Doubt coming — this veteran act’s joyous first concert in nine years was one of the most legendary in the festival’s recent history, tightly rehearsed and filled with energy and fun and a career- and generation-spanning setlist ; their show was reportedly the most well-attended of the festival. After it concluded, three jaded Variety music writers slacked the following comments to each other: “Wow they were fantastic” / “That’s called killing it” / “They could rock the Super Bowl and tour that show for three years.” Insiders say there are no immediate plans for the group to tour after this, so don’t miss it.

Mdou Moctar Gobi 3:30 – 4:10 – Some of the most exciting guitar-based music of this century has come out of West Africa, and Mdou Moctar and his band combine the rhythms and melodies of that region with blazing Hendrix-inspired rock.

Hermanos Gutierrez Sonora 4:50 – 5:40 — It’s hard to imagine that a live performance by this Ecuadorian-Swiss sibling act could be so compelling, but their vividly atmospheric, spaghetti-western-esque instrumentals come to life in a live setting.

Victoria Monét Mojave 6:55 – 7:40 —  Variety cover star and best new artist Grammy winner Victoria Monét stuck to what she does best during her first weekend Coachella performance, giving dancing, vocals and all-around attitude. Her set focused mainly on songs from her “Jaguar” EP and full-length debut “Jaguar II,” and armed with an assortment of backup dancers, she proved once again why she’s a can’t-miss inclusion on the lineup.

Khruangbin Outdoor Theater 7:50 – 8:50 — You probably don’t need us to tell you that this utterly unique Houston trio make some of the most “ vibey ” and instantly identifiable music of any rock-leaning band of recent years — or that Mark Speer is one of the most imaginative guitarists to come down the pike in ages. The group is best in a live setting, and any self-respecting guitarist will be gobsmacked by watching Speer play.

J Balvin Coachella Stage 8:15 – 9:15 — The Colombian superstar’s live sets are always a feast for the eyes, and his set this year could not have been more different from his colorful and kaleidoscopic set from 2019: This one’s elaborately UFO-based theme is initially stark, but gradually gets more and more complex as Balvin soars through his greatest hits, and climaxes with Will Smith appearing before a giant alien head in full “Men in Black” costume , rapping the film’s theme song while Balvin is dragged off by similarly clad agents.

Lil Yachty Mojave 9:20 – 10:10 – One of the most remarkable things about the man born Miles McCollum’s drastic shift in musical direction with his “Let’s Start Here” album is how open to it many of his fans have been: The album’s Pink Floyd-inspired hallucinogenic rock almost could not be further from the Atlanta hip-hop that launched his career, and for his Coachella set, he performed the new material from atop a giant yacht’s prow, and then came down to the main stage for his earlier material — which drove his fans into a frenzy — and then concluded back on board. It’s a refreshing statement of artistic freedom and fan open-mindedness.

Bicep Mojave 10:40 — One challenge about covering dance music is how difficult it is to write about — trust us when we say that this long-running Northern Irish duo knows how to craft an hour of electronic music that’s as compelling as it is danceable.
